Stepping into the arena, you are immediately enveloped with the light shining into the room, either morning or evening depending on what time you decide to enter. Perhaps the intricately designed windows and ceiling could detour your eyes away from the dusty and cob web infested areas of the more higher portions of the arena. To the very right of the room, there is the long platform in which supervised duels will take place while four benches on either side are placed at a safe distance for those who would like to sit and watch. Just ahead of the platform in the right corner, there is a door, though pay no attention to it. It's locked for a reason.

Towards the back wall, there are various types of practice dummies, both stationary and moving, depending on what difficulty the practicer wants. Don't be afraid to go all out with your spells, for these dummies are charmed to repair themselves. There is one practice dummy set aside that will shoot spells back to the practicer, however, permission from a Professor is required to use it. To the left side of the arena are two sets of stands, eight seats high, that look out to the entire arena, comfortable for those who would just like to watch what's going on all around or for general purposes such as studying or relaxing after a long day in the arena.

The middle of the room is quite empty, due to the fact that the defense Professor enjoys presenting lessons in here, but please, despite the brilliant light that shines through the arena due to the large windows, it is not some place to sunbathe or fall asleep. You will be levitated out with a good dose of cold water splashed on you if caught.

Every time somebody agreed with his ideas or statements or told him he'd done a good job or otherwise complimented him, Tobias always felt a weird surge of pride. He liked doing good.

"That'd be awesome, yeah!" Toby responded enthusiastically. An offer to practice flying together. That was friendship, Tobias decided. New friend. Aw yis.

He kept his eyes trained on the dummy. Practice, y'know? He'd just a moment ago thought about distractions as a duelling technique sooooooo...

Toby kept his wand raised and stared at the dummy. Right at its head. He kept staring and staring and imagining the head bursting into flames without using magic. Like how he used to do after he'd watched that movie Matilda one too many times. It was odd, when he'd accidentally set fire to things in his old school, it didn't seem to take that much effort. Maybe because he was having to use a wand this time and channel the magic energy. Also, apparently when wizards were younger, they tended to have strong but short bursts of energy, whereas Tobias had subconsciously been trained out of that and into a kind of magic stamina, what with all these classes. But he was losing focus again.

Right. Stare stare stare. Right at its face. Imagine the fire RIGHT THERE. He picture flames in vivid detail, even the heat. "Incendio," Toby cast, but it wasn't really with much conviction and he felt his voice falter even as he said it. Nevertheless, he KNEW he saw something this time. A flicker of flame over at the dummy. Not where he'd been aiming but ON THE DUMMY. Toby grinned widely. The flame was gone in seconds, but he KNEW now that he could do it.

As he shifted his feet and got ready to super!focus again, Tobias noticed the ball Mo was using roll away towards some other kids, and he tried to stifle a tiny giggle. He was impressed, anyway. Because SHIELD charms!

Mo let the ball go for the moment as he watched Toby playing with fire. Literally playing with fire. It was a cool spell, especially for a younger student to play with so handily, but once Mo was sure the boy knew exactly what he was about, he turned his attention back to his own practice. Or no, really, once he was done watching the fire, he turned his attention back to his own work.

Dylan entered the Dueling arena...Immediately setting his stuff down and pulling off his outer robe. After tossing it over his bag, he went about rolling up the sleeves of his white oxford uniform shirt. He had a purpose today, you see? He needed to practice spellwork...and really, Dylan didn't know what to practice just yet...So, it was going with safe options...The harder stuff would be in weeks to come.

Making his way over to the practice dummies, he smirked at them. "Hello, you lot." Were they really do get STUNNED...Were they?! Because the Slytherin Captain definitely needed to practice that one...and disarming a little...maybe.

Would the dummies animate so he could know if his spell worked?

Assuming he could animate them if they weren't, Dylan aimed his wand at a couple of them that were stood side by side..."Piertotum Locomotor!" He held his wand aloafly...pointing at each in turn and repeating the spell. Could he make them attack him...So, he could get some REAL training....

Hehehehe.

"Dummies....ATTACK me..." This wasn't damaging school property. Didn't they fix themselves and go right back to being all non-broke and normal? Dylan was almost positive he'd heard that somewhere...Anyway...

