Ancient Runes Lesson 2 : Transfiguration Runes : Granians
It is the last Ancient Runes class for the term, the noticeboard says to head to the grounds for an outside lesson. It's not hard to find the spot where Botros wants you all to meet, he's standing just outside the castle, with his cane clutched tightly in front of him. A widespread of green grass stretches in this well-kept spot and if you walk further on you can see the lake, the whomping willow, and the forbidden forest. A few boulders scatter here and there but other than that they are out in the open with nothing but the green of spring and the slightly chilly breeze.
You can sit on the grass if you want to, or use the few clean tree logs that the professor provided for the sissies kids who did not prefer to unite with the nature.

They got to ride a flying horse? Alice didn't answer Botros' question for a few minutes. Most of her attention was directed over to the groundskeeper now, examining the winged animals behind him. When she finally had her fill of observing time, though, she went back to thinking of runes.
"The Valkyries are shapeshifting warrior women.. they can turn into birds or something, right professor? I know they're deities primarily associated with Algiz. Maybe it can help." Probably not, but it was worth a shot, right? Connection making and all that.

Because of the young Slytherin girl's speech about Sigurd, Kat was officially confused. Blinking a few times, she tried to squish all of those information in her head. Yeah, it was a lot. But what if they came out in NEWTs?
As for the transfiguration runes stuff, she had no answer. Her brain was still busy trying to suck all the information up.
8AM was definitely not the best time to have a class.

... He... had never been horseriding before. It looked hard, though. And now, as he sat there, Alec was regretting all those times that he hastily flicked to another channel and/or not paid attention to the TV whenever clips on horseriding were being shown.
... Yeah. No. There was a question being asked. Something to do with the appropriate rune for... Sigurd? Or the journey? ... No. This was more about transfiguration which made the whole question a little harder. The seventeen year old bent propped his elbows on his thighs and cupped his chin, his grey-blue eyes staring at the grass in front of him. Rune... rune...
... YES. ... Maybe. "Erm... Professor?" he said, tentatively raising his hand in the air, "What about Jera? Erm... that rune talks about change and motion and hard work being rewarded. ... And... transfiguration spells can be hard! But GREAT if you get then right," ... Pause. He wouldn't tell Bellaire he said that, right? "Also, it's associated with Grani, who, as you mentioned, is Sigurd's horse." Jera couldn't be inverted which meant less confusion and fewer things to remember for the Hufflepuff. Thank you, Jera.
The first to answer, of course, was one of the champions. Botros nodded, "Jera does indeed have 'change' as one of its meaning. However, Jera’s changes are not sudden or drastic, and cannot be forced. Jera talks about small, gradual changes." Pause. "There are a better rune that can assist us in our spell."

She raised her hand and offered a fairly obvious guess, though she wasn't entirely sure she'd be correct. "Professor? What about Raidho, since it helps with journeys and mobility? It could help us make our Grani horses move better." She glanced around at the large boulders in the grass and wondered if those would be their steeds, since they were large and grey like Grani. She had stopped bouncing earlier, but now that she had so much to look forward to, she couldn't help but energize her toes once more.

Botros now needed a rune. What Tag thought was that Sigurd had to be associated with the rune he decided on guessing about. "How about Raidho? Sigurd's journey is associated with it and it mentions journey and change." A key word Tag heard Botros say. "The change meaning of the rune can be connected to shapeshifting. Shapeshifting is change." That's what Tag figured.
An that was his answer.

Kace didn't know the runes off the top of his head, so he scanned in his book quickly for some runes that he might know. He saw the rune, Raidho and thought that one could work. He raised his hand and said, "Professor i think Radho...Rehido....Raidho! could help us with this task." He couldn't pronounce the name of it the first time but he hoped he didn't make a fool of himself. Now to get back on track, "This rune talks about travel ...maybe it may...help the horse travel faster?" he guessed. But at least he tried. Runes wasn't his strongest subject.

