The classroom was exactly the way it always had been; desks and chairs laid out in parallel rows, the small dais upon which the professor's big desk sat with a rememberall on it that's been obviously pushed to the side. The desks were freshly clean with a couple pieces of wood and a strange tool placed on top of each one of them. The professor would be standing at the door leaning slightly on his cane, waiting for the students to arrive and greeting them from the corridor. Once the students entered the classroom, they would find that the rectangular blackboard fixed to the wall over the dais had a message written on it:

Yeah, that first line looked pretty much done, and now that he'd chanted the galdr once it seemed a lot easier to remember. All he really had to do was pay attention to how many times he had to 'aw'.
So, two more lines to carve and he wanted to make sure he had the galdr sang or chanted or whatever PERFECTLY because Tobias wanted to IMPRESS.
Even as he resumed carving, a smile was evident on Toby's face.
"Okay, so... ansuz ansuz ansuz aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw..." BREEEEEEATHE "aw aw aw aw aw aw s s s s s s aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw..." BREEEEEEEATHE "... aw."
These lines were about as deep as the first one he'd carved, and the rune could definitely be classed as carved... but was it glowing?
Frowning eeeeeeeeeeever so slightly, Tobias set down the burin and leaned closer to the desk and eyyyyyyed the rune.

The galdr song got repeated two more times in full, Dylan taking advantage of the last few moments to complete the activity before they moved on to something else. It was true, he really enjoyed the chanting and stuff...but hated not being able to dance with it. With the burin in hand, someone could've gotten hurt...and blah, blah, blah...
It was lame being responsible sometimes.
However, he DID complete the Dagaz rune and was now taking a much needed rest. It'd taken EFFORT to not dance....and upon further look, his rune was glowing again...Like, not obviously...but there was something there. Just like after the last lesson...and how the rune had mysteriously lit up for him...
...and he also had a question...
"Will we be staining these runes, Professor?" Dylan tried to ignore the weird glow...

Alice was still moping, 'cause she felt mopey for reasons and stuff. But staring at the Thurisaz carved into her block of wood, she started thinking about carving other runes. And.. hand up. Still quiet, but talking. "Professor, can you do bindrunes with a Burin? Or do those work better with the charm? Is there a way to, like, combine Galdr songs of two or more runes to make one with this tool? Or carve one over the other?"
Probably not, but she wanted to check to be sure.
And mope some more. She wanted to do that too.
Hmm? Botros moved from the first year Hufflepuff to the oddly quiet Captain and put a hand on her shoulder as he peered to her carved rune. Thurisaz? Why not Uruz? "Binding runes is something you make, there is no solid steps as to how you bind those runes together. It depends on your intent and the type of runes you use. So before you carve the shape of the bindrunes using the Bunir, you're expected to merge the Galdr songs into one." He gave the young girl a smile and waited a moment to see if she was satisfied with this answer.

Letting go of Fischer's shoulder finally, the professor squeezed his big belly between the sitting students' shoulders and headed for the little kid. "Let's see." Ab leeeeeeeeeeaned down to the piece of wood and recognized Ansuz, "Oh! Ansuz. One of Odin's runes, I can see the glow, mhmm." More like candle flickering glow but the boy had picked an intense rune! Such ambition. Botros patted the boy's shoulder encouragingly, "It definitely counts." Good job!

