The bank of the Black Lake was definitely a different setting than the usual Divination Classroom high in the towers of Hogwarts Castle but that is where the rest of the lesson was to be held.
Professor Elwood walked over to the sandy and muddy soil and stood with her back to the water waiting for the trail of students to gather around her. The water was lapping near the heels of her sandal-ed feet.
OOC: Please post here at the Divination Lesson before having your character arrive at the Lake.
They were coming right? Calista had turned around and checked to be sure that the Giant Squid wasn't lurking nearby at least that she could see and finally saw the end of the line of students approaching.
"Alright everyone, go ahead and set you things down over in the grass under that tree. You can take off your outer robes too if you'd like." Divination wasn't meant to be practiced when you were all wrapped up on layers of uncomfortable clothes. Layers of things like shawls and skirts were a different story, obviously. "And while you're over there go ahead and remove your shoes and socks."
And when she said that the blonde walked over to the tree and removed her own sandals and returned back to her original spot, barefoot. *beam*
After she gave the students time to follow her instructions she decided it was time to officially start. "The first part of Ichnomancy I want to talk about is the one that has to deal with animal prints." She pointed to a set of prints in the sand and gestured for them to take a look. "What kind of animal left these prints and can you tell me attribute or characteristics that are associated with that kind of animal."
It didn't matter how fast he walked, but Rawdon felt like he was falling behind everyone else. He heard the directive to remove his outer robes, which he did with glee, and he sat down to remove his shoes and socks then rolled up his pants so that they were 5 inches shorter because he didn't want to get them wet. Once that was done, he hurried over to see what everyone was looking at.
Rawdon looked at the tracks and tried not to snort with laughter. Ravenclaws were here, firsties to be exact, that's what!
It took him a moment to regain his composure and he looked at the tracks again, this time with an air of seriousness. A bird. A skinny bird. Two legs that don't have enough meat on them for dinner. Might be lost or looking for something or thought it was too cold to go for a swim. Ooo! Now that's rather interesting....
He raised his hand. "Professor, it looks like some sort of bird that has super skinny legs and long toes, but there isn't any webbing between the toes. It must know how to fly a little bit 'cause if you look closely at the lower left print and the one directly above it, you can see that it landed and that's why those two prints are more pronounced than the others. It must like the water, too, since there are tracks here by the Lake. Maybe it decided that this was a nice spot to search for a snack or maybe it wanted to chill." Rawdon finished and hoped that he showed a smidgen of intelligence.

Dylan really bent down and looked at the prints.. he even poked them a teeny bit not enough to mess up the prints but he felt like poking them. "Professor they look like the print of a large bird.. maybe a really old bird.. from like.. hundreds of years ago." he looked up at the professor "Professor.. this could be like a really good find for those muggle people.. you know the ones that study.. old stuff from like hundreds of years ago" he then looked at the prints and back at the professor "Intelligent, feathered, beaky.. and with sharp claws I think" he said looking at them again.. they looked old to him.

Nerida loved the lake...But she hated mud with a passion...Ever since having a mud fight with her brothers and she accidentally swallowed it and yeah the feeling of it between your toes!! Yuck! Even the thought made her gag. "Well it has webbed feet it looks....." Before she finished Professor Elwood corrected herself...She giggled, it was a funny mistake. She looked down at the print.. The animal has human characteristics?? What... Hearing some of the other answers she thought for a moment... Coming up with a few answers she thought might work she raised her hand and said "Maybe confused it waddled weird!" Was waddled the correct term, the Ravenclaw could not remember at all!! "It doesn't look like the prints show any sign of anger or rage....Or intelligence.."

Ellura made a detour to the tree to set down her belongings out of the way as Professor Elwood suggested. The girl slipping in the now-dry page of notes to keep them safe as well. She had almost moved back to the group when the woman added a note about taking off their shoes and socks. Really? Not that the third year had any problem with that seeing as she preferred to be barefoot at times...more relaxed. Removing the items and setting them beside her bag, the girl returned to gathering once more to see the tracks that the professor was talking about.
Bird...certainly.
The class had that right. She had to try and think of the characteristics of the creatures which was harder. After all there were many different types of birds and not all of them were the same. "It would depend on the type of bird," Ellura remarked voicing her thoughts, "but perhaps skiterish is one characteristic that covers many. They do tend to flee or fight if one gets to close and they feel they are in danger."

