They believe using these runes can still bring some benefit to them, that the original meanings of the runes still hold power." She paused. "They are especially interesting to some of us in the modern day because the letters in our own alphabet have no individual meaning like they used to." And that was kind of sad, to be a culture with a hollow language. That's sort of how she viewed it. At the moment anyway. |
Kace was learning so much in this class. He copied down all the notes the professor had on the board. Then he realized his hand was cramping, so he stopped and moved his wrists around to make sure he could not get carpal tunnel. After he finished his notes, he heard the professor ask the question. What were runes used for? He flipped through his textbook and scanned it till he came to an answer. He raised his hand and pipped up, "Professor i know runes were used for basic form of communication. Runes were also used for writing, to help people understand symbols and other things." Yeah that is what he could come up with so far. He was having difficulty finding how runes were used today. |
SPOILER!!: Decoration Botros raised his eyebrows gladly and nodded at the two, "Oh yes, decoration is one of the recent uses of runes. In the Swedish province, that we spoke of earlier, they continued using the symbols of runes on furniture, boxes, buildings, kitchen blocks, bowls, etc." Quote:

Carving them on wooden beads, chains of magicked jewelries, or tattoos. This also is due to their valuable individuality, each rune holds a power, an energy which can be evoked and used to our favor. Such as, protection, enlightenment, healing." They all were right, yes. SPOILER!!: Communication "Aha! Bravo! The earliest use of runes, which form the runic alphabets, is communication. It is a language after all, like Ms. Dawnsel and have explained. Communicating with the people at the time, like Mr. Barrington have given an example of the law codex, and then -perhaps unintentionally- communicating with their descendants, like Mr. Summers have suggested." SPOILER!!: Divinatory purposes Ooooh, Botros was excited to explain this one! He cane!walked to the blackboard and with a big smile started, "Very good, yes. But beware and do not make the mistake that everyone seems to fall in. Divination, as in consulting the runes about a decision, a situation that we're facing some time during our life path. Divinatory purposes does not predict future events like other Divination means." Pause. "There are some runic methods that offer enlightenment and guidance for our future, however, that is not the same thing as prediction." Professor Elwood could go into details about this. This was one of the reasons why preferred teaching younger kids than those at universities who seemed to always wear an uptight attitude in class. Quote:

post 1 SPOILER!!: Previous answer Eh? share them with someone? Must be the budget thing... Daichi was sure of it. He watched how the gloves and goggles floated around the classroom and grabbed the pair of them. He then began to listen to the old man's instruction on how to carve the Rune and thought that his muttering were a liiiiiittle over dramatic. Buuuut, maybe that was just him? Daichi was genuinely happy that they were not going to do the Galdr Chants this time. He disliked them and eventhough all the students would be chanting he could not help but feel utterly embarrassed by it. Whoever invented that was just weird... Before he would start the activity, the Slytherin decided to sit back in his chair first and practise the incantation. It sounded vaguely familiar but maybe that was because he had read a few pages of textbooks so maybe that was why. His brown eyes went to the blackboard and read the incantation of the spell. So it was Intaglio followed by the name of the Rune he would use, right? Sounded easy. "Inta...Intaglio" he whispered , eyes fixed to the board. "Intaglio, intaglio...intaglio" he repeated the word over and over until he *knew* it. "Intaglio!" he said a little louder and then stopped. |

She knew stuff about them, yes, but they probably bore her. It was a good thing that this activity had something to do with spells and her wand. It made things better and it lessened the chance of Kat falling asleep in class. The prefect listened to the professor as he explained and did some stuff with his blank wood piece. ... COOOOOL. So since he allowed them to do things and carve on their desks now, Kat reread the words on the board and nodded to herself. Right, she was going to practice the incantation first. Yep, with no wand. "Intaglio... Intaglio... Intaglio..." It was sort of easy. "In-tag-lee-oh..." That was the correct way to say it right? Yeah yeah. |
Post 1 Oh, see, more stuff she'd need to scribble down and she scribbled down the spell too. Now the Professor could have her undivided attention as he told them how they were going to be cutting things! Cutting...carving...same thing really, the point was there would be wand use instead of boring theory. Now she was a little less disappointed about the absence of the grandrs. Once the equipment started floating around she reached for a pair of gloves and goggles. These were necessary, yeah? Don't get her wrong, sharing would happen, it just wouldn't happen until after she was done, geddit??? After slipping them on she unholstered her wand and thought to practise the incantation for a bit before actually carving away at stuff...just in case... What was it again...? She glanced down at her notes because looking pass people just to see the board would have been more effort. Ah, here we go, Intaglio. "Intaglio...in-taag-lio...int-ag-lioooo....intaglio..." |
