Default Flying Basics

On a cloudy, windless day, a slightly perturbed Professor James stood in the middle of the practice pitch between two long lines of school broomsticks in the grass. She was eyeing the brooms with apprehension; she had tested out a few of them for safety, but were all of the school brooms really reliable? Stop worrying, Erin. Surely Professor Vindictus would have disposed of any broomsticks that had given anyone trouble in the past, right? The students would be fine - but she did make a mental note to work on improving the school broomsticks for the following term. These students deserved better. Even if the brooms flew fine, the appearance mattered, too, didn't it? The kids needed to be able to trust the brooms.

With one hand clung to the shiny silver whistle around her neck and the other rested anxiously on her waist, James awaited the arrival of bright new faces who were eager to learn.

OOC: This class is going to cover the basics of flying; in other words, this is a class for first years and those who wish to brush up on their flying skills. More advanced flyers are by no means required to attend. Please review the classroom rules before posting in this thread!

"One thing I do want to stress on is that flying is not just a form of transportation - it's supposed to be fun, too!" she spoke in the direction of a Hufflepuff girl who appeared as though she thought the broomstick was going to leap up and bite her. "This isn't just a class or something you have to learn to do - flying SHOULD be an enjoyable skill to learn!"

The fear of heights was understandably a burden for many - and the fear of falling - but it didn't have to be as scary as many made it out to be in their minds. "For those of you who are a bit apprehensive, feel free to work at your own pace throughout the lesson - we don't want any accidents." Since it was her first class, Professor James figured it probably wouldn't look too good to the adults observing if students were crashing into each other left and right.

"An important aspect of flying, as a few suggested, is trusting your broomstick and showing confidence, even if you have very little. On my mark, please stick your right hand out over the broomstick, palm down," she demonstrated, "and envision the broom entering your hand. See it happen. Show confidence in your whole demeanor - want the broom to come to you, then tell it to come to you by commanding, 'Up!' Then grasp the handle when it comes to you. It might take a few tries, do not be discouraged - be calm, patient, and persistent. You can do it." She offered a smile of encouragement to those who seemed less than convinced. "Please begin!"

OOC: To those who were not around for the previous question, feel free to answer it before continuing along with the instructions in this post!
When the Professor asked the first question of a tip for a broomstick, Belle remembered this tip. "Professor i learned if you lean back on the broomstick you can slow down on your acceleration and if you lean forward you can increase it." She nodded and knew it.

Then she asked to do the simple task. Belle smiled and remembered doing it in her first year. Belle needed to be patient and calm. Belle slowly let out a relaxing breath. Belle even went to the broom cupboard to get a broom. After she placed it down, she used her concentration and said, "UP!" and the broom only went up a little bit. Hmmm...maybe the school brooms are difunctional. Belle loved her broom back in her room better. She forgot to bring it.

Then she tried again and said, "Up!" with more force and then the broom flew up to her hand! Woot Woot!

Nigel stood next to his standard school broom and put his hand out and said "UP". Th broom sailed up into his hand just like it was suppose to. Maybe it senses his confidence and knew it was going to fly soon.

Well he had the broom in his hand. So now all he had to do was wait for Professor James to let them fly. Which of course was the best part.

Minerva listened to all the great answers. Then professor J started to speak and talk about the next step. Min was glad she came to class getting a refresher was always a good idea. Watching as others started she glanced at Susan. "you'll do great"

Standing next to her own broom Minerva smiled and held out her hand. "up" the broom flew up to her hand and she gripped it. Looking back up she waited for the next step.

Yes, yes - the students certainly had a grasp on many of the ideas and concepts necessary to fly well. Professor James was not entirely sure whether Captain Dixon had been referring to a beater's bat or a bat with wings, but it was a wise tip either way. "Superb! Points for your answers," she chimed merrily.

As the students began the task, Professor James moseyed up and down the pathway between the two rows, offering a knowing nod and smile to the students who had little trouble with the current assignment. "Remember to be confident," she advised the ones who were having a tough time. "This exercise is meant to establish a mutual connection between you and your broomstick. Don't yell at it, but show it who's boss. Relax, breathe, and make it come to you."

