"They cure ague," Alice informed Theo indirectly, raising her hand anyway, even though she was more elaborating on his answer than actually speaking to the professor. She gave a bit more, though, just so that it didn't seem like she was taking Thinsley's, because she was clever enough not to need to bounce things off of HIM, thanks. "Ashwinders are classified by the Ministry as XXX, which means competent wizards can cope, so that's why we can deal with them in class, right?" Also, who'd want to harvest the hairs of a pygmy puff? She gave curious looks to Nessie while listening to everyone else's thoughts (because lolol she was NOT getting near one of those hairballs, k?). |

Poor ashwinders. Their only purpose was to lay their eggs. |
Oh, hey! She was right on track! Exactly right on track. There was a smug look on Rhodes' face as she turned towards Michael and stuck her tongue out at him. Her answer was so much better than his, and going by the punch that he had just gave himself in the arm, he must have thought the same thing. She was going to tease him about that later, she was. First, though, she needed to answer the next question, and as she turned away from Michael and back towards the Professor, her hand was already raised. Ashwinders. Who didn't know about them!? "They are grey in color." A very boring color at that. As for their eggs.. Rhodes raised her other hand, so that both of them were now in the air. Two questions, two raised hands. It made sense. "Ashwinder eggs are like, really, really expensive if you try to buy them in Knockturn Alley." |

Ashwinders... Ashwinders... what did he know about Ashwinders? Not much, truth be told. Apart from the love potion bit and the bit about how they come about. What was the difference between a magical fire and a normal fire? ... No, now was not the time. He shook his head and raised his hand, his eyes still on the Professor. "Like the others have said, they come from the leftover bits of a magical fire that's been left unattended," Pause. "And... because of that... Ashwinders can be found worldwide. Anywhere!" And he had nothing else on the eggs bit. |
What could be found and Ashwinders and their eggs? Tag sat in his spot for a minute or two and thought up some sort of reasonable answer his little leprechaun brain could think of. Umm, can't the ashwinder egg be used in potions, to make love potions, if they are frozen that is. Do they have to be frozen in order for them to be useful in a love potion? Or can they not be frozen and still be useful in the potion?" You know, just curiousty. Just like anyone else would have. |
Sophie was just sitting around and apparently not paying enough attention to answer the first question. Woops... When she realised she had indeed missed a question, the Hufflepuff sat up straighter and eyed the new professor, trying her best not to daydream any more. GASP!! They were actually producing Ashwinders! WHOA! That was brilliant!! Because that meant they were using spells and whatnot. Obviously! Beaming, the girl raised her hand. "Ashwinders are created if we leave magical fire burning for a while!" Maaagicaaaaaaal fire! Magic! Spells! YES!! Sophie didn't care much about the egg it was laying or anything. Nor was she that worried about having many snakes slithering around. Slithering. Slytherin. Geddit? Hehehehehehehehehehehehehe! That was brilliant! Could they start yet? |
Nigel knew more about the potions aspect than the creature aspect. But whatever it all had to do with ashwinders. Plus everyone else was already saying what ashwinders were. So he was going to talk about the eggs. "Well, the eggs are born from the embers of an unattended magical fire. Plus frozen ashwinder eggs can be found love potions and they can be used as an antidote to ague." |
Oh, ashwinders? Mo actually glanced around like the ashy little bits of dirty on the ground might have been/still were/could become ashwinders. No luck? No fair. He gave the professor a broad grin at her approval of his answer, and also because she appeared to appreciate acromantulas like he did. Giant spiders? Who didn't love THAT? Mo raised his hand at her question. "Ashwinders are born from magical fires, but they have really short lives. They only live an hour before turning into little piles of ash and cinders. That's sad... can you even do much living in an hour? I mean, some people don't live properly in about 90 years, so how much living can you really fit into an hour?" And now... he sort of wanted to figure it out. Fit as many awesome things into one hour as possible. Also... he glanced at Tag. "And I think the eggs have to be frozen on account of being so hot. You can't use them otherwise." |

