Out in the grounds and closely by the forest lied a wall of canopy leaves with one opening for you to walk in to the slightly dark path. As soon as you step inside and walk a few steps, a wooden plank would face you with the following carvings:
OOC Instructions: - You need to post at least once in this thread in order to be allowed to play here.
- You need to be a Hufflepuff to post here.
- You can RP your character thinking about the puzzle with their housemates, then carving the rune they think is the answer to the puzzle using the Intaglio spell, like they learned in class.
- A new puzzle will be posted by me every 10-12 hrs, provided that the previous puzzle was answered to and someone RPed carving the answer on the wood block.
- You don't have to wait for me to tell you if it was the correct answer or not, the block will move aside as soon as you carve any rune.
- The puzzles contain keywords that would lead you to the correct answer, so stay vigilant. Use the textbook thread to help you.
- You need at least 5 posts in this thread to be considered for full credit for this activity.
- You're all working as a team, give the others a chance to participate. Teamwork counts.
- The activity will be over in 72 hrs.
- Any questions/concerns/complaints, you can reach me through PM/IM/Twitter.

Erm...not really. Runes really was her weak point when it came to subjects. All the letters and alphabets it was just too confusing for her especially with each one having a special meaning. The English alphabet wasn't like that...so why the Futhark or whatever the alphabet was called had to be so difficult was beyond Nessie's understanding.

Trying was important though and even with her yawning every few minutes she wanted to put in even a little bit of contribution, but before she could do that she needed to figure what they actually needed to do because sleeping in class meant she had lost out on all the instructions. By the second riddle she sort of had an idea as to what they were doing and so she attempted to put input.

Sowilo? Fehu? Uruz? Blink. Blink.

She looked at the others with a pout not entirely sure which one was right. A guess then? "Um..." Pout. YAWN. Pout. "Maybe Sowilo then? Or...I donno. Maybe like Oakey said? Fehu? " She looked at Oakey. Didn't he do real well with Runes because honestly this was FAR from being one her strengths. They needed someone good at this because she was just an EXHAUSTED red head mumbling about things she didn't even know about.

As for the carving Ness wasn't even sure how. So not her then? Anyone else?

Oakey waited til everyone else gave their thoughts on the issue. It seemed they were all leaning towards Sowillo. But what about his AMAZING explanation of why he believed it to be Fehu.

He paused to think on it for a moment, and his eyes instantly glared at the Unicorn! Some how in that brief moment of thought Oakey concluded that the Unicorn was really just Loki in disguise tricking him into believing the correct answer was Fehu! Loki was the Norse Trickster God after all! "Sowillo it is." Oakey blurted out as he moved past the group to the front and faced the plank. "Someone else watch the Horse for a moment...I don't trust it." He turned his head and pointed back and forth between his eyes, and the the creature with his index and middle finger extended out.

Returning his attention to the Plank Oakey extended his wand out and started to speak the incantation. "Intaglio Sowilo Sowilo Sowilo Sowilo" The Rune looked a bit like a simple Lightning Bolt. Sort of like the famous scar that was left on Harry Potter's forehead. He did this about two more times until the rune was carved into the plank.

NOOOOOOO, Oakeeeeey, it was Sowilooooooooooo.

Lottie was definitely EYEING him, and almost crossed her arms across her chest and started to top her foot on the ground, BUT DIDN'T. She just sighed, loudly. Fehu was deceiviiiiiing, couldn't he SEE? Or was he also distracted by the unicorn like Lottie had been.

Again, they weren't going to die if they got this wrong, but Lottie was entirely one hundred percent certain that it was Sowilo.

*sends Sowilo vibes to Oakey*

OH LOOK! It worked! Heh. Blaaame the unicorn! Granted, she did the opposite of what Oakey asked and paid no attention to the 'Horse', instead, she paid attention to Oakey and the spell.

Laura listened to what everyone else was saying and she agreed with them, she wasn't going to do the carving thought the people who had guest could do that right after all they had done all the guessing and that was something that everyone should remember, plus they had Oakey and Ella that could do the work so she just stood with Minnie wondering how long this maze would last because she hated them.

