Hecate sat on the corner of her desk, listening to a tune in her her head no one else could hear. She swayed back and forth lightly, until her clock struck the hour her class would begin. Her face turned serious again, and she went behind her desk, waving her want to unlock the door.
Now that the door to the classroom was unlocked... kids just needed to begin filing in.

Sneaking periodic little looks over at her boyfriend, Alice moved on to adding the coconut oil, stirring the mixture once in a clockwise direction after each set of five drops. She paused momentarily to cross another step off with her quill before reading the following one. Protective gear? Why was that necessary? Either way, she complied with the text's orders, donning gloves, an apron, and a pair of goggles before continuing.
A dollop of Vaseline. The sixth year wasn't quite sure what Vaseline was, but she'd grabbed the container labelled as it. A gloved finger stretched into the petroleum jelly, capturing a dollop that she successfully flicked into her cauldron. Next, Alice let exactly seven drops of Lanolin trickle into her cauldron, turning the wooden spoon thrice in a clockwise motion.
Mixing in the wood grease preceded grinding the yellow moonstone, so she was quick to grab a mortar and pestle. How much did the book say, two tablespoons? She dropped the ingredient into the apothecary grinder, then began crushing it. Once she had finished, Alice peeked at the procedure again, making sure to add the moonstone in a circular motion. The Vitamin E capsule? She dropped that in the center, just how she was meant to do.
And then she stole another glance at West. Hi West. She got to stare at him for six whole minutes now. Book said so.

Use/Effect:
Allows one to make another say whatever he or she wants; cannot make someone else cast a spell.
Ingredients: - 1 gallon of flobberworm mucus - 1 tsp shredded beeswax - 20 drops of Coconut Oil - 1 finger of Vaseline - 7 drops of Lanolin - 2 tbs yellow moonstone - 1 Vitamin E Capsule
- 1 pinch of Chamomile
- 1 Jobberknoll feather
- 1 Jobberknoll tongue
- 10 blades of scurvy grass
- 3 tsp of fluxweed
- 2 leaves of lovage
- 1 cup of stewed mandrake roots
Instructions: - Light cauldron and pour in the Flobberworm Mucus. - Drop beeswax into mucus, watch it melt, then stir twice counter clockwise. - Add the 20 drops of coconut oil five at a time. Stir once clockwise after each five drops. - Don protective gear; gloves, aprons and goggles. - Flick dollop of Vaseline into cauldron with finger. - Add in 7 drops of Lanolin, and stir clockwise three times. - Grind Moonstone in mortar and pestle. Add 2 tsp to cauldron in a circular motion. - Add Vitamin E to the center of the moonstone circle.
- After 6 minutes potion should be bright yellow.
- Add a pinch of Chamomile.
- Using silver blade, slice the Jobberknoll feather and tongue finely, add to cauldron.
- Stir 5 times counter clockwise and once clockwise.
- Take the blades of scurvy grass and the fluxweed and put them in the lovage leaves. Roll them together tightly and press hard as you roll.
- Use Diffindo to cut them into 10 small pieces.
- Take the stewed mandrake roots and carve ten little holes in it with your silver knife, then stuff the leaf rolls into the mandrake root. Put the carved out pieces on top, drop the whole root into the cauldron, and wait 5 minutes.

Once full of water, the cauldron became sort of unwieldy and sloshed a bit over the sides as Mo shifted it across his work station and into place. He dried his gloved hand carefully on his robes, something he wouldn't have done if he wasn't absolutely sure it was just water all over his hands, and then Mo pulled out his wand again.
Now... he needed to let the cauldron heat over a low flame. "Incendio," he pointed his wand at the base of the cauldron and settled on a small flame giving off minimal heat. While the water heated, Mo shifted sideways, giving Cat a hip-bump as he prepared his first ingredient.
Elf-made wine vinegar? Mo sniffed it and pulled a face. "Do you ever cook with this stuff, or is it only suited for potions? And what's the difference between elf-made and human-made? Do you know?" He tipped the phial toward Cat and carefully measured out two cups so she could see before pouring it into the heated water.

Devomotion Potion
Ingredients:
Water
2 cups elf-made wine vinegar
3 leaves from a Dransul plant
3 billywig stingers
Instructions:
Fill cauldron with water
Heat over a low flame
Add elf-made wine vinegar
Crush one Dransul leaf in mortar until acid forms
Add three drops Dransul acid to cauldron with a dropper
Stir potion 3 times counter-clockwise
Add billywig stingers while potion is still moving (Potion should appear a dark burgundy in color)
Point wand at potion, move in a spiraling motion upwards while casting "Agitatum"
Using "Glacius", quickly douse flame and cool cauldron down, potion will continue to move.
Let simmer a month.
Colour will have darkened to black, consistency will be thicker
Ladle the potion in a developing tray
With gloves on, pass the negative in the potion
One minute later, take it out and put it in a second tray, covering it with water
Allow to dry

