The first Care of Magical Creatures lesson of the term is being held during the time of day that comes between afternoon and dinnertime. The skies are just beginning to darken, but only barely so. By definition, it's still daytime.
A makeshift classroom has been set up in the vicinity of the barn and sanctuary area. Benches are set in rows spread out before the new Care of Magical Creatures professor. Professor Barlow leans against her own makeshift desk, polishing off the last of an ice cream cone and awaiting the prompt arrival of her students.
OOC: The lesson will officially begin sometime this evening. The thread is open now for you to post your character arriving. It's up to you to decide whether or not your character should spend this time chatting, but just be aware that you never quite know how Barlow will react to that. Choose wisely and have fun!

Care of Magical Creatures was one of her most favorite subject. She didn't mind working with animals and their stuff. It was fun, she thought. Christina wondered what would they learn today. Perhaps a dangerous creature one? She hoped so.
Walking happily to the the grounds, she entered the place and watched the Professor was eating ice cream. Damn, I want ice cream too now. She mumbled. "Good day, Professor." She smiled and took her seat

Not one of Nessie's favorite subjects, but she was curious, curious to see if this new Professor was any good or not. The lesson probably wouldn't be too bad anyways. It all depended on what creatures they'd be working with, if they were working with creatures for the lesson that was.
As she stepped inside the classroom she scanned the new Professor for a few moments. Looked alright, not to strict or maybe a little? She'd have to wait and see.
"Good Afternoon, Profesor." She gave the woman a small pout. "Hope you are enjoying Hogwarts." Even with the happenings, which Ness was beginning to think they weren't that bad...or maybe they were.
A seaaat, she needed one. The Hufflepuff looked around plonked on an empty bench and waited for the class to begin.

This was awesome!
Not that Rhodes liked animals or creatures a whole lot, she had a cat and an owl and sometimes they were too much for her, but the fact that they were actually having a lesson outside instead of inside that stuffy old castle was what had her the most excited. She wasn't sure what was going on with the castle and how dirty it was, but at least being outside, dirt was to be expected. Inside shouldn't be dirty, outside should. It made sense to her.
Shoes on her hands, because they were outside and being outside meant you didn't need to wear shoes, the Slytherin made her way over the grounds towards the place where the lesson was being held and stopped once she reached the others. And the Professor. Who she needed to say something to. Right. "Hello, Professor!" she gave the woman a smiiiiile before taking a seat on one of the nearest benches.
Oh, look! Michael was there. Rhodes pretended to throw her shoes at him.

No use complaining about that for now!
Lex shoved the last bite of her chocolate frog into her mouth as she arrived at what she assumed would be the classroom for today. OH and there was the Professor!...Wait...was she the first to get here...?
"Hello Professor!!" She gave the woman a wide grin before plopping down on a bench just bouncing slightly from all the sugar she'd had on the way down. There was another chocolate frog in her pocket...she...she kinda wanted it now, especially after seeing what was left of the ice-cream the Professor had been having. "Are we all having ice-cream once the lessons over?"
Peyton had just swallowed the last of her delicious ice cream cone, when she heard the rather loud greeting of the first student to arrive. She glanced at the girl, slightly wide-eyed, and said, "Hello, Miss Cambridge." Her again. The one with the kneazle who'd gotten himself in a stew. Ice cream? "You can if you want to," she said with a shrug, "but you'll have to get it yourself. It's served in the Great Hall."

It definitely wasn't going to be a Governor right? Hopefully. She saw a lot of them last term already and she didn't have time to see them again.
Kat went over to the sort of classroom. Makeshift and all, because they were outdoors. The prefect made her way there and saw Lex. Hmm... how interesting. She was one of the first students here. "Hello, Professor," Kat said as she saw the woman there in front. She was familiar and Kat recognised her as the lady who walked passed the Slytherin Table during the feast. Yeah, that was definitely her. Who else would it have been? Kat just needed to know Professor who she was. "Welcome to Hogwarts." She wasn't sure if she was an alumna here, so that was okay. Then she went to take a seat on one of the benches.
"Hello," Peyton simply said. She had no idea what the girl's name was, nor did she have some magical roster that'd differentiate one student from the other. They'd find out names in all good time, though. "...and thank you."

Derry never ate the stuff... she didn't eat broccoli either, which made eating pretty difficult around here. "Good afternoon," Peyton replied.

