On a cloudy, windless day, a slightly perturbed Professor James stood in the middle of the practice pitch between two long lines of school broomsticks in the grass. She was eyeing the brooms with apprehension; she had tested out a few of them for safety, but were all of the school brooms really reliable? Stop worrying, Erin. Surely Professor Vindictus would have disposed of any broomsticks that had given anyone trouble in the past, right? The students would be fine - but she did make a mental note to work on improving the school broomsticks for the following term. These students deserved better. Even if the brooms flew fine, the appearance mattered, too, didn't it? The kids needed to be able to trust the brooms.
With one hand clung to the shiny silver whistle around her neck and the other rested anxiously on her waist, James awaited the arrival of bright new faces who were eager to learn.
OOC: This class is going to cover the basics of flying; in other words, this is a class for first years and those who wish to brush up on their flying skills. More advanced flyers are by no means required to attend. Please review the classroom rules before posting in this thread!
Belle was happy to be back into the swing of things. Especially heading down to go to Flying class. She loved this class and plus it gave her reminders of how to fly properly. Belle smiled at the professor and said, "Good morning Professor, how are you?"
When Thomas wandered out to the pitch to attend 'Basic Flying', he had been expecting to be greeted by a sea of first year faces and feel utterly stupid for being one of the only older members of the school in class. But much to his relief, which showed on his face as the tense frown faded and he relaxed a little, he was pleased to find a few fifth years were in attendance. He may have still been one of the oldest kids, but at least he didn't look like a complete.. twit.
Tom liked flying, but coming to magic so late, and having a terrible penchant for letting information go one ear and straight out the other, he felt he needed to brush up on his basic knowledge a little.
"'Ello, Professor.” He greeted the lady and took his place among his peers.
Susan was excited to start her flying lessons. Her dad taught her the basics at home, but wouldn't teach her much after that, he told her she would have to wait til she got to school like everyone else. So she was finally here and ready to starting learning how to be a great flyer. Sue went over to introduce herself the her professor. "Hello Professor, I'm Susan, first year..it's great to meet you."
Completely unlike the way she would have reacted a couple of years ago when it came to a flying lesson which she wasn’t required to attend, the fifth year made her way to the pitch with an actual smile on her face. Somehow, since last term she had learned to like Flying. And well, the lesson was a good opportunity to practice and therefore, Gwendolyn wasn’t going to miss it.
So here she was. The Ravenclaw made her way to the practice pitch with hasty steps. ‘Hello Professor’, the sixth year said and then joined the other students who were already waiting for class to start.

Alyssa joined the rest of the students on the Quidditch Pitch. She had missed being on it. She noticed that they had a new Flying Lesson Professor, so she walked up to the woman and greeted her with a smile.
Hello Professor. Welcome to Hogwarts. My name is Alyssa Potter" Alyssa introduced herself before standing to aside and waited for the class to start.
Kaiden gladly made his way out to the flying lesson, not that he needed lessons. Flying was something he was actually pretty good at, and his favorite thing was to go fast. He was out here because he wanted an excuse to fly, and well, it couldn’t hurt to err, make a good impression on the professor. Seeing the group gathered, he saw several familiar faces and smirked. Coming to stand among the gathered students, he saw the professor lady who was apparently new this term, and gave her a smile. “Mornin’ Ma’am.” He said in his southern accent.

This was a lesson Penelope looked forward to every term. Even if it was only about the basics of flying, it was still flying, and that was something she liked. It seemed like ages since she was last on a broom anyway, so she would accept the chance to fly as soon as it came. Which was now.
Oh, right, and they had a new professor since Vindictus left. "Hi, professor," Penelope greeted her with a small smile. Hopefully she'd be a fun professor too. Once the lesson started, they'd find out. So Peneope stood with the rest of the students present and waited.

Finally having some free time and nothing to fill it with, Roxanne made her way over to Hogwarts and the Quidditch pitch to check out the flying lesson. After all, the letter said that she could pop in on any additional lesson she'd like. While she'd never particularly liked flying, this was the only one going on in this time period. So, here she was, coffee and lawn chair in hand, ready.
After setting up the chair and conjuring up a table for her coffee, she approached the professor for an introduction, removing her sunglasses and holding her hand out for a shake. "Hello, my name's Roxanne Carter and I'm running for one of the open Board of Governors positions. Do you mind terribly if I observe your class, just to get an idea of how you run it?"

