The sun is just beginning to set on the horizon as you enter the Astronomy classroom. Many photographers, and even the romantic at heart astronomers, call this time of day the Golden Hour and consider it to be the most picturesque of sights. Which is probably why you are finding your Astronomy professor leaning against one of the stone windowpanes humming a certain song from a classic 1964 musical. The classroom is once again in its usual semicircle formation in front of the blackboard and nothing seems to be out of the ordinary - save the professor's shoes. Instead of his usual dress shoes he is wearing a pair of black sneakers. Something that would probably be considered a bit of a fashion faux pas to most. Including Professor Flamsteed. Most days that is.
So come on in and take a seat. The lesson will begin shortly.
⌦Lesson Progression

"AH-HA!" Tobias exclaimed triumphantly, peering through his sextant straight at Professor Starman.
"Polaris, Mr. Tempus," Airey said while pointing to the open window near the boy. "It is out there. Although I appreciate the compliment." He make careful observations using his instrument and then he recorded them down in his notebook

Latitude = 90 Degrees – Sextant Angle
So he needed to do: 90-51=39
Alright so he was done. He was gonna wait for the next set of directions from the Professor.
Airey nodding approvingly at the first year. "Good, keep up the good work Mr. Lecium," he said as he continued to make his way around the classroom.

Airey furrowed his brow. This WAS unlike Mr. Odessa, although he did appreciate the honesty. Although he was pretty sure that his classmates WERE rather curious as to why he was late. "While I appreciate your apology and honesty, Mr. Odessa, I am afraid that with be 5 points from your house as well for your tardiness." Rules were rules despite sincerity.
And the professor saw those looks towards a CERTAIN Gryffindor. Airey was beginning to get the feeling that he observed way too many things about his students and probably knew more about their social lives than he cared to. Maybe it wasn't anything? Perhaps the Slytherin had just heard her talk about using the sextant as a weapon and was judging her inside his head. Yes. That had to be it.
"But yes, please do stop by my office tomorrow." Not after class because that would be much later than students should be out of their common rooms.

There didn't seem like there was anyone annoying enough in the room to hit over the head with astronomical devices, though, so she brought back the sextant without using it for violent purposes.
Sad. At least Polaris was easy to find. She quickly searched for the big dipper in the sky like usual and located the pointer stars on the constellation before following them to where the North Star was. That was all there was, right? Weapon fiddling next?
"I meant that as general information, Miss Fischer," he chuckled while shaking his head. Just to be safe though, he would keep an eye on the quidditch captain during the lesson. Or maybe he should encourage her to give Mr. Odessa a whack on the head to help him focus? He seemed to be zoning out staring at her.
It seemed like most students had done enough practicing for now and checking his sundial watch once more indicated to him that it was time to give the next set of instructions.
"ALRIGHT LISTEN UP!" he said while clapping his hands together three times loudly. "Practice time is now over and it is time to put your comfortable shoes to the test. For the remaining 40 minutes of this lesson you are to run around the castle and the grounds taking measurements at 3 different locations and record your measurements on your parchment like you have been in this classroom. You may stay inside the castle if you wish as long as you have a window to use and look out of to see Polaris. Be smart on the grounds and do not go places you should not be." Like the Forbidden Forest. Although he himself had felt the urge to go see it recently. It just seemed so sad and lonely. Poor forest. "On top of taking these three measurements, I want you to use the Eye Focusing Charm from last lesson to try and see the Polaris System, meaning Polaris A, Polaris B, and Polaris Ab."
He paused for a moment to let all of these instructions sink in.
"I will be running around as well in case you need assistance," he said while pointing to his snazzy shoes. "You may work individually or with a friend, but I must insist that fourth years and younger are accompanied by an older student when wandering the grounds." His eyes glanced over the prefects and captains in the room especially. Yes, responsibility laid heaviest on them. Clear? "When you have completed your three measurements and viewing the Polaris System, please return to the classroom and turn in your parchment to me."