Oh, and this was a class with a new professor. "Hey Professor," she greeted her with a smile. "Welcome to Hogwarts." Even if it probably wasn't quite as great as it had been in some aspects. Hopefully that didn't affect what creature they got to learn about in this lesson...
It seemed she was also pretty early to class too since there were only a few others there at the moment. Interesting. She wasn't often this early, but she went ahead and sat down on a random bench.
"Hello," she said, "and thank you." She was getting a lot of welcomes, which was nice, but she should probably tell the students she, too, was a student here. One proud former Slytherin standing right here in front of the class. She'd tell them all at one time, though, once class started.

"Hi, professor." Professor who's name we didn't know. Did he need to introduce himself? Eh, he would later. For now, he had to inspect a tiny smudge of dirt under one of his nails.
"Hello," Peyton said. She raised her eyebrows ever so slightly when the boy suddenly turned his attention to his fingernails. Children could be so strange at times...

POSITIVE THOUGHT... Professor was a girl. SO at least Ascanius would have something to pay attention to during the lesson. Ahem. Technically it wasn't his fault. If male Professors were remotely interesting Ascanius wouldn't have these problems. But see, they weren't.
Stepping into the area where they were holding the class he saw an EXTREMELY attractive older woman eating some ice cream. Jeez. This whole school must have had something in the water. Every FEMALE Professor he had come in contact with was a Grade A Hottie. Not a frumpy woman in sight. He was being rewarded for something. He had to be.
Smiling all wide and stuff, Ascanius approached his Professor and said, "Good morning, Professor." Eh, why not. Tack it on? Sure, he could do that. "You look lovely today, by the way." Truth.
Now it was time to find a seat.
"Good afternoon," Peyton stressed. Then she glanced down at her attire, wondering what was so lovely about the type of outfit one would typically wear while out in a barn working with creatures. "...and your nose looks a little brown today."

Did she have a super secret, hidden bin of ice cream SOMEWHERE? And could Peyton have ALL of it? Green-gray eyes watched steadily as the professor finished off her ice cream cone. "Hello Professooor. I'm Peyton Baltazar," she greeted, showing her pearly white teeth with a smile. With introductions out of the way, she asked nonchalantly, "Just out of curiosity, is there more ice cream?" ...PLEASE?

The other thing that bothered Nate is how this time the class was held during the afternoon. Normally it was held in the morning, or EARLY afternoon.
As he noticed the people with the Professor Nate said "Hey Professor. Welcome to Hogwarts. I hope you like it here." He said with his most cheery of voices.

She vaguely wondered how this teacher would act. So far Tora only really liked Professor Airey and she was unsure where she stood with the other professors yet. Well, there was only one way to find out!
Tora was glad they were outside without the confining walls of a classroom. She breathed a small happy sigh to be finally out of the small spaces. She walked over to one of the benches towards the right and plopped her bag down next to her. She took out her notebook just in case she would need to take notes and started humming quietly to herself the theme from the old show, Downton Abbey. Not really sure what made her think of it just then, she just did.
Hmm. This one was good with names. Either that, or she knew how to pay attention to details. She was a Ravenclaw, too. Go figure. "It's been a pretty good day," she replied.

Digging his hands into the pockets of his trousers, the sixteen year old continued wandering down until he reached a particular area near the barn and the sanctuary where the class must be being held. Because... well... why else would benches be put up randomly with students and the new Professor there?
And speaking of new Professor... WAS SHE EATING ICE CREAM? Or... finishing. But STILL!
A BIG WIDE SUPER GRIN spread across the Hufflepuff's face that reached his grey-blue eyes. It was as if someone was holding up a sign that said 'FREE ICE CREAM' or 'FREE PUPPIES' and were handing either one of those things out. OKAY. "Hello Professor!" he said cheerily, "Erm... welcome to Hogwarts!" Not wanting to seem any more creepy than he was probably coming across -- BUT THE WOMAN HAD ICE CREAM -- Alec walked over towards the bench Kaiden was sitting on and sat down next to him, the grin still spread across his face. "General Kaid!" Dude got a grin and a nod.
Also... when was ice cream dinnertime, again?
Peyton just stared at the boy, wondering why in the name of Merlin he was just grinning at her and saying nothing at all. "Hello," she finally said, "and thank you. It's good to be back."

Her older Pain in the Neck seemed to be in a good mood, and to her surprise, she was as well. Her hair wasn't a frizzy mess, she had a good breakfast, and the weather wasn't all horrible. In fact, the eleven year old made it a goal to stay happy all day, and she was going to reach this goal. Even if it meant keeping her mouth shut for a while at some point.
"Hey dude." She walked up to Nate and twirled a pink highlight around her pointer finger. Waiting to be acknowledged, she pushed the rest of her blond hair over her shoulder. Gross, it was kind of dry. It was amazing what a few weeks at Hogwarts could do.
Whatever. She'd find someway to fix her hair. Maybe then she could fix her social life, her knack of getting in trouble, her previously horrible grades (middle school wasn't easy for her) and her big mouth. Get some sass out of there too and she'd probably be a model child. HAH! Like that'd ever happen.
OOC: I'm guessing by 'older guy', you meant my professor character? If so, she's a female. She's actually the woman in my siggy.
Then another student entered, another student who didn't bother to speak. Peyton inwardly shrugged it off. Meh.

