Just behind Mr. Firth’s home is a fenced area for his pride and joy, Broc and Bonny, newly expanded to also include the little girl, Truebee. They are all highland cattle, animals found mostly in the wild Highlands of Scotland. Broc, the male, is three years old; Bonny, the female, is five. Mr. Firth has had then both for just over a year now. The little girl was welcomed into the world on April 14, 2081.
Highland cattle are a naturally hearty breed, thriving on cold temperatures and foraging. While Mr. Firth does have a small enclosure for them on the near side of the pen, you will rarely see them in it. And don’t let the lack of a feeding trough upset you—these creatures are renowned for not being picky about what they eat. There is plenty of vegetation during almost any season to keep these guys happy.
Near Mr. Firth’s hut is a gate that you may use if you wish to visit with Broc and Bonny. In a wooden box next to the gate, you will find an assortment of plants and leaves you may feed to the creatures. Broc, and now Truebee, are partial to the bloom of the Scottish Primrose and Bonny the Shetland Mouse-ear, so if you see them growing on the grounds, they wouldn’t say no to a treat!
The old sign asking for no visitors within the pen is now gone. Instead, a new sign, still in Mr. Firth's handwriting, has taken its place. The message reads: "Broc, Bonny, and the newborn Truebee are now happily accepting visitors! Please let Bonny sniff and get used to you before approaching Truebee."
Please remember to treat these animals with kindness and respect. They are generally docile, but if provoked, their horns become a highly dangerous weapon. Anyone caught mistreating them, especially Truebee, or misbehaving in the pen will be severely punished.
The fourth year had been aching to do this for quite some time. She wanted to ride Broc and Bonny last term - but as she reached the pen she just frowned. Pregnant? No visiting? That was a load of horse manure.
She wanted to give them, love, not indigestion. But for now, she was going to abide by the lame rules. Reaching her hand into the box next to the gate she picked out a few Scottish Primrose leaves and held them gingerly out in front of her over the fence.
"Hey" she smiled to the cattle was she wiggled the plant above the fence line. She just wanted to give them love - and maybe become their friends so that one day they would let her sit atop them and jump the fence. Yeah? That sounded like a plan.
Become friends with the cattle, fool cattle into letting her ride them...or just letting her into the fence with them...and possibly paint the fence a calming color. Like Robin's egg blue?

The smell of two-legs-round-ears wafted on the breeze. But... SNIFF. It was not the same two-legs-round-ears as usual. In fact.. SNIFF SNIFF. Yes, it was female this time.
Broc slowly meandered toward the fence, curiosity aroused. He-who-brings-food had been very careful lately about who was allowed near the pen. This was clearly a good idea, because Broc did not feel like having to chase off anyone from hurting Bonny or the young inside her.
He smelled a delicious treat and realized the female was attempting to feed him. He was not particularly hungry, but he was not getting his usual variety of food anymore, so he ate it, slobbing wetness all over the hand of the two-legs-round-ears in the process. The female began to make strange noises, but Broc ignored them. She was moving the treat, making it harder for him to eat it. This annoyed him.

GRUNT.
Mika was watching Broc as he was in the field. She didn’t realize that he could smell that she was there – at first she had did blink in shock when she noticed Broc turn towards her and walk over to her. When he walked over she just smiled, and then laughed when she felt him drooling on her.
Oh god.
He was drooling over her hand. Quickly and expertly she changed the plants into her other hand and held her fingers out flat as her mother had taught her those years before. ”Hey Broc,” she smiled over to the rather large cattle. She tried to stay still as he attempted to eat the treat she had gathered for him – but that was hard his whiskers tickled her.
[b]”You have a beautiful…friend?” She didn’t know how to explain what Bonny was to Broc. But she thought that these two were both beautiful cattle. It was a part of her family life she had always loved animals, cattle included.

SNORT.
Good. The female was holding still again.
Broc resumed his eating. When he came to the end of the plant, he nudged the hand of the two-legs-round-ears for more. Seeing none, he let out a long MOOOOOOOOO to voice his displeasure.
Hearing the loud call of Broc, Bonny poked her head out of the enclosure and looked towards the sound. Was the two-legs-round-ears back to check on them again? No, it was a smaller female. SNIFF. Bonny cautiously took some steps toward the delicious smell, waiting to see if Broc would step away.