Post 1 Tag would simply start off by practicing on how to say the spell and the actual rune. They were, after all, not every day words and he did not want to mess this up right away. So, first he started his practice on the spell. "InTAGlio." Ok. That first practice was just for laughs. He heard the professor specifically not pronouncing the spell like that. Its just, Tag's name was in it, he had to do it. Well, now that that was out of his system he continued with practicing the incantation. "Intaglio...In-tag-lio...Intaglio. Intag-lio? Intaglio?" The last one sounded the best. Now he had to practice the actual rune? Looking through his textbook Tag found the page and glanced through the runes. At long last he finally chose one, looked at the word for a few seconds and began "Jeez... Ok.. Ehiwaz..No. Eihwaz. Ehwas? Ehwaz? Eihwaz? Eihwaz?" Was that it? This rune was rather difficult to say. |
Post 1 She was pretty pleased that Professor Botros had gotten her name right, twice. After all, she'd chatted with him a little bit now, so if he still didn't remember it she probably would feel a little sad - because that would mean she wasn't memorable. But since that was not the case, she was in a good mood. And she was excited to finally know how to carve the runes with their magical properties intact. Learning last year for decoration had been good practice, but this - this - was where it was really at. Thinking of runes that would be useful to her, her mind automatically went to something for courage or speed to help her with Quidditch. Then, of course, she wanted to have quicker wit and a sharper tongue, so she made a mental note about that wish as well. And she also wanted to be more creative. She drew a lot now, but she knew she could always get better with more practice, and if she had a rune to boot, who knew how well her sketches might turn out? She hoped she'd have enough time to practice carving them all, but if not she'd have it in her notes to try later. SPOILER!!: Notes She opened her textbook to the Elder Futhark page and began perusing the runes. She still didn't have them all memorized, but she was working on it. Tracing the page with her finger, she stopped on her first desired attribute: Uruz. She concentrated on the rune and how it was said to help with strength, vitality, releasing or taming power, clearing obstacles, and that it was good for hunting - which she thought was a lot like Quidditch. In-tag-lio, in-tag-lio. Intaglio, Intaglio...Uruz, uruz, uruz, uruz.... She felt fairly ready to try, so put on a pair of goggles and gloves, though she wasn't sure why they'd need them, and aimed her beech wand at the wood on the desk and said the incantation. "Intaglio Uruz, Uruz, Uruz, Uruz, Uruz..." She watched the wood on the desk dent into the shape of the rune slightly, but it wasn't enough. It's just your first try though, so no big deal. Just try again, right? She aimed her wand again and concentrated. |
Post 1 Alrighty then, now the good stuff was happening. After Wade jotted down what was on the board in his notebook, he then flipped backward a few pages through his past scribbled notes to see what good rune he could try. Ah.. Laguz. Laguz dealt with water and lake, as did Wade's name in Scandinvian mythology. Yep, Laguz it was. Now, Wade better practice the incantation, mouthing it silently, In-tah-glee-oh.. In-tah-glio.. Intah-glio.. Intaglio.. Until it rolled off his tongue perfectly. |
Post 2 Okay, yeah, chanting the incantation, fun, whooo--ONTO THE CARVING!!! Waaaait. No. She still needed to pick a rune. Bah! All these details, how was anyone meant to get to cutting away at wood?? Merlin! Lex grabbed her textbook from the corner of her desk and began sifting through runes. She didn't want just any rune. Nope. She wanted a real prettiful one, this meant careful selection. Raidho...? No. Ansuz...? No. Ooo, algiz looked kinda neat. That one, she'd carve that one!!! Heeeey, she could start the casting and chanting and fuuuuun carving!!! Eeeeep!!!! She was almost bouncing!! "Intaglio algiz algiz algiz..." Every now and then she looked back at the book to make sure the she was getting it right. "Intaglio algiz..." |
post 2 Having practised the incantation enough times, Daichi grabbed the goggles and put them on. It reminded him of the ones in the astronomy lab and he vaguely wondered if they were the same. Not putting the gloves on just for now, the Slytherin flipped through the pages of the textbook in search of a good Rune. His eyes fell on Kenaz , a rune that would help him with study and give him inspiration. It was also the same Rune that Eliza had given him before. He HAD seen the fire part but it wouldn't ACTUALLY set fire right? It was just the *word* that it meaned candle... Putting on his gloves, he then grabbed his wand and pointed it at his desk. Before saying anything, he quickly looked up to the blackboard to read the incantation before looking down. Concentrating with all his might he said; "Intaglio Kenaz...Kenaz...Kenaz..." he watch the spell cutting in to the desk and slowly making the shape of the rune in it. He concentrated some more on the image of the rune "Kenaz" and then the spell stopped. Hmm...this was definitely harder than it looked and maybe the Professor hadn't been over-dramatic? |