But runes?
Marigold scratched her head. Runes was a really hard subject for her. She looked through her notes, but then heard other people mention some runes that would make sense.
"Raidho should work, riiiiight? Like, with journeying and stuff."
She wondered if an older student could tutor her in Runes or something. She needed it.
Yes, yes. He understood where they came from with Raidho. Botros was enjoying their explanations. "Raidho is about journey, change of places and moving forwards. If you'd like for this rune to assist you when you're over the Granian horse, you're more than welcome to use it." He smiled at them. "But it is not the rune I would use if I wanted to enhance my transfiguration spell."

"Dagaz is also a rune of change and has to do with transformations. It's a more extreme version than Jera, I believe. It also has to do with day and the light which could explain why we're doing this outside." Y'know, another reason since horse riding would have been ridiculous to do indoors.
"Yes! Dagaz is a great choice. era is a rune of gentle change, Dagaz is a rune of bold change. Transformation of one thing into its opposite." Botros turned to the rest of the students to pay attention to him. "We can use the runestone of Dagaz, from your runes set, to aid your transfiguration spells. It gives significant strength to your spells, so be careful if you use Dagaz." There were several runes to use, of course. Dagaz was number one.

They had the tendency to blurt out the obvious. 'Look! A dragon flying toward us!' 'Hey, you just tripped me!' 'Professor, that Gryffindor girl is sneaking out of your class'. 11 year olds. They were not to be trusted with stealth missions. NOPE. Consequently, she would stand here, staring at the Professor and hoping the use of the rune set didn't actually happen.
Lex listened as carefully as she could to the story and nearly squealed when she heard they'd be horse riding today.....and something about someone coming. Yeah, sure. bring on Grani! She wanted first ride, in case anyone was wondering.
At his question her hand shot up. "What about Hagalaz, it deals with drastic change if I remember correctly, which is what we're looking for, yeah?" Whatever it was they were drastically changing.
"Hagalaz is about extreme changing, crisis or radical change. I wouldn't use it if I wanted to help any transfiguration spells, it has permanent effects." Botros didn't like the rune to be used for other than weather-related matters.

"What about Uruz, Professor?'' the firstie volunteered, his left hand in the air. "It portrays transformation.'' So that part of the answer was right there, staring at them in the face but he continued. "For some of us, like first years, it would be able to help us do those transfiguration spells better.'' Um......was he correct? He was sort of unser of what he babbled there at the end.
The professor smiled softly at the boy, "Uruz is more about strength, health and endurance. I would recommend Dagaz for first-timers in transfiguration. Dagaz and another rune I'm going to mention later on." But the boy had a good thinking!

He just wasn't gonna say anything. As per usual.
Silent snakes were being silent. Botros was just checking if they were awake. His eyes lingered on the mute boy (Ascanius), wondering about why he was always silent like that. Or asleep. The professor had an idea about getting him to be more productive in class without talking, maybe that would help him with this subject? At least give him motivation? It didn't hurt to try. Right after they were done with this question, though.

It was hard for him to focus on anything but the Granians, but he tried to focus on the question. Erm... hand up. "Perhaps Eihwaz, Professor? It's about transition and change. And... transformation, which is essentially the point of Transfig." Not abusing animals, as Bellaire seemed to believe.
Eihwaz. Hmm. This was definitely a Ravenclawish answer. "Eihwaz is more about reliability, dependability, and trustworthiness. I wouldn't put it among the runes that indicate change - well, not in the way we want." Excitement for Granians was noted, Botros beamed back at the excited Marco.

Oh oh oh! Botros nodded vigorously, "The Valkyries are shape-shifting... creatures. And so was Loki, Odin's half-brother, the well-known prankster. But the rune associated to this trait of them is not Jera." His eyes brightened with glee. "It is Thurisaz. Many sources point to this rune in particular as the reason behind the shape-shifting trait for many mythological characters." Pause. "You were on the right track, Captain, great thinking. Two points." The other students had gone with runes and change in the other direction, Botros asked about transfiguration runes.

