Winter had announced its presence on the Quidditch pitch; the previous night's snowfall left a fresh blanket of snow. The day's cloudy skies and below freezing temperatures did not help Professor James in the melting of the snow around the stands, but surely the patches she had missed along the way in a few sections wouldn't be a problem for the plethora of spectators. Probably.

As she stood in the center of the pitch, her broom in hand, she directed her wand toward her neck and spoke to the stands, "Welcome to the second match of the term - Slytherin versus Hufflepuff! It's going to be quite the showdown, so without further ado, let's welcome the teams to the pitch!"

The gates opened at both ends of the stadium and a blur of emerald and goldenrod ensued as the two teams took their fifteen minutes of practice. During that time, Professor James reviewed the team rosters, gave each player a mark of approval, and beamed up at the players.

It was going to be a good one.

A whistle-blow signaled the teams to take their places. James released the bludger, followed by the snitch, then enunciated clearly only to the players, "Play a clean game, play by the rules, show good sportsmanship - remember, you are role models whether you like it or not." That was the truth, really. This time, she brought her wand up to her neck and spoke, "On my whistle. Three... two... one... TWEET!"

The quaffle is caught by Hufflepuff's eager Kaiden Yarborough who twists to avoid the grabbing hands of Richard Turner and takes off down the pitch. Small-but-mighty West Odessa charges from behind, tapping the quaffle out from under the Hufflepuff's arm and into the air, but Yarborough reacts with swift reflexes and holds tightly to the quaffle! He gains speed, approaches the goal posts, he shoots... DING! Kaiden Yarborough scores the first points of the game for Hufflepuff!

Slytherin Keeper Katrina Hudson retrieves the quaffle and puts it back into play. Her throw is received by an angry West Odessa, irritated that the newbie Hufflepuff Yarborough had scored already. He takes off down the pitch and passes the quaffle right over the head of Hufflepuff Beater Alyssa Potter; his pass is caught by Richard Turner, who quickly relays the ball to the third Chaser of their mighty trio, Theodore Kinsley, who had lined himself up nicely by the goalposts. Kinsley doesn't even hesitate and sends the quaffle soaring toward the left hoop... DING! The quaffle slips through a disappointed Keeper Ella Bishop's fingers!

Bishop launches the quaffle toward her teammates; the ball is caught by Lotus Wisteria, who hesitates for a moment before finding Yarborough open for a pass. As Slytherin's Turner tries to make a steal, Wisteria throws the quaffle to Yarborough. As the terrifying team of Odessa and Kinsley gang up on Yarborough and fly directly at him, the Hufflepuff Chaser throws the quaffle to Captain Renesmee Dixon, who aims, shoots... DING! Dixon scores for Hufflepuff!

As Katrina Hudson puts the quaffle back into play, a glint of gold can be seen just near the tail of her broomstick...

Keeper Hudson's pass is caught by Richard Turner, who is forced to dive to avoid the oncoming attempted tackle of Hufflepuff's Dixon. Turner passes easily to Kinsley, just as the Slytherin Beaters team up and charge a bludger - Baltazar and Tillstorm wind up, and Tillstorm's bat connects! The bludger soars straight for a distracted Ella Bishop, who had been anticipating Kinsley's shot, and hits its target! As the Hufflepuff Keeper falls toward the ground, Theo Kinsley shoots and DING! He scores with ease, but the corners of his mouth falter as he realizes his friend is spiraling down toward the snow below...
