The Forest of Dean is one of the surviving Ancient Woodlands of England, having existed continuously for hundreds of years. The forest is composed of both deciduous and evergreen trees. Most of the trees are oak, beech, and chestnut. Other wand wood trees the observant might see include pine, spruce, fir, alder and larch, but today we are not looking for any of those. Rather we are looking for rowan trees, and in particular the magical wiggentree if you happen to be lucky enough to spot one.
The portkeys deposit the students in a large clearing somewhere in the Woorgreens Lake and Marsh reserve. In one direction, just through the trees, there is water, and back the other way, more forest.
Ira counted off the arrivals, matching them with their permission slips, and then once everyone had arrived he began to speak.
"Here in this box are supplies, maps, sacks, and flare stones. The flare stones are your rescue signals if you get into trouble. Just place it on the palm of your hand, tap it with your wand, and it will shoot up in the air and light up, allowing us to find you. One map per group, choose amongst yourselves who you'll be working with, older students please spread yourselves amongst the younger ones. You'll see on the map a highlighted area, this is the area where you can use your wand, we have a ministry permit for underage magic in this area only." Got that? Good.
"Your task is to collect one of the three cores we discussed, or a sample of rowan wandwood. Use your knowledge of creatures, herbology, runes, defense against the dark arts, potions, and whatever other school subjects you find applicable in order to obtain these materials. Each person should aim to collect one item, but if a group manages to collect one of each item, regardless of how many of you are in that group, they will win a prize. If there are any questions feel free to ask them, but otherwise go. You have 2 hours."

This is the second part of the Wandlore class, the first can be found here. Tasks:

- Have your character apply what they learned in the seminar, and what they know from other classes in their attempts to get a core or wood sample
- react to any.... surprises that might appear
- any group which manages to get all four items (dittany stalk, kelpie bulrushes, augury feather, rowan wood) will win a prize.
- if your character doesn't manage to get anything you can still earn points, so RP however you like as far as your character's abilities go, I trust you know what your charrie is capable of.

Marigold waited patiently as the wandmaker dude counted them all, then stepped away from the crowd of uncounted students. She looked around.
"Umm... anyone want to be partners?" she asked, not sure what else to say. She took her wand out and her notes, and prepared to... get the wand materials?
She probably should get an older student in her group. Maybe they could help her to know where to start.

Adi wasn't sure he liked traveling with Portkeys. He looked over at Cutty. "That was horrible.'' At least for him it was. He didn't like all that suffocating feeling he had been having. Anyway. Moving on... He paid rapt attention to what Mr Banner was saying. And by the sound of it all, this activity was going to be fun! He could not wait to get started!
Just one thing needed. An older student to partner up with at least. "Erm, anyone wanna be my partner?'' he asked looking at the older students. He won't mind a few of the younger students in the group either.

She glanced at Wade to make sure Kitty was doing alright as well, but she didn't think he had an issue with portkeys. She looked at the wandman as he said he had materials for them. Flares.. flares did he really think there would be danger.. Fabulous of course there would be, why not.
Minerva turned back to the other two, "Are we just working together as well?" It was alright if they wanted others, but she assumed since they had to find partners at school there was a reason. She went over and grabbed the supplies from the Wand guy that for some reason she couldn't remember his name and went back to Kitty and Alexa. "Alright so we need to find the pieces for a wand, what do you want to look for first? The dittany stalk, the kelpie bulrushes, the augury feather, or the rowan wood?" Was she really going to have to talk to a tree? Where was plant boy when she needed him.

Tora was thrown off the Portkey and lay winded on the ground for a moment before jumping up to look about for a partner. She had only travelled by Portkey once or twice before, and she firmly decided that it was her least favorite magical transport. Shaking off the last effects, she tried looking for Marigold, but she seemed to have already wandered off in search of someone else. And so she found herself off to the side a bit looking for someone to work with. Might as well go get herself a partner!
"Hello! Does anyone need a partner?" she shouted on repeat as she walked through the mass of students. This trip was pretty awesome and she couldn't wait to get started. But first: a partner!

Mo wasn't great at landing on his feet when using a portkey, mostly because lack of practice, but he managed a wobbly landing without completely embarrassing himself. Important fact, because of Alice reasons. He didn't want to give her any more ammunition in the mood she was in.
In the mood they were both in. Poor Caleb. Mo decided the boy was a perfect addition to the group, if only to keep things from getting politely murderous.
"Yeah, we should be a group. I'd really like to try finding a kelpie and an augury, if we have time. Plants offer less of a challenge." Mo tipped a shoulder at Alice, inviting her to come before stalking over to Wand Dude and taking a map, a sack, and one of the stones. "Let's go... toward the water." Mo pointed between the trees.

