ARITHMANCY LESSON ONE "When you cannot express it in numbers, your knowledge is of meager and unsatisfactory kind." - Lord Kelvin
Josephina propped opened the door to the Arithmancy classroom twenty minutes early today. For an Autumn day with the leaves falling on the grounds everywhere, she felt oddly blissful as it came time for her first lesson of the term.
She pulled herself onto her desk and waited anxiously for the students to arrive, her knees crossed, one foot bouncing anxiously in the air. Can she start early? She wondered how acutely aware the students were of the time on their schedules.
ooc: lesson won't start for another 5-6hours. Please make yourselves comfortable and we'll be with you shortly =)
Simple activity? That's a good start. Thinking a bit, Haruka decided a random even number. Then she doubled it, added twelve, and then divided that number by four.

Oh, hey, class was starting now. Cool, Penelope was glad she didn't have to wait long. And they were starting off with something simple? Also good.
Think of an even number? One popped into her head instantly and she scribbled it down.
Now...math stuff. Double and add and divide? That was new. She couldn't remember them doing anything like this before. Normally it was just adding and subtracting. But she went ahead and did that on her parchment too.

Susan was quickly copying down all everything Professor Hadley said. She wanted to do well in this class and she was hoping taking good notes would help her do that.
Oh crap, Susan didn't think of an even number. Ok, quickly...her favorite number is four so she would us that. Ok, here goes nothing.
SPOILER!!: hopefully correct calculations
4 x 2 = 8
8 + 12 = 20
20 / 4 = 5
Susan hoped that was right...division wasn't her best subject when she was being home-schooled. Well she would find out soon enough.
Mom says I have no sense of direction, so I packed my bags and right.
Oakey sort of nodded his head up and down in agreement to Hadley's explanation about Arithmancy opening up different career opportunities. Was there going to be more lessons on Curse Breaking this term?
Ooooh He hoped so.
After listening to Hadley's instructions Oakey took out a Parchment and wrote down a number
SPOILER!!: Oakey's Parchment
10
After doing so Hadley jumped right on to the next step. So Oakey went right back to his parchment.
SPOILER!!: Oakey's Parchment again
10
10x2=20
20+12= 32
32/4= 8
Bring it on, what was next! Oakey could do numbers.
Hadley scratched absently at her temple for the next student. So familiar .... she met him before , hadn't she? A moment or two later, it clicked. "Hello, yes, lovely to see you and welcome!" Hopefully he would grasp the subject more than his sister. Subject favoritism wasn't hereditary, after all.
Once it seemed as if most of the students had taken their seats, Josephina slid casually off her desk and smiled around at the students, pleased to see several new students present.
She casually flicked her wand at the door to close it and then turned her attention at the class. "Morning everyone! For those of your who don't know, I'm Professor Hadley and I've been teaching Arithmancy here at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for the past nine years." Enough time to complete one nine year cycle. "There are several things you should know before we begin; Arithmancy IS a challenging subject, I won't deny it, and sadly there are many witches and wizards out there today who remain woefully ignorant about the subject and seem proud of this fact. They won't admit if they struggled with charms, but have no problems admitting that they were terrible at Arithmancy. However, being successful at Arithmancy can open one up to many prestigious career opportunities." She paused and allowed the students to relish at the possibilities.
"Generally speaking, Arithmancy is the magical art or science which reveals the mysteries of numbers. However, in the modern sense, Arithmancy is much more than just predictions or a divinatory tool. Numbers are, you see, some of the most magical and mystical spells you will learn, in fact. Which to demonstrate their power, we'll start with a very simple activity. Think of an even number. Write it down, if you must, but don't tell anyone your number."
ooc: whoops! Went to donate blood and it took a little longer than expected! But we're good now <3
Kace was glad the professor remembered her. She seemed warm and welcoming which he loved in a teacher. Then he heard the professor was starting the lesson. He had to think of a random even number. What could it be....
Kace wrote it down in his notebook
SPOILER!!: Kace's Even Number

Hmmm....okay so adding and such...not too hard right? So, take her number double add 12 and then divide by four. Taking out her quill she pull some parchment toward her and did the calculations.

8.... 16.... 28..... 7... West eyed the professor as he mentally did the calculations. Where was she going with this? It was better than normal arithmancy at least. Probably one of those calculation strings where you ended up back at the number you started with or whatever.
For now though, West just watched and waited. Totally better than the personality junk.

