Hecate sat on the corner of her desk with her legs crossed. This was insane... but... whatever.
She would do it...
The door to the classroom was unlocked... kids just needed to begin filing in.
ooc: This class will stay open for at least 72 hours (probably more.) Also thanks to Nixy! and AuroraQuinn for taking the picture of the Potions Classroom for me, and to Anna Banana for making it into a pretty graphic!

It felt like an age before everyone was back. It was weird, and the dung he'd collected was kind of starting to smell. Maybe that had been a bad idea. Yeah. It was. He pushed it to the front of his bench, not too close that it would fall off the bench, but far enough away that hopefully it wouldn't smell so much. Ahh. Finally everyone was back though. Oh. That had to actually tell everyone what the ingredients would do. Oh erm... He knew most of what everything did. Apart from the dung. Did the dung actually do anything? He would have to think about that was he wrote everything else. Pulling his parchment closer, he began writing it quickly, whilst he listened to the rest of the class.
Quote:
Nettles - Fresh Nettles can be used within boil-cute potions, and dried nettles can be used within herbicide potions. Nettles can also be presumed to be the main ingredient in drinks like nettle tea Kelp - Kelp can be used within fertiliser potions. Salt Water - Water is generally a base for most potions. Salt Water in particular can be a ingredient in a curative solution to treat scale rot in dragons, which...could be brewed as a potion? Unicorn Dung - Other animals dung can be used within potions. So...unicorn dung may hold the same qualities? Maybe.
He wasn't really too sure about the unicorn dung, but his other ingredients were okay. He thought. Nodding at his answers, he read them out when it was his turn.

That was a good question... Theo stared at the professor, then looked at his ingredients. Hummm... He would start with the easiest one first, the glass of water. The Slytherin raised his hand, and taking brief notes as he went along, because he probably would forget. "I have a glass of water, because it is used in pretty much all the potions. Err, you can use a spider for..." He paused, and dabbed his quill up and down on his parchment. "I think you can use the spider legs for something." He wrote that down, even if it was brief.
The next one, he knew something about. "I know that nettles can be used in the Cure for Boils." Theo had looked that up one time because he had thought about giving Alice boils one day, but chickened out in case he got caught. The cure potion looked way too hard. And the last of his ingredients, daisy roots. He was sure that they had used them before.
But what was it for?!
OOH.
"Shrinking solution! We used daisy roots in that potion once, I think." He said, writing that down, too. Once he was done, Theo rested his quill neatly next to his parchment and smiled up at professor Lafay.
Quote:
Water: Is used in all potions
Spiders: Legs can be used for something
Nettles: Cure for Boils
Daisy roots: Shrinking solution

Sonea opened her textbook immediately when she knew that she needed to learn more about the ingredients she had found and searched first for the Lavender she had found. While Sonea looked inside her book she saw a lot ingredients she could have used instead of the Lavender she had found. But she was satisfied with what she had, the next time she could find more ingredients. When Sonea had found the description from the Lavender she wrote it down on her parchment.
Next Sonea started to search for her Motherwort, this was also a flower she had found in the student garden and she had no trouble with finding it in her textbook, she searched in the index for the plant and found the page number where the information about the plant was written on. The young girl read about the plant and realized that this was the second plant she had picked who could be used for medication or healing. Quick Sonea wrote also the information over this plant on her parchment and took her third ingredient in her hand.
She found a lot information about the Nightshade in her book and she saw that it was not just a normal Nightshade she had with her, it was a Deadly Nightshade, she saw that it also was named Belladonna? Sonea wondered why the plant was called “Deadly” and quickly read in her book for more information, but she saw nothing what explained the “deadly” part inside the name.
Her next and last ingredient was one of the most prettiest she had with her, she had searched long before she had found the Jobberknoll feather and now she was really curious what she could make from it in a potion.
When Sonea had done everything she needed to do she looked around her and watched what the others were doing.
SPOILER!!: Notes
Quote:
Lavender:
Lavenders are sometimes put in medicine and are sometimes used to prevent infections.
A lavender is a flower noted for its "beautiful color" and "calming fragrance." It can be used as an ingredient in a variety of potions
Motherwort:
Motherwort is a herbacious perennial plant of the mint family.]
Motherwort has healing properties, and is used in wizarding remedies; dried plantain leaves are used in the treatment of mad dog bites.
Nightshade:
The plant can be used to treat the symptoms of Parkinson's disease, reducing tremors and rigidity whilst improving speech and mobility. It has also been used as an antidote in cases of mushroom or toadstool poisoning.
Jobberknoll feather:
The Jobberknoll is a small, blue speckled bird that never makes any noise until the moment before it dies. It then lets out a long scream, which consists of every sound it ever heard backwards. Jobberknoll feathers are used in Truth Serums and Memory Potions.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
When it was finally time to continue the lesson, Daichi listened carefully to the professor's words. He didn't want to miss anything and risk exploding something. Knowing what to do , Daichi quickly grabbed a piece of parchment and a quill out of his school bag and looked at his ingredients in the vials.

