Propping open the door to the classroom on the second floor, Josephina then returned to her desk to await the arrival of the students. But instead of reading Arithmancy Today or some other text on the numbers subject, the brunette found herself pulling out a small tub of ice cream and spooned some into a bowl. Pre-lesson treats were allowed, right? Hopefully because even if they weren't she was having some anyway cause she just couldn't resist ....
"G'Morning," she greeted cheerfully through a mouthful of ice cream, grinning as the students entered and took their seats.
ooc: lesson should begin in about 5 hours or so =)

Carefully drawing her circle with a triangular-ish shaped part "cut out" of it, Penelope's mind inevitably wandered to food. Because this was definitely making her hungry. And the idea that they'd be having ice cream soon too didn't help. Couldn't they just have it now? Or could she take a break and get a snack from the kitchen?
Probably not...but she was definitely heading there right when this lesson ended. Least it wasn't too far away, just a few floors. That was less than the amount between it and the common room, at least.
Turning her attention back to her parchment, she looked it over once and decided she was done. Well, that wasn't too bad.

Wait. Her hand raised up. "Professor. I've got a question." she asked. "Are we supposed to choose one shape and move it those four ways? Or are we supposed to do four tile designs?" Because those were two completely opposite things. And if she was supposed to make four tile designs, that would be fun. But if she was just supposed to pick one shape and draw it those four different ways, then she could do it with something really random that didn't tile.
Hearing a question, Hadley looked up distractedly. "Yes, choose one shape and move it one of those four ways." The Arithmancy Professor nodded at the Gryffindor, as she glanced around and noticed many of them hard at work already.

Ella was getting pretty good at those and she'd resort to them if necessary cause now that she didn't have anything to do all she could think of was the frozen treat and sigh...she just really wanted it.
This drawing thing was turning out just fiiiiine, if this worked out the Professor would probably have to schedule a class like this one once every year to get her mind off all the numbers they had to focus on.
Alexa squinted at her parchment trying to figure out if there was anything else she would need to add but when she couldn't think of anything else she decided it was enough and dropped her quill.
"Professor, I think I'm done now. Is this the part where we get ice-cream or is there something else planned first?"
Please don't be the second option.
What if all the ice-cream melted by the time they got through with this?? She would be WIBBLING for the rest of the class!!!

After dippin his Fwooper quill in the ink, the Prefect held the scroll down with the use of his left hand and moved his right to the paper. A drop of ink fell on it when he hovered above the paper for a bit too long and it smudged out on the parchment.
With a soft groan, Daichi placed the parchment aside and grabbed a new one. Yes, he grabbed a new piece just because of one ink drop. Dipping the quill back in the ink, Daichi made sure it didn't drip anymore and began to draw.
The head of the duck first which was a simple circle. The body followed next, making sure to add a bow on the end. He'd decided to leave he feet cause he was horrible at them anyways. With the tip of his tongue sticking out of the corner , Daichi drew the duck on paper.
When he was halfway done, he looked at his piece of *art* and frowned. Okay, so it wasn't like he had thought of in his mind, but atleast you could see it was a duck. Dipping the quill back in the ink, he now began to draw the beak of the duck...it's wings aaaand the finishing touch, the eye~
Grinning, Daichi held his parchment in front of him to admire his work. So now he had to make tessellations of them. Looking at the blackboard, he began to draw a few more ducks until he was done

That had brought it to ninjas or butterflies, and she hadn’t really felt like figuring out if she wanted to draw an actual ninja or just a ninja star like her necklace. Therefore, butterflies it was, and there really hadn’t needed to be too much considered there. She knew exactly what kind of butterfly to draw, and as she looked in her bag, she realized she could color it in. That made her even happier since it meant she’d have a colorful assignment, and on that thought, and after she set up her parchment, she’d started sketching. She had a lot of butterflies to draw after all.
She’d looked up at the example on the board a few times while she’d been drawing, too, just to make sure she hadn’t gotten the wrong idea. She didn’t need to show just how confused she was with why this was a topic for Arithmancy. Not when it was drawing, which was her strong suit. Actually, that almost made the lesson better. There wasn’t any math involved, no calculations. Just pretty pink butterflies, as she finished off the last sketch. All that she had left was to label them all, for her own notes if not the actual assignment. She didn’t think that she wasn’t going to be able to keep the page. Anyway, the labeling didn’t take long either, and soon enough she had finished. Now to wait and see if she’d put in all that work for nothing, or if she’d actually made sense of something in Arithmancy.

