The first Care of Magical Creatures lesson of the term is being held during the time of day that comes between afternoon and dinnertime. The skies are just beginning to darken, but only barely so. By definition, it's still daytime.
A makeshift classroom has been set up in the vicinity of the barn and sanctuary area. Benches are set in rows spread out before the new Care of Magical Creatures professor. Professor Barlow leans against her own makeshift desk, polishing off the last of an ice cream cone and awaiting the prompt arrival of her students.
OOC: The lesson will officially begin sometime this evening. The thread is open now for you to post your character arriving. It's up to you to decide whether or not your character should spend this time chatting, but just be aware that you never quite know how Barlow will react to that. Choose wisely and have fun!
Scurrying over the eggs, Peyton knelt beside the small bunch, feeling the warmth they radiated, and stretching her gloves to make sure they were securely on. And then she flicked her wand, remembering the wand movement and said, "Immobulus!"
Happy with her work, she picked up the eggs, carefully balanced them on her gloved hands - thank goodness they reached up to her elbows - and walked over to where she had left her bag and the jar.
On her way, Peyton wore a dreamy smile, already getting ideas of doing this at home for kicks. Heheheheeeee.

It kept on moving, unstoppable. Cross classes, corridors, lawns, courtyards, grounds.. Tick, tick, tick.
Ashy, just stop somewhere buddy.
Amara was getting tired following the slither guy, trying to keep up with its pace. The new Hogwarts diet wasn't exactly helping keep strength for long time. She began wondering if she should just skip the trail and walk back to castle. The professor would get some 100 eggs from the others, she wouldn't miss a few of this Ashy, would she?
Precisely at that moment, Ashy came to a halt. Good thing, considering she was just about to think leaving.
"Finally...your highness" she sighed with a little bow. The ashwinder threw a cold glare at her. What was with everything glaring at her? It was shifting a bit and she could glimpse something round.... hidden.
The eggs? How many are there.....
SKADOOSH!
And there was no Ashy glaring at her.
HUH.
The being had just....just crumbled into ashes, right in front of her. A second glaring on and in the next, just gone. PUFF!
But it did leave an evidence of its survival. The eggs, the fresh, shiny and hot eggs.
1. Choose a fire and add a few sprinkles of floo powder to it. This will create a magical fire. You may watch your fire but don't tend to it (unless you absolutely have to).
2. Once the Ashwinder has risen from your fire, follow its ashy trail to the EDGE of the woods.
3. Wait for the Ashwinder to collapse to dust.
4. Cast the Freezing Charm on the eggs BEFORE touching or collecting them. You should wear protective gloves as an added precaution.
5. Collect your eggs and place them in a glass jar. Label the glass jar with your name, house, and year and place it back on the table.
She was watching in awe really as her fire sparked and crackled brilliantly. Smiling softly as the warmth heated her cold, cold bones she sat just sat back and watched the fire. Quietly watching as the fire began to writhe and move more rapidly. And then it happened a pair of red eyes could be seen glowing from the fire.
Then, it moved, slowly, lazily slithering out of the fire as it coiled, and recoiled and pulled itself to the forest’s edge. She just gulped as it came to the edge of the woods and watched it. She stood up and glanced at the trail it had left, crumbled bit of hot ashes were at her feet as it slithered toward the forest and stopped to watch the snake lay its egg.

