The classroom was exactly the way it always had been; desks and chairs laid out in parallel rows, the small dais upon which the professor's big desk sat with a rememberall on it that's been obviously pushed to the side. The desks were freshly clean with a couple pieces of wood and a strange tool placed on top of each one of them. The professor would be standing at the door leaning slightly on his cane, waiting for the students to arrive and greeting them from the corridor. Once the students entered the classroom, they would find that the rectangular blackboard fixed to the wall over the dais had a message written on it:

Finally the snake decided on a rune. Tiwaz! And she had no idea why she chose it but didn't really matter. What mattered that she should start already. Cassia grabbed the Burin and the smaller wood. And started the chant
"tiwaz tiwaz tiwaz
t i i i i i r r r r r
tu ta ti te ter tor
tur tar tir ter tor"
Umm..could she have chosen an easier chant? Come to think of it, there were ones that were easier. This had so many Rs and Ts. Eeeeh. She complemented whether to change her mind now and chose another rune but the decided against it. It'd take her more time and she didn't have time to spare. So she continued,
"tiwaz tiwaz tiwaz
t i i i i i r r r r r
tu ta ti te ter tor
tur tar tir ter tor
ot et it at ut
(Tyr Tyr)
T i i i i i r r r r r"
La-la-laa! She stared at the wood waiting for the carving thing to happen. Come on!

Come onnnnnn, rune! Ella was nearly done with her carving and she'd been meticulous as she worked. Now she just hoped the thing would glow so she'd know she did it right.
"kenaz kenaz kenaz
ku ka ki ke ko
kun kan kin ken kon
ok ek ik ak uk
kaunnnnnnnnn"
Squinttttt. Still no glowing. Sigh. The sixteen year old finished off her carving and continued chanting, watching closely and hoping for a good end result.
"kenaz kenaz kenaz
ku ka ki ke ko
kun kan kin ken kon
ok ek ik ak uk
kaunnnnnnnnn"
Oh! Oh, oh, oh! It was glowing! It wasn't like super-glowing or anything but there was a definite glow happening and Ella grinned, head tilted to the side as she observed her work. This was a good sign, yeah? She stifled the urge to wave around her Burin in triumph, not wanting to poke anyone's eye out.

With his rune chosen, it was time to sing that song, he supposed. He picked up his Burin and moved the piece of wood into position. And obviously he had his textbook on hand to look back and forth at the words.
Here goes nothing.
"wunjo wunjo wunjo
wu wa wi..." He paused... taking a good look at his textbook.
Okay, let's start over.
"wunjo wunjo wunjo
wu wa wi we wo
wun wan win wen won
wo we wi wa" Paaaause... "wu"
".....w w w u u u n n n"
Nothing appeared to be happening just yet, so Theo took the opportunity to get the words from his textbook swimming through his brain. He wasn't FAR off with the pronunciation. It was a lot easier than casting spells, you know. He cleared his throat, had his Burin ready, and tried again.

Some sort of carver. Burin. She took note of that on her parchment and listened to what was next.
Carving with this burin thing. Okay she was game for that, just not too game for the whole singing thing. Her voice was not entirely made for that, but heh work was work and she wanted to work hard.
So rune? She chose the first one she saw, and could barely pronounce it. Fehu. Or Fay-who. That's how she attempted to read it in her head and did okay. The other pronunciations looked much worse anyways.
And the meaning of this fehu was kinda interesting, as long as it was easy to carve though.
After realizing he was supposed to be carving while chanting, Asher gave it another try. He picked up the small wood block and the tool before chanting
Raspberry Jam | #ChocolateFrogFamous | Ultimate Fangirl
After going over the words from the textbook before continuing anymore, Theo felt much more ready. With his Burin at the ready, he began the chant once more.
"wunjo wunjo wunjo
wu wa wi we wo
wun wan win wen won
wo we wi wa wu
w w w u u u n n n"
........
Anything? Nope? Try one more time, then. WITH FEELING.
"wunjo wunjo wunjo
wu wa wi we wo
wun wan win wen won
wo we wi wa wu
w w w u u u n n n!"
Oooooh, the glowing! Did that mean he had done it? Theo nodded and BEAMED, because it really didn't take him that long to master it. Which was certainly surprising. He put the Burin down and watched the glow and stuff. Now what?