He placed down his quill and looked around, wondering what the others had as ingredients.
Nigel listened as the professor told them what to to next. He then took out a piece of parchment, a quill, and did what he was told
Quote:
Knotgrass: ingredient of the Polyjuice Potion and in the brewing of Knotgrass Mead. Water: preferred form is standard potioning water. Used in mostly all potions. Special Lethe Water used in memory loss potions. Leech: used make the Polyjuice Potion Daisy: roots are an ingredient used in the Shrinking Solution and Essence of Daisyroot.
Nigel thought he took a lilly and some grass. But apparently he got lucky and picked a daisy and knotgrass by accident.

Forrest gulped hard as he finally registered the full meaning of professor's instructions, and sank further in his seat in an attempt to hide back behind the tall over in front of him. He was so flushed with embarrassment that his face's colour matched Gryffindor's red. But of course! He was an idiot--the biggest idiot on earth! Of course they would brew potions with these! He slapped his forehead harshly that it echoed in the dungeon and tried not to make eye-contact with the lady. Panic had started to rise in him, and even if his ingredients were of any good, he was too dumbstruck to find it in the book.
So, sittting as lowly as he could, he just tried not to panic and hide behind the tall people in front.
"Alright. The way a potioneer creates a potion, if they look for ingredients that have the properties to bring out in the potion, and then they tweak the amounts to achieve the desired effect. This can be very hard. What I want you all to do now, if take those 4 ingredients, and tell me what properties they have..."
Annabeth immediately began flipping through the book’s page to find the information the teacher had asked to. She knew it would be her tiniest problem finding the potions where those ingredients were useful. She thought perhaps she could say simply that those ingredients couldn't be useful the way they were, the teacher would comprehend that she had understood the lessons, although wasn’t able to catch the things properly… but it didn’t seem a good idea. Then she took a piece of parchment from inside her rucksack and began copying from her Potions book. Only the potion which horned slug was used she couldn’t read, as the pages were glued by the mucus from the smashed slug. She figured out what some words could be.
When she finished copying, she walked slowly to the teacher’s desk and waited for the other student to finish her/his explanations. Then she began reading emotionless:
Quote:
- Nettle is used when the stinging effect is necessary. Dried nettles are used to prepare the Swelling Solution.
- Flobberworm mucus is sometimes used to thicken potions, Herbicide for example.
- Horned slugs is sticky and disgusting, I thought it's used as bonding material .I think is used to prepare a kind of potion that cures skin disease.
- Lavender is used in too many potions in which is necessary a calming fragrance, an example is Sleeping Draught.
Then she said: “Look, Professor Lafay”look? Worse way to talk to a teacher, she thought, and added: “I can’t use these ingredients. In the book is said that the nettles must be dried, and I brought fresh nettles, I must waiting for them dry to be useful. The Flobberworm mucus is mixed with dried leaves and clods. I know you had told us you’re not our mother and I’m happy you aren’t. I mean, my mum isn’t able to teach a single thing to anybody”, she added, desperately, as she could feel the teacher glaring at her and her heart began hammering against her chest. The nettles aren’t dried yet? She could feel herself drying under the teacher’s stare. She politely asked: ”May you could help me to filter the mucus? I think it’s not useful this way with the leaves and the clods…” her politeness didn’t seem to work. She swallowed. "A smashed horned slug is still a horned slug, I suppose… so it’d be ok if I use it, though I should borrow a book to read the potion where it’s used, as the pages of my book had sticked when the horned slug was smashed into it. To finish, the flowers of lavender are extremely necessary??? “please, reply they aren’t.“If it was, I might look for another ingredients, teacher. Give me a week.” She tried to grin and wait for the teacher’s reply, while dried her sweaty hands on her robe.

