| | The Observatory Feel like looking at some stars? You've come to the right place. From here in the Hogwarts Observatory you can see a tiny fraction of the 400 billion or so stars found in the Milky Way Galaxy. This circular but spacious room has been locked and opened as many times as there have been Astronomy professors staffed at the school. EXCEPT THERE ARE NO TELESCOPES BECAUSE THEY WERE REPOSSESSED BY GOBLINS!!
Best be cleaning those before using them.
Large star charts are pinned to the walls which anyone is free to study for own leisure or school assignment. Don't try and take the charts down though, as they are charmed to warn if somebody tries to remove them.
Stargazing is an activity best practiced at night and therefore the observatory remains unlocked. Students adhere by a curfew and after that hour no students should be found out of bed. If you desire to study the heavens after curfew, you need a signed note from Professor Flamsteed showing that you are allowed to stay up after hours. If caught after hours without a signed note you can expect that there will be consequences like loss of house points or detention.
The observatory is place for scientific inquiry much like the library is a place to immerse yourself in books, since it’s a shrine to our massively beautiful universe. Please respect any professor or student spending time in the observatory by not running around or shouting in high pitched voices. Just because Professor Flamsteed isn't currently in the observatory doesn't mean he isn't watching what is going on. OOC: you do not HAVE to RP your character asking permission from Professor Flamsteed in his office before posting here after hours and may pretend that you received permission. Also, please keep in mind that while looking at the stars can be a romantic endeavor, that is not the purpose of the observatory and any mischief may result in points being deducted or detention.

Dumbledore.
This was an especially sad location because such a great man had died here and Ella had read all about the former headmaster. Swell guy, Dumbledore was. Or at least that's what she'd gathered from what she'd read about him. The sixteen year old glanced at Nessie before looking around a bit. It was sad, searching for someone's like...death imprint. It was also sad to see the observatory without the telescopes. Yup, badger was still bummed out about that. "I'm just gonna try over here, okay?" She said quietly to Nessie, taking out her wand.
The blonde made the counter-clockwise circle, said, "Spiritum Revelio," and pointed through the circle. Stareeeee.
Blink. "No Dumbledore over here."

Yay! Food! "Sure," nom nom nom, "Um...let's see..." Her eyes scanned the list again. "We could either look for Lestrange or Voldemort..." Either one was fine.
She walked along the tables, trying to think of the best place to die but really, no one ever died in good places or they'd be on their way to the kitchen right now. She took another step then aimed her wand. "Spiritum Revelio!"....Nothing...that's fine. There would have been a terribly uncomfortable place to die anyway. "Spiritum Revelio!"
Oh! There we go! "This looks kinda feminine, doesn't it? I'd say it's Bellatrix so you can jot that down. If it's not it doesn't matter. Not like he's here to see it." History, meh. Jotting down Bellatrix Lestrange's name and location of death before leading Lex out of the Great Hall, Alice contemplated where to go next. The next dead Hogwartian that came to mind was Albus Dumbledore, that one old Headmaster with the crooked nose. Where had he died again? It took her a few minutes to remember that he was in the Astronomy tower, and then she was leading Lex up there as fast as her legs could take her. "Dunno where Dumby died," she informed her, still munching on her roll. That thing was tasty. "Let's find out." COUNTERclockwise circle and a point through it. Had that worked? "See an outline anywhere?" Or did she have to redo it?

"See an outline anywhere?" Or did she have to redo it? She was really beginning to question Alice's choices on where they were looking. She'd brought the parchment she'd scribbles locations down on so they wouldn't have have to do guess work. Didn't this mean they could make informed decisions that wouldn't have them going up seven flights of stairs in any on go????
It wasn't until after they'd come to a stop that she pulled out the parchment to get some idea, despite Alice having said it.
Dumbledore. The old dead guy?....er former Headmaster who did a whole bunch of cool things. Yeah, that sounded more appropriate.
She stuck the last of the roll into her mouth while she watched the spell being cast. "Uh...no...I'll try over there." She took a few steps away, surveyed the area. Again, it came down to looking for the best place to kick the bucket. Over there looked nice enough so she took a few more steps and aimed her wand, mimicking Alice's wand movement. "Spiritum Revelio!"
Ooooo!! "There! Jot that down!" Quickly too so they could leave. "And this time I'm picking the place."

Blink. "No Dumbledore over here." These places were kinda solemn to Ness now that she thought of the people that had died in them. A bit creepy..and to think of it quite a lot of people had died in this school. The seventh year was just glad she wasn't around here when those deaths happened, because deaths really scared her especially for one certain reason and that was her best friend. But no she refused to think about that now she needed to focus on her homework.
Nod. Nod towards Ella, who was now attempting the spell. Pout..come on..shine light..or not. Mellow. "I'll try find him?" She looked around trying to think of where he actually would have died. Didn't he fall over or something? Hmmm..she went to the opposite direction of Ella and she cast the spell. Counter-clockwise circle. Check. "Spiritum Revelio!" Spell said, check. Stab through the circle. Check. Spell casted...and green light?
Yep. There it was. Creepy thing. The Hufflepuff blinked at it then closed her eyes tightly. "Here." She said only opening her eyes to look back at Ella.

