The highly anticipated Quidditch seminar, led by all star athlete Colin Mackenzie, and well-advertised around the school, was supposed to be held today. Unfortunately, due to budget cuts and his tightly packed schedule, Mackenzie has been replaced by four of Hogwarts' more familiar speakers. All his posters have a big red CANCELED sign stamped over them, and the professors replacing Mackenzie --- Botros, James, Romanos, and Truebridge --- have a most serious expression on their faces as they stand in a line at the front of the spare room off the Great Hall.
Come in, have a seat on the floor (there are cushions around, don't complain), and get ready for an interesting.... lesson.

Ella just watched and tapped her chin and watched some more. AUROR. Yup, she'd remember that. The trouble with dangerous situations, though, is that no one really knows how they're going to act until they're in that moment. You can prepare hypothetically all you want but it didn't mean you were going to do those things when you were frightened and actually in danger.
The sixteen year old picked a letter and tried to elaborate for participation purposes. "The R part...well if you're facing a dangerous creature and you start yelling your head off you could startle it and cause it to attack. Not to mention that if you're not calm, it'd be hard to think of your best options for safety. The calm part is extremely important."
Nigel was happy the buzzers disappeared. These questions were ridiculous. Some where so obvious you would have thought Professor wrote them. Which they did. But it seemed that they were not done yet.
Nigel watched as Truebridge displayed something on the board. Nigel read it and thought about it for a couple seconds. Nigel did not really want to explain every line in detail. So a summary would do. This was only a put together seminar because one quidditch player did not show up.
"It means don't be "brave" "
Yes Nigel did just use air quotes when saying brave. Air quotes were "fun".

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Jory pondered over the acronym. Hmmmm. "It means simply to be calm and collected under the pressure of any situation and try to make the right decisions so as to reduce chaos and harm that may come to anyone,'' he said. That sounded a lot simpler than it actually was as the first thing most persons did was to panic and go screaming their heads off.
One more. Probably. It would be painless. They could get through it. There was a light at the end of the tunnel.
As another one of those you know the right answer here, be good questions, James stated with a tone of finality, "I can help make Hogwarts a safe and happy home for everyone." Green button to agree, red button to disagree.
Kace knew this one hands down. He chuckled at the question. He pressed down the GREEN button. He was the first year and so far everyone was making Hogwarts feel safe and a happy home for him so far.

Strategies such as NOT screaming, listening to your prefects, and trusting in your professors AND YOUR HEADMISTRESS to keep your best interests at heart."
She forced a tense smile onto her face. "Now then, children, let's talk about making Hogwarts a safer place together. When you are in a scary or dangerous situation, what should you do? We've just gone over some scenarios that will hopefully help you better analyze the situation and what to do when, but here's a helpful acronym for you to learn and apply."
The redhead pointed her wand at the board which had been hanging empty at the front of the room all lesson. Tidy blue block letters appeared on it, spelling out:
A lert the authorities U se teamwork R emain calm O nly use magic IF NECESSARY R emember where the exits are!
"Obviously it spells out AUROR, who are some of the best people around trained in combat and DEFENSIVE magic." She made certain to emphasize the word defensive here, especially for the 'courageous' Gryffindors in the room.
"Who can elaborate on this acronym and explain what each line really means? Put it into the context of how to handle.... say, some sort of magical creature getting loose from class, if you'd like." Just as an example.
So this seminar was a safety lecture? Could this be anymore cliche? He already heard about safety from his parents. Now he was gonna hear it from wizards? This should be interesting and probably be a bit boring. I mean no offense but when have safety lectures ever been fun.
Then he saw the acronym that spelt AUROR? He wondered what they were. He never heard of them. Apparently they helped bring out the safety in the wizarding world. Then he heard the professor ask for explanations for each line. As he was about to answer, he heard Ella's and Jory's explanations. They seemed pretty legit.
"Yeah what Ella and Jory said. They basically summed up what i was gonna say." Kace shrugged. Why bother repeating what they were saying.

