Muggle Studies Lesson Two (Building a campfire & S'mores Activity)
The Muggle Studies classroom was re-arranged since last lesson. There are individual chairs and desks, which form a semi-circle around the perimeter of the room, connected by Professor Hadley's teacher desk. As for the large open space in the middle, it's void of nearly everything, including carpet. Despite the late Winter month, the window is open.
There's several large grocery paper bags sitting atop Professor Hadley's desk as well.
On the board behind Hadley (and her desk), is three rules in large print:

ooc: take a seat and keep chatter to a minimum. We'll begin shortly as soon as enough people arrived. we've begun, so please pretend as though you've been here the whole time and feel free to join in at anytime =)
Lesson Progression:
Question One: What ways do Muggles use to keep warm during the Winter months?
Question Two: What sort of things - supplies or setup or instructions - do you need to build a campfire?
Blue wandered over to the cluster of Eaglettes and a couple of Beauxbatons people she really didn't associate herself with usually.
Except....that redhead (Lee or something) did have a geniunely good idea. A good idea that made Blue grin in anticipation. Yes, that was definitely doable. If they hurried up.
"I like the way you think actually. The framework might not be that hard." Her hands started fluttering about, trying to shape the castle and probably failing. "We don't need to go into detail. It just needs to be recognizable."

Still carrying rocks and sticks and whatever over here. West grabbed another good armful and set them down next to where the Slytherins were working.
"Is this enough?" He looked at Kat. Y'know, Head Girl person. So she was in charge and whatever since she'd started bossing them around. He was good with that, meant if it went wrong it was on her.

Gah. Why... were they doing this the Muggle way? Sure, it was Muggle Studies but wasn't magic supposed to make their lives easier anyway? Kat looked at the ones who'd went to get stones and firewood and that stuff. Especially n'aaaaw Caleb. The firstie got a pat on the shoulder just to show how Kat appreciated his efforts. And the others, well, they got nods. Because she didn't know if she should pat them on the shoulder too. That kind of seemed weird and yeah okay whatever.
Oh, a Slytherin she didn't really know (Hannah). But she wanted to WIN though, which Kat approved. "We'll win," was all the Head Girl said. They were SLYTHERINS. C'mon. Then Ari was there. With the instructions paper... and then gave it to Ascanius. She looked at HER copy of the instructions. Situate your fire at least... blablablabla. Okay she got that one. So, away from stuff that are flammable. Like... tables? No problem there. The tables were away from them, deffo. "That's enough, yeah," Kat replied to West. They were building a teepee one, but not a fire that would probably burn the whole classroom.
Back to her instructions paper. Blablabla. This didn't really make sense since the first two were all about conditions and stuff like that. "Since we don't have a ring of rocks yet, I guess we should make one." Well, duh. She gave the instructions paper or whatever they were supposed to call it to Ari. Well, she gave HERs to Ascanius so there. Kat started taking a few stones and forming a circle.
Well................... HELP would be appreciated too, you know Snakes? Yeah?

Sarah had done this before, so she had initially thought to give first timers a chance at it. But then she remembered it was a competition that it was about helping each other. Alice nearly earned a glare when she mentioned cheating.Sarah would never cheat and she thought better of captain then being a cheater. In the end Sarah did not give that glare, rather keeping her thoughts to herself.
Then Anya began, Sarah was glad. She really wanted to get a move on with this, and her mates needed direction. Yet at the same time she did not want to be seen as bossy. So when Anya began with directions, Sarah felt relieved. "I'll do whatever is required..." she said. IN fact she could probably do all. She began to gather rocks,

