Default Round One, Task Three

After having temporarily turned in your wands to one of the judges for the duration of this task, you and your partner find yourselves in a wide-open meadow with nothing over head but the dark sky. Thankfully, the night is clear, giving way to the countless stars. Unfortunately for you, the moon is new tonight, which means it is not there to illuminate your way as you slowly step further into the meadow and hear the vegetation crunch under your feet.

While stumbling around in the dark you come across a waist high boulder that has had its surface flattened to serve as a table. Upon it are a pair of muggle devices, a golden object, a single bright yellow post it with a black pen, and a red velvet bag filled with muggle coins. Be careful where you move your limbs. You wouldn't want to accidentally knock over your first clue, a number and an arrow pointing straight ahead...

The dark was a spooky thing, but Gaston had learned to never show his fear. He always knew to remind himself that the only thing to be afraid of was fear itself. Yet as he walked Gaston felt it was exceedingly important that he were careful not to fall. He could not imagine how humiliating that could have been.

He entered the clearing as he adjusted to his game face. The table was in in front of him although he could not tell what lay on it just yet. Gaston took a step forward towards the waist height boulder, he felt around carefully until he grabbed what he thought might have been a torch. Luckily for him it was. He put it on so that the darkness would not make them so blind and so they were able to see things properly.

Before him was; another torch, clearly one was meant for him and one for Adele, a sextant, paper and pen and then a bag he had not opened just yet. All muggle items, he took note of that as well as what they were. From it all he could assume they were to search for a specific star at a specific degree in the sky, or search for a specific star's degree. He was educated and either way he knew the methods of Astronomy.

"Hmmm..." He rubbed his imaginary beard in a french manner. There had to be some sort of instruction. This wasn't defense against the dark arts, so there could have not been some ambush about to happen. He turned his head and looked to where the torch shone. The rock with the degrees had only now been noticed. "Zat must be eet zen?" He turned to see if Adele had reached him yet.

follow me; everything is all right.

The arrow on the stone clue almost seems to glow in the moonlight encouraging you to go to a specific location. Standing in one place will not help you finish this task.

Best hurry along, there seem to be some ominous clouds on the horizon...

Adele was not going to lie; being here in the dark was a bit eerie. She followed Gaston carefully behind him as they walked through the meadow. There were so many stars and she would've stopped to admire them on a normal night but this was not a normal night. She was going to destroy the competition. The blonde girl took the remaining torch and clicked it on. She used it to observe the other objects on the table.

"I see no uzzer clue."

Adele then noticed the stone with the arrow and number on it. "Fifty-seven degrees. Do we use the sextant for zis?" Or perhaps they needed to go somewhere first. But where would they go in the empty meadow? Adele then pointed her torch at her partner, shining the light in his face. "What do you zink?" Did they find something regarding the stars? If they needed to, they needed to do it quickly for she was pretty sure that thing in the distance was going to stop them from staring at the sky.

As her torch shone in his face, Gaston blinked a few times but eventually regained his proper eyesight and shone his torch towards her. She was actually beautiful. Really beautiful. Yet he looked back at the stone and wore a thoughtful look.

"I zink I will try ze sextant and you maybe zee eef you can see somezing else? " He may of sounded arogant using the I first, but that was how he naturally thought as well they didn't have much time to waste.

He grabbed the sextant as he put the torch in his pocket and walked towards the centre of the meadow. The sextant was then put to his eye as he looked through it til he could see the horizon placed perfectly. Next he pressed on the clamp and released the index bar up to where he estimated was fifty seven degrees. He looked ahead in the lense. He wasn't sure what star or what anything they were looking for. Maybe this wasn't right or maybe his degrees were wrong. He pulled the object away from his eye and took out his torch again, shining it on the sextant.

He was five degrees off. He was not pleased.

Gaston adjusted it to fifty seven degrees then put his torch back in his pocket so he could look through the sextant again. He centered the horizon and in the other lense beside the horizon he hoped to find some clue.

Their time was only running shorter.

