Default The Courtyard

This square, stone area is the middleman between the castle and the grounds. Thick columns enclose this space, while elegant ivy creeps its way up the pillars. In the center, water plays merrily down a multi-tiered fountain, which provides a pleasant background for conversations. Whether it is a bench to sit on, a quiet place to study, or a hang out spot for friends, there are many ways students use this open-air location.

His shoes clicked and clacked against the stonework below, and to Patrick, the sound was mesmerizing. He listened as it bounced off the wall and echoed down the path, only to be drowned out by the next step he took. He listened to the gentle, barely audible scraping sound of his palm against the rough stone pillar, and in his mind, he examined the sound.

For Patrick, it wasn't an uncommon thing to fall into these 'trances'. He often got lost in his own mind, becoming very aware of the world around him, and taking note of even the most trivial things. Things that we all take for granted. Things that we don't really think about. He didn't think for a minute that anyone else ever payed any attention to the sound they heard when they ran their hand over a stone pillar. But when he lost himself like this, it was impossible for him not to.

Every time he passed a gap in the columns where one was expected to walk through into the courtyard proper, the silence was deafening. Every now and then, he would stop by these gaps and look into the courtyard, letting his mind wander. This particular time, instead of returning to his pacing, he took a few steps through the archway. Peering down at his feet, he traced the cracks in the mossy cobblestone path where it was assimilated by the grassy courtyard and vanished. With a deep breath, he looked up and around, noting the location of the nearest bench. It was occupied by someone, but that didn't necessarily mean he couldn't sit there.

"Is it alright if I sit here?" He asked, finally breaking free of his 'trance', finding himself in the real world once more. Interaction with other people had a way of clearing his head. The girl he spoke to appeared to be preoccupied with her drawing, and Patrick wasn't sure if she'd find his presence to be a distraction. She appeared so dedicated, and he certainly didn't want to spoil her concentration.

Giving a quick look around the courtyard, the sixth year finally thought of something. Drawing her attention back to the sketchbook, the girl started covering the first lines she had scribbled. Change of plan. She finally came up with a good idea for the sketch.

Scribble. Scribble. Scribble.

Hmmm. Gwendolyn continued to draw a few random lines on the nearly blank page of the sketchbook. After a while, the sixth year stopped to examine her drawing. For someone who didn’t know what she was drawing, the sketch probably looked like a lot of lines. Ehh. Though, the Ravenclaw had a plan in mind, and thought the drawing was coming out alright.

As she picked up the quill again, in order to continue the sketch, Gwen heard someone say something. When did that person get here?, the sixth year asked herself as she raised her eyes from the notebook and tracked down the source of the voice. Now the problem was- she hadn’t paid attention to what he was saying.

Errr…

‘Umm…yeah’, she eventually said, hoping that what he asked was if he could sit or something. Ugh. Gwen really had to start paying attention to what people were saying. Multitasking was generally something she could do, but not while she was drawing. Whenever she started a sketch, she was way too focused on the drawing. Hmm.

Patrick sat down on the bench next to the familiar girl with a wide smile on his face. He had seen her around a lot, seeing as they were in the same year and in the same house, and were bound to run into each other from time to time, but he had never really spoken to her. It made him feel a little sad to be honest. He had been there for six wonderful years, and next year would be his last at Hogwarts, and he hadn't started reaching out to more people until now?

Peering around the courtyard, his eyes were continuously drawn to the sketchbook in Gwen's hands. He opened his mouth to speak, but he stopped himself. He figured she was busy and probably didn't want to be disturbed. The urge to ask what she was drawing was overwhelming, but he kept his mouth shut. At least for the first minute.

"What are you drawing there?" He couldn't stop himself. His curiosity had gotten the better of him, like it often did. He was well aware that he shouldn't let that sort of thing happen, but sometimes he just couldn't help it.

Hmm… so he did ask if he could sit. Good. Awkward situation avoided, the sixth year thought as she glimpsed back at her sketch. Well… the measurements seem alright, the Ravenclaw told herself, and continued to scribble something on the page. Though, after she drew a few more lines, she got distracted, as she heard the person who was sitting next to her talk.

‘Hmm?’, Gwendolyn mused, drawing her attention away from the sketch. What was she drawing- ‘That part of the courtyard-’, she said, pointing with the quill to the columns. ‘-and this side of the fountain’ So practically what was in front of her.

It was only a moment after that, than Gwen realized she didn’t even know who the other student was. Truth be told, she was certain she had seen him around before. Hm. ‘I’m Gwen, by the way’, the sixth year finally introduced herself with a small smirk. And you are?