Out of the corner of her eye, Professor James kept watch of the three Board of Governors candidates on the pitch. They were making her nervous only because she was concerned that they might be making the new flyers anxious. For many of them, the thought of flying was scary enough; surely having an audience was not going to make it any easier.

Regardless, James swiftly clapped her hands four times, both to praise the students and get their attention. She picked up a spare school broomstick and held it out for them to see. "Before we take flight, I want you to take note of a few things. First, these school brooms may be old, but do not doubt them - they are mighty fine instruments. Brooms have personalities of their own and in many cases, they are capable of syncing with their riders. That is why it is important to carry out the 'Up!' exercise with an unfamiliar broom; you are forming a bond with it that is generally already there when you have your own broomstick. A broom's capability is determined by its rider."

She twisted the broomstick so that the tail was facing toward the ground. "Once you have your broomstick in your hands, hold it parallel to the grass and mount it like so," she demonstrated by kicking one leg over the broomstick. "Angle the tail toward the ground as you do so. If you're a bit nervous about discomfort, remember that brooms have cushioning charms - once we take flight, you'll find that it's not as bad as you'd think." She even went through and checked all the cushioning charms to make sure they had not worn off over the years before the term began, just to be sure.

"As your classmates noted earlier, grip is important - please place your dominant hand above the other on the broom handle. For right-handed flyers like myself, grasp the handle with your right hand then follow up with your left hand underneath. The opposite goes for those of you who are left-handed." Professor James observed the students' grips as she spoke, "A relaxed grip is crucial; tension will make you prone to crashes. Your dominant hand is on top to control steering - your broom will respond to the slightest movements." Well, at least a new, proper broom would. But she didn't mention that. It was better to have the students use subtle movements than overcompensate and go flying into one another.

"Now, to become airbourne - not now, on my mark - you will gently kick off the ground like so," she demonstrated, hovering a few feet above the ground. "To land, gently nudge the broomstick handle downward - the more gentle you are, the slower and more carefully you will descend." She landed nicely, dismounted her broomstick, and surveyed the class once more with a bright smile. "On my whistle, I would like you to kick off the ground gently, hover for a moment, then carefully return to the ground. No joy rides just yet - get a feel for the broom and how sensitive it is. It will respond to the slightest guidance of the handle. Got it?"

Before bringing the whistle up to her lips, she gave pointed looks to a few of the older kids as if to say, Be patient. You'll get to fly in a moment. She followed the look up with a knowing grin, sharing their anticipation, and blew the whistle with a quick TWEET!

Tay held her hand over the broom, "Up." She hated this part just because she wanted to just start flying... Taylor LOVED to fly... being a reserve on the quidditich team all three years she had been here... hopefully this one would be fourth. Taylor grasped the handle and waited for the teacher to tell them to push off.

Despite the fact that Alyssa knew how to fly, with the new students present, she decided that she would show respect for the Professor and do exactly as she had directed the beginners to do. With the broomstick in her hand, she manoeuvred it until she was holding it parallel with the ground. Then she mounted it. She felt her heart beat faster because soon she was going to be airborne and flying.

Angling the tail of the broomstick as the Professor instructed, she placed her right hand above her left hand on the broom handle. She made sure that she had a good grip on the handle but that her hands were relaxed.

Now for kick off!!

Once the Professor blew her whistle, Alyssa gently kicked off the ground with her foot and soon she was slowly hovering a few feet off the ground. She would have loved to fly away but she knew that she has to demonstrate knowing how to land.

So she slowly leaned forward on her broomstick and tilting the handle downwards, she slowly descended until her feet touched the ground again.

Ella smiled at Professor James as she instructed them, noting that she was doing a really good job of explaining things to the inexperienced fliers. The blonde wasn't so sure she'd ever be cutout for teaching, she wasn't at all good with words the way James was...or well lots of the Professors, for that matter.

Following the instructions carefully, Ella gripped her wand with her right hand first followed by her left. She smiled a little before mounting, excited to have a chance to kick off from the ground. Even just hovering sounded really good at this point.

On the whistle, the blonde kicked off gently, grinning like mad as she hovered in the air for a few moments. Yes, it was SO good to be flying again. She'd really missed this. Really. The fifteen year old then carefully moved the handle downwards again, feet hitting the ground. She looked around and gave the younger kids encouraging smiles. See? It wasn't so bad after all.