Post 3- question as well ^^ "Intaglio algiz...algiz algiz..." The last of the carving away was done and she was able to beam down at her work. She did it!! Loooooook!!!!!!! The Algiz rune, just like in the book!! The edges weren't even all that jagged but that didn't change the fact that they weren't smooth. Lex took another look at her work of art before shooting her hand up in the air. "Professor, as perfect as my rune looks now," yeah, perfect, because she made it, DUH, "It's not all that much as smooth as I'd like, is there a spell I could use to make the edges and sides smoother or...I dunno...a tool? I promise I won't hurt myself." You know, if it was a tool. She could handle machinery and the like, no problem. It just wouldn't be advised that anyone sit with her while she made the attempt. Once she got it nice and smooth then she would hand over her gloves and goggles, but not before. Nope. |

Post 1 Notes. Ella was scribbled down lots of them which was all well and good considering it was her OWL year. The more notes the better, yeah? Yeah. She was also really excited because it looked like they'd be moving on to the practical portion of the lesson. This was the really exciting part. The Rune Carving spell. Ohhhhh. They'd used this in the past, hadn't they? Ella thought it sounded familiar, maybe from her third year or something. In any case, she decided it'd be good to practice it a few times like Professor Botros suggested. It never hurt to practice. "Intaglio....Intaglio... Intaglio..." And of course she'd mention the name of the rune she was carving when she did this for real. Speaking of runes, she should probably pick one that she wanted to carve. This was where the text book would come in handy. Scanning the text, the blonde bit her lip and searched for a rune that would be good to carve. Hmmm......Jera. She was definitely going to go with Jera today. This was a rune having to do with success and happiness and peace, right? All good things as far as Ella was concerned. This seemed like the perfect rune for her. |
post 3 The goggles over his eyes really weren't comfortable. He took them off for a moment and checked the strap on the back and loosened it a bit before trying it on again. Much better~ And no, his head was NOT big! Pointing his wand somewhere else on the desk, the Slytherin concentrated on the Kenaz Rune. "Intaglio Kenaz...Kenaz...Kenaz.." he muttered the incantation as he watched the light hit his desk and began to carve in the rune. "Kenaz..Kenaz..." he continued as he focused and he frowned while doing so. "Kenaz..." Slowly , but this time assuringly, the wood on the desk was getting the Kenaz rune carved in to it and after a few moments he was done. Pleased with his work, he ended the spell and then took off his goggles and gloves. |
post 1 Laura was really worried about doing this spell but she would give it her best shot, she knew she had promised the Professor she would. "Sir, can we make it so the runes spell out a word?" Laura thought it would be cool if they could but if not she would live with it. Laura decided that the first thing she would do was practice the spell, she knew it was important not to get the spell wrong and this being her owl year she took loads of notes and made sure everything was perfect. "Intaglio" Laura said clearly. "Intaglio." Laura was enjoying herself now if she knew it was this fun earlier she would have started paying attention in class ages ago. |
Post 2 Now that she'd picked a rune and practiced, Ella waited patiently for her turn with some goggles and a pair of gloves. Safety equipment was really important, yeah? Yeah. Especially when carving. She didn't want to lose any fingers or anything. It'd be much harder to be a keeper without those. BEAM! Her turn. Ella placed the goggles and gloves she'd been handed on and picked up her wand, eyeing the wood carefully. Time to carve a rune. Concentration was important during this sort of thing, yes? And being clear in your intentions and yeah, the incantation too. "Intaglio Jera Jera Jera Jera...." Woah! It was there. The rune was there! Carved right into her wood! The only thing was, it wasn't exactly perfect. The wand had seemed to waver a bit during the carving and it was evident in how the lines of the runes had formed but still, it was a nice first try. She really wanted to try again, though. |

Post 3 Adjusting her goggles a bit, Ella eyed the wood again and reached for her wand. She'd make a better rune this time, she was sure of it. Besides, she was determined. That had to count for something. With her wand pointed, she said, "Intaglio Jera Jera Jera Jera Jera...." She bit her lip as she worked, hoping that this time her work would be neater. When the last of the rune was carved, Ella pulled her wand away and smiled faintly. This time the rune looked much smoother. That was an improvement over last time, yeah? Yeah. It was slightly larger this time too which was interesting. And the faint beating glow thing it was doing right now? How cool was that? Could she make more? Were they going to do something different next? Could she take this with her? Questions, Ella had lots of them. Oh and she had goggles and gloves which she could pass on too. The blonde held them up and eyed her classmates closest to her. They were up for grabs. |