Chances were she was less likely to fail epically if she was holding on to them and they both said they knew their way around these things so it'd be fine.
When her FEET hit the ground she sighed in relief. YES! Portkey trip was officially a SUCCESS! Did everyone seeee? Why was no one writing to her father sharing the exciting news???

Hold on, was all Wade thought of during the little journey to wherever they were going in this field trip. "Whoa.." Landing eventually, waiting for the wobble to subside he blinked. Then he glanced around before looking over where he was being held at, "You alright, Lex?" He asked, making sure nothing bad had happened to her again this time. Then checking on his mouse, "How about you Min?" They both seemed alright, but it never hurt asking. Guess now they could get some supplies.
Afterward he blinked some more at what they were needing to do. Right.. searching. Furrowing his brows, Wade took another gander around their surroundings. It was definitely a forest. One of his favorite kind of areas to be in luckily. As for where they could start searching, he smiled at Lex with his brow raised, that seemed to be one of the most dangerous to acquire based of what he wrote in his notebook earlier."Sure, makes sense to get the tough one out of the way." Luckily they had Min, who was better with Transfiguration than Wade. "Once we find one.. Min and I can keep hold of the Kelpie while you can cut off some of its mane." That sounded good, right? He didn't mind if they had better ideas.

The first year somehow managed to subdue Alice slightly. She felt a bit bad about exposing what a horrible person Mo was being as of late to such a young kid, so the sixth year toned it down a bit. A really, reaaally tiny bit.
Still sulking though.
"I want to find everything," she announced, tailing after Cactus and the first year as they headed for the water. "It won't be that hard. And a challenge. Rowan wood and dittany stalk can't be that much more difficult to harvest than the others." It was dividable too, right? "We can each harvest an item by ourselves, then maybe do the last together. Or we could do all of them as a group."
Unless the boys were going to be killjoys and limit her to less than four items.
Alice gave them hopeful looks.

Botros appeared on the field in a way you wouldn't guess an old man with a walking cane would - gracefully. He fixed the little hair on his head before releasing his Crup between the students. This seminar was very exciting, and intriguing. He wanted in on the activity as well. Was this possible? He glanced at the kids, a small smile gracing his face, and slowly walked towards the forest, trying to see who still needed partners.

She wobbled when she hit the ground, barely sticking the landing without falling over. Ella wasn't the most graceful person, okay? The important thing to remember was that she didn't fall. It was also important to remember what the instructor dude was saying. Maps, sacks, and flare stones. She'd need to grab those and so she did. She was also wondering where Anya-face had gone. Was she cuddling the headless teddy portkey or?
Map in hand, the blonde cleared her throat a little and eyed the younger kids. Anya wouldn't mind a couple more group members, yeah? "Anyone need a partner? I've got a map all ready." And she was older. Just not that old.
Oh hey, and there was a Botros! "Hello, Professor!" Waveeeee! "Cool seminar, huh?"

It was not the first time she had traveled via a portkey, of course. So the sensation wasn't unfamiliar. She still could have landed more gracefully. Though it wasn't bad since she was on one knee and immediately pushed herself up slowly and paused for a couple of moments for her head to calm down and stop swimming. Luckily her stomach didn't flip and wasn't badly affected. Good thing she had a light breakfast.
By the time she recovered she turned her attention back on Banner and listened to what he had to say. Once he finished she allowed herself to look around and observe the area surrounding them. So this was the forest of dean, huh. Trees, bushes, plants and probably more stuffs if she looked closely. Which they will do later on. For now the fifth-year looked over at Kat. " Cool, huh?" She said motioning around. Cassia anticipated fun while collecting stuffs.
"I guess we should go grab a map and the other objects from the box." Flare stones too. As much as Cassia didn't want to have to use it she still liked to use it just for the sake of it. Maybe they'd be allowed to set all of the stones off at the end of the trip? The snake glanced at the man weighing the thought. Ehh. If he wasn't in a bad mood by then probably. Seeing that other had already grabbed their stuffs, she took a couple of steps towards the box and looked back checking that Kat was with her.

Tora had been wandering around, watching as people joined groups or met up with partners when she nearly tripped over a cute little crup. "Hello!" she told it before nudging it gently out of the crowd of students with her foot. It would be sad if it got trampled by the massive amounts of feet stomping about. Wait... wasn't this Botros' pet? Tora looked about for the crup's owner spotted the Professor and his cane.
A professor was here too? She didn't know that professors could come, she just have missed him earlier in the classroom part in the crowd of students. Was he also in need of a partner then? He would be good to have on her side as the ancient runes professor... She jogged over to him, noting that other students merrily waved or gave a hello and that no one came to him as a prospective partner. Maybe he was just here to observe then, but it didn't hurt to ask! "Hi Professor! Are you looking for a partner or just watching?" she asked, looking up at him.

From what she could hear of the man speaking all the cores were fair game.

