She wasn't paying much attention to anything in particular, juuuust looking around at everything, thinking about her candy and the occasional random humming that seemed to be happening more and more frequently since lately. Humming was fuuuuuun.
Her attention only returned to the class when the first question was asked.
!!!!
It wasn't one about the ingredients and what they did!! GOOD! She never knew the answer to those. This though, she could answer, even if only a little so she stuck her hand up. "It's a mixture--the magic kind--that you have to brew in order to obtain and it can be used for lots of stuff. Like you could use it to heal someone...or poison someone...or...well, like I said, you could use it for lots of stuff because the mixture has an effect on the people it's used on."
That's basically it...to her anyway.

Uh...... okay that was a weird way to start the class. But then, everything was weird and different this term. So...yeah. "A potion is a brew or drink that has various effects on the user depending on what type of potion it is." Basically, they could do pretty much anything if brewed correctly. Though, personally, if there was either a spell or a muggle concoction that would do the same thing, she pretty much tended use those. Most potions tasted nasty and took much too long to brew. Shortcuts for the win!

Better safe than sorry.
Nigel raised his hand and answered the question. "A Potion is a magical mixture usually mixed or brewed in a cauldron."
It was basically the textbook definition. But whatever it was right and Nigel wanted to see what they were going to be brewing today.

Tobias had progressed to tapping slightly on the desk, but stopped at once when the professor (Lafay apparently?) pointed her wand at the door. He couldn't see it or hear it, but presumed she had closed it. But why did she need her wand to do that? She couldn't have locked it... surely?
Literally shaking his head to get rid of that idea, the Hufflepuff raised his hand at her question, even though he wasn't entirely sure of the answer. The energy had to go somewhere, and talking was the best thing to try. "Uh, is it like... a mixture of certain ingredients, but only like actual proper ingredients, like magic things, and they work on living things by kind of... changing things about them. Physically and not so physically. And they can be bad as well as good." He was unsure and his words had a way of abandoning him when he needed them most. Tobias shifted slightly, acting as though he was pulling his stool closer to the table to try to disguise his need to constantly fidget.

Listening a moment, she couldn't believe Lafay wouldn't just expect the first years to know that. Did she think this knew lot were slower then most?
Putting her hand up she answered, "Professor a potion is something that is brewed with different ingredients. Depending on the ingredients the potion could do almost anything you need it to from poisoning someone to almost bringing someone back from near death." She put her hand down and listened to the others.

And Professor Lafay had called her Captain Bishop, which was nice to hear. She still wasn't quite used to hearing it but she smiled anyhow.
And the boyfriend sat next to her which was good, for reasons. Also bad for reasons too. Concentration reasons. Because trying to concentrate while he was around was going to be a struggle.
The blonde listened carefully to Lafay's question and thought it over for a minute or two before raising her hand in the air. "Professor, a potion is a mixture of ingredients and like Alexa said, potions can heal, harm, or give the person taking the potion the desired effects of said potion... if brewed correctly. For example, a love potion would cause the drinker to become infatuated with another person."

Well, that was a surprisingly simple (and broad) question. Surprising to Isobel, anyway. It encompassed a lot, but she thought she could answer it. She took a deep breath before she spoke up.
"Well, a potion is a liquid or close to liquid combination of magical ingredients, usually heated at some point, and brewed in a cauldron but not necessarily. And the potion has some kind of effect on whoever drinks it. Some can do things just from contact, though, and those usually shouldn't be drunk," she added hastily, remembering plenty that could be harmful if ingested. There, Isobel thought she answered the question completely, if in a bit of a roundabout and twisty way.

That had to be a trick question, right? ... Or maybe not..? Derry had no idea, she didn't know the definition of potion, she just knew what they did. Some of them. But... it was good to hazard a guess, right? "A potion is a mixture of ingredients, sometimes including a magic spell as well as magic ingredients, and they have to be mixed in the right order with the right amounts to work properly..." Right..? "And they're for... whatever the specific potion is for. There are hundreds of uses..."
She was writing some of the suggestions down, scribbling away in an attempt to get everything written down. Because she'd forget it otherwise... probably...
SPOILER!!: Derry's Notes
Derryth Ferrier Potions
1. What is a potion?
Liquid
Paste
Mixture
Concoction
2. What are they for?
Healing
Cleaning
Curses
Enhancement ... of... stuff
Poison
Embellishment (?)