All of them were good suggestions? Some of them sounded like sissy loser suggestions. Though, he was keen on this whole biting thing, as long as he didn't get bit. Kaiden nodded enthusiastically when the professor said flying was fun. Of course it's fun, what was the point of flying if it wan't fun.

Trusting your broomstick. The boy looked down at the broomstick at his feet. He was supposed to trust and have confidence in this school broom? It looked older than he was. Obediently he stuck his hand out over the broom, and ordered it to him. UP. unfortunately the broom didn't move towards him at all.

Ugh, that stupid school broom. He balled his hand into a fist before letting it go flat again, and commanding it up once more with a little more authority. "Up". This time, it rose smoothly to his hand where he gripped it tightly.

He looked down at it. Old was an understatement. The brooms were like probably older than the professor. Though, when they were allowed to mount the brooms, he did so eagerly. He listened half heartedly to how to grip the broom, and how to kick off and land. They were things he already knew. He just paid attention to what and when he was supposed to be doing. As soon as Professor James blew the whistle, Kaiden kicked off, and then quickly landed, itching to do some real flying.

McCall took in a deep breath as she looked down at the broom. "Up," she said. The broom did not move. Maybe she needed to be more firm? Her own broom at home understood her perfectly. "Up!" she repeated, with a little bit more authority. The broom flew up into her hand. She smiled as she mounted the broom and gently kicked off the ground when the professor blew her whistle.

As she hovered gently, she had the urge to keep flying, to circle around the pitch and feel the wind in her hair. She wanted more than anything to fly, but it wasn't time for that yet. After a few more seconds of enjoying herself, she guided the broom back down to the ground and dismounted.

Alice once again nervously looked at the broom but felt more relaxed than when they had originally started. Maybe it was the Professor's words of trusting the broom and fact that they were in sync but shyly she threw her tiny leg over the broom stick. With her right hand above and her left underneath, she released a shaky sigh. There was no need to worry right? It's just a simple push off the ground, like jumping form a four foot tall brick wall or being thrown from a low branch to a nice soft mound of leaves in the fall. I mean, surely somebody could save her if anything goes wrong, not that anything will, but you know, just in case, anything is possible at Hogwarts.

Alice had been getting herself comfortable on the broom when the whistle had been blown. Startled, she kicked off, eyes scrunched together and legs crossed loosely at the ankle. After awhile of slight shivering she noticed the lack of excruciating pain and the taste of grass. Hesitantly she open her eyes and noticed she was in fact hovering! She was just a foot off the ground but who cares!

"C-Cool!" she giggled.

This was something she could get use to.

Alice extended her right hand over the broom, speaking as she did so. "UP. A grin appeared on her face as it immediately flew into her hand. She had missed this. The lioness tried four or five more times before trying it without speaking. Up. Yes! Good broom. This was so much easier to excel at for her than Herbology. And Divination. And Runes. And..

AHEM. So they were flying now?

The lioness moved her broom horizontally as the Professor directed, throwing a leg over it bouncing a little on it. She was EXCITED. Kick off time? She thought so. On the whistle, alice's shoes bounced off the ground. OH. Oh, she could see the top of the Professor lady's head up there! That was pretty cool, mmhmm, the best. She was loving being in the air again so much that she couldn't manage to wipe that goofy grin off her face.

After a couple of seconds, she landed again and beamed at the ickle ones encouragingly. Flying was FUN, see?

Mo positioned himself near a broom before circling around to another broom nearby. No offense to the broom or anything, but he was sort of particular that a broom feel right, and that one there had seemed very unfriendly to him. This one was better. He stooped briefly to pat the tail twigs and otherwise preened over the broom before resuming his spot beside it.

At the professor's instruction, Mo held out his hand and demanded, "Up." Nothing. Not a single response.

Had he offended the broom? What was wrong with it?

"Up, please," he tried in a more moderate tone, and the broom snapped up into Mo's hand. "That's better. Don't be unfriendly, and I'll do my best not to crash you, mmk?"

Seemed like a fair trade.

As he waited on his classmates, Mo nearly vibrated as he waited for the first indication that he could climb onto his broom and actually fly. He was getting better all the time, and Mo felt pretty confident he wouldn't do anything to embarrass himself (or West or Vivi). The professor gave the nod, and Mo threw a leg over the broom and launched himself in the air a bit too quickly. He fishtailed in place before finding his balance and grinned ruefully at his hands.

