As he listened to the professor, Asher suddenly became sick to his stomach. The thought of seeing a cow giving birth was horrifying. Looking rather green, Asher started fidgeting and looking for a way out without the professor noticing. He didn't want to lose points for Hufflepuff, but he didn't want to be anywhere near the business end of a birthing cow.

Eliza's eyes were wide at the immense amount of chatter around the barn today. But she was also secretly smirking at the boy's jab at the loud lion girl's house point status. Not because she had anything against her, just because it had been pretty funny for him to say. Ahem.

She turned her eyes back to her professor and felt a little satisfaction in knowing that they were going to be doing something related to birth and babies. But then when she said they'd all be helping, her face turned a little green. With the...gross stuff and everything? She looked around the room to see if anyone else felt a little sick at the thought. Not wanting to interrupt and lose points for her own house, she held onto her idea for when it was okay to talk. The idea of herself, Eliza, just petting the cow nicely on its brow and talking to it softly while the other kids dealt with all the gory truth about birthing. She did not want to see that.

Govoni 07-11-2013 08:52 PM

.................Cow...birth?

Erm.

Peering around the small group of students that were gathered, Dylan looked for his girlfriend. Beezus was a baby-nut. Merlin...she was probably going to have a proper fit at the mention of babies.

Help him.

That wasn't to suggest that he wasn't watching and taking notes, though. NEWTs this term...and he had the goal of passing all twelve.

So...

His quill was poised and ready!

hermionesclone 07-11-2013 09:02 PM

The spectacle from the Gryffindors? Would it be rude to laugh or...?

Alec turned his head to look at something boring, trying not to laugh. Because it was funny. Really. The points loss probably wasn't but... the comment from the younger lion dude had been. But... he wasn't going to acknowledge that. Nope! He was just going to stand there, staring at the wall of the--

DID THE WOMAN JUST SAY COW BABIES? BLINK.

... Oh. They had to help the cows deliver the babies? The tall sixteen year old reached up a hand to ruffle his hair and turned to look over at Firth. This... didn't sound great. Well, great for the cows, really great for the cows, but... well... what if something went wrong? Poor baby cow. And how were they all going to help? There were quite a few of them here...

And did he want to stand back or help? He... didn't know. So he just sort of... stood rooted to his spot.

oh its Erik ok 07-11-2013 09:06 PM

Sooo.....Yeah

Em.

Nigel guessed he had to watch since it was part of the lesson. But he was not going to help . Not his thing. Maybe Mo would do it. He did volunteer to help the Groundskeeper before.

So.

Maybe take some notes. Yeah that sounded good.

Syd 07-11-2013 09:35 PM

No offense taken. ;) Jake deserved it

... Ten points?

Jake's jaw went slack. Just as a puff of dirt exploded right in front of him. He coughed, letting go of Zahra with one hand to cover his mouth. While he was at it, he maneuvered his other arm so that he could set the first year on the ground. "Sorry, kid," he muttered to her so that nobody would hear. He didn't want any more points taken.

Although. He had a few choice arguments that he wished he could respond to the professor with. For one, he didn't offer himself up. And another, it wasn't for someone's personal gain. Well. It was, sort of, but education was a good thing. And he was paying attention to the lesson. And helping an easily-distracted kid do so as well. A defeated-but-slightly-indignant look on his face, Jake folded his arms and side-stepped closer to Anya.

And. Ew. Cow babies? Jake personally thought that not being tall enough to see over the crowd would be a good thing in this case. But still, he didn't say a word. He'd pay attention and do good and earn those ten points back.

Cassirin 07-11-2013 09:44 PM

"I CAN CATCH," Mo announced, perhaps a bit too loudly. And then because he knew that there were babies involved, he opted for an inside voice instead. Mo leaned back over the fence to grin at the Groundskeeper. "I'm a Chaser, Mr. Firth. If you need help now, then I can catch."

But if not, he was gonna take pictures. Baby scrapbook for the new little... "Also what are you gonna name it?"

AlwaysSnapesGirl 07-11-2013 10:08 PM

Ten points was hardly a big deal in Penelope's mind, but then again, she didn't care all that much about house points anyway. Plus they were already in last, so it wasn't like it made that much of a difference. So this Gryffindor wasn't bothered.

And now...they were gonna watch a cow have a baby?

.....Ew.

Penelope wasn't at all excited about that. Really, who would be? That stuff wasn't fun. But she supposed if they were gonna help somehow, that would make it a little more interesting than just watching would. But still...meh.

