The classroom was exactly the way it always had been; desks and chairs laid out in parallel rows, the small dais upon which the professor's big desk sat with a rememberall on it that's been obviously pushed to the side. The desks were freshly clean with a couple pieces of wood and a strange tool placed on top of each one of them. The professor would be standing at the door leaning slightly on his cane, waiting for the students to arrive and greeting them from the corridor. Once the students entered the classroom, they would find that the rectangular blackboard fixed to the wall over the dais had a message written on it:

It was like Botros was reading his mind. He was just about to poke the tool at his desk with his wand. He was a little bored. But not anymore. This was getting more interesting and awesome by the second.
"Is it true that early scripts had the same angular letter shapes suited for epigraphy?"
Though Nigel had to think from this question. They were going to be making runes in class today. Awesome.

Quiet Ella was quiet. She just wasn't feeling it today. She needed some ice cream and a nap and maybe a hug too. All those things would help. Seeing Botros helped a little too. The blonde really did enjoy the man. He was brilliant.
Runic Script?
Ella had read a bit about it while she was sleeping studying for OWLs in the library. She'd been there lots this term, the library, it was practically a second home to her now. Anyway...
"Runic script can be found on gravestones, Professor." Sad really, thinking about death. It had been on her mind lots though lately considering... things.
Aww. Botros couldn't help but grin at the little kid and wave back to him, "Hello, son. They're not toys, they're tools and they have a name." Which was what their lesson was about today.

"In our first lesson this term, we discussed the Runic alphabets, their development and usage as a whole group of letters. "Today we'll focus on Runic scripts a little more." Not on the alphabets they were written with. The actual scripts. "And please stop proding the tools on your desks. "Who can tell me what they know about Runic scripts? How are they written? Where can we find them? What did some say or mean?" Anything, really. Botros leaned forward on his cane and waited.
Oooooooh so they weren't toys. Woopsies. My bad on Kace's part. He smiled at the professor but he was glad he found Kace's mistake rather funny. I guess his adorable charm worked in his favor again. He grinned to himself. Then he heard the Professor move on with the lesson when the last student entered the classroom.
He reviewed what they learned last lesson. He copied it down in his notes for future reference. Then he asked a question. What were Runic scripts? Kace had NO idea. Maybe he could fish in his textbook for information. Yeah...he could do that.
He flipped through his pages and found something interesting. "Professor i know there are 3 kinds of runic scripts but the commonly used script called Elder Futhark is made of 24 symbols."
Runes, runes, runes. So much fun! Eliza was practically giddy as she sat at her desk, taking a lot of care to NOT touch the tool on her desk. She was happy to be in this class again and happy to be with her friends and Professor Botros. Actually though, she supposed she could just call Botros a friend too - lump them together like that, cause she enjoyed their chat they'd had.
Now, she tried to think of something different to say about runic scripts and NOT about the rune symbols themselves. She raised her hand to try, "Well, like it's been said, they can be carved onto any surface that's carvable really, like stone, wood, clay....but also I think they could be pressed onto things like a stamp or a mold or with a hot iron - like branding. All of those methods work well with runic scripts because of their straight, easy to create lines." She wished she knew more, but that was why she was here. To learn!

What did Sky know about runic scripts? "They can be carved onto pieces of wood or metal which are then used in jewelry." She had seen some one time when her family was on vacation. But her dad hadn't let her buy the necklace because he said that while the person selling was claiming that it was just a protection rune, it was actually something far darker. Plus, that she didn't need one anyway. Ooo, would they be making runic jewelry today? Because that would be cool....

