The beginning of term was upon them and even though the first week or so had already passed and everyone was practically settled in, the first Divination lesson of the term had yet to happen. Today was the day though and the trapdoor to the classroom was open and the ladder was lowered.
Professor Elwood sat excitedly at her desk by the chalkboard awaiting the students. The room was set up like it usually was, a few seats around little tables among the risers; the windows opened up to allow what slight breeze there was to flow in. What other point was there to be in a tower classroom?
The cutbacks the rest of the Castle seemed to be having didn't seem to have effected this room, at least on the surface. Go ahead and take a seat while you wait for the Professor to start the lesson.
**The lesson has now STARTED. If you post your student entering now it will result in a POINTS LOSS. If you'd like to join, just rp your character as if they've been there the whole time.
Reading tea leaves? Susan didn't know you could do that. Did the leaves make words that you just read out loud or did was it something you had to interpret. Susan listened to the other students answer and figured out it was shaped you had to interpret. Hmmm..."Professor Elwood, how do you know what the shapes in tea leaves mean?" That wasn't a stupid question right?

This was one of the lessons she had been looking forward to ever since starting Hogwarts.
She didn't know much about Divination, but that was the point. She didn't need to know anything! It was all a bunch of guessing, lying and making things up, at least, in her opinion it was, and after hearing the very first question of the lesson, Rhodes knew she was going to do GREAT. How was the Professor supposed to know she was making things up anyway!? Easy. Lesson.
Hand up in the air, she listened to what everyone else had to say before her and gave a shake of her head. They didn't say the most obvious answer. None of them did! She was going to sound SO smart, she was. "Tea Leaf Reading is a type of Divination." So smart.

Tea leaf reading...right.
Rich knew he did not know much about Divination despite the fact that he had participated in some classes about it. Actually, he knew some but those were all theory, he had never really gave his full concentration on the work when it was performed. It was either because his mind had been busy with other things or he did not have much faith in this subject. He was not sure. He had heard about things that the art of divination managed to foretell though.
Maybe this time, the Slytherin thought, he would be able to pay attention and learn all the details about it and see if it really works himself. His gray eyes blinked at the professor as the other students told one by one what they knew about reading tea leaves. ''I heard it can be done with coffee too.'' Yeah...and nothing more.

Nigel took a big yawn before answering the question. Why did this class always seem to make him so sleepy. Maybe it was the room and where it was. But Nigel knew for sure it had nothing to do with Professor Elwood. That much was certain.
"You read the tea leaf to interpret patterns in them. For the future, love and what not. "
Nigel had to do somerhing to keep himself awake. He did not want a stream of water shooting in his face like that one time. He started to pinch himself under his robes to try. But it did not seem to be working . Well maybe daydreaming would work.

Reason: grammar
Taylor raised her hand, "You drink the tea then you look at the dregs, deciphering them?" She wasnt sure if that was what the teacher was asking but it was worth the shot, wasnt it? Tay shifted in her chair and twisted a curl around her finger while looking around the room for one face in particular then pouted when she didnt see him. Taylor glanced back at the teacher.

Tea readings. What did she know about tea readings? Welllll...
Anya raised her hand. "You need loose tea leaves." None of that bagged stuff. "And it has to be good tea. Otherwise the person won't drink nearly all of it."
And you couldn't do a tea reading if it was still swirling around the bottom in liquid.
Plus... this kind of gave her an excuse to not participate if the tea was bad, right?