Pick an even number? That was... deceptively simple. Isobel tried to make it more interesting by writing as many digits as she could before the professor issued her next instructions.

Hadley called him Alec! Not Summers or Mister Summers or... SHE CALLED HIM ALEC! GRIN.
"That's awesome!" Was he grinning too much? "And it's great to have you back!" Really. She was probably one of the highlights of coming back to Hogwarts. And the idea of getting as much ice cream from the ice cream machine as possible. Or... you know... getting a healthy amount of ice cream from the ice cream machine.
...
Oh look! Girlfriend was here! Alec grinned back at Ells and nudged her back gently. And Tucker! The guy got a grin and an enthusiastic nod, hoping that this would tell him that he was right. And how great was it that the dude had managed to remember his name? Answer? Really great!
But it was time to move on and Alec turned his attention away from Tucker to focus on Hadley instead. So... Arithmancy was great for career prospects? Not for the career he wanted to go into, probably, but it would be great to have it as a back-up, yeah? Yeah.

Theo wasn't excited about today's lesson, and that hadn't changed since the first ever Arithmancy lesson he had in his first year. The first activity seemed simple enough, though, so the Slytherin thought of a number and quickly jotted it down. He covered it up with his hands so no one could see it, as if it really mattered.

Theo paused at the division part. He hadn't done this for years and it was a little rusty. Dividing by four was one of the more easier ones, though. He did a few scribbles over his parchment, squinted his eyes and even used his fingers to count.
Okay.

Minerva sat quietly until it was time for class to start. She did give Susan a small smile as the younger badger sat down. Once Hadley was off her desk and talking, Min focused on listening. She couldn’t help but give a smile to herself when Hadley said about witches not afraid to admit they were horrible at Arithmancy, she was one of them. It wasn’t lack of trying to be better though, no she wouldn’t just say she was bad and be done. She did try, but it still seemed like a harder subject for her.
Once they were to pick a number, Minerva began to think. An even number.. There were so many to choose from, maybe one that not everyone would go for, but how would she know what others went for. Gripping onto her quill, Min wrote down the number.
SPOILER!!: number

Just as she had gotten her number Hadley was quickly saying more things to do.. Hold up momma Hadley, Minerva thought as she looked back at her paper. Now what had she said, double this number and add 12. A quiet giggle left her lips since she was going to be doing all 12’s with her calculation.
SPOILER!!: numbers..

Now she wanted them to divide four.. Minerva quickly took the total and divided by four.

It just so happened that Elodie hated the word divide. Mainly because when she was taught HOW to divide, it always ended up being regarding her amount of food, especially cake and sweets. And that wasn't fair.
The practice however, meant she was more than capable of doing these quick number thing in her head.
Four.
Eight.
Twenty.
Five.
Nothing was really very exciting about the number five. But she would roll with it.

Josephina was watching as the students got to work with the simple warm-up activity. She did smile at one particularly creative Ravenclaw girl when she wrote an excessive amount of digits. Should be interesting if this played out correctly regardless of the number of digits...

So her answer was 10.
Which it should work out correctly, provided people are consistent with what digits they use. "Uh Min, you wrote your original number as 12, but then you followed through with your calculations as if your original number was 14." Just so she's aware for the next step because it'd make a difference.
"So the final step of this warm-up is to take half of your original number and subtract it from your last total." She paused to let them work this bit out.

Half of her original number, okay, that wouldn't be too hard, if Isobel could even remember what her original number was. The next bit took quite a bit of mental maths, Isobel not wanting to scribble equations all over her notes, but she got there eventually.
Three. That was... anticlimactic? Unexpected, to say the least. She wondered what some of the other students had gotten, and wanted to try to peer over the shoulder of the person in front of her, but resisted so as not to look like she was cheating somehow. Or just weird.

After all the calculations, Jory ended up with a three. He wondered if that would also be the other answers from the students. He waited for Professor Hadley to continue.
So this was only a warm up. Maybe that was why it was such simple math. Nigel would be happy with this type of math for the rest of the class. But he knew he was just dreaming.
Okay so he had to take half of his original number which would be 7 and subtract it from his last total which was 10. Sounds easy enough

This was a warm up? Were they going to have more of this later on? She was actually enjoying it so she didn't mind if they were going to have more of it. It was making her brain work....with numbers. That was a good thing, okay?
Last steps were to take half of the original number and subtract it from the last total.
Okay, then.
Last total was 6. And her original number was also 6. So...