Ella nodded at Ness, hoping she'd have better luck. The blonde paced back and forth as she watched, both eager and a bit nervous to find the glow. It just felt a bit weird knowing the exact location someone died. Weird and exciting and sad and a whole bunch of other things too. Death was definitely a complicated emotion to think about.
Oh...she found it. "Well done," Ella said quietly, making her way over. Then it was her turn to try. She made the circular motion and said, "Spiritum Revelio!" Then stuck her wand through the middle. PAUSE. "Oh...there he is." Frown.
Moment of silence for Dumbledore, mmkay?

| HoM Post #4 urine trouble | Pat's Strong Confident Other Half | Pees Like a Champion Unicorn Racehorse Okay, last place... last place... he could do this.
No... wait... he had one more to go after this! Groan.
And the place he was going to? The penultimate place? ... It was one he was dreading to head over to because of reasons. Reasons that he had done a pretty good job of keeping buried so far.
The boy ascended the stairs carefully, trying to think about Astronomy and you know, happier things. Things that weren't linked to death. Reaching the landing, the boy looked around at the circular Observatory. Okay... the sooner he found the green outline, the sooner he could get out of here, yeah? And if he kept a positive mentality about this, he was sure to find the green outlines sooner. Probably.
Hoping that this would work, the boy held up his wand and started casting the spell Vinteren had taught them in class. After his day, he had gotten quite used to saying the spell over and over again and, what had seemed like a tongue twister at first, was actually becoming easier to pronounce. What wasn't becoming easier was finding the actual outlines. It was the courtyard situation all over again and the boy was not happy about this. "Spiritum Revelio!" Nothing. ... "Spiritum Revelio!" ... Still nothing."Spiritum Revelio!"
... Squint.
There was that outline! Alec grimaced slightly as he looked over towards the edge where the green outline was faintly visible. ... Yeah... he didn't like this at all. He could go now, though, right? And take the notes he needed to take as he walked or something. He did not want to stay here any longer.

If Mo was Coul, she'd have pouted and bagged being carried or at least half of the way. She daren't ask the guy she'd known on name basis for barely no time at all. It was probably better that she walked it herself. Independence. She still hated stairs though.
Elodie was as inquisitive as the next teenager, and the thought of an ex-Headmaster dying here was pretty cool in her books. Cool and sad, because Head's got their title for a reason, and he musta been a pretty decent guy to stick around for so long. Once they reached their destination, Elodie walked around a little bit, before looking over her shoulder at her companion. "Hey Mo? I know they said he died in here...but didn't they also say he fell? Would his outline show up here...or...down...on the ground where he landed?" Questions, she had them.
Prime location for him to be able to fall aswell was oveerrrrr...there, hmm. She moved toward there, still mulling over her own question instead of casting the spell.

Excellent 'cause they knew who died here and how and generally where, but also excellent because Mo just liked it up here. He didn't pay Elodie a lot of attention at first, since she was looking for a spot and Mo was just enjoying the view.
People brought girls up here. Maybe he should try that sometime. Maybe.
What was she saying? "He was killed with the Killing Curse, so he died before he fell. I think it would be up here... and maybe near the railing," Mo offered, finally turning back to join Elodie with an apologetic smile. "Let's try the whole length of it. I'll start from this end."
He did the wand turny thing. " Spiritum Revelio, Spiritum Revelio, Spiritum Revelio." No luck so far.

He did the wand turny thing. "Spiritum Revelio, Spiritum Revelio, Spiritum Revelio." No luck so far. "Mm." Of course.
She should have known. "At least he didn't know he was falling then." Well there was an even more negative tone on the subject of death and dead people. Elodie sighed once and wiggled her nose again. She'd just intend to forget about all of this after the homework was all done. All this dead was making her stomach feel iffy, and it wasn't even a hungry iffy.
Start either end. Meet in the middle, or..something like that.
Raising her wand, Elodie started at her elected end and shuffled along a little with each cast. "Spiritum Revelio," no, "Spiritum Revelio," a few times more, and then; "Spiritum Revelio......" Th..there. She fell quiet as she found her cast of the spell had brought to view the green outline she knew they were looking for. Well no one else had died here in the same exact place - right? She said nothing though, leaving Mo to continue with his round, till they met at the Dumbledore.
Give the Ravenclaw's a chance, huh?

