Default Charms II

Another chilly Winter day left the Charms room a bit cool and drafty, but that's the way Ivy liked it. It made sure the students stayed awake and alert, rather than warm and cozy and sleepy.

The classroom looks quite different than normal today. The desks and chairs are gone. Instead, almost two dozen single doorways placed around the room in several rows. The professor is standing at the front of the room with her own doorway just a few feet away from her desk. On the chalkboard is a simple message:

"Find a partner and pick a door.
Quietly."

Class has now officially started! Please do not RP your students coming into class late, just RP them as thought they've been there all along. Don't want to lose points, now do ya!

Class Progression:
1. Welcome to class / What are we doing?

Hmpf, so her answer was not right? Fine, but she still thought that she had given a smart answer, so she was satisfied with it. But still, she WAS disappointed that they weren’t learning about the locker charm, she was really curious about this spell and she wanted to know it, not that she would use it to search and open the rooms where she wasn’t allowed to be…

"What is a Intruder Charm…" Muttered Sonea slowly to herself while she watched the professor. She hasn’t heard about this spell before and had never read anything about this spell in one of her books, so she was curious what for spell they would learn today. She had of course a idea what the spell did, but she didn’t knew it for sure, but because of the name she guessed that it has to do something with intruders and maybe to prevent intruders to open a door? But again, this was a guess so she said nothing. She also didn’t knew the other question and decided to just listen to the answers from the others before she would speak.

"... The Intruder Charm." See? Much more interesting than locking and unlocking doors and cleaning the classroom. "Though similar, the Intruder Charm is not to be mistaken for the Caterwauling Charm," she explained. "Can someone tell me what the Intruder Charm does? And what is the difference between the Intruder Charm and the Caterwauling Charm?"
Interesting! This was waaaay better than charms to unlock or lock doors. It was! Jory raised a hand. "The Intruder Charm sets of an alarm or allows the caster to become aware if someone has entered through a door.'' He paused. Or maybe a window, too? ''A Caterwauling Charm causes an alarm to go off also, however, for the er borders of a certain area.''

Eliza was pretty sure the others were correct about the differences in the spells. She'd heard of the town-wide one before, so it made sense that there would be a personal sized version too. She raised her hand and said, "Professor, I agree. The intruder alarm is for single homes while the other is for a larger area like a neighborhood or town." And now she glanced back to the doors, wondering what the proximity would be. She wanted to know if you could set it for different triggers and distances, but she didn't want to ask questions out of turn today, especially with a new professor whose reactions were unpredictable to her still.

Oh. The intruder charm. Now it makes a lot more sense. Though the partner bit was still a bit foggy. Nigel raised his hand and gave his view on the difference between the two.

"The Intruder Charm detects intruders and sounds an alarm. Similar to a muggle alarm system. The Caterwauling Charm on the other hand can be used on large entities. Say like Hogsmeade for example. If anyone stepped foot in Hogsmeade after a certain time. The alarm or high-pitched shriek would go off."

That shriek must be really loud when using the caterwauling charm.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

NOT TALKING ABOUT ICE CREAM ANYMORE?!

Daichi POUTED at those words as his gaze went towards Alexa. What would she think of that? Actually, he was long happy that he found someone else who had a strange obsession with ice cream these days. How could anyone NOT talk about ice cream?! That was like the hardest thing he EVER had to do... so that was why the Slytherin began to shift on his feet restlessly though not annoying anyone with it.

And even his answer had been wrong... Well, Daichi thought it had been a really smart answer so he deserved his points back hmpf! But when the Professor threatened with extra homework he quickly shut up. Not that he had said anything which was a miracle but figurally speaking. He did not want to make extra homework, he had it busy enough....with Prefect stuff? NO! Telling the school how awesome ice cream was and that they should all spread the happiness? YES!

"An intruder charm detects intruders inside a room and will sound an alarm. The difference between the Intruder charm and the Caterwauling charm is that the latter is used in larger ranges and is therefore louder"

Sophie listened to what the others were answering and kept thinking of one detail about the Caterwauling Charm, so she raised her hand. "Professor, I think the Caterwauling Charm not only works in larger areas than the Intruder Charm, but it can also be set to work in certain times?" The badger said, even though she wasn't 100% positive about this fact. "I mean, I read that during the Second Wizarding War, for example, it was set in Hogsmeade to go off whenever someone went out after curfew."

She lowered her hand and frowned slightly as she pondered some more. "And since the Intruder Charm works as a Muggle burglar alarm, it must work the entire time!" Or something. Blink. It sort of made sense in her head. She looked at Blue, who was right next to her, and smiled!shrugged.

