Professor French awaits y0u at the door. You will have t0 squish in around his rounded b3lly through the doorway, but there should be room. As you enter, he scrutinizes Y0U thoroughly through his silver-rimmed spectacles, almost as if he were counting the hairs on your head or freckles on your nose.

Each desk has a small measuring tape on 1t.

The directions on the board read as follows,

Professor French scratched at his beard. He remembered this child, of course, but he was still utterly confused by her. "How? How is there a Gregory Gryffindor? You don't kn0w of the famed twin brother of Jeremy? Jeremy and Gregory Gryffindor? No?" How sad. "Y0u need to look at your key harder, I think, yes okay."

Numbers hey should avoid? Adi had no clue. None at all. He knew some considered 7 and 8 lucky numbers. But as for one they should avoid...

He listened to answers the others gave before raising his hand. "Perhaps three, Professor,'' he said taking a stab at the dark. Yep, totally in the dark here, folks. Had there been thirteen there, he would have said that instantly.

Ehh, what? Mo turned his parchment around and around, trying very hard to figure out which numbers were... the ones to avoid? He didn't particularly like some of his keys, to be honest, but those were his, so who knew if everyone would feel the same way. Honestly, the only number he should avoid was the one not...

Oh. Mo raised his hand. "Pr0fessor, I would avoid a number not on this list. It doesn't have an interpretation, and therefore..." Therefore what? "You can't interpret it." Lame, Branxton. Ultra super lame.

Anya decided to play along. Mostly because she ran out of room to doodle on her parchment. "Professor?" she asked with a raise of her hand, "Are you suggesting that everyone's lucky number is also my lucky number...?" Because. Yeah. That didn't make sense.

"Or that my number is my lucky number, therefore, all other numbers are not lucky?"

But that didn't make them... unlucky? Did it?

Anyway, Sky looked through the list to see which numbers she'd avoid. Honestly, from her key, they all seemed good. But then again...... pie. That was the first food one that she'd encountered and therefore, the one that had truly started her wanting something to eat. So..... "I'd avoid 3.14159265359 because it makes me think of pie, which makes me feel hungry, which makes it hard to concentrate." Yep.

Kace was quite confused. He didn't really know how to answer this question but some of the students did come up with interesting answers. What numbers they should avoid. Hmm...well maybe they could avoid answers that are not on the list like Mo said because we didn't interpret them. He was gonna have to agree on that one. He raised his hand timidly....

"Professor i agree with Mo on this one. I think we should avoid numbers not on the list because we didn't interpret them to be safe."

Maika leaned her head on a hand. She hadn't done interpretations, and she hadn't written a number on the board. She was staring at the teacher's number the entire time. "Nine," she muttered softly. "I keep looking at what you wrote, Professor. Don't lose it, it's the only one you have. 9. Why nine? Don't lose it... What you wrote, I don't want to deal with that number now. If you go by the rule of threes, which are supposed to be sacred numbers, 9 should be, certainly. I don't know if you meant don't lose your lucky number or anything like that, but... it makes me feel terrified. Like there's something connected to it so important that I want to turn a blind eye, the way most people do to seeing others in pain."

HOW ON EARTH was measuring the distance between HIMSELF and someone else going to help him learn Arithmancy??

Grudgingly, he got a tape measure and started to look around. Who wanted to sit still while he measured his distance from them? From now on, Caleb was just going to write things on his paper. Apparently that, to French, was Arithmancy. LOL YEAH RIGHT.

Whatever. Points. That was his only motivation for not stomping out of here right now.

"Hey... lemme just..." Mo stretched out the measuring tape toward the boy, who sat several seats away. "I have you as four feet away, and that means..." Mo checked the key he had made. Hmm?

This Slytherin was DONE. DONE, DONE, DONE. This professor made absolutely NO SENSE WHATSOEVER. A normal professor would've found her anwser completely logical. But nooooo, to this professor, she was completely and utterly wrong. Sigh.

Sky's solution? Jotting down nonsense. This was one of the last classes of the year anyway. Plus she was graduating. And hopefully this NEWT would only cover the stuff that Hadley had taught. Hopefully.

Eh, s'not like Ascanius cared much anyway. He'd just be quiet and do what he was told so he could leave. No one wanted to be here any longer then they had to be so he would just expedite the process by getting this done as swiftly as possible.

Now he just had to find someone to measure the distance between.

