When not in use for classes, several of the greenhouses that are located on the school grounds are open for private and independent research and study. In fact, this is highly encouraged.
Within the unlocked doors of the greenhouses you will find rows and rows of plants. The greenhouses contain a wide variety of plants - both magical and mundane. Want to practice your pruning skills? Why not practice on the Abyssinian Shrivelfig of a Flutterby Bush? Or perhaps you want to harvest some Puffapod seeds- just don’t drop them! -- unless you want to of course.
Unfortunately the stores cupboard is quite bare. Under normal circumstances a variety of resources would have been at your fingertips, but it seems as though the items have been sold and pawned off. There are no seeds, or dung or meat scraps here, and there is only a single pair of large dragon hide gloves on a dusty shelf. If you borrow it, remember to return it.
Remember Professor Bentley likes to take regular strolls through the greenhouse to check on things. So make sure you wear your protective gear and behave yourselves accordingly.

NOTE: This is not an exhaustive list, it's just to give you an idea of what can be found in each greenhouse. Greenhouse 8 is restricted, locked and enchanted and may only be accessed with Professor Bentley. Any attempt to post that your charrie has broken in, will result in your posts being deleted.
Tora stamped, frustrated from the turnstiles, into Greenhouse 4. She had only wanted to simply do her Astronomy homework and here she was handing over 8 sickles. But then again, this was her favorite class. It was worth it.
One of her ideas was to use the sunlight to help finicky plants grow better when they were lacking sunlight. "Solis Focalis!" she said boldly, pointing at a wilting plant she vaguely remembered from Herbology that needed vast amounts of sunlight. It started to perk up a bit. Ha. So it did work!
She smiled a bit and continued to point and light up random plants. If only she had a friend to do this with, it might be even more fun.

Adrienne sidled into the Greenhouse as soon as she spotted Tora. Thank Merlin these things had glass walls, otherwise she would have had to check each one to see if it's the one her friend had chosen to do their Astronomy homework in. Astronomy homework, in a greenhouse- it was a bit odd, wasn't it?
"Out of all the choices, you decide to visit the greenhouse with the carnivorous plants? What was wrong with the flowery one?" Adrienne asked teasingly, though there was a note of seriousness in her voice. She wasn't a huge fan of Herbology, though she didn't have any particular problems with it, and some of the more violent plants were actually kind of scary. It was almost the same problem Adrienne had with Care of Magical Creatures, although that was a class she was actually excited to take this year.
She figured she'd better help Tora, so she headed towards a plant that was labelled "Bloodroot." She wasn't sure how she felt about the name, but the pretty little white flowers looked fairly harmless, so she hoped it wouldn't attack and strangle her or something. "Solis focalis," she said, trying to focus the magnifying glass bit of her wand on the plant.

What? Adrienne finally made it! Unlike her to be late, tut tut. "Well of course I went to the carnivorous greenhouse! You know I hate Herbology, but I figured that in this greenhouse I could knock out two of my Astronomy homework in actions. For example..." she trailed off as she concentrated and focused the light in a steady beam. Flies and other insects started toward the light. Slowly she lead the bugs toward the mouth of one of the nearby carnivorous plants. CHOMP. Now there was a plant that had a nice full stomach, and a happy Tora. "So not only can the light help grow the plants, but it can also attract a meal too!" She grinned triumphantly. See? this was why she chose this greenhouse.
Still, she kept an eye out for any of the more dangerous plants. After all, at meat, they were many of the plants' favorite food. Hopefully if they kept them fed with enough bugs the girls wouldn't be attacked. That being said, Tora hoped to get out of there as soon as possible. Just as soon as she finished her Astronomy Homework.