Zhenya walked towards the lake, following the others. She saw the muddy, sandy ground and thought it would be messy, but that just made it even more fun. She followed Professor Elwood's instructions, walked to the tree and dumped her bag and outer robe. She slowly took off her shoes and socks, and placed her feet on the the ground. Huh; not too bad.
She had a good look at the set of footprints and frowned. What in Merlin's bag are THEY? She had a big think. Well, there didn't look like there was a tail in there, so maybe something without a tail. And... well most birds she knew had 4 toes, one behind. This one only had three. She didn't have a clue. She looked up at the Professor, and back down again. Finally she raised her hand to make a guess "Well.. It kind of looked a bit bird-like, but maybe it's a... duck." She knew it wasn't but she had no other idea. "The print doesn't show any tail marks so I don't think it's a reptile. But there looks like it could be a decent amount of weight, unless the feet are just sharp and dug down that deep..." She trailed off, just completely lost.
However, when Professor Elwood clarified her question, she put her hand up again "Professor I think maybe this animal is... a bit uncoordinated. The footsteps look like it's turning but sort of like it's waddling a bit. Like my uncle when he's had too much Firewhiskey. Uh but it looks like it has a lot of balance. Maybe... maybe it's patient." That was just about all she could understand from the prints.

Distracted yet again with everything else as soon as she took her robes, shoes and socks off, it took this little girl a while to realize that those people around the Professor means there is a discussion going on.
Oops.
She wormed and peeked her way through "Ohhh bird prints..." she whispered. What were the characteristic to them. She caught the answer of the boy who talked the mostest from Runes (West), she didnt understand half of what he said in that class, but this one she did. And she giggled.
Simple. She's good with simple. at least for now
She bit her upper lip to think what other characteristics birds have in common with people. "Uhm.... birds can be tedious? I mean they do pick off seeds one at time."

Anya headed down to the lake with Jake in one hand and her chocolate frog in the other. But... that very quickly changed to Jake in one hand and... an empty space in the other. Hehehe.
And the entire time she thought about Westomancy... and how if they were studying it, West would totally let her nap instead of just giggling. Because it was a serious suggestion. It was always a serious suggestion. She loved naps.
When they got close she dropped his hand and hurried over to where the rest of the class was gathered. Oooh! Fun. Taking off their shoes? They were going to play in the water. Brilliant. She knew she liked this class for a reason.
She haphazardedly tossed her bag and shoes and socks under the tree. She then peered at the footprints.
"A really skinny dinosaur." she blurted out without thinking. "Representing the human trait of hunger." Because that's what dinosaurs were good for. Eating.
She then blinked several times. ... she spent way too much time with her brother this summer.
She raised half raised her hand. "...sorry. I mean... a bird. Which... could represent... the human characteristic of... freedom?" Because... bird's flew. ... and she didn't actually know what birds thought about. So, it seemed like a good answer to her.

Nibbling the last of his chocolate frog, Jake stood on his toes to look over Anya's shoulder at the footprints they were supposed to analyze. "They're birds," he decided with a nod. As for what that meant, though... "Um. Maybe... fatigue?" Because birds usually flew, but since the prints were in the sand... maybe the bird had gotten tired and had to land.
...Was this supposed to help them understand themselves? Isn't that what Divination was for?

Jory dropped his bag at the spot the Professor indicated. He took off his outer robe, folded it neatly and placed it on his bag. Then he removed his socks and shoes and placed them next to his bag. He didn't mind no shoes, he loved to feel the ground beneath.
The boy looked at the prints then raised his hand. "They a bird's print,'' he said. "Er...a characteristic is that many of them are easily scared away?'' He wasn't sure if he got that last bit right...he knew birds are easily scared away but would that response work?