When Broc started mooing at her the first thing she did was slowly pull her hand back and dash back to the basket. She came back of course, carrying another handful of plants – this time she hadn’t been as careful grabbing just Broc’s favorite greenery. “Here you go” she smiled at the mooncalf.
Of course, Mika saw Bonny sticking her head out of the enclosure and just smiled over to her. She had read the note of course and knew she was going to have a baby mooncalf soon – and those were supposed to be adorable. Right? That’s at least what she had read in all of those books. “Hey Broc, your lovely friend? Girlfriend? Is looking for you I think” she quietly spoke in a hushed tone to the mooncalf.
Yep. This girl, she just loved animals. Sure at first she might have wanted to sneak in and paint the fence a color – but really, she’d never do that. She’d never endanger these guys not after he was eating out of her hand and being so so, pettable.
Reaching her hand up she held out some more of the plant and slowly extended the other one so he could smell her. It was her idea – she really believed that once an animal smelled you it could tell if you were a good or bad person. And she was obviously a good one.

Good. The female had sensed his displeasure. So the two-legs-round-ears were trainable after all. CHEW CHEW CHEW. The male continued to eat up until he'd had his fill.
Then he noticed his mate come out from hiding. SNIFF SNIFF. The two-legs-round-ears smelled okay, but he wasn't chancing it. With a final grab at the greenery, Broc turned and slowly lumbered back toward the enclosure. When he finally arrived, he opened his mouth and let the contents fall in front of Bonny. There. Now his mate could enjoy without being in danger.

Mika just tipped her head to the side when she watched Broc eat loads of the greens. And then he sniffed the air knowingly - he must have smelled Bonny. Really, she wondered what they smelled like to each other because cattle dung to her wasn't the most appealing smell in the world. Still she stood there and noticed there were still greens in her hand well, for a moment.
She was about to say something when he just walked off - food in his mouth. And he just dropped them in front of Bonny. That was so sweet, she thought and stood there watching them for a moment.
She walked over to the basket, and glanced at how many of the plants were left. And now, she knew what she was going to do. She was going to go and collect plants for them. Here, and there and maybe even snag a section of the student garden to grow cattle-food.

March. Two three four! March, two three four! Aaaand STOP!
Lex stopped at the gate to the Pen with a wide grin spread across her face and her puzzled Kneazle by her feet. She took a loooong sniff at the air then sighed contentedly like they did in those muggle movies she watched. Muggle Farmer life. This was it. She brought her own boots this time and had the shovel which was gotten from the shed along with the wheel burrow and a pair of gloves. She was SO ready for this. Wow, a second chance at being a muggle farmer. She couldn't wait to tell her Daddy!! He'd probably send her some candy for her good work!!!!
She shoved the gate open and headed in.
Yup. Smells only a muggle farmer would smell. Ahhh. Time to get to work. She closed the gate behind her, took a look around to make sure Bonny was no where close then got to shoveling. She'd need enough to get the gardens nicely manured. Yup yup yup!
Shovel. Shovel. Shovel. While shoveling the dung into the burrow she noted that Felix wasn't taking his eyes off the animals. Good. He could tell her if the thing suddenly decided to charge. Clearly she'd never be able to shove the burrow and him out fast enough but she wasn't opposed to stunning her either. She'd remove it once she was safely out.
No need for that though. Both Broc and Bonny stayed on the other side, perfectly content with eating the grass if she had to guess, so more muggle farmer duties for her. Back to shoveling.
Lex kept going until there was a nice pile. "Okay buddy, let's go. We have a lot of ground to cover." Kneazle in step with her, she exited the pen, closing the gate CAREFULLY behind her.

Hauling a bucket in his right hand and a brush in his left, Alistaire head for his pets' pen. The groundskeeper was whistling, but one of the first warm, sunny days of the year put him in a good mood and he burst out into song. "There once was a troop o' Irish dragoons came marchin' down through Fyvie-o. An' the captain's fa'en in love wi' a very bonnie lass an' her name it was called pretty Peggy-o."
When he reached the pen, he undid the latch and entered. Taking out his wand, he performed the Aguamenti charm and, as the bucket filled, he moved on to the second verse of the song. "There's many a bonnie lass in th' Howe o Auchterless, there's many a bonnie lass in th' Garioch. There's many a bonnie Jean in the streets o' Aberdeen, but the flower o' them all lies in Fyvie-o."
With the bucket filled, he made a whistling noise. "Broc, Bonny, 'Bee. Fresh water fer yeh." He looked around. Where's the little girl? She was probably in the enclosure taking a nap.

Yeah it wasn't winter anymore, and you don't really fires for April nights, but it was better to keep that stocked right? The wood that Firth gave him at the start of the term was running low. So Oakey went down to pay Mr.Firth a visit. He almost passed by the Pen when he heard song. He had never heard it before, and the accent singing it was unmistakable. He moved over to the fence and gave the Groundskeeper a wave. "Hello, Mr. Firth." Oakey called out to grab his attention. Were some of the things Mr.Firth even singing words?