As one advanced on him, the Slytherin readied his wand focusing his magic and getting his intent in order. He knew what he wanted to do...He wanted to cast stupefy and knock the dummies down...So, he focused REALLY hard...SO HARD...Could they SEE the concentration and FOCUS on his man!pretty face?

Breeeeeeeeeeeathing...

"STUPEFY!" A jet of red light burst from his wand tip, connecting with the dummy furthest to the right...Bam. YOU GOING DOWN....Not wanting to wast is momentum, he took aim again as the other two dummies closed in...."Stupefy!" Again, there was another jet of red light surging forth....

Tobias really really really really really had to make himself focus on his own practice now. He couldn't help but still be in awe of all this magic. Because seriously, how could anyone get over learning that magic was a THING.

He did the focusing thing. Closed his eyes and all which... probably wasn't the best idea given that they were in a duelling arena and things and spells were flying around. But still. Right. Flames, hot, orange and red and yellow and a bit of white and sparks and a lot hotter than you expect, every time, and whooshing and YEAH.

Snapping his eyes open, Tobias stared at the dummy and transposed the picture of the flames he'd been imagining onto the image of the dummy right in front of him and in his mind it was on fire. Now just to make it happen.

"InCENdi-OH!" That last part was more of a exclamation of surprise more than anything, because from nearby he heard a suddenly THWACK. Toby's gaze was drawn over to the source of the sound just in time to see the ball fly off and he stood slightly open mouthed for a moment. "Holy wow, YEAH." He DID. Kinda. Well... he mostly heard it but STILL. "That was-"

But he didn't really have time to say WHAT it was, because Tobias had, out of habit, glanced back at the dummy again and it... was definitely on fire. The very middle of it, rather than the head, so his aim was off. But the spell had worked. Like PROPERLY. That was what he'd WANTED it to do... minus the exact location of course, but STILL. His grin widened.

Then he turned to Mo and gave him a BIG THUMBS UP. Because they'd BOTH been awesome.

Still doing his little dance, he took his hands off his antlers to draw his wand, which only made his head sway more...and then backwards. And though Aidan started a funny backwards run to get his head underneath his antlers again, he wasn't fast enough and fell on his bum.

At least it was easier to hold his head up like this. "Okay. Ready," he smiled, holding his wand at the ready, pointing at Dora. He wasn't going to let this hold him back.

"Accio ball." Mo called the rubber ball back to himself again, snatching it out of the air as it zoomed back from under the bleachers. It was wicked, what he'd just done... not because he was particularly skilled, but because magic and cleverness had combined into a pretty nifty trick. And he was just going to go ahead and do it again right now...

After putting out the fire that Toby had set. "That's a good one," Mo admired he fire with a nod and a whistle, even as he slid around closer to see just exactly what was on fire. Yeah, just the whole dummy. "Really excellent, actually. D'you mind if I just...? Aguamenti." Mo put out the fire with a stream of water from his wand before turning back to Toby and offering a fistbump.

"Toby the PyroPuff. My hero, mate. Remind me to wear clothes I don't like next time we duel."

Now... one last run with the ball, since Mo had already managed to block it with his shield. He wanted to try ONE MORE THING before he had to run off to work on other homework assignments. What if he cast an Impediment Charm instead of the Shield Charm? What would happen to the ball? Mo glanced at Toby, just to see how he was holding up before resuming his stance and throwing that ball. HARD.

"Impedimenta," Mo cast the spell at the ball that was zipping back toward them. It seemed to freeze there in the air in front of him. Or not freeze, really, since it was still moving very slowly toward him, rolling over and over through the air like it was stuck in a pot of cold honey. Awesome.

"Finite," Mo murmured, reaching out his hand and capturing the ball from the air just as the spell ended. Wow. Just... talk about fun parlor tricks. The real trick would be using these spells as quickly on a real person as on an inanimate ball flying through the air.

"Nice to meet you, Toby. I'll see you next time, okay?" Mo offered a hand to the boy before heading for the door.