"And that's not really an apology," Aspen countered. She didn't smile back. She barely BLINKED. The Slytherin was being weird.
Someone - NO DOUBT a Gryffindor - had just suggested the print was from a skinny dinosaur. The suggestion threatened to take Aspen's eyes off of Dylan, but she maintained. She'd STARE him down until he looked away or squirmed.
Or Professor Elwood made them change clothes again or something. Whichever came first.

Dylan eyed the Ravenclaw, trying to decide if she was pulling his leg or not. He'd SAID the word 'apologize'. How was that not considered an apology? It hadn't been sarcastic.

Following Professor Elwood's instructions, the Ravenclaw brunette went over to the grass patch and settled her things together with her classmate's. The outer robes went off too. And so did her shoes and knee socks.
Barefooted. That wasn't too bad. In fact, it made her want to take a dip at the Lake now.
She glanced briefly at the said body of water before turning her attention to the blonde Professor who was currently showing them some prints on the sand. Promenading over, yes, because she loved feeling the sand beneath her feet, she narrowed her eyes at the site. "Er. Seems like birds, Professor." And not because it was the common answer. It really seemed that way. "And....it appeared to be....scared? Anxious? Hesitant?" Kind of.
Sarah liked being outdoors, the fresh oxygen invigorated her greatly. Nature was beautiful.

Sarah out her satchel down as directed and looked nervously around. Was she meant to go barefoot? The teacher did so Sarah took off her tights and her shoes and looked down at her narrow feet before her. The ground had its usual nice feeling. She then looked at the footprints the teacher was referring too. "those look like bird" Sarah said raising her hand, like the others not understanding the teachers question.

Sarah then thought of birds, "birds are hardworking, as in they peck for ages on a loaf of bread or spend forever building a nest, twig by twig," Sarah had once seen a weaver build its nest, it was amazing to see, "they are intelligent in the areas they nee to be in, a weaver is brilliant at building good nests for example, yet a weaver in a house would fly around looking for a window that is really write infront of their eyes. Kat took her shoes off her feet and then pulled her socks. Meh, barefoot. Not that it was gross for her... but she didn't want to get dirty. She was a WITCH, though she can just use charms to clean herself up. Pfft. She placed her slingbag under the shade of the tree Elwood pointed out and kept her shoes and socks close to it.
Examining the prints, Kat thought Elwood was making it easy for them. The prints were obvious. "They belong to a bird, Professor," she said. But with no specific breed of birds. Kat was no bird professor. And for the characteristics, Kat judged the way it 'walked'. "It seemed like it was confused since the way the bird walked seems crooked. Or maybe it was feeling adventurous."
Who didn't like adventure anyway? HUH.

Rowan quietly listened to the other students. It was definitely a bird print but the others had already guessed as much. No webbing so probably not a duck. Hmm... She raised her hand and asked, "Professor, could it be a wading bird? Perhaps a Tern or some sort of Crane? I do not see any webbing so I don't think that its a swimming bird."
After having removed her outer robes, her shoes and her socks Nessie gathered where the other students were and looked at the footprints the professor was gesturing too. It was kind of interesting in it's own way, but animal was it?
It had to be a bird right? Only birds had prints like that, no? The question was maybe more what bird was it? Pout. Maybe a magical one? Heh. Ness would be here guessing forever if she wanted to figure what bird it really was. Better to just go with bird. Yep.
The red head raised her hand wanting to answer."It definitely looks like it could be a birds print, Professor." Nod and as for characteristics, Nessie had to think some more. Maybe it had characteristics such as flight? Like wizards could fly with the use of brooms and muggles could fly with the use of airplanes, right? Naaa. That just sounded silly. "Um.. as for characteristics maybe it had um rythm? Cause maybe it was dancing or something?" Okay that was just sillier than the previous idea.Oh well.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Eh? Remove shoes and socks? Daichi raised an eyebrow at the Professors words and he wasn't sure if it was a joke or not. He guessed that it was but once he saw his classmates doing exactly like instructed the Slytherin quickly followed their example and took of his shoes and socks as well.
Once his bare feet hit the sand, he shivered but only a little at the coldness. It wasn't freezing of course since the weather was still nice but the grounds temperature was colder than the air it seemed. He followed the rest while holding a notebook in his hand to scribble down.
When Daichi looked down to examine the print the professor was pointing at his eyes immediately twinkled and he squealed rather loudly in excitement. "THOSE ARE CUTE ADORABLE DUCKIES PRINTS~!" the Prefect answered and already began to look around for the duck. "And It's characteristics are that they are cute, ADORABLE, awesome, fantastic, amazing, aweworthy and and and...." Daichi let out a long shaky breath.
"and if It's not then it is now!" he ended with a humpf and held his arms over each other.
They were coming right? Calista had turned around and checked to be sure that the Giant Squid wasn't lurking nearby at least that she could see and finally saw the end of the line of students approaching.