Did anyone see that? Hopefully no.

Landing went better, and Mo maintained his direction and his feet as he bumped gently back to the ground.

SPOILER!!: Lottie -- *SNORTS* -- and Professor!

Anyway.

Flying. Fun. Sure, it was.

And Alec was grinning. He probably was still thinking they were friends, right? Which could be true, because he wasn't carrying any candy at the moment and Lottie was right beside him. Though, friendship was not the reason. It was more about skills and who was better. Since he's still a winner...

Her eyes actually landed on West, and the look on his face that suggested he was giving something else a great deal of thought.

OH HEY! Her palm was down, right on top of the broom next to Alec...but her foot inched the tail closer to Seeker boy, so it was in a diagonal position instead... (Experiments. That's what West was thinking, no? The "I wonder if....?") ...if she said 'Up', and the broom was diagonally pointing at Seeker boy's direction...would it go up to him or to her palm? Let's see!

"Up!" she said, the confidence part she had figured out a loooong time ago, so it was no big deal, but the moment she saw the broom coming up, she retrieved her palm...leaving the broom going to...Seeker boy.

Hey, how are your reflexes, Alec?

So Alec had thought that this would be a fun, easy and entertaining lesson. One where he could rejoice in the fact that after MONTHS of not being able to fly, he could finally get back in the air with no difficulties whatsoever.

Oh how wrong he was.

WHACK!

Something came out from nowhere and WHACKED him at his side, sending him stumbling towards the person on his other side. Alec let out a small yell and clutched onto the stranger's robes, trying to balance himself. Really, what had just HAPPENED?! And why was he still holding onto someone's robes for dear life?! What if he ripped their robes?!

...

O_________________O

Finding his feet and balance, Alec stood up straight and let go of the person's robes. He sent them a small smile before awkwardly patting their shoulder. Pat pat... There. Yeah... it was a nice way to greet someone, wasn't it? Clutching onto them. Awesome. Shaking his head, the fourth year looked towards his other side at Lottie and... BLINK. Her broom? What was going on?! "Erm... do you have a rogue broom?" he whispered. And was she okay? Because she can't have been the person behind this, right?

...

Oh Professor James! Alec gave Lottie a weird, small smile before looking towards the Flying Professor. Oh! HEY! It was time for TAKE OFF. Or... nearly. The Hufflepuff patted himself down before mounting his broom, his right hand held above his left. There. He made a sweeping hairflip motion with his head -- but his hair didn't flip. Sadface. -- and looked back at the Professor. He was ready. He was SO ready for this.

And... KICK!

Ahhhhhhhhhh... flying! Now that he was up in the air, Alec looked down and grinned at Lottie his flying partner?. He knew that she could do this! Had... she flown before? He didn't exactly know. But he knew she could do this if she wanted to. And he could do some loop-de-loops and fly around in circles if he wanted to...

... but now wasn't the time for that.

The fifteen year old hovered in the air for a couple more seconds before pointing the nose of his broom downwards and landing gently in the spot he had been standing before.

West wasn't properly paying attention since it wasn't instructions he didn't know. He did mount and kick off rather smoothly, and then just chilled there not far from the ground for a bit, and returned the professor's grin. Did she have something fun in store? Something.... challenging? Would she mind if he ended up challenging himseeeeeelf?

He touched down again, though was actually still hovering, his feet were just resting on the ground and he was using the broomstick as a seat.

Just chillin'.

Now was the moment of truth. She would be leaving the ground for the first time by broom in years.

Elwood watched some of the students nearby swinging their legs over the broom and one by one raising into the air, hovering and then touching back down. It didn't look too hard but she was still a tad scared of falling.

WHAT IF THE BROOM DIDN'T GO BACK DOWN?! O___O

Right, she needed to do this now.

She swept a strand of blonde hair behind her ear and under her hat before swinging a jeaned leg over the broom. She was left-handed so placed that hand on the broomstick first and then her right hand just below it. After she was set with the boom underneath her and parallel to the grass, tilted skyward she kicked off.

Up...up...pause.