Give the Ravenclaw's a chance, huh? It seemed like Elodie had found something, and sure enough, she was waiting right there in the middle for him. Mo paused beside the Hufflepuff girl and pointed his wand at the railing. " Spiritum Revelio." There was a green outline, taller than he would have expected, and it left him feeling sort of hollow for a moment.
It didn't last... he'd go get cocoa and some ice cream and he'd feel right again soon.
"I guess that's that." He turned a wry smile on the girl. "It was nice working with you, Elodie. Maybe next time it won't be so... morbid."

| History of Magic: Post 1. Zombie Apocalypse Team Leader ★ ★ in a crown of pepperoni and artisan cheese
Dylan had made a list for this History of Magic homework...The list, which had been checked...and then double-checked for accuracy, was clutched tightly in his hands as he made his way up the stairs. This whole thing...about checking for spirits, made the Slytherin Captain vastly uncomfortable. His parents had always told him not to bother the dead...Wasn't this similar to bothering them? Sure seemed like it to him...
Continuing on his way up, he'd mapped out a plan of attack. He'd start at he Observatory...and then start making his way down through the school...hitting other points. Room of Requirement....Library....Then out to the grounds...
Stepping out into the Observatory, Dylan spotted a few of his peers. They'd seemed to have a similar idea about checking for Albus Dumbledore...The greatest Headmaster to ever live...or whatever. Dylan didn't know much about him...So, that statement couldn't be true by his standards. Surely there were others that had been just as EPIC. Just tossing that out there...
Pulling his wand...he stepped closer to one of the windows. Something he'd read...Dumbledore had been cursed by Severus Snape and then had fallen out the window. So...if his spirit had left a trace...it'd surely be there.
In fact, in preparation for this homework, Dylan had practiced...So, the spell wasn't so new to him now. He had it all sorted. Taking a deep breath, he cleared his mind and focused on what he needed to accomplish. A spirit...Needed to see some green light...or green glowing stuff...However one wanted to describe it. Breeeeeeeeeeath. "Spiritum Revelio!" Counterclockwise circle! POINT through the center! Making a face, he was almost relieved that nothing appeared immediately...No...wait....Meh, there was a VERY faint greenish glow of SOMETHING...but it was faint that one could argue it wasn't there at all...Heh. Weird...
He decided to try again...Maybe his hesitation had effected the spell. Clearing his mind, Dylan aimed his wand again. "Spiritum revelio!" There was a bit more power behind the spell this time as he performed and went through the motions. Still, though...As it had before...nothing outright appeared.
Okay. Fail.
Next area, then.

Even though she was smaller and more prone to complaining. Mo stuck out his tongue at the back of Alice's head when she wasn't looking, although he soon stepped up beside her and looked generally where she was pointing.
It wasn't like finding Polaris was hard anymore, not now that they'd been doing it over and over and over. He pointed out Ursa Major and that pointed right at Ursa Minor and Polaris. Bingo.
"Congrats. Maybe I should get you a cookie later. I found it too." Hehe.

"Congrats. Maybe I should get you a cookie later. I found it too." Hehe. "Cookies sound good. And I'll get you milk in a sippy cup." She clearly still was not over pinching. Delicate skin and all.
Next was sextant usage. Alice lifted up the device to her eye, using the clamps and adjusts to make sure Polaris was the reference point, because there was no sun in sight at this time of day (that was Airey's reasoning, right?). The angle read 32 this time, so she scribbled that onto her parchment and did the calculations before turning back to Mo. "Did you get something around fifty eight?" Quote:
Latitude = 90 degrees - sextant angle
Latitude = 90 - 32
Latitude = 58
If he didn't, he was wrong and needed to redo his arithmetic.

If he didn't, he was wrong and needed to redo his arithmetic. A sippy cup? Baby jokes? That was just cruel, really. Mo was going to make faces again, but he was too busy trying to get Polaris properly centered in his sextant. He pulled it away from his face in order to fuss over the clamp before putting it back to his eye.
He'd pinch her again. She'd deserve it.
Mo clicked the clamp and slowly adjusted it until Polaris once again lined up with the horizon. It was obvious he was standing too close to Alice if he was getting a number close to hers, since they were supposed to be all impacted by the Unplottable-ness. He took a step away from her and adjusted again. Quote:
Latitude = 90 degrees - sextant angle
Latitude = 90 - 40
Latitude = 50
"Close. Ish. I got 50 degrees," Mo paused in scribbling down the numbers to give Alice a glance before he returned to writing it down. "While we're up here, why don't we try the owlery?"

Hogwarts RPG Name: Sarah Edwards x8
| Astro lesson 3 1a Gryffinclaw-Ravendor • The REAL Hermione Granger
The first place Sarah could think of that had good views that was good for this kkind of things was the observatory. A pretty obvious choice yet it was a different place after all. She saw that other students had the same idea. So she was not the only one that was taking a shortcut. Good. And also the were reputable students like Mo there, even though she tried to avoid him as much as she could due to her crush mode. She just liked clever guys. Mo was clever and seemed nice... STOP. She had to keep herself busy. So now- where was polaris?
She leaned out. Thankfully it was easy to spot at night. Look...look..look. Wait, was the the three sisters? Good.. now she needed to find their neighbour Mr. Polaris who had white hair. Stop thinking about other things... oh there polaris was! Great