Ready. Extra ready. Pumped, bouncing, sleeves-rolled-up ready. That was how ready Alice was for spellwork practice. As soon as she entered the Arena, her things were pushed aside and her wand was out. Except.. she was at a total loss for which spells to use on a dummy. And was she gonna use a moving or stationary one? Offensive or defensive? Jinx or Hex? Curse or Charm? Did she even have to cast a spell, or could she just punch the dummy?

.. a bit off track, here, but the spirit was there nevertheless.

The first spell that came to mind was the Inflatus jinx, so Alice decided it was the one she'd try. Since she'd never done it before, it seemed like the best option to try it on a stationary dummy, so she chose one of those before trying to remember the movement. On second though, she and Dylan were scheduled to try the dueling challenge next week, weren't they?

And she didn't know how to cast that shield yet..

It was settled, then, that was what she'd do. An upwards zig zag motion, wasn't it? She had the vague memory of learning it before. "Contego dummy!" Next, to cast the jinx and see if her shield had worked. Only.. what was the movement again?

As he finished off the last of the dummies...Dylan stood at ease and then muttered "Finite" in turn for each of them...As they stood, once again lifeless, looking at him with their blank expressions, the Slytherin blinked...No, really...Their expressions were blank. There was nothing there....

Creeptastic.

Then he decided to go ahead and try to work 'Flipendo' in the dummies...He and Alice were meeting up next week for that dueling challenge stuff so...He needed to make sure he had that down pat so as not to embarrass himself in front of a fellow Captain. That was NOT acceptable.

The dummies didn't need to be animated for him to successfully test this spell either...SO, they could just stay as they were.

Dylan stood before a line of them...centering his magic...and even doing one of those yoga stances that Professor Romanos had taught them...The Tree...or something like that. He stood completely still, bringing his foot to rest beside his shin and then the same with his hands, bringing them together like they were in prayer.

Huuuuuuuuuuuum. Huuuuuuuuuuuum. Huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuum.

Once he felt good and centered...which took several moments, he got back to the task at hand. Flipendo. It was a First Year jinx. At least, it was one Dylan had learned in his first year...So, he assumed it had been the same with the Hogwarts students...The motion was an interesting one....but not at all hard.

SO, in other words, he was ready to BEAST these bad boys...

Taking a deep, steadying breath...he focused on each one in turn before letting the magic FLOOOOOOOOOOOOW...

"Flipendo." for the first one who'd been knocked back...Simple enough....."Flipendo!" for the second one...who'd just been chilling...He'd landed sideways. "FLIPENDO!" for the third one...who'd just been knocked back all ordinary like...

She could have sworn she studied this jinx in the library... what was it? Was it some kind of counterclockwise circle-swish-point-flick-clockwise circle- check mark-flourish-point-swish movement things, those overly complicated ones always slipped Alice's mind. Or maybe it was just really, really simple, which was why she was forgetting it. Could that have been it? Just a little point of her wand would do the trick?

Okay. At least she'd try.

"Inflatus!" Point. As soon as she'd said the incantation, a jet of blue light shot towards the dummy, but it never got hit. Her shield must have worked, because the jet of light came jumping back at her, and Alice had to duck to avoid getting the bulk of the jinx. She really didn't need to explode into party balloons, okay?

Maybe she'd try this again..

.. but shield first. 'Course. Shield first.

With Flipendo out of the way....Dylan just kinda stood and observed the room...trying to figure out what spells to do next. He could disarm the dummies...That could be a thing...

They didn't have wands, though.

He could do...some more stupefy...Dylan thoroughly enjoyed that spell and practice for it never went amiss.

Deciding to just do that...He reanimated the dummies as he did before..."Piertotum Locomotor!" Once several of the dummies sprang to life, the Slyitherin smirked...."Dummies, I am your FATHARH!" A Star Wars reference could be strategically placed anywhere...."Attack me again..."

Then he settled back and waited...Preparing to strike!

Deciding to cast a new shield and try the jinx once more on that, Alice got rid of the current one with a Finite and began to perform the incantation for a second time. "Contego dummy!" She traced her wand in the same distinct upward zig zag motion as she had before, hoping that this shield was just as successful as the first. And if not.. well. Dummy was going to explode into colorful party balloons, would Romanos mind?