The picked up slightly and Callie's hat blew off and landed near some students but she didn't care, she was doing it! The Divination professor beamed from her spot in the air and then slowly lowered herself by leaning the broom towards the ground like Erin had instructed.

Melody smiled and did as she did as she was told. Even though she was Ambidextrous Melody decided to put her right hand forward. She positioned herself. Double check. Good she was well ready. The whistle tweeted and she pushed off with force, but too much just to let the broom know she was going to hover. She hovered for just a moment and then landed. Excellent.

"Hey Lex, I-I did it!"
Lex beamed over at her friend when she got the broom to go up. "See, I told you you could do it! Now all you have to focus on is not dying!" GRIN. Hopefully that boosted her confidence a bit because cowards on brooms were a BAD idea. Nothing good would ever come of it for sure!

While skilfully ignoring the BoG people who were bored enough to wanna interrupt a good class she set her gaze on the Professor who had gone off on another one of her motivational speeches. That was obviously what they were. Closer to the end of it she began bouncing in place juuuust a little because she was so excited to get to the flying.

Her bouncing slowed to a stop when she heard they were only meant to hover. Now how much fun would that be?

At the blowing of the whistle she sighed heavily, mounted her broom then kicked off. There was a small thrill from being above the ground but it was nothing compared to actually flying. She was still content to be hovering though, seeing as it meant not being on the ground. Too bad she'd have to get down. Quite reluctantly she landed once more. Mmmmm.

YAAAY! Was it time to go up, up, up into the air now? Bliss was all ready to go in the air, when...

ASDFGHJKLAASDDFGFSFG!

"WOOOAAAHHH!"

What was going on!?!?

She looked down with wide eyes and saw...Alec clutching her robes as if his life depended on it. Could she ask why he was doing that? Surely he had an actual reason. I mean...that wasn't normal behavior was it? "I....er....I....ALEC!" She half-cried, looking wildly around, embarrassed. BLINK. She could see that he looked just as confused and flustered as she felt, so it clearly wasn't his fault.

Her eyes swept over the row of people and landed on the person right next him. Lotus, was it? Had SHE done this? Well, that seemed obvious seen as her broom was now facing in Alec's general direction. The question was, was it accidental? She hoped so, because people shouldn't do that to people on purpose. It was RUDE.

"I....are you alright?" Cos that was what was important right now. Not some possibly-guilty-possibly-innocent girl.

And the flying, that would have to weight until she'd calmed down.

Mika just listened to Professor James and nodding she tried again to get her broom up into the air. She wanted to be a good flying coach for those little first years. Yeah she wanted to be a good role model. Right?

Mika put her right hand over the broom for a second time.

"Up" she spoke firmly, visualizing the broom lifting up into her hand. Yeah, she was sure it would happen but she was a little shocked when it actually lifted into her hand.

"EEP!" Yeah she was excited and it felt good on her.

Okie doke, mounting broom. Not a problem for Wade. First letting the tail end face the ground, then swinging one leg over the broom. There, now he could angle it towards the ground. It was a habit for Wade to grip things tighter than normal, so after mounting it he loosened his grip slightly, letting his left hand rest under his right on the handle.

Ah, they were going to fly now.. well, not freely but now float in air. Wade waited until the whistle blew before kicking off the ground.. and up he went.

It was a great feeling for Wade as he hovered... Until something flew at his face. "Woah!" Bucking on the broom slightly while regaining his composure, whilst the hat was still on his head he held it up to look around to see who owned it.. Hmm, was that lady here before? Wade did not know.. Was she an actual student, one of those Governer candidates or.. a Professor? Hmm..

Wade gently guided the broom handle downward so he could slowly descend to the ground safely before moving with the broomstick. Approaching her Wade asked, "Hello..ma'am does this," pointing at the hat that still sat on his head like a fancy sombrero. "belong to you?"

Oooooh! They were finally allowed to get on a broom! Granted, they could go crazy, but at least she'd be in the air...a little.

Peyton cheerily stood next to the school broom --brooms got her in a really good mood-- and placed her hand over it. Time to envision the broom following her instructions and going into her hand. It was the law of attraction, like her daddy had said. If you see it, you can do it. Something like that.

"Up!" she said, clearly and with authority. The broom wiggled and zoomed up into her hand, and she grasped it. A smirk slowly spread her lips. Got iiiiit!