Four questions were sent out to the class. Yeah, you wanna know how many of the answers Ascanius knew? Zero. That's how many. This class gave him an itch. Not his forte. Too temperamental, too much margin for change for him. Methodical. More of that, yeah?
Anyway, since he DIDN'T know he didn't answer. Kept his bored smirk on his face and began to tap a simple rhythm on his desk. Triplet, two, three, 4 and. Triplet, two, three, 4 and. Triplet, two, three, 4 and. Triplet, two, three, 4 and.
Nice BIG WIDE SMILE from Botros. AWESOME. Tobias GRINNED at the shoulder pat that he'd got. That was nice. Nice professor. YUP.
Looking up at Botros as he stood at the classroom, Tobias continued to smile. He was happy and that happiness was something he had been cultivating like all his life. Toby was a pro at not thinking about sad things.
Toby listened up as the man began to teach and quickly withdrew his hand from the tools he had prodded before when he told them to stop prodding them. OOPS. He gave a sheepish smile this time as he moved his hands from the desktop. There, temptation was pretty much gone now.
As for the question, Tobias had no idea. He couldn't actually remember much about runes even from the last class. There was one obvious thing, and so Toby raised his hand. "They... like, enhance magic?" The he glanced at the tools in front of him. "They used to be carved a whole bunch too, which is probably how they were able to last ages and ages and be found hundredsandhundredsandhundredsandhundredsandhundre ds of years later. I think. Maybe."
Well... at least he was participating.
And no longer prodding.

Hard lesson was hard.
And no matter how much he ever learned each year, it always disappeared by the next lesson. Ancient Runes just wasn't Theo's thing. He put up his hand, then paused thoughtfully. "Something about... an alphabet?" Yes, yes...

Alice was there, she just hadn't greeted Botros as usual. Or answered. Not late, just quiet. But after he asked a couple of questions and people had answered, her hand went up and she offered an answer. "In early Runic scripts, professor, they were written in a boustrophedon manner." It was variable , right? And that was all she was going to offer.
A smile too, for the professor, since she hadn't greeted her favorite. Hi, Mister Ab.

Oakey felt just a tad weird with Botros calling him son. He probably only did it because he's old and calls everyone son, but Oakey isn't called son. Not even by Harvey. "Runic Scripts can be found in the Scandinavian region, Mostly Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. These are North Germanic. Other Scripts can be found in Continental Europe, or South Germanic as the scripts are known as." This was getting to be a little more interesting then regular old Runes already.
Not really paying attention to the professor, Asher gazed at the tool. He wondered what he might use it for and wanted so badly to touch it. It looked like something he could carve into things with, which he really wanted to do. What boy doesn't like carving into things...like his desk.
Hearing other student answering a question, Asher looked up and decided to join in. Hearing the words alphabet and magic, he raised his hand "Magical alphabet carving?"

The snake sat elbows on the desk and hands supporting her chin as she listened to the man reviewing what they had learnt in the previous class. Good thing because she had forgotten. But she remembered the mazes pretty well. Not that she was much use for the snakes. Ancient runes wasn't her thing. Luckily other snakes were remarkably good.
Though she was making effort to become better. Writing a song and singing to that tree should count for something.
Runic scripts. Ehhh. She paused trying to think of what she knew about that. Reluctantly she raised her hand and spoke, "They're carved in some way for some reason, we can try looking for them in books....?" Her tone was a hint of a question though. She was curious to find out.

Well... uhm. Runic scripts. Yeah, they SORT OF learned that in their previous lesson. Kat could remember. And that carving spell and the whole maze thing with the charm bracelets. Shame... Kat wanted to keep her bracelet. For a few minutes, the prefect listened to the others share their answer. Because obviously Kat wasn't the smartest person when it came to Ancient Runes. She was still thinking... still buffering. Yep, give her a moment and she'll sort something out.
Now... yeah. She was going to raise her hand now. "These scripts include the Elder Futhark, the Younger Futhark and the Anglo-Saxon." Whether she was right or not, who cares. She was participating anyway. Maybe she should consider checking her TEXTBOOK even. Put it to good use, Hudson.

