The classroom was exactly the way it always had been; desks and chairs laid out in parallel rows, the small dais upon which the professor's big desk sat with a rememberall on it that's been obviously pushed to the side. The desks were freshly clean with a couple pieces of wood and a strange tool placed on top of each one of them. The professor would be standing at the door leaning slightly on his cane, waiting for the students to arrive and greeting them from the corridor. Once the students entered the classroom, they would find that the rectangular blackboard fixed to the wall over the dais had a message written on it:

Lex sat there blinking, she actually remembered something from the text and it was riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. She was now beaming and her shoulders might have raised a bit in anticipation of a pat. Cough. Cough. Hint. Hint.
No?
Okay, moving on anyway.
SIGH. She looked down at the tool, not having any idea what it was...'least not until they got that hint. "This is the tool you were telling me about when I asked that question, isn't it?" She rattled her brain for a minute, trying to remember the name. "The burin tool, I think?"
Yeah but don't ask her what it did. She had no idea and would have been fine enough with being allowed to sit here and poke people with it--they could even sword fight with them...no one would get hurt...in theory...maybe. Why? Did it matter?

No matter what, rune stuff continued to just sorta go over her head. Penelope kept her hand down for the first question, not really sure how to answer, and the others' answers and the professor's response only helped a little. She continued to take a few moments trying to process it all before she considered what was on their desks. Yeah, probably a thing for carving runes. Were they gonna carve runes on the wood blocks? Maybe. She didn't feel like repeating answers though since most of the others had already said that, so she kept her hand down and just listened.

Kace grinned sheepishly when the professor came over to flip his textbook to the right chapter. Awww man...this was kind of embarasssing. But the teacher didn't seem to care. He seemed glad to help. He was only a little firstie after all. He was allowed to mistakes. Plus his adorable charm always worked in his favor. He grinned when he thought of that.
He heard other students answers and he learned from them. He wrote some notes in his notebook about them. After he did a little scribble...scribble...scribble, he heard the Professor move on. He raised his head and then he questioned what type of tool it was. Kace gave it a quizzical look. It looked like something to carve pumpkins with? Yeah...it did!
"Professor that looks like a tool you could use to carve pumpkins with or something like that!" he squinted to see and moved around. He was in the middle row, it was hard to see over the taller students.

Dylan was taking notes...In fact, after diligently giving his own answer, he was jotting down all the others, too. It was his LAST Runes lesson. He would do all the things.
...And he'd read about these tools and had a serious question.
Pausing in his writing, he looked up at Professor Botros.
"Burins, yes. They're used to carve runes into surfaces like wood and stone." He looked over at Alec and nodded..."...and they are usually used with a galdr, carving with chanting, too...and those runes are sometimes stained with ochre..."
Now came the question...
"I know that desks were carved with this method...but are no longer here." He'd read books...and Hogwarts, a History. Ethan Truebridge had commissioned their creation. "Do you know where they are, sir?....Because I think they'd be highly invaluable...and really neat to sit in and look at..."

Yep, notes were being taken here too. And beaming was being done at the response to her anwser. Not to mention, she was really starting to think that, yes, she had been correct in guessing that they would be making jewelry. Especially with the emphasis on the words 'Inner Eye' like that. "They're burins, another tool that's used to carve runes."

Oakey quickly went down on his Notes and started write down everything that he could recall that was said. He lifted his head up for the next question a tad late as it seemed that everyone had given the answer to the question. Burin Tool. "Sometimes the Burin Tool is referred to as a Graver. I think it was it's old English name. Makes sense because it Engraves into Wood, and Metal and stuff"
That's all he really had to add to the subject at the moment. Oakey turned his head back down and then proceeded to start taking notes about the tool.
"There aren't horizontal strokes because if you carved with the grain you could split the wood, and what you carved would be a lot harder to read too, especially as the wood warps and shrinks and all."
As for the tool, "That's a burin, also known as a cold chisel." Nod.
Well at least someone was fully awake and answering all of the Professor's questions. "Correct, Mr. Odessa. You're all going to need that information in your Gandr making in case you get a fragile body for your runic wand." He eyed the rest of the class for a moment before nodding again at the second half of West's answer.

I bet it's named after some old guy, but I can't remember who it would be."
He looked even more at the tool, thinking about how much pressure it would require to carve with it and how long it would take. Asher loved working with his hands, so this was really exciting to him.
... "Minus the mushroom part. If you look closely, you'll find that it's quite inedible." Harmful, even, if not handled correctly.