Taking the carver in hand and picking up the smaller piece of wood to place it closer, Renesmee got to work. The rune looked like the letter F and that made things a little easier for the eighteen year old. It was at least a shape she was familiar with rather than lines all scrambled together that she had never seen before in her life.
Jaaab. Tick. Scraaaap. She carved away and in almost audible whisper began singing along as she carved.
"fehu fehu fehu
f f f f f f f f f
fu fa fi fe fo
of ef if af uf
f f f f f f f f f"
It sounded like she was singing the song fe fi fo fum from Jack and the Beanstalk. Talk about feeling like a three year old again. Errrr....
At least her first vertical line was almost done.
"fehu fehu fehu
f f f f f f f f f
fu fa fi fe fo
of ef if af uf
f f f f f f f f f"
After singing the galdr one last time she looked at her fairly straight vertical line. All she had to do now was the two horizontal lines to complete her F and her fehu rune.

Rune chosen. Gloves on tight. He was ready to--
Erm... wait. What was the chant again? He peered over at the textbook and tried to chant the chant over and over again in his head. Because the usual problem with these chats was that they were difficult to pronounce. Or... maybe... that was the case with the ones that tended to begin with the letter 'r'. Maybe.
Shrugging, he clutched onto the smaller piece of wood in one hand and the Burin in his other hand and started chanting. "Dagaz dagaz dagaz... dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh... d d d a a a g g g a a a z z z..." Not... too difficult... "...du da di de do... dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh... odh edh idh adh udh... od ed ud ad ud... d d d a a a g g g a a a z z z..."
Not too difficult at all. It was just... taking a long time. Or did it usually take longer with the Burin?
"Dagaz dagaz dagaz... dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh... d d d a a a g g g a a a z z z... du da di de do... dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh... odh edh idh adh udh... od ed ud ad ud... d d d a a a g g g a a a z z z..."
This time Nessie did everything just like before, except she did it all horizontally and twice, in two parallel lines that were attached by her previous vertical line. At the end it would all form the f shape that she needed.
Scratch. Jab. Scraaaap and Sing. "fehu fehu fehu
f f f f f f f f f
fu fa fi fe fo
of ef if af uf
f f f f f f f f f"
In a matter of minutes her first line was formed and straighter than her vertical line. Lifting her head up she looked at her line for a moment then went back to scratching and singing with her burin.
"fehu fehu fehu
f f f f f f f f f
fu fa fi fe fo
of ef if af uf
f f f f f f f f f"
Last line done, and apparently correct as it was glowing oh so beautifully. A small smile lit up on Nessie's face as she was pleased with her rune results.
Carving runes sounded super fun, and Toby was pleased that he'd correctly assumed and guessed that they'd be carving. That meant he wasn't going to be disappointed because it totally sounded SUPER fun.
But first, a rune. Tobias' book was kinda sorta still in his bag so he quickly retrieved it and sat sideways on his chair, book on his lap, while he rifled through the pages looking for the right chapter.
Okay... now to pick a rune.
HmmmmmmMMMMMMMMMMMmmm.
Ooh, here was one for... luck and good fortune? That definitely sounded pretty awesome, so Toby chose that one. He quickly jotted down the rune he was doing, and set his book on the table so he could see the weird chanty song thing, and then got his gloves out of his bag and put them on. Before he started he read the summary of 'ansuz' and the galdr that went with it. You know. To be thorough.
That was going to be weird to say out loud...