Holding a couple of ropes in his strong left hand, Nick led the way with the winged horses following him. His wand was held in his right just in case some of the winged horses decided to go crazy at this moment. Luckily, none of the horses did and they followed him with ease.
Finding the class outside at the place where Botros had mentioned, Nick gave a nod at the Ancient Runes professor. “I got the Granian horses you wanted, sir” he looked around at the students for a second before turning to the old man. “You want me to help out with the rest of the lesson as well?” or could he go cause he still had some things to do on the grounds.
Aaah! At the sound of light hooves, Botros paused until the groundskeeper approached them with the winged-horses. "Thank you, son. We'd be delighted if you join us for the rest of our lesson." He clapped the other man's shoulder warmly, and leaned in to whisper, "Also I could use some help running after the students when they try riding on those." Ahem. So yes. Stay, please.
Botros turned to the students, "In summary, we can use Thurisaz, my personal choice of runes, or Dagaz, as miss Bishop suggested, in order to enhance the transfiguration energy of your spell." He leaned a bit more onto his cane. "The reason we're going to work with Granian horses today is because of the hypothesis that their names come from none other than Grani, Sigurd's horse." Botros moved closer to one of the horses, and waited for a moment. The horse slowly turned his head to the opposite direction, allowing the professor to pat his neck gently. "There are small differences to make on those beautiful horses to look exactly like Sigurd's horse. First off, Grani had no wings." Botros continued patting the horse, slowly moving his hand to his back. "Second, Grani was larger, and with white thick hair at the neck."
"The spell we need to use is "mutare fibula"." He left the horse and repeated slowly, "Mu-ta-reh. Fa-bu-lah." Did they know the spell? He highly doubted it. It was pretty advanced and rarely used. "With the right intention in your mind, and the runestone over your wand, you'll be able to change those Granians a bit so that they're more like Grani and less like the school's winged-horses." Ab met everyone's eyes, and when he saw Marco, he emphasized. "The wings won't be gone, they'll mend with their body temporarily." And then added. "The wand movement is easy once you got the hang of the incantation. It's a wave-like motion across the horse's body, and then across its neck. Do not cast the spell unless I say we're ready to go." The professor made eye contact with everyone around. He was serious.
"Practice the incantation of the spell. Pick which runestone you need to use, Thurisaz or Dagaz, and then pick a partner. You'll be riding with someone on one horse." After they were done with this, they were going to try and ride those Grani horses!

- There will be no homework for this lesson, and this is considered AR's final. So I recommend you do come and play with us!
- Any questions, you can PM me or ask the professor.

Pardon. They were going to be RIDING the horses? Ascanius frankly searched the group of people for Snaps. Only she'd understand the look, yeah?
Returning back to keeping cool and casual and bored, he began to get to work practicing the spell at hand. He'd find a partner in a bit. He just needed to get all of his formal stuff out of the way first, as in the speech and aim of the spell.
Drawing out his wand, he didn't move to swish it or twirl it in anyway, even if his innate drummer instinct wanted him to, yeah? No, instead he started simple with just chanting the words over and over again. "Mutare fibula....mutare fibula....mut-are...fib-u-la...mutare fibula." And on he went. 'Course he said it low enough that no one would hear him 'sides himself.
Then he started to practice the wand motion without any words. A long sweep across and a mimed swish across the neck. Kind of a weird motion, but he did it anyway.
With all of that done, Ascanius decided he would do the Dagaz rune. It sounded like less work, yeah?

Nope. She did not know anything about that legend so she remained silent. And listened, also took notes. Because she did not want to be distracted and not know what they were talking about in a bit when they did not talk about something she was not very familiar with. So keeping self with busy with notes taking.
Luckily it did not last long and they were getting to the practical part. Good!! Riding horses! Now they were talking! Cassia approved of this and nodded in case the old man was waiting for her opinion.
Yes, practicing she could do that. "Mu-ta-reh. Fa-bu-lah." because that did not sound weird at all. Though everyone was going to be saying it so it was ok. She only minded looking weird alone.
"Mu-ta-reh. Fa-bu-lah." this wasn't easy so she scribbled it down and kept repeating it under her breath off the notebook.
She nudged Lex in between and said, "You'll be riding behind me," Just making clear who was going to hold the reins. Because they were partners, yeah?