"Alright. The way a potioneer creates a potion, if they look for ingredients that have the properties to bring out in the potion, and then they tweak the amounts to achieve the desired effect. This can be very hard. What I want you all to do now, if take those 4 ingredients, and tell me what properties they have..." She looked around and pulled the sprig of peppermint from the Odessa boy. "Peppermint makes you less nauseated. What kind of potions would you use it in?" She asked, but didn't wait for an answer... "Once you've told me what each ingredient does, we will start brewing with them."
They had to brew with them? Sarah was not having any blood in her potion. Maybe she should trade with someone if they have to.
She then took out a partchment and began to write
Quote:
Fangs of Biting Toadstools- used in healins potions, also as the fangs are used for eating so they get some magical properties
feathers of eagle owl- used in dragon tonic which is needed for sick dragons
ginger - Used in the Wit-Sharpening Potion a potion which helps people clear the mind.
blood - love(it came from a very loved person), can be given to vampires
Happy with the list Sarah raised her hand, "I got fangs from a biting toadstools, toadstools are used in healing potions. Then I got some feather from an eagle owl, those are used in dragon tonic." yes professor, some people actually take care of dragons not harvest them for potions. "the ginger roots are used in potions such as the wit sharpening potion, yet there are a lot of medicinial uses of them, such as treating stomach issues, the common cold, and aches and pains also I use ginger for my remedy for chillblains". It was also one of the herbs Sarah studied for Herbology in her second year. Then she had a vial of blood, "and I have a vial of blood, which can be used to make treats for vamipires such as blood sweets, yet also the person whose blood it was is very loved so perhaps it absorbed some of the properties of being loved, as I have read that blood is said to do. Maybe it can also be used in the blood replenishing potion, also as in the cases of unicorn blood and reem blood, blood seems to have properties that add life" She said. She hped it was okay that she had to use her blood, yet due to her nosebleed she ran out of time to get a different fourth ingridient.
Isobel kind of wished she'd gotten some more interesting ingredients, now that she was going to have to brew a potion using them. Still, she opened up her textbook to the index, then flipped through pages to the entry on page 161- Belladonna. She glanced over the page, and then summarised to the best of her ability. "Um, belladonna is a plant," obviously, she was looking directly at a sprig of it on her desk, "it's very poisonous and can be used in hair-changing potion and truth serum. It's also useful for... uh," she squinted at the page, "pupil dilation and for lessening pain."
Okay, Isobel flipped back to the index for the next thing, a bunch of weird-looking insect pieces. Glumbumble parts, the jar had been labelled. "The treacle produced by the glumbumble can be used as an antidote to Alihotsy-induced hysteria," she read from the book. And if she remembered correctly... "I believe it's also used in the Elixir to Induce Euphoria." Whoo, that potion was a mouthful to say.
The next one was pretty obvious, in fact she'd chosen it precisely because she knew exactly what one would use them for. "Um, I also have a bunch of lacewing flies, which are useful in lots of potions. You're supposed to stew them for twenty-one days beforehand, though, for them to be properly ready. They're in Polyjuice potion, and most de-aging potions. Also, muggles use them to kill aphids." Once when she was younger, Isobel had had a lacewing colony that her mum had bought her. It was great until they all died at once due to temperature changes, which was devastating.
Last, and probably least, she had a small pile of scurvy grass. It didn't look all that exciting, to be honest, and if she hadn't picked it up from the storeroom Isobel would have thought it was just normal grass from someone's backyard. "Scurvy grass is commonly used in the Befuddlement draught and other potions for confusion. It can make people do things without thinking about them, depending on the potion. It's also used by muggles to cure scurvy, which is caused by low Vitamin C." Hence the name, scurvy grass, of course. "According to the book, it's also in the potion Shara- Shaza- I mean, Shahara..." okay, pronouncing this thing was not worth it. Isobel just gave up, because really, no word should have that many a's.
Now all she had to do was write down everything she'd just said. Yikes, she was already forgetting. She pulled out a quill and scribbled it all down as well as she could.