There was no glowing to speak of yet so... the chanting had to continue. Yep. "Dagaz dagaz dagaz... dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh... d d d a a a g g g a a a z z z... du da di de do... dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh... odh edh idh adh udh... od ed ud ad ud... d d d a a a g g g a a a z z z..." Chant chant chant... carve carve carve...
... Although... he couldn't help but wonder if the rune carving process really did take longer with the Burin. Or did it not take as long as the Intaglio and wand method? ... And... was courage a key factor in this?
...
"Dagaz dagaz dagaz... dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh... d d d a a a g g g a a a z z z... du da di de do... dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh... odh edh idh adh udh... od ed ud ad ud... d d d a a a g g g a a a z z z..." Keep on chanting... keep on carving... la la la... ""Dagaz dagaz dagaz... dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh... d d d a a a g g g a a a z z z... du da di de do... dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh... odh edh idh adh udh... od ed ud ad ud... d d d a a a g g g a a a z z z...""
...
THERE. It was... glowing? Was that it? The shape of the rune was there and... and... yeah, it was sort of glowing! He placed the Burin down and just... sort of... looked at the wood with the glowing rune on it. GRIN. How AWESOME was this?
... Botros frowned. A real frown that's rarely seen on his kind face. "You have no idea what to do?" He repeated and looked at the other kids who were following his instructions without any complaints. "Maybe you should've paid more attention then, miss Hyde." Not happy with this Hufflepuff constantly getting 'stuck' in his classes about the simplest things but he still was going to help her, she could be... a special case. "What are you stuck with?" The tool was in front of her, so was the wood piece, and the textbook.
Laura looked at the Professor and sighed. "I'm sorry Professor, I've been trying to listen but I have a massive headache and I just feel so down." Laura was getting nearly ready to cry, seriously why did every Professor think that she would mess up on purpose, she was trying her hardest.
Carving runes... AGAIN! They seemed to always do this. But she had to, and participating in classes earned her points and not all learning needs to be fun and...... A lot of self talk was needed to get her to start and participate in AR.
What rune should she use? Uruz sounded good because she needed the energy. She was willing to try anything if it meant regaining her strength, because these days she was always so tired. It was aweful to be fatigued.
Actually maybe Sowilo would be better as that is for health. She will do Sowilo and hope it gave her strength. Soe--wee-low.
Wait, she had forgotten something. Gloves of course. She went over and got a pair of gloves

With the bruin still in had, Cassia kept her eyes glued on the wooden piece. Eeeeh. Shouldn't be there like runes and stuff? She peered at her textbook trying to see if she had made a mistake with the chanting. The thing is she couldn't remember. Finally, she decided to do it again.
"tiwaz tiwaz tiwaz
t i i i i i r r r r r
tu ta ti te ter tor
tur tar tir ter tor"
She paused taking a breath and shifting in her seat to look at the rest of the chant at the bottom of the page. Eeeek. It took her a couple of seconds until she found where she got.
"ot et it at ut
(Tyr Tyr)
T i i i i i r r r r r"
There! Finished. She looked again at her wooden piece and grinned seeing the runes. She wasn't that bad, it turned out. She sat the tool on the desk then looked around seeing what others were doing. Some of them have already finished and others were still carving.
She leaned back on her seat and waited for what they were going to do then. Hopefully something interesting and easy.

Kace was gonna try and chant and carve. But then again he needed a refresher on his chant. He had NO idea where to find it in his textbook. He raised his hand timidly.
"Erghh...Professor i have no idea where to look for my chant for Sowlio..." he said still searching his book. He had his carving tool ready, he just needed a little help that is all.
Laura looked at the Professor and sighed. "I'm sorry Professor, I've been trying to listen but I have a massive headache and I just feel so down." Laura was getting nearly ready to cry, seriously why did every Professor think that she would mess up on purpose, she was trying her hardest.
"If you're feeling unwell, you may leave the classroom." He nodded seriously, not unkindly. He wasn't going to waste the time of his class on sad kids (no matter how unfortunate that was). He had a bunch of other oddly quiet people in here, the Captains for example, and they were perfectly paying attention to the lesson.

Even the youngest in his class. Botros only leaned on his cane a bit when he moved forward toward the Hufflepuff kid, "Sowilo, not Sowlio." He corrected kindly and flipped the textbook for the boy. "You'll find it here, in the Galdrs section."