Doing as she was told, Eliza kicked off her shoes and socks and sat them under the tree. She then tossed her robe aside and grinned at her newfound freedom from uniform. It wasn't that she ddnt care for it, it was just that being outside on school grounds without it was a bit sneaky feeling - which made everything more fun.
She examined the prints on the ground and raised her hand, "I think these are bird prints too. A duck or a seagull or something. A bird that lives near water...so it probably has webbed feet and lots of heavy duty feathers." she hoped that wasn't too obvious, but she really didn't know what else to say.
Oh, human characteristics? Ummm..."Maybe it could be excited, since the prints are kind of all over the place. Maybe it found a worm or something else to eat."Was that what she wanted? Eliza still wasn't quite sure about her answer.

OH! Qualities! Rowan raised her hand for the second time. "If this bird is a wader than one of its greatest attributes would be patience. They can stand very still for a very long time, just waiting for dinner to swim by. Unlike other birds, waders also tend to be solitary, rather than being birds that prefer to be in a flock."

As Belle was taking off her outer robes and shoes, she felt more free. She liked this lesson already. As Belle made her way towards the edge of the lake, Belle has seen those tracks so many times before. They were seen on the beach. Then she asked a question she could not quite understand...

Then once the professor explained the characteristics, now it made more sense. Belle smiled and raised her hand, "Professor i think these tracks came from a small bird. From the looks of the footprints, it looks they were wandering around the lake and looking for food or just roaming the lake. The bird had intelligence because the tracks look light and not pressed into the sand too hard and trying to look for food. I would say patience had to deal with the tracks as well." That was the best answer she could give.

HMMMMM. Characteristics of a bird...duck...thing. Well, they liked bread, Bliss thought, giggling as she remembered her previous trip to the duck pond, where a loaf of bread had disappeared in a matter of minutes. But that wasn't going to happen in today's lesson, so Bliss brought her attention back to the Professor and away from thoughts of pretty ducks. GIGGLE. Very pretty actuallyyyyyy.
OOOOPS. Not again.
Bliss raised her hand, all smiles and happiness. She was quite enjoying herself so far, she just hoped nothing bad happened in this lesson. OH, she needed to give her answer. "I think that some of the characteristics of this creature...duck or bird are....um..." This was harder than she thought. "They are hard working animals, love fun and are quite loyal and protective," she finished and smiled up at the Professor. That sounded like...an adequate answer.
After the bit of clarification on the question she had asked them about the prints in the sand, Calista was starting to get the answers she had expected. Some of them were hinting on good points that she would be discussing next.
SPOILER!!: Replies!!

If it were really a duck then i know i was chased by them as a kid...they either like you or they don't." She shrugged a bit and then just looked up at the Professor.
The mud oozing between her toes made her start to giggle and nearly gag at the same time. She was a fan and not a fan of mud.
Hehe. The girl had been chased by ducks before? How unfortunate.
"Yes very good." Elwood nodded as she took a mental note of the ones she said to be added to a list later. "The ability to swim is what tipped you off to it being a water fowl, more specifically a duck, and the reason that we found these tracks here rather than in, say, a field." Good use of context clues.

