Defense Against the Dark Arts Lesson 1 - NEAR THE LAKE
It was a pleasant day outside despite the slow dropping temperatures of the upcoming season. The mid-day sun was shining high and bright while the breeze was lightly blowing, making the day too good to ignore. The lake sparkled in the background and the merry songs of the birds as they flew from tree to tree gave the area both a tranquil atmosphere and well needed change of view. Purple mats were lined up in rows as they usual were in the dueling arena, though perhaps one could notice the absence of the short desks if they'd attended a lesson before. Professor Romanos was seated upon her own burgundy colored mat, smile as clear as day on her face as she waited for the students to show. Hopefully they weren't too confused on where to go. She did put up a sign both on the classroom and arena doors instructing them to head down to the grounds near the lake.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
The tree position. Jory was more familiar with this one. He wriggled his toes a bit then shifted his weight to his left foot then raised his right one and rested it on his left inner thigh, just as Professor Romanos instructed. Speaking of the Professor. She sniffled and sneezed again. He felt sorry for her. And the other students.
Back to the lesson. No one had actually seen a Boggart, had they? he knew they were non beings. "Do they look like ghosts, perhaps?'' he asked, his hand in the air. As for how they came into the world, Jory had no idea.

Theo was having a hard time holding his breath with all these germs floating around him. He wanted to escape, if only the lesson wasn't an interesting one. He wanted to learn about boggarts and stuff. He made a small groaning noise when the positions started, but awkwardly formed the 'tree' shape, wobbling everywhere.
"They could be invisible monsters. As in... ugly but invisible." Ghosts wasn't the exact word he would use, but definitely something similar.
Wibblewobble.
He tried his hardest to put it to the back of his mind, but Theo could feel himself trying to sniff. It was definitely a trick of the mind, what with all these sick people around him, but he was not going to let it control him. He just really wanted to go to the bathroom and disinfect himself. Also, he did need to pee.

Oh jeez, Orr thought as she sneezed loudly and woobled in her yoga position before resuming her balance. Was she also getting sick?!
And what was the question asked? Oh okay. How was going to answer the question while in this position? She couldn't raise her hand like she always did in class. Maybe...
"Um...Professor? They probably were born out of our own superstitions and fears and maybe they don't actually exist in concrete terms--maybe they are only created when we fear something. Oh that sounds silly I know-- not such a 'Claw answer I suppose."

Garrick furrowed his brow as he attempted to balance his weight on one leg... Uhhhh. Redic. After several moments, and a few near falls, he finally got himself centered and into the tree pose as directed. Hmmmm. This yoga business was for the BIRDS.
With a small smile in place he spoke up, "Perhaps they are like... blobs of goo. Like... they are waiting to mould into whatever form they are going to take." And as for how they came to be... "And as for their existing in our world... I reckon they were created by something or someone." Seemed legit to him.
Wobbling slightly he turned his head to see how Lotus was faring with this yoga stuff. She was probably all graceful and stuff. Girls.
Boggarts, boggarts, boggarts. Shame Forrest didn't have much idea about them, except that they apparently lived with fears of people and they didn't have a definite shape. Forrest wanted to see one now, actually. They WOULD get to see one, yes? Yes?
Copying the position of professor easily benefits of football schools day and night he juuuust breathed out and tried to make something out of what he'd heard about boggarts so far.
Ahem. "While you are hopefully balancing..." Sniffle."...Let's talk about boggarts for a moment. Does anyone have any theories on what they look like when alone? Or perhaps how they came to be in this world?"
Annabeth was trying hard to do that Laughter Yoga unsuccessfully. She had trouble keeping her balance and, at the same time, was distracted by the sparkling lake. What can this have to do with the DADA lessons? But remaining wordless wouldn't be a good idea, the teacher hadn't noticed her presence until then. She raised her hand and almost fell. Sure! Everyone was talking without leaving the yoga position, she should do the same. "Professor, I was reading about boggarts in some books and I imagine a boggart as a cloud of nano-elements which is activated in order to combine themselves taking a form when it noticed someone's feelings."I hope it hadn't been a big mistake to say it aloud. People could laugh at her for her sharing her delirious theory.
Clearing her throat a little, she relaxed her posture and rubbed her nose more. She was going for a record timing in keeping this sneezing business down. "Alright, you can relax, everyone. We'll be moving into something called the tree pose. And yes, I'm quite aware it doesn't look like a tree, but I don't make up the titles." She chuckled lightly before slowly moving into the position. "You may want to balance most of your weight on her left leg first before resting your right foot on your inner thigh."
She was going to have to step out of it momentarily though.

