Seren lead the students across the grounds and into the castle, after what felt like a while walking -- perhaps because she wasn't used to venturing into the castle, she came to a halt in from of a cordoned of part of the first floor.. the Weasley Swamp.
The legendary portable swamp created by Fred and George Weasley was once large enough to consume the entire middle section of the first floor corridor, leading from the Dark Arts office to the History of Magic classroom. Nowadays, only a small section of the corridor is roped off in tribute of the redhead twins' swamp, but it is a historic section nonetheless.
The remaining swamp still SMELLS like authentic swamp, LOOKS like authentic swamp, BUBBLES like authentic swamp and would likely suck you in like an authentic swamp.
Mom says I have no sense of direction, so I packed my bags and right.
If what West said were here in the swamp then Oakey was done with this class. He Slumped done onto a wall and finished writing his notes.
As Bentley instructed them to begin sketching the swamp and label the important parts of the swamp, he set down his first parchment and pulled out a new one along with a color changing quill. As he finished with his drawing Oakey wrote down the annotations below them
Quote:
A. Slow moving Fresh Water, although looks murky due to Algae
B. Tall Grass gives shelter, help mantain soil, and provides food.
C. Dead Log Proves Shelter to insects and other small creatures, Fugi and thrive on these.
D. Tall Trees provide Shelter and Food, they also are what keeps the water fresh.
He looked down at the notes and quickly added a small reminder for himself.
SPOILER!!: Oakey's small reminder on his annotations
Note to self; Look for Flesh-Eating Trees of the World in Library
He stuffed his things in his bag when Bentley dismissed class. Figuring he may have annoyed the Professor during class he walked up to her before leaving. Sorry if I caused you trouble today Professor Bentley. He said apologetically.

Good...
So bubotuber grew in swamps too. He knew it. It just looked like a swampy kind, did not it? Feeling pleased that he actually managed to make a good guess in a class that he supposed he would not be so successful. Herbology...was hardly among the things he was interested in but he knew it was an important subject to he had to catch up and understand everything.
Unfortunately he had no idea what a swamp ecosystem could be good for and he did not have a guess either. Most people considered swamps trouble, did not they? If you happened to fall in, it just swallowed you to death. Plus it was very dirty. Waiting in silence, he just listened to others' ideas about the swamp ecosystem. Well..well...well...it looked like he was actually learning something in this class. He did not take notes though, he trusted his memory with remembering all those later.
Then...
Uh-oh...
He was supposed to sketch a swamp? Merlin! But he was no artist like that. Sighing a bit he just stared at the example the professor was showing off. He was sure that his was not going to be even close to that. Despite everything, he supposed he needed to stop the silent whining and get to work instead, so he took out the necessary stuff from his bag to draw a big failure of sketch of a swamp.
After a few moment, his big failure of a swamp sketch was done. He had to let out a deep sigh when he stared at it. Right, it was a huge failure. He hid it a bit so no one could see white he wrote down the annotations.
SPOILER!!: Annotations
A- Murky, slow moving water. Not pure water at all. Not for drinking.
B- Algae...important stuff for organism living in the ecosystem
C- Logs. They might have algae on them too. Shelter for...bugs perhaps?
D- Trees. Most likely the kind that likes extra humidity.
E- Tall grass that supports the mud/soil and prevents erosion
Okay...he supposed he was done now. And since the professor dismissed the class he supposed he could escape before anyone could see his fail of a sketch. So he quickly put his stuff back into the bag, threw it over his shoulder and waved at the professor. ''See you later, professor. Thanks for the class.'' and with that he left the place.

As instructed, Mordred got a parchment and quill and started to draw what he saw before him. He wasn't exactly in the mood to draw right now, and so what he did was literally a sketch of the swamp.
On another parchment, he wrote down the following:
SPOILER!!: Annotations
A- Trees that provide shelter and food.
B- Deep penetrating roots that act as filter and shelter for swamp inhabitats. Also a good source of algae.
C- Grass that holds the soil in place. Also a good source of nutrients
from the soil.
D- Water as the primary source of magical plants.
E. Rocks that may also contain algae.
F. Fertilized soil. Good for re-potting magical plants.
As soon as he was done, he too put his stuff inside his bag and waved at the professor. "Thanks for the lesson professor." With a quick nod and grin, he turned around and left for his next class.

So the lesson... had been a rather productive one, and now there was only one thing left for them to do. Hopefully there wouldn't be too many moans and groans, and if there were... too bad.
"Good, so I think we've identified most of a swamps functions, however I will just reiterate the six key points, for those of you taking notes." And they were all taking notes, weren't they.. mmhhmm. "The swamp is a haven for numerous organisms and is part of natures processes and cycles." Always remember the cycles. "It assists in controlling flooding, it preserves water, it's a source of food for humans and creatures alike. Swamps inhibit land erosion from rivers and oceans and it filters out pollutants." So all in all... it was an important ecosystem, yes? Yes.
"For the final part of our lesson, and to wrap up our case study... I would like you all to draw or sketch a diagram of the Weasley swamp and then annotate the parts that you deem to be significant in providing any one of the functions we've just discussed."
Pulling out a folded piece of parchment from her pocket, she held it up, tapped it with her wand and left it hovering in midair. "It should, resemble something like this... though really, yours should possess more detail." Hers was just an example, to model what annotating should look like and all...
OOC: LINK to the image, do NOT post it. You may use paint, photoshop or any other graphics program, you may hand draw and scan but do not under any circumstances google an image. Stick figures are cool with me, so long as they're original. The lesson will continue in 12 hours where I will dismiss you all, but you have 24 hours to complete the activity.
Sarah began to work, as she began to work on the picture before her. She looked at the swamp from every angle taking all the details. First she drew the swamp - it was to provide the base for her picture, then came the log and tall trees. The long grass came last... then as an added measure she began to add insects, urged on by a passing butterfly. See. this was nature at work. She then held the picture back to examine - not bad. She was happy at how it turned out - now the labeling. She added letters to the different spots, not knowing what else she whould add, the teacher had done 4 points - was 4 enough? Sarah hoped so. The C she wrote in Yellow yet all else was labled in black. She then wrote a brief function. True, it was not her best yet she hoped it would do. She gazed one more time at her picture