Oh. She’d kiiiinda hoped they’d be doing some incantation that’d make the room switch or something. Like you step outside your bedroom and then bada bing, bada boom, it’s your living room. Much cooler than a Caterwauling Charm. But she kept silent on her opinions and wrote down some other answers really slowly so her notes were lovely and neat.

Oh and,

"You're better off using the Caterwauling outside because it muuuuch louder and screechier," kinda like a certain head girl compared to a banshee.

Blue side-glanced at Sophie who’d smiled at her and then DING DING DING DING DING. If she were in a cartoon a lightbulb would’ve lit up over her head. “Do you,” she mouthed at the brunette, pointing a finger at her. “want to be,” smiley!face. Because she didn’t have a mime for ‘want’ “my,” she pointed at herself. “partner?” The eaglette awkwardly shook her own hand before giving the Hufflepuff a thumbs up.

Eh, eh?

TIME TO PANIC.

Theo didn't have a partner, and apparently no one was queueing up to be it either. Ohhhhh, okay. He raised his chin up in the air and made it dramatically obvious that he didn't have a partner. Just in case there was someone who was in the same boat. He did NOT fancy being the professor's partner...

He'd never heard of the intruder charm, and actually, learning how to unlock/lock doors sounded much more interesting. But Theo raised his hand and took a guess like everyone else. "Does it block intruders from getting in?" That would be much more useful than some lousy alarm.

She was ALICE'S partner. Alice's.

Did they need a door now? Ariana had one, right?

Oakey, Oakey where are you oakey! Now, was Not the time to be late to class, she kept watching the door watching.. watching.. why was he so late?
Still watching the door the girl folded her hands over her chest, she was cold okay and still watched the door, not even noticing the Gryffindor captain walking up and claiming her, she was looking for Oakey, kay.

Alohomora, and Colloportus were safe guesses, but you could use those on any lock, so why go through the trouble of setting up free standing doors in the classroom. Portals, would be an awesome thing to learn, but he had done that in Ancient Runes under Professor Jenkins a few years ago...Oakey was stumped, an Oak Stump...He still needed a Partner.

OH Oh OH there he was! she put a hand up a bit to silently wave him over to her, before she saw him just go over to another door and ignore her did he just IGNORE her? "No, we will not be learning locking charms today. Those are, or should be basic, firsthand knowledge already. And if they're not... well, your fellow students just told you what they were, so figure it out." She wasn't going to waste valuable class time on silly locking charms. Pff.

Why was he smiling? And giggling? Merlin...

..... *deadpan*

"No."

Sighhhhh. "No. No, no, no, and if anyone talks about ice cream again, they'll get three times as much homework. Understood?" Ivy glared at Alexa and Daichi and then everybody else. Did they not understand the meaning of quiet?

Alice in Wonderland....? "This isn't Muggle Studies." So, in other words... No.

Finally, someone who was almost on track! Ivy was visibly relieved to hear West's answer about a detecting charm. "Very close, Mr. Odessa. Good guess."

Ivy cleared her throat and moved away from her desk. "I hope you all heard what Mr. Odessa said, because his answer was the closest. We will not be learning about locking or unlocking charms today, but rather..." Ivy waved her wand at the chalkboard. The previous message erased itself and in its place was a new title:

intruder charms, SWEET, she could use that.. like on her door at her house here and in Alabama, stupid Daniel wont go in their anymore. .BEAM.

she raised her hand "An intruder alarm is a charm set on a door that will go off id anyone unwelcome or wanted would to enter to inform the owner of what's behind, said door."

that sounded better in her head... she stopped talking and didn't give the explanation for the Caterwauling charm

Intruding charms? THEY WERE LEARNING ABOUT INTRUDER CHARMS? That sounded pretty cool. They should have had those working when the stupid goblins showed up. Then the whole school would have seen them and would have been all STOP IN THE NAME OF LAW…

Raising her hand as she stood there in front of hers and Yarby’s door she just beamed. “Professor, do the intruder charms only warn us that there are intruders or are there different kinds – like a charm to make the door knob singe a hand if its someone who isn’t supposed to be there?” She asked, her face calm and kind and almost pleasant. Almost as if she would have been happy to burn the palm of an intruders hand.

Blink-blink.

Innocent face.

So they were going to learn about the intruder charm? Hmm...this lesson should be interesting! He liked the idea of it and he could use it if Belle went into his room unintentionally. He smirked at the idea. Then he heard the professor's question.

Kace knew this one because his grandma and mother talked about it if anyone broke into their house. He raised his hand, "Professor the intruder charm detect a thief or the intruder in a small place such as a house for example and the Caterwauling charm, can detect a lot of people at once and the alarm is more effective."