Reason: title
As Kaiden worked, he noticed the others helping out and smirked. Good good. And Flower knew how big they needed the ring, and so did Seeker Sir. Sort of. But everyone seemed in agreement, and he let them build the ring. "Its looking good guys. Both the ring and the piles." yep.
Did Ella just say Kindling? "No wait." he said getting up. Oh and his little Badger Buddy was already working on it. "Wait up little quidditch dude. We need some tinder first." scooping up the bark and stringy bits of the log he was working on, he handed it over, not wanting to mess anything up that the kid was working on. "Put this in the middle first. bark kinda on the bottom, and make the other stuff all fluffy. It will make it catch fire easier." hopefully the other houses didn't know about the tinder. Because they were SO going to win.
As Kace was setting up the kindling wood, he heard a familiar voice. Only he knew who would say that nickname of little quidditch dude. He smiled and turned around and saw Kaiden. Oh right! They did need some tinder first. "Oh right i forgot about that. Thanks!" he said thankful for the advice. He took the bark from Kaiden and placed it on the bottom. His hands were starting to get dirty but it was worth it. He put the rest in the middle and made all the other stuff all fluffy. "You can help too if you would like." he told Kaiden.
Then he saw familiar hands helping him and he took the wood and noticed Marigold was there. "Hey there!" he smiled towards her. "I didn't know you were here. I would have sat next to you earlier!" But now onto the next task, "You can help me put the bark on the bottom and making the pile a little fluffier to help catch fire easier like Kaiden said." he told her.
Yes, Anya, Jake caught that look. He stood up again and went to grab more firewood. With his arms full he returned to the group and set the wood on the floor. He glanced over the instructions again before setting the parchment down and looking at the rocks. "Don't make a ring of rocks if there isn't one already there," he read. He looked up at the group around him.
"So, we should just-" He started to say, but no sound came out. He frowned and cleared his throat, again making no sound. "We should just-" Nope. Nothing. His eyes widened then immediately went to look at Anya. Could you just lose your voice like that? Was it a medical thing? She'd know. Right?

Caleb returned to his group, following West and carrying as many sticks as his small, firstie arms could carry. He dropped them next to the circle of stones that Kat had started, and since no one else seemed to helping, he sat down cross legged and helped her form the circle.
He was baffled as to why the Slytherins weren't TRYING super hard like they usually did - did they not want to WIN? GLORY? FAME? All that fun stuff?

Mischa was completely distracted in the class. He blamed Karina. She was sitting just next to him. He kept staring at her though he was trying his best not to. The staring did help because he saw when she whipped out her wand. He knew what was next. With a smirk he turned his attention away from her.
Mischa was about to respond to the Ravenclaw girl (Tora) who had approached him about the fire and about getting started. He had opened his mouth to ask her what about the other Ravenclaws. The problem was he was unable to utter a syllable. The Silencing charm. That must have been what Karina had used. Why not carry on the act to divert suspicion?
Mischa with his face twisted into a look of panic pointed to his throat. She was a Ravenclaw. She would be able to figure out what was wrong.

Uh, why had Ariana given him her directions? S'not like he needed them or anything since they were working as a team. If this was her way of suggesting he lead the little group assignment he wasn't having any of it. He'd be a burly man and do the manly work. There was no way he was gonna stand around and twiddle his thumbs.
So he gently handed back the paper to Ariana with a this is yours and not mine face and leaned down on his knees to start work on the campfire, yeah? Namely organising the rocks that West had brought over into a ring, like Kat had suggested.

Yes, they were supposed to be starting on this fire thing. We understood the directions from Professor, it seemed that most lions felt like repeating it. Although, Tag wasn't against Alice's plan. It would make things go faster. But then Penelope had a point to the whole muggle side of things so he just shrugged in agreement to her.
Wood and rocks were exactly what they needed. Yes, thank you people. Tag didn't feel like doing too much talking today but he went over to Penelope's side and began sorting out through the wood. Grabbing the real big ones and putting it in the pile that Penelope had already started.
"I say, though, once we put the wood in placement, we should go longest/biggest wood first and then go smaller and smaller?" Maybe an idea. Make things slightly easier. If other people had different ideas than he wouldn't be opposed to them.

"So. Yeah. Rocks first. We need to build a circle to contain the fire. Then a small pile of kindling in the center." You know... to get the party started.
"And I call dibs on starting the pyramid after. Balancing the first few sticks is my favorite part." And nobody was taking that from her. No sir.
She then clapped her hands together and grinned at the gathered lions. "Alright then people. Pick a job. Grab rocks or kindling or larger sticks."
Or make your boyfriend do it. That was her plan. She batted her eyes at Jake. More wood pleaaaaase.