The snake watched closely how the professor explained the way to use sextant. He eyes followed the professor's hand as he handled the clamp. She also took sometime watching some students. You know just to be sure of the whole process. Then she went and grabbed a sextant for her OWN self. It probably was the first time the fourth-year had gotten hold of such a tool. Cool, huh!? Well, she was excited. Like it was one thing stargazing with only your naked eyes and a total other thing to be using a tool. Too bad the goblins stole the telescopes. They would have had fun using them. Pity.
she inspected the sextant closely and took her time. Mind you she was a bit fascinated. But then she thought that it was time to start practicing, her classmates had already started. The Slytherin, turned her face upwards. She first needed to find Polaris, piece of cake. They have practiced enough times to do so. After like a minute, Cassia was able to locate big dipper which was more than half the job. She located Polaris easily afterwards.
Now that Polaris was found. It was time to measure the latitude. USING this cool tool. FUN!

With her skinny fingers the red head grabbed her sextant and put it by her eye so she could see through it perfectly. She then looked out towards the horizon. Step one done. Now she needed to find Polaris again, which she did by pressing the clamp till Polaris was at her horizon. This was right then? yeah? She hoped so, because she released the clamp there. She swayed it a little and watched as the Polaris star remained in the correct place.
Weiiird telescope thingy. But angles, she needed that. So she took the sextant away from her eyes and read off the degrees. Forty one. Okay. She scribbled that down along with the sum to work latitude out. Then looking at the numbers she figured it out in her head and wrote her answer.

So that was correct? She could listen to what was next then?
Queen of Typos | The OTHER OTHER Roro | WICKED is Good
Now that she had found Polaris, she was to measure the sextant angle which will help her find the latitude. Easily said, no? Hopefully it wasn't that hard to carry out. Holding the sextant firmly, she first pointed it to the horizon as the Professor demonstrated. Then she pressed the clamp releasing the index bar. Her hands were kinda clumsy but she was doing okay. She gripped it more firmly just to make sure it didn't tilt or anything. After that, she kept her eyes on the mirrors until she managed to bring Polaris to the horizon.
With her clumsy and now clammy hands she released the clamp and started working on adjusting Polaris position. Then she swung for good measures and to make sure. That's what they were supposed to do. And at last, she squinted to read the angle. It read 44. Okay. Were they supposed to question or anything. Nope. They weren't.
Cassia retrieved a parchment and started scribbling.

Notes.
Ella was taking them and smiling because it was time to go run around the castle and the blonde was feeling quite energetic at the moment. Bounce. See? And would it be frowned upon if she casually made a stop to get some ice cream while running around? Y'know, if she finished her assignment really quickly or something? Hm? And even if she didn't, maybe it'd be okay cause it'd only give her more energy to look for things like Polaris systems and carry things like sextants. She was gonna think on that.
Gathering up her things, the blonde shoved them hastily in her bag and pulled the bag up over her shoulder. She had the sextant in her hands in case she came across a good spot to view polaris on her travels. "See you in a bit, Professor!" Salute and everything for Astro-man. Then Ella headed out.
'How exciting' Asher thought as he put on his comfy kicks and headed out the door. He wanted to work alone, so he knew he must stay inside the castle. However, there were plenty of places he could explore the nights sky from.
Queen of Typos | The OTHER OTHER Roro | WICKED is Good
After practicing, Cassia watched a couple of her friends and classmates do the same and kept fiddling with the sextant. Pretty cool. Did they have to give it back, now that they have practiced? Her question was answered shortly when Professor Flamsteed started explaining. She listened carefully to what they were going to do. out on the grounds! That excited the snake. She liked the outside. And it surely was going to be exciting since they were taking the sextant with them.
Very interesting.
The fourth-year gathered her stuff and shoved them into her bag. She wasn't sure what she needed other than a parchment but she thought to take the bag just in case. Sextant in hand, the blond headed towards the exit.