He hoped get the info right, if he mixed it up it didn't matter to him. *shrugs*

He gave a nod in greeting to the professor, remembering last class and how they were not supposed to speak.. that would carry over to all of her lessons, yeah? Then he turned his eyes to the instructions on the board. Find a partner and pick a door? Well.. there certainly were a lot to pick from, weren't there?

Ethan turned his eyes upon the row of doors, then headed over towards Mo as he spoke. "Best door, eh?" He looked at it appraisingly before nodding in agreement. "I'll take your word for it.."
Mo was joined by Ethan, who was Male Student Leader Number 1 in his book, and the older boy got a big grin. This was definitely the best door in the room, and now he had the best partner. Things were looking up.

And the lesson had started. Turning his attention to the professor, Mo listened as she informed them they were learning the Intruder Charm. The difference between the Intruder Charm and the Caterwauling Charm? Damage to the ear drums, actually. He raised his hand. "The Intruder Charm tells you that someone is there. The Caterwauling Charm tells everyone."

Standing near his door with Miks, all Kaiden could do was stand there and listen to suggestions... What could they do to a door? Light it on fire? Though that would be cool and they could definitely do that, other things would be suitable for it. So he just stood there as other people said their ideas, because you know, they knew things.

But an intruder charm? that sounded interesting, even if he didn't know what it did exactly. Raising his hand, he hazard a guess. "Er, I would imagine that a Intruder Charm tells you that some has entered somewhere. BUT maybe it has a way to mark who did the intruding? Similar to dye packs used to criminals who take money? Like something to get them caught red handed?"

Dylan was giving Daichi the most hateful look he could muster. What in the bleeding slugs was WRONG with that toddler? Merlin...if they weren't in class...the Captain would've cursed him where he stood.

Idiot.

It was also a good thing he wasn't on the quidditch team. That misstep would've been severely punished...Like he and the other Slytherins didn't already work so hard...

---

...Focusing back on the lesson...and not his anger with his fellow leader...Dylan gave Beezus a look before answering. It wasn't anything bad or whatever...He just liked looking at her...

"Professor...the intruder charm detects people who aren't suppose to be in a specific area...and sounds an alarm...but the alarm probably wouldn't be THAT loud. More appropriate for a home or whatever...The other is more long-range...and leagues louder. The effects are the same, though..." Dylan pondered for a moment...trying to decided if there was anything he wanted to add....but there wasn't.

He shot another look at his girlfriend.

West beamed and kept his next answer simple. He put his hand up, completely interested now.

"Intruder charms are a bit more discreet too, given they don't make noises for real big areas, and also you can focus them more directly on a particular room, or access point like a door or a window, while the caterwauling charm is kinda more general."

When the two students brought up Hogsmeade, Ivy nodded, very pleased with their answers. "You are both correct. In the second Wizarding War the Caterwauling charm was once used on the entire Hogsmeade village to detect people - particularly Harry Potter - who entered the village after a certain time. Thus we can infer that the Caterwauling charm can be set to work in a specific time frame." Just a little history lesson to add there.

Ivy nodded to the Slytherin when he raised his hand. "Good question. No, the Intruder Charm does not prevent people from entering. It only produces an alarm to warn anyone in the house. However... The Security Spell can prevent people from entering. We will get to that later." That was the second part of the lesson.

"Yes, thank you, Mr. Odessa." Smart kids, they were.

Okay, now that they had all spoken... "You all gave excellent answers. To summarize, we can conclude that the Intruder Charm is most used in households or smaller places and are, as Mr. Odessa said, more discreet. Caterwauling Charms are mostly used in larger areas, such as Hogsmeade in past times, and are much louder and disruptive than the Intruder Charm. Like Mr. Branxton said, the Caterwauling Charm will tell everyone when someone has entered the area."

Once that was clarified, Ivy turned back to the board and wrote the incantation for the Intruder Charm on the board:

Intrudus Concutio
in-TROO-duss con-COO-shee-oh

"To successfully cast an Intruder Charm, you must say the incantation while tracing the area you wish to be covered by this charm. In this case, you will be pointing and tracing your wand around the door frame in front of you. You could do the same with a window or any other way of entrance. Not only does the Intruder Charm detect when someone enters by door or window, it can also detect if they enter a room by other means, such as apparition, portkeys, floo, etcetera. If you wanted to cover a whole room or house with this spell, to detect when someone enters by other magical means, you would verbally repeat the incantation whilst tracing your wand around the perimeter of the room, or the house." Pretty handy, she thought.

