Where just the other patroni too small. So they can be eaten. Or was Vinteren's patronus "special". These were some interesting questions that Nigel would need answering soon. At least. No other patroni were needed. It was weird that Dylan's patronus was eaten again. Nothing he could do about that. Nigel let go of his wand and relaxed in his seat. Now. What where they going to do. Just do along with class. Was class over. More and more questions. |
Kace was glad the Professor's patronus worked against the dementor. He didn't want to be on their menu....no way! He felt relieved when they were retreating. But he was curious to know why his patronus worked and no one else's did. That was a bit confusing. But OH WELL...they were GONE. For now..... He was still shaking and felt terrible. He felt the cold sweat dripping from his forehead running down his face. He even felt the sweat on his neck and back. He didn't even feel like himself anymore. Standing there still shuddering, Kace was wondering why the dementors were coming into the castle. Surely they had protection of somesorts? This was all leading to unanswered questions.... |
Holy catch up! SPOILER!!: If you have any house elves, clap your hands Eliza tried to think of examples of elf magic, but only knew a couple. She offered them anyway, happy to hear that they'd be learning more later on as well. "Well, sir, I know they can apparate into places that we can't sometimes. And they also seem to know when people are calling them or are looking for them, because they just pop up and are ready to do whatever is needed. I'm not sure how that works exactly though." It made her think of the ringing ears superstition when people were supposedly talking about you, but she was sure it was a more specific science than that. She didn't have a house elf at home, so Eliza kept quiet as she watched and listened to the other students. They couldn't have a house elf at home, lest her muggle neighbors spot him or her zipping around the kitchen. Neighbors could be awfully nosy sometimes, so it was best for them to keep their magic on the down low. SPOILER!!: Where have all the house elves gone? Well of course no one really knows where they'd gone, or we wouldn't be talking about it here now, now would we? Eliza thought, amused. And she did know that the elves had masters, and those masters could make them do literally anything, because they...owned them. She cringed at the thought of the immorality of it. But she knew what he was getting at, and that trying to get the gears of their brains turning was all part of the teaching deal, so she listened calmly to the suggestions. She even threw in her two cents, though she didn't fully speculate on the matter, since she'd been pretty pre-occupied this term and hadn't developed a very plush theory yet. "I agree with some of the others that it must have to do with Hogwarts losing or having to sell some of their possessions. Not that I think it's right, but house elves are technically property, which isn't very humane in my opinion, but maybe that's why they're gone. They had to be sold or well...like I read in the paper, things were stolen from Hogwarts - so they could've been a package deal somehow." Which was truly tragic to think of. They were living beings! Not cups and saucers! SPOILER!!: Penny for your thoughts? There sure were a lot of theories going around, but like she'd already said, she thought the whole stolen, lost, or sold thing sounded the most accurate. But now...the more people talked about it... "The more I hear sir, the more I start to think they were stolen. Like how it's been said about the deed - whomever stole the deed now technically on paper kind of owns the elves - but there's got to be some clause in house elf magic or wizarding law that differentiates between true ownership and possession by theft isn't there? Also, how on earth would someone even break into Gringott's in the first place? They must've had some employees on their side to be able to get into a vault as important and historical as Hogwarts'." She paused to think further. "Also, why steal the deed at all? To hold some sort of power over the heads of the Hogwarts officials? It doesn't make sense. Everyone would know it was stolen, so there's no real power there. Just paper. Hogwarts will always truly belong to those that respect and love it, and live and learn in it - like we all do." So that thief could just give it a rest, he or she would never really win what they thought they would. Things like deeds and money didn't really matter anyway. "As for what we can do about it, I think further investigation would be the first step. Figuring out some suspects. Who would do this and why? Go from there, question people, look for suspicious activity, try to track down who did this. I'd start by asking the Gringott's employees, the BoG, and the Headmistress - just as a place to start." She was sure the police had already attempted this though, hadn't they? SPOILER!!: Mr. Postman She had to agree with Minerva on this one. No drugging the house elf who was sad and didn't seem to know anything anyway. That would just be mean. She truly hoped they could get to the bottom of this whole thing though and reunite the elves. Eliza had always wondered how owls just inherently knew how to find people, no matter where they were. It was amazing really. She wondered if there were scientists out there right now, trying to figure it out. Which made her think of a question, "Professor? Can Legilimency be used on animals? If so, it seems we could try to read an owl's mind to find where they were going to deliver a letter. Or potentially, could read how they know to do this in the first place." If it was some sort of hive mind...shared and stored, endless amounts of information. But how did it get there? No, it must be something they felt rather than knew, right? Something in them that pulled them towards the person they sought, whether they'd ever met them or not though... That part made it tricky. It was hard to sense someone you'd never been around before... "Or if you can't read the minds of animals, could we attach a tracking device to an owl who is set to deliver to one of our missing elves? That would lead us straight to where at least one of them was being held or instructed to live. Or, we could get a rescue team to fly their brooms behind the owl, see the location it went to, devise a sound plan, notify the officials, and then go in and save them all." She would sign up to help if they needed assistance. She liked to fly, cared about the elves, and loved owls, so it seemed like a good match. However, she knew she probably wouldn't be much help with the actual rescuing part. She copied down her idea in her suggestion of what to do type letter and sat it on his desk once she'd finished. SPOILER!!: Letter SPOILER!!: Dementors! Just as she'd turned around from setting her letter on his desk, she felt chilled to the bone. And it wasn't long before she saw why that was. In front of her, coming in through the classroom door, were more dementors. She had seen enough of them this term! Not wanting to fall faint all by her lonesome, she rushed over to Min and Ethan. If she was going to die, she wanted to be with friends. She crouched down by their side, not wanting to hide behind Ethan entirely, scared as she was. She would do her best to protect them both if she could, though she did not know how to produce a corpeal patronus. There were other ways of saving friends. Ways like distracting the hooded soul suckers by thinking her own happy thoughts, pulling their attention from her friends and onto herself. She hoped she could help in at least one way... But the closer they got, the more helpless she felt. She tried to focus on happier times. Her mother baking cookies, her father showing her his newest invention, braiding her sister's pretty hair, the way her brother giggled when she gave him a hug and kiss every summer when she came back from school....These, these were the memories a dementor craved, and though she knew she couldn't complete the spell, she raised her wand and cried out, "Expecto Patronum!" A small puff of silver mist poofed from the tip of her wand, but nothing more. It was all she had, all her happiness, all her loving memories seemed to dissipate with the lackluster spell and she began to cry. ... Thankfully the professor was here again to save the day, and he scared off the dementors easily. As the chill and sorrow began to lift, her mind cleared and a very good question was asked. She eyed Vinteren suspiciously, warily, and almost with a touch of fear - though she'd do her best to hide it. Yes, Mr. Vinteren, why does only your patronus work on these dementors? |
"BeCAUSE," Tobias said as he poked his head out from under the desk and stared at everyone. Clearly the dementors were gone because people were IDLY CHIT-CHATTING. Ahem. "He's a teacher-man-person. And teacher-man-persons have powerful magic." DuuUUUHHHHH. But Tobias didn't stand up. He just knelt there with his head poking up through the desks staring at everyone. He was so fed UP of DEMENTORS and being SAD and NEGATIVE VIBES. "Thank you sir." For like the life saving. Then Toby went back to his floor-sitting. Sadsadsad. |
She KNEW it!!! Knew it! Knew it! Knew it! Their patronuses wouldn't be worth nothin', Mr. Vinteren was the one who would have everything under control and actually he did. Within a few flicks of his wrist the dementors were floating away. It was just one of those things, you know?? All her confidence was in him and not the people who figured they'd go ahead and give the dementors a snack. There was a reason why the signs at zoos said 'Do NOT feed the animals'!! It was no wonder they kept coming back, what with all the incentive and appetizers they were getting even she could see how they were starting to look like the main course! Mer-lin! But they were gone now and she moved forward so she was grinning up at the man who'd single-handedly saved them all. "That was just as epic as the night of the Prefect's Event Sir! You sure showed 'em!!!" BEEEEEAAAAM. |