Benzi frowned. It had been TEN ENTIRE MINUTES since he'd finished stirring his potions. Last time he'd checked, it was still hot which meant he couldn't scoop it up into a vial. GAH.
Eyeing the seemingly cold potion, Benzi gingerly touched the sides of the cauldron. OH OH. It was COLDER. Cold enough. Grabbing the empty vial he'd just washed, the Ravenclaw filled it up with his potion and corked it up. BOOM. Singing Suspension done. Now for that other thing he was going to do.
Flicking his book to the appropriate page, Benzi read through the list of ingredients before setting to work. First off - washing his cauldron. He hauled the full cauldron to the sinks and tipped it over before rinsing it thoroughly, scrubbing it until his hand hurt but it looked ready for use. He made the trip twice more, washing all his utensils deeming everything usable.
Reading over the ingredient list, Benzi went to the cupboard and grabbed what he needed, wrinkling his nose at some of the things. Blood and leeches. Kind of disgusting. Cool, yes, but still disgusting.

break the Valerian sprigs using your hands and add to the poppy seed dust
add the contents of the mortar to cauldron
add leeches to cauldron (wear gloves) → potion will turn a deep dark red
move wand in straight jabbing motion and say 'Verax' (potion will turn clear)
Right. He needed water in the cauldron. "Aguamenti," he said clearly, yet again enjoying watching his cauldron fill up with water. Now his ingredients. He filled up his dropper with the wormwood stuff, measured out one single cup of jobberknoll blood, taking SPECIAL care not to spill any and crushed his poppy seeds. He'd do the rest during the actual potion making, since he didn't know if mixing stuff beforehand would ruin the potion.
Okay. So. Light burner. 1.. 2.. 3.. 4.. 5.. 6.. 7.. 8 drops of wormwood into the potion.

Cat grinned at Mo and gave him another quick glance for the hip bumping. Was he trying to distract her, hmm? Right now, she didn't much mind because here was the part that made Cat a little sad. Firefly bulbs. She decided to not think about the poor dead fireflies, harvested for their bulbs. She also tried not thinking about how this was going in a potion that was meant to be consumed. Gross. Gross things went in potions. Well, at least she had orange juice and sugar. Cat picked up the first of the firefly bulbs and squeezed it over the cauldron, making sure to get all the fluid out before she discarded it for the next.
She glanced at Mo with his question and made sure to get all of the fluid out of the bulb she had over her cauldron before she continued on. "Wine vinegar? I use wine and vinegar, yeah, but I'm not sure about them both together." Surely it could be a thing, right? Maybe after class, she'd write to her grandmother and find out for sure. Cat squeezed the contents of two more bulbs into her cauldron. Four bulbs down, sixteen to go and it was still sad.
"Besides the obvious answer? One is made by humans and one is made by elves?" Cat grinned in a rather cheeky way though she knew that Mo's question was legitimate. She just didn't have the answer. She continued on, carefully squeezing the fluid out of her remaining sixteen firefly bulbs until all twenty of them had been added to her cauldron. Then she blew a kiss for all the fallen fireflies. Poor dears.
What was next? Clabbert pustules? Ewwwwww. Ugh. Gross. Just the word pustules made her cringe. Ick. Regardless, she had nine of them to add into her cauldron, so she did, dropping them in one by one.

Stir ingredients counter clockwise once then add a peppermint leaf, then repeat for each leaf and give one final stir
Squeeze the fluid of 20 firefly bulbs into cauldron
Add Clabbert Pustules whole
Stir potion once counter clockwise then thrice clockwise
Add Magnesium Gluconate and quickly follow with flobberworm Mucus
Take frozen runespoor eggs and remove the shells
Sprinkle the powdered moonstone onto the frozen eggs
Put the three eggs into cauldron and DO NOT STIR!
Wave wand in circular motion over cauldron ONCE and cast Vividus Excandesco.
Taylor glanced and smiled as the potion turned pink. She glanced at the page of the book to remember the next step. 5.Add syrup of hellebore until the potion turns turquoise… okay… yay! Something different beside stirring, simmering and powdered moonstone! Tay reached for the syrup of hellebore and measured it out, slowly pouring it into the pink potion. Taylor watched the potion as the syrup was poured in and smiled when it turned a pretty turquoise. There that step is done! How many more steps are left? She eyed the page and counted. 1…2…3…4…5…6…7…8…9…10…11… 11 more steps to go… Taylor sighed and eyed the next step, thinking about it. 6.Allow to simmer until the potion turns purple… okay it is simmer time again! This time it shall be purple… it was already purple before… it was purple on… step number… 3… hmmm… I am starting to see why it is a more complicated potion… Tay kept an eye on it as it simmered. She doodled on the parchment that she had written the list of ingredients on. She was a bit bored since she hated to wait but she needed to wait until the potion was purple.. Taylor sighed and grumbled, waiting for the sight of purple to come. Come on… come on… come on…
Instructions: place moonstone in cauldron and add water
boil water for 5 minutes
add belladonna and nettles
boil for 5 minutes
reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes
stir, 20 full strokes clockwise followed by 20 full strokes counter-clockwise
place the clear potion in a goblet
dip the very tip of wand in potion and incant, "Coloro!" while concentrating on the color you want the hair
rinse hair in 200 mL of potion
wait 5 minutes for color change
Notes:
Belladonna (also known as deadly nightshade) is highly poisonous and this potion should not be ingested.
Remaining potion should be used within 24 hours.
Hair color will remain for 24-48 hours.
Moonstone may be reused.
Tora went to the student cupboard and pulled out everything she would need. Nightshade, check. Dried nettles, check. Moonstone... where was that again? Her eyes roved the shelves until she found the box and tipped one into her hand, check. She walked purposefully back to her seat where, as per the instructions, she placed the moonstone in her cauldron and ("Aguamenti") filled the cauldron to roughly 500mL. "Finite." she flicked her wand before saying another spell, "Chaudensis."
As the water began to heat up and boil, she stepped to the side and pulled the herbs towards her to begin crushing them for the next part of the potion.
She double and triple checked to make sure she was crushing and powdering the correct plant. Belladonna, crushed. Nettles, powdered. Her morter ground away as she crushed the nightshade and measured out two grams of the stuff. Now that she had touched the poisonous plant, she had to be careful she didn't accidentally brush her fingers in her mouth. That could be bad. "Scorgify!" the mortar was clean now for the powdered nettles that had to go in. Before the five minutes were up she had a nice and fine pile of nettles. Measuring out five grams, she pushed the nettles pile next to the belladona one and cleaned up the mess. Always keep a clean workspace, that's what Gram taught her.

