On the edge of the Dark Forest sits a small hut, home to many different residents over the years. The stone home’s current resident is Alistaire Firth, Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts.
Anyone who draws near the hut is likely to first notice the smell of traditional Scottish fare: stovies, haggis, and hotch-potch are the Groundskeeper’s personal favorites. The lowing of Broc and Bonny can be heard from a distance. Medicinal plants, some natural and some planted, surround the base of the structure, but several holes indicate places where plants died and no money could be found to replace them.
While the outside of the hut looks mostly the same as it has for decades, the inside shows Ali’s personal touches. The most prominent feature is a large field of blue with white diagonal lines crossing in an X—the Scottish national flag. Everything else is decorated with the same plaid tartan of the Douglas clan, a mix of blue and green. An old wooden table and sturdy bed frame comprise the only furniture of consequence in the one-room house. To the left of the entrance is a small kitchen set up, while a massive countertop dominates the right wall.
Few pictures or decorations adorn the walls, save one family photo in which one member’s face looks mysteriously burned or prodded. Books litter the floor space by the bed, including such titles as, “Scotland: A Complete History (Abridged Version),” “One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi,” “The Art of Bowtruckle Husbandry,” and “An Owner’s Guide to Proper Care of Highland Cattle.” A shabby set of bagpipes is hidden inside a small cabinet in a bedside table. The only other accoutrements are worn-looking tools lying helter-skelter in the corner.
Please knock on the door if you wish to speak with the Groundskeeper. If he does not answer immediately, he is probably either tending to Broc and Bonny or tromping through the Forbidden Forest. Though a busy man, Mr. Firth is kind, sympathetic, and never too busy to share his favorite drink, an Irn-Bru, with visiting students. But be warned: any trouble-making, especially involving his pets or the Forest, will be severely punished.

Looking back up to Mr. Firth, she offered one more thing before she went on her way. "If you ever need any more help, please feel free to owl me! I have my own owl, Luna, and she'd be glad to let me know if you need an extra hand." Even if those extra hands were made of stone...from a gargoyle. But she wasn't exactly sure how long they'd be allowed to keep those, so she might be doing the work with her flesh, human hands - which was fine.
He was glad students still liked the outdoors. What with all those muggle computers and things keeping the muggle kids inside, he was hoping the wizarding children wouldn't pick up the same bad habit. "Yeh're welcome," he replied to her thanks. "I'm sure Professor Cerulean and the students cin use all th' help they cin get." And there was no doubt in Alistaire's mind that the castle needed all hands on deck.
She wanted to be owled? Couldn't he just find her in the castle? Perhaps she didn't leave her common room much or something. "I'll let yeh know, bu' usually I've got it pretty well under control. Thanks fer stoppin' by!" he said, anxious to return back to his own work.

Lex banged hard on the door to the Grounds Keeper's hut, just in case the man had decided to take a nap or something because at the moment that wouldn't be very convenient. She needed him awake. Oh but then there was the matter of him being cranky if he were to be woken up.
Meh, she already knocked.
"Mr Firth??? Hellooooooo?? Should I knock some more???" She gave the door a few more well placed knocks before standing back and calling again. "Mr. Not Shiny Grounds Keeper??? I'd like to say it's an emergency but I don't know if you'd classify it as such so I'll say it half is!"

But seriously, he'd never guess and they didn't have all day to stand here hoping the most random of thoughts would hit him and he'd get it right so she just continued on. "I was walking out to the courtyard and THERE WAS A THESTRAL!!!" By now she was bouncing just a bit.
"Can you believe it?? A thestral!!!"
All her excitement probably made it harder for him to see the big emergency--technically she said it was a half emergency--so she settled a bit, remnants of her grin still present.
"Problem is, the poor thing looks like it's seen a ghost! Shaking and shivering, backing away from the direction of the forest. I think it might be lost. It doesn't seem violent though, I left the others to watch it so it wouldn't get away until I got you. Wouldn't want to lose something like that. It looks like it's headed for the castle." And she knew he could see them because he's the one who'd set one to watch them while he went looking for Audrey. He'd be able to help.

WOAH. She needed to stop with these guessing games and get to the half emergency. He tapped his foot in obvious impatience, but he didn't interrupt. He'd learned that it was faster to just let the students ramble. Because if he tried to get them to hurry, they'd just whine about how they needed to tell their story.

She could tell he'd been getting a bit impatient. See? This was why she opted to not let him have to guess. He'd probably just get frustrated and merlin knew that if he'd yelled at her to speed it a long she would have conveniently forgotten what she'd come to tell him. Her memory worked like that, funny thing, wasn't it?
Oh! They were moving quickly now! She watched him grabbed a few things then skipped along behind him. No need to lead the way, he could see it, no chance he'd walk right by it.

