Sonea watched how the fire started to burn harder and did careful a few steps backwards, she was not afraid of the fire but she didn’t liked it either to be so close to it. Fire could be dangerous, it was pretty but it could harm and kill you if you were not careful enough. It was a comforting thought that the professor was near now that there were so much fires here and she was sure that some students weren’t so careful.

Sonea waited and waited until the Ashwinder raised up from the fire and did quickly a few steps more backwards, she had never seen a Ashwinder before and she was not so sure if she wanted to come too close to it. The Ashwinder looked for a few seconds in her direction before he headed to the edge from the forest. Sonea knew that she needed to follow it but she stood totally paralyzed, she had looked right in the red eyes from the Ashwinder and they were… Scary. Sonea was not sure if she wanted to follow it but she knew that she needed to do it.

Sonea looked quick behind her, searching for the professor and when she saw that professor Barlow was still nearby and she knew that nothing could happen she followed the trail from the Ashinder toward the edge of the woods and stopped, she waited for what the creature would do next.

SPOILER!!: Notes
- Choose a fire and add a few sprinkles of floo powder to it. This will create a magical fire. You may watch your fire but don't tend to it (unless you absolutely have to).
- Once the Ashwinder has risen from your fire, follow its ashy trail to the EDGE of the woods.
- Wait for the Ashwinder to collapse to dust.
- Cast the Freezing Charm on the eggs BEFORE touching or collecting them. You should wear protective gloves as an added precaution.
- Collect your eggs and place them in a glass jar. Label the glass jar with your name, house, and year and place it back on the table.

To recap, we're going to produce an Ashwinder from a magical fire and gather the eggs the creature produces," she said. "Follow along..." She turned on her heels and walked to the side of the barn, which was near the edge of the woods. When she stopped, she looked out over an expansion of regular fires.

"The steps you'll need to follow are listed there," she said, pointed to a chalkboard she'd prepared ahead of time. On the board were the following instructions:

  1. Choose a fire and add a few sprinkles of floo powder to it. This will create a magical fire. You may watch your fire but don't tend to it (unless you absolutely have to).
  2. Once the Ashwinder has risen from your fire, follow its ashy trail to the EDGE of the woods.

  5. Collect your eggs and place them in a glass jar. Label the glass jar with your name, house, and year and place it back on the table.

"The floo powder, protective gloves, and glass jars can be found on the table just over there," she said, gesturing toward a nearby table she'd also set up ahead of time. "I'll be circling the class area if you need me, and remember there's still time to learn the freezing charm if you didn't before. Just don't take too much time, because I still want to get you lot inside before dinner is served." Then with her silence, she seemed to say 'Go ahead. Get started.'

Some OOC things to remember: For purposes of this lesson, we'll just say that everyone's Ashwinder laid eggs at the EDGE of the trees and not deep in the forest. Everyone's magical fire should produce an Ashwinder. You're free to RP as if it didn't, but if you do, you'll only get credit for one or two steps out of five. Also, remember our IC time frame. Barlow's going to try and get your characters in before dinner, so we won't be sitting here hours waiting on things to happen. Dinner isn't too far away. Professor Barlow is here, so she'll be monitoring IC and helping keep things in control. Finally, for full credit for the practical, you should complete this in five posts. Please label your posts, and have fun! The practical will close Sunday night US Central time.

After Kace was done practicing with Ella, he heard the professor tell them the next set of instructions. "Thanks Ella" Kace whispered as he smiled when she ruffled his hair.

Kace had to choose a magical fire? Oh this should be interesting....Once he heard the instructions, he went to the table to get his supplies. He got the floo powder to make the Ashwinder rise up. He got the protective gloves just to be safe and the jar to collect the jar. Once he got the necessary equipment, he found his own little fire. He needed to do this himself. He could do this...He could.

Kace had his floo powder at his side, he was shaking because he was a little nervous. But he shouldn't be nervous....he was Kace Lecium after all...they never showed fear. He pinched the dust and put it into the palm of his hand.

He took a deep breath and threw it into the fire, ready for the Ashwinder to rise from the fire and be born.

Step 3

She hadn't stopped fast walking until she came to a spot by the edge of the forest. So this was where it wanted to stay...okay. No complaints here. Less walking for her anyway.

Once again she plopped down on the ground to wait for something spectacular or just plain epic to happen. She'd never seen an Ashwinder collapse to dust before and she was kinda hoping it would have been something HUGE and easily seen but really she'd never known until she sat patiently.