Oh? They were done?
Alec looked up from his piece of parchment and over towards Astro Man as he started speaking. They were going to run around the castle? Yeah? AWESOME. It'd be like... going on a rescue mission but going to go and find the latitude of Polaris using the sextant object instead. Yeah.
Okay, it was time to do some running instead. Could he grab someone who was a fourth year or younger and work with them? Or... nah! He'd just... go and find someone who was looking lonely. Maybe. Picking a partner was difficult sometimes, especially for the awkward fifth year. He stuffed his things into his bag, gave the Professor a nod before heading out, sextant in one hand, the strap of his bag in the other.
So... if he went and got himself a bowl of ice cream to eat during this mission, would Flamsteed be mad?

Yaaaaay!!! Guess what Airey? She was legit bouncy again!! Walking around the school at night. Heading down to the kitche for ice-cream Getting measurements at night. This was like one big adventure!!! Maybe there'd even be more goblins to swipe gems from????
Oh boy!!!!
Bounce. Bounce. Bounce.
She took in everything with an eager grin. Wait. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat???? They had to be burdened down with older kids following them? How about no? They would do nothing but slow her down. Obviously she kept nodding, no need to worry the Professor but pfffft, really, how about NO?
She gave him a two fingered salute when they were allowed to leave then scurried out of the classroom.

"Polaris, Mr. Tempus," Airey said while pointing to the open window near the boy. "It is out there. Although I appreciate the compliment." You know, calling him his guiding light and all that by pretending he was Polaris. Flattery will not earn you extra house points, however. Ice cream had potential though.
Tobias was literally JUST ABOUT to point out that Polaris looked an AWFUL LOT like Starman's face and possible muse on the fact that maybe that's why he was so interested in the sky (well Tobias would be if his face was up there) when he heard his name being spoken by the man himself.
Taking the sextant away from his eye, Tobias quickly found out that. Oh... it was Starman's actual real life face. Well... that was quite exciting too!
His eyes flickered in the direction that the professor was pointing before Tobias gave a BIG GRIN and turned so he was looking out there.
"Oh... thanks sir!"
Now.
What was he looking for.
Tobias couldn't actually recall ever learning about Polaris. That was probably on one of his more distracted days, which was fair enough. The kid was just really bad at studying to catch up on what he'd missed out.
Still, he had to do something, and so Tobias simply made a guess that this Polaris star was probably the easiest to find because it was very bright? Or really big, 'cause hadn't someone already said it was a multiple star? Tobias-logic worked in this case, so he looked out of the window and scanned the sky for the brightest star, which he found quite quickly. Then he looked through the sextant and took a second to focus on it again.
Now what? Errr.... something to do with the clamp? He'd been watching the poster for ages but couldn't remember the instructions.
Well... first he needed the horizon, Tobias knew that. He kept looking through the sextant but 'aimed' it lower in a straight line from Polaris, the easier to find it again in a minute. Horizon found, clamp pressed so the bar thingy was freeeee, and Tobias soon found Polaris once again and had it so it was in line with the horizon part of the other half. He released the clamp and decided that he wasn't even going to attempt to adjust it 'cause it was really fiddly anyway. And the swinging... what was that about? Nah he was fine just assuming it was right.
And then the blackboard told him the rest. 90 minus what ever he had, which was like 86. Hm... that didn't seem right.
The Hufflepuff shrugged his shoulders and scribbled down a simple '4' on his notes. He'd probably be really confused about what the 4 meant when he read his notes later on, so Tobias quickly added '(latitude)' just as he Professor Starman gave them their next set of instructions.
OOOOH, they were going outside. If they wanted. NICE. Tobias was READY as well. He was wearing four whole layers and everything.
Figuring he may as well write down the instructions for how to use the sextant just in case he forgot (likely) Tobias did that before gathering the stuff he would need to do this little activity. Then he dashed for the door, realised that people were saluting, and deciding to follow suit. "Aye aye, cap'n!" he added, for good measure.
Well it was a pirate tool.

