When you first enter the Muggle Studies classroom, you can instantly hear National Anthems and Marches from all over the world playing softly in the background. There are a variety of national flags hanging from the rafters and a soft breeze has been charmed to blow the flags slightly occasionally. Around the room are campaign posters, both Muggle and Wizards, from centuries in the past.
Professor Cerulean is at the front of the classroom flipping through a Muggle magazine looking up occasionally watching students enter the classroom. On the board is a simple greeting,
"Welcome to Muggle Studies and get ready to Rock the Vote!"
On each desk, there is glass of red and blue layered jello with whipped cream and a white spoon. Beside the glass, is a cup of cherry Muggle kool-aid.
Come in and have a bite and wait for class to get started!
OOC: Class will start later this evening! Come in, have a seat and a bite, and start some conversations. See you in a lil while.
Oichi raised her hand and responded, "There was the 2008 election in the US where Barak Obama promised hope and change. That sort of thing sounds great to young people even of they don't know what the hope and change entailed.".

She rolled her eyes at West's input. It was so NOT true. Not everyone under the age of 17 could be easily bought by shiny things or sugary treats. Granted she could easily be wooed by anyone who waved a chocolate frog in her direction but there were others, others who knew better and could take things like this very seriously.
Lottie had a good head on her shoulders and so did Dora! ...Cassia might...but not really. There were many ways in which the two were alike and being bribed easily was one of them! Chocolate was good stuff, okay???
And now the professor was asking about more elections. She might have gone silent again but then she heard the word locally and her hand shot up.
"Oo! Oo! Professor! There was this one time, back at my old muggle school," Because she went to one of those, "where we were having student body elections and this kid in the class above mine promised us skips in the lunch line and chocolate fountains! He was targeting the young people obviously and he won...but...but there was no chocolate fountains and they started handing out detentions for anyone who skipped in the lines because they said it was becoming excessive..."
Perfect example of a wasted vote right there...
Wait...was that what she meant by local...? Hmmmm...

Amelia smiled when they were asked about different elections. "Well, if you think back on the 2012 election in Paris France the elected President ran on a campaign saying he would ban homework in France." She offered a look of whimsy playing about her face as she spoke. "Though it was more because as he said, that there were student age children who do not have people available to help her with homework." She smiled over to him softly.

Peyton raised her hand even though she didn't know how she was going to word this. She just wanted to share stuff and she really did have something to share. And she liked telling stories about Mr. Walker because he was cool.
"The mayor I mention earlier - Mr. Walker," she added so there wouldn't be any confusion. "He promised to fix this large pothole in our town that was in the main intersection of it and people seemed happy with that." That and she really didn't pay any attention to what else he had said. She'd fallen asleep. "So he got a lot of people on his side as well as votes." Not exactly, but Peyton decided that was it. "It was like, happy people equal more votes." And she had just come up with that right now.

"There was a candidate in the 2012 U.S. Presidential election that chose a younger guy for his Vice Presidental running mate, then had the guy going around telling people all the things he had in common with the younger generation to try and get their votes. It didn't work, though. Think his name was...... Mitt Romney?" Sky answered. She had always thought that was stupid. But then, people could be pretty stupid sometimes. Obviously, by some of her classmates answers.

Sierra raised her eyebrows at the story the professor told. People really believed that guy?! Were they all Puffers or something? She shook her head in disbelief and then raised her hand. "I think parental influence has a lot to do with it," she said. "Take my father for instance. A lot of his friends and acquaintances are politicians. The professor raised her eyebrows at the boy's answer and his suggestion, "That's a great idea...maybe you should speak with the Headmistress about your idea...I can see lots of benefits with your idea for both students and the Governor members...." she said with a little nod up and down approvingly.
The professor listened intently to all of the student's answers and then when things died down a little bit she replied, "You all have great reasoning behind your answers. I'm very impressed that some of you thought out of the normal ages and even considered the maturity of some of the younger students. You all had great answers and great ideas to back your age idea." she said with a smile as she walked over to a string and pulled on it. "As a couple of you mentioned, the Board of Governor elections are important but are not near as intense and as important as a national election, so the age of people being allowed to vote in a national election is usually set older."
When she pulled, a screen came down from the ceiling and hung behind her head, "Now some of you mentioned that students needed to be older so that were mature enough to not fall for simple items from candidates such as candy and other things that can be used to buy their votes. There have been lots of campaigns in history where the candidates have shaped their campaign and platforms to attract the younger voters, because they realize that they are young and impressionable." she paused hoping that what she was saying made sense.