Basic flying?
Did Richard Turner need Basic Flying instructions? Not at all. Yet he considered this lesson to be an opportunity to fly and socialize at the same time. Yeah. It was going to be fun. He was determined to make it fun. It was an energetic day for him so he could hardly wait for the opportunities that he could use this energy.
He breathed in the fresh air happily and waved at the professor woman. ''Hello, professor'' he said and walked to the others.

To get better and better, of course. She wasn't going to go pro by doing a bunch of Arithmancy problems and carving a tree full of runes, was she? Nope. Besides, she knew they had a new instructor, and she was curious to find out just who this Erin James was.
"Hello," she said, coming to a stop before the professor. "I'm Sierra Greingoth." Yup. It was best to appear calm and confident.
Then his gray eyes caught her. Yeah...her; the Greingoth girl. Before approaching her he looked around a bit. Aurora was not around. It was not like she would come to a flying class anyway. Sad, he wanted her to come but at least now this meant there was not going to be any misunderstanding. Dylan was not around as well. Good. This meant there was not going to be anyone constantly reminding him that he had a girlfriend.
Wearing his most charming smirk, he approached the prefect girl and stood beside her. ''Hey there.'' his gray eyes playfully narrowed at her. ''So you decided to come, as well? And i was wondering why this morning suddenly brightened. It is your shining beauty.''
Taylor to the lesson. She sighed, knowing that the usual professor was gone for at least a term... a new head of house and quidditch and flying... Tay smiled though and went over to the professor, "Hello, Professor." She beamed a smile, "My mother made you some fudge the day we left for Hogwarts and told me to bring it to you when she heard there was going to be a new professor..." Her eyes grew, "I hope you like fudge..." She trailed off and sighed, holding out the fudge. Tay wanted to hide forever.
Alice lazily made her way over to Lex, resting her head on her shoulder before letting out a loud yawn. It was just too early to start the day and being out in the open obviously lacked comfortable desks and chairs to lay ones head on.
"G'morning, well as good as the morning can get when I acually have to do work" she grumbled
Alice's eyes fluttered open and she quickly looked around and took in her surroundings, somewhere deep down she knew Lex meant well in begging her to join the c bowed "nice lass but still, waking up to actually manual work . But oh well, she's already here, might as well get started. She brought two fingers to her forehead giving a quick salute.
Peyton didn't need a reminder for this class. No. She had stamped little hearts next to it on her schedule, and she has been waiting for it to be time ALL day. Now that it was, redhead skipped ALL the way to the pitch.
Wow...she loved it already!
Now where was the professor? Oh, that must be her, the one with the whistle in her hand. "Good day, Professor James." Yes, she had remembered the lady's name too. "I'm Peyton Baltazar." Introductions, good, yeah?
Hmmm...now who did she know here..?
OOOH! Lookit! There was Richaaard. "Hi, Richard!" She waved from her spot. He seemed busy with their Prefect.

Carter took the very familiar path to the Quidditch Pitch. He smiled as he looked around. Merlin he missed this place. And, he couldn't resist the opportunity to see ickle firsties on their brooms for the first time. He distinctly remembered his first flying lesson, which actually took place AFTER quidditch tryouts.
She smiled as she looked around. His hands were shoved in his pockets. Merlin, it was good to be back. So many of his memories were from this pitch. It was like home to him.
Now... where was this new flying professor?