AH AH STIRRING. Almost forgetting that part, Benzi scrambled to grab his stirring spoon and hastily stuck it in his potion, stirring counterclockwise as he finished up the 8 drops of wormwood. PHEW. That had been close.
.. Right, next?
Eyeing his potion warily, he reached his right hand to the cup with the blood, gingerly wrapping his fingers around it and bring it atop of his cauldron. Slow and low. Sounded like a dance move. Carefully, he tipped his blood cup just above the surface of the potion, watching the oddly thick liquid pour into the potion and mix with the water.
Weird stuff, potions.
Once done, he hastily put down the cup as far away from his as was possible without leaving the potion's side and picked up the 4 billywig wings and 3 belladonna leaves. It felt weird in his hand, but he didn't think about it too much. Taking a breath, he put his palms together and crushed the mixture, allowing it to drop into the potion.
Stirring? Benzi glanced over at his book. Nope. Didn't say to stir.

She doodled down on her notebook her eyes darting at the time and the cauldron regularly. Five minutes were up. She reached out and reduced the heat as instructed and started waiting for another five minutes leaving the potion to simmer. And back to doodling. And maybe she'd stroll around and see what others were doing. She, though, didn't want to risk getting caught up with a conversation and lose track of time. Her eyes wandered around but she couldn't possibly tell what potion was being made just by looking at ingredients. Hmm..
While she debated to get up or not the five minutes were up so she turned to her textbook again to see what was next. Her finger hovered over the page then landed on the line she needed.
Time to stir.
She looked around searching for a spoon then grabbed it and faced the cauldron again. So she had to do stir twenty times clockwise then same number counterclockwise. Wasn't complicated but probably needed her full attention since she had to keep count.
The fifth-year rolled up her sleeves and started stirring clockwise counting silently her lips slightly parted. IT somehow felt easier if she wasn't counting silently. It was easier to confuse herself that way. "Eighteen, nineteen, twenty," she whispered and stopped for a sec then started stirring counterclockwise and this time she counted under her breath. "seven.....eight...nine." She kept her eyes on the potion during the process because she knew that once she's taken her eyes off it she'd get distracted and lose count. "Nineteen, twenty," With that she put the spoon aside and wiggled her arm a bit then rested it by her side. Next step now

The teacher, the most brilliant and amazing and kind person she already knew had gone away and left them alone to brew a potion by their own. It was so sad... Who had called her and what could be more important than teach them to prepare potions? Annabeth thought, while thumbed through her Potions book. Why it doesn't have any interesting potion? Something really useful, as Veritasserum or its antidote... Hm, Antidote for common Poisons shall be interesting... Let me try.
She opened her book at the page, 347 and read:

Wave your wand
Leave to brew and return in 40 minutes with Pewter Cauldron, 34 minutes with Brass cauldron and 30 minutes with copper cauldron.
Add 1 pinch of Unicorn Horns to your cauldron
Stir 2 times, clockwise
Add 2 Mistletoe Berries to your cauldron
Stir 2 times, anti-clockwise
Wave your wand to complete the potion
She thought it seemed to be easy and began to pick up the ingredients. She was happy that she would have to use her shiny new cauldrons. The girl pointed her wand to the three cauldrons and cast the cleaning spell three times. "Scourgify! Scourgify! Scourgify!"
Then she took a bezoar, put it into the mortar and crushed it with the pestle quickly. Crush. Crush. Crush.
Done.
She was about to put the four measures into the cauldron when she realize it was dry. But the procedure or the ingredients didn't ask for water. Although, if it was a potion, it should need water. She pointed her wand to the cauldron. "Aguamenti!.... Finite!" Half-cauldron filled with water seemed to be enough. The smiled at her cauldron and added the four measures of the crushed bezoar.

And so six minutes of staring commenced. Alice made sure to keep count, because she could have stared at West for a lot longer than her allowed time, but her potion was already bright yellow and ready for the next ingredient to be added.
Reluctantly moving her eyes from her lab partner to the chamomile, she took a pinch of it between her fingers and sprinkled it over the cauldron. The next step was slicing the jobberknoll feather and tongue, and the sixth year felt quite thankful for the gloves at this point. She got the tongue done first, shredding it as finely as possible with a silver blade before moving on to doing the feather. Once both were deemed acceptable, Alice added those to the mixture as well.
And then she stirred, five times counterclockwise followed by one clockwise rotation.
She was a pro at this.