This part was a little more difficult, not because Mo hadn't really retrieved actual ingredients, but because he obviously didn't know every potion possible and the options were kind of overwhelming. He opened his text and flipped around for a bit, taking note of the various uses of his ingredients before finally raising his hand.
"So the first ingredient I collected was some discarded moke skin. I figured since we use parts from other lizards, that a magical lizard would have even more uses," Mo responded thoughtfully. "But so far all I found was use in a version of the Deflating Draught." Moving on? "The next ingredient I collected was magical horse hair. Obviously the different kinds of hair serve different purposes. Unicorn hair is a great restorative, while thestral hair..." He couldn't find his thestral hair now. Invisible. "Well, nevermind. Abraxan hair is a good additive for the Girding Potion."
He took a deep breath and moved on. "I also picked some dandelions. Not only can you brew a really nice tea that helps promote visions, but it also makes a wine. Plus the roots are dead useful as a daisy root substitute." His very last ingredient tried to scurry away, and Mo plucked up one of the cockroaches and dropped it back into the jar. "Cockroaches make good snacks if you like cockroach clusters. Their eyes and legs are useful in Stealth potions, and you can use them ground up in potions intended to increase hardiness and longevity."

She nodded as she listened and looked at people's explanations. "Very good, really very good, all of you. I wanted to know what the properties are, but some are telling me in what potions they go it... which is also a good way to figure what they do."
She returned to her desk and said "That is all for this class... You may leave your ingredients at your table. For homework, I'll be opening this room later. You will come back and brew a potion with those ingredients. You may add water, and magic, but no adding of anything else. If you wish to pair up with someone and make one potion with your 8 combined ingredients that's fine. Your goal is that your potion should do something. If you fail, that is alright, I am sure that happens to some of you..." and she looked over to Kinsley...
... yup... he was on her list.
"I will close the classroom in exactly two weeks from when it's opened." She began putting her papers away and then looked around to the students and annoyed said, "What are you waiting for? You are all dismissed!"

So this was happening...they were actually going to have to brew a potion with the stuff they'd gathered. Well that was just brilliant, really. Not that Ella was going to get all pouty about it. Professor Lafay did say they could pair up and that'd be awesome, yeah? A partner meant more possible ingredients and someone to give you a bezoar if you, oh, started to like die or something. Yeah...partners were definitely good.
Ella made sure all her ingredients were accounted for and then packed up her things. She casually eyed her classmates' tables on the way out to see what other people had. Y'know, so she could approach someone about partnering up later.
"Thanks for the lesson, Professor." She said on the way out, offering Lafay a small smile.
Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite
The fact that the Professor didn't suddenly start shooting dagger glares at her told her that she wasn't completely off with what she said. Good. Though this proved that people could talk their way out of just about anything.
She began getting her things together and piling her ingredients more neatly on her desk while the Professor spoke of the homework. Her eyes widened and she couldn't stop the grin from forming. This had to be one of the coolest pieces of potions homework she'd ever gotten. They could play mad scientist!!!!!! It'd be so epic!!! Without a doubt at least one person's cauldron would blow up and she was kinda hoping it'd be hers. Like how cool would that be???
At the same time, making their own potions, wow. Anything they could come up with. The possibilities were endless and soooo tempting.
Once she was all packed up she slung her bag over her shoulder and beamed over at the Professor. "Wonderful lesson Professor, the whole 'I'm not a nice person' really added to it!!!" BEEEAAAAM. And now she was kinda wishing she could grow up to be like her.
Yeah....