"Today you will be learning how to cast the Intruder Charm on one of the doors in this room. No, they don't lead anywhere. They are simply, empty doors. If you don't have a partner, find one now. You and your partner will practice together the incantation and then one of you will cast the Intruder Charm on the door. Once you feel it is sufficient, your partner will walk through the door, and if the alarm goes off, you will have succeeded. You will then remove the charm with Finite Incantatem and your partner will repeat those steps and you will walk through their charmed door. Understood?" Ivy looked around at her students to make sure they understood her directions, or if they had questions.

"Get to work then!"

OOC: I want at least THREE posts per STUDENT for this activity. Feel free to use more, but you won't get extra points. (;

You have at least 22 hours to do this. If Peeves keeps this up, I'll give you a little extra time. I'm not going to do a demonstration, just because Peeves is taking up a lot of time and I want to leave as much time for you guys as possible! It's fairly self explanatory though, so good luck! If you have any questions, PM me or ask Professor Knox. =)

So, basically everyone in the class was correct in some way or the other with their answers. Jory wrote down the incantation and wand movement wile still listening to Professor Knox as she gave the details about the activity. He could hardly wait to get started!

"Ready, Alec?'' the boy asked his fellow Puff. They should obviously start with the practicing first. "Intrudus Concutio... Intrudus Concutio...Intrudus Concutio...Intrudus Concutio...In-TROO-duss con-COO-shee-oh...In-TROO-duss con-COO-shee-oh
...''
That seemed to be in order.

The other part, the wand movement was simple enough. Just point and trace.

Arts TRANSPONSTER!

So the Caterwauling Charm did work the way Sophie thought it did. Brilliant! The Hufflepuff smiled and looked to her side again just to see Blue mouthing something to her and actually gesturing. She chuckled and nodded her head, even though they were close enough to be able to hear each other speak. But the Ravenclaw was right; Sophie was pretty sure professor Knox wouldn't be very pleased if they started talking in the middle of the class.

Oh! They were already going to start practising!! Lovely!! Sophie beamed and turned to Blue again. "Come on!" She exclaimed, getting up and going to one of the doors. She reeeally wanted to be polite and at least ask Blue if it was okay for her to go first, but.... butbutbut she really wanted to try the Charm naoooo!!! "Do you mind if I go first?" The badger grinned at her younger friend. Let her, let her, let her, yeeees???

...

LOVELY! Heheheheee!

Sophie pulled out her wand and mouthed the incantation a few times. She looked at the board to make sure she was saying the right thing. Yep, sounded about right. "Intrudus Concutio." And after she said it out loud she sort of waved her wand around the door.

Just practising, just practising! Hehe! "Ready?" She asked Blue, looking from the door to the eagle. Sophie herself was more than ready to start! Teehee! Bounce bounce bounce.

Now that he had gotten that out of the way, Jory was all set to cast the Charm around the door's frame. "Here goes,'' he told Alec. "Hope it get this right!'' He was feeling rather excited, as he always did when trying out a new spell. "You haven't got ice cream with you, have you, Alec?'' he asked rather suddenly and randomly. Where did that question come from? The were doing absolutely nothing related to ice cream!

Pushing ice cream from his mind, the seventh year readied his wand. "Intrudus Concutio!'' And point and trace, point and trace. All around the door frame. There! "Go on,'' Jory told Alec. "Let's see if I did this right.'' He sure hope he did!

Sarah knew the difference all right, inturder charm was for small areas like the treat pantry, or that was where her father had it (that was after years of the treats disappearing mysteriously) while her father usually placed the other charm on the whole farm occasionally. That was what Sarah knew before textbooks, and textbooks only added to her knowledge

"Ready" Sarah asked her partner with a smile. "May I quickly jot down some notes before we begin?" Sarah did just that and scrawled them in her notebook. She had then her head and in her textbooks yet it was always good to have a charms notebook with charm in on you just in case.

"in-TROO-duss con-COOshee-a" Sarah tried. Wrong. "in-TROO-dusscon-COO-shee-oh” oh dear, she forgot that they were separate words. She needed a longer space between them "in-TROO-duss con-COO-shee-oh. There she had it. Now faster- “Intrudus Concutio” Perfect. Twice more, “Intrudus Concutio, Intrudus Concutio”. All done. She looked towards her partner, waiting for them to move on with the practice.