SPOILER!!: Greetings and replies
"Hello there dear. I did have a good summer, thanks for asking." The blonde watched the Ravenclaw take a seat after giving her a quick smile.
The next student to enter the classroom was a boy, much older than a first year but he was not someone she recognized. Had he just not taken Divination until this term? "Good morning, how are--"
O__O What?
Calista was a tad taken aback by the 'lovely' comment; the boy knew she was an adult AND his Professor right? "Well, um thank you, but a simple good morning would probably be best." he cheeks were a bit red but she did smile politely at him.
It was a compliment regardless.
"Welcome back Miss Bishop, my summer was nice yes. I hope Tryouts are going alright?" The Divination Professor greeted the Quidditch Captain as she chose her seat.
"Hello Alexa." Callie didn't quite catch what the Gryffindor had said right after her initial greeting but it didn't seem like she was meant to really. The blonde smiled at her anyways and answered her last question. "I did, although it was spent trying to come up with some ideas for what to do with Divination on an even tighter budget than before. We will manage though."
"Hello there! I did, was you're summer nice?" Professor Elwood beamed brightly to the excited, young Gryffindor. It was nice to see enthusiasm from such younglings.
Oh if it wasn't the sleepy Ravenclaw. "Good day Mr. Barrington. Welcome back." She nodded politely as she watched him take a seat.
The next student to enter the room was a small, out-of-breath Hufflepuff who looked to be a first year. "Hello dear, welcome. And don't worry, you will get used to the stairs." She nodded. The Puffs weren't as well off as the Gryffindors or Ravenclaws but they still had a level up on the Slytherins on the distance from the Divination tower.
"Hi there!" Professor Elwood greeted the next Gryffindor to enter the classroom and watched her as she took a seat.
"Beezus, it's good to see you again too. Was you're summer nice?" Elwood greeted the girl fondly with her nickname, the one the Prefect had taken to writing on her homework assignments. She had always been a good Divination student in the past and it was nice to see her back after her OWL performance.
Callie recognized the next face too. "Welcome back Miss Carter-Hope." Elwood greeted the quiet Slytherin as she took her seat.
"I did, thank you Miss Eventide! Did your's treat you well?" The Divination Professor greeted the Ranveclaw brightly.
"Hello Mr. Odessa." Callie smiled politely at the young, tired Snake but quickly darted her eyes at the trapdoor behind him to see if his older sister was pulling up the rear. She hadn't graduated yet had she? It was possible.
"Hello Jory, it's good to see you too. Are you excited for this term?" She knew he probably was for the Divination lessons since he was such a good student in the subject, but she had no idea what he liked outside of this classroom.
"Hello Minerva! Welcome back!" She smiled brightly as the Hufflepuff first greeted her. "Yes my summer was nice but I did actually miss you all." So in a way she was ready to come back but vacation was vacation. Her return would have just been nicer had she not had to deal with cut-backs.
The new Ravenclaw male Prefect was the next to enter the class and Calista was happy that he came up to greet her. "Hello Ethan, the plant is doing excellently up here in the tower." He would have to stop by again soon to check on it for himself.
"Welcome back Miss Dawnsel." Calista smiled at the Ravenclaw as she entered the classroom and found herself a seat.
Marcus Branxton, the boy's mother was working so hard to try and make these cut-backs as painless as possible. Bless that woman, she couldn't say the same for all the members of the Board though.
Professor Professor? "Elwood." The blonde smiled brightly at the boy. "And good day to you too Mr. Branxton. Glad to see you've decided to continue with Divination this term."
"Hello Captain Fischer." Elwood greeted the Gryffindor as she quickly made her way to a seat.