It was a little unusual for Wade to be this quiet during the class. His mind was merely on jotting down the notes and instructions. They were going to be carving, and that always required a lot of brow furrowing and concentration from Wade.. It was a good thing he wasn't tired.
Okie doke, now he could don his gloves and decide on the rune to carve. Flipping through his textbook to the appropriate section, his hazel eyes scanned the text. Wade always liked to pick the runes that suited him and his feelings, and right now.. Heh. He knew 'Dagaz' was going to be the one to carve given everything. A fresh start and new beginnings.. Yep.
Right, now to take that piece of wood and start some serious carving. His gloves were still on as he picked up the Burin.
Okay, right... so he had to chant and carve at the same time. That could be... tricky. But at least the rune looked like an easy one to remember and carve. That was good, because Tobias had a feeling he'd be mostly focused on the chant.
Once he had the smaller piece of wood ready, he grabbed the handle of the burin and took a breath to ready himself.
Without further ado, he started carving the first line of the rune, mainly focused on the book but occasionally glancing at the wood to make sure he wasn't royally screwing up.
"Uhh... ansuz ansuz ansuz... aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw... uh... aw aw aw aw aw aw..." Aw? Aw aw aw? AaaaaaAAWWWWWW. Awwawawawawawwwaww. FOCUS TOBIAS. "s s s s s s..." At this, Tobias took a moment. He knew this was serious but he didn't half feel like an idiot as he sang the galdr. Right, anyway. "aw aw aw aw aw aw... aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw aw..."
And that was the end of the galdr, but Tobias had only just finished the one line, if that. He supposed he just had to repeat it until it was done. Well okay then.
ON WITH THE GALDR!

"I'm afraid I'm not familiar with those carved desks, Mr. Montmorency. Perhaps they were moved somewhere by the house-elves." Or disposed of? HMMM. They were not going to carve their desks, though, if that was what the Captain was hoping.
Botros clapped his hands twice. "Very good guesses, most of you got this right. This-" He turned around and grabbed the one on his desk. "-is called a Burin. It's a carving tool, used to carve runes onto wood. But to make them magical you're going to have to chant the galdr song for the rune you're carving." It was really simple to explain, but hard to apply considering the lack of carving skills of most kids, and the lack of patience too.
Ab took out his wand and levitated three boxes from under his desk that floated around the class, "Please take a pair of protective gloves, we are going to practice using these Burins. The tools we're using will not harm your skin but still try to be cautious when you hold them. I do not want to see anyone waving anything around." Eyes on the reckless loud Gryffindor Cambridge.
He waited for a moment for everyone to wear their gloves. "There are two pieces of wood on your desk. Take the smaller one and grab the Burin from its big handle." He demonstrated with his own Burin. "Then start carving any rune you desire onto that piece of wood." Easy as that. "Remember to chant the Galdr song affiliated with the chosen rune. And just like the spell we learned earlier this term, the rune will glow when you've done it right." He smiled encouragingly at them all, and lowered the Burin back to his desk.
The second piece of wood was for something more fun, but that was for later and once they had mustered the carving.... a bit. "You may begin now. If you have any question or need any help, please raise your hand and I will come over to your desk." His eyes just slightly landed on the youngest of his class. Maybe he should ask those ones to carve Isa?

It was a shame, really. Dylan had read about those desks and thought they might be an important piece of history at the school. He did wonder where they were now, though...
Anyway...Onwards with the task at hand!
Slipping his gloves into place, Dylan carefully picked the burin up as Professor Botros had indicated. It had some weight to it as he held it to further inspect the tool he'd be using...Hmm. He'd read about them but had never held one.
So, they could carve whatever rune they wanted to into the smaller piece of wood...and they had to do a chant whilst doing so. HA. TRIBAL!DYLAN GO. What rune did he want to carve, though...Dagaz. That one would be totally appropriate considering he was graduating soon.
Alright. To get started...

Dagaz. Yes, you with the slightly funny-looking pronunciation. Wade was eyeing it, along with the proper way of chanting it. So it was prounounced "Thaw-gauze" and not "Daw-gauze", the latter of which Wade would have assumed it was pronounced as. That wasn't too bad though, as he let his tongue run over the back of his front teeth to make the "th" sound. He would have to be careful and fight the temptation on making the usual "d" sound with it.
Now then, to begin. He brought the handle of the burin onto the wood piece he had, and slowly started the carving. Now to chant.
"Dagaz, dagaz, dagaz...dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh...d d d a a a g g g a a a z z z..." Wade's eyes glanced at the text to make sure he was doing it right before continuing, "du da di de do... dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh...odh edh idh adh udh...od ed ud ad ud...d d d a a a g g g a a a z z z." Hmm.. furrowing his brows as nothing glowed. He might have paused too much. He held the handle of the burin to try again.