Yes, yes. "Very good Miss Bishop, birds can be all of those things." The latter of her suggestions probably fit this particular bird best though.

West took shoes and socks off and put them aside.
Huzzah!
Who would have known that the boy who had just been talking about a made up form of Divination called 'Westomancy' or some other crack-pot idea would have more or less stumbled across a good point. "I'm glad you pointed that out West, something that is very important to this reading." She would be talking about that point in more detail with the rest of the class.

Violet studied them for a moment, while thinking of the Professor's question at the same time.
She tilted her head recognizing those foot patterns. They looked ever so familiar. Violet gasped a little bit smiling, then went on to raise her hand. She said brightly,"Professor, if I am not mistaken, I do believe that those prints are the leavings of a bird indeed..Left from perhaps, a swan?" She then went on,"To which most characteristics I would place with these prints are that perhaps, it was maybe angry..or somehow stressed, because of the sudden change of direction in the prints..Maybe trying to evade danger?"
Despite the Hufflepuff's obvious dislike of having to stand in the mud without shoes, Elwood appreciated her effort in trying to red the footprints without much real instruction yet. "Good job. Although these prints do not belong to a swan, they do belong to a duck another water fowl. And the characteristics of stress and evading danger are both excellent deductions!"

There was, unfortunately, a method of Divination that studied and interpreted the symbols seen in animal....droppings. They were NOT going to be studying it today though. She looked at the young Hufflepuff. "Miss Hyde, yes those are some common physical characteristics that birds have in common with people but unfortunately they won't have much help in our reading."

No thank you. Theo stood on the spot, tapping his foot very lightly on the ground. Course, if he was gonna get into trouble over it, he would probably cower over and take them off, but for now, he was taking a stand. No muddy sand was getting all up in HIS toes.
Onto the prints, his first instinct was dinosaur.
But when everyone else started answering, Theo nodded coolly. "Yeah, that is definitely a bird." He was clever, too. But human characeristics? How could you notice human characteristics from looking at a set of footprints? Theo looked around, cos he was CLEARLY missing something. Oh well, he would go for an obvious answer. "I guess they have toes like us." Yep.
Crystal Ball boy was stepping on the sand...with SHOES ON!
"Dear, please remove your shoes and socks, you may disturb the tracks we will be looking at today." She tried to remain calm. HUUGE crisis averted.
Despite his not hearing the instructions fully, the boy had mentioned a characteristic of the print that could lead him to a bigger point. "They do have only three toes compared to our five, you would say that makes them perhaps less stable on their feet than we are, since they are usually flying, or that they are more frail?" She gave him a little nudge in his thinking.

Quite silently she eyed them, taking it all in. West was right. The bird had no sense of direction. Once she was done with that chocolate frog she spoke up. "I think we can rule out intelligence Professor. The bird doesn't even know where it's going." She stooped so she could get a closer look. "Maybe it was scared senseless by something else too?" Birds get scared. Now the only question was, scared by what?
"Maybe a bit ditzy too."
Ducks weren't exactly stupid but like the Gryffindor said they weren't really considered intelligent.
"Yes Miss Cambridge, it does seem confused and I think there is a good chance it was scared by something because of the shortness of the tracks." The usually hyper and all over the place girl from last term seemed to be working some actual work into her routine, at least so far. Good.

The lioness kicked off her school shoes and stockings, wiggling her toes into the mud. It was SQUISHY.
And now there were footprints, hmm?
Well, everyone had established that it was some kind of bird. Alice couldn't really deduct more than that. "Chickens can't walk straight," she pointed out helpfully. Maybe it was a chicken. "And they get scared easily, too."
Problem solved? SEEMED SO.
Chickens, where?
Calista looked at the girl and then to some of the others who mentioned chickens? Why in Merlin's beard would there be chickens running loose on the Grounds and so close to the Lake. Professor Vanora may have some in the barn by her cottage but surely they weren't free-ranged. "That's an...interesting point Alice."