Pffft. Right.

Lex was sitting, but it wasn't very patiently. Every now and then she would get to swaying and the grass nearby was being picked at. This wasn't Herbology, it wouldn't matter. Then finally, when she was sufficiently bored she looked to the serpent who seemed so determined to live. "Oi! I haven't got all day. Drop dead already!" The dinner wasn't much but that didn't make her any less hungry. Besides, there was ice-cream for dessert and this thing was holding her back.

The moment she spoke those words she saw the thing collapse to nothing but dust.

O____O

Oh dear...

Blink. Blink.

"Er...thanks...?" Is that what you said at a time like this?

Watching the fire closely something finally caught her eye, something had moved. Jumping up she squealed "EEEPP" this really excited her, she watched as the Ashwinder began to slither out of the fire and towards the forrest, she kept a good distance from the creature so as not to disturb it. Fascinated she watched as the trail it left in its wake was all ash, charred grass. "How cool!" The small blonde mumbled to herself. Yep, no doubt this was her favorite class.

As Kace was waiting for his Ashwinder coming out of the fire, he watched for the professor. The professor was circling and he knew he would be safe. He did not like snakes too much but he would deal with it for the lesson. Kace looked at the board to see the Steps once again

He had to wait for it, Kace was waiting a few more seconds till when it slithered out. It risen from the fire and he gawped at it. It looked revolting to be honest. It looked at him and hissed. Kace's fear perked up but he knew he had to follow it.

The Ashwinder was going to the woods. He was reluctant but he followed the ashy trail to the edge of the woods. It actually was a pleasant night, Kace thought to keep his mind off following a snake.

It seemed like Murphy really did exist. Sarah knew that her mother was always frantic about not leaving a magical fire going for too long, and Sarah was always anxiously making sire of it. Sarah was scared of snakes that were not pets, so Ashwinders she was scared of. She knew it was ridiculous yet she could not help it.

Finally the snake appeared. It seemed to prefer the warmth of the fire so it took some time for it to leave. As the last bit of it slithered out Sarah was hot on its trail. She was so intent on it that she tripped, yet she got up and brushed herself off quickly. She followed the snake to the edge of the woods.

Sarah then sawthe ashy trail it left behind and wondered why it did that. She had time to wonder as her Ashwinder (whom she named Ashley as everything deserved a name even if its life span was short) did not turn into dust so quickl. That made Sarah excited, maybe it did not need to die after all. She thought it was sad that it lived for so short

There was still time to practice the freezing charm, good!

That spell was the most difficult spell she ever had to learn! Not that she had to learn a lot of spells, she was only in her first year of course, but so far, that was the toughest. And it wasn't just the wand movement she had trouble with, it was the incantation, too. Why did those things have to be so hard!? Couldn't the person, she was suspecting Merlin, who created the things make them with one or the other? Did they both have to be hard? Eeesh.

Rhodes was still sitting on the ground by her bench, trying to freeze a few ants she had found when the Professor gave them their next set of directions. She made sure to pay close attention to what was being said, and after writing a few things down as well, she went right back to the ants. She wasn't going anywhere, not even to the edge of the most fascinating forbidden forest in the whole entire world until she got that spell down.

Or until the ants managed to sneak away from her. Whichever came first.

Rolling up her sleeves, she moved into a laying position on the ground, all while keeping her wand trained on the ants. She moved her face even closer to the bugs, so she could concentrate, and see them, they were tiny little things, and after moving her wand in the up, down, up, down, and swipe to the left motion, she gave the incantation. She even made sure to pronounce the word perfectly. "Ih-MOH-byoo-luhs. Immobulus." Jab, jab, jab, something worked!

The few little ants were frozen right in place, and since she wasn't too sure how to fix them, they were going to have to stay that way. Rhodes quickly hopped onto her feet and grabbed all her things and her shoes before running her way over to where the other were.

The young girl watched how the Ashwinder laid their eggs and it was not something Sonea liked to watch, she was no longer afraid for the creature, she now knew that it was not dangerous for her. But she still did not like it to be near it! The ashwinder laid two eggs, and both were red and she could feel the warmth from the eggs, and that was something she hadn’t expected because she was not standing close to it!

When the Ashwinder died she looked confused, the creature didn’t seemed to be afraid to die and that was something she didn’t understood, the creature had lived so shortly and now it was already death! Sonea herself would be afraid if she knew that she would die within one hour! But, even now that she didn’t understood it, she accepted it and tried to not think about it any longer. She pulled her wand, ready to use the Freezing Charm and pointed at the two eggs.