Oh wow. This actually seemed kind of difficult. Caleb bit his lip and began with the easiest of the tasks - pronunciation. "Mu-ta-reh. Fa-bu-lah. Mu-ta-reh. Fa-bu-lah. Mu-ta-reh. Fa-bu-lah..." he said over and over again. He kept wanting to say FABULOUS instead of the actual incantation. Blahhhh.
Now for the wand movement...as he practiced, he looked around to see if anyone wanted to partner. Anyone? ANYONE?

RIDING?! WHAT?!
Her eyes widened without hesitation & her attention was on the Professor more than before! Riding horses? Oh Merlin, it was about time she rode some horses here at this school! Ever since she transferred here, it was always something that bothered her to no end at how this school didn't have any riding lessons or anything. BUT she figured the winged horses here at school probably were not the best to be riding all the time. But who knows, things could change..likely not..
Anyways..
Nicola listened instinctively as the Professor said 'mutare fibula'. She couldn't help but think it sounded like a dressing of some sort or a dance. But focusing on the lesson again, she listened to the Professor's instructions a bit anxiously, totally wanting to get up on that horse to do some riding! Once the Professor finished his instructions Nicola was immediately miming him, ""Mu-ta-reh. Fa-bu-lah...", then repeating it once more, "Mu-ta-reh. Fa-bu-lah.." Hmm, seemed easy enough, she felt at least. Then lifting her wand, she practiced the required wrist movement. "Mu-ta-reh. Fa-bu-lah.."
After repeating it one more time, the seventh year asked in a a firm, yet slightly echoing voice so she could be heard clearly, "In need of a partner?", she pointed to herself with a smile. Whomever her partner would be, she hoped she wouldn't have to argue over who would be riding in front, NOT that she would argue. She would just prefer to control the reins?

Winged horses. Alec was REALLY glad that they weren't Aethonan. Just saying.
But the idea of being able to ride them didn't sound bad. He just felt slightly... scared? Nervous? Yeah, one of those. Because this was horseriding, you know. The boy shook his head before reaching into his bag and pulling out his journal and writing supplies. A quick note of the spell, wand movement and the effect were taken. It could be useful, right?
There. Practice, though, yeah? That was something that needed to be done next. "Mutare Fibula... Mu... ta... reh... Fa... bu... lah..." he chanted, his eyes on his open journal, "Mu-ta-reh... Fa-bu-lah... Mu-ta-reh... Mutare... Fibula... Mutare Fibula!" ... Good? Yeah? No?
He was going to go with good.
Alec reached into his bag again and took out his rune set. Now... Thurisaz or Dagaz? The boy placed both of those runestones down on the ground before taking out his wand and closing his eyes. He tried to block out all noise and concentrate on just the runestones and picking one. He flipped his wand in the air and opened his eyes in time to see it land near...
... Thurisaz! Awesome!
Packing Dagaz away with the rest of the runestones, the boy kept hold of the Thurisaz rune and got up. Wand movement time. He held the runestone over his wand and tried to wave the two in mid air, pretending that there was a Granian in front of him. This... probably wasn't the best way to practice. Yeah. Maybe not. But it might help, yeah?
... Also. Partners. Yeah. Once he was done waving the runestone-wand around, Alec cleared his throat and called, "Does anyone need a partner?" He wasn't that bad. ... Maybe.

Wade had been pretty quiet throughout the lesson. He had been residing to bouncing a little whilst listening to the questions and answers being thrown around him. It was going to be cool though, riding the horses and everything. Like a Hippogriff, almost. Heh.
Now he just needed to practice saying the incantation. So he did just that, moving his lips to get use to pronouncing it. "Moo-tear-eh.. Fih-Boo-Lah.".. "Mutare..Fih-boo-lah" ... "Mutare Fibulah.".."Mutare Fibula." Not bad.
Now for the rune.. Wade was interested in Dagaz, since it seemed to reference about there being a little light in every darkness.. It was very cool to him, given certain circumstances he had to endure. After choosing the rune Dagaz, Wade just needed a partner now, yes? He looked around with furrowed brows whilst practicing the wand movement before his imaginary tiger-kitty ears perked up..
... and what better partner than his good old hair-ruffling mate? He smiled a little before saying. "Hey Spiffy, you want to team up together?"