As Tanner held the pose and tried to clear her mind, she hear other kids sniffling and sneezing a bit too. Oh, God, was something going around? Should she be wearing a mask? Should doctors come in and take blood samples? Wait, she hated needles. Never mind on the blood samples.
Yay, professor lady allowed them to relax! What was so comforting abou yoga anyway? It was like standing in place and breathing. She did that every day of her life. If you counted the laying down pose, then she litterally did that in her sleep. It didn't seem like rocket science.
...................
Okay, she was starting to take this back. The tree pose (which totally didn't look anything like a tree) actually required things like blancing. She'd call the class when she actually HAD notable corrdination.
Sighing and quietly ommmmming to herself, Tanner somehow ended up in the pose. Well, sort of. Depends on what you meant by 'in the pose.'
Also, Boggarts? She knew nothing about them. Well, Nate had told her SOME stuff, but nothing really notable. No matter. Someone had to say the obvious. Tanner raised her right hand and almost fell over. Timmmmmber, she wanted to yell.
"Umm, aren't Boggarts just projections of peoples fears?" Wow, that actually sounded kind of smart. For and ickle firsty of course. "Like if you were afraid of spiders, it would be a spider?" And there the smartness went.

Tree Pose.
Ella could handle that, sort of. It took her a few times to get the balancing act right but once she did, the blonde prayed she wouldn't sneeze or anything. That would be disaster.
As for boggarts, Ella shuddered a bit as she thought of what they might look like on their own. "Professor, perhaps they are like a mist or fog, able to immediately transform themselves into whatever fear they need to at a moments notice." Wild guess was wild but she really had no idea. From what she'd read, no one knew for sure what a boggart actually looked like when alone. And the blonde was even more unsure of how they came about but she chanced a guess, "Could they have been a creation of a dark witch or wizard, Professor?"
Haruka lowered her hands into a praying position in front of her chest, and lifted her leg to cross the other in imitation of the Professor's yoga pose.
'What a boggart looks like?' Haruka mused to herself. She'd never really thought of it before. "Maybe they're just darkness that takes form when one comes in contact with a human?"
Susan was wondering why so many people were sneezing. Something must be in the air that didn't effect Susan because she wasn't sneezing at all. Susan then tried to go into the "Tree Pose" while keeping her balance. Oh this one is going to be fun Susan thought. She didn't have the best balance when both her feet were on the ground, she knew with only one it could be disastrous.
Susan's grandmother had told her about boggarts a few years back. So Sue kind of knew what they were, but she couldn't quite remember everything her grandmother had told her. "Nobody really knows what a boggart looks like when it is alone." Susan was positive that is what her grandmother said to her. "Umm...but I am not sure how they came about." Sue knew her grandmother told her something about that but for the life of her she just couldn't remember.
Laura looked at the Professor and raised her hand. "Maybe A Bogart was create by the Dark Lord to destroy the world or maybe Captain Kirk brought him back from another planet." Laura wasn't sure but it was worth a guess and then she went onto trying the pose.
Laura wasn't really good at balancing on one leg and she knew she was going down. "TIMBER!!!!!!!!" Laura said as she fell down, well wasn't that what you said when a tree fell, she didn't want to hurt something, she then looked up from her spot on the ground, she was sure she had hurt her wrist.

Well Susan was actually doing an ok job at this "Tree Pose" thing. She only had to hold her hands out twice so far. Susan looked over at Laura and noticed she was having some difficulty staying up also. OH NO!! Sue watched with wide horrified eyes as Laura fell. Susan quickly put both feet on the ground to see if she was ok. Susan knelt down next to Laura to get a closure inspection of any damage done. "Laura, oh my gosh, are you ok? Did you hurt anything?"