Oh awesome, no more buzzers. That was a relief. Were they gonna do awesome fun stuff now?
...nope, didn't seem like it.
Auror? They were trained in combat and defensive magic... She'd heard of them. And it sounded...kinda like a cool job. Hmm...
But back to the thing about it they were supposed to be answering about. The one that stood out to her was the one about only using magic if necessary. She totally agreed with it. Plus, she was always more inclined to use her fists than magic. Even if THAT wasn't what that line was suggesting.
Anyway.
She raised her hand. "I dunno, I don't think it means you can't 'play the hero'." She glanced briefly over at West since he'd brought the phrase up. "You just gotta be smart about it and not stupidly just rush in and attack something like a creature. You gotta remain calm and not just start throwing spells around because that can make stuff worse, and you should help others and I guess contact someone who can help more, like authorities I guess, and know where you can go to escape and not get killed and all that. Can still be pretty heroic sometimes, even if you don't take the creature or whoever down on your own." That was how she saw it anyway. Not that she could vouch that she herself wouldn't ever impulsively run into a dangerous situation without thinking everything through...but still. That wasn't always heroic, and doing something sorta the opposite wasn't always unheroic.
But that was her two knuts on this thing. She wasn't even sure she'd answered the question, but she wasn't elaborating further.

Yes Nigel did just use air quotes when saying brave. Air quotes were "fun".
That was probably THE dumbest thing Alice had ever heard. Ever. From a Ravenclaw, too, for shame.
It was likely the fact that her hand was still aching like nuts from those buzzers that made her so sour toward the whole prospect of a safety lesson, which she clearly didn't need. Clearly. Hand up. Not to answer the Headmistress' question, just to pick at Nigel, because his answer was stupid. Even if he'd used air quotes. "Being brave doesn't mean you have to constantly risk your hide and kill something and toss all safety rules out the window."
Just saying, because people implied that about Gryffindors all the time. It wasn't like Alice's favorite way to pass time was MURDERING things.
"Being brave is being courageous, which really isn't impulsive or dumb or anything that you all are making it out to be. Just a state of mind that lets you face danger with confidence." That's what it WAS, they all needed dictionaries. "And if you're in a dangerous situation, you're probably going to need that. So being brave is a rule FOR safety. It should be in that acronym somewhere. Cowards don't do well in sticky situations."
Her hand still hurt. It had stopped smoking, though, joy.

Like... people that are showing off, or making foolish choices might be playing the hero but not acting heroic." West elaborated, hand up, after catching Loppy's look his way. Y'know. Since she had thoughts about what he'd said and all. So y'know.
"And I don't think brave and reckless are the same thing." Because he actually liked Gryffindors. Certain ones and in general y'know? So that was a West being loyal to all of that. Sometimes it was braver to be smart about something though.

"True and that is called Recklessness". Like West said. "Which is what I was talking about with the air quotes." Some people can't understand sarcasm. Shame.
He did agree with her definition for brave and what if you are a dangerous situation and nodded along to that.

That was a fair point. And sorta what she meant to say. Ish. He said it better though. Penelope nodded and raised her hand a little again to reply. "True. I guess that's usually what it means, the showing off thing." The phrase at least. Doing that didn't actually make someone a hero. Not a real hero, at least.
And she nodded at that last bit too. Definite agreement there. Bravery and recklessness weren't the same thing at all, though people definitely got them confused a lot. Even some Gryffindors. It was probably why people always assumed it about them. Seemed Alice and Nigel were on the same page about that too.

Dylan.....was just eyeing all of them...and their answers. It was interesting to see what they all had to say, of course. He agreed with some things...but thought it was more straight-forward. Central to those who thought it was their duty to get involved all the time.
Gryffindors, basically.
"I think it's pretty self-explanatory. 'Alert the authorities' meaning to alert someone who has more knowledge about any given situation than you personally do. Like in the case of a magical creature gone rampant...No student should try to handle that situation...without alerting an adult....No matter how knowledgeable they think they are." That included older kids...like himself. Seriously. They weren't Professors...They didn't need to be heroes. "'Use teamwork' obviously relates to being there for each other...and keeping each other safe..." No sacrificing the Hufflepuffs, in other words..."'Stay calm' means no screeching, screaming, yelling, shouting.....or getting worked up. That's how situations get infinity worse..." Slytherin philosophy right there. They'd master this in his house....Well, some of them.
"The last two are aimed more towards 'What ifs'. IF things start getting out of control, you might need to cast a spell that'll help you escape and get others to safety....but you should only cast what is necessary...and I think that goes with the last, too. Know your exits so that when you performs whatever magic is necessary...you can get away."
That was Dylan's opinion, anyway. He looked at he Headmistress and shrugged. No one needed to worry about him trying to be a hero. He was NOT interested.

