The first Care of Magical Creatures lesson of the term is being held during the time of day that comes between afternoon and dinnertime. The skies are just beginning to darken, but only barely so. By definition, it's still daytime.
A makeshift classroom has been set up in the vicinity of the barn and sanctuary area. Benches are set in rows spread out before the new Care of Magical Creatures professor. Professor Barlow leans against her own makeshift desk, polishing off the last of an ice cream cone and awaiting the prompt arrival of her students.
OOC: The lesson will officially begin sometime this evening. The thread is open now for you to post your character arriving. It's up to you to decide whether or not your character should spend this time chatting, but just be aware that you never quite know how Barlow will react to that. Choose wisely and have fun!

How protective were these gloves, exactly? Alice regarded them warily, not wanting to touch the eggs in case her spell was faulty and they were still burning. She'd cast the spell numerous times on each one, just to be sure, but she needed her hands, okay? For things. Instead of extending her hands to pick them up, she knelt down and gently nudged the rim of the jar under the pile, sliding the glass beneath the eggs. Once she was sure the entire nest was inside, the fifth year slipped a hand under the jar and turned it upright, letting them sink to the bottom of the container.
As she leaned over the top and peered in, scrutinizing the eggs, Alice started wondering if they could actually hatch. They couldn't, right? Seeing as they would probably combust spontaneously or something. What would it look like if they cut up a frozen one, though? And examined its insides? Did it have insides? She considered it all as she gingerly picked up the jar and headed back over to the class to grab a label and fill it out.

After placing it on the jar, she set it on the table and returned to her seat, hand going up as soon as she had. "Has anyone ever tried opening one of the eggs, Professor? Since I'm assuming they can't hatch, since they'd burst into flames too quickly or whatever, but can you cut up and separate a frozen one, like examine it and all?"

Well, she'd gotten off her butt before people had noticed that she'd been on it in the first place. Following the Ashwinder, she walked all the way to the edge of the woods and actually freaked out a little bit. Merlin, they weren't allowed in that forest. It was called the Forbidden Forest for a reason!
STOOOOP, LITTLE ASHWINDER!
Oh. It didn't plan to go into the forest, just sit by the edge of it. And sit by the edge of it they did, both Elise and the Ashwinder. She was supposed to wait for it to collapse to dust, yes? It was doing that, slowly, with bits of ash flaking off every now and then.
Unfortunately, it was taking a tiny bit too long and Elise's eyes were heavy. They eventually drooped closed, causing her to nod quite violently and waking herself back up. Thoroughly embarassed and blushing furiously, she tried opening her eyes wider and staring at the Ashwinder.
After what seemed like an eternity, it finally seemed to stop glowing, turning almost completely ashen and then with a small crash, tumbled to the ground and formed a pile of ash. Great, so the eggs were under that and she had to freeze them next. She was ready, wand and all.

Once the eggs were froze, Min took the lid off her jar and walked over to the eggs. Placing the lid in her robe pocket and holstering her wand, she bent down and picked up the first egg. Placing it carefully in the jar. She didn't want to know what would happen if the egg would break. Once that egg was safely in the jar, she turned and picked up the second egg. Placing it carefully with the first egg.
Once both eggs were in the jar, Min took the lid out of her pocket and put it on the jar again. Going over to the table she made out a label

Pulling out her wand once more, Minerva stuck the label on her jar. Once the label was clearly on the jar, she placed it on the table. Heading back to her seat she waited for further instructions from Professor Barlow.
With gloves on and eggs under the freezing spell, Ethan bent down to pick them up. One by one, he placed them carefully in the jar so as not to crack them. Once the jar was full, he walked back over to the table and pulled out a quill, then set about filling out the label.

Once finished, he set the jar on the table with the others and waited for the next instructions. And by next instructions he meant dismissal because he was ready to eat dinner now and was fairly sure it was about that time.. He took a quick glance at his watch before looking at some of the other students as they completed their tasks as well. Yep, very shortly..

Kat retrieved some protective gloves before deciding to even touch the Ashwinder eggs. She might burn herself (but since the Freezing Charm has already been casted on them, she could FREEZE to death but that's not even scary). With gloves on, Kat squatted a bit to get nearer to the frozen Ashwinder eggs and collected them one by one and placed them carefully inside the jar. She couldn't afford to crack an egg open, you know. Once it was collected, Kat labelled her jar with the eggs in it.

1. Choose a fire and add a few sprinkles of floo powder to it. This will create a magical fire. You may watch your fire but don't tend to it (unless you absolutely have to).
2. Once the Ashwinder has risen from your fire, follow its ashy trail to the EDGE of the woods.
3. Wait for the Ashwinder to collapse to dust.
4. Cast the Freezing Charm on the eggs BEFORE touching or collecting them. You should wear protective gloves as an added precaution.