The red head grabbed her quill and got to work. First she drew a pair of shoes on the left hand corner of her parchment, just under her name, year and house, then she did the same another three times, each in a different corner. Now she had four replica sketches of her shoes.
Next step. Actually using the four Tessellation that was. Reflection was her first corner, she copied her shoes exact but just switched them around so they'd become a reflection, because that's what it was. Second corner was rotation and to make things easier she rotated her drawing ninety degrees rather than less. She hoped it was okay with Hadley because this way all she needed to do was turn her parchment around and draw the exact same thing. Simple enough. Now. Third corner. She drew an arrow beside her already drawn set of shoes and above that arrow redrew those shoes. Her last corner. Pretty much the same as the third, just with a bit of reflection.
Done she was then. All the different Tessellation methods drawn then. She was ready to move on.

Finishing off the tail she went on to the seventh bird and this time mirrored the image again and translated it. She examined her picture.... okay. Now she had to colour it.
What colour should it be. Birds could be in all colours.. right? Of course she was not going to draw a brown or black bird yet they do exist. Maybe a springy colour... blue? no... GREEN. She could colour the birds in green, green symbolised growth and all. Yes, Green was a great colour for spring. She took out a colour and began to colour... she had ot be careful to colour in the lines and all, yet that was about it. Once the birds were coloured in green she took black agian and went over the lines. Using other colours she finished it off.
Finally she was done. She wrote over each 'scene' what happened there, trying as neatly as possible. Then she put her colouring things away. Now, just look at that drawing.
My scream died before it managed to choke my throat. Why does Professor has to do this to me? She may be an art lover but drawing is just not cup of my tea. I will be hopeless at it. I know that and after few more minutes the entire class and Professor will also come to know that I don't have the slightest taste of tha word Art. Oh my God what am I going to do?
Was sorting hat has lost its marble when it put me to Ravenclaw? Ravenclaw, where clever people has place and I am such an idiot that I can't even draw. But it was work that has been done. I now I'll be the laugh of the class forget about class points but my house point will be reduced for such hopeless work. Laughter of every single person in the class as a bonus.
My head was blocked. It was not blank but blocked yet I had to do something. I took my parchment and begin to scribble. Professor is going to see the most hilarious, dreadful, horrible drawing of her life. I hope she did not take me too seriously to forget what does real art means. For any art lover my drawing is surely a trauma never to recover..
I tried to draw but I was too scared that my hand was trembling, once upon a time I used to have nice Handwriting which is definitely not the case now...
I was done for the day, may be after this I'll never be able to ask a doubt a question or not even show my existence again.. this was my end...
She had tried several drafts of different shapes and items but they all just seemed to not quite fit together. Do they need to fit together seamlessly? Maybe not...? But I think they do? She thought that they did, so she went with a simple shape. Socks. They were a bit squarish...but it that would make them fit together easily later if they needed to do the full mosaic.
She sat back and wondered what everyone else was drawing.

He rubbed his right temple before continuing, trying to replicate the turtles in four different places. ... Were... the fins actually the same shape? Or did they look different.
Okay, no, he was... just going to stick with this.
Right. Tessellation time. The easiest one had to be the translation one because, well, it was just moving the turtle to a new place, yeah? And drawing an arrow on there too. The other three, though, were a little trickier and required a lot more time. Especially the glide reflection. It had to be moved somewhere AND reflected and what if the reflected image didn't end up looking like the main one? Frown some more.
...
A couple of minutes later, Alec sat back and looked at his parchment. It... wasn't his best piece of work, actually but hopefully, Hadley wouldn't mind. Hopefully.

Also, were they going to make a pattern next? He eyed the drawing and quickly decided that a pattern couldn't be made from it...

The question wasn't answered...she noticed and wibbled. This was ice-cream they were talking about 'cept...they weren't talking about it so...this made her a little less than happy, still kinda bouncing and very much staring, but not as happy now because they were moving on, to stuff that would involve more work. More work meant more to be done before they could have the ice-cream. SIIIIIGH.
Oh and would you look at that! It was time for that game where you guessed the guy the Professor was talking about! She sucked at that game, wonderful.
While the Professor spoke she got busying skipping through the pages of her textbook--see Professor, she actually took it out this time--until she came to the topic of tessellations. Obviously she wasn't prepared to read this whole chapter so she skimmed the words until she found a name. Sure there were other names too but...reading...not gonna happen.
"Are you talking about Maurits Cornelis Escher, Professor? I mean, I see his name right here so he could be legit, right?"