Post 2 Ok. Now that Tag had practiced the incantation and the actual rune he could get to the actual dirty work. He looked down at his extra piece of wood and imagined the incantation and the spell. This shouldn't be too hard, correct? He moved his wand very slowly across the board as he said "Intaglio Eihwaz. Intaglio Eihwaz. Intaglio Eihwaz!" Ah, there was the rune carved neatly into the wood. BEAM! Tag actually accomplished something in class. Now he would have to do this a few more times and he'd be good for the practice section of the class, correct? At least he was heading in the right direction. |
Post 2 Eliza breathed in a deep, deep breath of air and released it slowly through her nose. It was something she'd heard helped with meditation and since she needed to really focus on the purpose of the rune, she thought it might help. After breathing like this for several moments, she slowly and calmly aimed her wand at the desk again. Uruz...strength...Uruz...overcoming obstacles...Uruz...courage....Uruz....little slanty house looking shape....Uruz...power....Uruz....survival....Uruz. ... Having it all laid out clearly in her head, she softly spoke the words and cast the spell. "Intaglio Uruz, Uruz, Uruz, Uruz, Uruz..." And another deep breath inwards. "Uruz, Uruz, Uruz, Uruz..." she said, breathing the words slowly and evenly outwards. "Uruz....Uruz....Uruz...." She slowly looked down at the desk to see if it had worked this time and she saw, on the new spot where she'd aimed, a distinct and precise cut of the symbol Uruz. There was probably a better description for what it was, but to her the shape looked like a slanted house or two pillars with another slab connecting them at the top. Sort of like the symbol for Pi as well. But no matter what it looked like to anyone else, it was there on her desk, glowing softly. I did it! she thought excitedly, at first, but then still wanting to keep her focus, she dialed down her response so that she could try another rune. |
Post 2 Wade waited patiently until his desk partner had their turn with the equipment. Whilst doing so, he looked down at the rune for Laguz. Okay, that shouldn't be too tough. If anything to Wade, it resembled a hook and had no curves thankfully. Carving curves on wood would be an interesting challenge.. Anyways, he stopped as soon as he felt a tap on his shoulder. Cool, it was his turn now. Donning on the goggles, then gloves. Right. Wade had the rune shape in his head already. Now just like every new spell this needed total concentration. He aimed his wand at the blank wood piece, before speaking clearly, "Intaglio Laguz.. Laguz..Laguz..Laguz.." He could feel a slight warmth through his hands as it was being carved before... it stopped. Hm? Wade had been attempting a straight vertical line from the bottom, and it reached only halfway. Hmph. Well, better keep going. Wade lowered his goggles down over his eyes again. Time to concentrate more.. |
Post 3 Ok, a few more minutes of Tag practicing this. He spoke the incantation quietly beneath his breath and then so on with the actual rune. Now that he had re-practiced the words once again Tag got down to business to defeat this activity. "Intaglio Eihwaz! Intaglio Eihwaz. Intaglio Eihwaz" Tag said as he smoothly moved his wand over the board. An, once again, the rune began to shape itself into the wood and wah-lah, there it showed up. Was this going to be most of the class today? If so, this was not too difficult. But, there must be some catch to all of this. |
Post 3 Her second rune she wanted to try was Ansuz, she'd decided after checking for something to help her with her communication and knowledge. She was often at a loss for words when talking with people, whether because she was having a shy moment or because she didn't want to say the wrong thing, so she felt this rune may help her out a bit. She visualized the rune in her mind over and over. A slanted F. Ansuz....intelligence....Ansuz....communication... Ansuz...language, poetry...Ansuz...music, speech....Ansuz. She continued her steady, slow breathing. In through the mouth, out through the nose. "Intaglio Ansuz, Ansuz, Ansuz, Ansuz...Ansuz...Ansuz..." She cast the spell to a fresh spot on the desk, still breathing relaxed and controlled breaths, still thinking about the rune. "Ansuz....Ansuz....Ansuz..." Language...the slanted f....communication...Ansuz... "Ansuz...Ansuz...Ansuz..." She carried on, watching the desk patiently, not expectantly. Finally, after about two minutes of chanting and visualizing, the rune appeared. Right next to her Uruz rune. Strength and communication. Sounded pretty good to her. It had taken quite a bit of time, but she knew she'd be faster with practice and age. Her ears perked at the sound of another rune she recognized, Kenaz, and realized it was Daichi chanting its name. She smiled to herself, glad that he still liked the rune she'd picked for him last year, and hoped it would be truly helpful to him now that it had its magic along with it too. |