So she had thought about it all week and had finally decided to take up Erin's offer to help teach her about flying.
Calista Elwood was not comfortable for many reasons though. Firstly she was afraid of falling off the broom and hurting herself. Secondly she would be in front of students since she really didn't have time at the moment for one-on-one lessons with marking assignments and such. And thirdly and most annoying was the fact that she had had to leave her flowwy skirts and sandals behind and was stuck wearing jeans, trainers and a big fancy hat so that it would be harder for the kids to see her face.
'How in Merlin's Beard do people wear these all the time?' The blonde thought to herself as she made her way to the Practice Pitch and then lines of brooms and students. When she arrived she noticed two other adults...Board candidates perhaps? Maybe they were as bad at flying as she was.
"Hello Erin, thanks for the invitation again, really." she greeted the new flying instructor with a small smile.
FINALLY! It was finally time for flying class. McCall had been waiting forever, and it was officially time for a flying lesson. She was so excited to get started. McCall loved to fly. She spent most of her free time at home flying with her older brothers and sister. They would play mini-Quidditch games in the backyard, which they paid for by multiple lectures and punishments from Mrs. Asha about how Quidditch was to be played AWAY from the house. Let's just say that multiple windows were broken.
McCall breathed in the fresh air as she approached the pitch. "Hello, professor!" she chirped happily. She couldn't hide her happy mood, she was ecstatic to get flying again.

YEAHHHHHHHHHHH, FLYING. BOOM. Mo hopped into place on the pitch, giving the whole place the eager attention of a crup puppy. If he'd had a tail... it would be wagging. Other than when Mo had been down to sign up for tryouts, he hadn't seen the pitch at all, and that had been all... busy and distracted and whatnot.
Now he had time to give it proper attention, and Mo scooted over to stand by West... who else would he want to be with on the pitch, hmm? "This is a nice pitch. Look at those stands. I like 'em, even if they sorta look like they'd catch fire easily when we set off fireworks after Ravenclaw wins all their games this term." Total nonchalance.

He was one of the first there too, which was cool. West approached the professor.

He deposited himself on the grass and relaxed, waiting for things to begin and for the rest of his future teammates to show up too.

Heading down to the Quidditch pitch, Dylan was not in the best of moods. It was the first week of term and he was SICK. Ugh, it hurt to do anything...Especially with all his coughing and hacking...but as a Captain, he had an obligation.
It was Flying. He was a Quidditch player.
Also, it was excellent practice to get back in the swing of things. Tryouts were next week. His hopefuls needed to brush up...In fact, he'd owl'd them, just in case...
Spying a group of them, the Slytherin approached. "I'm guessing you guys got my owl?" COUGH. Or maybe they had just come because they wanted to see the new Professor. EITHER WAY...
"Welcome to the Pitch, Professor James."

Who was this person in the huge hat? Didn't she, he'd assume since it was a girlish hat, know she couldn't properly fly in that thing?

Just to be polite...
"Ma'am?...." It may or may not have sounded a bit forced. "......You do realize you can't effectively fly....in that hat, right?"...because it needed to be said.

Zhenya walked to the Basics lesson for flying. She didn't need to learn how to fly. She knew how to fly. But, she didn't think she would be trying out for this year's Quidditch Team sooooo she thought it would be good to get back on the broom and fly, maybe learn a thing or two that she hadn't previously learned. She wore appropriate clothes, and saw a good crowd already there. There were lots of students and.. a few adults. That was odd. She was hoping they weren't being assessed by anyone but the new Professor. OH! She was new! That was nice.
"Hello Professor. I'm Zhenya Burton," she greeted politely, not remembering the Professor's name. She made a mental note to remember it for next lesson.

Flying? Ofim thought to himself! Flying, man was he excited! He had run to the Qudditch Pitch. Though..he didn't even know what the heck Qudditch was.. he'd heard other students talking about it...
LATEEEEEEE........... Well not really but she might as well have been cutting it SO close.
Ariana arrived on the pitch just minutes before the lesson started adn approached her usuals.. "hey." she said out of breath a bit.. man she was out of shape.. she needed to get to pratcing adn back in shape adn Quick cause tryouts were coming adn yeah Dylan would not be very happy if ariana didn't show up soo. she had gotten his own and rushhhedddd down to the pitch and well here she was "morning professor." she said you know.. before she forgot..
Now Dylan had missed flying so much that he decided to go to the class, plus he a new broom that he was itching to tryout. He was so glad that his dad got him this broom, but not so pleased that he didnt get to test it out. He went out and saw the new professor, mm she didnt look to be too strict.. maybe he could get away with a few things. "Hey Professor!" he said a little excitedly as he waited for others to get there so that the class could start and get onto his broom and fly around the pitch!
Aquila quickly made her way down the Pitch, her long blond curls whipping behind her. This will be her first time flying on a BROOM, so naturally she'd be very curious!excited.
Which isnt to say she's never flown before, but then again there seems to be many things from her island that people around these parts seem to find rather strange.
She skipped to a halt in front of the Professor. "Goodmorning Professor--" oh no, forgot the name again. She scrambled for her class schedule from her pocket then hurriedly read the print "Oh! Goodmorning Professor James!"
*smiley face*
Ah! The first arrival! Professor James offered the young girl a smile of encouragement and replied brightly, "Good day, dear." One out of one seemed eager to learn!

