Muggle Studies Lesson Two (Building a campfire & S'mores Activity)
The Muggle Studies classroom was re-arranged since last lesson. There are individual chairs and desks, which form a semi-circle around the perimeter of the room, connected by Professor Hadley's teacher desk. As for the large open space in the middle, it's void of nearly everything, including carpet. Despite the late Winter month, the window is open.
There's several large grocery paper bags sitting atop Professor Hadley's desk as well.
On the board behind Hadley (and her desk), is three rules in large print:

ooc: take a seat and keep chatter to a minimum. We'll begin shortly as soon as enough people arrived. we've begun, so please pretend as though you've been here the whole time and feel free to join in at anytime =)
Lesson Progression:
Question One: What ways do Muggles use to keep warm during the Winter months?
Question Two: What sort of things - supplies or setup or instructions - do you need to build a campfire?
What did they need to build a campfire? Kaiden didn't feel that he needed to you know, say anything else. Everyone seemed to have the wood and stuff covered, and he had already shown his fire starter. So, that was his input.
Taking the paper on campfires, he glanced at it. Huh... that was... interesting. They were actually making campfires? An excited "Yes" accidentally escaped his lips. This was SO much better than phone booths. He wondered if An Alice was here.
Hopping up as soon as he was able to, Kaiden headed to where Keeper Lady was. "That looks a good a place as ever. I'll go get some of the wood then. " since everyone was getting the stones. "Can you get them to make a ring with the stones?" Gathering up the wood, he paused. "Um Professor Head Lady? Can we use the paper bag too?" he asked picking it up. Because it would be useful.

Forget about wood and fire, what was needed first and foremost was a campsite, yeah? AND...Oh, joy! Not. Another House-activity. At least Kaiden was ready for it, who knew? Did he always carry that around? Where was he planning on going?
Interesting questions. Not really, but whatever.

Time to rally the Hufflepuffs.
"Badgers? We can put our stone fire pit right here if you guys want." Nodnod. She'd even go get the stones not that she wouldn't need some help. Y'know, being Noodle-arms Bishop and all. They'd need wood too. Kaiden seemed to have the fire starter covered.
OF COURSE, the Captain would be calling for the ones with yellow sprinkled in their uniforms. Again, joy. But Lottie stood up and walked over to Ella, with a small smile. It looked like Minerva and some kids were getting the stones, so...she could just stay here. Guard the campsite and whatnot. Plus, Kaiden was getting the wood...and giving Ella some instructions.

Campfires! Marigold hopped up out of her seat and hurried over to Ella. She saw other people getting stones and wood, so she just shrugged. What should she do?
"What can I do to help?" she asked Ella. She could do stuff, she had done this once or twice.

Fire. That was definitely Lafay's language. So now they were going to build a teepee campfire. Kat didn't know what to feel. Okay, she was lazy and she didn't wanna move and stuff, but what gives? It was all about house points and Slytherin!teamwork to her. The Head Girl reluctantly stood up and pretty much dragged herself to join the group of Slytherins. Her Slytherins, if you don't mind. Hmm... there were only a few of them? No, that can't be. "Really now? Only five of us?" Where did the others go?
SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGH. They had no choice but to start with just the five of them. Waiting for the others to come along would be a waste of time. They'd better get stuff started because Hadley wanted the best campfire. Was it obvious that they'd make the best one? Yeah? Of course, they were Slytherins. Why not?
"Guess we should start," Kat said and then SQUINTED at the paper with instructions. This was so Muggle... but then of course, this was Muggle Studies. What even? "Someone wanna go get the rocks and firewood?" Cause she didn't, so she looked at the two fifth year boys. They knew what to do. Or maybe someone who wanted to get them. Ari could. She was fierce. Or if nobody wanted, she could totally just Summon them towards them. Hadley wouldn't mind right? No big deal.

YAY! Building campfires. This would be fine. What were the chances that the Professor had marshmallows for them to roast when they were done? Anya looked around. Was Lex here? They'd roasted marshmallows on occasion together before.
She looked around and smiled. This was her favorite kind of fire so... obviously... she didn't have to move. The other lions should come to her, right?

You know what you did with campfires?? You made up with one of your best friends while sitting around them ROASTED MARSHMALLOWS on them!!
She could so see this, no matter what Professor Hadley might have wanted to tell her. This meant cooperating even if they'd be muggling their way through this class. Manually building a campfire. Good merlin! Muggles needed to start learning magic so they could have it in their lessons.
But enough about that! Campfire building. The first Gryffindor she spotted was Anya! Her marshmallow roasting buddy!! Lex gave a last look at Lottie, giving her a look that said they were sharing anything they got at the end of the class before walking over to the older lioness with a grin.
"Ready for campfire building duty! What should I do first? Get the rocks? I can do that." Because she could be helpful and there was a possibility that there was sugar on the line. One did not simply tempt fate when there was SUGAR on the line.
"You can take the wood back here. We'll make this spot ours. No trespassing from anyone not in red." NOD.