Sarah was just putting on finishing touches when the professor singnaled that it was time for dismissal. She was free to leave - that was great. Yay, greenhouse 6 was open, so that was another place Sarah had to discover. She decided to leave then as she wanted to head to the library to the part that they talked about ecosystems, all she knew about ecosystems she had gleaned from her mother's old 'natural science' textbook. Swamps sounded great - although they would be better if there were no crocodiles or poisonus snakes in it. "thank you professor for the lesson!" Sarah said. She then put her things away.

Alyssa quickly packed up her things into her backpack. Then she wondered over to the Weasley Swamp one more time. "It's good to have finally seen you. The Weasley side of the family will be happy to know that you still exist." Alyssa whispered to the swamp making sure that no one heard her.
Then she walked over to Professor Bentley. "Thank you for another interesting lesson Professor and for giving us a chance to see the swamp. It really is an awesome piece of magic." Alyssa told the Professor as she glanced over one more time at the swamp.
"Do you think that it would be hard to duplicate one...at home I mean?" Alyssa asked her Herbology Professor.

Seren paused briefly to take the opportunity to check the time on her pendant watch, and then continued. "Now we've identified numerous characteristics, but can anyone hazard a guess what type of magical plants are best known to inhabit swamps? Any ideas?"
Eliza considered this next question for a moment, after breathing a sigh of relief in the assurance there would be no giant swamp creatures trying to eat them today. Hmm types of magical plants that live in swampy places... Well gillyweed was already said. What about... She tapped her fingers against her robes in an useless effort to bring forth an idea. Nope, she just coudln't think of anything that hadn't already been said. Bummer, she thought to herself.

Now the last question before their activity... Seren checked her watch again to double check they were on time... good.
"So we know that there are numerous components of an ecosystem, and we've looked at the swamp ecosystem in some detail... but... can anyone hazard a guess as to what the function of the swamp ecosystem is?"
And yes, it had functions.
F-flesh eaters?? The second year took a small gulp, again glad that the Weasley Swamp didn't have any of those. So, swamps. Places I never really want to be, she noted to herself.
The function of a swamp ecosystem? Well lots of things right? To give homes to animals and plants that need that type of environment...and... She listened to some of the other things the students were saying and then raised her hand.
"I agree, one of the many functions of the swamp ecosystem is to help keep water in certain places for animals and plants that need it -which also helps move and keep water away from places that need to get rid of it. The water, I mean."That made sense to me anyway.

Eliza's ears perked up when she heard they would be drawing a sketch of the swamp. She loved to draw and actually already had a drawing pad with her in her bag. She opened to a blank page and started working on her sketch. This could take a little bit... she thought as she eyed the various plants in the swamp.

She'd been meandering, sneaking peeks over students' shoulders and inspecting their work as she passed. Seren was right behind Melody when she asked a question....
"I'm just inspecting. So long as you're all on the right track there's no need for me to go through them down to the very last detail." It was more for them than for her...

The class was over?
It couldn't be over, the Professor still hadn't given in and said they could play in the swam. That just didn't seem all that right. Would there be a next class where they could come and play with it?
"It was an interesting lesson Professor." She said, grabbing her bag and throwing it on. "Have a good day!" She took a final look at the swamp. Sigh. Such a pity.
Then she headed to her next class. On the bright side, she was already in the castle!

Ellura had been listening to the lesson the whole time yet preferring to stay quiet once more to simply pay attention to what was being said. She continued on with her notes, including the various properties of a swamp that usually existed. Trees, water, debris, creatures of various shapes and sizes, plant-life of course and everything in between.
When Professor Bentley moved them on to the final activity, the third year took out a fresh piece of parchment so she could draw like the woman wanted them to. Right...one swamp drawing complete with words describing the various parts coming up. It took some time and effort but eventually she had a work that she was satisfied with and willing to share with others. She just hoped she did what was expected of her.
At Professor Bentley's prompting, Ethan chose a spot opposite the swamp and sat down against the wall, pulling his messenger bag close to him. The sixth year pulled out his Herbology journal and a quill to set about sketching out the swamp. Working quickly but trying to provide as much detail as he could, the boy was soon finished with his sketch. He then labelled his drawing and detailed the information.
SPOILER!!: Annotations
A - Slow-moving, fresh water; murky, provides nutrients to plants and animals as well as a habitat for them
B - trees that have adapted to the wet conditions surround the water bank; control erosion as well as provide nutrients and habitat to support plant and animal life
C - surrounding shrubbery and tall grasses; helps to prevent erosion, provides shelter and nutrients to animal life
D - aquatic plant life; includes submerged, floating (lilypads, algae), and emergent (cattails); provide nutrients and shelter to animal life
E - Fallen logs - food source and habitat for animals, insects and plants
Once finished, he looked up from his sketch. was class finished already? Perhaps he spent longer on it than he thought.. Oh, and Greenhouse Six was open to students.. Grin. Packing up his things, Ethan rose from his seat on the floor and gave a nod to Bentley as he started to leave - though he was sure he'd come back to look at the swamp a little more later. "Bye, Professor.. Have a good day," he said as he walked past, a little more than eager to grab some lunch.

Catching Alyssa's question she shook her head. "Opportunity? When it's been here all this time." How was that even possible?