"Professor this bird possesses intelligence because it seems to know where it's going. It looks like it has patience because we can see that it's not rushing around. It seems to have a purpose maybe in this case, it is looking for food." she paused to think of other possible traits.
"Um... Birds are diligent about cleanliness, because they are always preening themselves. They have a keen sense of eyesight like the Hawk or Eagle does. They like travelling in flocks, although I think in this case, this one may have got separated from his friends." Alysaa shook her sadly looking at the lone bird's foot prints in the sand.
The characteristic of intelligence that Alyssa had mentioned didn't seem to fit quite as well as she hoped with this particular set of prints but a few of the other ones she mentioned were quite intuitive. "I agree with you on the fact that perhaps the bird's keen eye allowed it to see the danger early enough to get away, hence the short tracks? Or the confused-looking path of the prints might seem like a search for food."

"Umm they are winged animals with feathers and beaks." he said as he looked at the prints on the ground. He was right.. right? cause thats the kind of prints birds made in snow and stuff when he looked at them during the winter months. "They are intelligent as well as patient, some are even very observant" like hawks and eagles.. right?
The Ravenclaw boy also mentioned intelligence, which is common for birds like Eagles, hawks, owls, and ravens but not usually water-fowl. "This bird was probably very observant Harvey, I think that is why it's tracks are very short because it probably took flight before whatever it was fleeing from got ahold of it." His answer had started off shaky but definitely ended on a good note.

"Definitely a bird, maybe a songbird or plover? Not a water bird, though. And I would say birds are..." He mused over the right words, picturing a bird in flight in his head before offering a subdued, "Intuitive. Spontaneous. Petty. Quarrelsome. Quick to fly away at first sign of hardship. Untethered, though... you know? Like free?"
This one, although mistaken on the type of bird because of the faintness of the webs on the bird's feet, did have some pretty good characteristics often associated with birds. She tried to remember his name from the roll sheet and remembered that he was the son of the President of the Board of Governors. Huh.
"Yes, very good Mr.." What was that woman's name again? *flail* "Branxton. Although the bird is actually a duck as you can see from the faint webbing between the toes, just there." she pointed, leaning closer to the ground to show him. "your suggestions of intuition, spontaneity, and that they are quick to fly away at the first sign of hardship or danger are excellent and definitely relevant to this particular reading." She grinned and nodded at the Ravenclaw. She would talk more about that when she addressed the rest of the students as a whole.

"As for characteristics, erm...let's go with confused, because I don't think the animal knew exactly where it was going. I think it was just walking all over the place." Maybe it was being chased...
...or maybe there were just too many ponds.
Oh there was Sierra, Callie must have missed her when she had arrived back in the classroom. And she was talking about Bigfoot. Siigh. The girl was able to at least match her attitude and random comments with hard work and success in her lessons. She was happy to see that she was continuing with her NEWT studies in Divination.
"The prints are a duck, Miss Greingoth." She said brightly as she pointed to the frequently missed webbing in the prints, and then allowed her to finish her thoughts. "Confusion is a very good characteristic to notice because it is most likely exactly what had happened."

"Very good Prefect Gunter. It is in fact a duck, and according to these prints the duck was rather confused before it's sudden take off." She pointed to the tracks as she spoke, glad that he had picked up on those things.

She relunctantly took off her shoes and craned her neck to see the set of prints that the professor was talking about. "Some type of bird, I'd say. As for characteristics I's say agile."
"Agile..." Professor Elwood thought that word over in her head. Yes, many birds were agile in the air when they flew but ducks were usually more clumsy and just flew in a straight line, not really being known for their dive-bombs and loops in the air. But the water! "Agile would work, these tracks are for a duck and they are quite good in the water."

"Aggression?" Chickens were known for their aggressiveness, after all.
"Agression could work, it is a characteristic given to many birds." Elwood paused and pointed back to the tracks. "However, as you can see there are no other tracks or prints of an animal for this bird to be aggressive towards." Good answer though.