Besides, class hadn't officially started yet.
Peyton eyed the little Ravenclaw who walked up next. She was a talkative one, wasn't she? Just not to her professors, it appeared.

This professor seemed pretty chill, eating ice cream up front (agh and not sharing!), so Tora wasn't too afraid to start up a conversation. "Well I'm going pretty good, still gotta do that Transfiguration homework though, and how's your day been?" she laughed and then asked both of them in a lower voice. "What do you think the new Professor is like? Any rumors or anything to share?"
Peyton's facial expression dropped to a mild glare. Was she going to have to make her whole 'classroom is not social hour' speech? Those Ravenclaws were a chatty bunch, weren't they?
Funny. She's pinned that one on the Gryffindors.

"Afternoon, Professor!" he smiled brightly, finding a seat as close to the front of the class as he possibly could, after the seats that had already been taken.
Then he saw it.
The ice cream.
It had been too long since Tobias had eaten anything other than that vile rubbish they served in the Great Hall, and his eyes were fixed to the treat. It was nearly gone, but it was still enough to make Tobias' stomach growl in hunger; breakfast had not been satisfying enough, and he'd skipped lunch altogether after realising he was a knut short. "Where'd you get that?" the boy said in what was almost a pitiful whine as he nodded at the ice cream, forgetting that he was in a classroom setting altogether.
"Good afternoon," Peyton said. Get what? ... Oh, her ice cream? "In the Great Hall."

It's such a nice day out and ice cream would really just make it even more awesome... She made herself pay attention to the girls next to her though and not so much to the ice cream cone that was dripping down the side of its cone, taunting her taste buds and making her mouth water.
She lowered her voice to show the younger girls that while some pleasantries were usually okay in the beginning of class, full blown conversations usually got some narrow-eyed looks. "I'm great Isobel, thanks for asking." She listened as Tora mentioned her homework and the new professor. Now that is something we definitely shouldn't discuss in class. She could have super hearing for all we know! So because of this, Eliza kept her answer extremely positive and brief. "Nope, nothing yet. But she's pretty and she must be nice if she likes animals, right?" She gave them both an excited grin in anticipation of the lesson that was surely about to start any moment now.
What in the name of Merlin what up with these Ravenclaws?! Chatty bunch. She made a mental note to separate that little group of talkers as soon as she could.

Well, at least the Slytherins knew how to greet their professor then get seated and ready for class. "Hello," Peyton said.

She also eyed her chickadees, as Mo like to call them, aka the younger Ravenclaws and sat next to them (beside Eliza specifically) and interrupted their little chit-chat. Interrupted Maybe that was why Addy hated her so much, because she tended to put a stop to the funsies. Only when it was necessary though. Besides, they were in class and even if it hasn't started yet...it was still ill-mannered if her Ravenclaws kept on talking with a Professor in front. She nudged Eliza gently, leaning in to peer at the two first years, "Keep the chatting low, okay girls?" Beezus winked at the trio before shifting her attention back to the ice cream.
Because ice creams required fervent attention like that.
"Hello," Peyton said. She nodded. "It's good to be back." She'd just started to turn her head when she heard the girl quiten her chatting housemates. Well, why don't you just look at that? She knew she count on at least one of the bookworms to tame the wild eagles.

"Hello," Peyton said. Then she just blinked. That's all she could do. This girl...did realize that she was...carrying her shoes, right? Strange, strange children.
"If you haven't found a seat, find one now, please. Class is starting," she said. She didn't have a door to shut, but if she did, this would be shutting time. Anybody arriving after this point would be late. "Quieten down while you're at it. Class time isn't social hour, and I won't speak over you."
RAWR.
...and then she smiled. No, she wasn't a force to reckoned with, but she wasn't Little Miss Sunshine either. "My name is Professor Barlow. Thank you for welcoming me to the school, but I have to tell you that I, too, was once a student here. I'm a former Slytherin and of the class of 2068," she said. They could do the math. "Yes, you do get a chance to eat ice cream later, but no, I don't have any for you here." Again, she was no one's house elf. They could get their own ice cream. "There's more where my cone came from right in our very own Great Hall."
She propped herself up on the edge of her desk then looked out over the crowd. "I graduated from Wizarding University with a master's degree in magizoology. My specialization is ingredients harvesting." Yes, yes. The Care of Magical Creatures professor harvested ingredients, and she was pretty darn good at it, too. "Since university, I've worked at a harvesting center and reserve, where I took care of unicorns and mooncalves. I also harvested the hair from the unicorns to be used for wandmaking, and the dung from the mooncalves to be used by Herbologists and fertilizing companies."
"Now, which ingredients do you know of that can be harvested from a magical creature without doing any major harm to that creature?" she asked.