West thought about it and then raised his hand, thinking of books he had read. "Once I read about how Ashwinder eggs caused the Great Hall to get set on fire. They used to do pantomimes here at Hogwarts, and this one Professor, Kettleburn, had an enlarged Ashwinder which got used to be the worm in the story of the Fountain of Fair Fortune, and it laid its eggs and they set fire to the floorboards." Paaause. "I wonder if there are still scorchmarks?" |
Kommoto listened amazed. the last question he knew, but he had never heard of Ashwinders. Still, they sounded pretty cool. He wondered if he could get one. A fire sounded fun. |
Kace was hearing what the professor was having to say and then he heard her ask about Ashwinder's. He remembered hearing about them from his grandmother. Then he raised his hand and answered what his grandma told him, "Professor i know a Ashwinder is a serpent that is pale-grey and has GLOWING red eyes. I think they are kind of creepy if you ask me." he said agreeing with his own opinion. Maybe she will feel the same way? |
So many eager hands raised in the air.. Ethan listened as half the class told what they knew about Ashwinders and their eggs, searching his mind for anything else he knew or might add. He knew the eggs were found in potions, though most of the ones who mentioned it seemed to be stuck on love potions. He eyed a couple of them.. was that potion really on everyone's mind? "The eggs are found in other potions, too.." he said, hand half raised as he wasn't really providing an answer, more like responding to all the remarks about love potions. Really..? Who needed one of those? But he knew proper classroom decorum and didn't want to speak out of turn, hence the casual, semi-raised hand. Then he glanced over at Mo and some Gryffindor boy as they debated the proper handling temperature of Ashwinder eggs. "Frozen for love potions, sure," he said, still finding it funny that that's what they were most known for. "But they don't have to be completely frozen for certain other potions.. like the Fameludos Draught we did last term.. the eggs were chilled, not frozen. The normal temperature is far too hot for handling though.." Like serious burns there. |
SPOILER!!: Professor! "Of course not." Yep, Dylan was still grinning stupidly at her...and was not ashamed because of it. Perhaps Care of Magical Creatures would be his new favorite lesson...Maybe... .... Were they REALLY? The Slytherin stared at her for a moment before raising his hand some more. "Professor, they live for an hour.....and die after laying their eggs." So, girls would need to get a hold of themselves...lest they have emotional episodes in this lesson. |
Ashwinders? Those fire snake things??? Aquila gulped. Egg collecting she can handle—heck that’s one of the chores she has at home, although not exactly the reptilian variety. It’s the possibility of SNAKES that was making her shiver in her robes. Snake symbolisms are cool. Live snakes?... not so much. So what can she say about the question? "They're dangerous..." she squeaked. Whether they live for a minute or a thousand years, snakes are all the same to her. |
Ashwinders? Did she mean those weird creatures, that only live an hour? Nerida raised her hand and said "They rise from the embers of a dying fire and slitherrr off into a dark corner to lay their eggs... Leaving behind only an ashy trail behind. Ashwinders only live for an hour and will collapse into a pile of dust after they have laid their eggs. Ashwinder eggs are red and give off intense heat. If frozen they can be used in a Love Potion or eaten whole as a cure for ague." |
SPOILER!!: Professor Mika beamed when she heard that indeed her idea was a harmless one. Harmless ideas were great when they were talking about harvesting things from various creatures. She leaned forward and listened as Professor Barlow explained what they were going to be harvesting. Ashwinder eggs. That was so cool. Especially since they were used in Potions all the time - and were pretty interesting. Raising her hand the girl decided to give the most basic of information about the snake itself. "Well Ashwinders are ash colored snakes and they are called Ashwinders because of their coloring and the way that they move." She smiled. "Also, they should never have an engorging spell cast on them because they will explode in a shower of ash and embers - the eggs must be frozen quickly otherwise they could set things around them on fire because they are very hot." Yeah she knew this stuff that was basic. They'd learned about the fire-causing-abilities a few terms before in Potions class. |
Don't hesitate. Tora raised her hand tentatively. "Professor?" she asked. "I heard some of the other students mention that the eggs can cure ague... what even is ague exactly?" She knew it must sound like a stupid question but she just had to know. After all, she was a first year. Any stupid questions could just be brushed off as 'oh she's a first year'. |