Sarah was not very happy about the loss of points.. yet the thought of watching a birth made her excited. She loved this kind of stuff. Once she had wanted to be a midwife, yet that was mainly to be with little babies. Did the COMC professor know how to deliver a baby? Just in case Professor Bently would need it.

Sarah had watched animals give birth, yet now it was in a classroom in environment and not trying to ask questions to her stressed out father. Were they going to sing the baby out? All this as so interesting. Sarah's eyes were glowing with excitement... it was an adventure.

The tree was a good sport too, never complaining no matter how many rocks she threw at it.

She wasn't sure it'd be something he was willing to play though. When the tree got you, it got you good. Lex didn't want him getting hurt. It would be her fault and she'd probably never hear the end of it.

Not thanks.

He had never thought of that. Not only did that sound like fun but it would be useful in helping with your reflexes. Oh Merlin, he was starting to think like his parents now.

"Yeah, but it still sounds like super fun." And really a game wasn't fun unless there was a hint of danger in it. "Can you take me with you sometime?"

Yes, Peyton was somewhat nervous, but not because she didn't know what she was doing or anything like that. She'd been through this loads of times, it was just...in the moment type of excitement. Yup.

She just needed the students to cooperate. She hadn't exactly planned for THIS to happen in the middle of her class...

...but then there were GRYFFINDORS, and they were DISRUPTING the progress, and they were...completely out of line.

Not to mention that the Gryffindor's pushover of a prefect didn't seem to mind that someone was piggy backing off him for their own personal gain. Too bad Kettleburn hadn't been made a Slytherin. She'd have been great there...

OOC: Nothing personal OOC, Syd. ;)

"KETTLEBURN," she said, in that tone of voice that indicated she'd had enough. She raised her wand and flicked it in the direction of the first year and her loyal piggy back prefect. A storm cloud of dirt rose from the ground and erupted in a POOF just before the two Lions, giving an all new meaning to the term 'eat dust'. "Settle down, close your mouths, and you," she said, eyeing the prefect, "pay attention to the lesson and stop offering yourself up for someone else's personal gain."

OH, ...BURN!

Peyton inwardly clapped. Disruption or not, that was the perfect finale to the little show the Gryffindors had decided to put on today.

"Too bad she just took one for the team," Peyton replied. "Literally. Ten points from Gryffindor. Now act right and pay attention. All of you."

She eyed some of the Eagles, Badgers, and Snakes, too, just in case another ten or twenty needed to be slashed.

...but, NO ONE.

--------------------

So she relaxed her expression and even cracked a semi-smile as she said, "Right, right." All of you. Even Stark and his Captain Obvious of an answer. "There are many, many ways in which magical and non-magical creatures are alike. The one we'll be focusing on today, though, is how they both bring their young into the world."

She stepped to the side and gestured to the groundskeeper. "Mr. Firth's highland cow is about to give birth," she said. "I was meant to assist in the birth, but since it's going to happen right in the middle of our class, ...we're all going to assist." She looked from Firth to the students and back again. Michael wanted to laugh so badly at Zahra getting into trouble and not only that, she was getting the Prefect in trouble as well. And to top it off, she lost points as well. He couldn't help it, he let out a little snicker, he didn't want the Professor taking points from him. He was going to pay out on Z about this for hours, maybe even days.

Making sure not to look at his BFF because he was likely to lose it, Michael instead focused on what the Professor was saying and almost immediately wished he hadn't.

They were going to watch a cow give birth?

He knew he should have stayed in bed this morning.

"When you say assist. What exactly does that mean?" Because unlike that kid over there who apparently wanted to catch it, Mikey did not want to be going anywhere near it.

It was one thing to ride a cow it was totally another thing to see it give birth.

LilFox06 07-11-2013 11:47 PM

Great. The kid was waving and Jake looked... pleasedish. He did know he was going to get in trouble, right? The little kids near him were yapping and he was there.

Yup. Anya was on the verge of glaring. This obviously wasn't Jake's fault. Her Prefect was merely the target of the hyper active kid. (She'd just ignore the fact that she knew it was going to happen.)

She shot little Z a glance that clearly said pay attention and sidestepped Jake to separate the two of them.

Now. Babies. Anya liked babies. Bring it on!

Bazinga 07-12-2013 12:10 AM

Minerva was watching the commotion that was the lions going on. She half chuckled at it all. Were they forgetting that class was going on, but was class going on. It seemed more like chaos than anything else. Her first tension ridden self started to calm watching and feeling more like herself she moved closer to the front, because well Minerva wasn't a back type of person.