She strolled down the quidditch pitch as soon as she finished getting ready. She wondered what they will do today? Plus she heard that someone, hopefully not strict, replaced Vindictus. That professor shall be missed.
Walking around the pitch she saw the professor and looked like she's ready enough to start this lesson. Juliet smiled and greeted her "Good morning professor"
"Good day, dear. It's nice to see you," Professor James grinned as a new student approached the center of the pitch.

"Hello," she replied a bit offhandedly, but followed up her greeting with a welcoming smile. By his demeanor and posture in the grass, the boy seemed either indifferent toward flying or he was very comfortable on the pitch. James assumed the later and assured him, "Class will begin shortly."

"Good day, dear," Professor James smiled and fidgeted with her whistle. "Thanks for coming." As if she had a choice, really. Many of them didn't.

What a sweetheart! "Good day, dear - thank you!" she replied enthusiastically. "Yes, it is! Quite so!" ANOTHER person pumped for a lesson on flying! That was quite the encouragement, really. That was the way everyone should have felt about the day's class!

Things were different out her. All you needed was a love of flying and a willingness to learn--not that she needed to learn, that last part was for the ones who'd had the shoddy luck of never flying before.
"G'Morning Professor!" GRIN.
This might have been a beginners class thing but that didn't mean she didn't plan to show yup! Nope. She wanted to fly a broom too. It wasn't fair for only them have all the fun. She stopped right by the Professor and looked at everyone else that had already arrived. The others would be arriving soon, yeah?
Another eager one, it seemed by the child's bright face. "Good day, dear. How are you?" She could guess the answer, of course, but it didn't hurt to inquire all the same.

"Morning, Professor." She beaaaamed at the new lady-- didn't she look a bit like that former Ravenclaw Keeper?-- and waited. She was waiting for lesson to start, for the time when she could use one of those shiny brooms. And she was also hoping that none of the firsties would break the best one that she used for games. Ah. One of the two faces she knew and hadn't met yet. A Captain.
"Good day, Miss Fischer. It's nice to finally meet you. Can't resist an opportunity to fly, I presume?" As a Captain, surely the girl didn't need to attend this class. James couldn't blame her for her passion, though.
She had been the same way.

The hesitation of the boy's greeting gave her room to fill in the blank with a smile, "James, dear. Professor James. It's a pleasure to meet you, Theodore." Vaguely familiar face, vaguely familiar name. He must have been on his house's Quidditch team the previous year. "Class will begin shortly."

Audrey eyed the broomsticks. Flying was still amazing to her; she'd only learned about it a month ago. She couldn't wait to start.

Spotting some familiar faces, Ells BEAMED and finger wiggled at her friends. She then stood quietly by the broom nearest HER Hulk and waited.
Another familiar face - one whose name she did know, thanks to her son's stories. She introduced herself anyway, and Professor James beamed. "Yes, I know who you are - Max has told me all about you. Making her way to the court, she could notice a lady standing at the corner of it with a whistle in her hand. Hmm, a NEW professor. So should she be introducing herself to her first? She waved at the lady and beamed. "Hello Professor, my name is Tiffany,"she greeted in her usual cheerful tone. "Just call me Tiff will be fine." She finished her line, adding a small smirk in the end.