"Oh, two in one, that's clever," Adrienne replied, wary of getting anywhere near close to the plants. Did that one have... teeth? Eugh! She couldn't help but jump a bit when it snapped up the bugs that had been attracted, and she shuddered at the thought of that not-quite-jaw clamping down on her own arm. That would be painful and horrid and awful.
"Solis Focalis," she said tentatively, attracting a few flies to the light, but Adrienne was hesitant to go near any of the plants that looked like they'd actually eat them, so she just released the beam of light vaguely near-ish something with teeth poking out between its leafy lips.
Was it mean of Tora to think that Adrienne jumping at the carnivorous plant's teeth a little bit funny? It was just that she was so used to seeing the other Ravenclaw so calm and collected that it was a bit of a shock to see her be afraid of something. Tora giggled a bit and pointed her wand at another dark corner. "Solis Focalis" she said bringing out more of the creepy crawlies and directing them into the maw of another plant. "You'll never feed the plants that way," she said over her shoulder to Adrienne. "You have to get at least a little bit close to them!"
Suddenly she felt a leafy tentacle on the back of her neck. Her head whipped around and she stood eye to toothy grin with one of the plants she had yet to feed. "Uhhh... Adrienne" she whispered, afraid that if she moved the plant would strike.

"You know what?" Adrienne said, a bit snappy now, partially from fear and partially just from annoyance. "I don't actually want to feed these stupid plants. This was all your dumb idea." Okay, so maybe it was kind of a good idea, in comparison to some of her own that she'd written down for homework, but it was certainly scarier than any of hers, and plantier, and greener, and probably slimier, too, given the ooze coming from that weird-looking flower over there.
Oh... oh dear. Was that a piece of plant? On Tora's neck? Adrienne was not responsible for this, and should totally be able to just leave, quickly. And she was tempted to, under the guise of getting a teacher or something. And then Tora would probably be eaten. Yikes. In a moment of unexpected bravery, she reached out for her friend's hands and jerked her slightly to the right, then pulled her to the left and towards Adrienne and out of range of the plant.

"Eeeeeeee" Tora yelped as she was pulled to safety by Adrienne. She didn't let go of Adrienne's hand and instead ran with her out the greenhouse door, slamming it behind her. Breathing hard she looked gratefully over at her friend. "Thank you." was all she said.
But she still had to finish her astronomy homework, and she was definitely not going back into the carnivorous greenhouse number 4. "How about the flower plant greenhouse?" she asked rhetorically, shakily walking toward Greenhouse 3.
Once inside, she found the most peaceful plants she could find and "Solis Focalis" she gave them some light. Grow little plants, not ever become monsters like your neighbors in that other greenhouse.

Adrienne tripped over her own feet a bit as she was dragged out of the greenhouse, and a thrill of panic ran through her before she managed to get herself totally upright and standing properly. She took a deep breath and nodded in response to Tora's thanks. Merlin, she was never going in there again. Except maybe for actual Herbology class. But hopefully not.
"Sounds good to me," she said, opting not to point out that that's what she had jokingly suggested before instead of the carnivorous plants one. Adrienne trailed after Tora into the greenhouse and headed straight for a flutterby bush, which was waving slightly even though there was no breeze, its butterflylike flowers almost... well, almost fluttering. "Solis Focalis," she said, shedding some light on the petals and leaves.
Having calmed down quite a bit now, Tora turned to more sunlight deprived plants and gave them light. "Solis Focalis." she said over and over until she felt the plants didn't need any more.
Having no interest in staying any longer than she needed to in any of the greenhouses she turned to Adrienne. "I'm ready to head out... let's go" she said before hurrying out the door and far, far, far away from that place.
Tobias' favourite greenhouse, by an absolute landslide, was Greenhouse Three.
It was just so pretty in here, what with all the flowery plants, particularly things like the puffapods, you know? It was a really shallow reason to like the greenhouse, but it wasn't like he could stop it from being his favourite, right? Right.
Greenhouse Eight sounded amazing, and Tobias was definitely going to ask to have a look inside there with Professor Bentley, maybe next year once he'd given himself a lot more practice in the greenhouses.
Today, though, it was to Greenhouse Three to care for the beautiful plants and give them all the love and nurturing they would need. Tobias decided that he was going to focus on the Flutterby bushes, but still like... totally spread the love all around.
Once his outer cloak and school bag were hung up and safely out of the way, Tobias wrenched his dragon-hide gloves out from where he'd packed them tightly into his school bag between all his books. He made sure his wand was free of his wrist holster before pulling the gloves on, picking up his wand again and strolling down the greenhouse. Just, you know, checking on the plants.
Once he'd done one sort of circuit of the greenhouses, Tobias returned to the start of one row and aimed his wand at the wiggenbushes before him.
"Aguamentispritz," he cast, before making his way down the row again, inching slower this time as he continued to aim his wand at the shrubs, making sure they all got water, particularly down at the roots, but being careful not to drench them. If he drenched them, they might get sick and DIE, and knowingly doing that wasn't a very going way of caring for the plants with LOVE, right? Right.