Dylan was casually leaning back in his seat, listening to everyone talk. It was all interesting stuff, of course...He enjoyed potions because it was an exact art. Yes, there was a process of figuring out amounts of ingredients and such...but after one was done with that, it was smooth sailing.
It was also rather exciting to think they'd be creating a potion today. The Slytherin figured it was time to get creative....since the school was broke.
Hand-raising..."I started off with dittany...which is a healing plant...and one of those things were a little goes a long way. Essence of dittany is used for cuts and surface wounds....The mercury was something that I had." There was some throat clearing for that one...because it WAS poisonous and all that. "I haven't personally used it before...but I was hoping to start experimenting with it as a conductor for poisons. Kinda like the bezoar stone does." Yea.....Yeeaaaaaaaa. "Then I somehow found a Graphorn horn...."Somehow. There was no giving away triad secrets with others listening. He'd been the only one smart enough to think of it, obviously. "It's used in cures for uncommon poisons...in powdered form." He was hoping to mix it with the mercury and make something interesting. "...and lastly, my own blood. I've read a ton of places that blood is used in darker potions...but I think I can experiment with it and give it new purpose...since it is the source of life."
It wasn't a big deal. He'd had an accident...and that was that.
........
Oh...they weren't brewing in class?
Biting at his lip, the Slytherin carefully gathered up his ingredients and then settled them down into his bag. He'd need to put them in a better place so they wouldn't get smashed or crushed prematurely.
Standing, he saluted Professor Lafay and smirked. "Nice lesson, Professor."...and then he was leaving.

So this was going to boil down into research. Yep....they would have to research more about the ingredients they have collected and figure out what kind of potion these could create. Merlin....what in Merlin's name was she going to come up with the items she had? Unicorn tail hair, jobberknoll feathers, gillyweed, bubotuber pus? Good luck to me. That needed to be said....or thought. She might as well use the free time she had later this afternoon for research then. Or...find someone and maybe combine ingredients with.
Uh huh.
The Ravenclaw left her ingredients on the table, per Professor Lafay's instructions and quickly gathered her things. The woman was telling them to get out of there so there was no use sticking around...unless they were up for trouble of course.
When she had everything, she headed for the door....only stopping in front of the Professor desk to say a goodbye. "Thank you for the lesson, Professor. Have and nice day and goodbye." And out the Castell went.
Kace was going to have to write down all the ingredients he used and what they would be used for in a potion.
SPOILER!!: Parchment
Valerian Root- the roots are used for ingredients in potions such as the Draught of the Living death and Draught of peace.
Aconite-Its flowers are useful in potion-making, but its leaves are very toxic. Aconite is most commonly known as an ingredient of Wolfsbane Potion.
Water- water has a number of applications, such as its use in Potions, the preferred form being standard potioning water. It can be produced at will using magic.
Eagle Owl Feather-They are used in the Dragon Tonic.
After he wrote down the ingredients then he heard the professor ending the lesson. She wanted them to come back and make a potion with their ingredients. At least they would be fine if they failed. Not everyone was perfect. Kace got his stuff like his notebook and quill and put it into his bag.
He put it over his shoulder and told the professor..."Thanks professor for the lesson. I learned a lot about ingredients that is for sure." he nodded and smiled. Then he left the classroom and was on his way.