Either way, she was excited to take any opportunity to fly that she could get and she hadn't had much time to practice in the holidays because Tag had come to visit and he'd never asked about playing Quidditch and the rest of the time she had spend in Diagon Alley. Also, it was an extra chance to meet up and play with her friends, she thought as she spotted Theo, Lex, Alice, West and Ella all happy and ready to fly. Flying was SUCH a fun sport. Yeah, it was.
The bubbly third year then walked over to where everyone was standing and looked over at the professor. She was their new Professor? Bliss hoped that she was good. Well, she probably was, seen as she'd got the job. But Vindictus was a lot to match up to. Professor James might have her work cut out for her. "Hello there, Professor, I'm Bliss," she told her and beamed for a effect. A sweet smile always got her brownie point, yes?
"Bliss? That's a lovely name - it's wonderful to meet you." Another Hufflepuff Quidditch player. "Thank you for coming." Because, once again, this was someone who probably didn't really need a flying class for beginners. Nonetheless, James was delighted to have her present.

"Lovely day, Professor." Wade greeted before joining the others on the pitch.
"Indeed it is, dear," Professor James replied with a luminous smile. "A beautiful day for flying!" No wind would hopefully help those who had never flown before gain better control of the broomstick.

"I'm Edvard Messer." he added before he went to where Ella and Alice were standing and he gave the girls a 'Hello' nod.
"Good day, dear. Thank you!" Thank Merlin for the students who introduced themselves. She wanted to learn their names, but many of them seemed keen on making her work for the names. "It's wonderful to meet you, Mister Messer. Class should begin shortly."

But then that was what this latest class was for... Flying basics. Probably something for first years and such but there was nothing that said older students like herself couldn't get involved. So Ellura had made her way downtown the practice pitch, following the guidance of others since she was still learning the lay of the land. She noticed several other students already there as well as the woman denoted as the new flying professor. Not that she had been around to meet the old professor.
"Good morning, Professor," she greeted with a friendly smile.
As the students continued to make their way onto the pitch, Professor James found her demeanor brightening. Either there were many students passionate about flying... or they were all nosy as to who had taken Vindictus' position after all those years. "Good day, dear!" she greeted the young Gryffindor.

She assumed it was because it was every kind of broom she was scared of - flying brooms, cleaning brooms....and if there were any other types, she was scared of them also.
When she joined the small group of students already gathered for the class, Els began to play nervously with her hair, before closing her eyes. If she pretended this was an entirely different class, she'd be fine - right?
Elodie began to whisper a little reassurance to herself. "It's just...Care of Magical Creatures, Elodie...." And the creatures were totally beasts that terrified her. Oh, it was worth a shot...
One student in particular did not share the overall aura of excitement that most of the students had given off so far. She seemed downright terrified, actually. Professor James offered the girl a sorrowful expression; she was certainly one of the ones that was not there by choice.

Ah, yes. One of the prefects. "Good day, Miss Greingoth. How are you?"

Of course, the only reason why she was there was to get some practice in. Any time on the Pitch was always good practice and she wanted to take any opportunity to fly under her belt. That and this class was the perfect vessel to get some flying in AND to earn some points. Since Kurumi wasn't here anymore and everyone had to step up their point earning. Seriously.
Walking onto the Pitch, she grinned at the new Professor who kind of looked familiar. She wasn't sure that she had met the Professor before but the face did sort of ring a bell. Huh. Well, she would worry about that later or something.
Waving to the new Professor she said with a grin and a nod, "Morning Professor." Time to get some flying under way. Awesome. OH LOOK IT WAS BITER!
Returning the wave to a familiar face from photographs, Professor James grinned at the Gryffindor Captain-turned-Head Girl. She couldn't blame her for the title change, really - how could she pass up the opportunity? It would surely look good on a resumé one day, too. "Good day, dear."

Now with Professor J teaching for the first time, Ness just refused to miss out.
With a small smile propped on her face, the red head ventured towards the pitch. She felt calm, and she knew once the flying began she would feel as free as anything, which was exactly why she enjoyed it. But for now, she needed not to squee her head off over how excited she really was, she needed to look calm.
"Morning Professor J." Bright beam!
She then headed towards the other students wanting to see which of her Hufflepuffs were here. The more the better, because these lessons could really help them with try outs.
Professor J.
The Hufflepuff Captain was the sweetest, wasn't she?
"Good day, Ness. I trust that you are well?" She seemed gleeful enough, at least.