Harvey had his gloves on and he decided to have a go at picking up the eggs now, they didnt feel as hot but were still pretty warm even with the gloves on. He picked up the first egg and gently put it into the jar as he didnt want the egg to crack or anything. He then picked up the second and put it into the jar as carefully as he did the first careful not to damage either of them. He then noticed that there wasmt too much space for a third so he moved the other two around so that he could fit the third in. After a little more moving around he thought he had enough space to fit in the third. He then put in the third egg and made his way back to the table and put a label with his name on it.

It felt weird to write that he was in the sixth year! Not cause it was the nearing the end of school but cause he would be of age soon meaning he could do anything he wanted! And boy he couldnt wait for his birthday. With that Harvey put the jar onto the table, there job done! He then just stood there with his hands in his pocket waiting for the class to be over now.
You have bewitched me body and soul, And I love- I love- I love you
Mack could hardly believe she had produced the Ashwinder to begin with but now, it had sucessfully laid its eggs as well. Remebering what Professor Barlow on the importance of quickly freezing them and doing so before touching she whipped out her wand pointing it at the multiple eggs that now were in the space where he Ashwinder had collapsed only moments before "Immobulus" she said clearly, but wasn't sure it was enough so she repeated it a few more times, adding emphasis each time.
"Immobulus"
"Immobulus"
She smiled as she pulled out the protective gloves from her pocket and put them on, once they were secure she also took out the glass jar they were to put the egg into and opened it before placing it on the ground next to the eggs.
Haruka watched as the Ashwinder's time ran out after laying it's eggs. Looking at the pile of ash, she frowned slightly, sad for the poor creature. She shook her head to clear away those thoughts and got back to work. "Alright," she thought out loud. "Time to freeze these eggs." Recalling the spell the Professor had taught the class earlier, Haruka took out her wand and pointed it at the eggs. "Immobulus!"

Okaaay. So he needed to look for a fire. He glanced around, before approaching one that wasn't filled with loads of people. He didn't want to be bumping elbows with someone. Not around a fire. Because they would get burnt. Or set on fire. And he really didn't want to be the boy that was on fire. He was pretty sure that would kind of make him burn. And that would not be too good. Because he'd end up in the hospital wing, and not earning lots of points out here. So he was glad he managed to get a fire that was not surrounded by students. He crouched down, deciding against sitting on his bum on the ground. If he did that he might not have wanted to get back up, and that would not be good at all. So crouching was good.
Now he needed to make the fire into a magical one. Nodding, he added a fire sprinkles of the floo powder to it. This was a much better way of using the powder, rather than using it for flooing. It didn't get all stuck in his hair, and stuff. Now he needed to watch his fire. It looked pretty, like the one in the the common room. But this one he had to make sure he didn't tend. That would be okay. Because he really had no clue how to tend a fire actually. So...that would be okay. Nowww to wait.

Nigel picked up the the eggs and put them in the jar. They were awesome eggs. He now need the materials the label the jar.
They walked back the main area were class was to get into his bag. That was were all his writing material was. It would make him an excellent student if he brought writing instruments with him wherever he goes. But Nigel keeps them in his bag. Why Not? He does bring his bag everywhere. Now back to labeling his jar.

Yea, so...Dylan was getting started a tad late. He'd delayed himself with helping others learn the spell...but that was okay. He didn't mind and would've rather them know it and not hurt themselves or anyone else in the immediate area...Plus, he could work fast and efficient. That's how Slytherins did it and all.
First things first...he needed to pick a fire.
Approaching the line of fires that had been set up by Professor Barlow, he chose one closest to the woods and went to get some floo powder. It was on that table, yes? Oh, and gloves and jars. Dylan had his own gloves, though...Kept those in his back pocket at all times...
Walking over, he retrieved floo powder and a jar...and then went to sprinkle it into the awaiting fire. Sprinkle......sprinkle.........sprinkle......When the flames turned that tell tale emerald green, Dylan stepped back and waited. It should be any minute now....

This was kind of boring. Clement frowned, staring into the fire, and getting a little distracted. That was probably bad. If his fire got too untended too, it might like set all the grounds on fire, and that would just be no good at all. So he shook his head, blinked a few times, and refocused. There you go. Oooh. Just in time actually, because a Ashwinder was rising up from the fire. He was glad that hadn't taken too long, because he was already getting bored. Hopefully something more interesting would go on next time. Though things were getting a little more interesting now. He wasn't having to watch a fire anymore. So now he had other things to do.
Oooh. His Ashwinder was trailing off towards the woods now. Good thing he hadn't sat down on his bum, because he really would not have wanted to get up now at all. Pushing up off of his thighs, he stood up, and carefully followed the ashy trail over to the edge of the forest. He had to bend down a little, because it was kind of hard to see. Maybe he was going a little blind. Anyway, he kept his eyed peeled, and kept on following his Ashwinder.