So... the next step. Ten drops of murtlap essence, yeah? And then stirring. See, this was much better than the cracking eggs part. Which... after a quick glance over his instructions told him that there wasn't any of that to come up again. Good. He... didn't think he could handle doing that again.
Alec grabbed the bottle of murtlap essence and added in ten drops to his cauldron as carefully as possible, making sure to count each drop as it fell. Once he had reached the number ten in his mind, the boy placed the bottle back down again and away from his main workspace area. Carefully. Because that was essential to potions.
Picking up his wooden stirrer, he gave it a quick "Scourgify!" before placing it into his cauldron. Stir eight times, right? Counter clockwise? One... two... three... Counter clockwise. ... four... five... six... Still counter clockwise. ... seven... eight! There! He picked up the stirrer again and placed it down on the side. ... He'd... just have to make sure to wash that again if it was needed. Which, according to the instructions, wasn't necessary. ... That was a little weird.
Shrug.
The Hufflepuff then picked up the two sprigs of Parsley and scanned over the instructions again. Loosely crush them into the cauldron? He held them over them over his cauldron and started crushing them, watching as the flakes fell into his potion. Loosely crush. How loosely was he meant to crush these sprigs of Parsely?
Instructions: 1) Fill cauldron with water 2) Add valerian root and salamander blood, one drop at a time, alternating between the two 3) Add the dock leaves to mortar and crush 4) Break frozen ashwinder egg into mortar 5) Add fluxweed to mortar 6) Add mixture from mortar into cauldron 7) Add Murtlap Essence 8) Stir eight times counter clockwise 9) Add parsley sprigs loosely crushing them into cauldron

11) Slice Basil leaves with a Silver Knife
12) Stab whole papaya with same silver knife stuff basil in papaya's wounds

15) Add thinly sliced Reishi Mushroom to cauldron

Attempting to keep her pace, Ves didn't slow down as she went ahead and removed the silver knife from her kit. Luckily, she had less trouble than with the needle. Placing it off to the side for a moment, she went ahead and gathered up the devil's weed leaves. Eight of them...just like the ingredients list stated. It also stated things about the veins of the leaves. The knife was to be used to slice those open...
Seemed easy enough.
Cleaning the blade of the knife with scourgify, because that seemed like the right thing to do, Ves tried to breath out her nerves as she began cutting into the leaves......Into the veiny parts, anyway. One by one, she repeated the action, hands shaking somewhat. The nerves never went away in these instances. The Professor wasn't present...but she was still scared about messing up.

Blinking behind her goggles, she finished up the last one and set the knife down. There. Done. All that was left to do now was add them into the cauldron careful-like and that would be that. It had specified 'careful', too. So, Ves took that to mean SLOW. So, SLOWLY, she picked up each leaf and dropped them into the cauldron one by one...vein facing downward.
Gosh, what was next? Scanning her notes and fighting the urge to doodle more, Ves seen the words 'mortar' and 'pestle'. She went ahead and removed those things from her kit, cleaning them because other people were cleaning stuff a lot. So, it seemed right.

Ingredients

• 1 poppy flower → red poppies are the most potent

Procedure
• clean cauldron (Scourgify!) ✔
• fill completely with water (Aguamenti!) ✔
• turn on the burner and bring water to a boil. ✔
• once the water boils, add the valerian and kava kava (mixes easier if in liquid form) ✔
• clean 18 carat gold needle for next step (Scourgify!) ✔
• pierce the nightshade berry, making sure to get a single drop of juice on the tip of the needle ✔
• set the berry on fire, using the magical burner under cauldron, burning it up entirely along with any remaining juice not on the needle ✔
• let the drop on the needle fall into the potion without touching anything other than the needle ✔
• burn any remaining juice from needle, clean it, and return to supplies ✔
• using silver knife, slice each leaf of devil’s weed carefully along the vein ✔
• place sliced leaves carefully into cauldron/potion ✔
• dip pestle into the liquid, shaking excess off so it’s just moist
• place hemlock seeds into mortar, then crush with moist pestle until mushy (paste-like consistency)
• spoon the hemlock seed paste into cauldron with a wooden spoon
• put on goggles so fumes don't make you sleepy
• place RED poppy flower on top of the liquid in cauldron, letting the heat from the potion wilt it and sink it to the bottom of the cauldron
• if using potion to forget/not experience dreams, stop here
• add Calea Zacatechichi leaves whole to potion, as they will disintegrate
• (potion should be purple-colored) wave wand in a semi-circle motion over potion, thinking about a recent dream, then cast Sopororis
• strain potion before using

Taylor beamed as the potion turned purple finally then she checked the page for the next step. 7.Shake powdered porcupine quills vigorously until they are ready and then add until the potion turns red… great… how fun… Tay made sure that the quills were powdered and the grinding stuff was clean then she shook then vigorously until they were ready though some of her curls slipped out of her ponytail from shaking so much. She had to ignore it as she started to pour them into the potion until it started to turn red. Taylor wrinkled her nose as she fixed her curls back into a tight ponytail and even made sure that no loose hair got into her ingredients or even the potion to make sure that the potion doesn't get contaminated. Red is such a disgusting color… Tay grumbled and looked from the cauldron to the page in the book that had the potion on it. next step… next step… step 8… which is… 8.Stir until the potion turns orange… greeeeat more stirring… Taylor frowned as she picked up the thing to stir with and started to stir like it told herself. She watched as she stirred and stop stirring when the potion turned orange. Tay smiled at the potion. Orange is so much prettier than yucky red… next step? Which would be… She glanced at the steps to find step 9.

