The first Care of Magical Creatures lesson of the term is being held during the time of day that comes between afternoon and dinnertime. The skies are just beginning to darken, but only barely so. By definition, it's still daytime.
A makeshift classroom has been set up in the vicinity of the barn and sanctuary area. Benches are set in rows spread out before the new Care of Magical Creatures professor. Professor Barlow leans against her own makeshift desk, polishing off the last of an ice cream cone and awaiting the prompt arrival of her students.
OOC: The lesson will officially begin sometime this evening. The thread is open now for you to post your character arriving. It's up to you to decide whether or not your character should spend this time chatting, but just be aware that you never quite know how Barlow will react to that. Choose wisely and have fun!

So they were going to harvest eggs this lesson. Specifically the eggs of an ashwinder. It was totally something Kat had read in her book while studying for OWLs last term. Kind of like those serpents that love fire. It sounded dangerous, but interesting too. Hmm... the prefect was definitely looking forward to this class.
Kat raised her hand to answer. "After laying their eggs, the ashwinders will only live up to an hour before they collapse and turn to dust." Okay, something she did not like. Dust. And to think Hogwarts was dusty and stuff. Ew. But yes, that was her answer. Mhm.

MEEEEP! "I-i'm sorry , Professor it won't happen again" the Slytherin's cheeks flushed even darker but this time it was from embarrassment. Why does he always do that?!
He now listened to the question and after some thinking he raised his hand in the air. " Ashwinders are created in magical f-f...fire" he sighed before continueing. "They have pale skin and red eyes and when they lay their eggs they turn to dust in an hour"
Oh and. "They also have a 3 x's classification" Which he totally did not agree with that! I mean, FIRE creatures!
Those things are a XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX classification in Daichi's mind.

Minerva sat and listened to all the answers about what could be used and not harm animals. When the next question came she saw so many hands that she decided to sit this one out. She always liked to answer, but it was nice to let others have a turn as well. Here a voice next to her say that there were other potions other then love potions that the eggs could be used for, Min looked over at Ethan.
As he explained about the eggs to the two younger students she couldn't help but smile, it didn't surprise her that he knew what he was talking about. Turning back to face the professor, Min waited for the next question.
Was it okay if she just snuck out now? Because she wasn't entirely interested in producing a serpent from fire to collect their eggs. But heeeh it was rude to just walk out and it was a new Professor, which Ness wasn't too sure she liked yet..but she'd remain, it was the right thing to do in this situation.
At least she knew a little about them, not much but a few facts here and there.
"Professor, I believe if eaten whole they can cure a fever...I think?" But she had never tried that because that was eww and she preferred to stick to other medication even muggle medication in a case like that.

Ashwinders.. Ashwinders.. Wade remembered flipping through them in his books last year for his OWL's. He had been momentarily thinking about that ice cream for dinner later that he had missed the first question.. Heh.
Now to answer."Ashwinders live for about an hour before they lay their eggs." He had rose his hand to start off, "and their eggs could burn a building down in minutes once ignited."
You have bewitched me body and soul, And I love- I love- I love you

Care of Magical Creatures Lesson #1: Ingredients can be harvested from a magical creature without causing harm: Our focus: Eggs Particularly Ashwinders & their eggs What can you tell about Ashwinders?
Serpent created from magical fire
thin, pale grey with glowing red eyes
Only live an hour and collapse in dust after they lay eggs
eggs are red and give off intense heat
Eggs can be frozen with freezing charm and used in love potion

Ashwinders? They were they were those snake things right? Oh, think, think, think. What did he know about them? Raising his hand, he said. "Well, since they are snakes you could harvest their skin that they shed. And Ashwinders, They come from magical fires if they burn too long. Though, I don't really know what a magical fire is." Was it just one created using Incendio?