Ice cream stickers? They got ice cream stickers? How AWESOME was this?
Alec looked down at the sticker on his parchment and grinned at it. Hadley didn't want their drawings, right? So he could keep this parchment and, more importantly, keep the sticker that was stuck onto it? Because it was an awesome sticker. And smiley too! And did it... smell like ice cream too?
... No, now was not the time. Maybe later. Maybe.
He looked up from his parchment when Hadley started speaking again. Famous dude... someone who was very into tessellations. And this person probably had really complicated looking designs, yeah? "Professor Hadley?" Hand!raise. "Is it... erm... Maurits Cornelis Escher? He... was a Dutch graphic artist person." Who... was very into tessellations, probably. Nodnod.

Ice cream stickers...weren't exactly what Ella had been hoping for. She tried not to frown, though, cause Hadley and stickers were pretty nice. Not as nice as the real thing but still, she appreciated the gesture.
Anyway, famous tessellation maker dude? The blonde wasn't really sure. She listened to Lex offer a name and it sparked something, though the sixteen year old wasn't even sure the gryffindor had been right with her guess. "That Escher guy? I remember reading a bit about him too. He's like...the 'father' of tessllations or something."
Ascanius at first thought BELIEVED that he knew the answer. And yet, he couldn't be sure so he kept his hand down. DaVinci, right? Jeez, that guy did everything so why couldn't it be him? That was what he was gonna go with. But then, he stopped.
People were answering with a different name and they all seemed to be in consensus. Ahem, nevermind him. He was gonna keep his opinion to himself then. Yeah? Yeah.

He was vowing here and now to NEVER eat ice cream ever again....Even if Bee tried to guilt-trip him into doing so...which she was so good at doing...
Yes. NO MORE for him...
As for the next question...everyone seemed to know about this guy Professor Hadley was talking about. He didn't personally know...but given that he was listed in the book, the Slytherin felt he was probably the best guess.
"I'm going to go with the trend and say M. C. Escher..." They're said his whole name. Dylan didn't have to...Oooh, fun fact. "His family called him Mauk."

Nodding at Ella, Dylan offered facts. "Tessella, which is taken from 'tessera' is what I read in the book...and in Latin, that's a cubed-shaped piece of either clay, stone, or glass...that's then used in making mosaic art stuff...'Tessera' itself means 'small square', though." See? He was smart, too.
Also, he and Beezus has seen a ton of mosaic-style art when they'd went to Spain last summer. In Rome, too. Dylan had photographed all the things for his portfolio.

Well, Eliza hadn't known the creator's name so she was glad someone else had. She would've guessed Tesla too since it sounded similar, but she heard now that that would've been incorrect.
She nodded at the other students' answers and joined in. "That all sounds correct, what they're saying about the word tessera. I've heard of something called a Tesseract too and it's a cube inside a cube or something, so that all sounds like the same thing - square type thing." She wondered now about all the parts of the word, like te and tess, and er, and all that. Did those have little baby meanings too?

Nodding at Ella, Dylan offered facts. "Tessella, which is taken from 'tessera' is what I read in the book...and in Latin, that's a cubed-shaped piece of either clay, stone, or glass...that's then used in making mosaic art stuff...'Tessera' itself means 'small square', though." See? He was smart, too.
Also, he and Beezus has seen a ton of mosaic-style art when they'd went to Spain last summer. In Rome, too. Dylan had photographed all the things for his portfolio.

"Yes. Tessellations come from the root word Tessella, which comes from tessara .... tessella means small tile, which is ironic since small tiles are used in creating mosaics." Neat, yes? Of course it was. But enough of artwork. "And technically, there are little squares on an ice cream cone." Beam. See! The treat WAS related!
"Enough about art though, we'll be moving on to another topic, which is similar to art in a sense." She paused a moment, as she prolonged telling them of the next topic in today's lesson. "Music. Math, or arithmatics, can be used to create music. Sound is a travelling wave, which oscillates through matter. An important term in music is called frequency; what is it measured in and what does it mean?"

Laura raised her hands and smiled at the Professor. "That is where you have different radio stations." Laura was sure about that. "They all have their own different frequency."

There are little squares on an ice cream cone? ...O.o There are little squares on an ice cream cone! AHLJHSLKHL! BEAM! And WHY were they talking about this and not doing actual eating of ice cream cones cause Ella was hungry! SO HUNGRY!
Frequency.
Ella knew the word. It was the amount of times something happened, yeah? In music, she was pretty sure it had to do with some kind of vibration or something. "I believe frequency is measured in something called Hertz, Professor. And...it has to do with the number of times something occurs in a certain amount of time." Did that make sense?