"Inflatus!" She pointed again, and the jet of blue light went flying towards the stationary dummy. Rebounding off her shield again, it came toward Alice next, but she ducked just in time and avoided the spell again. Brilliant. Did that mean she was good for the shield now and didn't need to practice it anymore? She wanted it to be perfected for when she and Dylan did their challenge.

After all, she definitely didn't want to do a spell wrong in front of him, and definitely wasn't going to.

.. maybe one more shield try, then?

As the practice dummies started surrounding him, Dylan just smirked. This was fun to him...REAL fun...They were having a party now. AWWYEAH...The Slytherin took a few steps back...thinking fast about what spells to perform first.

Oh, he knew.

"Petrificus Totalus!" He whipped his wand, going through the motions with ease. It was like the number five on it's side...Funny movement...Aimed at one of the dummies, it planked, landing backwards, The others kept coming, though...

"Flipendo!"

"Stupefy!"

One after the other...he laid out spells, doing the best he could to ward off the attacking practice dummies...He'd ordered them to do so, of course...and he was sure they couldn't do him any really danger...

He did know Reducto...

"Diffindo!" Slash!

"Finite." Last time she was going to try it. Carefully extending her wand again, Alice traced the upward zig zag motion with her hand, making sure she had it perfected before saying the incantation. "Contego dummy." Was there any way to tell if a shield was working without casting a spell on it? She examining the area in front of the dummy analytically, trying to see if there was. Some kind of shimmer? A ripple? A blur?

If there was a way, she sure couldn't tell.

The jinx was getting easier by the try, though, and she was a bit more relaxed when she performed that one than the shield. "Inflatus!" The jet of blue light shot towards the dummy again and rebounded for a third time. Alice jumped out of the way once more, beaming at her progress and casting the last Finite on her dummy.

Just the jinx now?

It might have been practice, but Dylan was having the time of his life...This was his type of setting, as he continued to guard off the three different practice dummies...They didn't do much other than just creeping on him...but it was okay. Gave him some time to do all the practice.

"Immobulus!"...

Naturally, he had to keep 'Finite'ing his spells so that they could continue on...like when he stunned and froze them...And after doing that, he always had to recast the 'animating' spell Bellaire had taught them...That was totally fine, too...

When Dylan had started to considering vanishing the dummies, he knew it was time to pack up for the day and head out. That's the kind of thing that always seemed to happen to him. He spent too much time in one place and started to get crazy ideas in his head....

Meh.

"Finite."

After cleaning up after himself, the Slytherin grabbed his bag and robe, casually slipping the first one...and then the latter as he exited the room.

Confident that her shields were fairly strong, Alice began working on the jinx by itself. A point and the incantation, and on a stationary dummy too. It was only just not occurring to her how easy of a task she'd set for herself, but that was okay. Easy was most definitely okay. It was only week one of this assignment, yeah? She'd have plenty of time later to improve on the difficulty level of her spellwork, right now she'd just focus on doing it right, yeah?

So she did just that and tried her best to FOCUS on the Inflatus Jinx. FOCUSing. Did people SEE this CONCENTRATION? "Inflatus!" Without a shield to stop it this try, the jet of blue light from Alice's wand shot uninterrupted at the dummy, hitting it square in the chest with her jinx. It slowly started to inflate, expanding to its utmost capacity before exploding into colorful party balloons.

Well. Would Romanos mind that Alice had completely destroyed one of her dummies? Eyeing it warily, the fifth year took a peek around to make sure no one was watching before carefully sneaking out of the arena. That wasn't her doing, okay? It wasn't. Really.

Dylan reentered the dueling arena with an extra bounce in his step. Today was a great day...He and Alice were going to work on shield charms...and he was more excited about actually performing the shields. He had so much fun with them with Romanos had taught them in class...and if he knew Alice...She was similar to Selina Skylar when it came to those types of lessons....and that meant she most likely didn't remember them....WHICH MEANT...that he needed to reteach her for next term. Hogwarts was a dangerous place now...Dylan wouldn't have felt settled leaving her here without knowing things....

Ahem.

Anyway, to prepare he discarded his bag and outer robe, rolling the sleeves of his uniform!shirt up...Alice would be joining him any minute...and it was because of that that he went ahead and turned his wand on himself...focusing and concentrating on protection and basically wrapping his body in a glove..."Impiriano." Maneuvering his wand in the tight circular motion before doing a flick there at the end...