Hmm, ashwinders, aren't those little snakes that come from an unchecked magical fire, Eeee! Please don't show them, I hate snakes!!! Oichi cringed as she she raised her hand responded, "Ashwinders are snakes that come from a magical fire, please don't take any out, their creepy buggers. However their eggs are rather alright and even interesting. Frozeb they are used for love peotions and eaten they can cure a fever. And the best part is that as eggs they are not snakes which is fantastic.".
Ummmm, better take notes. Right. Blue jotted down a couple of things other students said before raising her hand and clearing her throat, going all professional like. "Yes, the eggs are definitely not a good idea to use in a fry up and I really doubt they taste all that nice sunny-side up. If the resident of the house they reside in doesn't call the Ministry ASAP the eggs can ignite and burn down the whole house."
Susan continued to write all the answers students were giving down. She didn't want to mess this up since she could end up being burned if she didn't pay attention. Susan really didn't know much about Ashwinders, only that they came from fire and turned to ash rather quickly. And since everyone else had already said that Sue didn't feel the need to reiterate what was already being said, so she sat quietly while taking notes.

Anyway, back to the question that she totally had a answer to because she knew it! "The eggs are really hot and flammable. Ella said their used for love potions when they're frozen but they're even neater when you live 'em because they can light other stuff in the area on fire as well." It was neat, it was. Just...probably not for the people nearby if they didn't master the aguamenti charm or something.
As for the Ashwinder. "The Ashwinder themselves are pityful though, they only live for about an hour. I don't imagine you can do very many epic things in only an hour." Quite pityful.

Poor ashwinders. Their only purpose was to lay their eggs.

First, though, she needed to answer the next question, and as she turned away from Michael and back towards the Professor, her hand was already raised. Ashwinders. Who didn't know about them!? "They are grey in color." A very boring color at that. As for their eggs.. Rhodes raised her other hand, so that both of them were now in the air. Two questions, two raised hands. It made sense.
"Ashwinder eggs are like, really, really expensive if you try to buy them in Knockturn Alley."

Ashwinders... Ashwinders... what did he know about Ashwinders?
Not much, truth be told. Apart from the love potion bit and the bit about how they come about. What was the difference between a magical fire and a normal fire? ... No, now was not the time. He shook his head and raised his hand, his eyes still on the Professor. "Like the others have said, they come from the leftover bits of a magical fire that's been left unattended," Pause. "And... because of that... Ashwinders can be found worldwide. Anywhere!" And he had nothing else on the eggs bit.

Umm, can't the ashwinder egg be used in potions, to make love potions, if they are frozen that is. Do they have to be frozen in order for them to be useful in a love potion? Or can they not be frozen and still be useful in the potion?" You know, just curiousty. Just like anyone else would have.

GASP!! They were actually producing Ashwinders! WHOA! That was brilliant!!
Because that meant they were using spells and whatnot. Obviously!
Beaming, the girl raised her hand. "Ashwinders are created if we leave magical fire burning for a while!" Maaagicaaaaaaal fire! Magic! Spells! YES!!
Sophie didn't care much about the egg it was laying or anything. Nor was she that worried about having many snakes slithering around. Slithering. Slytherin. Geddit? Hehehehehehehehehehehehehe! That was brilliant!
Could they start yet?

Giant spiders? Who didn't love THAT?
Mo raised his hand at her question. "Ashwinders are born from magical fires, but they have really short lives. They only live an hour before turning into little piles of ash and cinders. That's sad... can you even do much living in an hour? I mean, some people don't live properly in about 90 years, so how much living can you really fit into an hour?" And now... he sort of wanted to figure it out. Fit as many awesome things into one hour as possible.
Also... he glanced at Tag. "And I think the eggs have to be frozen on account of being so hot. You can't use them otherwise."

Who needed one of those? But he knew proper classroom decorum and didn't want to speak out of turn, hence the casual, semi-raised hand.
Then he glanced over at Mo and some Gryffindor boy as they debated the proper handling temperature of Ashwinder eggs. "Frozen for love potions, sure," he said, still finding it funny that that's what they were most known for. Especially since they were used in Potions all the time - and were pretty interesting. Raising her hand the girl decided to give the most basic of information about the snake itself. "Well Ashwinders are ash colored snakes and they are called Ashwinders because of their coloring and the way that they move." She smiled. "Also, they should never have an engorging spell cast on them because they will explode in a shower of ash and embers - the eggs must be frozen quickly otherwise they could set things around them on fire because they are very hot." Yeah she knew this stuff that was basic. They'd learned about the fire-causing-abilities a few terms before in Potions class.