And... there went the buzzers. BLINK. So was this seminar over now or--
Nope. Okay.
Alec tilted his head as he looked at the acronym on the board. Aurors sounded like ninjas, actually. Maybe. Didn't ninjas have to be... what was it that Truebridege had said? .... Oh yeah, trained in combat and defensive magic. Ninjas couldn't do magic, though, could they? But they were still trained in combat and... and...
He had a question to answer.
Shaking his head, the boy thought about his response for a minute or two before raising his hand in the air. "See, the thing is, magic is great and all but... it can also be scary too!" He should... explain this, yeah? "I mean, you could be around a creature that, say, could be scared and might get startled by the magic. Then they could attack and... that'll just make the situation worse. And then there are the muggles." Or... were they only talking about dangerous situations in Hogwarts?
"So... you only use it when you absolutely need to. Like, if you need to alert a Professor or someone but they're too far away or you don't know where they are."
Also, Candy Girl had a good point with the ice cream break. Nodnod.
Was he supposed to write it down? Forrest peeked at Headmistress' face. Yes. He probably should, since it was the Headmistress talking. He quickly jotted it down and listened to others' elaborations. He was too busy being shy listening to others to elaborate himself.
"I recognize that my professors always have my well-being and safety at heart." Again, green button if they agree, red button if they don't.
That other had been a pretty easy non-buzzing situation, so she wasn't surprised that she didn't get zapped. This next one was a little harder though. She knew the answer should be the green buzzer, because all professors should have their best interest at heart, but she had seen the way a few of the ladyfolk had eyed some of her fellow students and she SWORE they were seeing red. She gave a knowing look at Lex and considered that maybe not every teacher was too keen on her general energetic and sometimes argumentative attitude, but she hoped that they would all rise above personal feelings and come to the aid of every single student ever, so she pressed the green button. If not because of accuracy, but to inspire good things. Like hey professors...this should be your example to live by. Green, green, green.

Like she thought, that was the answer the wanted them to say. Even if some of the professors may not believe it themselves, not totally and completely anyway. There were still torture chambers in this castle, correct? So, soommmeone here must still not be on board with the fine and respectable treatment of students.
Moving on. This next one was a breeze. Of course everyone could contribute to make the school safe and happy. The students alone could pretty much overrun the school if they wanted and make it a horribly dangerous and wild place, should they choose, but not many people wanted that so they kept it pretty hunky dorey 'round these parts. She pressed the green buzzer and let a little yawn slip out.

"Who can elaborate on this acronym and explain what each line really means? Put it into the context of how to handle.... say, some sort of magical creature getting loose from class, if you'd like." Just as an example.
And poof! The cruel buzzers were wrong. She wondered if the other students' hands were hurting yet, or if it all just went away without any lingering sensations.
That acronym was pretty long and not exactly easy to remember, but the gist of it was simple. Although she thought explaining the entire thing was a bit much, she did so anyway. "Headmistress, I think they're each pretty easy to figure out. I mean, they're pretty spelled out and all." She meant no disrespect, but she couldn't really begin explaining without having said that - because it was how she felt and she didn't want people to think she was some big yuppy who just had no thoughts on the thing. "So, the first one means if there's a problem, you should tell an authority figure, like an adult or a prefect. The second line means you shouldn't run off to tackle some big problem on your own. Get some help for that stuff you know? The third line means you shouldn't let your emotions get the best of you. People tend to make bad decisions when they're all worked up, so you should stay calm and keep a cool head. The fourth line means, well, only use magic when you really really have to. And that's probably because we're all still students and it could go wrong, but...well I guess yes, only if you feel you must." Which she had felt before so...she'd used it. Ahem. "And the fifth line means...eh, know how to get out of the situation. Literally through a door or maybe even figuratively like not engaging in an issue or something like that." But still, sometimes if no one else was going to help you, you just had to do something about it, didn't you? She sat with her hands on her lap, wondering what weird long thing they'd have to try and learn next.