Marigold took the sextant and held it up to the horizon. She pressed the clamp and adjusted Polaris's position. Then she did it again. Then she double checked. Her angle seemed to be aboooooooouuuuuuut... 47? Was that right?
90-47=43
Latitude=43
She scribbled her figures onto her notes.
Ooh, stargazing outside! Marigold stood up, her cheeks flushed with excitement.
"Thanks, Professor!" she chirruped. Then, following the other students' leads, she saluted and added a heel click.
The little boy saw the Professor was keeping an eye on him. Kace smiled when the Professor noticed his hard work. "Thank Professor." was all he could muster while he was taking notes.
AWWW YEAH FIELD TRIP TIME!!!
Kace was excited when he heard that part. Now he was gonna put that skill to the test. He was excited to show the Professor what he was made of. He was making notes into his notebook and then closed it up. He brought his stuff with him just incase.
Then as he was leaving to explore the grounds, Kace waved to the professor to show he was leaving to do the task. He ran through the exit wondering where he would start first!

Field trip yay. Did this mean she could go get ice cream now?
.. and what did that look mean, Flamsteed?
Was Alice supposed to accompany those fourth years and younger about the grounds? Wouldn't they prefer following around Ella and Dylan to a Gryffindor who would possibly whack them over the head with a sextant? Any smart person would.
She grabbed her astronomical device thing and gathered the rest of her materials before leaving the classroom, fingers crossed that her departure was hasty enough to be ignored by all the younger kids. Bad badged here. No help, nope.

That had been quite an eventful field trip! The night air was lovely, cold, but lovely and she had had Kitty!Tobias with her!!! She made sure not to look at any one thing for two long, just in case Professor Airey was watching them as they entered. She figured if they avoided eye contact he wouldn't ask then she wouldn't have to tell him then there would be no lying. Where was Mr. Vinteren at a time like this???
"That was some great work out there!" She said, beaming over at the Hufflepuff. He hadn't slowed her down at all...actually, he was nice company to have. Thank merlin she didn't run into a whiny one...ugh!
She dropped her parchment on the table then looked around. "I...er...guess we were the first back?" Totally made it seem more convincing. Like they hadn't really left the castle.
She didn't go back to her seat though, instead she walked over to the window to continue star gazing. Even though she'd taken off the spell the moment they were done, the stars were still pretty to look at.
Also.
It would have been cooler if the Professor had had ice-cream waiting for them when they got back. Just saying.

It wasn't until Tobias had cheerfully re-entered the classroom that it suddenly occurred to him that all of his locations that he'd written were outside... and now he seemed to be arriving back as one of the first with Lex. Hmmm... not easiest to explain.
BUT IT WOULD BE FINE SHHHHHHHHH HE WAS HAVING FUN
"Totally!" Tobias grinned back at Lex, really actually properly bouncing on the balls of his feet. That had been awesome and fun AND he'd learnt stuff. Mainly that he'd found a super fun partner and that that made work then obviously seem more fun in turn... but that was still learning. He could even remember some star stuff too so all was well. "That was way cool." Like. Being allowed to go outside and work and be trusted. Uh, ahem. STILL NOT THE POINT.
He too went up to Professor Starman's desk and dropped his parchment on top of Lex's before just kind of... lingering and perching ON the desk he'd been sitting AT earlier, swinging his legs gently.

Oh, so that's why they had to wear comfortable shoes. Because they would be running all around the castle. Gotcha. Sky got up when Professor Airey gave them the go ahead and gathered a sheet of paper, pen and the sextant (would be hard to do this assignment without it, after all). Also, before any of the youngsters got the idea in their heads, no she would not be accompanying any of them into the grounds. She only played babysitter to those of relation to her. In other words, her baby brother or cousin. That was the prefect's job anyway, and since Truebridge hadn't seen fit to make her one.... well you could where she was going with this, right?
Anyway, out the door she went.