Of course she wasn't going to put on a theatrical demeanor and give that kind of answer to Professor Barlow. Too bad for those who're expecting.
The Ravenclaw's hand went up, "Professor, Ashwinders are called as such because "Ash" comes from the color of the creature itself which is pale-grey and ashes are connected to fire which exactly where these creatures come from. Magical fires, specifically. And "Winder" because of the sideway movement of some snakes like the rattler. " Snakes! She loved snakes....sort of. Especially one certain snake who was grinning stupidly at their Professor. Heh. "Now basically, because they come from magical fires....ashwinders are found everywhere but if they happen to lay their eggs in a residence, the eggs will ignite and naturally, burn down the building." So....gotta be careful with those magical fires. "The eggs, maa'm....are red in color and give off intense heat but Freezing Charms can be used for it so that it can be utilized by other means." Her classmates already provided the eggs' uses so she stopped on that note.

"We should check it out." Would be kinda cool to see the scorchmarks if they were still there. Would the professor let them go check it out at the end of the lesson? It'd be fun.

True story, bro'.
And not a very fun one either.

And since everyone else had already said that Sue didn't feel the need to reiterate what was already being said, so she sat quietly while taking notes.
Peyton's gaze turned from student to student as answers were given. "Good, good. Basically, you've summed up the Ashwinder quite well. So I'll recap what you've said and hopefully clear up a few lingering questions that were asked, as well," she said. She gently placed the egg she'd been carrying into a jar and sealed the jar shut.
"A magical fire is different from a regular fire, because a magical substance has been added to a magical fire. Today, we'll use floo powder in the fires we create," she went on to say. "When you leave a magical fire unattended, an Ashwinder can rise from the fire. At that point, they slither away to lay their eggs, and yes, they only live for an hour afterwards." Pitiful, but some of these kids had to learn that everything in life had a purpose, and it wasn't the purpose of the Ashwinder to live long at all.
"As most of you noted, the eggs are extremely hot, and because of that, you'll need to cast the Freezing Charm before collecting them. They can be used in love potions, the Fameludos Draught, and as a cure for ague. That's another name for a type of fever of malara," she explained, looking at the student who'd asked what ague was.
"So on to the first part of our practical, which is learning the Freezing Charm. If you already know the charm, you can help the younger students," she said. After all, they'd never make it through the lesson if they couldn't cast the charm. "So up on your feet and wands at the ready." She flicked out her own wand.
"Up, down, up, down, and swipe to the left," she said, making the movements herself. "...and then--Immobulus!" She gestured for the students to try the charm themselves. "Go on, go on."

Mhmm. Mhmm. She listened as the new Professor summed up everything.
Gorgeously said, maa'm.
And things were quickly moving. That meant they'd actually be working with Ashwinders and collect the creature's eggs this first lesson? Okay, that was cool. Plus, Beezus already knew how to do the Freezing Charm since they've learned that in Herbology terms ago....yeah, they had to fight off pixies so that charm came in pretty helpful. But for the sake of it, she did the Charm. "Immobulus!" ih-MOH-byoo-luhs. Up, down, up, down, and swipe to the left.
.......and it went right towards Alexa Cambridge....barely missing her by an inch. Whoops.
"Ohmygodric! I'm sorry Lex!" Geez. Where did her aim went off to? She wasn't pointing at anybody. "Merlin...are you okay?" She went right over to the Gryffindor. "That was unintentional. Do you need help with the spell?"

Ella got to her feet and removed her wand, standing to the side so that she had some room to work. She'd used this charm before but it didn't hurt to practice some more, yeah?
First the blonde worked on the movements. Up, down, up, down, and swipe to the left. It was like some weird dance move, her doing that with her arm. She fought the thoughts of how silly she must look and continued once or twice more before repeating the incantation to herself.
"Immobulus...Immobulus...Immobulus..."
Right. She totally had this. "Anyone need any help?"

Woot! Spell time now! It wasn't often that one got to use spells around magical creatures...didn't really call for it anyway so she was more than pleased hearing there'd be wand work in this lesson.
On the Professor's instruction she jumped up and whipped her wand out. Immobulus. Not something she'd used before but it couldn't have been all that hard. Things weren't hard for Third Years you know. It was like the starting point of greatness or something. So far in her other classes she seemed to be on a roll, with a few hitches here and there. Meh, what'd that matter. For the most part, her wand had become cooperative this term.
She began practising the spell movement when she felt something rush right by her creating a cool breeze as it did.
Blink. What the kneazle......?
The next thing she knew she was being apologized to and Bee was standing next to her asking if she was alright. Blink. Blink. Blink. She was supposed to be upset. Something like this would usually earn a rude remark but it was Bee and she liked her...plus...she didn't...feel upset? Weird. She gave a shrug before beaming up at her. "Yeah I'm fine. Good thing your aim sucks, huh?" BEEAAM.
"I don't know about the spell, haven't tried it yet. Gimme a sec." She raised her wand and did the movement as she'd seen it but actually she went up an extra time before swiping to the left. "Immobulus!" Sparks flew out of the end of her wand with a zapping sound but that was it.
"Yeah...I'll take that help, thanks."