...but then she was clarifying.
Oh. Human-like characteristics...
Clearing his throat, Dylan smirked. "Well, there are TWO of them. That's pretty human-like." Taking a closer look, he shrugged. "They aren't rushed...The tracks are fully formed...So...Patience, like you mentioned?"
Also, when had Ravvie!Odessa shown up...?
Ahem.

Yes, the Slytherin Captain had noticed they were bird prints, a good start.

"Selina." Callie had NOT expected that answer from the Head Girl and as a student who had visited her office regularly and knew that she owned a blue and yellow parrot.

Did that even sound right.. Minerva wasn't sure, but she was just guessing.
Not very smart, medium sized. Yes.
As for the not webbed bit. "Miss Wheatborn, if you look a tad bit closer you can see the outline, although faint, of the bird's webbed feet. Easy to miss so don't fell bad. But I do agree one hundred percent with you on the bird's intelligence and size."

The next student to speak up was one she recognized from the small group of older students who had been sorted during the Feast. This one was related to Max.
As he spoke Callie nodded along with a grin. He seemed to know what he was talking about or he was at least very good at making things up. "Very good Mr. Vindictus, I especially like your notice of where the bird landed starting out prints." A details person.

Calista was a little confused by the Gryffidor's answer and was wondering if he saw the same prints she did. "I wouldn't go as far as to say all of that, dear. Good guess though." Those prints couldn't be that old they were in sand and would have been washed away within the next hour or so and that would be a stretch. They would have to be fossilized to last as long as this boy had mentioned.

It kind of looked a bit bird-like, but maybe it's a... duck." But there looks like it could be a decent amount of weight, unless the feet are just sharp and dug down that deep..." She trailed off, just completely lost.
Not a reptile...good. Oh and she had it, it was a duck!
"Very good deductive work. The prints are from a duck and they do waddle." She had smiled a bit when she mentioned her uncle and firewhiskey but the girl was definitely on the right track.

She bit her upper lip to think what other characteristics birds have in common with people. "Uhm.... birds can be tedious? I mean they do pick off seeds one at time."

"Freedom is a very common trait associated with birds Miss Phillips, and I think that freedom is what this bird was searching for in the respect that it was trying to get away from something." She pointed to the shortness of the tracts.

Dancing? Calista really liked that answer despite it's very unlikely nature. She smiled brightly when she spoke the Hufflepuff Prefect. "Unfortunately I don't think his duck was dancing. Although that would be an interesting sight."

Woah. O____O
Calista had figured the kids would be a bit wired up from the chocolate and getting to go outside but she hadn't thought it would get this bad. She looked at the Slytherin Prefect as she shouted about the duck and all it's awesomeness with raised eyebrows. "Uhh, yes very good Mr. Katheros they are duck prints." She was kind of glad the bird wasn't there...you know, for it's safety.

"It is definitely a water bird, a duck to be exact." She started with a smile since the girl seemed to be on the right track. "And excitement is a good way to describe it. Another thing to look at would be another type of excitement or anxiousness, the bird being scared."

"Very good. I think that the bird was taking it's time too, using it's patience until it was disturbed by whatever it was that caused it to fly away." The Hufflepuff prefect was definitely on the right track.

OOOOPS.
A more literal characteristic match but still good nonetheless. "Very good, I think that those attributes are good ones to be given to this bird."
"Excellent everyone I think that you all have a good idea of what characteristics and attributes are given to birds when people compare them to humans." She leaned up from the prints and allowed for everyone to look back at her so she could begin telling them what it was that she had seen and to explain.
But something seemed to be going on with a couple of students who weren't paying attention.
SPOILER!!: Captain Montmorency and Aspen "Creepy" Odessa

No, really, squinted.
In this scenario, she was the Giant Squid and the Slytherin Dylan was prey. She was sizing him up. Sizing his feet up. Sizing his brows up.
"You answer questions with questions." Just by the way. Everything with him ended in him not being sure.
She waited for him to ask, "I do?" and prove her point.