Tom liked flying, but coming to magic so late, and having a terrible penchant for letting information go one ear and straight out the other, he felt he needed to brush up on his basic knowledge a little.
"'Ello, Professor.” He greeted the lady and took his place among his peers.
Ah, another older student! There was no shame in that, James thought - the majority of the Quidditch Captains had showed up, after all. "Good day, dear," she smiled.

So here she was. The Ravenclaw made her way to the practice pitch with hasty steps. ‘Hello Professor’, the sixth year said and then joined the other students who were already waiting for class to start.
As the flow of the students entering the pitch began to slow down, Professor James worked on recalling the names of those who had introduced themselves. When a Ravenclaw entered the pitch, James greeted, "Good day, dear - you're just in time. Class will begin in a few moments."

Oh, right, and they had a new professor since Vindictus left. "Hi, professor," Penelope greeted her with a small smile. Hopefully she'd be a fun professor too. Once the lesson started, they'd find out. So Peneope stood with the rest of the students present and waited.
"Hello, dear," Professor James smiled at the Gryffindor - a familiar face once again, so surely she was a Quidditch player last term. "Class will begin in a few moments. We're just waiting for a few more stragglers..."

And then someone quite older entered the pitch, and Professor James observed her with curiosity as she... set up a table? For coffee?
Oh. Of course. One of the candidates.
...Did she really think it was going to be safe to sit in on a beginning flying class? She wasn't afraid of a first year flying into her?
That was her problem, though.
"Ah, yes - hello, Miss Carter - of course! If I might caution you, though," she beckoned the woman closer with a hand, smiled a bit, and spoke softly, "I'd watch out for the young ones. I'll direct them away from you, of course, but keep your eyes open, all right?" She would have hated for a candidate to get taken out by a flying student.

Awwww.
The professor's entire demeanor softened; her confident stance slouched as the young woman presented her with a treat. Was her mother... a fan? Or did her mother merely want her daughter to make a good impression with new professors - ah, yes. That was it. Still, Professor James' entire face lit up with sincere gratitude. "That was too kind of her - thank you very much! Please send your mother my endless praise. If you stop by my office sometime today after class, we can share these together." She certainly didn't need to indulge in the fudge all on her own. "What's your name, dear?"

When a gentleman walked into the pitch this time, Professor James was much less caught off guard - surely it was another Board of Governors candidate. As he made his way toward them, she offered a wave to get his attention. "Hello, dear - Board of Governors candidate, I presume?" She gestured toward Roxanne Carter to let him know he was not alone, and that it would probably be best if he took up residence over there.
Unless he wanted to join the class and fly, too.

Finally - the face she was most hoping would appear at the entrance to the pitch. Even though her appearance was... quite unusual. What was with the massive hat? Did she think it was going to help her fly better? Perhaps give her better balance, much like a Muggle airplane? Erin wasn't going to argue either way - she was merely overjoyed that the woman had the bravery to show up at all. "I'm glad you could make it, Callie. Feel free to go at your own pace - you can watch to learn or join in with the class. It's up to you," she encouraged softly so the students wouldn't overhear.
Still, Erin didn't think Elwood had any reason to be embarrassed about attending the class in her free time. If anything, wouldn't the students be more encouraged by her presence?

OOC: Please offer up one suggestion per person. No need to wait for Professor James to call on you once your hand is raised - just go ahead and give your answer as if she called on you.
Rawdon decided to leave his racing broom in the dormitory where it would remain safe (per the advice of both his uncles) and took his place next to one of the school brooms. He noticed that quite a few of the older students were in attendance as well as another professor, so he wouldn't stand out from the firsties who were probably itching to fly.
He listened as the new Flying professor asked a question and he was quick to raise his hand. "Don't strangle the broom handle with a death grip," Rawdon stated, "because you need a relaxed grip to help you when you need to turn directions in the air."

"Yes Ma'am." Kaiden said with a grin and a nod. He hadn't been on a broom since he left Salem.
Eyeing the school brooms as Professor James takted about them, the boy wrinkled his nose. They were didn't look very reliable, and as soon as she said to choose one, he quickly moved down the line stopping at one that looked the best. Something they would need to know? Kaiden thrust his hand in the air. "They need to know how to accelerate to go fast."