Carsyn thought long and hard. At first, everything that came to mind involved the parts of dead animals, which didn't qualify as not hurting the original creature. But then she remembered one and offered it aloud (though admittedly not very loudly, as Carsyn had the quietest of voices),"The secretions of bundimuns, Professor? "
Well, now that was an introduction. Nigel still wanted some ice cream though. And some Pie but that could wait. He did hear that one hufflepuff made some awesome pies. He did not want to do the math. But he did get the summary of her introduction/speech.
"Well, the the horn and tail hair of a unicorn"
Nigel knew they were used in potions. It must be because they do no harm to the unicorn.

Er...that wasn't exactly what she meant when she'd ask. Hadn't the Professor thought to bring enough for everyone? It would have been a wonderful starting gift to get everyone enthused about the lesson--really she just wanted ice-cream. Dinner wasn't until after this lesson was over and she didn't think she was allowed to eat in this class.
Ah well.
She settled more comfortably into her seat and listened to the woman talk about herself. This was good. She could do this, no problem. It wasn't like she as still bouncing a little in her seat. What ever anyone that accurate idea. She just had a bit of extra energy that needed burning off.
Oh! Oh! Oh!
Question!!!--Question she didn't know the answer to. Yeah. She got those a lot. She did have a question of her own though. "Professor, seeing as you stressed the whole not harming the creatures bit it means there are ingredients that hurt when you take them too, right. Can I have an example of one of those?" She knew of one, maybe, thanks to the now graduated Slytherin perfect, Sierra. Kneazle whiskers, ugh.

Eliza blushed deeply at the comment Professor Barlow made about not talking in class as she was sure it had been meant for herself and her friends. She didn't think it was that distracting since they were outdoors and class hadn't started, and she'd tried to wrap up their pleasantries as quickly as possible, but now she saw it hadn't been quiet quickly enough. She felt her breath stick in her chest as she worried about losing points for it. Shoot...just...agh. She tried to move past it though and raised her hand to answer the question.
"Wouldn't removed phoenix feathers be harmless, since they molt some before they ignite?" She thought they did anyway. She gave an apologetic look to Beezus, still blushing about the chatting before class.

"How about the horn of a Bicorn, since they shed those annually?" Alice's hand shot up as quickly as she could get it to, so no one could call out one of the answers that had popped into her mind already. She could think of a few more off the top of her head, but she stopped naming them and quieted down. And started paying more attention to Lex, because she was asking fantastic questions as well.
And she knew the answer to that one, too! Could Alice respond to it even though Professor Barlow wasn't the one who had asked? No? Okay. Well. Lady was an expert on magizoology or whatever. She'd have good examples for sure. The fifth year was waiting for them.

Professor Barlow...That was Edric's last name, wasn't it? Ella tilted her head and observed the professor carefully, trying to find some resemblance. After a minute or two the small blonde determined that the woman was not nearly ogre-ish enough to be related to her big best brother!friend. ...Even if she did sort of have the same snappy attitude it seemed.
The whole working with unicorns and mooncalves thing, that was interesting. Ella's curiosity was peaked instantly and she had questions, lots of them. She'd need to hold them for later though as she had one to answer now. Ingredients harvested without harming the creature? Hm.

Now this was a lesson Mo could get behind. Not only talking about animals, but talking about NOT HURTING animals. In fact, it was sort of thoughtful on behalf of trying to get what they needed for magical purposes without causing any harm to the creature in question. That was pretty responsible living, as far as Mo was concerned.
Plus the professor was pretty in an entirely different way than Professor Pretty was. Professor Other Pretty. He raised his hand. "Acromantula venom, Professor, only I wouldn't really recommend people harvesting that willy nilly. They have great huge teeth and a lot of excessive anger when it comes to their meals running away. And by meals, I mean the people trying to harvest their venom."