"Welcome, and hello to you too." Professor Elwood grinned brightly at the new Slytherin.
"Hi there." Calista smiled at the Gyrffindor and watched as she took a seat. It was about time to start the lesson soon.
A rather chipper Ravenclaw was next to enter the class. "It is a nice day, isn't it? Good to see you again Miss Johanson."
"Hello, hello." The girl seemed pretty excited for the upcoming lesson and that was promising. Callie was glad to have young students ready to take the place of the avid, older students who will graduate one day soon.
"Good day Miss Llywelyn." Elwood greeted the young blonde girl. She had mentioned before that she was from a community well-learned in the Divining Arts so Callie was glad that the girl had signed up for SNAC this term, she may have some interesting things to add.
"Good day to you too. Welcome back." The Professor greeted the snake as she watched her take a seat.
"Hello dear, welcome." The girl was a new student and it was exciting that she had chosen Divination as one of her subjects for her first term.
"Hello Mr. Kinsley, let's not fall asleep now, deal?" She grinned at the young Snake. She understood the stress of a new term and all the classes but she really didn't want to have to call anyone out for sleeping during her lesson.
Was the girl in the right class?
Callie couldn't help but notice the confused look on the new Gryffindor's face as she entered the classroom and walked right past her and then thought about it before greeting her. "Hello dear, welcome." All smiles.
The next girl didn't seem confused, just shy. "Hello dear, welcome to Hogwarts." She was a new Ravenclaw, one of the ones she had noticed at the Sorting Ceremony.
"Hello there." Professor Elwood smiled politely at the Slytherin as he entered the classroom and took a seat.
"Hello Mr. Gunter. Congratulations on the Head Boy position." It was really an honor and the Hufflepuff should be proud. She was also glad that he had made the effort to attend today, the boy was not often gracing her lessons with his presence.
"I did Miss Hyde, thanks for asking." Professor Elwood watched the Hufflepuff take her seat.
"Welcome, welcome." Professor Elwood gladly greeted the new Ranveclaw and watched as she looked around the room, taking in her surroundings. Her classroom was definitely one of the more interesting and creative ones in the Castle, at least in her opinion.
Another new Prefect!
"Hello Miss Hudson, a see congratulations are also in order for you. I'm sure you will make Slytherin house proud." Professor Elwood nodded at the blonde as she took her seat.
And then the new Head Girl was next. "Head Girl Dixon. Glad to see that badge on the robes of someone with a head on their shoulders." Not that the last one didn't, it was just an expression, right? "Welcome back." The blonde smiled at her as she moved towards the trapdoor.
Now that the tables were filling up and the clock was about to strike the hour she had planned for the lesson to begin, it was time to close the trapdoor and get things started. The Professor stood up from her seat and flicked her wand at the door, slowly closing it.
"It looks like we are all here, so let's go ahead and begin. Welcome to Divination, and welcome back for those of you returning. I am excited to see many new faces and for those people, I should introduce myself. My name is Professor Elwood and I will be your guide on the amazing journey that is Divination." She clasped her hands together, setting her bangles off into their usual jingling fury.
Continuing. "For those of you who have taken my lessons before today will remember that I've tried my best to give you all a well-rounded view of the Noble Art, rather than the mainstream practices we all are acquainted with. Today, though I've decided that, although it can be considered mainstream, the activity we will be doing is one I've decided is something all good Diviners should have in their pockets." Not literally though because that could be disastrous and messy.
"So what can you all tell me about Tea Leaf Reading?" She grinned excitedly at the faces looking up at her.