Botros had nodded to the Captain, "Yes, true." But the boy had more on his mind, the carved desks? Ab took a moment, scratching lightly at his bald spot on the back of his head, while trying to remember encountering any invaluable carved desks. HMM. "I'm afraid I'm not familiar with those carved desks, Mr. Montmorency. Perhaps they were moved somewhere by the house-elves." Or disposed of? HMMM. They were not going to carve their desks, though, if that was what the Captain was hoping.

Pfft.
But when he asked the next question Ascanius did look down at the toll, which he had thought had been a doorknob when he first walked in. Upon further inspection it STILL looked like a doorknob to him. 'Course it couldn't have been that. So he looked a little closer.
Part of it looked like it was for carving even if the handle was weird. And by process of captain obvious because they were in Runes, he gathered it was a RUNE carver. Shocker.

Alec looked down at the tool on his desk and tilted his head. What was it called? And used for? He had no idea. And it certainly didn't help to know that Botros had mentioned it before this term. Had he mentioned a funny name at some point? Something that maybe sounded old and something Runes people would talk about excitedly?
Frowning slightly, he sat back and thought back to the previous lesson. They... had learnt... how to carve runes. Alec specifically remembered that bit because of the whole courage thing you needed when carving the runes. And then there was the part with the maze where they had heard creatures.
So... he was going to guess. Yep. "Erm... Professor?" he started, raising his hand in the air, "Can you use this tool as another way to carve runes? And you have to chant the Galdr of the rune as well?" You know, sort of like a wand substitute. Unless a wand was used to help this specific rune carving process too.
... He... really needed to study more Ancient Runes.

And the tool. Well... Kat wasn't paying attention much during the last lesson, sadly. She was usually scanning her textbook for an answer. And then... hey look. There is was. A burin. Whatever that is. Cold chisel. Some sort of tool for engraving. That made sense. The prefect raised her hand. "That's a burin, Professor." Yeah, like what West said. That dude knew everything. Like e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. "And it's used for engraving on wood and probably not just that." However it did look like a doorknob gone wrong.

That's all he really had to add to the subject at the moment. Oakey turned his head back down and then proceeded to start taking notes about the tool.
Botros clapped his hands twice. "Very good guesses, most of you got this right. This-" He turned around and grabbed the one on his desk. "-is called a Burin. It's a carving tool, used to carve runes onto wood. But to make them magical you're going to have to chant the galdr song for the rune you're carving." It was really simple to explain, but hard to apply considering the lack of carving skills of most kids, and the lack of patience too.
Ab took out his wand and levitated three boxes from under his desk that floated around the class, "Please take a pair of protective gloves, we are going to practice using these Burins. The tools we're using will not harm your skin but still try to be cautious when you hold them. I do not want to see anyone waving anything around." Eyes on the reckless loud Gryffindor Cambridge.
He waited for a moment for everyone to wear their gloves. "There are two pieces of wood on your desk. Take the smaller one and grab the Burin from its big handle." He demonstrated with his own Burin. "Then start carving any rune you desire onto that piece of wood." Easy as that. "Remember to chant the Galdr song affiliated with the chosen rune. And just like the spell we learned earlier this term, the rune will glow when you've done it right." He smiled encouragingly at them all, and lowered the Burin back to his desk.
The second piece of wood was for something more fun, but that was for later and once they had mustered the carving.... a bit. "You may begin now. If you have any question or need any help, please raise your hand and I will come over to your desk." His eyes just slightly landed on the youngest of his class. Maybe he should ask those ones to carve Isa?

You know that feeling you get when you think something the Professor said was possibly meant specifically for you? Lex was supposed to be having that but see, she was kinda distracted by the tool again. In her mind she was already seeing herself poking someone or sword fighting, neither of which involved waving them around so in theory it should have been fine, yes?
Not that she'd try arguing that. They were about to get to play with it!
Lex hopped out of her seat and got herself a pair of gloves. She slipped then on then skipped back to her seat, ready to get carving! First though...she needed to pick a rune. Something useful to her incase they got to keep them afterwards.
After that runes project, she'd come to learn that some had FAR better uses to her than others. MHM. Okay soooooo, he rune of choice would be....
She closed her eyes and ran her finger along the page of her textbook. When it stopped she looked to see what rune it was. Nauthiz. Shrug. She had no complaints. CARVING NOWWWWW.

