oh its Erik ok 07-29-2013 01:51 AM

Where just the other patroni too small. So they can be eaten. Or was Vinteren's patronus "special". These were some interesting questions that Nigel would need answering soon.

At least. No other patroni were needed. It was weird that Dylan's patronus was eaten again. Nothing he could do about that. Nigel let go of his wand and relaxed in his seat.

Now. What where they going to do. Just do along with class. Was class over.

More and more questions.

Expecto-Penguin 07-29-2013 02:23 AM

Kace was glad the Professor's patronus worked against the dementor. He didn't want to be on their menu....no way! He felt relieved when they were retreating. But he was curious to know why his patronus worked and no one else's did. That was a bit confusing. But OH WELL...they were GONE. For now.....

He was still shaking and felt terrible. He felt the cold sweat dripping from his forehead running down his face. He even felt the sweat on his neck and back. He didn't even feel like himself anymore. Standing there still shuddering, Kace was wondering why the dementors were coming into the castle. Surely they had protection of somesorts?

This was all leading to unanswered questions....

"Does anyone in here haff a house elf in his/her family? Or more vhan one elf?" He was curious to see a show of hands...and the responses to his follow-up questions. Surely the students could tell them more about the creatures that lived in their own homes and up until this year, had taken care of them in this very castle...

Eliza tried to think of examples of elf magic, but only knew a couple. She offered them anyway, happy to hear that they'd be learning more later on as well. "Well, sir, I know they can apparate into places that we can't sometimes. And they also seem to know when people are calling them or are looking for them, because they just pop up and are ready to do whatever is needed. I'm not sure how that works exactly though." It made her think of the ringing ears superstition when people were supposedly talking about you, but she was sure it was a more specific science than that.

She didn't have a house elf at home, so Eliza kept quiet as she watched and listened to the other students. They couldn't have a house elf at home, lest her muggle neighbors spot him or her zipping around the kitchen. Neighbors could be awfully nosy sometimes, so it was best for them to keep their magic on the down low.

SPOILER!!: Where have all the house elves gone?

Well of course no one really knows where they'd gone, or we wouldn't be talking about it here now, now would we? Eliza thought, amused. And she did know that the elves had masters, and those masters could make them do literally anything, because they...owned them. She cringed at the thought of the immorality of it. But she knew what he was getting at, and that trying to get the gears of their brains turning was all part of the teaching deal, so she listened calmly to the suggestions. She even threw in her two cents, though she didn't fully speculate on the matter, since she'd been pretty pre-occupied this term and hadn't developed a very plush theory yet. "I agree with some of the others that it must have to do with Hogwarts losing or having to sell some of their possessions. Not that I think it's right, but house elves are technically property, which isn't very humane in my opinion, but maybe that's why they're gone. They had to be sold or well...like I read in the paper, things were stolen from Hogwarts - so they could've been a package deal somehow." Which was truly tragic to think of. They were living beings! Not cups and saucers!

SPOILER!!: Penny for your thoughts?

While the students were developing their theories about where Hogwarts' elves had gone, the blackboard finished its note-taking on house elf characteristics. "Copy these down," Erik gestured toward the board before resuming his usual question and answer method of teaching.

Text Cut: blackboard
House Elf Characteristics
-work for free
-loyal to their masters
-extremely obedient of their masters
-owned by old wizarding families
-good at keeping secrets
-good at cooking, cleaning, household chores
-speak with poor grammar, have 'silly' names
-may become offended when offered help with tasks
-often self-punish or hurt self when facing failure
-do not wear clothing (tea towels, pillowcases instead)
-set free when given clothing by master
-classified as 'beings' by Ministry of Magic

"So, theories on vhe missing house elves....vhis is history in vhe making, did you all know?" He turned around to the second blackboard and waved his wand at it lightly.
Why Hogwarts' Elves Are Gone
-they got new jobs
-they were elfnapped
-they had to leave, but didn't want to go
-House Elf Relocation Office moved them
-they're on strike
-Headmistress sent them away
-Headmistress sold them to pay off school debts
-someone stole the castle deed and set them free
-other theories?
"Let's discuss this." Erik returned to his desk and his lean against it, giving the class some very serious looks. "Vhich theory seems most accurate to you, and vhy?? Vhat can we do about it, to possibly bring vhe elves back?"

