Ethan still wasn't completely sure what this letter writing business was really going to do. After all, writing to the goblins in their SNAC meeting certainly did not get them their crystal balls back. But it was the assignment and if it could help the elves in some way, he'd do it. Quill poised above his parchment, green eyes lifted to the board and the names written there. A nostalgic smile played on his lips as he thought about three elves in particular who helped him cook something special a couple years ago.. though the thought of them made him a little sad as well since they were gone and no one seemed to know what happened to them That was actually a disturbing thought now that he thought about it. He had originally thought that the elves had been sold to cover debts.. though now he was not so sure. And whether they were or not, he didn't know who might be in possession of them now anyway, so that sort of limited his options with this assignment. The Prefect decided to write directly to the elves, not that he was certain they'd receive his letter, but that's what he was doing. SPOILER!!: Letter to Elves Ethan paused his quill in mid-sentence as he suddenly felt a chill wash over him and a hand tightly grip his arm. Green eyes went first to the hand, then to Minerva, then they followed her gaze.. which caused his eyes to widen in horror. Dementors?! Again?? In the classroom? He brought a hand up to his ear as the haunting scream filtered through his mind.. though he knew he couldn't block out the sound. It wasn't exactly external. As he tried to fight the memory his eyes wandered to Vinteren as the Prefect's other hand scrambled to reach for his wand. But the Professor successfully fended off dementors in front of him once before.. surely he would protect the class again..? |
She was just sitting there, a bundle of nerves due to the page she'd just turned in, when it suddenly got cold in the classroom. A quick peek around at her classmates told her that no it wasn't just her and yes it was exactly what she thought it was. The creepy dementors had found their way into the school. And this time, she was at much closer range. Right next to one, as matter of fact. Meep. Sky didn't know rather to get up and run or cast a patronus. Thing was, both seemed like too much effort, and she was just too sad. Nobody would miss her, right? Her parents had Parker now, Aunt Roxi had Ronan and she hadn't gotten that close to anyone at Hogwarts. She was so lost in those thoughts, plus all of her bad memories that she didn't even notice the tears flowing down her cheeks. Damn. |
So, they had to write a letter. And she had already made a couple of notes on that. She actually scribbled some notes on the three options first to see which one of the three options to see which one she had more thoughts on. Finally, she decided to write to whom ever STOLE the elves. Reaching for her quill, the snake hunched down and started scribbling her tongue stuck out in concentration. Oh, she's been waiting for this chance forevah! SPOILER!!: The letter The snake finished the letter and reread it, then wiped the non-existed sweat on her forehead. PHEW! Man, she's been bottling this up the entire year. Finally she got the chance to vent. For a split second she wondered whether the signature was a liiittle bit dramatic but then she shrugged. Dramatic was good. And pretending to do stuff was good too. The fourth-year folded the parchment then walked over to the Professor's desk and handed him the letter then she returned to her desk. Quote:
...... Ooops. |
Text Cut: Vinteren! Right... okay... so they had a list of elf names. This was actually really useful. Alec sat back and tapped the end of his quill against his chin, his grey-blue eyes scanning the list. See, it would be smart to write to the head of the elves because the others would be around him, yeah? Unless... they had each been sold off? ... That was actually a sad thought. The Hufflepuff picked up his quill and started scribbling away... Text Cut: Letter! Full name. Because this was important. Nodnod. The sixteen year old was sitting back and reading through his letter when the classroom turned... cold. Confused, he looked up at the Professor and then over towards the door and... BLINK. BLINK. Groan. Not again! His chin wobbled just a bit as he looked away from the Dementors and down at his desk. He really didn't know what he expected to achieve by looking away, though. Maybe the coldness and sadness wouldn't seem so... piercing? Or cruel? And maybe the voices he was hearing wouldn't be so loud? Maybe. But looking away made no difference and so, instead, Alec looked up at Vinteren and sort of... waited for him to do something. The older guy would be able to fend off the Dementors, right? |