What was some things that people did to get votes? Like campaigning? Is that what she meant? Because she wasn't being very clear and Selina was almost certain that was what she implied, but then she went off into another bit of, you know, story time. Wait, so then... what WAS the exact question?
Okay... she was just going to answer her the way that she thought she needed to answer, "Well, ma'am, I suppose that, you know, you could always get a public figure who is influential to younger people to back the candidate. People are usually flowers." What? It was true.

OOC: Thanks Roro! And I'm sorry I missed those comments...my hubby and I were on a date last night so I didn't get to check before bed.
Yes, what she said and what I mentioned in the first few posts of the lesson. We want to keep all negative comments about other parties (ie. Democrat, Republican, etc) and inappropriate topics (like race, religion, sexuality, violence, and so on) should be avoided. This is just a lesson for fun and I encourage answers, even those made up as long as we follow the rules.
Thanks everyone! I do love you all!

The professor smiled at the Slytherin, "Great example Sierra! Yes, many politicians rely on appealing to the parents of younger voters because there's a study that found that 84% of younger voters will vote the same way their parents vote."

"Yes, great example. This is something that has been seen many times in history. If you are older, choose someone that is hip and younger to be on your side and even possibly run with you...some people will vote for someone for the oddest reasons." she said with a thumbs up at the girl.

"Well, it wasn't exactly an election...but an uprising sort of thing. When Voldemort was trying to come to power again, he appealed to troubled people by making them feel like they would be a part of something bigger than themselves. He made them feel like they would have a fellowship and protection in their group. So that's sort of like a politician promising groups of people things that he or she knows they really want." She felt sorry for some of those people who joined as Death Eaters. They couldn't all have been that bad, could they? Maybe some of them just got caught up in it, or felt like they had no choice. She hoped after that was all over that those types of people were able to get away and change their lives. This lesson was becoming sort of a downer in her mind, even though she really thought the professor meant it to be motivational. What will the candidates in the room think of everything we're saying? Are they offended by us picking apart how elections happen? She didn't think anyone meant any harm to their personal efforts, so she hoped they would be okay.

She snapped her fingers and the screen above her lit up with the words Board of Governor Elections. Slowly the pictures of each Candidate appeared on the screen with their names underneath.
As they played, she continued, "It is very important that we understand that we should always do research on those that we are voting for or supporting, even as a younger demographic." she paused and waited for the next few pictures to pass, "We have a Board of Governors election coming up and these are our candidates for election onto this board that helps ensure the success and future of Hogwarts...some of them may be familiar to some of you and then some may be new faces...but it's important that we keep track of what is real and what is false about each candidate."
She let the pictures finish and then she continued, "As you know, there is a debate being held in Hogsmeade by Hogwarts that many of you have been elected to the Committee and have been working hard to put together. During the debate, each candidate is going to be asked a few questions about what is important to them and what they plan to do as members of the Board."
Pausing, she walked towards the board and flipped it so it was clean, "So think about how important Hogwarts is to you and maybe some of the issues or great things you see at Hogwarts, if you were the Master of Ceremony at the Debate, what questions would you like to ask the Candidates for the Board of Governors?" she asked as she wrote the word Questions and underlined it on the board.

What would West ask? He thought about it.
And kept thinking about it.
He stuck his hand up. "First I would ask a two part question, firstly why did you want to run for the board, and secondly if you care as much as you say you do --cos you know probably they'll say junk about how they care SO MUCH about our futures and stuff-- why didn't you run before?" Because it would be interesting to see how many people were just like following a whim or something. "And for the ones that aren't even from here, I would ask why Hogwarts? Why not a school what they went to, or that is close to where they grew up or whatever."
But the MOST important ones, cos he had more ideas, "I'd ask them which candidate they would vote for, not including themselves, if they could, and then I'd ask them why someone should NOT elect them to see how honest they are."
West was all about the tricksy questions really.
And to address the previous question he added, "You know what I think, people don't give us kids enough credit if they try to appeal to us in crazy ways, sometimes its just that we want them to be honest and not talk down to us."