There sure were a lot of theories going around, but like she'd already said, she thought the whole stolen, lost, or sold thing sounded the most accurate. But now...the more people talked about it... "The more I hear sir, the more I start to think they were stolen. Like how it's been said about the deed - whomever stole the deed now technically on paper kind of owns the elves - but there's got to be some clause in house elf magic or wizarding law that differentiates between true ownership and possession by theft isn't there? Also, how on earth would someone even break into Gringott's in the first place? They must've had some employees on their side to be able to get into a vault as important and historical as Hogwarts'." She paused to think further. "Also, why steal the deed at all? To hold some sort of power over the heads of the Hogwarts officials? It doesn't make sense. Everyone would know it was stolen, so there's no real power there. Just paper. Hogwarts will always truly belong to those that respect and love it, and live and learn in it - like we all do." So that thief could just give it a rest, he or she would never really win what they thought they would. Things like deeds and money didn't really matter anyway. "As for what we can do about it, I think further investigation would be the first step. Figuring out some suspects. Who would do this and why? Go from there, question people, look for suspicious activity, try to track down who did this. I'd start by asking the Gringott's employees, the BoG, and the Headmistress - just as a place to start." She was sure the police had already attempted this though, hadn't they?

And regarding Toddles...ve haff already determined vhat he is friendly toward vhe students and forthcoming vith information regarding his fellow elves' whereabouts. Correct?" Erik looked toward Penelope and Alexa specifically. "Vhy don't ve try contacting vhe other elves instead?"

It was time to move on with the lesson anyway. Erik strolled around to his desk and opened a drawer in the centre of it with his wand. He took out a thick stack of blank parchments and returned to the centre aisle, where he started moving down the rows and passing out enough parchment for each student to have at least one piece. When he was finished, he returned to the front of the room and dropped the extras lightly on top of his desk.

"Vhe beauty of wizard communication is vhat ve have an intelligent creature delivering our mail for us." He gave the class a look. "Haff you ever wondered how it is vhat owls alvays, or almost always, know where to deliver your letters? Vhey don't need addresses to find a person. I vould like to vhink vhe same works for elves, considering vhat vhey, too, are classified as intelligent beings."

He paused. "Today you haff a few options: one, you may write a letter on vhis specially charmed parchment to one of Hogwarts' house elves, asking vhem vhere vhey have gone, why, vhen vhey plan to return, vhat sort of vhing, and trust vhat I vill do everyvhing in my power to see it delivered to vhem. Two, you may write to whomever you vhink took vhe elves, or sold or freed vhem, and ask for vhem back. Or three, you may come up vith your own option and write your own theory of vhat happened to vhe elves and vhat you think you could do to help bring vhem home to Hogwarts."

Another paaaaause. "Any questions? Before you get started, I vould recommend having a class discussion about vhe elves ve are missing here. It vould help if you knew vheir names as you're writing to vhem." If the students even knew this information. He did, but he was a Governor, and a staff member at present. Of course he knew these things.

She had to agree with Minerva on this one. No drugging the house elf who was sad and didn't seem to know anything anyway. That would just be mean. She truly hoped they could get to the bottom of this whole thing though and reunite the elves.

Eliza had always wondered how owls just inherently knew how to find people, no matter where they were. It was amazing really. She wondered if there were scientists out there right now, trying to figure it out. Which made her think of a question, "Professor? Can Legilimency be used on animals? If so, it seems we could try to read an owl's mind to find where they were going to deliver a letter. Or potentially, could read how they know to do this in the first place." If it was some sort of hive mind...shared and stored, endless amounts of information. But how did it get there? No, it must be something they felt rather than knew, right? Something in them that pulled them towards the person they sought, whether they'd ever met them or not though... That part made it tricky. It was hard to sense someone you'd never been around before... "Or if you can't read the minds of animals, could we attach a tracking device to an owl who is set to deliver to one of our missing elves? That would lead us straight to where at least one of them was being held or instructed to live. Or, we could get a rescue team to fly their brooms behind the owl, see the location it went to, devise a sound plan, notify the officials, and then go in and save them all." She would sign up to help if they needed assistance. She liked to fly, cared about the elves, and loved owls, so it seemed like a good match. However, she knew she probably wouldn't be much help with the actual rescuing part.