Minerva watched her fire. Now what was the next step, she checked her notes. Oh waiting for the Ashwinder to appear and leave the fire. Min stood and waited, and waited, and waited. Looking around she saw that some of the other students Ashwinder's were already leaving the fires. Looking back at her own fire there was still nothing. What if a Ashwinder didn't come out, what if it didn't appear.

Getting nervous she paced around her fire. Did she forget to do something, checking her notes again she figured she did everything she was suppose to and she just had to wait.

Getting impatient Minerva was just about to turn to the professor to say that her fire was defiantly faulty and that she needed a new one when she saw something in the fire. Looking closer she smiled the Ashwinder finally appeared and headed out of the fire. Quickly following it she watched it go to the edge of the woods. Her heart raced when she thought it might go in. Was she suppose to follow it in? She hadn't been in that forest since fourth term and wasn't wanting to go back.

Lucky the creature dropped right at the edge of the forest. Now it was time to watch it.. She was not looking forward to watching die, but if that's what they had to do.

So the plan was to create a magical creature, refuse to interact with it, and watch it die? Mo made little distressed faces as he retrieved the Floo powder. Maybe if he could just reframe the idea for himself, he wouldn't feel so bad about it? He reconsidered. The ashwinder wouldn't exist without his intervention, wouldn't live without him, and it would die after an hour regardless. He wasn't hurting it, and he couldn't save it.

Deep breaths.

He chose a pit on the far side of the group so no one could be amused by his overreacting, and Mo settled beside the fire. He ran his fingers through the Floo powder before finally tossing a pinch of it into his fire. It flared green briefly before dying down again to one of the normal yellow-orange variety.

Now he just had to wait.

Note to self, get a list of idiots and tell them all to drop dead. CLEARLY that was how things worked. She didn't even know what to make of what just happened. Yeah it was meant to die but talk about cruddy timing. You could have sworn her mouth jinxed the poor thing.

Slowly she rose to her feet and closed the distance between her and the eggs...all that was left of the Aswhinder was dust, it technically didn't count anymore.

There they were, the eggs. Time to try that spell again, the one Bee had tried teaching her earlier. She went over the steps again in her head. Just trying to make sure she didn't have any mistakes that could cost her the eggs she'd need. The swipe was especially important as she'd come to understand. There were a few minutes spent just trying to get it right then finally.

"Immobulus!"

No sparks. This was a potential success, but how would she know it it worked? Putting on protective stuff would probably mask any remaining heat. There was only one way to really know. Lex got down on her knees and reached over to poke each egg...

...

Hmmmm...

They didn't feel scorching hot or anything...

HEEEEYYYY, this means it worked, yeah???? AWESOME!!!!!

And it seemed like she had arrived just in time.

Rhodes tossed her shoes off to the side somewhere, making sure they weren't in any danger of catching on magical fire before moving over to the table that had all the supplies they were going to need. She thought, since they were going to be surrounded by so many fires, they should have had more than just gloves to protect them, but the Professor seemed like an okay lady. She must have known what she was doing. Or she pretended very well. Either way, the Slytherin picked up a pair of the not so fancy gloves, and slipping them onto her hands, she grabbed one of the glass jars and a little bit of the floo powder.

She then walked over to one of the fires and, standing as far away from it as she possibly could, because it was FIRE, reached out to add the powder to it.

Cackle, cackle.

Waiting was going to be even harder than practicing that spell. So, not wanting to pay attention to the time and how long it was going to take the Ashwinder to be born, she wondered what a marshmallow roasted over a magical fire would taste like instead..

As Kace was following his Ashwinder, he realized it was sort of a long trail. It felt like he was following it forever. It probably was only a few minutes but it felt like forever because he was hungry. He really wanted to go to dinner right now but he had to wait to finish the lesson.

He look at his notebook again.

SPOILER!!: Kace's Notebook

Choose a fire and add a few sprinkles of floo powder to it. This will create a magical fire. You may watch your fire but don't tend to it (unless you absolutely have to).

After he looked at his book, he followed the ash trail and then it found it's place in the edge of the woods.

Now he had to wait for his Ashwinder to collapse into the dust? How long will that take. He just wanted to cast the freezing charm and get this lesson over with. The snake was circling the woods and was really active. After what felt like 5 minutes, the Ashwinder was calming down and then it collapsed into the dust.

Finally!

Now he saw the Ashwinder giving birth to the eggs. Well at least it was comfortable and Kace did not want to bother the Ashwinder at all.