... oh this question didn't require him to move between the desks again. "No, Captain Montmorency, we won't be reddening them. We'll be doing something much more challenging." The old man walked back to the small dais where his desk stood upon and faced the class.
Botros was satisfied about the general outcome of most of the activity's outcome. He clapped twice, demanding everyone's attention. "Very good everyone." They carved one rune on the whole piece of wood, that was nice. Although they were going to carve a much smaller runes on the next one. "Put the Burins away for a bit and listen carefully." He moved to the blackboard and held his wand high. "We're going to do something a little bit more challenging than carve a single rune on a piece of wood and reddening it." His features lit up a bit, hoping they would like what they were about to do as much as he usually does. "We're going to write complete words in runes." How exciting! " Elder Futhark is still our alphabet of use, now pay attention." He was not going to repeat anything.
"It's not a typical translation process, you don't look for the word's meaning in the Elder Futhark - you simply replace the modern letters with the equivalent ones from the ancient alphabet." That was rule number one.
"Second rule is that we use the phonetic form of the word when we're converting to Futhark. For example, the word 'have' is written as 'hav' in Futhark. You do not write the 'e' at all." Pause. Everyone was writing notes? Yeeeees? Good. "That being said, remember to keep only one letter if there are double letters in a word. We write 'happy', for example, as 'hapy'." Phonetic form of the word only.
"Third note is that the ancient Scandanavian folk, from which most of the runic alphabets are taken from, pronounced sounds differently from us. For example, they do not have the sound the letter 'w' makes. Therefore, 'w' is written as a 'v' when you're translating into Futhark." Professor Vinteren and Romanos, anyone? "Same goes with 'J', write it as 'y'." He started writing those down on the blackboard.
"Also the sound 'th', as in 'thing' is written as the single rune Thurisaz, not a combination of Tiwaz and Hagalaz." Botros wrote that down and turned back to the students. "The sound 'ng' in 'thing', is written as a single Ingwaz, too, and not Nauthiz and Gebo." He wrote that too.

A word, two words, several words, a letter even! Anything that fit on a 40x40 cm piece of wood. "You should use your parchment to help you writing whatever you like, and then carve your name (the sender's name) on the second piece of wood on your desk." Merlin knew those kids needed some help to socialize civilly among themselves. "Then fold the parchment and attach it to your piece of wood before handing it to that person." It would be a great souvenir of this class and term. Botros was big on souvenirs! "I will join you too!" He took a piece of wood and pushed the rememberall, that had sat on the desk all this time, into the drawer instead. "Let me show you how I will write the following:" He turned to the blackboard and wrote:
He was going to write something else in a minute, that was for demonstration. "Any questions? You may begin if you don't have any."
ooc: - You can use this to aid you to write in runes, but those digital 'generators' do not follow the rules the professor explained about phonetics, so pay attention to that.
- Number of posts is not determined, it's the quality of your RP that will determine the points you will earn.
- Everyone, you can use this to help you make your own graphics of the runic letter/line you're writing. Making your own graphics will probably earn you more points.

Ella put her Burin aside and listened carefully as Professor Botros told the class what they'd be doing next. The blonde's green eyes gleamed with excitement and she even bounced a bit at the thought of writing in runes. This. was. cool. Mostly because it was something she'd never done before and she was eager to give it a go. Could she? Could she start right now? Huh, huh, huhhhh?
Oh. Rules. Right.
The blonde calmed herself down and listened carefully to how they were supposed to create their messages, scribbling down what Botros had on the board so she could reference it as she worked.

After watching Professor Botros' example, the blonde smiled a little and scanned the room, wondering who to write to. Her eyes landed on a very familiar head of ruffled hair and she grinned. Alec. She was going to write a note to Alec.
Pulling a piece of fresh parchment towards her, she decided to get working on what message she'd want to write first.
Even the youngest in his class. Botros only leaned on his cane a bit when he moved forward toward the Hufflepuff kid, "Sowilo, not Sowlio." He corrected kindly and flipped the textbook for the boy. "You'll find it here, in the Galdrs section."
As Kace was having trouble finding it in his textbook. He noticed the Professor was helping him. He gave him a warm smile. He was glad that he was getting some help. He was struggling. Ancient Runes was not his strongest subject. At least he took pitty on him. Then once he flipped to the right page. It ALL made sense. He was gonna start doing the chant now and do the carving.
Alright so the chant for this was kind of confusing. He even wrote it down to make sure.