Ezra imitated the easiness which Professor Romanos possessed with this... yoga thing. He imitated her or at least he tried to, and when he tried to tuck his right foot to his thigh, he stumbled sideways, nearly crashing into Edita.
He felt like his face was on fire, and the apologetic look he shot Edita wasn't really at Edita but at her shoulder. Ezra tried again, this time more or less managing to get it right.
Sort of. He was swaying on the spot, a little bit. "Uhm, I'd imagine they don't take any shape at all." If they did, someone WOULD have figured out a way to see said shape, right? "Maybe when they're alone they take the shape the boggart itself fears the most?" Whatever that was. What could fear itself be afraid of? "Maybe that's why they prey on us. Maybe by taking the shape of someone else's biggest fear, boggarts get to pretend they don't fear anything at all." A pause - a necessary pause. Ezra lowered his foot for a moment, then lift it back up again. "Or maybe they don't exist at all, not unless there's a human around. Maybe they live in a constant state of... not really living." Hmm. "It sounds very awful but maybe it's a little bit fair, too."
Nigel really wanted to ask if there was anything wrong with Professor Romanos. But since she was continuing the lesson. Nigel guesses that it was not bad enough.
Okay, now onto the next yoga stance. He brought his leg up and crossed it. The he tried to balance most of his weight on his left leg first. Once he accomplished that he start to rest his right foot on his inner thigh. He of course brought down and rested his hands.
Now to the question. Nigel never really thought about what a boggart looks like when they are alone.
"Wouldn't they be like a shape shifter or just something corporeal that changes to somebodies fear."
Nigel was just guessing. It really was a mystery

Oh they were changing positions?
Lex lowered her hands and raised her right leg. Not so bad...ish...didn't help that she still had that slight bounce. The fact that it persisted so long told her that it wasn't only the excitement of DADA class that had her so hyper. Just how much candy did she have before coming here anyway? Huh...she couldn't remember...
She stopped trying to figure this out when another question was asked. Did this mean they were allowed to think again.
She'd assume so.
"I think they'd probbaly look like a blob, a blob ready to assume the shape of anything...kinda like playdoe...that you just squish and make into anything you want? Yeah. Like that."
Lex took a moment to regain balance after tipping over and nearly falling, possibly she might have taken Lottie down with her so it was good she got her balance at the last minute. "As for how they came about, I think it could be a manifestation of fear itself. Picture it, little Timmy's left with his stupid older cousins while his parents are out. They shut all the lights off and start making creepy noise--poor Timmy wets himself, scared out of his senses and that fear slowly takes on qualities of living things because it's so great, pretty soon it's going around scaring other children senseless following the same technique as little Timmy's cousins," see why idiots should be locked in cages? They gave monsters ideas, "And now there's big numbers of them because he spread." Nodnodnod.
WHOA!!
This time she did lose her balance and toppled right to the floor. Ow..."I'm okay." Owwww...

They were changing to the Tree Pose. That wasn't so hard now, was it? It required balance. And she did have balance. She was a Quidditch player, after all. Wouldn't be able to stay on the broom high up in the air chasing quaffles around if she didn't.
And this sneezing business was proving to be really contagious. She had started sniffling that she rubbed her nose first before doing the next yoga stunt. Okay....shifting her weight on her left leg and other foot up. Barely managing.....but still, she was managing. But wait, there was a question, right? Yes, about boggarts. .....Ugh. Why did it have to be boggarts? Her mind instantly went back to the horrific images she'd come across at the maze during her OWLs. She didn't want to remember any of it so she quickly shook her head in an attempt to shake off those thoughts likewise. It didn't work so instead of giving out an answer, the brunette used up her time to clear her mind off of things.

Aaaaaand Jory had noticed her fall. Well, of course he did. He was standing right next to her and she had yelled quite loudly. The whole class must have seen. Or, at least heard.
She smiled at Jory as he helped her up. "Thank you," she said with a small nod. "And I'm totally fine, nothing bruised or scratched." she continued as she brushed off her robes. She then turned her attention back to the professor. Hopefully the red in her cheeks would go away soon.

She blushed slighty and waved a hand. "Nah, I'm fine professor. No worries, just lost my balance for a second there but I'm not hurt." she said with a small nod.