Then she began to look around the room to see if anyone else was partnerless and then she saw the headboy standing all alone. Walking over to the door slowly and sneakily trying not to disturb the class she tapped the Head Boy's arm. "Need a partner?" she whispered. But all she was thinking was please say yes, she needed a partner.
He was still rolling on his feet giving both Ariana and Alice looks while they paired up. He attempted a wave back to Ariana, but was suprised when he felt a small tap on his arm. He looked down at a small first year girl from his same house. Alexia, she had been to a few Quidditch practices with him. "I do in fact." How difficult will pairing up with a first year be? It shouldn't be too bad. He looked back at Ariana, then gave Alexia a quick nod telling her she can stay.

Sighhhhh. "No. No, no, no, and if anyone talks about ice cream again, they'll get three times as much homework. Understood?" Ivy glared at Alexa and Daichi and then everybody else. Did they not understand the meaning of quiet?
Then Suddenly Oakey started to like this Professor. Ice Cream is BAD.

No, Oakey couldn't explain the differnece between the two at the moment. He was too busy admiring Professor Knox's hate for Ice Cream. She did hate it, he hoped. She sounded like she hated it.

This was going to be really simple, the charm seemed easy. "Okay Alexia, I'll go first and you can step through the door." Taking Out his wand from it's holster Oakey eyed the door before him.
"Let's both practice the incantation first, then you can step through the door." Alexia was only a first year after all. He wasn't doubting her skills if he ended up being a charms prodigy, he just wasn't going to risk it.
"in-TROO-duss con-COO-shee-oh...in-TROO-duss con-COO-shee-oh, in-TROO-duss con-COO-shee-oh...in-TROO-duss con-COO-shee-oh"
He felt pretty confident in the pronunciation. How was Alexia doing?

Nodding to Professor Knox...or in her general direction, Dylan turned to Beezus. They were to practice up a bit first...and familiarize themselves. Totally understandable...

Intrudus Concutio...in-TROO-duss con-COO-shee-oh...The Slytherin started forming the letter sounds with his mouth, trying to get his lips used to the way they made them move. Merlin, that second word...

"Intrudus....ConCOOSHEEio...."

Also, Dylan appreciated the way she broke the spells down, giving a specific enunciation guide. Why didn't everyone do this?

Withdrawing his wand, he decided he was ready to give it a go. Might as well...He was as ready as he'd ever be. He nodded in his Ravenclaw's direction.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

And now came the practical part of the class. Lex waited until the Professor was done talking to unlink arms with Lottie's. Her attention turned briefly to the door. Really it would have been cooler learning how to break in to one because that'd be tons more useful than this.

"I think I can go first, you can practice while I'm practicing--but then...maybe you should go first in case I make the door explode?"

Granted her wand hadn't been up to any funny business more recently but she figured at least one of them should have been able to use the door and Lottie's spell was more likely to work. "Or I guess we can just practice until one of use is ready to go." Just in case she got bored of practising while her friend was still trying to get it down to the last detail.

Short attention span you see.

"Intrudus Concutio! In-tru-dus Con-cu-tio! Intru-dus Con-cooo-tio!" Something like that.

Hmm. Okay....her ideas were a bit far-fetched than what they were really learning today. The doors didn't lead to anywhere....they were merely empty. Good thing she didn't voice those thoughts out. Heh.

Professor Knox kept speaking in front and albeit it was difficult to pay attention to anyone else with Dylan beside her, the brunette still listened intently to what the woman was telling and fervently noted all her instructions and whatnot. First off was to practice the Intruder Charm. It's incantation was Intrudus Concutio.....the second part pretty much sounded like Crucio. "Intrudus Concutio....Intrudus Concutio..." She was saying this correctly, yes? Throwing a glance at her boyfriend and listening to how he said it told her that she was on the right track. Or...if it was wrong, she and Dylan were saying it wrong together. At least she wasn't the only one. Anyway, if it was wrong....they'd find out later when they cast the charm on the door.

"Intrudus Concutio....Intrudus Concutio....in-TROO-duss con-COO-shee-oh..." That was better? She thought it was.

"I'm ready..." She said, in respond to the Slytherin's nod. "Who will go first?"

Ohhh, drats. Still no partner.

It's okay, he didn't really need one. He could easily cast the charm, then walk through the door himself to test it. No biggie. Though he did feel like he'd need a hand with the incantation, as it was a bit of a handful. All the spells were big words this term. It had not got unnoticed by Theo. He pulled out his wand and rested against his side. He would practice the words first.

Intrudus Concutio.

Well, the first part was easy.

"Intrudus." It was like intruder, but with an 'us' on the end. Concutio... hmm... "Con-coo-she-o." Thank goodness the correct pronunciation was on the board, because otherwise, he would completely of misread that charm.

"Con-coo-she-ohhhhhh."

Hmm.