Sierra raised her hand. "Professor Cerulean, I've noticed that some of the candidates have shown up in our classes this year," she said. A look of confusion spread across her face. "I'm confused, though. How can a person with no qualifications to be an educator...or maybe even no qualifications for that subject...hold a position where they can grade, or observe, someone with those qualifications? That's what I'd like to ask them. I want to know if they consider themselves prepared and qualified to do that, and if so, how are they qualified."
Laura looked at the Professor and smiled. "I would ask them a two part question, Why should we trust them to run the school." Laura smiled she loved that part. "And what would they bring to the table if they were voted for." Laura really didn't like these debates that took forever to do they got boring.

Alyssa thought for a moment before raising her hand. "Professor during President Obama's campaign he reached out to the younger generation by reminding them that if they wanted change, they needed to be more involved in the voting process. He said that whatever change that was going to happen wouldn't happen overnight. Because change does takes time to happen. So whatever change that does happen would most likely occur during their lifetime and affect their generation more." Alyssa paused to think what else Obama had done.
Then she remembered. "President Obama also made a several references to his two young teenage daughters during his campaign speeches. He would tell the people that he would spend time talking with his daughters and asking for their opinions. He was trying to show the younger generation that he was in-tuned with what was going on with the people of their generation. He was aware of what they wanted in life and what they were believed in. He wanted to remind them that their voices were not unheard."

West blinked at the older girl, not sure if he was supposed to stick his hand up if he was addressing another student but he did anyways.
"Lyssie," Cos that was what he was gonna call her, he had decided, "The Board of Governors isn't new its always been part of how the school has worked." Paaause, "And I dunno if I'd say the last 100 years have been that well run, or unbroken. Lots of kids have died over the years and there's been lots of accidents and dangerous things happening and even on a simple level, lots of times where classes haven't run and stuff and that like, interrupts our educations and everything. I mean, even as recent as last year two professors got ate by a plant, right? Do you know what they are supposed to do? The Board I mean." He peeked at the professor, hoping she didn't mind him speaking up, but it was something he'd noticed. Lots of kids didn't seem to get what the point was.
"It sounds like lots of people don't even know what they are for." Back talking to Alyssa, an earnest look on his face. "They are the ones that make sure that we're safe, our parents can write to them and complain about things, they are who hold headmasters and headmistresses accountable and can fire them and stuff if things go bad, and they can get rid of professors that don't do their jobs properly too. Ummm and I think they can influence the curriculum too? And ban some subjects and stuff but I'm not sure about all that stuff." Maybe Cerulean would know that part?

"You must have misunderstood what I was trying to say. Yes I get why they are needed and I agree that there needs to be some oversight especially when it comes to the safety of the children...and worse yet...the interruption of the classes while they are in session. And yes the Headmaster and Headmistress should be held accountable for the events that have been happening here recently. But it's not entirely their fault either. If they knew what was going to happen, they surely would have prevented it from happening."
Alyssa paused trying to find the right words to put across her point. "My worry is what is stopping them from firing a Professor just because they don't like their method of teaching? I mean we do have some Professors whose teaching is a little unorthodox but that doesn't mean that we're not learning from them."
"Remember in the days of Harry Potter. Where the Ministry appointed Dolores Umbridge as High Inquisitor. She fired staff and passed decrees that were ridiculous and everyone ending up rebelling. And of course we don't need another Malfoy situation where the Board of Governor favored the house their child was in over the others.
We need to make sure that the whoever is picked to be on the Board of Governors is a fair and at the same time open minded. That's all I'm suggesting."
There that was a friendly debate of sharing of ideas.
Peyton thought about what Professor Cerulean asked. She would originally ask if they were planning on anything Quidditch related - positive things, of course - or the improvement of lessening homework, or in changing classroom rules and allowing them to take snacks, but she knew this was a bit more serious. Peyton didn't do good with serious stuff. She didn't like.
The third year took some time to think about this. What concerned her about this school that was important enough to mention? She heard several good ideas, but she was concerned about her safety and her staying alive.
Peyton raised her hand. "I would ask what they would do to increase security here," she said. "I mean, Hogwarts feels safe, but after events like last term's you get that feeling that things could go wrong at anytime." Her dad had told her about what happened and - though it didn't waver her on coming here - Peyton slept with her wand under her pillow, her beater's bat next to her and with a glowing little bunny figure her mother had made her.