They will be working on Ashwinders? Those fiery serpents? Those pitiful creatures who only live for an hour only to lay their eggs? The sacrifice they do for their hatchlings! They give up their lives for their children. They.....yeah, okay. Too much drama going on a Castell's head. Of course she wasn't going to put on a theatrical demeanor and give that kind of answer to Professor Barlow. Too bad for those who're expecting. The Ravenclaw's hand went up, "Professor, Ashwinders are called as such because "Ash" comes from the color of the creature itself which is pale-grey and ashes are connected to fire which exactly where these creatures come from. Magical fires, specifically. And "Winder" because of the sideway movement of some snakes like the rattler. " Snakes! She loved snakes....sort of. Especially one certain snake who was grinning stupidly at their Professor. Heh. "Now basically, because they come from magical fires....ashwinders are found everywhere but if they happen to lay their eggs in a residence, the eggs will ignite and naturally, burn down the building." So....gotta be careful with those magical fires. "The eggs, maa'm....are red in color and give off intense heat but Freezing Charms can be used for it so that it can be utilized by other means." Her classmates already provided the eggs' uses so she stopped on that note. |
SPOILER!!: Pretty Professor Lady XD Woah. Okay, so here was the thing. Ascanius knew that she was speaking words, but they all seemed extremely abnormal to his Muggle knowledge and stuff. True, he had gone to Alma Aleron and Durmstrang and stuff. Didn't mean he paid attention though. Shrug. So she needed to speak a tad slower. She had the pretty face thing down PAT... so he could pay attention just fine. Now time to make sense, yeah? Perfect. And of course, he was just gonna listen. No idea what was going on. Savvy? |

"We should check it out." Would be kinda cool to see the scorchmarks if they were still there. Would the professor let them go check it out at the end of the lesson? It'd be fun. |
Ashwinders. Brillant. Sarcasm intended. Hopefully, the ickle firsties would not be allowed to handle them, because the last thing Hogwarts needed right now was a huge fire. Heck, the firsties shouldn't even be allowed to start the fires. Also, was this going to be one of things that they would be selling in Hogsmeade? 'Cause Sky didn't think it was right that her and fellow students were being used to make the school's money back. If Hogwarts was that hard up for cash, the Headmistress should be trying to make it back. Sell off her expensive |
Oh, she knew this answer! One of her maids at home had told her a story about them and Sonea sure that she could answer this question right! She raised her hand and answered calmly the question, “An Ashwinder is a thin creature, he has a pale-grey body with glowing red eyes, I have heard that they were serpents and their eggs are red.” This was all what Sonea knew from what her maid had told her once and she hoped that she had remembered it correct. She sat down again now that she had answered the question and could only hope that she had done it right this time. |
Ashwinder and Ashwinder eggs. So it's safe to say that today this class will be handling ashwinder slash ashwinder eggs, that's pretty cool. Juliet is up for ANY creature at all, any kind. So this just made her happy. Raising her hand she answered "I have read that they are remains from any magical fire, and the serpent looks pale grey with red eyes. If these serpents lay their eggs they will only live for an hour and then turn to dust." she took a deep breath before continuing "Ashwinder eggs are color red. They are hot and can be flammable." |
Ahh. Ashwinders. Clement had read about those last year, when he was preparing for his owls. It had worked out pretty well, he'd passed. Which was what he was happy about. And he was doing his NEWT in it. So. That had to mean he would good at it. Now to just answer the question. He knew it. Obviously. He hadn't forgotten everything that he had learn over the summer. Because that would just be stupid, and a very hufflepuff thing to do. And he was a Slytherin, so he knew pretty well not to forget anything that he had learnt. "Ashwinders are serpents that are created from fires which are left to burn unchecked." Which meant he wasn't going to be leaving any fires unchecked in the future. "Their eggs are red, and give of intense heat, but they can be frozen to be used as a cure for ague or in love potions." So freezing them would be worth the effort so it seemed. Well if he knew what Ague was it probably would be. |