Here was the ONE problem with female Professors. Sure, sure, they were awful nice to look at and stuff, but they were distracting. So, yeah, Ascanius had missed EVERYTHING that she had said and by that he meant EVERYTHING.
It was all good though. He had this under control. See, all he had to do was tip his head to the left a little and snag someone else's notes, which was exactly what he did. And suddenly everything made a LOT more sense. They were working with fire. Smirk. He could TOTALLY do that.
Bounding off, he picked a fire- one near the end so no one was hovering over him and stuff- and then he went and grabbed some floo powder to make stuff go boom. Heh. This was kind of like a Shakespearean play, yeah? All of them throwing powder into a fire. All they needed was a sick monologue and they'd be all set.
Anyway, he grabbed some powder and a jar and went and sprinkled it in the fire.

Merlin, this was so boring.
Just staring at fire wasn't fun. She really wanted to poke it with a stick or something, especially since it was all green and stuff from the floo powder. Green fire was cool, y'know. Not the cool kinda cool because obviously fire was hot, but the cool kinda cool. As in, awesome. Totally awesome. It made sense. Really it did. At least, in HER mind. She understood it quite-
Wait! Was that movement?!
Penelope blinked a couple times to clear her slightly blurry vision and managed to catch sight of something scurrying out of the fire. A snake-looking thing. Ashwinder!
"Wait!" Slow down, stupid snake! She had feet to use, she couldn't just slither on her belly too. Standing quickly, she followed it an its ashy trail at a brisk pace.

How long was this egg laying business supposed to take?
It had felt like she had been looking away for forever when finally, she just couldn't take it anymore. Closing her eyes, just in case the Ashwinder wasn't finished, Rhodes slowly turned back around to where it was. She peeked one eye open, followed by the other, and even though she thought it would have been cool to actually see the snake crumble into dust, she was slightly glad that she hadn't. Especially since there were a few eggs left behind..
But, she wasn't going to think about that, no way. She scooted herself closer to the pile of ash, and hovering her face right over the three eggs that were there, she pulled out her wand. The heat from the eggs was just a little.. hot, but it didn't last long after moving her wand in the correct up, down, up, down, swipe to the left motion, and after saying the incantation, "Immobulus."
Rhodes made sure the lid of her jar was off before she gave the eggs a little poke, poke, poke with her gloved finger, just to make sure they were cool enough to pick up.

Up down up down swipe to the left. Okay. He could do this.
Except he needed to get moving otherwise he would be left behind and that could mean he'd be late for dinner which could mean that all the ice cream could be gone. He did not like the sound of that.
Alec took a deep breath, nodded to himself and then moved over towards the table the Professor had gestured towards earlier. He grabbed a pair of protective gloves along with a jar and some floo powder. He turned away from the table and started walking around, looking for a fire that hadn't been taken yet.
Hurry hurry hurry... to the nearest free fire.
He came to a stop right near a fire and looked at it... then at the floo powder in his hands. You just to sprinkle it in, yeah? Nothing too extravagant? Nodnodnod... and sprinkle! Sprinkle some more... and a little bit more... Was it just him or was this a bit like cooking? He was sure he had seen his Dad add spice to takeaway curry in the same way before.
OH AND LOOK! It was turning emerald! That was... new.
What was he meant to do now? Just wait...?

Okay, so now they were just going to watch the fire like a bunch of, ahem. This was boring and here he thought that this class might have ACTUALLY held his attention. Well then, live and learn, yeah? Ugh, this was disappointing. Bored face.
And then some really weird stuff starting happening. The fire became really weird and something was stirring in it. What the heck? Jeez. This was getting a little too Twilight Zone for him. Weird magic and stuff.
He knew that magic was important to people here and stuff, but couldn't they just get a dog and be done with it? Yeah. He liked that plan better and stuff.
And them some creepy little bugger came out of the fire and was going toward the Forrest. Uh huh. Well then, he supposed have a nice trip? Psh, ugly snake type thing. NO WAIT! Directions dictated he had to follow the Ashwinder thing. So that was what he was going to do exactly. Follow the ashes.