Her eyes never left the creatures as they descended. She didn't know HOW to cast a patronus, she was, for lack of a better word, screwed. Ah but not really. Lex latched on to the end of his coat and moved even closer--if that was possible. It probably wasn't, then she waited on him to be the epic man she thought he was. Well, what was he waiting for? They wouldn't have their souls forever. She looked to the others in the room. If they were smart they would go to the ONLY ONE who was able to cast a PERFECTLY FUNCTIONAL patronus. Like...theirs only distracted dementors...his made them leave. Clearly she knew what she was doing. |

In BIG letters he wrote "'BOARD OF GOVERNORS' THEORY" at the top of his parchment, and sucked gently at the very tip of the feathered end of his quill, trying to think of something to write. But his mind was RACING and there were SO MANY IDEAS and he was trying to work out how to coherently write them down whilst people around him were already finishing. Hey, no fair! But then a sudden movement at the door startled Tobias... Quote:
NOPE. NOPENOPENOPE. ABSOLUTELY NOT. This was absolutely too much and the SECOND he heard that awful rattling noise and then caught sight of SWOOPING DEMENTORS, Toby decided on the 'absolutely NOT' option. Quill still in hand, Tobias grabbed the parchment in front of him and SLID down on his chair so he was now under his desk and out of sight and protected by the dementors by the wood of his desk, with his emergency chocolate that was still in his pocket in case he needed it. Because, just to reiterate... NOPE. |

He pulled his robes around himself and waited for the professor to do something about it. |
Text Cut: Those of you who RP'd as turning letters in. Vinteren was looking at his watch to see how much longer the others had to submit their letters when he felt a weird chill come creeping into the classroom. How unusual; he kept his room and office very warm and well-stocked with firewood. Expecting the worst, Erik slowly rose from his desk and flicked his wand into his hand, just as the door blew open. Erik sidled away from the girl and into a defensive position in front of her. He wouldn't have her clinging to him but he would do her a favour and be a shield. Of sorts. ...they would be needing more patronuses now. Erik shook himself, forcing himself to focus, and started shooting a few more out of his wand. "Wands out, everyvone," he also calmly ordered the class. "Get behind me." If they could. He, meanwhile, took a few steps closer to the dementors. Go away go away go away go anywhere but not here. |
Rattle rattle rattle. What? No Patronus Charms this time? If dementors could feel disappointment they certainly would be feeling so right now. Sensing such young and delicious souls oh so close, they swooped in closer, their scabby hands reaching out towards the students. Come on now, give your favorite dementors a big ol' kissy kissy. |
Wands out? HA. As if that would do any good for Toby. Still, he heard the command and hastened to obey. Teacher as a human shield, yes that would do. Tobias didn't get out from under the desk though, he merely started to travel towards Vinteren's voice via the underdesk express. Choo choo and such. WAIT THERE WAS ONE NEARBY, GROSS. DEFINITELY A SCABBY HAND UGH IT LOOKED ROTTED. Toby was having none of it. He was angry because the dementors made him sad. He was sad and angry. Sangry. Because he was like 5000% done with these things, he aimed a bad-tempered kick towards what was definitely a dementor as he crawwwwwwled through the desk legs. Only the ones nobody was sitting at though. "BACK foul creature!" he couldn't help but add. CRAWLCRAWLCRAWL. |
Minerva watched in horror as Professor awesome only did a small patronus.. SAY WHAT!!! NO.. he was going to do all his big bad awesome super hero patronuses soon.. Yes he had too. She still had Ethan's arm pretty tight She jumped back pretty much in Ethan's lap to get away from them. Fumbling around for her wand, she pulled it from it's holster. She had done a few patronus before, but she was such a failure the last time. She knew Ethan could do them.. He would protect her.. He always protected her... Eyes growing as they swooped in with those horrible hands... DO SOMETHING... Anyone... She felt all the sad getting worse and her brain began to fight just as it did before... Happy.. happy.. stay happy... Professor amazing awesome hurry up and be awesome.. PLEASE.... |
Somehow, Sky had managed to hear Vinteren's instructions. Unfortunately, it was right as one of the things |
SEE!! Look at him standing there all protectively!! She made the right choice standing there with him, out of harms way. He had patronuses and skills and stuff and she had a life she wanted to live. Lex peered around him at the others that were also ordered to get behind him if they could. Well. She wasn't sure there was all that much room but so long as she was the one directly standing by Mr. Vinteren then she didn't really care. She reached for her wand, though she didn't see how much good that would do and held it at ready. Something would happen, eventually. Their hands were reaching out but she knew they wouldn't get by him so she felt completely safe. Even if he didn't care about them he was still gonna protect himself and by doing so he'd protect her too. Geddit? Now to wait for them to be taken care of. |