She couldn't work when it was this cold. Really. She couldn't.
Whatever. She waited for Lex to fetch the rocks. And.. wait.. she was going to the bag.. Cambridge was gonna get wood stuff too, right?
... teeth chattering now. How long did these take to make?
When the Professor had finished speaking, Lilly sprung from her seat and made her way to where it looked like the Gryffindors were gathering. All of them were younger than her so she hoped they didn't expect her to have any idea what they were meant to be doing. She didn't know how to build a fire, even if she had grown up as a muggle. Her family didn't really do camping trips and outdoorsy fires and stuff and her and her sisters never particularly cared.
"Hi," Lilly said thickly when she got there. It was too cold to speak any more than that anyway. She saw the weird little kid had gone to get the stuff. Hopefully she'd be able to carry it all. Where was all the rest of the Gryffindors. They needed to hurry up because she was absolutely freezing and pretty sure the others felt the same way.

Laura had been just thinking about things and so hadn't been paying much attention. Suddenly she heard about building a campfire or something like that but well she had no idea what she was going to do or how she was going to help. "Just tell me what you want me to do." Laura smiled at her housemates.
Well, Karina could fix this problem. A little wand work and the others wouldn't be able to set their sticks straight, much less light them! She smirked and joined the Gryffindors. "So? Shall we get started then?" she asked the group, bringing over firewood as a contribution. If they wanted to win they had better begin.
She looked about the room to see if any of the other groups had started yet, hmmm none yet. They were to be the first.
Building a campfire, huh? Mischa could do that in no time. Camping was nothing new to him. But he would be working with the Ravenclaws. Eagles they were also called, correct? They would have known by now that he was staying with them. They really would have to be clueless to miss him.
So. Ravenclaws? Whenever you're all ready.
What? No snowmen? That was kind of lame... At least they were going to be doing something active. She really liked all the hands-on stuff in this class that they always seemed to do. Tora just shrugged it off though and went over to where the Ravenclaws had gathered. Or where they would have gathered if there had been any. She noticed the older foreigner that had been staying in her dorm and ran over to him. "I think we're it. Or we seem to be so right now," she said lightly before turning heel to grab some supplies. With a quick levitation spell, she easily lifted the stones and firewood and brought them back to her teammate. "So. What now?"

"Um, I guess I could go gather some stuff," Caleb said. Cause like, no one else was moving. Caleb was NOT going to let the Hufflepuffs beat them! He was sure Hadley would be thrilled with them winning, being her house and everything. UGH. This class was quickly overtaking History of Magic as his least favorite class!
He wandered over to where the supplies were and gathered an armful of firewood. He was kind of tiny, so if they wanted more than his arms could carry, they'd have to come help!

So, it looked like it was going to be him, Ella, Min and Kace helping with the stones. The more the merrier! Plus the easier the task would become. And who was that leaning on his shoulders? Adi glanced up. Ohhh! It was only his superhero, Els. "Hi, Els!'' He gave her an upside down grin.
..........
He nodded and grinned at Kace. His friend could carry more stones than him anyway. Adi gathered as many stones as his little arms could carry before making his way back to the spot Ella had suggested they build their fire. Okay. What's next? He looked at Ella and Min. They were Puffer leaders, after all.

Another house competition...Hannah was ready. She never fully got over the puffs winning in Astronomy. She figured they would have a sort of advantage considering they were the group that had the most dirty blood in their house. Oh we'll, she belonged to the noble house of Slytherin and she knew that they would win by any means necessary.
She looked around and found a rather small group of snakes and joined them. "Hey guys." They were already getting down to business and that was great. Somebody was offering to get the supplies. That was good because Hannah had no intention of getting the heavy stuff while there were guys there. "So what's the game plan because I don't do things the muggle way." she said with apparent disgust on her face. "All I know is that we have to win so tell me what you need me to do." Like trip a puffer into a lion or something. They were going to win.

Minerva smiled as more came over. This would be great. Puffs always worked well together. So they had to get things for their fire. "So Ella, Elodie, Adi, Kace, and myself will get the stones." She looked at their stone group, girls and younger students, hope the stones weren't too heavy, but they could manage. Team work and all. Turning back to the group she scanned to see who else had joined so far, "Kace, Lottie, Marigold, and Laura, why don't you lot go ahead and get the wood. Any other badgers could be right here saving our awesome place and taking the materials as we collect them."
That seemed reasonable, didn't it. "We can start by making the circle with the stones, once that's done, then place the wood in the middle. I've only helped my grandfather do this, so I'm not sure I know exactly how it goes, but as long as we put it together it should work." Yeah.. that sounded right and smart and stuff. She hoped.
Well time to get the stones, Min took off towards the stones.