Mika beamed to Professor Elwood. She was nice, she liked nice people. And she had made them do fun tasks in class before - and tea leaf reading was kind of fun wasn't it? Mika listened to some of the answers the other students gave before coming up with her own idea - well important insight into Tasseography and Tasseomancy. They were in fact, the same thing.
Raising her hand she gave the best answer she could without giving away too many details.
"Its a form of divinations and as Alice said its commonly refered to as Tasseomancy - an interesting predicament though with it is that it is very hard and almost impossible to read tea leaves if you don't use loose leaf tea...not to mention ripping a tea bag in half to get the leaves into the cup kind of is a messy ordeal." BAM!knowledge.

Thank Merlin this class was on something he read about in his Divination Textbook and not on some crazy new form of Fortune Telling like throwing sticks and looking at foot prints. "Like Rich had mentioned it could be done with Coffee grinds, it could also be done with Wine sediments as well" He wasn't sure how, but hey that's what this class was for right? To learn the art of Divination.

Tag assumed they would be drinking tea for class now? Most likely yes. And the professor wanted to know something that her students knew about tea leaf reading. "Isn't it Professor, whatever is left of the tea leafs in the person's cup, an image or something? And they look up that image and it holds some sort of value or meaning to the person that the cup belongs to?" That was the jest, right? An, that was as much as Tag knew from the top of his head.

Tea leaf reading!... is tricky. At least that’s what she remembers when the Priestesses would speak about this amongst themselves. But what can she say about this? The young one raises her hand... because it seems like that’s what kids from Hogwarts do “The form the tea leaves make isn’t the only aspect to consider during a reading, its also quite important to take note of the position of where the leaves form in the cup, if its near the handle or away from it or if its by the rim or the bottom of the cup.”

Kommoto shook his head in disbelief. All these people so eager to shout out answers. Well, if they wanted to do that, he'd be happy to take them. He began to copy down all the answers the professor said were right. This was so easy.

Dylan smiled at everyone because really, he had no reasons not to. It was a great day...and he'd gotten real sleep. So, he was in the best spirits. And Professor Elwood looked extra pretty today. So, that was a plus.
He looked around the room momentarily, searching for her face...and grinned when he spotted her. School uniforms or not, the Ravenclaw always looked so beautiful...
Dreamy sigh...
Oh. Tea leaf reading...Right.
"It's not exactly the most accurate Divination practice, is it?" The Slytherin cut his eyes to the Professor. "I mean...what I think is a grim...could be someone else's goat. It's all very 'open to interpretation'."

As other people filed into the classroom, Kaiden allowed himself to get mor comfortable. He leaned back in his chair, still ready to learn, just not sitting up super straight. When the professor began with the usual greeting and introduction he let his legs stretch out a bit under the table. When his foot hit someone else's he sort of smirked. Well, helloooo Miks' foot.
Tea leaf reading? The reluctant Hufflepuff scrunched up his face thinking. yeah, he didn't really know anything about that, so he raised his hand and said the only thing that came to his mind. "You uh, drink tea, and look at the leaves?" As he talked, he let his foot nudge against the one under the table once more.

As Kace was out of breath and sat down in his poofy chair, he saw and heard the professor greeting him. "Hello Professor and i hope i get used to them, i hate sweating in my robes." he said while tugging at his tie to make it loose.
After he greeted the professor, he heard the prof starting the lesson. So they were doing Tea Leaf readings huh? Kace had NO idea what they were about but he got the jist from his sister. He might as well raise his hand, "Professor doesn't Tea Leaves predict one's fate? Like i heard the grim can predict death?""
From her seat, Peyton's hand ZOOMED into the air, her face breaking into a grin. "Tea Leaf Reading, or as it's also referred to, Tasseography, is the study of reading leaves in a cup. I don't think it matters what tea or cup you use, right, Professor?" she asked. Peyton sent Professor Elwood an EXTRA special smile.
Why?
Because she was among Peyton's favorite professors. She even still had the hat the woman had given her last term.

"Yes I am, Professor!'' Jory replied with a grin. "One of the reasons being Divination.''
Tea Leaf Reading? Jory blinked. Tea Leaf Reading! Something he always wanted to do! What a topic for the first lesson. Immediately, he raised his hand. "It involves looking at the "image" of the dregs left at the bottom of someone's cup after they've drunk the tea. The image allows us to interpret that image to predict the future.''

Mo settled into his seat and watched the professor with great interest. It was a topic of interest to her, considering reasons, and Mo propped up his chin on his fists and gazed at the professor. Sort of adoringly, okay? Just sort of.
And then someone was nudging at his feet, and Mo glanced 'round at Mika. This was NOT the time for flirting, although he appreciated the effort. She got a big grin before he turned his attention back to the professor.
"My mum read tea leaves," Mo pronounced and he managed not to glare at the people who were bad mouthing it. "And the way she does it, she drinks the tea with loose leaves in it, and when she gets to the bottom, she drains the liquid straight into the saucer and leaves just the damp leaves inside the cup. And yeah, I guess maybe a bird is an owl is a flying shoe sometimes, but that's why someone has Sight and knows the difference."