Right. She totally had this. "Anyone need any help?"
Since Kace was a first year he needed all the help he could get. He had no clue how to do the freezing charm and he needed a little help with Immobulus. He heard the Quidditch Captain asking if anyone needed help.
Kace went over and asked shyly "Hi...i need some help." he grinned at her.

Minerva listened as everyone talked about the Ashwinder. Then the professor had done some more explanation of it. She took a few notes on her parchment and listened as professor Barlow talking about a spell they were going to use. She had used that on horrible horrible Pixie's in herbology and flying one term, so she knew it well.
Once they were suppose to practice, Min stood up and did the wand movement waving it like a wiggle then up and another wiggle, "Immobulous" She said without moving her wand, she didn't want to hit anyone now did she.
Looking around she saw Susan, and figured she probably would need some help and headed over towards her. "Hey Susie, need some help?" She would even let her do the spell on her if she needed to.

Geez. She had to point out the aim. Beezus was actually having problems with her aim nowadays and it was not remotely good in any level because she was a Chaser...that automatically meant she needed accuracy and precision to get those quaffles into the hoops. "Meh. You had to say that. Captain Sparrow's telling me off about that too."
The good thing though was that Lex seemed fine. She really didn't want to freeze anyone. She wasn't even sure Professor Barlow would allow that. But the lioness was beaming up at her so no harm done.
The Ravenclaw watched as the younger girl performed the charm. She saw sparks fly...but not quite. So....Lex wasn't here yet when Professor Bentley had them fight off pixies, hmm? She haven't tried the spell. So Beezus gets to help and teach her. All right then. "You've got the incantation correctly. I think you just have to work on the wand movement. Look at how I do it, okay?" Beezus showed her the up-down-up-down-swipe-to-the-left motion. "The second up is a little higher than the first and make that swipe a tad swifter." She gestured for Lex to start.

Susan was so excited to get to learn another spell. She loved learning anything with magic but she always had a little trouble getting it. So Susan tried the wand movements while concentrating really hard. Up, down, up down, left, "Immobulous" But nothing happened. Susan slumped her shoulders....maybe she needed to add more left movement. So she tried again...up, down, up, down, little harder to the left, "Immobulous" Yet still nothing happened. "Humph" Susan crossed her arms because she was mad at herself. Why couldn't she get it?!
Sue heard Min before she saw her. Susan turned to her and smiled brightly. "Hey Min! Yes, I would love some help. I can't seem to get it to work." Susan frowned thinking she would love to get something right the first time. "I'm not sure what I am doing wrong." Sue looked up at Min expectantly like she was her "knight in shining armor." She had helped her get spells before and she was pretty sure Min would be able to help her with this one too.

Snicker.
"Sorry, just thought that was obvious, but you normally have very good aim, I've played against you in a game, remember?" Hm? Hm? Hmmm? Lex remembered. Bee was very good up there. Not much could have changed in the course of one summer...unless the girl went and got her arm messed up or something...Did she? A rather curious thought and now Lex was just staring at her.
Staring and listening, that's what she was currently doing. Apparently she hadn't gotten the wand movement as right as she thought she had. Lex didn't take her eyes off Bee, the girl was demonstrating and getting it wrong a second time wasn't an option.
"Right... Her hand was making itself busy repeating the movement as she watched. "How's this?" The swipe was faster too. Did she see?? Did she??? There needed to be confirmation before she went ahead and tried it with the incantation, the last thing she wanted was to get someone electrocuted or whatever the result of her wand could be.