As usual she was sitting silently absorbing as many information as she could. Her knowledge was pretty poor in this field and that’s exactly why she was here. She was taking notes too! Though it wasn't totally new to her. She'd been to Blue's house and knew a thing or two about those stuffs.
Then it was activity time! The snake liked this one because she'd not have to sit uselessly scribbling in her notebook. She'd get to do something! The fifth-year immediately walked over to the others snakes. AHEM! She was here. Did they not see her? They should see her.
"I'll go get firewood, too." she volunteered because the first-year boy couldn't possibly be able to bring enough. She turned and walked up to where the firewood was, bent down and picked up as much as she could and turned to walk back to the other snakes. She might need to make another journey to get more firewood. She didn't really know how much they needed but hopefully the others knew what to do.

Mmmm, excuse me? No, thank you, she'll guard the campsite. Just exactly how much wood will they be needing if Minerva was sending the rest of them to get it, yeah? A lot. And didn't Kaiden already take off in the search of wood?
Also, Lottie didn't mind the cold one bit, so if this took longer than expected she was totally fine. "Okay, I'll help set it up." Smile. That's not what Min said. That meant she wasn't going to get the wood. Poor dead trees. But she could help set up the campfire, of course.
Why don't they Accio things? So what if a stone or piece of wood hits someone in the head? They'll be fine. Eventually.

Okay. Minnie had said her name in the group for stones. She could work with that. Elodie gave Adi!duck's hair a ruffle and stopped leaning on him. "Hey duck. You cool?" Was he falling into water that wasn't a bath, puddle or shower? He didn't LOOK like he was. So that was a good thing. That was definitely a good thing.
"Okay. Stones. Let's be organised, and totally do the best we can." Yay motivational speeches.
Actually though, she was just wanting to get this over with so she could sing her songs. She wouldn't mention that though, and toddled off beside Minnie to get some stones. "You have any idea how we're setting this up?"
You know. So she had reference.
Where were their other stone peoples? COOOEY, OVER HERE.

The thing about calling people together was that sometimes that made them think you wanted to be in charge and Ella totally didn't. She was okay with calling the shots on the pitch now but that took so much getting used to and she wasn't exactly a fire expert so she was relieved when Kaiden and Min started giving her things to do. They seemed to have a plan in mind and she was all for helping where she could.
She didn't really acknowledge Lottie's smile or her being there in general because she was sort of annoyed that the brunette wasn't doing anything to help. Ells was trying to see the best in her for reasons but she couldn't help but feel let down at times like this. Shrug. They had other people helping so they'd be fine.
After getting the stones with the others, the blonde knelt down and eyed the space carefully. "Well, we can at least get started on the perimeter, yeah? Shall we start making the circle? At least I think a circle would be best shape-wise. What do you guys think?" That's what the fire places had been like when she'd camped before so it didn't seem too far fetched that they'd go with that model.
As for the people getting wood, Ella smiled a little and added, "Make sure not to light it once it's all set up, yeah? We need Hadley to give us the okay." Not that they were anywhere close to that part yet but just a cautionary reminder. Ella worried about everything, remember?
Heading back to their spot, Kaiden dropped his huge armful of stuff on the ground. Lots of wood. This was good. It didn't look like anyone had made it back with stones yet though. COME ON PEOPLE THEY COULDN'T BE THAT HEAVY!! Grr. He wanted to make fire already!
The boy looked at Keeper Lady and Flower, and those gathered. "Circle, Yes, but, does anyone know how big half a meter is?" He wasn't familiar with how big they were. He knew feet, and yards. Someone who knew how big that was should set the rocks up yes? If they would do that, then he could work with the wood. "Anyone want to help sort this?" he asked, sitting down. "We need to have er, three different piles. One for small sticks and twigs for kindling, and I want a stack of medium size wood, and one of the larger ones." If they could do that, then he could work on the tinder. Though..."if you can pull off any bark from the wood, do it, and place it here." he said indicating a place beside him. Picking up a piece of wood that looked kind of stringy, Kaiden began trying to peel bits of it away. He wanted long stringy bits of the stuff. He did not however want that splinter. This would be so much easier with his stuff. Too bad his tinder box was in his dorm.