"EXPECTO. PATRONUM." Moar hippogriffs came spewing out the end of his wand, one going to protect the little boy under the desks, one flying over to circle the Slytherin related to Roxanne Carter, and one swooping over the heads of the Ravenclaw with a Hufflepuff in his lap. No, dementors, that is what we say you today. NO. |
Ethan could still feel the tight grip of his girlfriend's hand on his arm as he clutched his wand and turned his eyes towards Vinteren. But something was different, the Prefect thought in his panicked state. He wasn't keeping them at bay with his herd of hippogriff patronuses. No.. in fact the man seemed much more nervous than the calm and collect he had displayed the last time he had seen him stand up to the creatures. And this only served to increase the panicky feeling rising up in the Prefect's chest. A pained expression fell over his face hearing the scream again.. this one not as distant as the others filtering through his mind, his memories growing dark.. and he clung onto Minerva as she jumped back onto his lap, his green eyes landing on the nearest dementor as it reached out its scabby hand towards them. He desperately tried to hold onto happy thoughts.. the Lake.. the Garden.. as he reached his wand out towards it. He had to protect the girl on his lap.. A movement caught his eye, however, and he glanced up at the silvery hippogriff above him, thankful for his Professor's protection. But recent experience told him that the more patronuses, the better.. especially now that there were more of them. Ethan kept focusing on that one small light of happiness in the cloud of darkness and panic in his mind, until he felt it grew enough to be effective. The Lake.. first kiss.. dancing at the fundraiser.. "Expecto Patronum!" His silvery badger leapt from his wand towards the nearest dementor as he tried desperately to keep holding on to his happy memories. |
Laura took her wand out, seriously she had been wanting to see if her Patronus worked ever since, the first dementor had come near her and now she had a chance, she was glad that she had been working on her patronus. "Expecto Patronum!" Laura thought about all her happy times, she really needed to stay happy, she saw a small butterfly come out of her wand, she was glad her grandparent had taught her how to make a patronus. |
She didn't appreciate what was going on, did anyone? Though, she'd just been threatening in that letter and being all fierce but you see, that was in ink and she was talking to a human being. Not a soul-sucking thingy. The color drained out of her face and she just stared with wide eyes at her desk. Maybe if she didn't look at them she'd be fine and unnoticed. GULP! The Professor was saying something, wands out? The fourth-year reached for her wand in the holster and tightened her grip around it then stumbled out from behind her desk and got closer to the Professor and the people around her. Oh the Professor's patronus was a Hippogriff, in any other occasion if she had found out about that she'd have been extremely impressed. She liked Hippogriffs and wished to ride one. Well, it barely registered now. Instinctively, she backed down and pressed herself against the wall FAR away from the dementors. Maybe they'd actually listen and GO AWAY! And like, they wouldn't notice her. Or Lex....Or her friends. And no, she couldn't think of any happy memories. It just felt like she'd spent her entire life miserably. She knew she didn't but couldn't think of anything happy. Other than getting the heck out of here ALIVE! |

Toby was trying and trying to crawl but he felt himself slowing right down because sad and cold and nuuuuu. He hadn't even reached the professor yet and he was kind of regretting not taking the shoelace express (ie, walking) to get behind Vinteren. His crawling now reduced to a pathetic sad!shuffle, Tobias decided to just stop. There was no point in trying to flee. Instead he stayed under the desks he was at and sat there, hugging his knees to his chest, eyes squeezed shut. He was gonna diiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeee. ... or now. Seeing that bright light he remembered from the night of the fright thingy even through his eyelids, Tobias squinted them open and looked to see what was happening. That was a PATRONUS. He was going to be OKAY. Tobias even felt a little better just seeing the light, as though he could sense the positive energy. What the animal was, he had no idea, but he just stayed where he was, silent and protected. Vinteren was his friend now. |
Asher's heart jumped with pride. His professor had protected them from the Dementors!! He continued to sit, hunched down, behind his desk until the professor gave the all clear. Asher no longer wished for the year to end, he just wanted to know what was going on at Hogwarts. |