With the angle on your sextant reading 57 degrees you and your partner may believe that there is a clue nearby. However, as you look around you see nothing.

Nothing but itchy ankle high dead grass that is.

The clouds seem to be moving closer and closer, covering the night sky in its path. Wait too long and you will not be able to finish the task. In the distance you can also hear the sound of thunder creeping closer.

Gaston saw nothing. Nothing of importance. He could see clouds beginning to form inside the lense of the sextant and he did not think it was much of a clue. The French student pulled away the sextant from his eye and looked at his partner. Once again he noted how beautiful she was.

"Nozeeng in ze sky. " He said and then shook his head at her. His ears perked at the sound of something not too far by. "Is zat zunder?" They were going to be in real trouble if it was. They needed to get moving and fast. Gaston looked down at the grass and frowned. He for once in his life was at a loss as to what to do.

'Fifty seven degrees and an arrow.' He thought to himself. What clue could it have been? He continued to look at the ground hoping something would flow inside his mind. His foot itched and he scratched it leaning all the way down. "We must continue looking. " He lit his torch bright on the grass as well as the other surroundings searching for something he was unsure of.

"Perhaps ze arrow ees ze direction we need to walk een. Turn ourselves fifty-seven degrees?"

Adele Rousseau did not panic. They were going to figure this out no matter what. She glanced at Gaston who had taken the sextant in the first place. If Adele had it, perhaps they would've figured something out. Arrogant sixth year. She turned her head up to the sky and ran her fingers through her hair. She was not nervous at all; at least not until she saw the clouds creeping closer.

Obviously there was nothing in the sky; Adele could see that too now. "Eef it ees zunder, we must start walking," she replied. "Walk." And she shone her torch at his face again for a moment before moving it. Adele was not going to finish a task with a blind partner. "Keep ze coins and ze uzzer Muggle things."

Now that was not a bad idea. He looked at her and nodded."We must turn fifty degrees from where we started first zough?" It sounded about right or at least it was better than doing absolutely nothing. They needed to get moving the rain was only hovering closer.

Gaston made sure he had all the Muggle and other items with him and then with his torch shining before him he began to walk at her command. A little bossy, but then he might have been too. For the third time he reminded himself he was lucky to at least have someone beautiful. Apparently to a guy that changed everything.

"Let's go. " On a normal occasion he would have flirted her into holding his hand, but this was a serious matter. He pushed away his charming side and continued walking in the fifty seven degree angle from where he had started.

They were on the right track now, hopefully?

You can continue to search this area all you want, but it will not change the fact that you are in the wrong place and there will be no clue found here.

Perhaps you should reEQUATE yourself what this 57 degrees means and just how you are to use it in regards to the sextant.

Meanwhile, the clouds continue to move closer and closer; as does the sound of thunder.

Gaston stopped for a moment. "No, no. " He did not feel right. There was something wrong. He paused in his tracks and thought for a while. He was sure the sextant needed to be used. So sure. "Wait. " The French student turned around to look at Adele.

If he had known this were to be almost as confusing as a riddle Gaston was sure he would have thought twice before coming along to Hogwarts, but nonetheless he was sure he would have done it anyways. "Eet makes no sense for me to not use ze sextant for ze degrees. " It just went together in his mind. "Eveedently we are doing somezing wrong, but I do not zink zat uzing ze two togezer eez zat wrong." An eyebrow was raised as a thoughtful look replaced Gaston's face.

Looking up he noticed the storm only spreading closer towards them and filling up the skies only faster. "We must hurry. Maybe we must look at eet differently. Unless you wish to continue walking? " Hopefully her mind would get where his was coming from.

The clouds are getting closer and closer now, making it even more difficult to see the stars. Oh, is that...yes, yes it is. Rain has begun to fall. Yet another sign that your time is running out.

Unfortunately for you, too much time has past and the storm is now upon you. Rain comes down by the buckets, soaking you to the bone. The allotted time for the task has ended. Time to dry off and get some sleep.