Kace finally made it to the maze. He saw his other puffs figuring out the second riddle. Oh man he missed the first riddle, this is what he gets after trying to do his homework in the common room. But he wanted to try the maze of ancient runes that is for sure.

As he made his way through the maze, he noticed the group trying to figure out the second riddle. As he read it, he knew the rune meant Sowlio. It meant health and positive changes like Ella said. As he saw Oakey carving the rune in, he noticed the Unicorn.

Umm...what was a unicorn doing there?

It was starting to scare him. He agreed with Oakey, he did not trust it at all. Kace kept trying to avoid eye contact so it wouldn't run towards the group. He wasn't too good at riddles but he trusted his group. He was only a first year, he did not so much as a seventh year.

Ella smiled as Oakey did the spell and continued on when it was time, eager to get to the next riddle. She was really enjoying this, y'know. It was a good way to review the runes. Plus it was fun and she got to spend time with her friends. That was definitely a plus.

And...RIDDLE.

"Hmmm..." This could be a couple different runes but..."It sounds a bit like war, yeah? When one wins a war, they are made stronger in some way." Nodnod. Like acquiring new territory or freedom. "I really think it's Nauthiz. That rune has lots to do with conflict and becoming stronger for it."

That was ALL Lottie thought about when the next riddle came up to them. 'That which does not destroy me makes me stronger'. HUH. Interesting, isn't it? Very interesting, and so full of wisdom. Of course, this was Ancient Runes, there was wisdom everywhere.

And a unicorn.

This was by far the most difficult of the riddles, though. And she was inclined to say Uruz, but...then Ella said Naudhiz/Nauthiz and...yeah, she could see that. The means to an end, sort of thing. She liked it. "I agree with Ella," people were welcome to disagree, though.

"Though, perhaps not war, but definitely conflict." TRUE.

WHAT.

Alec had sort of reached that confused stage within the hunt where he was just... confused. Yep. And he was more or less going along with what the others had been saying because the boy had no clue whatsoever. He was taking it all in though and just... thinking. Thinking about things like which rune came after the next in the alphabet and what they more or less represented and how jealous Tag would be when he hears about the unicorn sighting!

But... then again... hadn't he petted a unicorn before?

Shaking his head, the sixteen year old focused his attention on the new riddle that had just popped up. What doesn't destroy you makes you stronger... OH. Ells had an idea! And Lottie agreed! How did people just... know things? "Yeah! Yeah, it could be..." Nodnod. "But... there are quite a few runes that talk about hardships and... when they come up, can't they all talk about facing a hardship and overcoming this hardship?"

... Maybe he should just keep quiet instead.

This maze activity was getting fun. It was hard work but it was a great way to review the runes especially for a firstie like Kace was. He loved this activity, this is how he learned efficiently.

Kace was following the group of older puffs. He was trying to get some good tips and ideas. Once they were walking for a bit longer, they came across another riddle. Kace read the riddle. "That which does not destroy me makes me stronger" He wondered about pain. Is there a rune just involving pain.

He agreed with Ella and the other puffs answer he did not know yet. Then he heard Alec's answer and he agreed with it. "I agree with Alec's answer. Is there a rune for hardship? I would look it up for i do not have my textbook." he grinned.

Then he braved it up and offered his curiosity."I was gonna ask, is there a rune just for pain or anything along those lines?" he asked the group of nice puffs.

Hopefully they wouldn't think his question was stupid.

Oh okay so Oakey was doing the spell. Well no big deal at least someone was. She hoped they were right since some hadn't agreed right away. As she kept the eye on the unicorn and the rest of the students she wondered if the professor didn't get Oakey's patronus, maybe he wasn't as good at it as he thought, but then again the creature didn't seem to be anymore upset, so maybe it would just stay with them through the maze.

Watching as another riddle posted Minerva listened to the others talk, "I agree with Alec there are a few that mean hardship or overcoming something. There is Isa, Hagalaz, and Nauthiz that I can think of on the top of my head." She looked back at the riddle again, "But I am leaning towards what Ella said, because out of all of them Nauthiz means delays, resistance leading to strength, which unlike the other hardship ones, means that good will come out in the end."