....another pose? And this one seemed more complicated than the first. Oh boy, hopefully she wouldn't fall again. She doubted she wouldn't though. Ronnie was awfully clumsy. Mehh. But she'd try real hard to stay in balance this time. She did NOT want to embarass herself like that again in front of Jory. Or the professor. Or just everyone there.
Carefully, Ronnie lifted her right leg and rested her foot on her left inner thigh. She wobbled a bit but kept her balance, and listened as the professor asked about boggarts. Oh! Ronnie knew! Ronnie knew! She cleared her throat before she spoke. "Well, since a boggart is like a non-being, wouldn't appear maybe like a little misty orb or... or like a ghosty looking figu- Woa-whoooaa!" she wobbled and tipped over onto the ground again.
Ugh. How many bloody times was all this going to happen today?! She stood up and wiped all the grass off her robes and sighed. She then got back into position, making sure to be VERY careful.
Her balance wasn't as great as she'd hoped. but she could tell it was a lot better than it had been last year. It must be due to all of the Quidditch practice. And at least her balance was better than that Gryffindor girl's. Was her name...Ronnie? That poor girl had fallen on her face, so at least Eliza had stayed vertical, with her hands reaching to the sky. She had tried to let her mind go blank but she simply couldn't manage it. Her thoughts raced from one to the other and as soon as she'd thought she'd mellowed out, she realized she was just obsessing about the wind or the song of that bird in the distance.
And then...oh. That happened. She didn't look at Min, so as not to make it any more embarrassing. She was sure it would happen to everyone at school at some point eventually though. It was just a thing that happened sometimes. Especially when you were doing yoga and stuff like that. She smirked at Ethan when he bravely protected his lady's honor.
Glad to have a new position, she slowly lifted one leg and brought her arms down, palms together in front of her chest. She wobbled slightly from being on one foot, but quickly found her center. Hopefully we don't have to try to laugh in this post because then I will definitely fall over.
She thought hard about the boggart's true form, but she really didn't know. In fact, she didn't think anyone knew. But she gave it a shot anyway. "Well, I guess it's anyone's best guess unless someone who was truly fearless saw one - but then again, maybe that person just wouldn't see anything at all. And where they came from, I don't really know either, but I'd have to agree with Lex - maybe it's just a manifestation of fear itself, but how it gained the ability to take a physical form...well maybe that came from a dark spell, or an innocent one gone wrong." She knew that could happen sometimes.
Oh dear! "Miss Hawkins! Are you alright?" Goodness...
Lack of reflexes, that one.
That was certainly an interesting question. One she unfortunately didn't have a very good answer for. "I'm afraid I'm unfamiliar with the animagi transformation process, Mister Montmorency, so I'm unable to really say." She smiled apologetically. "If this is something you're really interested in finding out about though, we can talk more after class about it."
...
And then that happened.
Perhaps it was best to move on? Yes, some distracting questions!
Oh goodness. "Mister Yammoto?" Her eyebrows knitted together a little as she watched him. "Are you alright?"
Clearing her throat a little, she relaxed her posture and rubbed her nose more. She was going for a record timing in keeping this sneezing business down. "Alright, you can relax, everyone. Mika just stood there and relaxed her position as she watched the Professor sneez again. She really wanted to hand her a tissue but she couldn’t even more without her nose twitching and tingling like some kind of spidy-sense. “Bleh-achooo” yep. That was brilliant.
As Professor Romanos sniffled and sneezed at the front of the class Mika just stood there her eyes watering. She watched how the position changed and tried to mimic it. Raising her leg and hooking it behind her knee she stood upwards and tried to raise her hand.
Instead she ended up raising both into the air and leaned them on the top of her head for balance purpose. She just wiggled her fingers to catch Professor Romano’s eye. Once she had she spoke. “Ah-achoo” she blinked, “are they like dementors?” She offered, “because they could be grey and scaly and kind of creepy looking on their own but instead of having a cloth-like thing about them they could wear I don’t know…a mist like fog” she wiggled and caught more balance.
“Um I’m going to go and expand on what Aurora said” she muttered, “the boggarts are everyone’s fears – but wizards aren’t the only ones who fear…muggles have fear as well, they call the creepy-critters in the night boogey men.” She bit her lip, “could they come into being because of the fear and imagination of not only young muggles but young wizards and witches as well?” She asked as she tried to continue balancing with the tree pose.