When Professor Vinteren told them all to get up and stand behind him with their wands drawn, Dylan did not hesitate to listen. The older man actually looked shook...and that was weird for the Captain. He'd never seen that happen this term...Whenever he'd laid eyes on him, the man had always appeared cool, calm, and collected. Was he.....scared? Springing to his feet, Dylan ran...tugging his wand from it holster as he did so and getting behind the Professor. See? He was totally listening...Was he allowed to cast a Patronus now? He kinda didn't want to, if he were being honest. They'd eaten it last time...and really, that had been scary to him...A patronus wasn't a protection anymore...it was a meal. "Professor..." Dylan spoke in low, quick tones. "...I've seen them eat patronuses...." Was casting a bunch of them now REALLY that smart...? Either way, though... Breathing...Thinking about the Quidditch cup...and the win...and what it felt like to finally beat Alec Summers, the czar or Quidditch...More breathing and focus...Needed to produce a good one...BREATHING.... "Expecto Patronum!" Seeing as he'd had to cast it to so much this term...the Captain was kinda becoming a boss at it...The Raven burst from his wand and joined Professor Vinteren's hippogriffs. Dylan thought, momentarily of course, that a hippogriff said a lot of the Professor...but now wasn't the time to analyse it too much... |
The flock swooped and continued their rattled breathing, almost as if they were excited to sense the patronuses that came towards them. One easily devoured the boa constrictor like is was a noodle. Another devoured the badger. Suck suck suuuuuuuuuuuck and in went the butterfly. Oh, was that a raven again? Second helpings it was for this dementor. Each student patronus made for a lovely appetizer for their sweet little souls... Or not. The herd of silvery hippogriffs pushed the flock backwards, their scabby hands recoiling back into their black cloaks. Messaged received, they allowed themselves to be push out of the History of Magic classroom. FINE. No kissy kissy...for now. |
Minerva watched in horror as the dementors seemed to get closer. Why did this keep happening. She had her hand still gripped on Ethan's arm as she coward in his lap. She felt his arm go around her and she finally let her go of her grip. She was cold and tears had started without her even realizing. Hearing words near her ear she saw the badger for a moment before it was gobbled up. This was just not happening... Why did it keep happening. She just couldn't take anymore and buried her face into Ethan's shoulder. If these things were going to finally get them she wasn't going to watch. Hearing commotion and others doing their patronus she just hoped for the best. Hearing professor awesome's voice she knew if she looked she would see hippogriffs, she really hoped they were attacking the dementors good, but she just was to cold to move. She was just going to stay shivering with her face hidden in Ethan's shoulder. It would be all over soon one way or the other.. She hoped. |
Welp. Ella had been casually scribbling her letter to Beezley, humming quietly to herself as she did and trying not to get distracted by the firsty who was hugging Theo, a very amusing sight. He didn't seem to find it amusing, though. She figured he was still warming up to the whole hugging thing still. And then.... And then..... UGH. Dementors. WHY?! The blonde quickly got behind Vinteren, making sure she had eyes on her badgers, friends, and boyfriend. Everyone was okay, right? And why did this keep happening? And why were they able to just gobble up people's patronus' like it was nothing? WHY? The sixteen year old was feeling very scared and uncomfortable and she just wanted to go back to her dorm now, okay? Could she take her badgers back? Could they go? Was it even safe to? Shudder. |
What....? Eat patronuses? Sky was about to ask what Dylan meant by that, but then received a first-hand demonstration as the dementors first ate her own patronus, then someone's badger, Laura's butterfly and Dylan's raven. Holy crap. They weren't supposed to be able to do that!!!! Which meant that these were some kind of Super!Dementor. Lovely. Just perfect. But then, why weren't they eating Vinteren's patronus? |
The dementors were retreating, although not before making it clear that most patronuses did no good against them. In fact, it seemed to feed them. So the question to Mo, with his big ol' Ravenclaw brain, was what was different about Vinteren's patronus? Why did it work, when no one else's did? Mo found his wand was out in his hand, which was a comfort. At least he tried to fight back, even if he'd never produced a corporeal patronus. He holstered his wand and scooted toward the big scary professor. "Professor? Why don't they eat your patronus too?" |