After the lake and her visit to Bartholomew Henry's lair, Kat made her way to the Courtyard. She'd been walking for almost an hour now and yet she still did not spot her asterism up there. Such ninjas. It was even more impossible to find it because the asterism was twin stars, two separate stars that looked like they were one. Couldn't this be much more complicated now? Kat sighed. She wasn't going to give up that easily though, no way.

The Slytherin went to stand in the middle of the Courtyard and looked up, squinting at the sky. Nope not from here either. She tried her luck with her binoculars. All she saw was a diamond asterism formed by other students. Puffers, to be exact. Yeah. But she saw their asterism but not hers. SIGHS again. Yep, probably another angle would make it easier. Sort of.

Location number 4 = Duck Pond. Meh.

Then the spectator would hand the magician a bag of sweets as a sort of gift at the end.

... Was this sort of the same thing?

Alec shook his head and grinned at Dora a little sheepishly. She didn't mind that he was sitting there right next to her, right? How else was he meant to get a great view of the magic show? And speaking of the show... his grey-blue eyes flitted down towards the flower and he grinned some more. "That's really awesome, you know. Well done, Dora!" Gentle!nudge. And she was planning on making it GLOW. Holy Superman! "I... how would you do something like that?"

... Oh. Right! Greeting! Duh, Summers! "Oh! Hey!" he said, looking back up at the girl, "Erm... you don't mind me joining you, right?" It would be a little awkward if the girl then went on to say that she did mind him sitting right there. ... He didn't think of that...
"It's not that awesome, I've been trying to get it to change to a fiery red and glow, but it's not happened yet." Dora wasn't too bothered by her inability to preform the spells to her satisfaction like she had been before. She had company now, and that was way better. She rubbed at her cheek and glanced back at the purple weed, shrugging her shoulders carelessly. "There's a charm for them both. I've done the color changing one before, but never the glowing." Her eyes turn back to him. "You don't know the spells?" Should she be surprised considering their charms professor?

When she was sure her face was back to it's normal shade, she grinned at him and moved her hand back to her lap. "No I don't mind at all. Unless you've got something else you wanted to do." If not he could change flower colors WITH her.

Patrick tilted his head slightly to the left, looking at Gwen's sketch and then up at the part of the courtyard she was drawing. Since she hadn't really filled in the details yet, he tried to match up the courtyard with the slightly vague shapes in the sketchbook. Patrick wasn't much of an artist in the traditional sense. If he was any good with any of the fine arts, it would have to be music, but he never really did much drawing these days. Still, he knew an artist when he saw one, and the way Gwen sketched out her drawing so intricately before even getting started on the details was more than enough evidence of her prowess with the quill.

"Oh yeah, I can see it.." He said, switching between looking over the courtyard in front of them and then back at the sketchbook. "I'm Patrick." He looked over to Gwen quickly, realizing just how rude he had been in not introducing himself. "It's nice to meet you, Gwen." He smiled, remembering to say her name to commit it to memory, just like his mama taught him. No more impoliteness here. No sirree.

‘Do you draw too?’, she asked randomly, not minding to look back at the other student. She was staring at the drawing, which still looked like a mess. Ehh- add a few more lines here, a few more lines there...

Hmm. Patrick. The Ravvie made a mental note of the name. Gwen was generally a disaster at remembering people’s names, but se would try to remember this one. ‘Nice to meet you too’, the sixth year said with a small smirk, raising her eyes from the sketchbook. ‘Umm... you are a Ravenclaw, right?’, she eventually asked. Well, she could be wrong, but she thought she had seen him around the Common Room. Anyway.

Gwendolyn drew her attention to the sketchbook, and continued to draw some more lines, which finally started looking like the columns in front of her. Before finishing the right part of the sketch, the girl started working on the rest of the drawing. Just to make sure that the measurements were right, Gwen glimpsed at the fountain, and then back at her drawing. Mhm. Looks fine, she thought and drew a few more lines.
. . .

After a while, the drawing was complete. ‘Done’, the sixth year said, more like to herself and then examined once again the sketch. Hmm. Gwen usually thought that her sketches had to be improved, but despite that it wasn’t perfect, she liked this one.

Smirk.

"Me? Draw?" Patrick sounded surprised that Gwen would even ask. "Not really, no. Not anymore." He said, shaking his head, his attention still focused on the sketch she was working on. He followed the quill as it traced the lines into the sketchbook, slowly creating an image of the Courtyard in front of them.
"Yup! Ravenclaw. You are too, I presume?" He replied to her other question, having noted earlier that he'd seen Gwen around the common room. He noticed a lot of faces in that room, but he rarely ever seemed to talk to anyone. As much as he would like to, it just didn't really happen.

"That's quite good." Patrick said, looking from the drawing to the courtyard in front of them. He payed close attention to the most prevalent objects in the drawing, such as the fountain. "Loads better than anything I ever did back in the day." He chuckled. "Looooads!" He added, grinning.