Well, that was entirely unhelpful, Caterina. Not only did she not know the differences between elves and humans... but she didn't cook with wine vinegar. Mo stuck his tongue out at her before sniffing the cup again. He liked how it smelled... sort of like salads, if he had to put a name to it.
"You know these Dransuls are meat eaters? So it's sort of like my exact opposite, right? I'm an animal that only eats plants and its a plant that only eats animals. I should be a Dransul best friend or something," Mo chatted blithely with Cat, whether she listened or not... so more like AT Cat, as he carefully laid one of the leaves in the bottom of his mortar. He attacked it with the pestle, crushing any semblance of shape or form out of the leaf.
Was there supposed to be some sort of liquid produced, though? He lifted the pestle and frowned at the contents. Mucky yucky mess. Better keep crushing. It only took a few more rounds of the pestle before Mo spotted the Dransul acid on the dark stone surface.
Where was his dropper? Did he have one? Mo patted down his pockets, patted down Cat's pockets, and finally found it under his book. Oops. Using the dropper, he siphoned up the acid and carefully added three drops to his cauldron.
One... two... aaaaaaand three.

Ingredients:
Water
2 cups elf-made wine vinegar
3 leaves from a Dransul plant
3 billywig stingers
Instructions:
Fill cauldron with water
Heat over a low flame
Add elf-made wine vinegar
Crush one Dransul leaf in mortar until acid forms
Add three drops Dransul acid to cauldron with a dropper
Stir potion 3 times counter-clockwise
Add billywig stingers while potion is still moving (Potion should appear a dark burgundy in color)
Point wand at potion, move in a spiraling motion upwards while casting "Agitatum"
Using "Glacius", quickly douse flame and cool cauldron down, potion will continue to move.
Let simmer a month.
Colour will have darkened to black, consistency will be thicker
Ladle the potion in a developing tray
With gloves on, pass the negative in the potion
One minute later, take it out and put it in a second tray, covering it with water
Allow to dry

... That was his next ingredient. Honey.
Alec took hold of his wooden spoon and cleaned it again. He then scooped up a spoonful of raw honey -- RAW! -- and added it into his cauldron. Another spoonful was measured out -- was this one nearly the same amount as the previous spoonful? -- and added into his cauldron. The same thing was done once more before... Alec stared at the honey. Honey reminded him a bit too much of pancakes which... only made him hungry. He then looked up and over at Ells, trying to mentally ask her whether she wanted to go and get pancakes later. Because pancakes!
... Moving on...
The seventeen year old shook his head and turned his attention back towards the potion he was making. Five basil leaves that needed to be thinly sliced. He grabbed his knife and magically cleaned that before starting on the slicing. Thinly. As thin as possible. A small frown formed on the boy's lips as he continued slicing the leaves thinly. This was nothing like slicing the tomatoes he needed to slice for his BLT sandwiches. ... BLT. Sandwiches. Could he have THAT too?
Once the leaves were thinly sliced, he looked back over at the instructions. Stab a papaya? BLINK. Were these legit instructions? He looked up and around to see what the others were doing before... realising... that everyone was making their own potions. Right. He looked back at the instructions and frowned. Okay. Papaya then. He grabbed the fruit and poked his knife into it here and there. This... was very random. Once that was done and he was sure that there were enough wounds in the papaya, he began stuffing the sliced basil leaves into the wounds in the papaya. There. All good, yeah?
Now... whole papaya with basil leaves? Meet potion. All of that was added into his cauldron. Whole. Yeah.
Instructions: 1) Fill cauldron with water 2) Add valerian root and salamander blood, one drop at a time, alternating between the two 3) Add the dock leaves to mortar and crush 4) Break frozen ashwinder egg into mortar 5) Add fluxweed to mortar 6) Add mixture from mortar into cauldron 7) Add Murtlap Essence 8) Stir eight times counter clockwise 9) Add parsley sprigs loosely crushing them into cauldron 10) Add raw honey 11) Slice Basil leaves with a Silver Knife 12) Stab whole papaya with same silver knife stuff basil in papaya's wounds 13) Add Papaya to cauldron

Ok, so this was taking FOREVER to heat up. Caleb felt like he was waiting for hours for this water to boil! Note to self - definitely practice the Incendio charm at some point. Finally after a good twenty minutes, his water began to boil and he could move on. He checked the next step in the potion and read it aloud to himself.
"Add armadillo bile one drop at a time. After each drop, stir potion 2 times clockwise. Potion should turn pink if done correctly," he read. Well that was good - if he messed up early in the game, he'd know and could start over without losing much time! Although, he hoped he wouldn't mess up at all. That'd be no good.
He took the armadillo bile and slowly added one tiny drop. Then, he stirred his potion twice, making sure to go in the clockwise direction. There. So far so good. Now another...and more stirring...then another drop...
This continued until he added all nine drops into his potion. Once he finished stirring it the final time, he was pleased to see that it turned pink, just as described. AWESOME!