Caleb could see that Mo was TRYING to take this seriously, so he supposed he should follow the older boy's lead and take it seriously as well. Or at least attempt to. "Well I don't think I'm really hiding anything from the world..." he said. He was pretty straight forward. Or WAS he hiding something? Hmmm...he had to do some soul searching.

"Ok, MAYBE I like to keep my secrets. Just a few though. Usually, what you see is what you get," he said to the older boy with a grin. "Now, for you, three feet away means..." he checked his list. "You are questioning your identity, perhaps." After all, he'd written that he should have been named Jake next to that number. Cause it had been on the board and he hadn't been taking this seriously at all. "Do you know who you really ARE Mo?" he asked with a teasing grin.

Sophie EYED her brother. She was soooo NOT saying please to him. He was her brother. He was obligated to help her for free without requiring anything nice in return. He was standing still, though, which was her opening to start measuring.

She stretched the tape across and did the measurement. One word? "Gullible," she said. "...and I got a three." Did he move? She looked at French's predictions.

Okay, so they were to measure distances with the measuring tape and use the key and all that. As Schuyler stood, she picked up the measuring tape. So, who was fairly close to her and wasn't being measured? Aha. Ascanius fit the description. So, she began stretching out her tape measure. Slide, slide, sliiiide. The end of it bumped into the middle of his back. "Hi, Ascanius." They had never really talked, but she knew of most of the other fifth years by this point.

Her eyes lowered to the mark on the tape. "I've got you at... four and a quarter meters away." Round that down to four. She scanned the key on her desk, and according to that...... "Means you're impatient?" Supposedly.

Adi scowled. He was thinking but this man was too crazy to noticed. He proceeded to stare at the man as further instructions were given. Was this seriously how Arithmancy worked? Suspicions crossed his mind. Was the man making stuff up?

Regardless, Adi grabbed his measuring tape, glancing around. Whose distance to measure first? His eyes caught Sophie. Okay then! She'd be first. "Hey, Sophie,'' he said to the other firstie as he raveled the tape towards her seat. "Six feet,'' he muttered and consulted his notes. Pancakes. "Do you like making pancakes?'' he asked. Did she even know how to make the yummy thing?

Ascanius found that standing around ~~and looking good while doing it~~, while admirable was not very helpful to his cause in this class, yeah? He had to actually measure someone's distance from him, but it just wasn't worth all that trouble 'cause this was ridiculous. S'not that he'd ever say.

Then something jammed into his back, his eyebrow cocked and he turned around to see the offender. Oh. Schuyler. Yep. The little mouse. Smirk. He knew her, not personally, but at this point he'd have to be deaf living in the Slytherin dorms not to have heard a load about her.

"Hey, gorgeous," he said easily with a smirk.

Alright so they had to take a tape measure and try to measure themselves from their classmates.

That was an interesting task. He never heard of a professor doing this sort of activity. Then again...this professor was....how would be put it....not like the others. There was something unique about him. He shrugged and got up out of his seat.

He managed to go find the tape measure. He went around the class looking for someone to measure. It seemed everyone had a partner.

Eliza was really missing their old Arithmancy teacher right about now. Sure it had been a hard class, but at least she'd felt like it was a subject she could strive to understand. This just seemed like...some odd loosey goosey form of misguided divination or something, and the Claw just wasn't getting it.

She sighed and picked up her tape measure, figuring that with all the sexist comments from this man aside, this was still a class she had to take and that meant she had to at least try a little, for the sake of her own academic dignity. She measured her own height to the best of her ability...which ended up being a pretty predictable 5'5". And since 55 wasn't a number on the list, she just went with 5. Which....wasn't on the list. So now what? she wondered, feeling a bit irritated.

Since her first try hadn't worked, which by the way should have had some applicable use to make this exercise at all beneficial in her mind, she looked to the young boy near her and called out to him. "Hey," she said with a small head nod. "Mind if I measure the distance between us?" Well that's sort of a funny thing to say isn't it? Could be quite the question if I actually knew him. Or if some hypothetical person asked another person that...Not sure a measuring tape would quite cover all those proverbial grounds, ey? Drawing herself from her internal scenarios, she put on her best "Please bear with me and let's just get through this lesson" smile for the boy she'd asked to measure. She was pretty sure they'd met before....but his name...K...Kay? Chase? Er...