She hoped she was remembering them correctly and that the group would agree.

Jory followed the others until they came across the next riddle. As he pondered on the answer, he heard the others start their discussion, trying to decide on the answer. I was sort of hard. They couldn't use their texts and it was not like they were able to remember every single rune's meaning.

"I would go with Nauthiz,'' he said finally. "It represents endurance and survival, so...'' He trailed off. He would stick with Nauthiz

His ears and tail continued to twitch... and he hesitantly followed the yellow-robed students from a distance. They seemed nice, so far, but he kept looking back towards the dark forest from where he came.

Okay, so far, Ella+Lottie+Jory=Nauthiz/Naudhiz. Excellent! The others (and we might add that the first year seemed adorable) agreed that many other runes could work for this riddle.

True. And they could disagree.

"I still agree with Ella," DEFINITELY. One hundred percent certain. Unless Oakey enlightened them with his awesome Ancient Runes powers. Or patronus. Really, though, she still believed that the path will be cleared by Nauthiz/Naudhiz.

SPEAKING OF...

...unicorns.

It was following them? "I find that comforting, actually. I'd be worried if it was running in the opposite direction of us." Like, was it even running away from something? It still seemed pretty agitated to her. "Something's bothering it, though. Or bothered, past tense." Mags acted extra hyper when something bothered her. BUT...was there truly something they could do? About the unicorn? Oakey already sent the patronus. All they had were red sparks.

Tucker wasn't really focusing on this homework at all - he was more focused on the unicorn. THAT was far more interesting than riddles! As they worked, he watched the unicorn follow him and nodded when Lotus said something was bothering it.

"It does seem tense - but maybe it's just because we're here, intruding on it's territory," he suggested with a shrug. What else could it possibly be nervous about. He turned to the riddle and jumped back into the conversation, wanting to contribute SOMETHING!

"I agree, definitely Nauthiz. There's nothing else that I think represents the riddle better than survival," he explained.

Oakey a careful eye on the Unicorn as the creature continued to follow it. "Ella an Lottie have the right idea." He said not turning to speak to the group.

This Lokicorn was not going to confuse him any longer. Yup it was totally the Unicorns fault for his wrong train of thought and not his own.
He watched it continue to look back, but figured it was just the horse keeping track of where it was going cause it was lost in the maze just as much as they were. "How does it look Bothered? Just wait for Botros to come, give the guy a few minutes." Again the guy was old and needed us a cane. Oakey sent up the sparks and his Patronus. He will come.

"It's territory is in the Forbidden Forrest. We're only just on the edge. They don't normally come out." He informed the younger Hufflepuff, Tucker. The last time the Creatures of the Forrest came out, it was because of something was scaring them.

Minerva listened to her fellow badgers, it seemed that they were all in agreement, which was a good thing. So it was going to be Nauthiz, that worked for her. “Now if you don’t mind, I’m going to do this one.” Minerva pulled her wand and started heading toward the plank.

But there was a problem the unicorn had made its way between the plank and the students. What was this Unicorn still doing here. “Oakey do you think your patronus got to Professor Botros?” Maybe it didn’t get very far or even lost? Minerva wasn’t sure, but knew no one was here to help them yet. Getting distracted by the beauty of the creature, she just really really wanted to pet it, but no that was not a good idea, it was a wild creature. So she just stared. Minerva watched it class to the forest, “Don’t think it’s trying to tell us something, do you? Maybe Firth needs to be aware that it’s on the grounds.” Just a thought at least.

Okay back to what she was supposed to do, carefully Minerva stepped past the Unicorn making sure to keep some distance. Now looking at the plank she pulled her wand up and really concentrating on the meaning of the word and the spell she began. “Intaglio Nauthiz.. Nauthiz.. Nauthiz” Watching the rune carve into the wood Minerva smiled and stepped again around the Unicorn to her group. “Thanks for letting me do that one.”