Stare.
"It really wasn't a question. I apologize if it sounded that way."...and then he grinned. Dylan could do that when she wasn't too close.

"I also apologize that you think that."
Were they going to have a staring match, now? Merlin, Aspen Odessa was hard to figure out.
Squint.
"And speaking of birds..." Professor Elwood said allowed to the whole class as she raised a hand to point at the Ravenclaw and Slytherin in the back of the group making eyes at each other. "What is going on with these two love birds? Mr. Montmorency and Miss Odessa, if you two could please remove your eyes from staring into each others and please look up here at me or the prints I would appreciate it." She hated to break up whatever little session they were in the middle of but she had Ichnomancy to teach.
--------------------
Okay back to the real stuff. "Alright so you all had great ideas for what you believed had happened with the bird that left these prints behind. What I believe to have happened goes along with many of the things you mentioned." She cleared her throat before crouching down to point as she spoke. "Right here, like Mr. Vindictus pointed out is where the duck landed. It was rather confused for some reason, either because that was its nature or that it was searching for food, it was confused and wondered around all over the place, like Mr. Odessa first suggested." She paused and looked up at them. "The nature in which an animal or person walks is called gait. Gait, when studying tracks and prints is one of the biggest hints as to what the person or animal was experiencing when leaving behind the prints."
"After walking around confused for a few steps something scared it, perhaps the Giant Squid appeared nearby or a a thestral appeared out of the forest. Either way the bird took off here to avoid the danger or situation like Mr. Branxton and Miss Hardwike suggested." And that was what must have happened. She liked that they all had very similar thoughts to her own.
She stood up and clasped her hands together. "Now how do you think this applies to an actual study of Divination rather than just tracking something? Well when a person is on a journey or a walk and they come across some prints they can interpret how their own journey will go according to the one taken by the animal that left behind the prints. So for instance if I was walking along and I found these duck prints I could assume that my journey would be a rather confused, short one before I had to turn back or change directions due to a hazard." See, simple really.
"So what I would like for you to do is walk around and try and find some other prints and interpret them as if you were out hiking or on a walk." Because they really were kind of.
OOC: In order to do this I would like for you to pick one of the following three set of prints. Just try and figure out like I had Callie do with the duck ones and apply it to your character's own journey. How would it turn out like the animals? Just try, obviously there's no EXACT answer. Be creative and have fun! You can do it all in one good post. Prints = Deer, Cat, and snakes.

Reason: Yeah...I can spell.
Taylor listen to the professor as she explained the duck track. Tay was actually really interested in this lesson as compared to the past lessons... perhaps enough to talk to the professor later to learn more or to talk more in depth about the subject. Tay turned to look at the 'lovebirds' then glanced back the professor. That would be embarassing to be called out like that... but they deserve it since they weren't listening... hopefully the girl doesnt lose points... She sighed at the thought and then listen to the teacher as she explained how you can fortell your future from the tracks. Taylor smiled as the professor told them to go look for some and interept them. Tay wandered around for a little bit before stopping and looking at snake tracks. Confusion came to her causing her to wrinkle her nose. Taylor glanced at how it curved back and glanced around to see where it went or where it came from. It turned around... going back to where it came from... so perhaps it thought it had a better life back where it started from... but how does it relate to me... Tay thought about it and her face showed the amount of focus that she had. All of a sudden, her mouth dropped and her thoughts got rushed. ohmygosh...coulditmeanthatiwillgobacktodatingBrodi e??? Taylor took a deep breath and a blush rose onto her cheeks, making it a little obvious what she was thinking and how she felt about it. I hope I interpet those right but what do I tell the teacher if she asked? I cant tell her that can I? It is a bit personal and I dont want Harvey or anyone to know... but that is the only thing that it could mean, right? I mean the snake turned back and if I give Brodie a second chance... I will be turning back so that would connect to the animal... Tay sighed and glanced around, seeing if she could find anything else but she couldnt.