Alice was still moping, 'cause she felt mopey for reasons and stuff. But staring at the Thurisaz carved into her block of wood, she started thinking about carving other runes. And.. hand up. Still quiet, but talking. "Professor, can you do bindrunes with a Burin? Or do those work better with the charm? Is there a way to, like, combine Galdr songs of two or more runes to make one with this tool? Or carve one over the other?"
Probably not, but she wanted to check to be sure.
And mope some more. She wanted to do that too.

The Slytherin took a few moments, allowing himself to center and focus on the task at hand. Carving...Chanting...Galdr song...He'd even closed his eyes, getting totally in the zone and allowing all else in his immediate vicinity to fall away...It was sorta like meditation for him...and something he did whenever there was a new task at hand. Dylan knew the importance of focus and concentration...
Breath.
Feeling ready...he opened his eyes and began speaking in a low voice. Yes, he did know most of the galdr songs off the top of his head...The Captain had been going hard at the NEWT study thing this term...and he hadn't taken any of the subjects lightly. Especially not Runes, considering Professor Botros was his favorite. Dylan would've felt like a total fail if he did fail his Runes NEWT.
"....dagaz....dagaz....dagaz....dh..dh..dh..dh..dh ..dh..dh..dh..dh.." His voice was steady and calm as the runic sounds left his lips. If he started dancing on the spot, it wouldn't be fault at all, though. He just felt the rhythm and stuff. "d..d..d..a..a..a..g..g..g..a..a..a..z..z..z.. "
As he got deeper into the song, the sounds began to get a smidgen louder...".....du da di de do......dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh....odh edh idh adh udh...." They had been a smidge drawn out before, but were now more clear and precise sounding. When chanting had begun, Dylan had started carving the first line...The construction of the Dagaz rune was interesting...and was made up of what would essentially be four lines he'd need to chant for. He was carving away, though...
"....od ed ud ad ud....d d d a a a g g g a a a z z z..."
Finishing the chant, Dylan had completed the first line straight down...and geared up to begin again...

While waiting for the professor answer her question, Alice decided to check in the textbook to see for herself if there was anything in there on Burins and bindrunes. She remembered how to make one with Intaglio, but if there was a way to do it manually with the tool, she wanted to know still. But there was nothing inside the book that she could find.
Sigh.
She fiddled around with the Burin a little and slumped more.

Okay.. Okay. Perhaps Wade should concentrate on the meaning to get the full effect of this whilst carving. Let's see.. Dagaz..Deals with a new beginnings....control... okay. He looked over the chanting, a few times, before returning to the piece of wood to continue the carving.. Now-
"Dagaz dagaz dagaz
dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh
d d d a a a g g g a a a z z z
du da di de do"
So far, so good, despite how slowly it took, Wade could see the rest of it in his head as he continued taking his time..
"dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh
odh edh idh adh udh
od ed ud ad ud
d d d a a a g g g a a a z z z"
Finishing it, Wade blinked a few times as he looked.. was that.. yes, he could see the slight glow from it. Awesome.
Zombie Apocalypse Team Leader ★ ★ in a crown of pepperoni and artisan cheese
Dylan wasted no time in beginning the second vertical line a few inches to the right...keeping the momentum going. With the chanting going on, it was astonishingly easy to carve into the wood...which always surprised him a bit.
Breeeeeeeeath.
"....dagaz....dagaz....dagaz....dh..dh..dh..dh ..dh ..dh..dh..dh..dh.." He started low again...the first bit was being dragged out some. Dylan felt it gave the whole galdr song character and the appropriate build-up. "d..d..d..a..a..a..g..g..g..a..a..a..z..z..z.. "
Moving into the next lines, he fought the urges to dance...He had a tool in his hand and a ton of movement would've been totally dangerous. He knew it. The urge was STRONG, however...".....du da di de do......dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh dh....odh edh idh adh udh...."Carving....
Once he neared the end, Dylan closed his eyes for a moment to really FEEL the POWAH. The RUNE POWAH..."....od ed ud ad ud....d d d a a a g g g a a a z z z..."
BAM-NESS. Second line DONE.