Um...really? Someone's got to REALLY be lost to not even know what a potion IS. She raised her hand to contribute and tried her best not to let her amusement at the easy question show in her voice. "A potion, is a magical brew that can have almost any effect you'd like. They can be consumed, topical, or used for an area treatment such as turning a room dark or making it smell awful. Potions require specific ingredients and procedures in order for them to work." Her mind went back to some of the really intricate potions they'd made before. The one that set things on fire that didn't really burn was one that really stood out in her mind. But then again so was that horrible smelling one they'd tested in the pods. She shivered at the memory.

For example, Tora had no idea what the question the Professor had just asked and so she sat out the first few times a student answered to see if she could figure it out. Ahhh. Ok. Once she felt she got the gist she raised her hand. "Uh, well, a potion is a combination of a bunch of ingredients, magical and non, to make a, uh, mixture that helps with certain...." Tora searched for the right word. "Ailments! A mixture that helps with certain ailments which aren't only limited to stuff like boils, or illness, or werewolf-ness, but could refer to ailments of other people like if you want someone to fall in love with you, or if you want to poison someone, or if you need a bit of extra oomph." She said firmly, completing her initially tentative idea. Geez, she really hoped this Professor was OK with slightly longwinded answers, otherwise she would be in trouble...

Ooh class was starting!
What a potion was? Seriously. Potions used to be fun and suddenly now they were being asked rudimentary questions. She didn't remember her first class being this - this boring? Did this have something to do with the turnstiles? She wondered as she glanced up at Professor Lafay and tired not to let her jaw drop.
Were they going to learn about something lame today - like how ingredients make up the potion or something. Or was there going to be any potion making what so ever? She wondered. Still the Ravenclaw in her made her want to answer.
Raising her hand she spoke. "A potion in general is something that one drinks because the word potion comes from the Greek word Poton which means 'that which one drinks' but it also comes from the Latin word Potio...meaning 'drink'...but there are also unctions which are a form of elixir and therefore a potion." Yep. She was kind of clawing it.
She flushed and glanced down at the table - Professor Lafay was probably looknig for something simple. Like Potions are a mixture of ingredients to get a certain effect with their properties or what not. Yeah something like that would have sounded sane and less text-book-Ravenclaw.

And at the first question, she listened to others answer, and everyone had basically said the same thing. But still, just to make her presence known, she answered. So, then she raised her hand and answered, "Professor, a potion is a mixture of various ingredients combined together in specific proportions, and having specific properties." Then adding to her answer, she said, "Some can cure a disease, while some others are poisons meant to maim or kill." As in, they can be used for both, in good ways and to cause harm. That was a pretty simple question but even though the question was simple, the answer was pretty a complicated one as describing the subject of Potions was not an easy thing at all. Potions was an art and one had to be careful with it. Or..at least that was what Rich thought.
''Potion, as a word, means drink.'' he began after clearing his throat ''But not all we brew are meant to be drunk. So, i guess, i can say that it is a magical liquid that only those with magical abilities can make. I heard what my friends said but you don't have to be a witch or wizard to brew a potion. For example, hags can do it as well. To brew a proper potion, you need the enough intellectual capability, vast knowledge, ingredients and magical ability.''
Was that right? He supposed it was. Hah...of course it was. Richard trusted his skills when it was about Potions. It was one of the things, after charming girls, that he was confident with himself. ''A skilled potioneer can brew a potion that would help him to do almost anything that he can do with magic. But we can say that they are used to bewitch, heal or poison in general. The case of potions created with dark magic is another thing though. Those can have other purposes.''

"Well Potion comes from potio which is Latin for 'beverage' or 'drink', and the Greek poton which means 'that which one drinks', and it gives you a bit of a clue there: potions are generally liquids but they don't always have to be ingested." West began.
"They are used for medicinal or magical purposes, and sometimes they are poisons. A potion is a combination of ingredients, prepared in a bunch of ways, and depending on how they're prepared or administered a potion can be called a brew, a concoction, a tisane, an elixir, or a tincture, amongst other names." Because they weren't all the same thing after all. Kind of like the difference between a charm, a hex, and a jinx or whatever. All were spells but they were still different.
"Almost anything you can do with a spell, you could do with a potion in theory."
West dropped his hand and fell quiet, curious to see where this lesson was going, given they rarely dropped back to basics.
"Very good Master Odessa, that's a very exact answer." She said to him. "Though some of us would say that a potion does everything spells can and more."