Vesper stared at her notes.
Was she reading this right?
She was supposed to dip the pestle...into the cauldron...and shake it off some so it was just moist? And then she was supposed to use it in the mortar to crush up the Hemlock seeds to a paste? Ves reread the words several times, willing herself to grasp their meaning. It was just like that sometimes. She could read something and not fully comprehend what she was seeing or the words.
Breaths, though. She just needed to continue taking breaths and all would be okay....Because if she stopped taking breaths, she would pass out and the potion would be ruined because she wouldn't be able to turn the heat off or add the rest of the ingredients. Basically.
SLOWLY lifting the pestle up, she inched it towards the cauldron's surface, eyes STARING...................
Just a bit further...and further....AND FURTHER....
Once she'd dipped it into the mixture, Ves quickly pulled it back out and shook it...almost dropping it into the cauldron more than once. EEP. That would have been DISASTROUS! More breathing, though...With the cup of seeds already added to the mortar, she immediately set the pestle down into it, relieved she hadn't dropped the thing.....And then she set to work, taking some of the nerves out on the contents. They needed to be a pastey consistency, according to the notes. So, Vesper worked her arm until they were nearing that look. You know, the PASTE look.
Producing a wooden spoon from her kit...because they were apparently using all the things today....she cleaned it...because others were cleaning all the things...and started scooping the paste into the cauldron. Was this right? It didn't say anything about stirring or counter-stirring. Whatever it was called. Clockwise and counterwise. That was it. Yea, that wasn't being mentioned. So, you know, it wasn't happening.
Also, she'd been had her goggles on.
So...CHECK. CHECK. CHECK. CHECK.

She leaned over and looked in her book for what to do next and picked up a handful of the crushed chamomile and dropped it in. She set the heat of the cauldron to simmer the potion for 20 minutes and waited.

break the Valerian sprigs using your hands and add to the poppy seed dust
add the contents of the mortar to cauldron
add leeches to cauldron (wear gloves) → potion will turn a deep dark red
move wand in straight jabbing motion and say 'Verax' (potion will turn clear)
Making sure his hands were clean of the belladonna and billywig wings, Benzi followed the next instruction and took the seven valerian sprigs in his hands. He broke them into the two tablespoons of poppy seeds he'd made into dust before, then cleaned his hands on his robes and dropped the mixture into his cauldron.
... Looking curiously to see if something dramatic had happened to the potion, he found that there was nothing particularly interesting going on in the murky mixture. The eleven year old scrunched up his nose as he remembered the blood, the wormwood drops and the belladonna leaves.
And one was supposed to be able to drink this later without dying? Hmm. Better test THAT on someone else.
Now the leeches. Grabbing the gloves Mummy had picked out for him in Diagon Alley (the expensive kind, she'd insisted even though the cheaper ones looked pretty much the same to him) he popped them on then reached for his jar with the leeches. Five leeches.
"One... two... three... fou- four... five," Benzi counted under his breath, the fourth one almost sliding out of his grip before going into the cauldron. Taking off the gloves, he tried to peer into the potion to spot the leeches dissolving or something but he couldn't really see much. Eh.
Oh, but WAIT. It was changing! Fascinated, Benzi halted momentarily to watch his potion change into a dark murky red colour, sort of like the blood. Was that supposed to happen?!! The eleven year old checked his book and grinned. It didn't say murky, but it was DEFINITELY supposed to be red. YES!

HE WAS NEARLY DONE!
Feeling slightly better about this, Alec took hold of the ginger root before glancing over at the instructions again. Grated ginger root, yeah? And over his cauldron? That meant... he needed his grater, which he needed to clean. A quick Scourgify later, and the boy had his ginger root in one hand and the grater in the other, both of which were held over his cauldron. He took a deep breath and started grating the ginger root, letting the parts of ginger fall into his cauldron.
Once that was done, he glanced at the watch on his wrist. Five minutes, he had to leave this for. And those five minutes started now! While the potion was left to simmer, he might as well start on the next part, yeah? Which included cutting up seventeen of that weird mushroom into thin slices. SEVENTEEN. And THIN slices! How was he going to achieve that in the space of five minutes?!
Panicking slightly, the boy looked back at his watch. Well, that was ten, nearly fifteen, precious seconds gone from his five minutes. Deciding not to waste any more time, Alec cleaned his knife once more before starting on the slicing process. He couldn't help but glance down at his watch every now and then, just to see how much time had passed. It looked like he was cutting it thin -- geddit? -- which only made the Hufflepuff feel even MORE nervous about this whole process. And to think he was nervous about cracking an egg open.
... Cracking that egg was HARD.
When he was done with the slicing, he glanced down at his watch again. Okay, he had gone a couple of seconds over, that was completely fine, right? Yeah? ... Lafay wasn't here to tell him. He shrugged before adding the cut up mushrooms into his cauldron.
Now. He just had ONE MORE STEP LEFT. That weird spell. Alec grabbed his wand and held it up over his cauldron. "Sanum!" he cried, moving his wand in a fast, strinking oblique motion. There. He was ALL DONE. He let out a sigh of relief before grinning down at his potion. He had no idea whether this was good enough or not but... he was going to go with it. He turned off the heat, letting the potion cool.
... And... what was it that Lafay had said they were meant to do? Vial and label? He grabbed a vial and, after giving it a quick clean with Scourgify, poured some of the potion into it. The stopped was put on the vial and he held onto it. He then scribbled down a quick label for his vial because... Lafay would need to know that it was his. Plus she had said this, hadn't she?

