The young girl looked with her quill in her hand at the teacher, ready to write that what the teacher told the class and made her notes. Sonea pointed her hand in the air and tried to answer the question. “A potion is a substance, created by a witch or wizard, you can heal, hurt and even poison somebody with a potion.” Sonea hoped that she had answered the question right because she was not sure if her answer wasn’t good enough. She looked a little nervous when she sat back down in her chair and waited. |

Ooh class was starting! What a potion was? Seriously. Potions used to be fun and suddenly now they were being asked rudimentary questions. She didn't remember her first class being this - this boring? Did this have something to do with the turnstiles? She wondered as she glanced up at Professor Lafay and tired not to let her jaw drop. Were they going to learn about something lame today - like how ingredients make up the potion or something. Or was there going to be any potion making what so ever? She wondered. Still the Ravenclaw in her made her want to answer. Raising her hand she spoke. "A potion in general is something that one drinks because the word potion comes from the Greek word Poton which means 'that which one drinks' but it also comes from the Latin word Potio...meaning 'drink'...but there are also unctions which are a form of elixir and therefore a potion." Yep. She was kind of clawing it. She flushed and glanced down at the table - Professor Lafay was probably looknig for something simple. Like Potions are a mixture of ingredients to get a certain effect with their properties or what not. Yeah something like that would have sounded sane and less text-book-Ravenclaw. |

Tell me what a potion is and what they are for. Such a very basic question, right? Her question was a bit.. unexpected. But of course Christina knew the answer. "Potion is a magical mixture that usually brewed in cauldrons, it can be used as medicine or poison." She answered as she raised her hand. She wondered why suddenly Professor Lafay asked them a very basic question. Did she usually start the lesson by asking them a basic knowledge like this? Hmm... |
What a potion was? Well Clement knew that. Well he had better do, or he had no reason in passing his potion Owl has year. Which he did. Which was the reason why he was sitting here in the class in the first place of course. After a few minutes thinking, and listening to the other students obviously, he raised his hand. "A potion is a mix of various ingredients, such as bat wings and boomslang." See he could remember some stuff. He hadn't forgotten it all over summer, which had been something he'd been a little nervous about. He had to wait for a minute now, trying to work out what the correct word was. A summer of speaking just french had made his English a little rusty. "They can sometimes be used for medicine, but they can also be used for stuff, such as to make the drinker lucky, or give them strength." |

Well, there goes the signal of the beginning of class. Zeke watched as they were Potions. Uh. The Gryffindor raised his hand a little. "Potions is something we brew....and study every year in this class?" Blink. They're for...er. "They're for...lots of things." Like really weird things, besides using them as healing stuff. "Like explosions." |

Text Cut: Professor Lafay So they were quickly going over the basics? What was a potion and what where they for? The Slytherin smiled, happy that she actually knew this "Well... a potion is usually a magical brew, that can be consumed" something the blonde remembered because of the etymology behind the word. "Some uses can be to heal people... or poison them in some cases... but there can be other things... she finished her rambling as she thought of the polyjuice potion she was reading about earlier... She didn't know what category that would fall under though! |
Potions. Potions. YAHOOO! She cocked her head and looked at the professor with all the concentration she could muster up. She had been waiting for this class. The Brewing Class. Sounds cool. She couldn't wait to get started. Couldn't wait to brew something amazing! Wait till dad knows.. He had been showing off lately, telling her to stay away from the basement and his potions until she attended the potions class. What is a potion? What..? She doesn't know that? "It's a liquid..brewed to perfection..only by apt potionists" Like dad "..to be consumed by people to have ANY desired effect they want" Ask basic question, get basic answers. Savvy? |
Hmm. So they were back to basics for this lesson? Beezus supposed it was a review for the returning students and an introduction for the the new ones but as answers came after another, she didn't feel the need to repeat what most of her peers had provided. She didn't want to be repetitive so she stayed on her seat, a quill tucked between her fingers which she rapped noiselessly against the desk as she listened quite intently to what her classmates were saying. |

Lafay was getting seriously sassy with Theo lately. He just blinked at her exaggeration of his name, and looked down at his desk. What was a potion? That was possibly the easiest question ever, so the Slytherin felt no problem at all at raising his hand straight away. "It is a brew... or a mixture that has all sorts of different effects, depending on what ingredients a person adds." He said with a nod. |
So what is a potion eh, hmm, that a rather interesting question since it can be answered in many different ways. However the answer at the core is simple and I know just how to answer this, I better after 5 years of magical training. She raised her hand, "Potions are concoctions brewed up to do many different things from mundane to helpful t especially harmful depending on the ingredients and the timing you put them in you're potion.". |
Laura raised her hand and decided to answer the question. "Potions can be used for many different things, but I would say the most important thing that Potions can be used for is healing the sick, because without the potion that they take they could die from the illness they have." Laura sighed, she really thought the nurses at St Mungo must be happy with the work they were doing and Laura thought that they weren't appreciated enough. |