Kace was relieved when the Captain Ella decided to work with him. He needed all the help he could get. Kace followed and gave them both the necessary space they needed.
Kace nodded when she said to work on the wand movement first. He tried to copy it and it had to be the Up, Down, Up, Down and swipe to the left. He nodded and gave it a try.
"Up...down...swipe to the left?" AGH no that wasn't right. "Hold on...Up..down...Up...down..swipe to the left!" He got it!
"I think i got it down!" he smiled at Ella. "Up, down, up, down and swipe to the left." he said moving his wand with the motion.

Mika had was a littler nervous at first and just watched as Professor Barlow talked about the ashwinders. The one thing she knew was that those wand movements looked, well, very tiresome and tedious. She ran her hand through her hair as she listened to what Professor Barlow said.
When instructed to she took out her wand and tried the movements. Up – down, up, down…hey this kind of seemed familiar like how gentlemen always stood when ladies entered the room in those old movies. She chuckled at the thought – she swiped to the left and then repeated.
The movements were actually kind of easy, and fun and she’d done the spell before so it was easy enough right?
She took her elm wand out and tried it again, she moved her wand up and down, and then up and down again finally swiping to the left before saying the spell. “Immobulus” the spell hit an unfortunate butterfly that had been fluttering near her face.

Spell Time! Haruka quickly finished up her notes on Ashwinders, and then began practicing. "Immobulus. Immobulus. Immobulus." She muttered under her breath. She kept said the spell a few more times until she had it down. Then she practiced the movement. What was it again? '...Up ...Down, Up, Down ...Swipe left?' Right? Pretty sure that's right. She pulled out her wand and did the movement a few times Alright, now that she's got the motion down too, it's time to combine them.
Making sure her wand wasn't pointed at anyone, she began. Up, down, up, down, swipe left- "Immobulus!" Bright sparks shot from the tip of her wand. It was certainly pretty, but it just didn't seem right. "One more time." Up, down, up, down, swipe left- "Immobulus!" This time, instead of sparks, a full flash shot from her wand. THAT looked like a spell done right! Although she wouldn't be sure until she actually got to use it properly, Haruka was confident that she had the spell down.

Minerva stood back watching Susan as she practiced. Her cousin seemed to have the word down and the wand movement wasn't to bad. She figured she could get it in no time. "Don't worry about it, your doing well. You'll get it soon." She walked over to her cousin and took her wand hand. "Try to do the movement a little sharper like this." moving her hand to the movement, then dropping it when finished. "That might help a bit." She was hoping to give Susan the correct advice and not screw her up more.
"Your wording sounds correct, so I just think a few more tries and you'll be fine. If you want, watch me once." Minerva pulled her wand up and did the movements. "Immobulus" shooting it towards... "Oh no.." She went quickly toward Ethan and pointed her wand, "Finite, Oh my gosh Ethan.. I thought I was pointed at nothing when I was showing Susie. I'm so sorry.. are you alright?" She bite her lip, how on her does one hit their own boyfriend with a spell. Seriously she felt bad..
Turning back to Susan though she said, "Well that's how it works, but umm don't hit Ethan with it, you can try it on me or just in the open where no one is." She looked back at Ethan hoping he wasn't hurt nor mad at her for doing that.
Peyton wore a smug grin on her face when Professor Barlow complimented her on her answer. The redhead was none too shy to turn down good marks. In fact she enjoyed them a great deal. And being the Slytherin she was, she loved showing it off.
Listening to the next question Peyton didn't raise her hand instead she drew a small figure that resembled and Ashwinder at the top of her parchment. The drawing could pass for a worm as well. The girl's skills did not lie in drawing. They were out on the Quidditch pitch. After finished her drawing she took notes about the creature.
Peyton's interest sparked once she heard they'd be working with Ashwinders. It was saaaad that they had to die so fast. An hour, seriously? Why did mother nature allow that? Couldn't they at least have a day to live like flies did? How was that even fair?
Shrugging that off, she took out her wand. At least she was a witch. Add a super protective brother and an epically over protective father to that; Peyton was sure to live long, long, very LONG years. At least, that's what she thought.
"Immobulus," she pronounce. Peyton remembered learning this charm her second year at Salems. Good thing she payed attention. That and she was gifted in Charms. It was mostly a family thing besides potions.
Waving her wand in the air, she traced the wand movement. GRIN. She got that right, too. Green-gray eyes glanced around. She was reeeeeally tempted to practice on another student, but that definitely get her points taken away. Better stay put in the mean time...