She copied down her idea in her suggestion of what to do type letter and sat it on his desk once she'd finished.
SPOILER!!: Letter

To whomever it may concern,

I believe we should send letters with owls to the Hogwarts house elves. Then we should attach tracking devices or charms on them to see where they are going. Or, we could assemble a squad of aurors or other officials to fly behind the owls, in secrecy of course, to try and locate the elves' whereabouts. This would allow us to scout their location(s) and devise a good plan on how to safely and effectively retrieve and rescue the elves.

I believe the sooner we do this, the sooner and closer we get to figuring out who stole the deed and presumably the ownership of the elves. This place where they are may just be a hide out though, so we may need to look for clues at this location in order to find the residence of the culprit. At any rate, I feel this course of action would be a step in the right direction, as I don't really have an ideas as to who would be silly enough to try and get away with stealing from Hogwarts. They'd have to know that sooner or later they would be caught.

Thank you for your consideration,
Please let me know if I can help in any way.
-Eliza Dawnsel,
Hogwarts student and concerned house elf friend

Swooping into the classroom after easily opening the door with their awesome dementor abilities, the flock of hungry dementors came down upon the students.

Vinteren was looking at his watch to see how much longer the others had to submit their letters when he felt a weird chill come creeping into the classroom. How unusual; he kept his room and office very warm and well-stocked with firewood. Expecting the worst, Erik slowly rose from his desk and flicked his wand into his hand, just as the door blew open.

Oh no...nooo no no no no no...they were supposed to be on the second floor, this was the first floor. It was all wrong. Wrong wrong wrong wrong. "Expecto Patronum," Erik whispered, a hippogriff exploding out of his wand on cue and flying toward the dementors. It was just one though, as he hesitated to see whether he would need more...

"I did not invite vhem here," Erik answered the Hufflepuff loudly. He moved out from behind his desk now, his eyes still fixed on the dementors with a firm frown.

But what...what was she doing? Why was Alexa Cambridge t o u c h i n g him? Again? Hadn't her hug catastrophe from detention been enough???!

Erik sidled away from the girl and into a defensive position in front of her. He wouldn't have her clinging to him but he would do her a favour and be a shield. Of sorts.

...they would be needing more patronuses now. Erik shook himself, forcing himself to focus, and started shooting a few more out of his wand. "Wands out, everyvone," he also calmly ordered the class. "Get behind me." If they could.

He, meanwhile, took a few steps closer to the dementors. Go away go away go away go anywhere but not here.

Just as she'd turned around from setting her letter on his desk, she felt chilled to the bone. And it wasn't long before she saw why that was. In front of her, coming in through the classroom door, were more dementors. She had seen enough of them this term! Not wanting to fall faint all by her lonesome, she rushed over to Min and Ethan. If she was going to die, she wanted to be with friends.

She crouched down by their side, not wanting to hide behind Ethan entirely, scared as she was. She would do her best to protect them both if she could, though she did not know how to produce a corpeal patronus. There were other ways of saving friends. Ways like distracting the hooded soul suckers by thinking her own happy thoughts, pulling their attention from her friends and onto herself. She hoped she could help in at least one way...

But the closer they got, the more helpless she felt. She tried to focus on happier times. Her mother baking cookies, her father showing her his newest invention, braiding her sister's pretty hair, the way her brother giggled when she gave him a hug and kiss every summer when she came back from school....These, these were the memories a dementor craved, and though she knew she couldn't complete the spell, she raised her wand and cried out, "Expecto Patronum!" A small puff of silver mist poofed from the tip of her wand, but nothing more. It was all she had, all her happiness, all her loving memories seemed to dissipate with the lackluster spell and she began to cry.

...

Thankfully the professor was here again to save the day, and he scared off the dementors easily. As the chill and sorrow began to lift, her mind cleared and a very good question was asked. She eyed Vinteren suspiciously, warily, and almost with a touch of fear - though she'd do her best to hide it. Yes, Mr. Vinteren, why does only your patronus work on these dementors?

Felixir 07-29-2013 02:55 AM

"BeCAUSE," Tobias said as he poked his head out from under the desk and stared at everyone. Clearly the dementors were gone because people were IDLY CHIT-CHATTING. Ahem. "He's a teacher-man-person. And teacher-man-persons have powerful magic."

DuuUUUHHHHH.