Minerva watched the Ashwinder. Well this was a little boring, but at the same time interesting. She wondered how long the process would take. Tapping her foot a bit, she let her mind wonder off to other things, homework, quidditch, Ethan. At the thought of him, she wondered how his work was coming and searched around to see if she could find where he went. Not knowing which fire he picked, she looked back to her Ashwinder.

Finally seeing it move a bit, she wondered if this was it. Getting a little closer she felt like she should at least say thank you or something to it before it went to ash. It seemed so sad the shortness of life it had.

Moving a little closer, but not to close she noticed warmth coming from the animal. Was it the animal or did it lay it's eggs. Just as she thought it she saw the Ashwinder move more and then saw the eggs. The Ashwinder seemed to look at her, which made Minerva feel guilty, she was standing there waiting for this creature to die. How nice was that, but before she could think any further the Ashwinder died. Pulling her wand from it's holster she got ready to freeze the eggs.

Moving closer, Min froze just as she was moving the Ashwinder turned to dust. As sad as it all made her it was a very interesting process.

Alright so he has to put the freezing charm on the eggs before touching them. He got his protective gloves on just to be safe. He did not want to touch them or collect them just yet.

As the Ashwinder was done laying the eggs, he was prepared to cast the freezing charm. "Alright the wand movement was Up, down, Up, down and a swish to the left." He learned this with Ella just before. Then the incantation was "Immobulus." He could do this. He could.

He took a deep breath and then with the Up, Down, Up, Down and a swish to the left with the incantation "Immobulus!" the eggs.....FROZE. Wow...it worked. He was a genius.

"YES!" he said and punched his fist in the air. He even did a little dance to himself. He only had to do one more step then he could go to dinner.

Okay, this was really sad. The Ashwinder will be dropping dead really soon but what's even sadder was that it was taking longer than she had expected. Meh. A little faster so we can kick things up a notch?.

She was going to admit, she wanted the creature to collapse or die now, not because she deemed it useless or whatsoever but because it was its role in the world. Everything has its purpose, right? It just so happens that this was one had to er....die young. Like someone she knew very well. Sigh. "You're going to make me wait, are you?" It'll be harder to watch that thing go off if she kept looking at it because there was the probability of deep attachment. Better to cut the ties as early as possible? Yeah, she wasn't sure either.

......

.........

Shortly though, things had taken a turn for right before her eyes, the ashwinder suddenly fell into a speckles of nothingness. And it was gone forever.

"I'm sorry." She really was. More sighing. But now that it was gone, she can start collecting its eggs. So....shaking that sad face off.....

The Ravenclaw carefully placed on the protective gloves she had at the ready before pulling out her wand. Then she crouched down next to the red ashwinder eggs but not too close since it was already radiating off heat. Right...it was time to cast the charm so she wouldn't burn herself off. "Immobulus!" Beezus muttered as she did the up-down-up-down-swipe wand movement to match the said incantation.

Susan was greatful that Min helped her with the freezing spell, she wouldn't have been able to do it with out her. Susan tried one more time before she got started to make sure she had it. Up, down, up, down, left, "Immobulus." Yes!! It worked, now Susan knew she had it for sure. So Sue went to collect the floo powder, protective gloves, and glass jars from the table. Sue walked over to a fire that was unoccupied and threw some floo powder on and patiently waited for the Ashwinder to show up.

Nigel just shrugged at her answer. He was just wondering and was okay with using the freezing charm. He grabbed some floo powder and walked over to a free fire.

He really wanted to throw all of it in the fire. But decided to do what was instructed and only put a pinch in. Nigel waited and watched with wonder as the magical fire was created and an ashwinder was born. It was pretty awesome.

He waited a little while longer to watch the ashwinder walk to the edge of the forest. Nigel could never understand why it did that knowing it was going to die in a couple minutes. Seems like a waste of a minute.

Post One- Picking a fire and adding floo powder

Alright, pick a fire and add the powder. Sky grabbed her supplies and walked over to the fire that seemed the highest. For reasons. She took a moment to examine the fire, then threw in the floo powder, watching as it turned green. Why did it have to turn green, anyway? Was due to the chemicals used to make the powder? Or did the inventor just like the color green? Maybe they'd been a Slytherin. That would be cool...

Nigel of course had his protective gloves on when he created the fire. What kind of student would be if he didn't.