Peyton carefully set each egg inside the jar and then closed the lid tight. She used her right hand to do that. It was her beater's arm and it sure had to be the strongest of the two arms.
Hmmm.
She suddenly got an odd image of having a large arm and then a thin one. Her eyebrow rose at that thought. Ew. No. That wasn't happening. She shook her head and giggled at herself. Of course that wouldn't happen. She'd just work out both her arms.
Focusing back on the matter at hand, Peyton labeled her jar with her name, house and year.
Okay, so she was almost done. Hopefully she wasn't forgetting to do anything, because she was not doing this again. As she said before, this was being done in one shot and one shot only.
Getting tired of holding the jars, she knelt down on the grass and started setting them down in a little pattern around her feet. This would hopefully make grabbing them easier, and there was less carrying involved this way. Everyone won!
The borwn eyed girl was just putting on her protective gloves when.. POOF! The Ashwinder collapsed into dust at the beginning of the Forbidden Forest. No warning. Just poof.
"What did I do? I just hurt a creature!" It wasn't a yell that she said this with, more like a shocked and upset whisper. Seriously? She was going to be in trouble already? Nate would have a cow, and Thomas would collect the whole barn. Tanner gulped. She wasn't prepared to deal with this, thank you.
She was all set for a full on freak out when she remembered the board. They were supposed to do that. It was part of the Ashwinder's nature. Lay eggs and then die. Which means, that if logic had any hand, there should be some eggs lying near the dust.
Thank goodness logic seemed to have taken the wheel. She was not prepared for any other option. Now, she had to use the freeze thing from class. What was that spell thought? Immobi? Immobile? No, none of these were it. Immobilous? Wait, that's it!
"Immobilous!" She hoped that she was doing the spell right, and sure enough, it seemed as though she was. Yay! She loved it when spells worked out well. It sure beat them going horribly wrong.
Now to pick up the frozen eggs and put them in the jars. As she made sure her gloves were completely on and then picked up each egg one by one, she wondered what they would be using the eggs for. Maybe some kind of cool creature caring thing? Maybe they were growing Ashwinders! It was possible to grow Sea Monkeys, so why not, right?

Amara waited for a few more seconds and then hurried towards the eggs. She couldn't risk it..what if they just crumbled to ashes? Like mummy, like daughters.
There were five large, shiny eggs waiting to be picked up by her. She bent down and closed in on the egg.....
WAIT..!
What did the professor say? Charm, charm. How could you forget? Mentally scolding her little ignorance, she took out her wand.
Okay..what was the movement again?
Yeah... Up..Down..Up...Down...You look like a clown...
Shut up.
Swipeee left and... "Immobulus!"
She was glad the freezing charm worked. She was very excited about calling another burly older student to help her out, which wasn't really a good idea. Whatever.
She bent down, scooped the eggs and hurried back to the castle.

Oh right. Activity time. Okay then.
Kat went over to get some floo powder and chose a fire. Hmm... which one? After choosing a fire, Kat sprinkled some floo powder on it. Green fire. Slytherin fire, even. Thinking of a random snake appearing at that fire was a bit scary yet amusing at the same time. So the prefect just watched her fire as it glowed green...
... and waited for an Ashwinder to appear.
It wouldn't be too long right?
Mm, it was taking too long. Here's to hoping that it would be worth the wait.

Mika stood there her heart hammering as she tried not to spook the creature. She watched in awe as the snake’s ashy skin began to break apart and crumble infront of her. It took quite some time but eventually the snake’s eyes began to fade in color until they were just about the color of a dusty dying ember of a fire.
She watched, shocked as it finally crumbled in front of her covered the ground directly in front of her with ash. She took a step forward and glanced to see where the eggs were. She had to find where the eggs were before she could do anything with them.

She grabbed a jar at random. Some of the students had already returned with the eggs. She was so absorbed with her own Ashy that she hadn't noticed anyone else at the forest edge.
Wait, so there were like a dozen ashwinders at the forest edge? HUH?! What's the deal that each one burst into ashes? Dozen ashwinders slithering around. Freaky.
She placed the eggs carefully, one after the other, inside the jar. She didn't want them to break yet, and produce more furious ashwinders. And at that close range, no way.
So there it went.... one, two, three, four and....five. DONE! She picked a quill and wrote on her name on the label.

She placed the jar carefully on the table. What was the professor going to do with ALL these eggs?
Raise an ashwinder colony and bring mutiny against the soaring Hogwarts bills. SMIRK.
Okay so now he was up to the hard part. Casting the charm. Michael was sure that he had the incantation down but he was still a little apprehensive about getting carried away with the wand movement. So he did a couple of quick movements, up, down, up, down and swipe to the left. he did that two more times before putting on his protective gloves.
Taking a deep breath, Michael moved closer to the Ashwinder eggs that were lying amongst the ash and raised his wand. Up, down, up, down and swipe to the left and as he performed the movements, he spoke the incantation. "Immobulus." He glanced down at his parchment once more.