Ugh. Why did it have to be boggarts?? She did not like those things! After her OWLs and the maze she doubted she could ever remove the horrific images from her mind. She had barely been able to cast the spell to get rid of the thing.

Relax.
Thank Merlin.
Penelope went flat footed again and dropped her arms, shifting her shoulders a bit in an attempt to get the blood properly flowing down them again. They had been starting to feel all weird after awhile of holding them in the air. She wrinkled her nose when it became apparent they had to do another pose though...and this one looked much harder. So...yeah, she was just gonna try balancing on her left foot before doing...whatever that was with her right one.
Extending her arms out on either side in an attempt to maintain her balance on just one foot, she listened as they were also apparently going to continue talking about boggarts.
Erm...did she still have to raise her hand to speak? Instead, with her arms still out to keep her balance, she bent her arm at the elbow so that her hand was kinda sorta up. She wobbled slightly on her foot as she did so, but that would have to do. "Maybe they don't look like anything at all?" she suggested. "Like they don't really have a body they just...are formless somehow or something. Since there's no one around for them to scare and that's sorta their main goal or whatever." Seemed like a decent guess. That was basically all she was doing with this entire answer. "And maybe they came about from a spell going wrong or something? Or a potion? Maybe something that was supposed to help with fear, and then it just went wrong and reacted with something else and a boggart was created?"
And then her arm went straight again because she was wobbling on her foot a lot. Merlin help her. The next pose needed to come soon and require less balancing.

Okay..next position.
Amara tried to balance her whole weight, which wasn't much, on her left leg. She swayed a bit as she tried. Easy, easy. Concentrate girl. Once done she moved her right leg and...
STAGGER.
Gah. This was unbelievable. Why were they doing all this? Skip this part and go to the spells! Muttering she tried the position again.
Left leg..balance...right leg over..alright.
Talk about boggarts?
She had been so immersed in trying not to fall that she didn't hear what was going on. How the boggart looked? Merlin knows.
"UH...maybe the boggart looks like something it fears the most!!" she said, excited, and still trying to stay in the position. She'd never really thought about how boggarts looked. Now that they had, it was reasonable that they feared something. "They must have some fear right..maybe they change to what they fear...or maybe" she paused, "Maybe they change into something terrible as before" OKAY. That didn't make sense.
"I'm saying..they might have changed to something fearful for someone else, while alone maybe the boggart would take the most fearful shape it had ever donned" There two possibilities, within the same position. Heh.

He eyed a few of the culprits and casually hopped a few times backwards to make sure he wasn't in the line of fire.

Hmm.. What a topic. Wade had been a little quiet on this, having remembered his encounter with one over the summer. He was distracted by the next position they had to hold. Deep breath..
In... As Wade inhaled, he gradually lift his right leg before- Out... Exhaling as he folded his right leg resting it against his inner left thigh. What did they look like alone? Hmm.. He kept the breathing naturally as he rose one hand. "Maybe.. it starts as what the boggart itself fears.." Probably should explain more there, Wade. "Since they take on the fear of anyone who faces it, it could be the same when it has no one but itself to face."
A tree pose? Sonea grinned and wondered who had come up with those strange names. But she had not much time to think about it, the teacher showed everybody the next pose and Sonea tried to imitate it. But… Almost immediately when Sonea tried to stand on one leg, she almost fall! Mpf… Sonea tried it again and concentrated hard while she tried to find her balance, and it almost worked. It wasn’t easy to stand on one leg, but she succeeded, she stood wobbling and shaking, but she stood!
Sonea opened her eyes when she thought that she could stand still and tried to think about the next question, what was difficult because she was not really good at balancing on one leg! But now that Sonea thought about it, she was a little surprised, she had never wondered how a Boggart would look like when he was alone. “Eh, I think that they haven’t a body, it’s just a dark, cold shadow who need or energy, or fear to be strong enough so that they could have a own body…” said Sonea while she again tried to not fall down.