Excited Ella was excited! And she'd been right about Dagaz which was awesome. The blonde always felt especially happy when she got something right in this class for reasons. Reasons having to do with Botros being awesome and her not wanting to let him down. Yeah...
The groundskeeper got curious looks and the winged horses got grins because it was almost time to ride, yeah? Yeah! BEAM! She'd never actually ridden a horse before and one might think this would be freaking the blonde out but in actuality, she couldn't wait to get going. This was going to be cool. SO cool.
Anyways, time to practice the incantation. "Mu-ta-reh. Fa-bu-lah." Not so hard to say which was a relief. "Mu-ta-reh. Fa-bu-lah....Mu-ta-reh. Fa-bu-lah." That was right, yeah? "Mutare fibula..mutare fibula...mutare fibula." Nailed it.
With that done, the seventeen year old needed to practice the wand movement. She also needed to get herself a riding partner and she figured she could maybe kill two birds with one stone.
Moving her wand hand as if she was casting the spell, the blonde practiced the correct movement. She also cleared her throat and asked, "Anyone need a partner?"

First off was practicing the incantation as Professor Botros had said. So, that's what Tag would start off with. He listened closely to how Botros' had said it and was now repeating it himself, "Mu-ta-reh Fa-bu-lah. Mu-ta-reh Fa-bu-lah. Mu-ta-reh Fa-bu-lah." Sounded like a fancy was of saying 'fabulous" at least the Fa-bu-lah. "Mu-ta-reh Fa-bu-lah." There got that down.
Now, picking the runestone. Tag didn't really care which one he used. So he just picked up Dagaz. He held the runestone in his hand and slowly waved his wand over it a few times. Practice. That should do it, yeah. Partner now.
Ella was free. "Hey, Ella. Let's be riding buddies together." She wouldn't mind yeah? Also Alec may fanboy that his favorite blondes would be working together.

Leprechaun! Ella tilted her head and regarded the Gryffindor curiously. Did leprechauns know how to ride Granian horses? Well, no matter. They'd figure it out together. "Sure thing." Grin. "Oh and hey, I need to borrow both of your hands for a minute." And without waiting for confirmation that this was okay, the blonde took both of Tag's hands and moved them so they were palm-up.
Digging through her rune stones, the seventeen year old finally came up with Dagaz and Thurisaz. She placed one stone in Tag's left hand and the other in his right and then smiled at him before closing her eyes and holding a hand right above each stone. Hm...which one did she feel like she should use?
After a moment or two, the blonde picked up the stone in Tag's right hand and opened her eyes. "Thurisaz, cool." The other one was put away and then eyes were back on Sir Sassy Pants. "Ever ride a horse before, Tag?"

No, Ella. Leprechauns did not know how to ride Granian horses. Nor did they know how to ride actual horses. But there was a first for everything. If only the horse were a unicorn, then that daydream Tag had over the summer, of a leprechaun riding a unicorn, would have come true. Anyway. And, yes! Ella was willing to work with Tag. GRIN. Why was Ella borrowing Tag's hands? Ok, and now she was holding them. What was she doing? Tag watched the girl carefully placing the runestones in his hands and then picking one of them, Thurisaz as she had said.
And attention back on her. "Nope. I've never ridden a horse before. So this is new for me. Have you?" Because if she did, she could take control. Again. An Ella was smarter and older, so, she was automatically wiser and knew what to do. That's how it works.

They were going to ride Granians? That was awesome! This was totally worth getting up early now. Penelope had always kinda wanted to try riding a flying horse, especially since she'd heard a lot about them from Atticus since he'd worked with them before, and even though they apparently weren't going to fly them, it was still cool. She was much more willing to try this spell stuff if it meant they got to do something fun.
"Mu-ta-reh. Fa-bu-lah," she pronounced slowly, pulling out her wand before setting it down for a moment. She wasn't practicing the movement yet, but just in case saying the incantation might make something with her wand anyway, she wasn't gonna hold it while she practiced the pronunciation. "Mu-ta-reh Fa-bu-lah. Mutareh fabulah. Mutare fibula."
There, that wasn't too bad really.
She still had more practice to do but there wasn't any harm finding a partner before everyone had already partnered up and made it harder to find someone. And look who seemed to be partnerless. Heh. She moved over to sit by Ascanius with a grin. "Wanna partner up?"