Just as she got closer to the front of the group she wished she would have stayed in the back. Did the professor just say they were helping birth a cow.. That just seemed gross, odd, weird interesting. "Professor, doesn't the cow mostly do it on their own? I mean how do you assist in a cow birth?" She wasn't familiar with any of it, so she didn't know a person would assist. Do they like just catch the calf as it comes out or is it more than that.

Looking towards Mr. Firth she gave him a half smile. She was still upset from everything that happened in the detention and not that she wanted to blame him, but part of her did, but she wasn't going to be rude either.

Felixir 07-12-2013 12:26 AM

A... a cow birth.

So, that meant they were gonna, uhm... watch... the, uhhh... occurance?

Tobias was no idiot. He knew exactly where babies came from and he was pretty sure it applied to cows too, 'cause they were mammals and they'd learnt about mammals at his old school. Basic stuff. So... yeah, he knew what was happening.

The boy's face paled slightly and took on a greyish tinge. This was not something he had prepared for when eating breakfast that morning. Tobias had seen a dog having puppies before, and that had kind of grossed him out a bit. But cows... cows were bigger.

Swallowing a weird lump in his throat, Tobias kept quiet and continued looking on the bright side as he always did... baby cows were CUTE and Tobias KNEW THIS and cute things made people happy so there would be a lot of positive vibes in the lesson and Tobias liked positive vibes.

Wait... had that chaser from Ravenclaw said something about CATCHING it? WAS IT GOING TO FLY OUT?!

The mental image made Tobias' eyes widen and it took a lot for him to not take even a tiny step back. But one thing was for sure, he better not be expected to help catch a flying baby cow as though it was some kind of weird alive quaffle. That was a little too much responsibility. He was quite alright standing right here and staring straight ahead. Straight ahead, yep, just keep staring.

lemon 07-12-2013 02:27 AM

Why, Minister's kid, why MORE points?

Alice narrowed her eyes in Jake's direction, too, mostly because his piggy back rides were supposed to be for HER, right? But also points. More of them. And cow births? Watching her fellow Gryff leader and little first years get reprimanded and covered in dirt sounded more entertaining, but she jumped a little more to get a look over the heads. Baby cow and stuff.

Someone needed to give her a lift, too. Could she like levitate herself?

Was that possible?

Govoni 07-12-2013 02:34 AM

Oh....there was Bee...

Dylan didn't try to catch her attention or anything. It would've been stupid to try. One tracked minded as his girlfriend was about babies...

Was this going to be one of those things were Professor Barlow spoke the directions and steps as the process was happening? Because that's what Dylan was ready for...He didn't really want to watch...that much.

Weak stomach.

He might pass out.

Ew.

lazykitty 07-12-2013 02:44 AM

Beaming at the Minister's daughter's loss of points here. It was just absolutely brillant. Also notice the department head's niece being good over here? Yep.

Anyway, Sky's suspicions had been confirmed plus some. The plus being that they, as in THE CLASS was going to assist. Uh, moment to freak out over here? Because, yeah, that sounded like something that this Slytherin wanted no part of. "But professor, don't know nothin' 'bout birthin' no babies!" was her squeaked response.

Right, so it sounded like it was his turn to take the stage. Fantastic. He got up and brushed some stray hay off his shirt. Clearing his voice, he addressed the students. "Right. As--"

But as soon as he began, he was interrupted by Bonny.

MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Ali turned to check on his pet. She seemed alright for now, so he decided to continue on. However, it seemed a particular student seemed to have aspirations of becoming a muggle veterinarian...