Nigel looked at the trail his ashwinder made and started to follow it. This was beginning to feel like an awesome game to Nigel. Everything was more fun if it was a game. While Nigel was following his yellow brick road. He saw his ashwinder collapse into dust. It was pretty awesome but sad. Nigel did not like see things die unlike his uncle.

Ethan chuckled at Minerva's comment. "I see.. just trying to keep me in line, huh? Maybe it should be the other way around.." He laughed a little more, still clearly amused by the situation, and watched the two girls continue to practice. Then he looked up as the new professor spoke and he got up to follow as she called them over.

Walking around the side of the barn nearest the woods, his eyes scanned the row of fires as she gave her instructions. This should be easy enough, especially since he was already familiar with the procedure. Ethan walked over to the table and grabbed the necessary supplies.. he pulled on the gloves, grabbed a jar, and a handful of floo powder. The he chose an unclaimed fire near the middle.

Throwing the handful of floo powder into the fire, he watched as the flames turned green. Now to wait.. it would take time before the Ashwinder would appear, so he sat down in the grass and let his eyes focus on the flames as his mind wandered..

They were moving onto the next step already? Michael wasn't sure he had the charm perfected as yet. He seemed to get a little over zealous with the wand movement. It was kind of like sword fighting and he sure did like to do that, but he didn't think the Professor would like him running around swinging his wand around like a sword.

So, he grabbed the required equipment that he would need before following Barlow over to the fires that she had set up, Michael continued to practice the wand movement for the charm. Up, down, up, down and a swipe to the left.

Once he had settled himself down in front of a fire, he noticed Rhodes just a few feet away from him and he was so tempted to practice the charm on her. It would be so funny to see her immobolised. he chuckled to himself as he looked down at the instructions he had written down.

SPOILER!!: Instructions
- Choose a fire and add a few sprinkles of floo powder to it. This will create a magical fire. You may watch your fire but don't tend to it (unless you absolutely have to).
- Once the Ashwinder has risen from your fire, follow its ashy trail to the EDGE of the woods.

- Collect your eggs and place them in a glass jar. Label the glass jar with your name, house, and year and place it back on the table.

Picking up the floo powder, Michael sprinkled it into the fire and then moved back a little so that he could watch the fire but not be tempted to play with it.

Holstering back her wand, the brunette sixth year shifted over and turned to grab the glass jar from where she had left it a while ago. She brought it next to the eggs and slowly, carefully, one by one, she placed the eggs inside.

Phew.

So far, she wasn't falling into shambles and flames so the charm must have been really effective. After she had collected the eggs (all six of them), Beezus secured the jar's lid on and scribbled down her name - Beatrice Evangeline Castell, house - Ravenclaw, and year - Sixth year on its label. There. All done. With a rather solemn smile, she stood up and brought the jar to the table and cautiously set it down.

She pulled out the gloves and returned it and the floo powder under the table. The sun was setting low now and she was starting to get hungry too. But she had to wait for her peers to finish, right? Soooooooo, she was just going to stand right next to their gorgeous Professor and maybe even follow her around because she smelled really good while doing so. "Er, I'm finished...Professor."

Now this professor seemed to have everything in check. No Solo cups or one pair of gloves everyone had to fight over to use. Peyton put this down to the Peyton name. All the Peytons she knows - her father and her, and now the professor - were bright. Clever people, they were. Hehe.

She stood up, nodded at the professor as if saying she understood everything, GRINNED and collected what she'd need to accomplish this assignment. Deciding to choose a fire not so near the forest, Peyton settled with a nice one in the center of the other fires.

After putting on the gloves, Peyton gingerly threw some floo powder into the crackling flames, imagining for a while that she a pixie the muggles believed in. Then she watched the fire. She wasn't allowed to play with fire at home because things happened, but no one needed to know that bit of information here.

INNER CACKLE.

Mo didn't have to wait long for the last logs of his fire to crumble into burning coals. Just moments later, an ashy snake raised its head above a chunk of unburned log, its slender body following a moment later. The ashwinder was born. It was beautiful, especially when he caught a glint of those red burning eyes.

"Hey... snake. Erm... Steve the snake," Mo whispered, although he didn't move from his spot by the fire. Still, he felt a LITTLE better now that the snake had a name. It was like it really existed now.

The snake began to move away from the fire, and Mo rose slowly to follow. It crossed a patch of dry grass at one point, and Mo carefully tamped his foot onto the patch just in case it was liable to burst into flames. The snake meandered for a while, slowly making its way across open ground until it arrived just at the edge of the Forbidden Forest.