"Well its a committee right? I'm sure just one person what doesn't like a professor can't do anything. And like they don't take it on themselves it'd be more like if a parent wrote a letter to complain or something and," West paused, "Actually I think I remember reading something about that with Professor Lafay, that was how she got to be Slytherin head of house like a billion years ago," Because well, they were all old, "Because a bunch parents didn't like that a criminal was the head of house for their kids, so she replaced Truebridge." For example.
And by Truebridge West meant the other one. That man one. He listened to the other stuff but didn't bother saying that the Board wasn't ministry appointed. School stuff was historically weird when the Ministry was involved right?
"Maybe there should be a rule about that stuff then. Like that people can't be on the board if they have family members enrolled here. Or working here. Or anything what might be --whats it called ,oh!-- a conflict of interest." Nod nod.
Him and Alyssa had the BEST ideas about things, clearly.

Sky had to admit it. That question had lost her. As in, she had no idea what to ask the candidates. She knew what not to ask, however. But instead of speaking these thoughts out loud, she decided to bask in the glory of having gotten a thumbs up. Though she did gave a smile and slight look towards her aunt as said woman's picture flash on the screen.

Are they going to change the current rules and disturb what has been running so well for the last 100 years?Like you know the saying...if it ain't broke don't fix it?" Alyssa paused to think.
"And I would also like to know why now. Why is there a need to have a Board of Governors present in the school? Things have happened in the past, but they got resolved, so why do they feel the need to have them here now?"

"They are the ones that make sure that we're safe, our parents can write to them and complain about things, they are who hold headmasters and headmistresses accountable and can fire them and stuff if things go bad, and they can get rid of professors that don't do their jobs properly too. Roxanne was listening intently to the flow of questions and answers as the class went on, deeply impressed both by the professor's method of teaching and the intellect of the students. Until a debate sprung up between two of the students, that was. The reference to Umbrige was made. Feeling the need to step in and say something while hoping she wasn't overstepping boundaries, she stood up and gave the the girl that had made the reference a kind smile. "I'm sorry, dear, but I think I speak for all of my fellow candidates when I say that we have learned from that particular incident of the past, and have no intention of acting like that woman. Nor do we have any intention of firing any professor that we feel is doing a good job, no matter their teaching style." At least, she hoped that was the case. She knew, in any case, that was certainly not in her plans.
She just barely managed not to glare at the boy for his 'conflict of interest' comment as she sat back down, though. Honestly, how did THAT help anything?!

Okay, so it seemed that Odessa was every bit of brilliant as he was logical. He made a lot of really poignant points. The kid was brilliant. Um, why was he in Slytherin? Of course, if ANY of the snakes even knew she was contemplating West's aptitude for Ravenclaw she'd have a riot at her heels. So instead she just opted to sort of watch him as he held his own.
Finally, she decided that she should at least answer the question so that Cerulean didn't think she wasn't paying attention. And THEN she could go back to watching West and Alyssa politely discuss their views. So she rose her hand and answered, "Ma'am, I'd ask them what's their motive? Why is it SO important that they're on the board?" Because every politician had a motive. Glory, money, etc.
Except for James Bond. The thought made her blush. He was just doing this for the GOOD of the school. The only honest one out of all them.
Rachel thought about Professor Cerulean's question. She would like to ask them so many things that she could not come up with one at the moment.
Taking a deep breath with the intention of organizing her thoughts, the girl stared at the board until a simple answer came to her mind.
- Well, I think I would ask what their priorities would be and why - said Rachel, after raising her hand - I think this is really important because it shows exactly what they have interest in.
Alyssa was surprised when West addressed his answer to her. She listened as he explained why the Board of Governors was being set up. She nodded in agreement with some of the things that he said.