He felt SO foolish saying this. But everyone in the class was doing it. So what if he looked like a fool. Might as well have fun doing it! Then he took his carving tool, it still looked like a pumpkin carver and then he was gonna do it! It was supposed to glow. So that is how he knew it could work.
He began to chant for real this time......

So Far SO good! He was getting happier as he was carving. Then he was finishing the last bit.

Then it GLOWED brightly! Sweet he did it! Then he heard the professor move on and knew he had to put down his tool for this explanation.
Asher's eyes went wide. He wondered if the professor realized he was only twelve...and just a first year. He was baffled at how he could possibly do the assignment.
Jotting down the notes as fast as he could, Asher kept checking his text book and the example the professor gave. He figured that there would have to be a way to do the assignment.
He looked around the room and selected a student to write the note to. Once he saw who he would be giving the note to, Asher began figuring out the lettering on his parchment.

Writing in runes? Sky had had enough trouble learning to write in Spanish! And that used the same letters as English! Now she was being expected to learn to write in a language that used completely different letters?! Not to mention that this had nothing to do with jewelry! Sigh. Well, at least it wasn't ice cream or cleaning. Still, she opened up her textbook and set to work.

It was ALL IT TOOK for Tobias not to full on FIST PUMP when the professor said that his rune thingy counted. That meant he'd done it RIGHT. SHOULDER PAT TOO.
TOBY WAS A RUNES STARRRRRRR.
His eyes went wider than EVER when Botros went on and told them about WRITING stuff in runes. Like. WORDS. THAT WAS SO WICKED. That was EXACTLY what he'd been hoping to do in this lesson at one point. It was like a secret code and everything.
Tobias WOULD have bounced but he quickly realised that he had better note down DA RULES and stuff for writing. He already KNEW who he was going to write his message to, he just needed to decide exactly how he would say it... and then there would be the tricky bit of actually translating it using all those rules. The phonetics thing was confusing, but he'd work it out soon.
Once his notes were written down, Tobias looked around and glanced at the person he was writing his message to and then focused on a fresh sheaf of parchment. Right, focus time.

So...yeah.
Ella wanted to write something short, sweet, and to the point. She also wanted to write something that wasn't too long because if it was super long, there was so much more she could mess up. Failure just simply wasn't an option, okay? This was a Botros class! She couldn't stomach doing badly in this class. Besides, sometimes the simplest messages meant the most, yeah? You didn't need a bunch of words to get a point across.
The blonde tapped her quill on her parchment as she went over her notes carefully, taking a few minutes to really absorb the information fully. When she was pretty clear on everything, she began to write.
Oh so now they were gonna write messages to a classmate using Runes? Umm...now THAT sounded complicated. He just learned to carve a rune and chanted it's song or whatever. Now he was gonna have to remember the alphabet. This lesson was moving fast...but Kace could handle it.
So now he had to choose who he wanted to write to. He looked around and noticed Cassia! He smiled and remembered the first time they met at the Owlery. Yeah he decided to write one to her. He looked in his textbook to help teach him how to write this language.
He might struggle but at least he was doing it right?

So, writing it out. Sky thought she was doing it correctly, but you never knew. And of course, she couldn't even tell if it looked correct, because this was all new to her. Sigh. Why couldn't it have been something just slightly easier? Then again, it was pretty cool that Professor Botros had this much confidence in them. Anyway, she was done. Now, who to give it to?

Dylan nodded thoughtfully, his quill flying over parchment once more. He was taking all the notes, of course. Also, how awesome was this! Professor Botros was teaching them how to write in runes! Ugh, the Slytherin had always wanted to learn...and lacked real motivation to teach himself the difficult art...or whatever. So, he glanced up at at the board, jotting everything down that the Professor had notated.