Right then. He picked up the eggs that he had just frozen and began making his way back to work area.
Okay, so everything was in the jars. She was actually doing pretty well for herself to be honest. Tanner had half expected to hold her wand the wrong way or to break the eggs or for the Ashwinder to attack her. And yet, everything actually went okay.
Quickly, she labeled each of the six jars and balanced them all in her arms. This job was getting heavy. She wasn't excited about running after the Ashwinder because, well, running, but now she had seriously fragile materials in the jars? Whoa, this is heavy! (not the jars, but the situation)

And what could the professor possibly do with about a hundred or so baby Ashwinders? Was Professor Barlow bent on world domination? It was world domination wasn't it? Wait, could you dominate the world with creatures that only seemed to exist for reproducing more creatures? Hmm, heavy questions.
Tanner ran back to the class, jars balanced in her arms, huffing and puffing and wishing she worked out more often. Seriously, who knew class had this much running in it? And could she join the world domination army?

There she had found them. There were about five small eggs lying right near where the snake once had been. She just stood there in shock for a moment before whipping out her wand – really, she should have had it out before hand that would have been the smart thing to do. She still was shocked that she could feel the heat from them from so far way.
Making the rather tedius wand movement the girl pointed her wand at the first egg. “Immobulus!” there, the first one looked to cool off and stop heating. She pointed her wand and did the whole wand movement jig four more times – but when she got to the fifth one she was sure she could smell smoke. “Immobulus” she cast the spell for the fifth time that day and carefully reached with her gloved hands and placed them all in the jar.
When she looked back over the spot where they had been lain she was certain there was a slight scorch mark on the ground.

Tick tock tick tock.
Well, definitely longer than expected.
Kat was just watching the fire and observing the green-ness of it, maybe because she had nothing better to do than this. She didn't want to watch people being people. Not that they didn't have enough of that in Hogwarts where students had different personalities and different attitudes. No wonder Hogwarts was like a big bowl of drama and... even action.
Oh. There was her ashwinder. Eh, it looked ugly. Kat cringed while looking at it. So, that meant it was time to follow it right? The Slytherin did just that, and felt like a stalker following its ashy trail, as Professor Barlow would put it as.
She was doing her job. The ashwinder better do its job too, and that job is to collaspe to dust and lay some eggs. GO.

With the eggs all jarred she carefully began to follow the ashy trail (what was left of it) back to the fire and her belongings. When she arrived back there she quickly made sure that the jar was closed properly and that she couldn’t feel any heat coming from it once more. So, to be perfectly honest what she did was open the jar and slowly place each one in her gloved hand before putting hem back in the jar one by one and covering the jar.
Yep, they were all safely jarred and not at any risk of setting a jar aflame and sending shards of glass flying through the air. That was good, because she didn’t want to be charged for all the gauze everyone would use if that were to happen that is.
She walked over to where Professor Barlow was and carefully labeled the jar before handing it, and its contents, over to her Professor.

Thankfully it didn't take that long to find his jar and once he had the lid open, Michael carefully placed the eggs inside, took his gloves off and then replaced the jar.
Once he had that done, he picked up a quill and wrote the required info on some parchment and then stuck it to the jar. That was the easiest part of this whole exercise.

Time to create some ashwinders!
Nerida grabbed some floo powder, gloves, and a glass jar then looked around for a fire that was unoccupied. There was one not too far away that hadn't been taken yet, so she headed over that way with all of her items in her arms.
Once she reached the fire, she set the jar down on the ground beside her and started sprinkling some floo powder over the fire. She then stepped back from the fire holding her gloves in her hands...And waited... Looking at the fire not messing with or tending to it just waiting...
"Come out, little ashwinder..." the Ravenclaw silently whispered to herself.

It was moving slowly, and all patience that Alice had (if any) was slowly vanishing. How long did it take to move and disintegrate, really, was it that strenuous of a job? No, no, it was not. She resisted the urge to nudge it along with her shoe and continued staring at the Ashwinder expectantly, willing it to become dust already.
And then it FINALLY reached the edge of the forest, except it wasn't doing anything. Oh. Right, though. It was laying eggs. Was that a private matter, one that she needed to look away for? But she'd known this Ashwinder all of its pitiful three minutes that it could call a life, why was it so shy? Alice cleared her throat and redirected her gaze to other things anyway, giving it a moment of privacy to do its personal things.
So yeah.