Now to wait for it to simmer.

Directions Fill Cauldron with water Bring it to a boil Crush and add a clove of garlic Add one drop bundimun secretion - make sure you wear dragon hide gloves when handling it! Slice the crocodile eye Stir once clockwise Stir 3 times counter-clockwise
Let simmer
Add 50 grams of powdered cockroach
Add the peppermint, lemon or pine needles to scent it (don't be surprised if it changes colour)
Oh a cleaning potion that was interesting. "Oh yeah I could see him liking that. After all the tricks he's pulled that last two terms I think I'd like to accidentally switching it with a fur growing potion." Was that mean? She wasn't sure, but really the man did still need a good trick pulled on him. Something to get him back for a few of the pranks sneezing toot, beard, ID that he had pulled. Smiling back at Wade not wanting to seem mean or anything, "Sounds like an interesting one though. I don't think I've made that one."
She looked back to her own potion, "Oh do you remember talking about the maze and the potion part of the triwizard in History of Magic. Well when I was looking through the book I found a shrinking solution which I'm assuming is the same one. I thought I'd give it a shot." She grinned at Wade, "Want to be short Kitty?" She chuckled to herself before looking at her notes once more.

to shrink Kitty
Instructions: Prepare and measure all ingredients ahead of time. Daisy roots and giner roots should be evenly chopped. Make sure all of the peel is removed from the shrivelfig. Caterpillar slices should be small and even. Dried nettles should be crushed, but not powdered, in a mortar and pestle. Leech juice will be provided by the professor (please walk carefully to the desk at the front of collect it before you begin brewing the potion).
Add daisy roots, shrivelfig, caterpillar slices, and nettle to 500 mL boiling water. Stir (direction is unimportant) for 2 minutes.
Add a dash of leech juice. Allow the solution to stew, stirring occassionally, for half an hour.[
Add the ginger root and stir (direction is unimportant) for 2 minutes. Remove cauldron from the fire and allow potion to cool.
Write your name and house on two vials. Very carefully distribute your potion into the two vials (do not allow the potion to touch anything that is not the vial or the ladle- do not get on your hands!) Bring one to the front for grading and keep one vial at your desk for testing.
Pointing her wand to her cauldron Min silently Scourgify the cauldron and then used aguamenti to fill her her cauldron. Then she pointed "Incendio" to start the flame. Jumping only slightly when it started. She took a deep breath and let the water boil. Once the water was boiling, Minerva placed the daisy roots and Shrivelfig into the cauldron.

Mo leaned waaaaay over his cauldron after the acid was added, trying to note any changes to the color and consistency of the potion. And it was... steaming his eyebrows into wild and unmanageable tufts. That's what it was doing. He jerked back down again and tried to smooth his eyebrows back into place.
"Do I look like I'm turning into a werewolf?" Mo decided he'd bugged Cat enough, so this question was directed at Vesper, who was working nearby. His hair was a little steamed-crazy too, and he made what he imagined was a werewolf-like face in her direction.
Mo waved his stirring stick at Ves, a dramatic flourish that ended with him plunking it into his cauldron. Now he just needed to stir it three times counter-clockwise, quickly enough that it got the liquid moving and kept it moving long enough to add the next ingredient. There wasn't room for screwing up, since he only got three full turns.
One... two... and three. The potion swirled, rising higher against the sides of the cauldron and creating a little depression in the center. That spot, there in the center, was where Mo dropped his three billywig stingers. One, two... and three.
Golly, there were loads of THREES in this potion. He leaned over it again to watch if it turned burgandy.

Add billywig stingers while potion is still moving (Potion should appear a dark burgundy in color)
Point wand at potion, move in a spiraling motion upwards while casting "Agitatum"
Using "Glacius", quickly douse flame and cool cauldron down, potion will continue to move.
Let simmer a month.
Colour will have darkened to black, consistency will be thicker
Ladle the potion in a developing tray
With gloves on, pass the negative in the potion
One minute later, take it out and put it in a second tray, covering it with water
Allow to dry