Now to do what Professor James has instructed of them. Peyton mounted the broom and kicked off. Eeeeep. She hasn't been in the air since school started. This was niiiiice. She hovered for a little moment, extremely tempted to just fly up, up and away. She thought better of it. She didn't want to lose any house points. She then landed softly, still on the broom, getting to know it. It wasn't like HER broom, but it was nice.

SPOILER!!: Professor Elwood! ^_^

Oh! Look who was here!

Peyton beamed in the direction of Professor Elwood. Oh, look! Her hat, it was flying away. It landed several inches away from Peyton, but a classmate picked it up and took it back to the professor. "Hi!" Peyton beamed at the woman. "You like flying, professor Elwood?" Because she sure did seem to be enjoying it. "That's a pretty hat you have there,by the way," she said, rocking on her heals and waiting for further instructions from the Flying instructor.

She eyed the hat, though. It was massive, but pretty.

She even went through and checked all the cushioning charms to make sure they had not worn off over the years before the term began, just to be sure.

Beezus listened as Professor James reiterated and elaborated more on the techniques of flying. Nothing that, "A broom's capability is determined by its rider." Yeah. Definitely. So show it who's boss and maintain confidence.

She did as they were told and mounted the broom, then kicked off from the ground. Ooooooooh. Aaaaaiiiiiiiiiiir..... Hover, hover, hover. She watched as her peers struggled. And er, how Professor Elwood is trying to survive.

She stayed in the air for a few minutes more before gently pushing the handle downward, making her descent. The brunette jumped off her broom when she was close to the ground, placed it standing then slumped against it as she waited for more instructions.

Minerva got settled on her broom. She looked around watching the first years. She could be very patient, she knew how bad she was at flying her first term. She had never knew a broom could fly let alone be able to fly on one. Watching as some struggled to get the broom in the air and then as a few went up then back down Minerva smiled. She just wanted to tell them all it would get better.

Gently kicking off the ground she let her feet lift just a bit then let them back t the ground. She was ready to be in the air, how she missed it over the summer, but she was so busy as well that she didn't think about it to much. It would feel great to be up in the air though.

Finally time to start flying!

...Though not completely.

Meh. Only hovering a few feet right now? That was kinda boring. But at least it was something, Penelope supposed. And they'd be properly flying soon, right? So she could deal with the small, really easy stuff for right now.

The Gryffindor mounted the broom and kicked off the ground with a great deal more gentleness than normal so that she'd only fly up a few feet. Woo. Ish. She hovered for several seconds, at least enjoying the feeling of not being on the ground, before she finally pointed the handle down and landed with relative ease.

Now to wait until they could move on to the really fun stuff.

If you're a bit nervous about discomfort, remember that brooms have cushioning charms - once we take flight, you'll find that it's not as bad as you'd think." Oh how wrong he was.

O_O

Honestly, she didn't mean for the broom to hit Alec so hard. Nor for him to lose his balance and almost fall on that other person...HAI BLISS!

I guess we've learned two things. ONE...the broom didn't go to her hand, meaning that she answers the general direction at which one summons it. TWO...Alec's reflexes suck. Big time. Poor Hufflepuff boy.

The boy quickly recovered. But she'd heard that small yell. First Alice, then Alec, she was on a roll. Since he was alright, her eyes denoted ZERO worry...and instantly looked at her broom. Rogue broom? "I guess we'll see!" she said, before summoning it up again, and taking it smoothly in her hand. "Nope." A small shrug came to her shoulders and her eyes moved to Bliss, "He's fine, he plays Quidditch," which was a lot more scary than being whacked by a broom. "I apologize on the broom's behalf, Seeker boy," she added, smiling sweetly at the Hufflepuff next to her.

Now, the could take off! Or...Alec, really, because he did so oh-so-quickly, and she simply looked at everything he did. No need, for she's flown before, but she didn't do so as often as he did.

Lottie actually waited until Alec was safely on the ground before taking off herself.

OKAY! Mounting the broom, grabbing it nicely, and kick. She was beginning to wonder about rogue brooms right when she was on the air. Appropriate much? Then she motioned the broom downward, but rather slowly. Heh.

The girl beamed at Seeker boy once she was down of her broom. Why was he taking Basic Flying again?