"Tha's a good girl," he said as Bonny made her way over towards her human. "Drink up," he said, patting her gently on the side. "An' where's--?"
He never finished his question due to someone greeting him. Who was it? Turning towards the newcomer, Firth was pleased to see the Head Boy. "Oakey! Good ter see yeh! Yeh come ter visit Truebee or are yeh jus' on a walk?"

Oakey took the Groundskeepers greeting as his invitation to come into the Pen. So he moved around to the entrance and came in. Carefully closing the gate behind him. "I was just on a walk. Stopped by to see if you had anymore logs to restock our Common Room." Truebee was the calf right! Uhhh sounded familiar some how. "Could I see the calf?" Oakey asked. He didn't really have anywhere else to be right now.

Firth gently rubbed the top of Bonny's head and Oakey made his way into the pen. Hopefully that would help keep her nice and relaxed. After all, Alistaire wouldn't let anyone hurt her under his watch, and she knew that. "Trust yeh Hufflepuffs ter be out on walks in th' Grounds. Yeh all as a whole seem ter appreciate the outdoors more." Perhaps because their Common Room was underground? "Bu' about yer logs..." He thought for a moment. "Yes, I do. There's still a bit in th' stock pile back behind my hut, I believe," he said, gesturing towards his home. "Well I think Bonny says go ahead, don' you?" he chuckled. "She's in the enclosure there. But if were you, I'd pat th' momma firs' just so she's more comfortable with yeh." Angry momma cow was a BAD idea.

Ella had been wanting to see the baby calf since the birth but she'd been pretty busy with everything going on at the school. After spending a good amount of time flipping through her Arithmancy text, she decided she needed a break and what better time to go for a visit, yeah? Yeah.
The sixteen year old wandered down to the gated area and spotted Mr. Firth talking with Oakey Worm. She smiled faintly and approached, hoping she wasn't interrupting.

"I'm usually on walk like this Everyday. Good exercise, I'd brave the cold too for walks in the winter. Only got one cold." Yup Immune to sickness Oakey was Immune Oakey....kind of. looked in the direction that Firth pointed. He noted the logs and also where the Baby Cow was. "Well I figured it's better than no logs which we started with. Let the unused ones go into next term."
Oh Whoa that was a loud Moo. How would Firth know what that Moo meant? Did he speak Cow too? You know what dumb thought, of course he did.
"Glad she approves. You want me to feed her anything too? Like ummm." What did Cows normally eat? Grass, that's kind of lame Bonny had plenty of that under her hooves. "...Hay." Oakey decided not to bother waiting for the answer and moved over to Bonny, and started to pat her on her snout gently.

Firth nodded. Yes, daily exercise was a great idea, even if it was just a stroll around the grounds in the fresh air. Immune to sickness maybe, but surely not to accidents and injuries. Because from what he'd heard, the Head Boy was quite adept at having problems with both. "Tha's true. Th' wood won' really go bad a' all." Nothing to worry about.
"Eh, she's bin grazing fer awhile now, probably not even hungry anymore. Plus she's sorta suspicious o' food she didn' pick out herself. Weird for cattle." VERY weird. "So she'd trust yeh more if yeh DIDN' feed her, I think."

Ella returned Oakey's smile and wave, relieved they were doing better now. She hated fighting with him, not that she'd ever admit it or anything. But still... it didn't feel right being angry with him. He was practically family and she wanted him around.
"Hi, Mr. Firth!" The blonde greeted cheerfully as she stopped next to the groundskeeper, eyes wandering from him to the cow and calf. She nodded at what she was being told and looked up again, a small smile on her face. "I've only got gummy worms on me, Sir, and I doubt it'd be good to feed her those." Grin for Oakey Worm for reasons. Heh.
"How's she doing? Truebee, I mean. ...Actually, are they both doing okay?" She asked as she approached the Mama!cow, giving the creature a kind smile.

He was happy to see her. So far she was the only student who had come specifically to visit the newborn calf. He understood. It was getting close to exam time and there was much to do for the students.
He grunted. "Eh, candy wouldn' be the best fer cattle, yeh're right." Hopefully Alexa Cambridge knew that. "So thank yeh." As for Truebee... "She's doin' jus' fine. Right as rain, I reckon. Growin' fast, too." He beamed with evident pride. "The whole family seems ter be adjustin' quite well."
Once Firth saw that Bonny was fine with Ella, he said, "'Bee is in th' enclosure over there." He indicated it with a backwards point with his head. "Yeh're welcome ter go pat her."