She'd offered to get the rocks but Schuyler had already taken care of that bit and they were already gathering the wood. Anya wanted to do the whole first few sticks thing so Lex decided she'd just help Schuyler with the rocks to start the base forming or WHATEVER it was they were doing.
Alexa started on the opposite side. "How big are we making this? Big enough for all of us while being too small to share with anyone else?" Yes, she liked this idea. Lions only. Nothing personal, it was just a thing.
She tried laying the rocks are evenly in the circle as possible. Had to make it just right for the sticks.

Penelope only half-listened as people kept talking since she was already focused on getting this wood sorted. Tag seemed to have decided to join her, but the others were all talking or setting out the rocks, so this wood needed to get sorted out so it'd be easier to put the kindling down or the ones for the pyramid or whatever else those instructions said.
She moved on to sorting out the smaller-sized wood twigs and stuff since Tag could probably handle the rest of the big ones just fine, and she glanced up then to see what the others were doing and noticed some people not really helping much. Like Alice, who was saying something about starting. Penelope chucked a small piece of wood at her foot. "Yeah, so start, Captain. Stop being lazy." She grinned as she said it, so it should be clear she wasn't mad or super serious or anything. But seriously, Cap'n needed to get off her lazy bum and participate.

Léa didn't even answer to the new girl (Blue). OF COURSE her idea was good. She was a) French, b) clever. So, were they going to actually do it or not? She eyed her supposed team-mates, the supplies and other teams. They seemed to be the worst team. Everyone had some skeleton of their campfire already, but they weren't even past the discussing phase.
Someone had to fix that.
Slipping both of her hands as if she was cold--and she WAS cold, so it wasn't really acting--she grabbed her wand firmly (her pockets were enchanted with undetectable extension charm, of course, so she didn't look like she was holding a wand or directing it). She was going to examine others' rocks once again, but was distracted by the Some-slavic-country's boy's funny action. He... he was silenced? HAH! She didn't know who did it, but she wanted to congratulate the person. Team-mate and cute or not, the boy gave her chills from time to time. They weren't exactly friends either, so it WAS funny.
...speaking of which...
Taking advantage of the commotion (or rather silence), she turned only a fraction to direct her wand better at Gryffindor area and cast a silent "Evanesco!" charm on their rocks and whatever they had got so far to make a campfire. It was an advanced charm, but she wasn't chosen to represent Beauxbatons to fail either.

Anya watched as some people started to get to work. "The circle needs to be smaller than a half meter in diameter." she said answering the question. You know... since nobody else was.
So. Yeah. People should get on that. And it looks like Penne was working on the kindling.
So... Anya took the liberty of taking some of the wood Jake gathered to find prime framework pieces.
And when she turned back to the pile... stuff was gone. She glanced at the sticks in her hand and looked around. "... wasn't there...?" More? Yes?

Minerva had gathered the stones that she could and it seemed with the help of the others they had gotten what they needed. Now was it time to put them in a circle? She started helping with that as the others figured out the wood. They seemed to be on it, so Minerva just continued what she was doing.
Looking around she noticed that every house seemed to have a foreign student but there's. She found that as odd, but really didn't think about it too much. Turning back to the group she looked around at her badgers. They really did make her proud. Working so well together, "What else do I need to do?"

"Can you get them to make a ring with the stones?" Gathering up the wood, he paused. "Um Professor Head Lady? Can we use the paper bag too?" he asked picking it up. Because it would be useful.
Professor Head Lady? Uh say what now, Kaiden? Blinking at the fifth year, she was startled in the least by how he addressed her and then his request. Use the paper bag. Oh, it was empty, wasn't it? Well, one of them. "Yes, but ..." quickly she duplicated the empty bag, so there were four. "Need to be fair. Each house gets a paper bag, if they wish."