He didn't mind if they had better ideas.
Minerva couldn't help but smile, "See I knew you could do it." She was excited for Lex now knowing she could potrkey without any issues. She looked at Wade, "Oh yeah I'm good." Portkeys became second nature to her after her trips with Ethan to and from her grandparents once a year. It beat taking the muggle planes to say the least .
Blue eyes snapped up at Lex and she had to force herself not to roll her eyes a bit. Of course Alexa would pick the most dangerous thing first, but it really did beat talking to a tree so she shrugged. "Alright kelpie it is than. Now if memory serves me correctly without checking my notes it's a shape shifter, but usually a horse. We will really have to work together on this."
She pulled out the map part of the supplies and looked at it. "If nothing else everyone remember the compass lesson?" That could help too right? She glanced around and then back at the other two. "Looks like we should go this way." She pointed hoping she was right and glanced back at Wade, "Looks like we are going to get some practice in." She smirked and started walking, "Let's do this" Just then she saw Professor Botros, now what was he doing here. The man was clearly stronger and more adventurous than she ever would have thought. "Hello Professor, come to join the fun?" Or was he just making sure they talked to the trees.

The seventeen year old looked through the supplies as she waited for Adi to decide if he wanted to head that way or not. They had everything they'd need, it seemed, plus their wands. She was anxious to get started.

"Be on the lookout for the rowan, yeah? It won't have any leaves, that's in my notes, and I think I read somewhere that they grow because birds drop seeds into the soil." And the birds would be on other trees presumably, yeah? "So perhaps one is mixed in with all the other, taller trees." Good clues for them to start with, she thought.
Oh and..."We should also probably be careful of bowtruckles." She didn't want to be caught off guard by those crazy little things.

So many trees! They'd need to keep a pretty sharp look out for Rowan trees. And then if necessary, they needed to talk and connect with it. Weird, wasn't it? Talking to a tree. Too bad they couldn't talk back. Heh.
While walking, Adi was listening to Ella. He nodded and then asked a question. "Er. Have we got woodlice or fairy eggs?'' You know, because there was a chance they would encounter Bowtruckles.

They had been walking for what seemed like ages to Adi. And he was getting bored, having not come across any rowan trees. He wanted to go find a Kelpie. When could they? But then-
"Ella! Is that a Rowan tree?'' asked the boy pointing in the direction to the left of him. Suddenly he was all excited again. The tree certainly did not have any leaves. He waited impatiently for the girl to confirm or deny.
Oh hey, and there was a Botros! "Hello, Professor!" Waveeeee! "Cool seminar, huh?"
Botros smiled widely at the Hufflepuff and waved his hand, "Hello. I like it very much, yes." It wasn't the main reason why he was here, he was their chaperon but loving the seminar and wanting to get involved was a bonus.

He gave the next Hufflepuff a wrinkly grin. "I wouldn't miss it." Trees, communicating and locating the best tree for wands, magical wands. It was practically like Gandrs, different energy and purpose, same technique.

Oh! One of his eagles, he remembered the girl from the previous Ancient Runes lesson, she was one of the hardworking ones. Botros nodded as his Crup bounced around the Ravenclaw excitedly, "Yes, let's-" Oh another girl joined them. The more the merrier. He petted the Hufflepuff's shoulder and ushered them towards the forest. "Let's start looking for suitable trees. I know the surroundings. Did you get some supplies from the boxes the young man set up for us?" He didn't bring any. Because he didn't need any.

Marigold happily joined Botros and Tora. Botros was AWESOME... even when she didn't understand his classes. Whoops. Anyway, she nodded to Botros's question.
"I got the supplies! she said, holding them out. "Which one should we look for first?"

Caleb nodded. "Yes, I definitely want to try and find everything too," he said, smiling at the Gryffindor captain. Go big or go home right? Caleb had no idea really where to start, though, and all this wand business was confusing. So he was sticking by the older kids. Yup.
"Water sounds good to me!" he said when Mo suggested heading there first. It would at least give them a good place to start.

Marigold! She came back to be her partner after all! "Hi Marigold," Tora grinned at the other girl. "Other than Pheonix Feather, what kind of wand do you have?" she asked, curious, before turning to Professor Botros to include him in the question.
Supplies, right. "Wait here!" Tora called over her shoulder as she dashed back to where the visiting seminar Ollivanders' guy had all the stuff they would need. Let's see.... one map, one sack, various supplies. Oh! And one flare stone! She grabbed everything then ran back to where the group was waiting. "So where to now?" she asked, pulling out the map so everyone could see. She noted the section where they could use magic (and more importantly where they couldn't but they had a Professor for that) and continued to study it, trying to soak up as much information as possible. "Can we try to go for all four items?" she asked, still looking at the map to see if she could find a lake where a kelpie might be. She was eager to get started so they could get this show on the road!