Alright! Cutty appeared inside Greenhouse Three looking eager for some Dragon dung handling action. That was sort of the point behind Herbology, right? Handling Dragon poo, the insects, and the chance that you might get to witness one of the more aggressive plants do what it does best.
He started down the little pathway inside the greenhouse stopping to look at the variety of plants. Professor Bentley must have had an inordinately large amount of time on her hands to have kept them all...or not! He suddenly realized that it wasn't the Professor herself, but the paid-in-points labour of the student body. Though, despite this more cynical view, he seemed to not feel exploited, but rather had a fondness for the system.
The pathway eventually led to a shed, which Cutty figured might have some of that dragon dung stored away in it. The last few feet were ran and he flung open the door to find that the Skintstitution had struck again! Nothing. Not even so much as a hand shovel. What an utter disappointment.
Cutty was scowling he he ran across the only other student in the greenhouses. "Eh-yew!" He had forgotten the boys name from classes they had together, but he was sure he'd seen his face before. "Do you know where I could find some dung?" Which was a quite horrible way to ask for help in feeding the plants.
Olly stood just inside one of the greenhouses, looking around at the rows of plants. She took a deep breath. Yes. Those six sickles had been worth it. Well, she hadn't happily paid them but they had been worth it at least. Pulling out her dragon hide gloves she slipped them on, her brown eyes falling on what looked to be a supplies cupboard.
Now, let's see what we have here.
Swiftly moving over to the cupboard, Olly opened it and...found nothing. Well, almost nothing. Hardly anything. She frowned at the empty shelves, her eyes narrowing into an almost-glare. Seriously just how broke was this school? She hadn't expected that she had to bring everything herself. And she couldn't leave and come back to get her private supplies because then she'd have to pay again.

Ugh.
Adelaide made her way into the greenhouses after paying that silly fee again. She had heard about the schools money problems, but it was still silly to have to pay to go somewhere where lessons were. She lifted her bag up on her shoulder, it being a big heavy with all of the supplies she'd had with her. She figured they wouldn't have too much to work with if they were having to pay to get in here. Plus, having her own things would just be nicer.
Addi entered the greenhouse to see someone already there. She recognized the girl from the party, but couldn't place her name. She actually thought she never knew her name in the first place. She gave her a smile and set her bag down, before turning to the plants. So they just had to take care of them yeah? She grabbed her gloves out of the bag and pulled them on.
She eyed the empty cabinet. Well, that killed the fertilizing thing. She dug around in her bag, trying to decide what to do first. "Are you here to work on the Task Force stuff too?" Might as well make small talk with the girl.
Olly was still glaring at the pretty much empty cupboard, crossing her arms over her chest. This stupid stupid school. And no, she was definitely not to blame. Yes she did have all the necessary supplies in her dorm BUT...alright, she had simply forgotten to bring them. Which was very unlike her and made her glare at the cupboard even harder. Still not her fault.
Completely oblivious to the other girl's entrance (or simply ignoring it) Olly continued to stare at the empty shelves as if they would magically (no pun intended) become filled with the necessary supplies. Which of course they didn't. Only another voice brought her back from the little trance like state shed been in and she finally turned to tell the girl exactly what she thought of small talk right now.
Oh.
It was the girl from the party. Her expression softened slightly as she considered the redhead for a moment. "I WAS but..." She trailed off with a pointed look towards the empty cupboard. And because this was relevant she added, "What's your name again?" Because they should probably know each others names yeah?