Knocking on the door. Opening it. Clearly arriving late. With a bold, French apology to the professor. Yep.
And she wasn't ashamed too. If anything, her head was lifted even higher than ever and she observed the class for a few minutes. She didn't see anyone from her folk, but she saw Mischa by Ravenclaws and figured she should join them too.

Yes. We see you arriving late there, Ms French lady. Frown. But at least she was here, and she probably just got lost considering the Hogwarts Castle was larger than that of Beauxbatons castle. So forgiven, this time. And at least she seemed to be just jumping right in ... with some claws.

She drew her wand and pointed it at the first person she saw, a boy with a bright yellow "HEAD BOY" badge pinned to his robes (Wade). Perfect. Of course "pointing" the wand meant that she was just playing with it in her hands, thinking, not looking at all at her target, and generally looking innocuous. Silencio! she concentrated on performing the spell silently. There. If the HEAD BOY was shut up and not there to lead, the Hufflepuffs should fall behind. Since she had silenced one person, she might as well do the same to a few others. Over the course of five minutes, she had targeted a Ravenclaw (Lily), that ridiculous flirty boy from Beauxbatons (Gaston), and to throw off suspicion a Gryffindor (Jacob) along with Mischa. Sorry Cha, really I am.
She would continue to wreck havoc later if needed, but for now, this would be fun. She continued to fiddle with her wand every now and then to throw off the suspicion and to make it seem like she normally played with her wand when she was concentrating. This was more fun than she had realized!

Hadley wasn't sure what was going on exactly, but she did see some shiftiness going on and she was UNimpressed..... LIKE why did that Durmstrang boy and Jake Keller seem unable to speak? They were moving their lips, but no words. AND ........ what was Anya complaining about? OH, ... part of their rocks ... were definitely gone.
"Whoever is using their wand in Muggle Studies, needs to stop. Now." That was all she was going to say about that. "But in other news, how's everyone's building going? Just a little bit longer, I think? SO besides for warmth, what else do muggles - and sometimes wizards - build campfires for?"
ooc: just a couple more FYIs; I tweeted from Hadley's account but not everyone follows us, so we'll post again here.
1) for Lions, Snakes and Eagles mostly: as long as you have a minimum of say 5-6 people actively working, we'll call it even as far as # of members participating for the activity ...
2) assume Hadley transfigured the room into a campsite appropriate setting, just as she did with the Arithmancy classroom into a maze a few terms back ;D.
3) 24 more hours to 'finish' ..... let me know if you need help / confused / etc.

She looked to Jake who'd stopped talking mid-sentence. How were they meant to know what he was saying if he...blink. "Jake...?"
...
People didn't just stop talking. Lex looked around at others who seemed to have just stopped too. Subconsciously her eyes fell to the roc--
"OI!!!" This wasn't even remotely funny. "I dun CARE who took our rocks, put them back! The walk to the desk was long!! Ruuuuuuuude!" As IN, the rocks, she'd LAID OUT CAREFULLY were GONE. Did NO ONE SEE???? Her hand shot up, it was either that or she was gonna hex everything with a face in this bloody room. -____-
"Professor, can we use magic PLEASE? Obviously SOMEONE in here is because our rocks are gone. It's like sabotage or whatever and I don't think it's fair to start over because some," bloody stupid idiot, "body thought they were above the no magic rule." She wasn't laying another rock. This wan't FAIR.

Well. It was time for Part Two of the Muggle Studies disturbance plan. Obviously there was someone else working magic in the room, which was great for Karina since now she had a person to blame her magickings on. Besides, who would ever think she would target her own school? The only problem with the other person doing magic was that "her" house's campfire stones had disappeared. Was is Mischa coming for revenge? Normally she would think so, but he had changed recently. No, it was probably someone else.
She frowned slightly and made a very upset look at the Professor when she spoke about how people shouldn't use magic in Muggle Studies to show that Karina was very upset about the whole thing. "I'll go get some more rocks... as ours seemed to have disappeared," she said aloud to the Gryffindors as she stood up.
Bending over the rock pile, Karina used it as cover to cast a couple more Silencing charms and finally shot a Deletrius towards the extra wood pile so the entire stock disintegrated. Oops! All these spells were silent, with the wand carefully hidden, and planned out so no one would know it was her. She put a shocked expression on her face and ran back to her team with the stones. Turning to the professor she raised a hand. "I.. uhhh," she did her best to look worried about how her project was coming along. "Can we use protective spells on our own fires to keep magic wielders from hitting them?" she glanced down at the firewood and stones and then up suspiciously around the room to see if she could see the culprit of this magic.
Building a campfire, huh? Mischa could do that in no time. Camping was nothing new to him. But he would be working with the Ravenclaws. Eagles they were also called, correct? They would have known by now that he was staying with them. They really would have to be clueless to miss him.
So. Ravenclaws? Whenever you're all ready.