He could feel the layer of magic settle over his skin and grinned. He'd been working on that one the most. It was clearly his favorite...

Now, he would wait...

Anyone who knew Alice also knew that she and Selina Skylar shared more than just a couple similarities. Which meant she most definitely didn't remember a single one of those spells she'd learned, also the reason she and Dylan were practicing them today.

She arrived at the arena just in time to see the Slytherin cast something on himself. Hmm? What was he doing? Alice had heard him say the spell, though, so without waiting for instruction of any sort, she immediately mimicked him, pointing her wand at her own skin and maneuvering her wand in the same motion. A tight circular one with a flick at the end, wasn't it? And what had he said to accompany that movement? "Impiriano!" Her skin felt.. weird. Like there was something on it. Had she even cast that spell before?

"Hi. What does that spell do?"

Because.. she didn't know. She just felt the need to perform it on herself anyway. Impulsive, you know, Gryffindor.

She'd caught Dylan off guard when she'd suddenly popped up behind him, asking questions. Always asking questions. Something else she had greatly in common with his best mate.

"Well...how about a demonstration?"

Dylan backed up a few steps and held his arms out, almost surrendering to whatever spell or magic she'd want to perform here in a moment. "Toss whatever spell you want to at me." Legit...She totally could and Dylan would not get mad. Not even a little bit. He had total faith in this charm.

So, go on, Fischer...

A demonstration? Hm. Alice went with something quick and easy, something that she already knew how to cast well that didn't require much effort, like the Tickling Charm. It was definitely one of her favorites, especially the movement which kinda looked like a feather, didn't it? In her opinion, it did. She traced her wand in the same sloping shape, then curved back under it and made kind of a swirl in the middle.

"Rictusempra." The silver light shot out of the tip of her wand and went straight for Dylan. She had no doubt that her spell hadn't worked this time. So.. was he going to laugh?

He should have been. Right about.. now.

.. Alice was waiting.

Dylan heard the spell she'd shot off...but just smirked as it hit his 'shield'. He felt the disruption in it...and knew that it could only withstand so much abuse from on-coming spells...but he'd done this for a reason, obviously. Everything always for a reason. The Slytherin way.

"The spell I performed on myself was my favorite shield charm that I've learned to date." He was grinning...Yep. He LOVED it, okay. "Impiriano is the shield that acts like a very protective second-skin." Dylan gave her eyes. "IF you've went ahead and cast this particular charm on yourself, you should be feeling a layer of something unseen settled over your skin..." Hey, Alice was a Gryffindor. He put nothing past her...

"Unfortunately...it doesn't withstand everything, though...So, you'd probably have to recast it...if you used it in a duel...Magical damage weakens it..." Nod, nod. "So, did you cast it on yourself....?"

He went ahead and flicked something at her...A rather harmless spell that would've knocked her on her butt.

Flipendo, of course.

He'd know in a moment if she'd cast the shield on herself...

He wasn't giggling. Why wasn't he giggling?

The fact that he couldn't feel her spell was bothersome to her, and Alice was slightly irritated that he hadn't burst into a fit of laughter before Dylan explained it was a shield. There was definitely something on her skin.. it made her feel rather uncomfortable, but maybe he was just used to it? If she starting making use of the spell more, maybe, but the fifth year doubted that she would. It felt weird, okay?

.. was he shooting spells at her? "I cast it on myself already." It felt like there'd been some sort of disruption in the magic, like the shield had faltered for a second, but nothing had happened to her. So it had probably done it's job then, yeah?

"Are there other shields? I already know Contego, we practiced that one already this week." And Protego, obviously, but everyone knew the basics like that. "Are there any others? Are you going to show me them?" Alice's face brightened visibly as she waited for more answers. She wanted to know, she wanted to learn. Was he gonna show her yet?

Dylan nodded, confirming what he'd thought to be true. Of course she went ahead and performed it on herself without knowing what it was...."Merlin....? In the future...don't perform something on yourself unless you know what it is and what it does...." He was frowning at her...FROWNING. Dylan worried about her, okay? WORRIED. Just like he worried about Selina living by herself...with Vivi of all people...