Despite what Alec had been thinking, it didn't take long for someone to come up to him and accept his offer to partner up. And who was this mystery partner? "Curly!" he called, a grin spreading across his face, "Yeah, sure! That'd be great!" Team Hair Rufflers and all. Plus this gave them the opportunity to spend some time together before the end of the term.
... Yeah... he wasn't going to be thinking about that.
"So..." he said, holding onto his wand and runestone, "Do you know how to ride a Granian?" Pause. "Or any other horse?" Because Alec had no idea and there was a ray of hope inside of him; one that thought that if he was partnered up with someone who was good at horse riding, this whole thing wouldn't be completely disastrous. But if things went wrong... that would be a completely different way to end the term.
Also. Did it matter if they had the same runestones or...?

Aimlessly practicing the motion over and over again more out of boredom then out of dedication, Ascanius kept his eyes peeled on the horses. Y'know, he didn't know if he exactly thought it was right to meld their wings into their bodies. It was part of what made them beautiful, yeah? And Ascanius knew a WHOLE lot about looking good. If someone took that away, he'd be very put out...and he didn't wanna be on the horse that got annoyed and threw him from it.
Blink. Stare. Smirk.
Oh hey, Pen. The fifth year shrugged playfully and shot back, "Dunno...I'm not sure I like you." Then he nudged her and made room for her in his personal space and all.
....
He had to actually do work if she were here. Huh. Well, this was going to be counterproductive. Ah well.
"So...what exactly are we supposed to do?" Did she know? 'Cause he hadn't payed a lick of attention.

Okay so what had Botros said? You needed to hold the runestone over your wand? Ella fiddled with Thurisaz and her wand, trying to get a comfortable grip going. She figured that was just as important as having the incantation and movement right, y'know? As she practiced, she listened intently to Tag about his riding experience. So he was a newbie too, huh? That was comforting. It meant he wouldn't think Ella was completely lame if she did something silly while they were riding.
"I've never ridden a horse either, actually." But she was bouncing so she was clearly excited. Clearly. "I bet we'll be fast learners, though."Or at least she was hoping that was the case. "It's sort of a shame their wings will be mended to their bodies. They look so cool when they expand them." The wings, that is.

Right right. Lex nodded to everything the Professor was saying, even if she was only half listening. Nodding and smiling was the fastest way to make runes talk go away when one wanted nothing more than to sleep under a nice shady tree somewhere in the courtyard with the smell of chocolate riding on the wind. Surely she wasn't the only one who could appreciate something like this.
To humour the Professor she began chanting the incantation in the same rhythm as Cassia, being careful not to throw the girl off.
" Mu-ta-reh Fa-bu-lah." Quite insync with her best friend until the girl stopped to let her know she'd be...riding behind her.....? When was THAT decided?? "Er, are we taking turns at all or is this a one way street kinda thing. Lemme know so I can pick another partner before they all run out." YES Cassia, she was preparing to have you replaced if sharing wasn't going to be happening. She wanted a turn at the reign and knowing the snake, if SHE had the reigns they'd be going at some imaginary speed limit.....just no.
But more practising. "Mu-ta-reh Fa-bu-lah....Mu-ta-reh Fa-bu-lah...."

Adi listened to the seriousness of the Professor's tone. He would follow the instructions to the dot. Yep, he would! So. Practice time. "Mu-ta-reh. Fa-bu-lah. Mu-ta-reh. Fa-bu-lah. Mu-ta-reh. Fa-bu-lah. Mu-ta-reh. Fa-bu-lah." Good. He though thehad that out of the way.
Oh yes! He needed a partner! Better snag one now! Wasn't that Caleb asking for a partner? Do mind if Adi took up the offer. "Caleb!'' he called, bounding over to the boy. "Partners?''

Wade grinned back at Alec. They were such good buddies, it made sense for them to team up now that Quidditch was already over.. Ahem. Yeah, he'll think about that much later too.
He decided to practice again tracing out the horse with his wand, to get the movement perfect. Had he ridden a horse before? "Oh, well I've ridden a Hippogriff before." Both a live and mechanical, though it was a while since. "That should count, right?" Since they did have some horse elements to them. "How about you?" He fiddled a little with the Dagaz rune too.