Léa always arrived at classes on time--always!--but in Hogwarts? Why should she care? She had no worries whatsoever like stupid house cups, and she certainly could still excell in her studies even if she missed the first fifteen minutes. She hated speaking English, so she wasn't eager to attend the classes anyway. In summary, if you asked her, she would list you a million reasons for her being late, but in reality, she wanted to be the rebel for a change in her life that had always been perfect, abiding by rules, arriving on time, looking down on rebels.
Knocking on the door. Opening it. Clearly arriving late. With a bold, French apology to the professor. Yep.
And she wasn't ashamed too. If anything, her head was lifted even higher than ever and she observed the class for a few minutes. She didn't see anyone from her folk, but she saw Mischa by Ravenclaws and figured she should join them too.
"'ello," she greeted the cute boy, but ignored the second year brat and the prefect. "What are we doeen'?"
Puff by day, snake by night | Mj's bestie | Always UP to Something...
Well okay then.. it looked as if Kaiden took it upon himself to get all the wood, so much for team effort there, but that was fine less work for everyone else. When he asked how big a half meter was Minerva looked at the circle, well while they were figuring that out she was getting the stones.
Getting to the stones she bent at her knees and picked it up with care. Not horribly heavy so that was a plus. Going back to the group she set it down. They could pick it up and move to where it was needed while she went and got more, right? Going back to the stones she gathered another and turned coming back to the group.
Laura looked at Minnie and was about to do it when someone already doing it so she just stood there and waited for Minnie to tell her what to do next. She wasn't really good at this camping out stuff and she really wasn't wanting to do a campfire because she had no idea what she was supposed to be doing.
"What do you want me to do?" Laura asked hoping her friend would tell her because at the minute she felt really upset and useless.
Aidan quickly stood on his toes to peer around the room for his fellow house-mates. He saw a group starting to cluster and rushed over to them. "Come on, guys!" Why were they just standing around? "FIRE!!!"
The fourth year grabbed some wood and sank to the floor to start building the ring of rocks.

Caleb only saw one other Slytherin in the class, so he headed over there. "I'm Caleb...where is the rest of our house?" he asked, wrinkling his eyebrows and looking around. Hufflepuffs were basically triple their size right now! BOOOOO.

Ariana looked down at the parchment of INSTRUCTIONS she had in her hand, she read it over and looked at the space they had and was suddenly confused, they were given rocks but it clearly said to not form a rock circle if there wasnt one already, did that o nl apply to if you we're outside and muggles who didnt have magic to be able to control said fire if things got cray? we're they suppose to build the circle of rocks, she supposed yes. " i suppose we should make the perimiter with the rocks first, so that we know what space we're working with." she said reaching into the bag Hadley had given them and held up a rock. " a decent size too, incase the fire gets crazy, the rocks can stop it... or something.." clearly she had never made a campfire before the muggle way, she had been camping yes, and the fires had all been magic started and controlled, never this muggle stuff. She gave a shrug and handed the paper off to her left (Ascanuis) maybe if someone one read it they could make more sense. She clearly hadnt a clue
Building a campfire? That was interesting. He noted the the enthusiasm about this competition between the four houses though he could not relate. It obviously meant something to them and they looked like they were used to it judging by how fast the houses' students gathered and started discussing.
Lazily, he padded toward the huddled lions and stood close to them his thumbs looped around his belts loops. The faces were familiar from the common room but he only knew Alexa's name. "Wee can leveetate wood and rocks." He suggested. Unless they wanted to carry them here.
Minerva smiled as more came over. This would be great. Puffs always worked well together. So they had to get things for their fire. "So Ella, Elodie, Adi, Kace, and myself will get the stones." Well time to get the stones, Min took off towards the stones.
Kace heard the order from Prefect Minnie. Once he was done placing the stones down around the pit they were gonna have their supposed fire, he heard the order from Minnie asking to go get some wood. He stopped what he was doing and it seemed like they had the stones under control. They did need wood and that was an important ingredient for a fire. He gave the thumbs to Minnie and headed to look for wood. He wanted to be manly and look for the wood with the guys.
He went over to the woods and looked for firewood. He heard Kaiden saying that they need twigs and bark and big pieces of wood. He gave him the thumbs up. He was actually good at picking up firewood or knowing which sticks were good for campfires. He searched and he found twigs that were wet and that wouldn't be good for the fire. He collected his twigs and even some big pieces of wood he managed to carry on his own. He came back with as much as he could carry and said, "Well Minnie and Ella i have some wood here." he said motioning towards the big bundle in his hands.
Look at Kaiden being in charge! That was so good to witness, you know? It was different, and unexpected, but this was also Muggle Studies and collecting wood, sooooooo...
...it was nice, really. Honest. Survival skills, yeah? And... a circle? Sure, she didn't mind what shape to get done, they could think outside the box and probably be here forever, so circle was okay. "Yeah, sounds cool." Nods went to Ella in approval. There was very little she wouldn't approve of considering she wasn't doing too much, yeah?
But then Kaiden brought up the half a meter question and Lottie spoke up, "Half a meter is like 19 inches, give or take," was it supposed to be that tall, though? "So, bigger than a wand." Clearly. Hers wasn't 19 inches long. So, bigger/longer/taller than that.