Tobias would be getting in on that later tonight for sure.
After listening to the Professor introduce herself using a lot of long words that Tobias didn't understand, the young Hufflepuff leaned forwards eeeeeever so slightly as a way of somehow getting himself to pay attention better. At the question, he raised his hand. He didn't know a lot (read: anything) about magical ingredients, but he had one theory.
"Professor, for some ingredients, like... I dunno... feathers and stuff, is it possible with anything that you can somehow ask the animal's permission to take it? Like, you know how you can bow to a Hippogriff and they will allow you to get close to it and stuff? Something like that but harvesting stuff from them instead? And then maybe the stuff you harvest could have better properties?" Tobias lowered his hand. He may have been hyper and stuff and seemed like a bit of an annoyance to have in class, but he had been well educated in the past and this had led him to be as inquisitive as possible. And it kind of related to the question. At any rate, it would help him think of more answers.

It seemed like she had made it to class right on time. Rhodes quickly shook her shoes from off her hands and threw them to the ground by her feet while the Professor began to talk about.. things she really didn't care about. She didn't think she was going to have to know when the woman graduated Hogwarts, or what she did after. Hearing all that information just made her want to ask a few questions, but then those answers would just want to make her ask more questions and the Professor didn't look like the type who would want to be bombarded with questions.
Besides, they were the ones being asked the questions, and Rhodes shot her hand straight into the air. Too bad she didn't leave the shoe there. She probably would have been noticed faster. "Harvesting a creature's eggs wouldn't harm it."
Having the creature lay the eggs, however, that was a whole other story.

Michael was sure that both his parents had told him about creatures and what their uses were but he could not remember what they were. Okay he could remember one but he had no idea if it had any use, he just liked saying the name. It made him laugh. He raised his hand in the air. "I think you can harvest something from a Glumbumble."
Haha! Yeah it still made him laugh when he said it.
Also, we see you Rhodes and your shoes. He would get her back later for that.
This class was one that she immediately liked. Really, a Professor with a side of spunk and someone who knew how to harvest things from creatures without hurting them. That was definitely a plus. Her mum would approve of her she knew this immediately.
However, listening to the other student's response's she felt her stomach knot in despair. Had someone really just said that harvesting a unicorn's horn wasn't going to harm the soon-to-be defenseless creature. Her idea of harmless was more a hair here, a toe nail clipping there - nothing that could cause a creature excruciating (or even dull) pain. Pain wasn't something she liked doling out.
Unless, well, unless it was justified. Raising her hand she just smiled, and raised her voice. "Professor I believe since Boomslangs are snakes and snakes shed their skins - a Boomslang wouldn't be harmed in the collection of its discarded skins." Really, discarding things like that did come in handy especially because it was a main ingredient in Polyjuice potion.

"Nah, it's okay." She shrugged at Tora when the girl began apologizing. "And I'm not blaming any of you." She patted Eliza's back too because the girl looked as though she could really use it, having that kind of apologetic expression and all.
Really though. Hush now eaglettes...
The Professor was taking the floor.
....Introductions and all that.
And then the first question was thrown about. Beezus of course, raised her hand up and waited when it was her turn to speak. Ingredients that can be harvested that won't bring forth any harm to the creature. She knew one or two....aside from all those already said. "Doxy droppings, Professor. " Did it even need an explanation why it wasn't harmful to the doxies?
This was simple enough for Nate. He basically spent his entire summer studying for the OWLs that he would have to take this year. He could not fail! If he did his older brother would ring out his neck.....like a wet rag.....that's been used to dry everything in the great hall.....that was underwater in the Black Lake. He knew that the ingredient he was about to say is extremely hard to harvest, but it was a still an ingredient. The Professor never specified that it HADto be a COMMON ingredient. So he raised his hand like the others and simply stated "I know this is a very hard ingredient to harvest, or buy, but Phoenix Tears are an ingredient that doesn't affect the Phoenix." Tis true.

Barlow? The young blond looked quizzically at the Professor before checking her schedule again... and then realized that she’s been staring at the Professor’s first name. “I—I’m sorry Professor Barlow.” She mumbled squeaked as she turned the shade of a strawberry and huddled down to take her seat... preferably somewhere off to the side and away from the woman’s line of sight, at least at first glance.
And goodness this one harvest creature parts... alas for this young one to think of that occupation as something that means dismembering the creature.
There was a question... well at least it that sounded a bit kinder. She raised her hand hesitantly mostly because she wanted to answer it but not be stared at as the student to screw up a name “Uhm... Streelers secrete venom when they move, that gets collected and is used to deal with Horklump infestation.”

Kommoto listened to everyone shout out answers. He had no idea. He tried to hear what people were discussing, to see if he could pick up an answer that way. No luck. Well, there was only one thing to do. He sat down and let others answer this one for him. there would be other questions he could answer. He could wait.