Alright so the tool was not used for pumpkin carving. That was fine by him. His hopes weren't totally crushed. But at least he gave it a shot right? He then listened to the Professor and realized he moved onto the next activity. This seemed like fun from the sounds of it.
So he had to pick a rune...he flipped through his textbook and saw one that looked easy to carve. He picked....Sowilo! He read the meaning of it. It meant wholeness and success. He liked the sound of that! It even looked like a scar from the legend of Harry Potter his mother talked about.
Alright time to get the gloves so he could use the tool to carve....
He did his best to listen to all of the instructions, but there were a lot. Asher's hand ached from writing so quickly with his quill and he hoped it didn't hurt his carving abilities.
Wondering the best way to pick which rune he would carve, he figured just taking his finger and, with closed eyes, letting it land on one would work fine.
Here we go, he thought. He flipped open his book to the appropriate page and closed his eyes, letting his finger land on Thurisaz."Looks good to me."
Asher picked up his small block of wood and, making sure his gloves were on, picked up the burin.

This was going to be cool. Ella pulled on her gloves as she watched Professor Botros demonstrate how to handle the Burin. She understood why he wouldn't want anyone being careless with the thing, it looked like it could be dangerous in the wrong hands. Once the demonstration was over, she nodded in understanding and flipped open her textbook in search of a rune. She wanted to pick a good one to carve.
Hmmmm. Oh! Kenaz! The blonde saw aid in study and Wisdom and she was sold. OWLs were coming up soon and anything that could help with that was A-Okay in her book. Yup, Kenaz was the rune for her.
Pulling the smaller piece of wood towards her, the blonde eyed it curiously before picking up the Burin by the big handle, ready to begin.

Still quiet, Alice tugged her gloves on and stared intently as Professor Botros did a demonstration with the Burin. Patiently waiting until he was finished, she began trying to decide on a rune to carve. Uruz, of course, was her favorite, and the one she always used when in this class. But today, she wasn't quite feeling the strength rune. Just glum. And fidgety. And quiet. It didn't seem like a very Uruz-y day.
She felt more like.. Thurisaz. For some reason.
There, rune chosen.

There was probably actually nothing to this carving thing. Lex made the first dent in the wood and BEAMed. Progress, that's what this was!!! Now she just had to keep jabbing at this thing until she got the right shape for the one she chose. Lucky for her her finger landed on an easy one...though if it hadn't she might have just picked again.
Anyway, while she chiseled away at the wood she looked to the book for some idea of the chant. This was gonna be the easiest part of this all.
Ah, here we go!

"Jab. Jab. Jab. This almost reminded her of that creatures class where she was jabbing with the pitchfork!! THAT was fun...but this wasn't for the same kind of jabbing so...JabJabJabJab.
First line, consider yourself chiseled and she didn't even hurt anyone in the Process!!! Wasn't she just SUCH a careful Gryffindor, huh Professor?

Smaller block of wood in front of her, Alice grasped the Burin by its handle and began chiseling at it while she chanted. This time, the textbook was necessary, seeing as she'd never carved Thurisaz before and didn't have its chant memorized like she had the one for Uruz. "Thurisaz Thurisaz Thurisaz.. th th th th th th th th th.. thur thar thur ther thor... thu tha thu the tho.... th th th th th th th th th..."
Well. Was it working?
She kept working away at the wood and chanting while she did so. Still quietly.

After looking at her piece of wood and the line she'd made on it, she was beginning to think that all she needed was just another good jab to get it going just right. She went on muttering the chant in her concentration but found that it would take more than one jab at the wood, even though this line was meant to be considerably shorter.
Okay, she went on with her little vicious attack on the wood. Might as well yeah?
"naudhiz naudhiz naudhiz
n n n n n n n n n
nu na nu ne no
nudh nadh hudh nedh niodh
(nut nat nit net not)
un an in en on
n n n n n n n n n"
La de dah de dah--don't worry, that wasn't a part of the chant, all was good, she could separate the two. Humming and chanting...sorta...kinda. The point was the chanting was still happening and it was getting done!! In faaaact, look!!! The rune!!! She was done!!!! And it was GLOWING!!!!
"Look Professor! I did it! And I still have all my fingers!! So does that guy!" She said, pointing to her closest desk neighbour. Totally shoulder pat worthy.

"Thurisaz Thurisaz Thurisaz.. th th th th th th th th th.. thur thar thur ther thor... thu tha thu the tho.... th th th th th th th th th..." Alice tried her best to alternate her gaze from the textbook to the wooden block and back again. She felt rather bad for the wood.. it was so innocent, but all people had done to it was chop it from a tree and carve stuff into it, and poor wood.. was it as glum as she was? They had things in common, then, her and that wood.
.. what? Was she feeling empathetic toward a wooden block? She needed to snap out of it.
"Thurisaz Thurisaz Thurisaz.. th th th th th th th th th.. thur thar thur ther thor... thu tha thu the tho.... th th th th th th th th th..." Done? Glowing yet? Amazing. That mean she was done. And if it wasn't perfect, she wasn't going to try again like last class. Too much effort for her quiet self.
Sigh.