If there was one thing Tobias was bad at, it was focusing on only one thing for any length of time. He supposed that that meant he was GOOD at being distracted, but really Herbology was something that required one's full attention. He was learning to give it his full focus, but... yeah... he hadn't managed it yet.
So when someone else entered, the Hufflepuff couldn't help but look away from the plants to try and see who it was, thereby losing focus on the magic. He couldn't see anyone, so Tobias looked back to the plants again.
"Aguamentispritz!" he said again, restarting the spell so he could finish the row of bushes. There weren't many left, so Tobias was finished quickly. He started back to the other end again, looking out for any shrubs that might need a bit of pruning. There was one bush right at the end which definitely looked like it could do with some of the love that Professor Bentley had mentioned.
"Hi," Tobias spoke very quietly to the bush, moving down to his knees and ignoring the water from the floor seeping through his school trousers. "I'm just going to trim away some of th-"
A voice. With words. Words directed at him.
Tobias looked up from the wiggenbush he was knelt before and to the face of another young student. He promptly gave the boy a big friendly smile.
"Hello!" he said brightly, as though this was how he was usually greeted (it wasn't). Ah. Dung. "We still don't have any, I think. Kind of have to make do I'm afraid. But you can still do loads without it!"
LOADS and loads. Like talk to the plants.

Loads without dung?! Like what? Eat a big lunch and return within a timely manner? Best to clarify before any rash decisions were made.
"Like what do they eat, then?" He began closing the gap between he and the boy. The bottles of live bugs and worms rattling in his bag as he drew nearer and he darting between the wiggenbush and Tobias.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Adi had found a battered old rake after a bit of searching around the Greenhouses. It seemed the place lacked basic stuff like proper gloves and manure. He had found it strange. Until he remembered the financial crisis tat had happened not so long ago.
Rake in hand, Adi marched over to some tall trees which seemed rather efficient at having their leaves fall. As if it were the tree's fault. He knew it wasn't. As the eleven year old started on his task, he hummed. Working was so much better when humming or singing and right now he was humming a rather old song called Crawling by Linkin Park.
Rake, rake, rake...hum, hum, hum...
Soon, Adi had a rather big pile of leaves neatly collected under one of the trees. But there was still more around so he got started on a second pile. Darn, this was a lot of dried up old leaves.

"Like what do they eat, then?" He began closing the gap between he and the boy. The bottles of live bugs and worms rattling in his bag as he drew nearer and he darting between the wiggenbush and Tobias.
Tobias heard a very faint rattling coming from the boy, but though absolutely nothing of it. He was too busy thinking of a way to explain something to the boy who seemed rather put out at the prospect of not being able to work with dragon poo.
"Well," he said, getting up from the floor so he stood at his full height of 4'6" and tilting his head at the other boy with a smile. "Plants in the wild aren't always fertilised. It just sort of... boosts them I guess. A lot of plants just live on being watered and getting sunlight and getting nutrients that are already in the soil."
Which meeeeeeeant... uh... well, he didn't know.
"You can help me if you like! Even just like... showing them love and care is a KIND of food."
To prove this, Tobias turned ever so slightly back to the Wiggenbush and used his fingertips to stroke a few of the leaves. "See? Or you can read to them or talk to them or trim them, or even just help clean up the greenhouse! It's all super fun, 'cause it's all being helpful."
See?
SEEEEEEE?