Stalkyy. Stalkyy. Stalkyy. This was a bit easier now. Maybe he'd just been a little sleepy when he had been walking at first. Because he really could see better now. He smiled, walking after the trail. It was very ashy indeed. But then the Ashwinder had come from a fire, so he really hadn't expected anything else. Could it move faster though? It was sooooo slow. Clement liked fast things, he wasn't into the slow things. He figured giving it a little kick, was really not going to work. It was only ash after all. So he was stuck waiting for it to get to the edge of the wood. Finaallly after what seemed like a year they were finally at the edge of the wood. Clement was glad, because he really thought he was going to get old before they'd gotten to the edge.
Now he just had to wait. Wait for it to collapse to dust. It had to die. What a poor creature. Having babies, and then dying. That didn't seem very fair at all. Oh well. Cle didn't really need to be worrying about some creature. He had more important things to think about. He only hoped that the Ashwinder wouldn't take forever to like collapse into dust. Luckily he was in luck, because a few seconds later and the creature had collapsed into dust.

She could stay!! YAAAY!! Now she was much less likely to have her brain go dead while she waited. Honestly, activities like this weren't meant for her, she needed to be constantly moving and there was no more of that after she told the thing to drop dead and it actually did. SERIOUSLY, of all the times for something to actually listen to her. UGH.
Lex kept her eyes on his fire, waiting for the Ashwinder to show up. This, this was taking longer than she remembered...or maybe it was her growing impatience and want for ice-cream--
Hm...?
She looked to Dylan, pondering his question. "Nothing yet...nothing I can think of...Oh!!! Except just the other day Professor Vinteren taught me how to blow stuff up!!!" And now she was grinning at the memory. But they were moving now because the serpent had risen!! This was one of the most action packed parts of the lesson...and that was saying a lot. Didn't matter though because they were walking and talking so she could keep talking to him. GRIN
"You should have seen me!! I made stuff blow up on the first try!! It was epic!!! And there was rapid fire and I didn't fail at that either!!"
Just how far was this Ashwinder going???

Wait... wait... wait...
This was really weird because all he had to do was stand there and wait for the Ashwinder to rise but... he couldn't help but just stare at the fire. It was weird to see an emerald green fire. Really... really weird. It was as if everything else was blacked out for the time being and all he could see was the fi-
AARGH!
SOMETHING WAS COMING OUT OF THE- ... Oh, wait, no, that was meant to happen. He blinked a couple of times, trying to get rid of the weird dark circles he was seeing from the fire and trying to focus on the creature that was scurrying out instead. And he was meant to... follow this creature, right? Wasn't that sort of creepy?
...
He shrugged and followed the trail the creature was leaving behind, trying not to make any noise himself. When the creature came to a stop right near the edge of the forest, so did Alec and he just... watched. And waited. For the creature to do what it was meant to do. Because he was meant to be creepy like that.
Text Cut: The tasks!
Choose a fire and add a few sprinkles of floo powder to it. This will create a magical fire. You may watch your fire but don't tend to it (unless you absolutely have to).
Once the Ashwinder has risen from your fire, follow its ashy trail to the EDGE of the woods.
Wait for the Ashwinder to collapse to dust.
Cast the Freezing Charm on the eggs BEFORE touching or collecting them. You should wear protective gloves as an added precaution.
Collect your eggs and place them in a glass jar. Label the glass jar with your name, house, and year and place it back on the table.

Merlin, this thing was fast for something that didn't have any feet. Penelope briefly wondered what it would be like to live like that, with no hands and feet and just moving around on your belly. Kinda weird. Probably wouldn't be able to play Quidditch or anything else useful or fun. Poor thing didn't get to do any of that. How sad.
Finally she reached the edge of the forest where she'd seen it disappear into. Right there was where it would be laying its eggs and then collapsing, right?
Penelope got down on her knees again to peer under the bush in front of her, squinting for a moment and then widening her eyes upon seeing bright red eggs there and a small pile of ashes that was once an ashwinder. She backed up a little after a moment, blinking at the intense heat she felt it giving off. Merlin's beard.
Okay... Okay.
Time to use that spell now, right?

Nigel started to write down his name on the jar and all the other information that was needed. Once that was down he held it back and looked at it.

Perfect. Nigel started to walk back and set his jar on the table with everyone elses that finished the assignment. That was pretty fun. Plus Nigel had never even seen an ashwinder before today.

Right, choosing a fire. Derry eyed the closest free one, this was as good as any, right? Right. She put her protective gloves on and collected some floo powder from the jar before walking over to the fire. Right. Now what?
Just sprinkling the floo powder on? She'd never used it before... interesting. She held her hand out and sprinkled the powder into the fire until it turned green. Was this how they made the fires in the common room green? Because it was pretty...
Now to wait. Derry watched the fire closely, ready for any sign of movement.