Tora crossed her arms impatiently as she watched the Durmstrang student in front of her stare down the other foreign girl. Telepathic communication attempts perhaps? Yes, you might be obsessed with trying to work on your non-verbal speech, but you were on the Ravenclaw team now and should work with us.
And then something went apparently very wrong. The first thing Tora did was check to make sure he was still breathing. Her eyes had widened in a momentary second of panic before she realized that the pointing to the throat most likely meant that he had a sore throat instead of that he couldn't breathe. Well, now that that main problem was over... "Do you need to go to the Hospital Wing?" she could show him the way if he was worried about getting lost.
Jake dramatically sat down on his backside. He couldn't speak and now their rocks were gone. He glanced around the room, noticing that the other groups seemed to have their rocks still... but that Durmstrang boy was making a fuss about not being able to speak. So... at least he wasn't the only one, yeah? Hmph. It didn't make him feel any better.
Plus, Hadley was asking a question. Jake glanced at her and just pouted, because he knew an answer and he could TALK to TELL her. *Grump*
YES. Okay. Lexa noticed Jake's dilemma here. His eyes widened and he pointed to his throat. See? No sound. "Thank you," he mouthed, mostly because he was glad SOMEBODY cared that he wasn't talking.
Speaking of which. Why didn't the girlfriend care? ... Jake tugged on Anya's skirt lightly. Girlfriend. Pay attention to me. I can't speak. He tried to convey his thoughts to her with LOOKS. But mostly he just looked like a sad puppy. Help?
Professor Head Lady? Uh say what now, Kaiden? Blinking at the fifth year, she was startled in the least by how he addressed her and then his request. Use the paper bag. Oh, it was empty, wasn't it? Well, one of them. "Yes, but ..." quickly she duplicated the empty bag, so there were four. "Need to be fair. Each house gets a paper bag, if they wish."
"Whoever is using their wand in Muggle Studies, needs to stop. Now." That was all she was going to say about that. "But in other news, how's everyone's building going? Just a little bit longer, I think? SO besides for warmth, what else do muggles - and sometimes wizards - build campfires for?"
Kaiden grinned. "Thanks" The bag would be great. He did add a shrug though. There were enough of all of them. "Sure.... You don't have to tell 'em about it though... just... if they ask." There was no need to give them help if they didn't ask for it right?
Ripping the bag into long thin strips, he added them to the tinder. Hopefully some of that would catch fire.
Standing back he looked. "Its looking good Little Quidditch Dude, and um... Girl. Leave a hole on the side where the windows are." Who was the girl helping him? Kaiden had no idea. And what were people yelling about? Or well not People, but Alexa. Something about stones? She probably just misplaced them. Ohh, and Professor Head Lady was asking another question? He didn't have to raise his hand did he? Since she probably wouldn't see it or anything. He went ahead and answered. "They use them to boil water the make sure that its safe to drink." and important thing to do.
And back to building. "We need to make sure we leave enough room for the fire to breath. so... space between the sticks." He looked up at Mouse asking for more instructions. "Yeah, you, and Flower and Little Annoying Kid and people can start putting the medium size pieces around the teepee if they are done" he said gesturing to the two doing the kindling. "just... the side facing the windows, try to arrange it where we can still get to the tinder".
It was looking really good though. He looked over to see the rest of the fires... The Gryffindors were... having troubles. And Odessa, he should know what he was doing at his because they'd built one before and all that. "When we get the medium sized ones done, we can add the largest one, still leaving that hole. if we save a few pieces we should be able to close it up once the fire is big enough." he said turning his attention back to the Hufflepuffs.