Right time to move on. "As I was sayin'," he began. But suddenly an earsplitting squeal threatened to shatter his eardrums. Whipping around, he expected to see Bonny having a problem. What was..? Then it occurred to him that it sounded like a girl... as in a human girl. By the look of Beezus Castell, it had come from her. He gave her a look.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Could he go on now? Scanning the small crowd, he didn't see any impending distractions. "Right. So..." He paused briefly to see if there were any more interruptions about to happen. Not finding any, he continued. "The highland is very similar to humans in tha' it carries its young for abou' nine months." He couldn't imagine that misery for so long. Kudos to you, females. "Also, mos' often they don' give birth ter more than one baby at a time."
Stepping back now, Bonny was clearly visible for the first time. To the untrained eye it likely looked like her head was stuck in a fence. "Now. Bonny has already bin in labor fer awhile. Usually once the cow starts pushing, it won' take more'n an hour. As yeh can see, I put her head in a restraint, which prevents her from hurting herself or any one of us. Plus it makes it so she can' step on her young accidentally when i' comes out."
How much should he say about the actual birthing process? By the looks on many of the students' faces, not much. He chuckled to himself. "Now the calf should come out front feet firs', but if not, I'll have ter reach up an' turn it around. Tha's called a breeched calf." Hopefully that wouldn't happen. "Once it comes out, I'll need ter take the calf an' clean it and rub it ter stimulate breathing. Yeh all cin help with tha' process," he said with a glance to the Gryffindor who'd asked what he meant by assisting, "an' Professor Barlow will be givin' yeh instructions on that."
"Right. Any questions at this point?" he said before moving on. He thought he heard a bit more squeaking from a small Slytherin, but as long as that was the worst it got, he wasn't concerned.
lemon 07-12-2013 03:09 AM
"We're gonna.. rub a baby cow?"
Weird.
She jumped again. Alice needed a stepping stool or, like, five more inches of legs. Could Firth maybe.. lift that cow up, so she could still watch?
Oh, but the restraint. So no? Okay.
OH??? Lex GRINNED at him. "Sure I can! You can come with me the next time I decide to head out there, if you aren't busy then." Who knew, maybe he was one of those people who actually did homework. Heh, those people. They were so cute sitting up in the Common Room, leaning over a piece of parchment, staying up at odd hours. NOT the kind of life she wanted. Night was for sleeeeping days were for adventuring. There was hardly any time in between.
"Sharpen your reflexes before then, mmkay?" Ah but then she was being COMPLETELY distracted by what she heard next.
Not Shiny Grounds Keeper say whaaaaat???
Cleaning...cleaning the calf...right after it came out...EHHHHH? And thanks for killing the fun, having the cow bound so nothing epic can happen. How was she meant to keep focused if half the class wasn't running around like headless chicken, trying not to get attacked and possibly BRUISED by the apparently not all that vicious anyway creature?
Boy, this lesson was becoming more and more depressing. She didn't like babies, any kind of babies. Why was she here helping another one come into the world? It just didn't make sense.
At the asking of whether or not there was a question her hand flew up. "Any chance the calf'll be born rabid and we all end up having to run for our lives??" PLEASE SAY YES!!! If that was the case, she'd happily yank it out for them. Anything to make the process faster.
Colley 07-12-2013 03:18 AM
Geez. Distracting Gryffindors were distracting. Caterina was more interested in the birthing of baby cows than the antics of distracting Gryffindors. She leaned forward a little to maybe get a better look. They probably should have done this in a more orderly fashion with tall people in the BACK where they belonged.
Question? She had a question. "So they don't usually give birth to more than one at a time, but do you know if this one will?" TWIN BABY COWS? Please? Pleaaaaasseeee?
Bazinga 07-12-2013 03:22 AM
Minerva started moving closer without realizing. She was so interested in what Mr. Firth was saying that she totally forgot about being upset over the detention and getting her hair burned off "So we are actually going to stand here and watch the calf come out of it's mother?" She hoped some weren't sick easily, she hoped she wasn't. Not ever being near something like this she wasn't sure. She noticed he didn't want to get into the breech stuff, but she really wanted to know. "Umm. Mr. Firth.. Could I talk to you later about some of this." There then maybe she could ask more questions. So maybe the healer thing was for her or care for animals. This was just going to be amazing.
"Is she in a lot of pain?" Of course she was she had another cow coming out of her. "I guess.. I mean can you give her anything for the pain?" because that sounded like a great option for anyone... "Is she close..." Yes she was asking to many questions, but she really was interested and really wanted to know everything that was going on.
Syd 07-12-2013 03:32 AM
Okay, so Jake was relatively okay with the whole birthing thing. Even if it was a cow. But when the groundskeeper guy started explaining the whole process, the Prefect felt his stomach turn. That was very... detailed. And didn't sound pleasant.
Jake was just glad that the students weren't needed until after the whole ordeal. He could rub a cow. That was doable.
He glanced at Anya, wondering how she felt about this whole thing. She liked babies. Did cow babies fall into that category? He didn't ask, because he was working on the paying attention thing. Instead he looked at the laboring cow and hoped there would be some warning before the main event.
oh its Erik ok 07-12-2013 04:16 AM
Nigel did not really want to help with the process. To bad that he was not short enough to hid in between people. He was tall enough to see from the back and that was were he planned to go.
He would take some notes from what the Groundskeeper said and what Barlow would say.
But helping was out of the question. Though he was not opposed to watch Mo catch it. But it appeared that was not going to happen either.
lazykitty 07-12-2013 04:37 AM
Trapple?
O___o
...............?
At least it seemed like they going to be helping with the actual birth, just cleaning the calf after. Though, Sky wasn't sure she wanted to do that either. Sounded really gross and messy.