Wait, what did you say Tucker? This is NOT their territory. Just as Lottie was about to tell him so, Oakey spoke up, so all she could do was nod his way. He was right, though, she'd seen one in the forest last term when she went in with Lex. Lex saw it, too. And she also saw the thestral...that Lottie couldn't see.

Anyway...., "Why would it be here, though, if this is not their territory?" she finally decided to voice that question as she watched Minerva perform the spell on the wood plank. Good job, by the way!

Survival.

"Do you think it ran away from something?" That was THE only explanation possible. Something or someone was drawing it out. To them. Huh. She should've kept the forest in mind when she made that bet with Lex.

Well, it looked like things were being taken care of. Though Wade kept his eye on that Unicorn. It was pretty after all, despite how scared it looked. Were they allowed to at least comfort it? Hmm.. Oh right, that riddle again. Wade didn't have a clue on that one, skimming through his notes earlier didn't give him much hints. Hopefully, the next one will jog his memory better.

"Nice one." Wade gave Minnie a thumbs up after she engraved this one. Now, back to the Unicorn. He frowned a little. "Poor thing looks so scared," Oakey had the right idea though. "Let's let it stick around until Professor Botros gets here then." Now what could be in that forest that drove it out..

Laura so wanted to pet the Unicorn to show it that it was okay and no one was going to hurt it but she knew it wouldn't like that probably so instead she send the unicorn a nice smile to show it that no one was there to hurt it and that it was safe with them, Laura would make sure of that, "I agree with what everyone else is saying." Laura was going to let Ella do what she was doing she was making sure the Unicorn knew that it was safe.

Five minutes. Five minutes it took him to climb down the guard chair where he'd sat eating a snack and watching the students roam around the mazes, from above. Only he forgot to get rid of the bracelets when the Patronus reached him and he had to ACTUALLY guess which path they went through. He tried taking off the bracelets after a while but they wouldn't come off. He should've made a bigger ones for him instead of wearing the kiddie sized ones. Hmph. Sherman was going to love this story.

CRUNCH!STEP!CRUNCH!STEP!

Oh. Hmm. Botros leaned on his cane and took a few steps closer to the Unicorn. "There's a unicorn in my maze." And not a very young one so the boys and him should probably stay further away from it. As for the beautiful creature. Ab took a slow step closer to it. Then another one. Did he look slightly upset or.. irritated to everyone else or was it just the old man's perspective? "There there, nothing to worry about." He should send for Ali. Or professor Barlow since she was a woman.

Uhhh..right...she was loosing what they were talking about again and she was yawning too more and more. Watching them she decided to let them do what they needed, her input wouldn't have been much help anyways. They seemed to know what they were doing anyways and Ness was ready to space out on them completely till she heard someone saying something about a unicorn.

Was she really that blind? Had it been there all along?

The red head watched with fascination. Interesting. And Beautiful...but frightened. Pout. Yawn. Pout. "Beautiful." She then mumbled. "It keeps looking back at the forest. You think it's trying to tell us something is out there? " Cause you know that's how her dogs at home used to ask her to follow them. They used to look at her then look in the direction they wanted her to go. NOT a single chance she was taking a step in that forest though, not unless she had to.

Mellow. Professor Botros. Yeah. She just watched him, but he was right. Probably nothing to worry about. Although he did know they were capable of hurting him right? Because he seemed to be walking closer towards it.

At the end of the maze's path, after a fork and a left turn is the last of the puzzles that would take you outside.

See there he was! It just took him like 10 minutes extra from when Oakey last sent his Patronus. He should start a record of how long it would take Botros to respond to calls. Maybe he'll break his record,~~and hip~~ next time.

"Sir I sent the..." Nope, never mind it seemed that Botros was already caught up just from looking at the Unicorn. It was normal for Unicorns to be out of the Forrest like this. "Professor, I don't think that's normal. Renesmee is right as well as what everyone else has been pointing out. The Unicorn looks scared."

but Botros told them to continue on. They were one away from getting out of the maze. "I can come back with Professor Barlow once we finish if you'd like."

looking forward at the Puzzle Oakey just smirked. "It's Gebo. Hands done, look where it even says gift in the riddle." Gebo was translated to 'Gift' after all.