To repair some of the damage done by her paralyzing shyness, Carsyn forced herself to raise her hand in response to the professor's question about potions, and offered, "Potions are a blending of ingredients, combined using very specific formulas to create a magical liquid, in which each ingredient is chosen to impart a specific quality to the whole. Potions can be used for so many things - the purpose is often at the will of the witch or wizard brewing it. Ultimately, their purpose is to effect a change in the one who consumes it." |

He could give a list of some of those things, but he'll leave that up to interpretation. There were vast amount of them. |

Basics. Hmm... okay. Not that Kat had anything bad towards it. It was going to be a refresher for them, and it was a new thing too. What was a potion? Yep, Lafay was really right about that basic thing. Kat raised her hand, even if everyone seemed to have answered. "Witches and wizards use ingredients in brewing potions which have different magical properties." Yeah that was about it. |

Anyway, as he mulled over all of the endless possibilities that nickname had, he noticed that the lesson had started. Part of him wanted to raise his hand and answer this question because he did know the answer. At the same time, though, he just did NOT want to do anything. And that was what he intended to do. So he just sat there and waited for everyone else to answer. His answer wouldn't break the bank anyway. |
Forrest had only a vague idea what a potion was. They always struck him like medicine. Syrup, to be exact. So, he raised his hand after a moment of giving it a thought, and said "They are liquid that wizards drink to have whatever effect they do." That was put in its most general. |
Ira was right there in the class.. somewhere Oh okay.. so this was going to be a basics class. Which shouldn't be at all difficult considering that she had just passed her OWL exams. And passed nicely enough in Potions especially. She settled in her seat, her bag in place at her feet and her parchments and quills ready. And at the first question, she listened to others answer, and everyone had basically said the same thing. But still, just to make her presence known, she answered. So, then she raised her hand and answered, "Professor, a potion is a mixture of various ingredients combined together in specific proportions, and having specific properties." Then adding to her answer, she said, "Some can cure a disease, while some others are poisons meant to maim or kill." As in, they can be used for both, in good ways and to cause harm. But then there were some others too, which didn't cause any harm, but weren't too useful either. |
Sophie was silently sitting by her work station after having organized everything and looked up when professor Lafay asked the first question. Weird... Sophie tried to remember when was the last time the professor had asked such a general question. The Slytherin Head of House usually went straight to the point of the lesson. But aaanyway, the Hufflepuff raised her hand before she spoke. "It's a mixture of ingredients and stuff that are put together for a purpose." A longer and less fun way to do things instead of using spells, in her opinion. Though she had to admit there were a few things Potions were more useful than actual spells. ...She would not mention that out loud, though. "They can be used to... do almost anything, really. Either by drinking it, or pouring it over something... or even just by smelling it!" This fact truly impressed Sophie, actually. And it was a bit creepy as well. Potions were nice, but spells were nicer! Yep. |
Oh, a really basic question. Cool. Penelope felt like she could answer this one then. So she raised her hand. "A potion is basically something that is created when witches and wizards mix together a lot of different ingredients, and what it does depends on what things are added and how many and when they're added and how many times the mixture is stirred and lots of other specific things like that." Lots and lots of specifics and so many different potions. Penelope wasn't sure how people came up with all of them. "And they can be used for almost anything, depending on what the potion is." |
What was a potion and what was it used for? That was a pretty simple question but even though the question was simple, the answer was pretty a complicated one as describing the subject of Potions was not an easy thing at all. Potions was an art and one had to be careful with it. Or..at least that was what Rich thought. ''Potion, as a word, means drink.'' he began after clearing his throat ''But not all we brew are meant to be drunk. So, i guess, i can say that it is a magical liquid that only those with magical abilities can make. I heard what my friends said but you don't have to be a witch or wizard to brew a potion. For example, hags can do it as well. To brew a proper potion, you need the enough intellectual capability, vast knowledge, ingredients and magical ability.'' Was that right? He supposed it was. Hah...of course it was. Richard trusted his skills when it was about Potions. It was one of the things, after charming girls, that he was confident with himself. ''A skilled potioneer can brew a potion that would help him to do almost anything that he can do with magic. But we can say that they are used to bewitch, heal or poison in general. The case of potions created with dark magic is another thing though. Those can have other purposes.'' |

"Potions can pretty much do what more spells and magic can...but are often times consumed orally. There are the exceptions...like that gross potion you had us brew last term." You know....the one that had him throwing up for days. The smell of spoiled milk just....He lost his 'can' with it. "They can cure aliments, cause pain, act as medicine, and even take lives." In other words? "Potions deserve patience, concentration, and respect." Yes, Dylan had been poetic about them...but he loved potions. So, it was to be expected. |

Okaaaay. Peyton stood up and sat down where Lafay told her to. She hugged her bag to her chest, eyeing her previous seat. She liked sitting at the front. She liked sitting at THAT specific spot. Oh well. This one would have to do. At least she wasn't sitting on the floor, right? Hahahaaa! She raised her hand to answer the question. "A potion is a magical mixture that can cause a variety of effects. It's ingredients, if not all, have magical proterties, too." |