Ooooh. Did the Professor just call her by her nickname? That was....new. It made her feel...weird. She might've even blushed a bit. Most Professors went by her formal name, Beatrice. Probably the last adult at Hogwarts who went by her nickname was Professor Jenkins, whom she was VERY fond of. Guess this means she was growing fond of their Divination Professor too.
She smiled brightly at the woman and replied. "Summer was.....a mixture of a lot.....of things, Professor....Callie." SHECANCALLHERPROFESSORCALLIERIGHT?! And...she didn't want to elaborate more on how her summer really went so she bowed at the woman before proceeding to take a seat.
Tea Leaf Reading.
Her peers had shared a lot already and Beezus mostly had the same idea so instead of being repetitive, she chose to listen as her classmates spoke. She also went ahead and wondered what tea they'll be drinking today....'cause they will surely be doing an activity on it, right?

Today, though I've decided that, although it can be considered mainstream, the activity we will be doing is one I've decided is something all good Diviners should have in their pockets." Not literally though because that could be disastrous and messy.
"So what can you all tell me about Tea Leaf Reading?" She grinned excitedly at the faces looking up at her.
Oh, it was time to start? Awesome!
Grinning, Alec back in his seat slightly , his eyes on the blonde woman at the front of the class. He was so going to pay attention in this class and hopefully not get confused with anything the woman was talking about. This was more or less his plan for the rest of the term since he was starting to maybe take a liking to the subject. Maybe.
It had something to do with the Tarot cards last term, he was sure of it.
... Tea leaf reading... what did he know about tea leaf reading that wasn't something the others had mentioned? "Erm... Professor? Isn't it important for the person whose future will be read to be the person drinking the tea?" He... wasn't sure why it was important but apart from the obvious answers and the ones the others had given, that was the only thing he could think of.

Blegh. Tea leaves. Which meant drinking the tea the British way instead of the American. Sky hated drinking tea the British way, if she had to drink it at all (normally she would avoid tea altogether). Though, one student mentioning that you could read coffee grounds too got her attention. Please, professor, could we do that instead? Anyway, she discreetly skimmed through her textbook for something different to say and quickly found it. "Some tea readers prefer using leaves from certain countries." She wondered if that applied to coffee too. If so, then French roast for her, please.

This class was not going to be favourite of his at all. The only consolation was the Professor seemed really nice. And he really had no idea about divination but he had heard of tea leaf reading. So it was with somewhat confidence that Michael raised his hand to answer the question. "Tea leaf reading is a form of fortune telling." An imprecise form but he wasn't about to voice that out loud.

Theo DID know this. He must know this, since it was pretty simple. But nothing was coming to him, as flipping usual. He frowned slightly at himself, the lesson, and everyone in the room. He put his hand up, though, just because whenever he just ignored a question, that was where he often fell behind.
"It can tell the future."
REALLY? WOW.

Tea Leaf Reading?
....................... Is something that seers like doing? Juliet was especially not fond of this kind of divination because everything about it is just hard. Juliet did raise her hand to answer "People use the tea leaves to predict the future of the one who owns it" which is really odd because how would one really predict the outcome of his future just by looking at weird looking tea leaves.

A beam. Yes, Kat beamed at Professor Elwood. "Thank you, Professor," the prefect said to the older blonde. See? Told you Professor Elwood was awesome. Anyway... class was about to start. Kat sat straight and listened to the professor speak.
So... tea leaf reading. Kat remembered reading this before in her textbook.
The Slytherin raised her hand up to answer. "Like what the others said, tea leaf reading is called Tessomancy," Kat said. "When you read tea leaves, the reader might be able to see symbols and each symbol has a different meaning about the future." That seemed like it. There.