Hmm. So they were back to basics for this lesson?
Beezus supposed it was a review for the returning students and an introduction for the the new ones but as answers came after another, she didn't feel the need to repeat what most of her peers had provided. She didn't want to be repetitive so she stayed on her seat, a quill tucked between her fingers which she rapped noiselessly against the desk as she listened quite intently to what her classmates were saying.
"Miss Castell, if you cannot deign us with an answer, I would appreciate you not keep time with your fingers on your table..." Annoying sound....

Master Stark. Smirky smirk. Yeah, he liked the sound of that. Maybe he could get a motion going for everyone to call him that for reasons. What an AWESOME name.
Anyway, as he mulled over all of the endless possibilities that nickname had, he noticed that the lesson had started. Part of him wanted to raise his hand and answer this question because he did know the answer. At the same time, though, he just did NOT want to do anything. And that was what he intended to do. So he just sat there and waited for everyone else to answer. His answer wouldn't break the bank anyway.
"Master Stark, wipe that grin off your face and pay attention!" She said and pointed at him. "At least pretend to want to answer."
She then sighed. "Alright, who can tell me the 5 C's of potion making?" Let's see who studied...

SHE KNEW THAT ONE!
Peyton raised her hand. "The five C's are: color, content, concentration, care, and cleanliness." Her mother followed all of those. There was even a label in their potion's room with all these points down. Yvette, one of her oldest sisters, was the only one that followed it with extreme care. What a worrywart.

The 5 C's of potion making? Haruka remembered hearing something like that before, but she couldn't remember exactly. She thought it through completely and actually wrote some things out a few times before she was content with her answer. "The 5 C's are cleanliness, content... concentration ...care and color!"

The five Cs? O___O
WHAT was that? What on Earth were the five Cs of potion making? Seriously, Derry had no idea... She looked over at all the other students, was this something she should know? She got the feeling it was something taught every year... So she kept her mouth shut and took notes instead of making a fool of herself.

Blink. Blink. Blink.
The...er...the 5 C's of Potions...? It sounded familiar, something the Professor might have said in any of the numerous lessons they had but the thing with Lex was, she didn't remember. There weren't many things Lex remembered unless you chose to. Selective memory, you see. Oh dear, and just when she was going good with the question answering.
This would not stop her. She would look like she knew what was going on in the class. It was as simple as listening, which she did. Now for the answer.
She raised her hand, feeling positively clever at the moment. "The 5 C's are as my classmates say Professor; color, concentration, content, cleanliness and care." And she ended with a sweet smile. Yuuuuup.
She sooo had this.

"Some would." West agreed in earnest. "I think it comes down to how instantly you want a thing to happen, and how long you want the effects to last. Since with potions you have to have the patience and skill to brew them well, and they have the benefit of working once they're done without the person who made it having to concentrate the whole time its being used. They last longer and go further. And they still work after the original brewer is dead too, which is cool."
As for the 5 Cs he knew them well enough, but as the answer had been given already.... Well. He figured he better answer just to show he was paying attention so West kept his hand up, "The five C's are Colour, Content, Concentration, Care and Cleanliness."

Jory knew the answer to this. Repeating this in his head every year would certainly make it stick. He raised his hand. "The five C's are color, content, care, cleanliness..." he said ticking them off on his fingers. Wait a minute. He was forgetting one. So much for them to be stuck in his head. Oh yes! "And concentration!'' he added, as the word sprang back into his head.

Not that it really needed to be said again, but Eliza wanted Professor Lafay to know she was listening, so she nodded and said, "They've got it right, Professor. Color, cleanliness, content, concentration, and care." She kept her notebook open, at the ready for note taking.