Mo was feeling a tiiiiiiiiny bit rushed as his classmates moved quickly around him, but he wanted to do this right. He was careful as he adjusted the sextant, slowly moving the clamp until Polaris had shifted all the way down to meet the horizon. Well, just above the horizon, so he clicked veeeeeeeery gently until the star rested in place.
He checked the sextant, which displayed a 35. Using Flamsteed's math, that meant...
Quote:
Latitude = 90 degrees - sextant angle
Latitude = 90 - 35
Latitude = 55
Currently unplottable Hogwarts was located at 55 degrees Latitude? Or something... like that.
And then Flamsteed was rattling off the instructions for one of those wild and crazy assignments that involved running all over the school. No big deal... it was just late and night and Mo wanted to go lay in his bed. And stay there until morning. Maybe he could do the measurements from the windows in the Ravenclaw common room?
Maybe he was expected to find an escort. Since he was apparently a baby. Flamsteed got a hard look before Mo placed his palms flat on his desk. "Anyone willing to take me around the school? Since I'm only a fourth year and all? And I need my shoes tied, and there will be hand holding involved."
Or wait. No... there was Alice running away like she didn't know it was her responsibility to babysit fourth years. He raced out the door to catch her.

Mika wasn't at all pleased with this part of the assignment - the math. Even though it was relatively simple and not like advanced placed arithmancy with all those numbers and letters and having to look at sheets of paper to remember what the letter A meant...and not to mention all the other letters in her ridiculous name.
Sigh.
This was far easier, it was looking at a sextant, discovering the angle and subtracting another number (hoping you didn't miff it up) and seeing how to find and locate Polaris through it.

Once she had jotted down the angles there she had collected her things, the sextant, a notepad and a quill really. That was all she needed beside her wand that is and skipped merrily to the door. "This seems like a rather interesting assignment Professor," she smiled waved and SKIPPED yes, she actually skipped down the stairs.

Airey managed to return to the classroom after having run around the castle and the grounds checking on students' progress before anyone had returned. He had even been sneaking enough to have gone to the kitchens, stuffed himself with ice cream, and made his way back without staining his suit.
Same could not be said for the melted ice cream in the corner of his lips, however.
Drumming on his desk, he waited for students to return while catching his breath a bit.

"Miss Cambridge! Mr. Tempus! Welcome back," he grinned as he accepted their parchments and placed them in a neat stack on his desk. "Go ahead and take a seat while we wait for the rest of your classmates to return. Or you can do some stargazing on your own if you wish."
He then checked his sundial watch and gave it a quick tap with his finger. About 15 minutes left before he would send out his patronus to call everyone back.
OOC: you have approximately 12 hours from the time of this post to complete the activity!

Let's imagine Forrest left the moment Prof announced the activity :3
¼ of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pls
Fun part? Forrest grinned his biggest grin. He LOVED mechanical toys, and Professor Flamsteed had gifted them the best toy ever. It wasn't actually electrical, it worked solely by his hands. He looked at it lovingly--was it patting it?!?!--and once he had listened to the instructions thorougly, he half-ran out of the door to FUN.
Listening. Yep she was doing that and with no notes for a change because this was just an activity and she felt no notes were necessary.
But the activity, did she like how it sounded?
Yeah kinda at least they didn't have to stay in the classroom, but this measuring thing. Ness couldn't exactly get the point of it. It's not like she'd ever need to use it, she wasn' the kind of person to get lost in the middle of nowhere, plus she could apparate so if she didn't need to use this star and measuring for direction then what for? Hmmmm...she thought about it and of course the only answer she came up with was NEWTs but that was it. So maybe to Airey and other astronomers it meant things but for her it meant nada.
Anyways her NEWTs were important....so activity..she was going to do it. The red head got out her seat and went out the classroom with a pout, trying to think where best to go first was.
Queen of Typos | The OTHER OTHER Roro | WICKED is Good
The snake jogged towards the tower and wished she hadn't gone all the way to the grounds. MAybe staying in the castle in the corridors would have saved sometime? Well, she wouldn't be able to tell, would she? Anyway, no point in regretting anything now that she made it. She practically barged into the class out of breath. Was she late?! Oh nope. That made her take a minute to regain her breath and calm a bit. Phew.
Then she retrieved the parchment from her bag and walked towards Professor Airey. "Here you go Professor, It was really fun," She said handing him both the parchment and the fancy sextant then turned and took a seat.