Botros almost sat at his desk and started his own letter, his eyes found the Slytherin and chuckled lightly. "Yes, yes. It applies on names as well as words. Names are words in Runes, it explains why the names of the Norse gods are carved on talismans and considered as powerful as any other runic spell." The professor had walked closer to the Captain and leaned on his cane. As for his second question, HMMM. "It depends on how it sounds in your word. 'Q' is pronounced as 'K' mostly, therefore you can replace it with Kenaz." He smiled and waited for a moment to see if the boy had anything else to add.

... hmm? Botros craned his neck to one of the girls sitting nearby and squinted for a moment at her parchment. "You may want to check that first and last word, dear." He patted her shoulder to get her attention. "Write it as you say it. Just like a five-years-old learning how to write for the first time." And gave her a small smile. The dots were missing too.

The snake listened carefully to what they needed to do. She had no idea that runes could actually be written with. Well, that's why there were in school to learn riiiiiiight. Cassia reached for her notebook and started copying of the blackboard. IT was easier for her to look at her note book for reference. While scribbling she considered all of it and started thinking to whom she was going to write a short letter. Hmmm...
Her eyes wondered around the room as she considered people.
Not having decided yet, Cassia started practicing her name. Since she'd sign the letter she sent with her name. First thing she did was remove an 'S' from her name.Because that was how it went. Then she started replacing letters with runes referring to the notes giving by the professor.

Steps:

2. Replace each letter with the suitable rune:
- Pay attention to the W, J, TH, Z, X, I and NG sounds.

She finally decided to write the letter to Lex. Since she was her bestie and all. Also, she didn't want to write something long because it'd take her lots of time and if she wanted to write to anyone else it'd take at least two sentences. She couldn’t do that in short time. Reaching for her quill, Cassia scribbled one sentence and started replacing each letter with the rune referring to the notes given by the professor on the black board which she copied.

Her brows were furrowed and her tongue was stuck out in concentration as she looked for runes and scribbled the names of the runes. Why did the runes have to have such strange names? Hmmm? This was hard.
Wiping the non-existent sweat of her forehead dramatically, Cassia held up the parchment and started checking the runes against the list on the board. It'd be not cool to think you're sending something then ending up saying totally different thing in the letter.
All good. Cassia folded the parchment then put it aside, she had to carve Lex's name on the other piece of wood then hand it to Lex. SPEAKING OF! Was Lex looking. The snake shoved the parchment into her notebook. T'was surprise don't LOOK, Lex!

Well excuuuuuse us for just wanting to learn something today. Lex looked over at Cassia when she suddenly snatched up her parchment. Yeah...there was some wibbling. Did she really want to see her fail this class??? Not that she would. Before the girl could properly hide away her knowledge Lex DID get a look but she only saw Cassia write her name...'least now she knew who she was addressing it to. The only name she could spell in Runes.
But, if she was being honest she got a bit of a better understanding--SEE?? COPYING HELPED!! Now she was ready to make an attempt.
Her name would be a good start because that's what Cassia did first, unless they tried taking letters from there too? She could keep the few letters she had, right? No more butchering of proper spellings? Hopefully not. She quite liked the way her name was spelled.

Well, hopefully Lex didn't see the letter because it'd be cooler if it stayed a surprise. Cassia glanced at Lex and raised an eyebrow, whut? you'll see later. But she didn't say anything, the lioness will know later. Cassia reached for her textbook and flipped through the pages looked for the chants. She was going to carve Lex's name. And she wasn't going to carve 'Alexa' because it was harder, ok?
First rune was Laguz. Cassia reached for the Bruin and pointed it at the piece of wood then started the chant.

So many Ls. Cassia kept her eyes on the wood and grinned seeing the rune on it. Phew. She didn't have to chant it again. Now to the next rune, Cassia continued flipping until she got to Ehwaz. Now to chant, she cleared her throat and started,

Okay, first things first, what would she write to Cassia? Something nice even though she wouldn't let her copy her work? YES! THAT! She would write something along those lines then Cassia would know she didn't have any hard feelings about what she just did. They were still best friends afterall and she did hold the Parchment still long enough for her to see what she needed. That was worth something.
So here she went. Had to translate and all that.