Awesomeeee. Awesomeawesomeawesome. West was eager for this lesson and immediately put his hand up.
What did he know about Runic scripts? That was an AWESOME question since it gave the freedom to say whatever he wanted and... well where did he even START? The most simple answers were often the best, and also the most relevant to the TOOL on their desks.
"All runic scripts are made up of straight lines, because they used to be carved and its a lot easier to carve a straight line in wood or stone than it is a curve unless you want to make a bunch of mistakes."
Any idea how hard it was to keep his answer just to that? West put his hand down.
"Very true. If you look at any runic script you'll distinguish the angular shape of its units-" or letters, if they may. "-Some say it's due to the carving style. It's easier to carve straight lines aligned at a certain angle when you have a stone or a piece of wood as parchment." Exactly as Odessa said but Botros repeated to let the others know this is an important fact. Keep it in mind. He gave the boy a smile, too.
"Likewise, there are no horizontal strokes in most runic scripts when they're carved on wood. Anyone can guess why?" Very easy, practical question. Coooooooome oooooon.

Meh. Details. She didn't really care too much about it. She figured they'd be just talking about carvings in stone.
"Rocks, stones, metal. Yes, very good. You can find runic scripts pretty much everywhere that used Runes, is what you're saying." And they talked about that in earlier class, too. So not going into details into this point.

"Professor, I've read somewhere they were used for healing back in the day...in rituals and things of that nature. Priestesses could read from them and work the rune's combined magic. I've also seen some etched in a vertical format, too..."...or had he been mistaken on that front? Dylan was almost positive he hadn't been...
Aha! Botros nodded, a bit exaggeratedly when the Captain mentioned the vertical format. "Yes, correct. Although this isn't universal, the early form of the Latin alphabet used for the Duenos inscription showed some horizontal strokes. But this brings us back to my question earlier." WHY did they opt to avoid horizontal strokes when they carved on woody sticks, for example? Hmm. Hehe.

OHHHHHHH. Heh. She was gonna pretend she knew that was there the whole time. Yup. So on to the question. Alexa raised her hand while her brain tried to come up with an answer.
"Some of them were written on things like bones and some were chiseled into clay blocks...or something like that...I think..." Really, how was she meant to remember what was written in a textbook? Merlin knew she hardly ever read that thing--except the odd occasion where she would need an answer.
Kinda like now...
She probably should have looked into the text. Ah well, it was too late for that now.
Her apology was met with a small smile and a nod. Politeness and respect were the eraser for all the mistakes for this particular man.
As for her answer, hmm. "Bones. You mean the fangs and creature bones used for superstitious or ritual purposes. Yes, that is correct. Although finding an original runic script carved into one of those is extremely difficult." It was hard locating the original ones on boulders and in caves, let alone creature remnants.

Another quiet one. Also, did you notice that it was the CAPTAINS that are quiet today? Botrod noticed, and he looked back at Bishop and Montmorency before nodding at Fischer. "Yes, miss Fischer. Some used the manner right-to-left in a runic script. Others wrote it from left-to-right. And then one more option was to alternately use those both manners." Pause. He was still eyeing the captains. "This isn't a rule, though. When you read about the runic inscriptions found in Scandanavian lands, for example, you'll find that there are vertical lines wrote from bottom to top and vice versa." Was it a coincidence that the Captains were quiet?

Well West knew right? He stuck his hand up.
"There aren't horizontal strokes because if you carved with the grain you could split the wood, and what you carved would be a lot harder to read too, especially as the wood warps and shrinks and all."
As for the tool, "That's a burin, also known as a cold chisel." Nod.

Ella thought back to the first lesson and tapped her chin. What had they done during that lesson again? Oh...they'd carved runes! So if that weird looking tool had to do with that then, "It's a carving tool, Professor." She was sure of it. Did that mean they'd get to carve using this today? That was pretty neat, actually.

What the tool is called and what it's used for?
Alec looked down at the tool on his desk and tilted his head. What was it called? And used for? He had no idea. And it certainly didn't help to know that Botros had mentioned it before this term. Had he mentioned a funny name at some point? Something that maybe sounded old and something Runes people would talk about excitedly?
Frowning slightly, he sat back and thought back to the previous lesson. They... had learnt... how to carve runes. Alec specifically remembered that bit because of the whole courage thing you needed when carving the runes. And then there was the part with the maze where they had heard creatures.
So... he was going to guess. Yep. "Erm... Professor?" he started, raising his hand in the air, "Can you use this tool as another way to carve runes? And you have to chant the Galdr of the rune as well?" You know, sort of like a wand substitute. Unless a wand was used to help this specific rune carving process too.
... He... really needed to study more Ancient Runes.