Adi was now done with the raking and had even managed to take most of it to the compost bins. He was pleased with his efforts and was now in search of something else to do. He soon decided on watering because he found some funny looking flowering plants that were a little droopy. He thought they were baby honking daffodils. Thank goodness they were too small to make any of those weird honky sounds.
Upon closer examination, he did find they were indeed honking daffodils. He recognised them from his text book. "Why so glum, chums?'' Adi asked. "You guys need a little perking up. Hmmm. I'm guessing water?''
Yep. Definitely water, most likely. He'd go with that.
Olly was still glaring at the pretty much empty cupboard, crossing her arms over her chest. This stupid stupid school. And no, she was definitely not to blame. And because this was relevant she added, "What's your name again?" Because they should probably know each others names yeah?
Oops. Maybe Adelaide shouldn't have talked to her. Then again, the girl's expression did soften a little. So that meant she wasn't intruding right? She sighed as she eyed the cupboard. "I had a feeling this was going to happen." Hence the reason she'd cast an Undetectable Extension Charm on her bag. It was a difficult charm to master, but it had come in handy real quick, which was why Mr. Samson taught it to her in the first place.
"I'm Adelaide. And you are?" Cuz yes. They needed to know each other's names. Especially with what was about to come out of Addi's mouth next. "I have quite a bit of the things here," she said motioning to her bag. "Aside from dung and stuff like that. We can share if you want to get things done."
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Adi held his wand over the roots of the Honking Daffodil seedlings. These were tiny plants so they needed a tiny amount of water. He was having a debate on whether to give them the water manually or to use magic. Didn't want to kill the plants, did he? He could just imagine a ballistic Professor Bentley when she found out wasting no time in putting him in detention. Not a pretty picture. But there was no bucket in the place. At least he could see none.
The eleven year old sighed. He'd risk the wand. Better than doing noting and the seedlings died anyway. He'd just concentrate just enough to control the water flow or he'd pass his wand really quickly over the roots. How about both?
Yeah. Both was good.
So Adi set to work. "Aguamenti!'' Ah! Look at that! Not much water escaped from his wand tip. Good! He moved his wand over the roots, but making sure the seedlings got enough water.

Reaching the greenhouses she smiled now the first thing she would do was water. That way she wouldn't have to see the thirsty plants every time she turned around. Looking around for a plant that needed some water. Seeing some she walked over and took out her wand, "Don't worry you won't be droopy for so long!"
"Aguamenti!'' she said as she moved her wand over the roots of the plants making sure they got just the right amount of water, wouldn't want to overwater these babies! That would just be horrid and she could imagine Professor Bentley's face when she had to tell her.
Shaking her head, she moved on to another droopy plant and started to water it.
Olly glanced at her, a look of surprise laced with annoyance on her face. "Yeah?" She frowned. "I didn't expect it to be THIS bad." Like, hadn't the headmistress said something about how the school was better off now and stuff. Seriously what had been going on here last term then?! "Were you here last year too?" Hogwarts, not the greenhouses. Though both actually.
She smirked slowly, accompanied by a nod. "Adelaide." Yes, it was about time they knew each other's names somehow. "I'm Olly." Hi. After the girl's next words Olly considered the redhead for a moment, considering her options. Which weren't very promising. So... "Yeah. Maybe I could borrow some things." There, she even took a step closer, her eyes resting on the bag curiously.

Hannah was ready to do anything, well almost anything, to get her education back on track. She knew that she was not looking so good lately and she needed to change that. The sixth year made her way down to the greenhouses and decided to give them some extra love and attention. She was sure that Bentley would love for her to do that. Maybe she would even some a good grade for it. That would always be nice. She wouldn't say no to some extra points either.
She figured that she would start off small. She grabbed a watering tin and filled it with water. She looked around for plants that didn't seem all that dangerous. She knew that the greenhouse that she was in wouldn't have any dangerous plants in them, but that still didn't mean that she liked the looks of some of them.
She walked over to the toadstools and started to water them. She wondered if there was such thing as giving them too much water? She was pretty sure that you could kill some plants doing just that so she gave them a fair amount and moved on the the next plant.