Last letter and then she gives the letter and the piece of wood to Lex. Almost done. Cassia peered at her notes and saw that the last rune she needed to carve was Algiz. And so she started searching for the chant in the textbook.Hmm…hmmm.. where was it. Personally, she had not used this chant and wondered if there even was a chant. But then, all runes did so she just had to look harder. THERE! She found it!
Taking a deep breath and eyeing the lots of Zs in the chant, Cassia started eyes on textbook.

She paused and did that whistling deep sound, she sounded like a cockroach. Eeeeh. Anyway, moving on

Turning her attention back to the piece of wood she grinned seeing the third rune there! Good, she wouldn't have chanted it again no matter what. Nope, not a chance. The snake, then reached for the folded parchment and tied it to the piece of wood then pushed herself off her seat and stood.
HAI LEX! Walking over to the lioness, Cassia grinned and put the letter and the piece of wood before the girl. "Here, it's for you." Duh. She stood and waited till Lex opened the letter and all. Though Lex shouldn't copy from the letter, Cassia wouldn't mind but probably the Professor would.
Unless he didn't notice.
And what was Lex doing? Was that a letter? To whom??

Oh? Was she back to the part where she was jabbing away at the board?? She was more than happy to go back to that. Only thing was...Cassia had five letters...her arm would get tired--unless...you know, technically, she calls her Cass sometimes...and there's that whole rule about the double 's' sooo...CAS! She could do that!!!
Lex got the tool again and went on with her merry jabbing and chiseling like earlier, only now she was chanting to a different rune song.
First letter, 'C'.

Because this was for her. She just wasn't done yet. "Gee thanks! Hang on-don't move. I'm making this one for you and I'm almost done!!!"
'Almost' being the operative word.

"You should use your parchment to help you writing whatever you like, and then carve their name on the second piece of wood on your desk." Merlin knew those kids needed some help to socialize civilly among themselves. "Then fold the parchment and attach it to your piece of wood before handing it to that person." It would be a great souvenir of this class and term. Botros was big on souvenirs! "I will join you too!" He took a piece of wood and pushed the rememberall, that had sat on the desk all this time, into the drawer instead. "Let me show you how I will write the following:" He turned to the blackboard and wrote:

His notes became steadily messier the faster he scribbled them down but that didn't bother him. Except... it did mean that he'd have to spend longer than he thought he would on studying for this subject later. And that also meant less time to himself. Groan.
Right. Write a letter. He could do that. He needed to pick... someone... to write... to...

Was Cassia still waiting? She had to be because Lex was down to her last letter!! She glanced up to make sure she was still there and thought to latch on to her hand or he robe so she couldn't leave but then...she kinda needed both hands for this chisel!carve!jab thing.
Okay, she would trust her to just keep standing there while she got this thing finished up. Just the 'S'. Sowilo. Carving the letter 's' was kinda hard thooooough.

Carve carve chisel jab carve. This one took some extra concentration but when she was finally done she attached the parchment to the wood and shoved it toward her with a WIDE grin.
"This is for yoooooooou!!!" And more grinning because even though she copied, it still got done!

Now that Ella had the rules and her translations written out in her notes, she was ready to compose her message on a fresh piece of parchment using the symbols. The blonde pulled one towards her and smiled a little to herself before starting. This really was cool.
The badger worked slowly, eyes wandering from her notes, to her textbook, and back to the parchment each time she needed to write a new symbol. She was writing in her neatest handwriting too. A must, she thought.
After a while, the sixteen year old glanced down at her work and decided she was finished. Her message was done. Or...at least she thought it was done. Would Botros be coming around to check these before they gave them out? Hm.
Well, in any case, her message was finished. Now she could move on to carving Alec's name.
Not knowing exactly what to do, Asher decided he could at least write his name.