Oh, buzzers were gone. How absolutely wonderful.
Letting the kids give there thoughts on the acronym, Medea couldn't help but stare at Alexa for most of the time. Words, soooo many words in sentence format that could be said to her, but weren't. Speaking of sentence format words, oops! She was up!
"Good, most of you haff the hang of it. A, alert the authorities. Meaning a professor FIRST, and then if you cannot find a professor, than a prefect or captain. U, use teamvork, to get out of situations. Not to conquer them yourselves unless stated othervise by a professor. R, remain calm. If you don't, you'll be haffing one on one yoga sessions vith me." Just a little incentive for them there. "O, only use magic IF NECESSARY. Please, please, do not go and use magic right avay or at all if you can. I know ve all vont to help, but...don't. Unless stated othervise. By a professor. Ve'll talk more about this in just a moment. And finally, R, remember vhere the exits are. Take a look around your classroom the next time you're there and in the hallvays. Even your common rooms. You all know of the great entrance in front of the castle, and the paths down to the boating docks as vell as to Hogsmeade." DEEP BREATHE. "Please do find a prefect, captain, or professor to help you figure these out if you don't know vhere they are."
Hooooly Merlin, what else were they going to talk about? Fidget fidget. Ice cream. Oh! "Only use magic if necessary. Right. Let's go over the "if necessary" part and vot spells you should use. Ve all know our basic shield and disarming charms, correct? If you doooon't, this might be a good assignment for you to use your defense long term project hours for...and the more advanced shields for you older students." Riiiiiight? Hint hint.
"Does anyone know of any other basic defensive spells you might use in an emergency situation?"
"Does anyone know of any other basic defensive spells you might use in an emergency situation?"
Yep, it had all seemed pretty easy. She raised her hand, though she felt maybe this was a trick question. It seemed too basic, but...maybe she wasn't thinking straight. She wanted to go explore the castle and get some ice cream or something. "Professor, the first one that comes to my mind is the shield charm, incantation 'Protego'. If something was coming at you that is... Or you could use Expelliarmus if they had a wand, or you could silence them so they couldn't cast on you... Unless they could do it non-verbally." Was that what she was looking for? But if they didn't have a wand, she supposed you could try to immobilize them - as she'd tried and failed to do before.

"Expelliarmus." You know, just in case they were being attacked or something. Would be a good idea to know how to take someone's wand. And now Sky was wondering how much longer this lecture was going to go on. She was starting to get bored, and her rear was getting numb. Why couldn't the professor's have at least borrowed Mr. Kitridge's bean bags? Those would've been much more comfortable.

If Laura was the old Laura she would have had to say something clever because seriously the Professor had left it open for that, but well you see she was turning over a new leaf and so she was going to answer using her head, she raised her hand "Professor I would have to say that I would use the Shield Charm." Laura smiled, she loved that charm. "You see that way I can defend myself whilst thinking of which Professor was the closest to find."

Basic defensive spells. There had been a few they had brushed up on last term- West having just named one. Jory raised his hand. "There's another spell for a shield, Professor. Contego.''
Well, everyone was saying interesting charms. So Nigel was going to say the most obvious one. "There is Protego. But if it is an unknown curse. Then duck and cover can work."
Nigel was just happy that the buzzers were gone. His hands were beginning to hurt from all the zaps he had taken The fun had ran out and now his hands were in pain. Nigel rubs his hands hoping the feeling will go away.

The blonde was thinking of the stunning spell but she wasn't sure you'd pull that out unless absolutely necessary so she continued listening attentively instead.
"Does anyone know of any other basic defensive spells you might use in an emergency situation?"
"How about if one learns how to do the patronus messeger thing, so they can send for help? Can you teach me that please?" sending a dolphin would take much quicker then running... "the others mentioned some other defensive spells, yet how about a spell that can be used 'defensively, like sonurus, as basically this seminar is on how adults always know best so we would need that if we were to follow those tactics".
Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite
Alexa was trying, she really was, but after draining the last of her ice-cream and no further distractions were presented, she was forced to REALLY listen to Professor Romanos and it had her wrinkling her nose. Again with the alerting a Prefect or Captain. They weren't that much older and were still learning just like her. If a dark wizard was attacking it would be a bloody GOOD dark wizard, silent casting and all, what could they do except huddle everyone, find a hole and hope they didn't ALL die?? The Professor thing, she got that, but next on HER chain of command was Viviherself.
Fine, she would nod and agree to everything she was saying (and we're using 'agree' VERY loosely here) but only because she liked Professor Romanos. The woman opened up a world of hexes, jinxes and curses to her.
If she wasn't so busy being distracted by the questions she might have been giving her sparkly eyed looks but as it stood, the next question and her hand was definitely up.
"I'm afraid I have a bit of problems with most shield charms Professor, I mean, I have the simple ones like Protego and a few others but those won't always help. Couldn't you just blast whatever's headed toward you with Expulso or Confringo? The best defense is a good offense, isn't that right?"

Uh. Well, they all said every possible answer Kat could think of. Yes there were more but her brain didn't want to do any memory exercises right now. She'd have to dig in deeper, into her past lessons, to be able to know if she learnt some more of the defensive charms than the ones her schoolmates have said
So yeah, that. She was taking mental notes though so that it could be beneficial. Naaaah, her brain wasn't work enough to process more things. She just stuck to the simple ones like the spells they have all said. That was enough information for her.