The five C's of potion making?
Hah. Like Alice knew what those were.
Still, y'know, everyone else naming them over and over again left her loads of room to raise her hand and say the answer and all, but she wasn't so bored as to be reduced to repetition just yet. Plus, hand raising required effort and all, and she just wanted to do nothing. So that's what she did. And ponder all the other C words that they could have included instead, like conduct or caution. Those seemed important enough to include to her.
7 C's of potion making. Seemed more legit.

She knew this too. Of course she should know this. Ira raised her hand up and answered, "The 5C's are color, concentration, content, cleanliness and care."

There were five C's to potion making. Well this was definitely new to him. Michael just stared blankly at Lafay for a moment before looking to the girl beside him. Did she know what these five C's were?
And then other students began to answer and he let out an internal snort. Oh riiight. He raised his hand, "What they said." No point in pretending he knew the answer.

Oh, Hooray, he was right enough. That was great, even if the question hadn't been that hard. Taking his quill, he diped it in the ink, and jotted down, "potions basics" and then wrote most of what he had said. Oh, and the five C's he wrote that down, but he had to think really hard about what those were. He knew them, he knew he did. But what were they? There was Color, Content, Concentration, and Care. But what was the other one? Think, think, think. Oh, yeah! Cleanliness. That one was the easiest. He'd seen people get yelled at for it. How had he forgotten it? Raising his hand, he answered. "Cleanliness, Color, Content, Concentration, and Care"

So this was what Potions was reduced to this term? Simple review? Did the Headmistress make Professor Lafay sell off all the ingredients? That sucked. Seriously. But, Sky knew she had to answer, even though she'd been through this lesson already, just to show that she paying attention. "The five C's are cleanliness, color, content, concentration and care." Yep.

"Yes, very good. You are all correct." She said nodding.
"Very good Master Odessa, that's a very exact answer." She said to him. "Though some of us would say that a potion does everything spells can and more."
She blinked. "Master Branxton, that is a very good way of describing it. Good. Thank you." The boy was not just a pretty face, he seemed to always have a very intelligent answer.
... Mhmmm... Make up. "Thank you for your insightful answer..."
Make up... Merlin help her.
Hecate stood there and blinked at the boy.
"Explosions?" She said and closed her eyes a little. "I NEED A PREFECT TO SIT BESIDES MASTER DE FERREIS!!! NOW!!!!" She announced with eyes still closed.
"Miss Castell, if you cannot deign us with an answer, I would appreciate you not keep time with your fingers on your table..." Annoying sound....
"Master Stark, wipe that grin off your face and pay attention!" She said and pointed at him. "At least pretend to want to answer."

Mika just squirmed a bit in her seat and glanced over toward Zeke when she heard the announcement of needing a prefect to sit by him. That, wasn't good was it. She was just glad she wasn't sitting next to a person who favored explosions.
When the girl brought up make-up Mika could hardly stifle a laugh. Make up was silly. And besides the look Lafay was giving was priceless. I can not laugh she told herself, but it was too late. Her body was already shaking from holding back the laughter.
She faked a few badly placed coughs before trying to speak - it was obvious she was trying not to laugh though. Raising her hand so as not to attract too much more attention to herself she answered the question. "The five C's are Cleanliness, Color, Content, Concentration, and Care" Yep, she was still in her normal bubbly mood.

Another basic question.
Well, actually it wasn't bad starting the class with some basic knowledge because maybe they forgot about them (and for some firsties they were clueless about that.) Christina just wondered if Professor Lafay always started her first lesson by asking the basic knowledge to the students to remind them about them.
She raised her hand and answered her question. "The five C's are Cleanliness, Color, Content, Concentration and Care. And all of them are affected to the result of our potions." Of course she was true. How could your potion became good if you didn't pay attention to the five C's. That's very basic.

Hmm. The 5 C's of potions. Clement knew that. Before he decided to put his arm up in the air, he decided to write them down onto his parchment first. He was attempting to make his notes neat this year, so that he could use them to revise from next year before his NEWTs. He wasn't too sure how that was going to work out really though, he'd probably get bored of it half way throughout the year. But at least he could pretend that he'd had a good start. It took him a few minutes to write the 5 C's down, and then he raised his hand. "I believe that the 5 C's are Colour, Content, Cleanliness, care and concentration." If that was wrong, he would appear a little silly, but seeing as all of his class mates were saying the same thing, Cle had an idea that he was correct.