"Gummy Worms aren't good for anybody." yeah he said it fully aware of the look he was going to get from Ella. "Your cattle probably get their fair share of real worms if they graze in the grass all the time, don't they." made sense."Oh we can go see...ummm True-bee...then." seriously that name? The question was also more directed to Bonny, but Firth could answer on her behalf.

Ella smiled a little at Oakey as she continued to pet Bonny, wanting her to feel comfortable so that the badgers could eventually move over and pet the calf. Mom approval was a must, she figured, and she didn't want to be chased by an angry Momma!cow. "I'm really happy that they're both doing well." It'd be sad if either had been sick. She wouldn't have liked that at all.
The blonde ROLLED her eyes at Oakey before turning her attention back to the groundskeeper, a small smile on her face. "Not a problem, Sir. I'm sure you've got the proper food for these guys here anyway." And real worms! Was Oakey right about that? Ella looked from her housemate to Firth and back, a curious expression on her face. "Do they really eat worms too?" That was sort of gross.
They could pet the baby now? N'awww! "Sounds great! Thanks, Mr. Firth!" The blonde smiled at Oakey, bouncing a bit as she did. Was he excited too? But before she went to see the baby... "And thank you, Bonny." Y'know, for letting them pet her and her kid.
The sixteen year old then made her way over to the enclosure.

"Tell that ter half of Hufflepuff!" he said with a smile. Gummy worms seemed to be a favorite among the Badgers.
"Yup, I have 'em on a good diet." Plus they were natural foragers, so they pretty much ate everything ever. "I'd imagine so. I've never actually seen tha' happen, Oakey, bu' it seems possible." Logical, but sort of gross. Well, from his perspective it was, at least.
He nodded. "Yes, go see 'Bee! She'll be happy ter see yeh." She liked visitors, especially if they pet her. "Yeh're welcome, Ella." He liked these two.

Lowly whilsting, Wade made his merry way towards the Pen after getting the okay from Mr. Firth. It was nice out today, you know, and now seemed to be a good time to give the cattle some attention since now the homework, studying, and lessons were dying down.. Hmm..Wade then leaned against the fence to look at them when he finally arrived.
"Aww.." Wade rested his elbows on the surface so his chin rested in his palms. Watching them interact with Truebee. It was just so cute to him. Yep, he wanted to pet them, and feed them if they were hungry, though he figured walking in on their moment would get them into offensive mode.
So, Wade approached the gate where the box of yummy's for them sat. He took a good handful of the plants and leaves into his fist, before giving a distinct whilsting noise as he once again leaned against the fence holding his flat palm with the food out. "Yoohooo, freeesh nummies!" When you're ready, come and get it cattle family.

Furmgoat flew through the tops of the trees, wonky wings flapping silently. He was searching for the small person to receive his letter, and after a short flight through the forest, he'd FOUND him. Furmy hooted softly as he made his decent, flying wide circles around the boy, in search of a perch.
The small owl settled for a wooden stump by the student, settling on it with one leg out, letter attached. He then proceeded to staaaaaaare down the boy.
"Hoo."
SPOILER!!: Letter

My son,
I'm not exactly pleased to hear of certain rumours and going ons in the school, so I'm trusting you to respond asap on whether they are true or not. Aside from that, I can't tell you enough how proud I am to hear on your recent accomplishments and your own decision to stay where you cause the least amount of trouble.. and of course, that special girl you have met. I'm looking forward to meeting Indianna when you return, especially before you two try sneaking off to Paris.. Yes, Luc told me. While I can't force you not to go, I do expect to meet with her family so we can discuss your plans even further.
Speaking of special, there is someone I would like you to meet. Her name is Victoria, and I'm sure you two will get along just fine when we pick you up at the end of your term. Alright? Do keep in touch, just because you're of age doesn't excuse you from writing back to your old man.
Love you lots,
Dad
Not waiting for the treats, neither for the boy, Furmy rose up and flew away again. After all, he had so much more work to do!
Mom says I have no sense of direction, so I packed my bags and right.

"Thank you, Bonny" Oakey said with a smile to the cow, and he walked along side his Captain to the Calf. Now it was Oakey's turn to role his eyes at Ella, as the two of them walked from Bonny to Truebee. "What, no. It's probably not intentional. It'd be like if you sneaked a gummy worm into my Veggie Drinks." Oakey nodded along with what Mr.Firth said as well. "Yeah that, and I just don't see the appeal in Gummy snacks."
That stuff, seriously if Romanos hadn't made them do all those work outs this term they'd have gained 20lbs from all the junk intake.