"The steps you'll need to follow are listed there," she said, pointed to a chalkboard she'd prepared ahead of time. On the board were the following instructions:
Choose a fire and add a few sprinkles of floo powder to it. This will create a magical fire. You may watch your fire but don't tend to it (unless you absolutely have to).
Once the Ashwinder has risen from your fire, follow its ashy trail to the EDGE of the woods.

Cast the Freezing Charm on the eggs BEFORE touching or collecting them. You should wear protective gloves as an added precaution.
Collect your eggs and place them in a glass jar. Label the glass jar with your name, house, and year and place it back on the table.
"The floo powder, protective gloves, and glass jars can be found on the table just over there," she said, gesturing toward a nearby table she'd also set up ahead of time. "I'll be circling the class area if you need me, and remember there's still time to learn the freezing charm if you didn't before. Just don't take too much time, because I still want to get you lot inside before dinner is served." Then with her silence, she seemed to say 'Go ahead. Get started.'
Laura looked at the Professor, this was really confusing, she had no idea what to do but well she would try, it was something about Ashwinder or something like that right, she looked around to see what everyone else was doing and sighed, she was always so slow at doing things, but it wasn't her fault.
Laura grabbed some floo powder, then she made sure she had her gloves and then finally she went to a fire that was unoccupied, she then sprinkled the floo powder into the fire and looked at it, she was hoping an Ashwinder would be born.

West was reasonably eager to get started once the professor gave an explanation that had him rest easy about it. Good to know and such. Pretty AND smart. That was the best kind of professor, as he'd only taken to noticing recently. Ahem. So hearing the instructions West got up and went over to collect the things he'd need. First the protective gloves. He put those on and then took the glass jar and some floo powder and looked around for a fire.
There.
He chose one and headed over to it, then knelt down not too close but close enough that he'd be able to do what was needed. His jar he placed aside and then West sprinkled the floo powder in.
Now just to wait. Wand at the ready of course. While he was waiting he practiced the wand movement a few times. Yes, he was ready.

Still following the Ashwinder. Where was it going?
Oh. Edge of the forest. Right under some bramble-y type stuff. Fun. How was she supposed to get the eggs without getting a thorn stuck in her skin? Sky tried to figure that out while she waited for the Ashwinder to turn to ash. Waiting. And waiting. Borrrring. Yawn.
Just when she was contemplating a before dinner nap, the snake collapsed. Now it was egg time......

How long did it take anyway? It had to be an untended fire didn't it? West sat back and watched and waited, using the thinking time to let his mind wander. He hadn't seen ashwinders form in fire before so West wasn't sure what to expect. He reflected on that whole life cycle thing. It was a bit confusing really, and he had one big question: did ashwinder eggs hatch? Also, how did they know they were actually eggs? If an ashwinder was born in flames... it was like Mo said, it was a bit interesting actually. Had anyone ever tried to hatch an ashwinder egg? Or dissect a frozen one?
Something in the flames caught his eye and West sat up straight and watched. An ashwinder! Yes, it was a snake in the fire! He watched it eagerly, edging back from the fire a bit more and moving into a crouch. He scooped up the glass jar in one gloved hand and kept his wand ready in the other as he watched it.
And there it went! Faster than he expected. He let it go in front and then gave chase, darting after it eagerly as it headed toward the forest, leaving a trail of ash behind it in a sidewinder pattern.