Yea.

"I only really know four shields...Protego, which is like the most basic one...Contego, which is a fun one to know...Impiriano, which is the armor shield...and then the reversion shield. Professor Romanos called it 'Glass to Sand', though."

He'd used it to freak Oakey Gunter out once...when Dylan was creepin' him in Hogsmeade..."I'm not sure how helpful it would be in a situation at Hogwarts..." The Slytherin pondered on that a moment......"It takes a lot of concentration..."

Taking a deep breath, he whipped his wand out in front of him...ALL OF HIS BRILLIANT SEVENTH YEAR FOCUS......"Revertoscutum!" and then pointed his wand out in front of him. Yep, that was all it took. A point....It looked like some water was in the shape of a wall between the two of them....

"Why not? You did it. And you wouldn't cast anything bad on yourself, so it had to be safe for me to do, too." Alice nodded seriously, finding her logic perfectly sound. If he was dumb enough to cast something harmful on his own body.. well.. he was the one that needed help then, see?

She saw. Totally did.

"I know all of tho- wait, reversion shield?" Glass to sand.. hmm.. it sounded just as familiar as Impiriano had, but Alice couldn't recall the incantation until Dylan brought it up. As soon as he'd cast the spell, she was completely enthralled by it. This one, this was her favorite, okay? It looked cool. "Can I touch it?" Without waiting for confirmation, she extended a finger and poked at the shield curiously, examining it. It almost seemed like a wall of water, with its pale blue-green color and effect like that.

"I want to cast this one," she said decidedly, cracking her knuckles. Yep. This one.

"I just have to point? And.. concentrate? And point?" Seemed easy enough, yeah?

Alice had totally POUNCED on that spell, hadn't she...? Dylan just gave her eyes as he watched her face light up like a Christmas tree. He laughed a little....TOTALLY NOT meaning to disrespect the great and powerful Alice Fischer, of course.

"Do you know the spell 'Reverto'?" If she did, cool. That'd make this easier..."'Glass to Sand' is basically a shield that reverts a magically created physical thing to his previous form....So...keep that in mind." Dylan shot a look before slipping into his focused face.

His success rate with this particular shield wasn't that high. It was either hit or miss, if Dylan would admit such a thing. Not that he would to Alice. She thought there was nothing he couldn't do most likely...and he wasn't going to shatter that illusion.

...because it was TOTALLY an illusion.

Inhale. Exhale. Breathing.....Shield....shield.....shield.....

"Revertoscutum....Re-ver-toe-skew-tum....."...if she wanted it broken down into syllables. That had always worked for Odessa when they were working on spellwork together...

"Revertoscutum!" As Dylan pointed his wand, the more greenish-than-blue shield appeared...and he strained to keep it in place....It was that success rate and such. It required serious focus...

Her face totally WAS lit up like a Christmas tree, and.. Dylan was laughing? Why was he laughing? Had that Rictusempra finally hit him?

"I know that one," she informed him, nodding eagerly. "When I cast the shield, what magically created physical thing is it changing into its previous form?" Was it even changing anything? Alice took mental notes on everything he said from there, most of her attention going to the incantation. "Can I try now? Is it my turn?" Was it? WAS it? "Re-VER-toe-SKEW-tum. Reverrrrrtoeskewwwwwtum. Revertoscutum."

With a big want point jab thing there at the end. And.. nothing was happening, was it?

Okay, CONCENTRATE, Fischer.

"Revertoscutum!" Point! And.. this time, a shield flickered into place between them. It looked more blue than green, nearly pearlescent, like the sheen of a bubble. See through, and more like a curved wall than an actual shield. Swinging her wand a little experimentally, Alice soon discovered that her shield moved with her. "Dylan! Do you see it? I can MOVE it." SO. COOL.

Could she move it on to him? CONCENTRATING.

She stared at Dylan focused really hard, and for a brief moment, her shield moved in front of him. New favorite spell? She thought so.

"I want to walk around the school and show random people my shield," Alice informed him excitedly, beaming as she gathered her things with her free hand, fighting hard to maintain the shield. "And see how long I can keep this one up without recasting, okay?" With that, she grabbed his hand and tugged him out of the Arena, shield first.