He paced outside into the corridor just to check which way they had gone -stupid things had no sense of direction- and then returned to the room to dismiss the class. Quote:

"It is as Tobias says, I vould vhink...like you, your patronuses are young and untempered. You need a bit ov power, intention, and practise behind vhem if you truly vish to drive away a group of dementors." It was obvious he didn't particularly care to answer this question in great detail when dementors were on the loose, so the professor again started for the door. Quote:
"Class dismissed," Erik called over his shoulder, "homework is to turn in your letters if you haven't done so already." Then he was gone. |
He was just going to leave like that? Just...gone? Was it safe to leave, then? Ella wasn't sure. The blonde looked around and frowned slightly, wondering if anyone else felt as uneasy about this whole thing as she did. "Um...anyone headed back to the Hufflepuff common room, want to walk together?" Ella asked timidly, wand still in hand. She was mostly speaking to Tobias who was still under the desk but anyone else headed towards the kitchen corridor area was welcome to come. |

But there were still dementors everywhere and that was like... bad. Quote:
Tobias collected his things and shoved them all into his bag, ready to leave. As he shouldered his schoolbag his hand brushed against something rectangular in his pocket and he pulled it out. Chocolate. He'd been carrying it around for emergencies ever since the Fright Fest. A fresh bar, too. Toby opened up the wrapped and snapped a little bit off, nibbling on it. Then he put the rest of the bar on a nearby desk "Anyone else can have some of this chocolate, too, if they want." He had loads back in his dormitory, and he was actually starting to get a bit sick of the stuff. With that he went over to Ella 'cause she was a bodyguard and everything. |

Gathering his things, he headed over to where Ella was and got ready to leave. |
Sky didn't have to be told twice. She quickly gathered her belongings and hightailed it out of there just as Vinteren said class dismissed. Though, she wasn't headed to look for dementors, but to send a letter to her aunt. Maybe she'd be able to send some kind of help to the castle? Because this whole dementor thing was getting ridiculous. |