Oh wasn't this ever so easy? All he had to do was pull on a panicked and shocked look throw in a little appropriate body language and he was okay. This girl clearly believed something terrible was wrong with him. Mischa smirked mentally. It was good thinking by Karina to make him one of her targets. He must commend her later.
Disregarding the Muggle Studies Professor's rule of no wand he got his wand and pointed it at himself. "Finite!'' Good thing for non verbal spells. He cleared his throat before addressing the girl. "No thank vou. I am okay.''

Anya glanced around. No. No magic. People that suggested that received GLARES. Campfires were fun. Camping was one of Anya's favorite things. And she did NOT appreciate people not respecting the art of campfire making.

And then her lovely boyfriend captured the Gryffindor's attention. Why did he looked like that? Was he choking? No. He didn't look like he was choking. He just looked all... puppy dog.
Use your words, Jakey.
Or... could he not. "Professssssor. I'm going to fix my boyfriend." she said. It wasn't really a question. But. Yeah. She couldn't have her man hexed unless it was by her. She aimed her wand and casted a "Finite."
Now. Back to the fire. She looked down at their pretty much now nonexistent project. Then down at the sticks in her hand. Might as well do her part, right? She pocketed her wand again before starting to build the frame for the teepee. Everyone else could just... do their job again...

...... oh, had Hadley heard that? Whoops.
Alice gave the professor her best innocent looks, turning back to the other lions just in time to see their rocks gone and Jake flailing around and mouthing things. What? More issues? She peeked at everyone around the room, then at the Durmstragglers working with them.
Hm. They were pretty. The pretty ones were ALWAYS up to something.
.... but would the Durmstragglers really vanish the rocks belonging to their own group? Alice decided no, and that meant they wouldn't silence one of their teammates either. So she went back to not having a care in the world and watching her group do her work for her.
This was eaaasy.

LOL! See, this is why watching the others was far more entertaining. She would've heard her best friend yelling about disappearing stones and wouldn't need to see anything, but seeing it all in action was fun. Kind of.
Amusing happenings were amusing.
Oh, and... Professor? Lottie simply answered a question that some may have not heard between the stones commotion. "Cooking." You know, outside. Just like Kaiden had mentioned water, food was important too.
Back to... Kaiden. Wasn't he a bossy one today, eh? He needed to stop with the nicknames. Who was Little Annoying Kid??? Either way, for the first time since the Hufflepuffs started to build this, Lottie was going to do what Kaiden proposed. So, she took some of Alec's twigs and rearranged a couple, because the others kids were done, right? Right.

Still sorting the wood, Adi listened as Kaiden rattled off more instructions. And to be honest, he was impressed. The boy really knew about campfires. He was even thinking the boy wasn't so bad. That was until he called someone Annoying Kid. Who was he calling that? Adi glanced up at the older dude who was looking at him. Oh. He was the annoying kid. Adi shot him a glare. What was his problem anyway? "At least it's better than being sad or grumpy,'' he muttered to himself as he stood up. Needed to stretch his legs a bit.
He offered Kaiden another glare before getting back to work. Medium pieces around the teepee. That should be no problem. Adi started doing just that, leaving some space between each.
So Miss Abbi was really going to put in her input, she was but she was slightly confused. You see as much as she had seen campfires and LOVED roasting marshmallows in them whilst lazing about in the outdoors, she didn't exactly how to build one..and she didn't really want to know anyways.
It was totally a mans thing to do. Did she look like a man to you? DUUUH obviously not. She was a fairy, as girly as anything. So nooope. She was just going to watch and maybe see if she would understand but for now a lot of head scratching was being done and it only continued when things started going crazy again.
MONSTERS WERE TRYING TO KILL THEM ALL!
Cooooough. She didn't scream this time, she just stared at everyone carefully trying to figure out who had their wands.