He knew this! He actually knew this. They'd definitely gone over it a few times in previous years, as well as it coming up in his textbooks. How could anyone NOT know this? Theo put his hand into the air with a big fat grin... "They are... cleanliness." Of course that would be first. "Colour... Concentration..." He paused for a moment.
... a long moment.
"And... care."
Yup, that was five, right? Theo continued smiling at himself, completely oblivious to the fact that he had only named four.

They were totally on the basics, and it was obvious. The 5 C's on Potions came out on her OWLs, so why can't Kat no know it? She had studied harder in Potions than any other subject for OWLs. She obviously knew what the 5 C's were. And then somewhat sit with that Gryffindor? A prefect?
Kat looked back at the Gryffindor, whom she didn't even know. Maybe a prefect from his house would sit with him, because she wouldn't. And he might distract her from listening during Potions discussion.
So no.
Anyway, the 5 C's. "Colour, Content, Care, Concentration, and Cleanliness," Kat said after raising her hand to answer. She totally reminded that by heart, did you know? Yeah, anyway.

5 Cs, Juliet smiled. She knew what those 5 Cs meant indeed. She raised her hand to answer the professor. "the 5 Cs stands for concentration, color, content, care, and cleanliness" that was pretty much it. Oh! "It's the golden rule when before, during and after brewing a potion" in fact Professor Lafay is quite strict with one C, which is the cleanliness part.

Laura looked at the Professor and smiled, she knew this one just like she knew the other one, "The Five C are- Colour, Content, Concentration, Cleanliness and last but not least Care." Laura was sure that she was right.

The Five C's. The Five C's. Hmmm. Think Carsyn! Think! She was mortified by her ability to recall the answer. She was usually so good at regurgitating book knowledge. Perhaps she just wasn't cut out for classes... Being smart back home might not translate to here. Trying not to cry out of desperation, Carsyn thought to herself, You need to focus. Concentrate! Concentrate... Wait a second... concentration is one of the five C's! And just like that the answer came back to her. She flung her hand into the air in relief and spoke the answer aloud, "The five C's are care, cleanliness, colour, concentration, and content." In alphabetical order, as they should be.

Gwen tried to keep a straight face as she heard Lafay say something about a prefect having to sit next to Zeke, all because of that ‘explosions’ thing. Heh. So funny. But no, she was not going to laugh. Even though it wasn’t very easy to keep calm. Erm.
Anyway.
The 5 C’s.
‘The five C’s are Cleanliness---’ Yes, always starting with cleanliness. So that it would avoid having the whole potion ruined. But anyway, moving on- ‘Colour, Content, Concentration and Care’

Richard snorted rather loudly when he heard what Professor Lafay said in reply to the Zeke boy's answer. Hahaha...Merlin, Gryffindors. Are not they...thickheaded? Their being thickheaded was kind of different though. Rich discovered it not very long after he had transferred to this school that he enjoyed it pretty much. They made him laugh all the time.
He eyed the boy a bit then turned back to the professor when she asked another question. The five C's of potion making. Well...a pretty easy question. Cleanliness, care, concentration, color and content. Yet since others had already provided the answer, Rich just remained silent and looked around instead wondering if he would see a pretty face around where he was sitting.

Annabeth didn't know this response, rather than of pretending to be dead, she chose to repeat the others' reply, emotionless, then she raised her hand and said: "The 5C's are color, concentration, content, cleanliness and care."It should be correct, though Professor Lafay didn't give any tip whether this response had been the proper one, Annabeth thought staring at the teacher, trying to decode her facial expressions.

Minerva was shocked.. She knew that it was the first lesson and that first years needed to know this stuff, but wow they were really pulling away at everything and going back to basics. Then her head swung to look at Zeke as he answered knowing Lafay was not going to be happy. Then she said about a prefect, Min glanced at Ethan and just hoped someone would step up and go sit next to him, so Ethan could just stay next to her.
Now the next question and again Min just looked forward. So the 5 C's, well again the first years really needed to know this, because Lafay was not very nice if you forgot. "Professor, the 5 C's are concentration, color, content, care, and cleanliness" With all this basic stuff, Min was feeling her mind want to wonder.