But Tobias didn't stand up. He just knelt there with his head poking up through the desks staring at everyone. He was so fed UP of DEMENTORS and being SAD and NEGATIVE VIBES. "Thank you sir."

For like the life saving.

Then Toby went back to his floor-sitting. Sadsadsad.

She KNEW it!!! Knew it! Knew it! Knew it! Their patronuses wouldn't be worth nothin', Mr. Vinteren was the one who would have everything under control and actually he did. Within a few flicks of his wrist the dementors were floating away. It was just one of those things, you know??

All her confidence was in him and not the people who figured they'd go ahead and give the dementors a snack. There was a reason why the signs at zoos said 'Do NOT feed the animals'!!

It was no wonder they kept coming back, what with all the incentive and appetizers they were getting even she could see how they were starting to look like the main course! Mer-lin! But they were gone now and she moved forward so she was grinning up at the man who'd single-handedly saved them all.

"That was just as epic as the night of the Prefect's Event Sir! You sure showed 'em!!!"

Each student patronus made for a lovely appetizer for their sweet little souls...

Or not.

The herd of silvery hippogriffs pushed the flock backwards, their scabby hands recoiling back into their black cloaks.

Messaged received, they allowed themselves to be push out of the History of Magic classroom.

FINE. No kissy kissy...for now.

Another round of hippogriffs seemed to do it, and Vinteren was again calm and collected once the dementors had fled the classroom. "Thank Odin," he muttered under his breath, along with a string of fine Nordic phrases not suitable for younger ears.

He paced outside into the corridor just to check which way they had gone -stupid things had no sense of direction- and then returned to the room to dismiss the class.

Mo found his wand was out in his hand, which was a comfort. At least he tried to fight back, even if he'd never produced a corporeal patronus. He holstered his wand and scooted toward the big scary professor.

"Professor? Why don't they eat your patronus too?"

"It is as Tobias says, I vould vhink...like you, your patronuses are young and untempered. Only to be stopped by Alexa Cambridge, beaming up at him brightly. Yikes. "Vhank you Alexa. Now please, see vhat your classmates make it out ov here unharmed..." He, meanwhile, was going to track down the dementors.

"Class dismissed," Erik called over his shoulder, "homework is to turn in your letters if you haven't done so already." Then he was gone.

TakemetotheBurrow 07-29-2013 08:32 PM

He was just going to leave like that? Just...gone? Was it safe to leave, then? Ella wasn't sure. The blonde looked around and frowned slightly, wondering if anyone else felt as uneasy about this whole thing as she did.

"Um...anyone headed back to the Hufflepuff common room, want to walk together?" Ella asked timidly, wand still in hand. She was mostly speaking to Tobias who was still under the desk but anyone else headed towards the kitchen corridor area was welcome to come.

Tobias was totally ON the BALL today. He game a tiny little smile, though nobody could see it what with him being, you know, on the floor. He was happy he was right, because it briefly made him feel a little better.

But there were still dementors everywhere and that was like... bad.

Then a familiar voice spoke up, and Tobias reappeared once again. First his hand flew into view, and then he clambered up from the floor, hand in the air. "Me. Me, I want to walk together." Hang on, that didn't sound right... well, whatever.

Tobias collected his things and shoved them all into his bag, ready to leave. As he shouldered his schoolbag his hand brushed against something rectangular in his pocket and he pulled it out. Chocolate. He'd been carrying it around for emergencies ever since the Fright Fest. A fresh bar, too. Toby opened up the wrapped and snapped a little bit off, nibbling on it. Then he put the rest of the bar on a nearby desk

"Anyone else can have some of this chocolate, too, if they want."

He had loads back in his dormitory, and he was actually starting to get a bit sick of the stuff.

With that he went over to Ella 'cause she was a bodyguard and everything.

Asher perked up when he heard Ella mention walking with others back to the common room. "I'll tag along, Ella." His head hurt and he was tired. Being back in the Hufflepuff common room and next to the fire seemed like just the thing to make him feel better.

Gathering his things, he headed over to where Ella was and got ready to leave.

Sky didn't have to be told twice. She quickly gathered her belongings and hightailed it out of there just as Vinteren said class dismissed. Though, she wasn't headed to look for dementors, but to send a letter to her aunt. Maybe she'd be able to send some kind of help to the castle? Because this whole dementor thing was getting ridiculous.