Tag watched Ella a bit more and then got out his wand again. He started to practice the movement that Botros had said. A little more practice never hurt anyone. An Ella was doing her practice with the stone.
Was Ella bouncing? Tag just smiled at that. She seemed very very excited to ride the horse. But, that probably had mostly to do with the fact that it would be her first time too. First time things were either scary or exciting. An it looked like Ella was veering towards excitement. "I'm sure we'll get down how to ride a horse in no time." He said with a smile. Then he agreed with her on the part of the wings being minded into the Granians bodies. "Yeah, the wings do look brilliant. Keeping a creature in its natural state is always something I want. As long as they don't get hurt in the process." Which was something that always concerned Tag about animals and creatures.

Now, now. Did not everyone sound ridiculous repeating those words? Yes they did. Cassia was having a trouble not laughing. How could the Professor keep a straight face while that. At least Cassia was chanting along with the others and she could not really see how it went like the man was able to.
Ahem. She needed to focus on the incantation. "Mu-ta-reh Fa-bu-lah!" Oh, and someone was echoing her. Lex! Good bestie who knew to chime in without disturbing. She had many good qualities, this lioness did.
Bluntness, however, was not one of them. Cassia paused and turned to look at the fourth-year. "Nope. You're not finding another partner." Yes, Alexa, you are stuck with the snake."And of course we're taking turns. Psht." Initially that wasn't decided but knowing Lex, Cassia could very well see her threatening to jump off the horse until she was given her right of leading and mounting the horse. Let's not kill the girl. She had a loving nice father.
With that settled, she got back to business. "Mu-ta-reh Fa-bu-lah," it was getting boring you know. "we need to choose a rune, too, right?" Or was that part of her imagination.

"Mu-ta-reh Fa-bu-lah....Mu-ta-reh Fa-bu-lah."
Yup, keeping up with Cassia's chanting. She didn't care whether they were in sync with everyone else in the class or not. She and her best friend had the right idea, obviously. Everyone else was just wrong until they fell into their beat. Lex was getting all kinds of impatient with this waiting around and chanting business though. It was making her restless. Restless and sleepy? Was that even a thing?? No. No it wasn't and she'd admitted she wasn't so tired anymore. Horses were better than sleep right now, OKAY???
And Cassia was agreeing to let them take turns. "Brilliant! You can have first ride, I guess, 'cause you called it but then it'll be my turn." And what a turn it would be. "It'l be epic, just wait. Not sure how well the Professor will be able to keep up though." She continued in a whisper in case the old man had sharp ears.
Now about that rune choosing.....
"Right....so my runes are still on my bed." She began, as casually as possible. No need to be alarmed Cassia. She had the perfect plan. "So I was thinking, you can choose a rune and I'll take the other....'cause, you know, the Professor said there were two we could use and what'd you know, there's TWO of us!" GRIN.

Caleb turned around when he heard his name being called. Oh, it was Adi! That Hufflepuff boy. Why did he know so many Hufflepuffs? Hmm. Well, regardless, he hadn't talked to him in a while and thought he'd be an awesome partner so YAY!
"Awesome! Sounds good - you wanna ride first?" he asked. Mainly, he was a bit scared of doing it himself first. So better to let the Huffie do it first. You know. Just in case.

Ella was bouncing! She was! Because this was an exciting day and it was Runes and all was good. Mhm! Hopefully Tag wasn't going to hate her by the end of this because she wasn't sure the bouncing or smiling was going to stop any time soon. Sorry, Tag.
Good, they were on the same page. The blonde badger was thinking positively and she was glad her leprechaun friend was equally sure that they wouldn't have any problems while riding. Besides, they had each other's backs and stuff, yeah? Yeah. So they'd be fine.
It was nice of Tag to want to make sure creatures were safe and sound. Ella supposed this was one of the things that they had in common, the other one being a certain hair ruffling cutie pie. She smiled a little and nodded her head in agreement. "I don't think Professor Botros would have us do anything that would harm a creature. I'm sure the spell won't hurt the horses at all."