"The incantation is Immobulus...ih-MOH-byoo-luhs. Four syllables." The Slytherin paused in his explaining. allowing that to sink in for a moment. "It's always best to repeat the spell to yourself...and get comfortable with your lips and mouth forming the letter sounds." This was totally the way he did it...an in his experienced opinion, it was best all 'round. "Once you've gotten used to saying it...then you can work on the motion."
Then he was bringing his wand up to eye-level and aiming for a low hanging brance of leaves. Performing the motion that was similar to tracing mountains, Dylan clearly said, "Immobulus!"
Turning back to Theo, he grinned. "Do you see what I did there? It was simply like outlining the tops of mountains...with a swipe beneath that at the end."
"Are you ready to try?"
...And they were getting started. Looking back over at Kinsley, the Slytherin offered a smile. "It's okay...If you need help at any point, grab me and I'll guide you."
Theo was ready to get the information from Dylan but OH... it was time to start. Well, thanks for giving him time to practice, professor Barlow. The boy frowned slightly in her direction, but then focused back on Dylan. He didn't want to hold his captain up too much. ih-MOH-byoo-luhs. So he had been thinking of a totally different word. It began with an I. That was a start at least.
Ih-MOH-byoo-luhs. Imo-byoo-lus.
"Immo...bulus?"
He gave a nod to Dylan, since that part was easy enough. It was the wand movement that he was gonna suck at, and he knew it. Theo watched VERY closely when he showed him the movement. What... was... that? It wasn't until Dylan explained further that it made a little bit of sense.
"Mountains. Okay..." He raised his wand and slowly traced mountains like Dylan had, and swished it at the bottom. Obviously, he was going WAY too slow for any spell to work with it, so he tried to speed it up, thus making a total mess of it. Theo let out a GROAN, but kept trying. "Am I doing it right?" He gave it another go, as quick as he could, but accurately, too. "Immo... Immobulus!" Pfffft... that would do. Theo nodded at Dylan.
"Okay, I think I got it. Thanks." And onto... creating fires with scary floo powder, he supposed. HAH... :|
Theo tucked his wand away for a moment then walked over to a fire after picking up some floo powder. He had only heard about this stuff once or twice, and it did not sound fun. He was very grateful that they weren't travelling by it today, otherwise he would definitely have a breakdown. With very squinted eyes, Theo tossed his floo powder into the fire and watched it for a moment. Was that it? Now he just had to wait for a creepy Ashwinder.

So... where were the eggs? The ashwinder was still fleeing and then it stopped all of a sudden right near the edge of the forest, amongst some grass and brambles. Wha... oh it was laying them, making an ashy nest? Something like that. He crouched down to look, eyeing the thin serpent within and noting its red eyes which were almost the only colour in there, given the ashwinder was the colour of the ashes it left behind. He was like this for some time with nothing happening aside from every now and then a distinct ashy scent wafted towards him, but West watched and watched with great interest and patience.
It started laying the eggs and West couldn't see very well but knew this because of the additional hot red burning colour he could glimpse. How many would it lay? West wasn't sure. He couldn't even count but thought there were at least five in there. He checked his gloves again and kept vigil, watching for the ashwinder to die.
Surely it was nearly done? Another thought came to him and he looked over toward the professor.
Were all ashwinders female then?

Still with her wand pointed at the two eggs Sonea tried to concentrate, she had done her best during the practice but she knew that she still needed to do her best. She had also learned from Dylan, when she tried to make fire in the common room, that it was VERY important to concentrate on the things you wanted to do, so Sonea concentrated as hard as she could and spoke the freezing Charm, “Immobulus” said Sonea and it worked! The first egg was frozen and now she needed to do the same to the other egg.
The young girl pointed her wand again at the last egg and spoke the same spell, “Immobulus!” and it worked again! Sonea smiled proudly because she was learning a little bit quicker now and grabbed her gloves she had with her and put them on, ready to put the eggs in the jar.

The more he waited, the more terrified he was getting. Were Ashwinders even an attacking kind of creature? He figured that the fact that they rose from fires made them pretty creepy, creepy enough to be scared of anyway. FAULTY FIRE..
Just as he was about to shout it out to the professor, something was happening. Theo couldn't quite tell if it was an Ashwinder 'cause he'd never seen one before.
But as he watched something emerge, it did pretty much look like a snake. A snake that had risen from his fire, so obviously an Ashwinder! WOOP, he had done it! Only he wasn't finished yet. He watched the creature leaving the fire and making it's escape into the woods. Theo backed away of course. He wouldn't follow that thing until it had finished it's business and gone.
For now, he just kept eyes on the ashy trail it left behind.