Gemma looked from one student to the next like she was at a tennis match and was just about to interject when one of the actual Board of Governor Candidates spoke up, she shut her mouth for a second and let the woman talk and then she added, "I appreciate both of yours' opinions, but I think there are a couple of things that need to be addressed, in addition to the firing comments." she said smiling and walking a little bit closer to the students...she wasn't angry at all and was her usual self...she knew that the students just didn't fully understand the Board of Governors, "The Board of Governors is alot like a School Board in many muggle schools. They are set up to help make sure that the community's opinion is taken into account when making decisions for the students and Hogwarts. They are evaluating our classes to make sure that we are covering and teaching appropriately for everyone...if we aren't they are simply going to give us input on how to improve...from what I understand they are here to observe and learn like ya'll are." she said glancing at the members in the classroom for reassurance...and honestly that's what she thought they were there for...
She continued, "And I think it's important that we get a good blend of people on the Board. It's important for us to get individuals in the business side of the wizarding world to insure we are preparing ya'll for a future in the big world, but it is also important that we get members of the community that have or have recently had students in Hogwarts. These individuals fully understand the role of Hogwarts and the effects that those decisions directly have on the students and the community. I don't see it as a bias but more of an advantage that they have an ear in Hogwarts...kind of like little spies keeping them up to date on things that are important to the students..." she paused with a smile and then said, "But really the Board is set in place to insure that we are preparing ya'll for a successful future and that can be making decisions about finances, classes or curriculum, leadership, etc...but trust me they don't have ultimate power...they listen to the constituents or the people they represent which would be you and your parents..." she hoped that made sense...it did in her head atleast but she knew sometimes when she said things outloud they became jumbled.
She glanced back at the class, "Anyone else have any questions they would want the Candidates to answer?"

West just nodded. He knew that. All of that. Basically he reckoned that Candidate lady and the professor just confirmed everything he said. And if they didn't think that they had then probably they missed his points. 'cept that candidate lady who seemed to think that Umbridge had been on the Board of Governors when she hadn't. That was probably why she was in Muggle Studies and not History of Magic though.
But Alyssa understood now right? She seemed REAL worried that a professor could just get kicked out with a snap of someone's fingers, but West figured it was a board for a reason, on account of they had to look at all sides and angles and investigate things.
His nose was itchy.

West blinked at the older girl, not sure if he was supposed to stick his hand up if he was addressing another student but he did anyways.

Oichi turned to one of the boys in her class whose points seemed rather interesting, "Well politics is usually like that. The candidate does not want anyone to know their actual agenda so they stretch the truth till its pretty much a web of lies. You gotta dig deep to find the truth about anything in politics. Also I know a lot of crazy things happened last year at Hogwarts but would a governing body at Hogwarts really make things better. It did not during Harry Potter's days at Hogwarts. I hope this one is not too corrupt. I wonder, what is the Ministry's agenda with this besides to make the school safer.".
Oichi then thought for a moment about the professor's question and came up with an answer, "I would like to ask the Board of Governors Candidates what their overall responsibilities will be at Hogwarts besides protecting the school and the students it.".

Merlin's soggy socks, these people talked too much. West and Alyssa, specifically. Milton was hardly paying attention in the first place, but when they started to debate with each other, Milton totally zoned out and stared off in space, probably thinking about what he was going to eat for lunch. Because lunch was more important than... anything, basically.
But when the professor spoke again, Milton started paying attention because this was kind of important. And he needed good grades for quidditch, so, bleh. Participation.
Milton raised his hand lazily. "I'd ask them if they'll give us free food." Because Milton would definitely vote for them if they did. But, on a more serious note... "I would also ask them what they have done to deserve it. Like, what have they done that makes them better than anyone else." A comparison to the other candidates, basically.