Yes, Kat was taking notes too. Brief notes. She wasn't copying the novel-length responses and answers her schoolmates were saying. She didn't have enough energy to write ALL of that. Maybe a Quick Quotes Quill would make her work in this easier but she didn't have one right now. She's never used one before, that is. Maybe she should give it a try soon? Just for the experience part of her life. Might be interesting even. You'll never know unless you try.
And the tool. Well... Kat wasn't paying attention much during the last lesson, sadly. She was usually scanning her textbook for an answer. That's what she ALWAYS does, unless she knew the answer by heart. This time was no exception. Kat still used her textbook because she didn't bother using her brain cells in this class. Lazy, sort of. And then... hey look. There is was. A burin. Whatever that is. Cold chisel. Some sort of tool for engraving. That made sense. The prefect raised her hand. "That's a burin, Professor." Yeah, like what West said. That dude knew everything. Like e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. "And it's used for engraving on wood and probably not just that." However it did look like a doorknob gone wrong.

This was going to be a listening lesson, more than a speaking one and for one main reason. Ness didn't know too much about Runes and that was because she didn't like it and therefore didn't attempt to remember much of it. It would probably affect her badly now that she was a seventh year though.
After the Professor and everyone else had gone on about what Runes were Ness made sure to store it all in her brain this time, and even scribbled a few things on her parchment but she paused when the old man mentioned the tool. It looked interesting and hazarding a guess as to what it was didn't sound bad. Therefore her hand was raised. "Professor, it looks like some sort of carver, or chisel or something." Actually looked a bit like a smoke pipe, but that was just the shape and nothing else.

Indeed. Theo KNEW his answer was correct.
As for the next question... well... he looked at the object in front of him all over, without touching it of course. It looked like some sort of chizel. And then it just clicked in his head. Theo raised his hand confidently. "I don't know what it's called, but is it a chizel that's used to carve runes?" GOLDEN ANSWERS from Theodore today.

He inspected the tool again. It looked like a mushroom with a screwdriver attached to the stem. Asher figured it was for carving runes into things, such as wood, but had no idea what it would be called. "Maybe a mushroom rune carverer? I bet it's named after some old guy, but I can't remember who it would be."
He looked even more at the tool, thinking about how much pressure it would require to carve with it and how long it would take. Asher loved working with his hands, so this was really exciting to him.
Could the Professor NOT stare at him? He had things he was trying to accomplish, like keeping this rhythm in an even four/four, and he couldn't very well accomplish that with him GAWKING at him. Old man, eyes go around the room. Not at HIS handsome face. Yeah?
Pfft.
But when he asked the next question Ascanius did look down at the toll, which he had thought had been a doorknob when he first walked in. Upon further inspection it STILL looked like a doorknob to him. 'Course it couldn't have been that. So he looked a little closer.
Part of it looked like it was for carving even if the handle was weird. And by process of captain obvious because they were in Runes, he gathered it was a RUNE carver. Shocker.
Hmm, maybe he'd just do triplets in 6/8 now. Cool.
Ooh since he'd brought up the tool they were allowed play with it now, yes? It was extremely hard for this fourth year not to just start hammering her desk away with it. She lifted it up and sat it down with the mushroom-head thing on the table and twiiirled it like a spinning topper. 'Twas obliviously what everyone was saying it was, unless they were just a class full of idiots, which couldn't be true. There was really no need for her to add with the same points as everyone so instead she just gave Botros her cool-guy upwards nod instead.
TOBY WAS TOTALLY MAKING NOTES. They were kinda scribbly and doodly but he was making notes for sure and being, like, a perfect student.
At the question, Tobias looked at the tool but still totally didn't prod it. The clue Botros gave them didn't really help, because in the last lesson Tobias was so totally zoned out like constantly SO it would have to be a guess.
"It's a pointy carve-y thing... for... carving runes? And probably other stuff. But the runes bit seems more like the answer you'd want."
Logic. Toby was good at that.
Sometimes.