When in doubt, always copy West. Good rule to follow there. Anyway, it turned out that they weren't making jewelry. For now, anyway. Darn it. Maybe this was the practice before they made the jewelry? Yep, let's go with that. Because practice makes perfect.
Sky got some gloves from the box at the front of the room and sat back down in her seat, slipping the gloves on. Okay, now to choose a rune......
She started flipping through her textbook to the page where all the runes were listed and started looking.

She had gone silent because she didn't know much about what was going on. So she kept on listening and nodded also taking a couple of notes and all. Then it was activity time. Cassia got up and went to get gloves then put them on.
Now she had to choose a rune to carve. The fourth-year, reached for the textbook and started flipping through the pages and pausing on each page trying to figure what rune she was going to choose.
A small smile spread on her face as she recognized a bunch. Yeah, she didn't expect herself to be able to recognize much even after having used many in different assignments.
Her memory wasn't that good so she encouraged and commended her own self when it succeeded in remembering something.
NOW! Back to choosing a rune. Hmm...Hmmm..Maybe she'd go with the easiest one? Though none was that hard. Eeeeh. She hated decisions, instead she decided to see what others chose.

Okay, this seemed simple enough. Theo wasn't too excited about singing some old song, or whatever, though. He put on his gloves and gave the Burin a look over before touching it. They were allowed to touch it now, right? But first he needed to choose a rune.
And obviously, they all disappear from his head when he needed them.
He picked up his textbook to refresh his memory and tried to find one that he recognized. He settled with Wunjo because it was a pretty funky name. Okay, now time for the song thing... Ughhhhh... at least it was written down clearly in his text book.

Ooh yay. Carving time. Blue reached into her bag and pulled out her gloves. They were more than slightly dirty considering she hadn't washed them in what must have been a billion years. Eh. A scourgify later would get rid of those grimy ink stains.
She probably wouldn't get away with going for the super easy rune, would she? Ah well. She squinted at her textbook, trying to find one only slightly different from Isha. She didn't want to spend hours and hooours carving and then have a messed rune. It was much simpler just to go with the easy option. Laguz looked pretty good. Laguz it was!
Asher had no idea if it was actually doing anything or if he should keep going. Upon closer look, he notice it wasn't glowing yet. "Guess I should keep trying."
Looking over the instructions one last time, Asher saw he was supposed to be using the Burin, not just his wand.
Laura wasn't sure what she was supposed to do here and she couldn't decide on which two runes to use. "Professor I'm a bit stuck." Laura sighed, she was really confused about what to do. "I have no idea what to do now Professor." Laura really wanted to do something cool.
... Botros frowned. A real frown that's rarely seen on his kind face. "You have no idea what to do?" He repeated and looked at the other kids who were following his instructions without any complaints. "Maybe you should've paid more attention then, miss Hyde." Not happy with this Hufflepuff constantly getting 'stuck' in his classes about the simplest things but he still was going to help her, she could be... a special case. "What are you stuck with?" The tool was in front of her, so was the wood piece, and the textbook.

It was really simple to explain, but hard to apply considering the lack of carving skills of most kids, and the lack of patience too.
So it was a rune carving tool! Awesome! Alec tilted his head and started hastily scribbling down some notes. It... probably turned out messier than he intended it to be but... shrug. It'd have to do. At least he can read it, yeah? And even if he couldn't... then... good luck to him afterwards.
He put his quill down, grabbed a pair of gloves and strapped it on, wiggling his fingers as he did so. There. Now... he just needed to pick a rune, yeah? The Hufflepuff leaned over and started flipping through his textbook. Rune... rune... he needed to find a nice rune... Wunjo was not an option this time seeing as he always used that one. Although, he did secretly hope he'd get to use Wunjo in the OWLs. ... But... rune...

Okay, Ella was ready to do some serious chanting and carving. The blonde eyed her small piece of wood and focused on carving, knowing she wanted to make the symbol as accurately as possible. This was only made more challenging because she kept having to check back to make sure she was saying the chant right too.
Multitasking for the win? YUP.
"kenaz kenaz kenaz
ku ka ki ke ko
kun kan kin ken kon
ok ek ik ak uk
kaunnnnnnnnn"
And she carved as she chanted, doing her best to stay true to the words that were written in her textbook. Did this sound right to Professor Botros?
"kenaz kenaz kenaz
ku ka ki ke ko
kun kan kin ken kon
ok ek ik ak uk
kaunnnnnnnnn"
And carve, carve, carve....chant, chant, chant...