Use/Effect:
Loosens the tongue, has no taste, no smell, no color.
Ingredients
Water
8 drops of Essence of Wormwood
One cup of Jobberknoll blood
4 Billywig Wings
3 Belladonna leaves
2 tablespoons of poppy seeds
7 Sprigs of Valerian
5 leeches
Procedure
clean cauldron
fill it with water
light burner
add 8 drops of Essence of Wormwood one drop at a time
stirring your potion in a counter-clock motion.
add your Jobberknoll blood (low and slow stream)
crush 4 Billywig Wings and the 3 Belladonna leaves in your hands and let the pieces fall into the cauldron[/s]
clean the mortar and use it to crush the poppy seeds to dust
break the Valerian sprigs using your hands and add to the poppy seed dust
add the contents of the mortar to cauldron
add leeches to cauldron (wear gloves) → potion will turn a deep dark red
move wand in straight jabbing motion and say 'Verax' (potion will turn clear)
He took it back. Potions WAS sort of fun. It was dull when making it 'cause Benzi had no idea WHY he needed these ingredients to make this specific potion but the end part seemed REALLY cool. Pulling out his wand from its holster, he jabbed it forwards at the cauldron and said, VERY clearly "Verax."
He was not breathing. NOPE. He was staring at his cauldron, which didn't seem to be changing colour. OH NOES. NOOOOO. Not after all that hard wo- OH HEY! "It worked!" he let out with a grin as the potion turned clear and looked a lot like the water he'd started out with.
SUCCESS.
Glancing about for students who'd also finished their potions, he saw they were marking their vials with their names, which really made sense. He poured his potion into a second clean flask with the utmost care, careful not to get any on his hands. He assumed nothing deadly would happen, but he quite enjoyed life without pain and unnecessary suffering.
Right. Labels. Making sure to get the order right since it wouldn't do to mark them wrong and then not get ANY credit, he dipped his quill in ink and copied down the names of the potions from the book. Then he filled out his details and stepped back to appreciate his handiwork.

So, the good news was that nothing had exploded yet. SUCCESS. A small one, yes...but still a success on some level. Also, Vesper hadn't cut herself, burnt herself, or had something fly up and pop and/or splash her in the face and/or eye. This was a great potions lesson thus far.
The next step sounded simple enough. All Ves had to do was gently place the pretty red poppy flower on the potions surface and watch it sink. That was it. Because of her musings with Marcus, she knew that poppy flowers stood for beauty, magic, fertility, and eternal life. She wasn't at all sure who fertility might have fit into the mix...but all the other things held merit. Eternal life through ones dreams, where all things are possible...And beauty and magic mixing in with that because dreams can be very magical and beautiful.
Vesper found herself nodding in response to her own thoughts. Flowers. She enjoyed them.
Carefully scooping in the flower in her hand, she SLOWLY moved it towards the cauldron, almost holding her breath as she moved. WHAT IF SHE DROPPED IT ON THE GROUND AND RUINED IT? What if she was too rough? EEP. With those thoughts, Ves was moving somewhat slower, snailing her way towards the flower's destination. It might not have been the quickest transport, but she eventually made it over and SLOWLY added the flower to the top of the concoction. THERE.
She stared as the flower blossom floated for several moments....STARED as it started to lose its brilliance and shrivel up into itself...And then it was losing buoyancy, dipping down into the depths of the mixture. It was almost sad the way it had disappeared. Almost like it had drowned without knowing how to save itself.
How very sad, indeed.
Momentarily distracted, something caught her attention out of the corner of her eye...and Ves looked up towards a spoon-waving Marcus. She tried extremely hard not to smile at him, but it was kinda impossible. He was a goof like that. In response, she rolled her eyes and saluted him, still fighting the smile. SHE WAS FOCUSING HERE, MARCUS. GEEEEEZ.

Potions Lesson One

THE DREAMER'S ELIXIR
Ingredients
• water ✔
• 1 cup of valerian root ✔
• half a cup of Kava Kava ✔
• 1 deadly nightshade berry ✔
• 8 leaves of devil's weed ✔
• 1 cup of Poison Hemlock seeds ✔
• 1 poppy flower → red poppies are the most potent ✔
• 10 leaves of Calea Zacatechichi
Procedure
• clean cauldron (Scourgify!) ✔
• fill completely with water (Aguamenti!) ✔
• turn on the burner and bring water to a boil. ✔
• once the water boils, add the valerian and kava kava (mixes easier if in liquid form) ✔
• clean 18 carat gold needle for next step (Scourgify!) ✔
• pierce the nightshade berry, making sure to get a single drop of juice on the tip of the needle ✔
• set the berry on fire, using the magical burner under cauldron, burning it up entirely along with any remaining juice not on the needle ✔
• let the drop on the needle fall into the potion without touching anything other than the needle ✔
• burn any remaining juice from needle, clean it, and return to supplies ✔
• using silver knife, slice each leaf of devil’s weed carefully along the vein ✔
• place sliced leaves carefully into cauldron/potion ✔
• dip pestle into the liquid, shaking excess off so it’s just moist ✔
• place hemlock seeds into mortar, then crush with moist pestle until mushy (paste-like consistency) ✔
• spoon the hemlock seed paste into cauldron with a wooden spoon ✔
• put on goggles so fumes don't make you sleepy ✔
• place RED poppy flower on top of the liquid in cauldron, letting the heat from the potion wilt it and sink it to the bottom of the cauldron ✔
• if using potion to forget/not experience dreams, stop here
• add Calea Zacatechichi leaves whole to potion, as they will disintegrate
• (potion should be purple-colored) wave wand in a semi-circle motion over potion, thinking about a recent dream, then cast Sopororis
• strain potion before using