Down the grounds, down the grounds we go.. Wade lowly whistled along his way. He had some deliveries to make, with the extra stuff his order from The Quibbler gave him. Hmm.. Yep, no turning back now. To Wade, this was the perfect thing to give.
After arriving, he then rapped the back of his knuckles against the door of Mr. Firth's Hut a couple times. Now stepping back, with a box that had been wrapped recently held to his side. All gifts should be wrapped, you know. How else could items be prevented from getting messed up and lost as easily.

Hearing a knock on the door, the Groundskeeper groaned as he got up. Setting his project aside, he walked over to the door and pushed it open. Seeing a student who didn't look in distress, he relaxed a bit and said, "An' what cin I do fer yeh this fine day?"

"Hi, Mr. Firth," He ruffled the back of his own head, "Hope I'm not disturbing you." He then titled his head while asking. "How's Broc and Bronny doing?" Wade thought it was cool of him to have them.
Oh yeah, that box you have in your hand Wade. "Well, I had ordered some stuff for my teammates from The Quibbler and they gave me extra.." He kept it kind-of-sort-of-vague, wanting it be a surprise. Didn't everyone love the good kind of surprises? Well, the next thing Wade did was pass the wrapped box containing something only through Mr. Firth's eyes he could see, whether he wore it or not into his hands. "..and I figured it'll help you get closer to Broc and Bronny." Then he waited to see how Mr. Firth took it.

Sprint Jog Sprint Jog Sprint Jog...Yup Exhausted Oakey was Exhausted.
He was down to about a quarter of his Veggie Drink and suddenly wished he had water instead. He wiped at his forehead, and then his mouth, which was getting a tad dry. He had to finish a jog around the Groundskeepers Hut first. He had too!
Around and around he went jogging around the Hut like it was nobodies business. Maybe Firth was watching him from inside, maybe he wasn't. Either way Oakey finished his third lap around the Hut and moved onward to the Butterfly Garden where he would then get back to the Whomping Willow.

As he opened the lid and took out the gift, all he could do was blink uncomprehendingly for a moment. Then, as if a lightbulb had been turned on, he suddenly burst into laughter. "Tha's great!" Ali said enthusiastically. "Thank you, Wade!" Firth thought that was his name, at least. He'd heard it from Quidditch announcements.

He definitely wasn't going to forget that experience, so it was relief to Wade that the little cow family was progressing well. "That's awesome.. is it cool if I go see them?" Even if it meant gazing across the pen.
Well, he did it. Wade finally gave it to Mr. Firth. That cow onesie just about screamed for Mr. Firth when Wade unexpectedly found it in the original parcel along with the others onesies he ordered. Was it worth diving into him and his cousin's savings? Let's see then.

Now he knew how to approach them, he just needed to be extra careful doing so. Although easier than hippogriffs, the first impressions on them were always the most important. So, of course Wade wasn't going to lose this opportunity. Oh, and one more thing. "Is feeding them as well, okay?" Well, since he didn't know if they already ate or not.
Nice and warm, yep. There was nothing like wearing them while feasting on pickles dipped in ice cream in the early mornings. "Yeah, mine's a tiger." He chuckled, since that made him a Kitty to others. Hmm? "Whoa, really? I'll definitely wear mine then." He beamed. Best excuse not to wear your school uniform, ever.. Hmm? Wait.. what was it that Mr. Firth just gave him? Five points? Wade blinked just then. It was so unexpected. "Oh..wow.. thanks Mr. Firth." This visit just became awesome.

Over here, Jory!" he called. "Yeh can stop knockin' down my door now!" he said, chuckling as he drew near. "What cin I do fer yeh on this fine summer day?"

He noticed the gloves and figured Firth had been working. "I won't be long then,'' the seventh year said to himself. Didn't want to keep the man from his work.
"I've just come to give you this,'' Jory said. "Because, you know, it's my last year and all. Hope you like it.'' He really didn't know what else to get Mr. Firth but he thought the shirt said everything. "You're a pretty cool guy, Mr. Firth.''

Firth nodded. "Tha's about th' best yeh cin hope fer, I think. I doubt if anyone really feels like they're on top o' everythin' fer those." He knew he certainly hadn't himself. "Jus' make sure ter still get yer rest. Tha's important fer yer brain ter be able to remember what yeh jus' studied. An' so yeh don' get sick, o' course."
"I's a plan! Anytime yeh'd like, really." Unless he wasn't around the hut, obviously. "Will do!"