Dooooodling. Doodling. Anya was doooooooodling. And she was enjoying herself. So much so that she missed a few questions.
Whoops.
At least her Tessellations were pretty. She'd just ignore that she was only supposed to doodle one thing. She really couldn't help herself.
Anyway. Now that she really couldn't get away with adding more things to her pretty picture...
She raised her hand. "They're measured in hertz. It's the number of times something happens during a set period of time." she offered. Like... the number of waves in a minute. Yup. She learned that in one of her science books.

Music! What a coincidence? Dylan happened to love music. Who didn't, though, right? Cave people...and Eskimos.
Also, he knew this because he played a little bit of guitar and had recorded some stuff personally at home. He gave Ella a smirk as she gave her answer and nodded. Ellaphant was a smart cookie...She could stay.
"The hertz...like Ella said. They also used to be called 'cycles per second'. It's just something that counts time.....For example, 1 hertz (hz) would be an sound or event repeated once every second."

Yeah, she saw the way the Professor was able to add the ice-cream to the lesson but it didn't make it any better. All it did was have her flop desperately on her table and fight the urge to lick the sticker. It's not ice-cream Lex, leave it alone. SIGH. Just a small taste. No one would even notice...
Very slowly, she stuck her tongue out and took a lick of the ice-cream on her parchment. It was just as she thought. Nothing but paper. How VERY disappointing.
Now the Professor had her full and undivided attention again. Unfortunately she tuned back in in time to hear nothing but another question and further continuation of an ice-cream-less class. In future, she would bring her own bowl with her to class. Yup definitely. As for the question. Er...everyone else had answered and they were all saying the same thing. Was she meant to simply repeat it for the sake of having the Professor know she was listening...? Or...could she just sit and stare at her 'til class was done...?
"Like the others said, it's measured in hertz," Uh-huh, she was paying attention, she deserved a chocolate frog in her ice-cream, "and it records the number of times something happens in a given time frame." Or soooomething like that.
Could she lick her sticker again? It was probably melting.

Tobias raised his hand, but was kind of slow and realised he was now going to sound a lot more stupid than the other students who clearly knew what they were actually on about. But that didn't really matter so he shrugged and made his point anyway.
"I always thought that frequency meant how often something happens, and that frequency is also something to do with radios and stuff, like... you tune into a different frequency. I only really just considered this but... like... they're the same thing? So like is a radio frequency where it's at a particular... err... hertz, is it? And like that other girl said, all radio stations could have their own hertz number, so it's like a phone number that you call, or rather that you tune in to to get the right station... and that could be how radio works? Maybe? I mean... that could be with muggle stuff anyway. I don't know about wizard radios..."
He'd gone off topic from music but it still was kind of related, right? He'd only just considered it... like he'd never even thought that that is what frequency could mean, so maybe he was just rambling. As others spoke Tobias glanced out of the window. He could really do with some sugar.

What on earth was going on today!! Minerva looked at Hadley and wanted to scream.. HOLD UP Mama Hadley... Seriously there was word of ice cream and then a bunch of babbling, then this horrible horrible drawing She hated drawing with a passion, she wasn't good at it. So she just did whatever to get it done. Still looking at her drawing she heard voices and looked up. When had they moved on. She didn't miss the ice cream did she. Oh wait she wasn't suppose to be eating it anymore. She promised Ethan she would try not to eat it, but it was so good how could she not eat it.
Now wait how many questions had she missed, she felt so lost, what were they talking about again. She nodded and put her hand up, "Like everyone else said professor Hertz. " Whatever that was suppose to mean. "Wouldn't it be more fun to measure things in like spoons or ice cream cones." Did she just say that out loud.. But oh well it would be more fun, plus they could eat the ice cream before the measured.

The professor was asking a lot of questions, and there wasn't much time for Alice to think up ridiculous answers and share them. Sad. But she was quiet and listened to everything being said and stared some more at the smiley faced teeth in her tessellations. "Hertz. Yeah. What they said."
Yay Arithmancy.
And teeth.

Oh, so...it was back to questions and stuff that Penelope didn't know until other students gave the answers. Cool, so she'd just...sit here and listen and absentmindedly doodle around the sticker on her parchment. It was ice cream shaped already, but obviously it could use a little more decoration. She was still totally listening though. Hertz. Frequency. Sound. Music. She jotted a couple short notes on her parchment too. Definitely paying attention. Still thinking about pizza and ice cream too though. Pizza ice cream. Was there such a thing? They should make that a thing. Mhm.
...But yeah, definitely paying attention to the current question and answers.
