Default Divination Lesson 1

Divination Lesson 1

A new term meant a new term full of new students (and returning ones) and new subjects to be discovered. Calista had decided to keep the Divination classroom like it was decorated at the end of the year before, with the heavy curtains pulled back from the windows to allow fresh air and sunlight fill the room and land on the raised platform of desks arranged in a semi-circle facing her desk.

She had placed a chocolate frog on each desk as a welcome back to school gift but they shouldn't get used to it, she wasn't made of money. The blonde had written her name on the board with a flick of her wand and was now sitting, crossed-legged on her desk waiting for the students to popped their heads and then bodies through the trapdoor.

OOC: The lesson won't begin for another 6-7 hours from this post so there is plenty of time to post your student arriving. The lesson has BEGUN so no arriving late please, just pretend you've been there all along. Be sure to read the Classroom rules before posting, which are located here in the main Divination Sub-Forum. The lesson will be updated with post links as it progresses. Have fun!

SPOILER!!: Replies

It appeared she did not have to wait too long for the kids to begin showing up. The first person to peek their head into the room from the door in the floor was a little, unfamiliar Gryffindor. "Hi there, welcome to Divination sweetie." Callie was happy to see that she had chosen a seat up front.

Alyssa? She was back? Huh.

Professor Elwood smiled and answered the Hufflepuff's greeting. "It's good to see you again too Miss Potter, I was pleased with your OWL." She was happy that even though the girl had taken time off of school that she was able to still work on her exams.

After the girl took her seat she had thanked her for the candy. "Not a problem dear, just a welcome back gift."

"Good morning to you too Laura." The blonde smiled at the girl but was suddenly a bit worried about the smile and rummaging in her bag the mischievous Puff was doing. Oh she had gotten her chocolates, how ironic.

"Ah thank you, when you take your seat you'll see I got you some as well. Call it a fair trade?" She grinned. The apology gift was received and she nodded along at the question of her summer.

The next person to enter the classroom was one of the redhead Quidditch Captains...and she was obviously very excited about the chocolate frogs. "No worry, Captain Dixon they're just my little welcome back gifts to you guys so yes you may eat them. I know how wonderful chocolate is so I understand your excitement." It was a fine snack after all.

What was that cheeky grin for?

Calista smiled back at the new Gryffindor Prefect as he entered the room. "Hello to you too Jake, congratulations on the Prefect's badge. My summer was good, I hope your's was the same?" It was good to see that even the new student leaders were taking her class.

And the first Claw to arrive, how exciting.

"Good morning Mr. McCarthy, it's good to see you again. I was very happy to see your OWL mark." She grinned. It was just wonderful to see the students succeed in her class. "My summer was lovely, I hope your's was too."

"Hello there." Callie greeted the very cheerful Snake. The girl was usually quite chipper but today she seemed overly excited. First day back jitters or she perhaps just was really excited for Divination (which Callie hoped was the case because she was too).

And who was this young thing?

Calista couldn't help but notice the girl seemed a tad more clueless than the others and it was just adorable really. "Good morning to you too dear." She said with a quick wink from her perch on the desk. She almost giggled at the sight of the young Ravenclaw trying to figure out the chocolate frog.

Another Hufflepuff, Professor Elwood had noticed how they seemed to really enjoy her lessons for some reason.

"Hello there, I did have quite a good summer." Better than last year's by a mile. "And you're welcome, I thought it would be a nice way of welcoming you all back." Everyone could use a little sweet before a lesson.

"Hello dear, and I did thank you." Her summer had been great but she was glad to be back and ready to teach all of them about the Noble Art of Divination.

"Hello Miss Wheatborn, it's good to see you again. My summer was lovely, thanks for asking." Callie watched her cheerfully pick out a seat and then thank her for the candy.

A rather confused looking Hufflepuff arrived next from the trapdoor and greeted her. "Hello, welcome. And my summer was awesome, thanks for asking." She chuckled. It was so good to be back around all of them again, kids were just so funny. It was like they weren't even trying.

"You're welcome." The chocolate seemed to be good in their books.

"Hi dear." Callie said as another Claw entered the class and took a seat. This one had been the first to ask if the treats on the desks were for them to enjoy or for part of the lesson and she was happy to see that she was a traditional Ravenclaw, always questioning things. "Yes, those are for you guys to snack on before we get started or later if you'd prefer. Just a little welcome and welcome back gift."

Ooh a familiar face. "Welcome back Bliss, good to see you again. My holiday was great thanks." She smiled and waved to the girl as she took a seat.

This boy was not a happy camper today, Elwood could tell. She wondered what had gotten his wand in a knot but she wasn't going to push him. "Hello there." She greeted him anyways.

Another obviously new student. "Hello there, welcome to Hogwarts." Professor Elwood said as she watched the girl take her chair.

Ah the seventh year Hufflepuff Prefect was next to arrive. "Welcome back Belle, and my summer was wonderful, thank you." She watched her take her seat, excited to see her reaction to the chocolate frog....one she had hoped for. "You're absolutely welcome, dear."

Selina was here! Professor Elwood waved excitedly as the Gryffindor Quidditch Captain--wait, no she had a new badge on her robes. What was that....? Oh! "Good morning Selina and I guess congratulations are in order as well." She was Head Girl, how exciting. She's had two of her favorite students in that position now.

Just as she was going to suggest they meet for lemonade in her office soon now that term had started Selina had shrieked at something, causing Elwood to stand up from her desk and hop over to the girl. "What's wrong, Selina are you okay?!" She hadn't seen the chocolate frog being thrown across the room but she had heard the screams of getting the chocolate away from her and such." Oh. Whoops?

"I'm soooo sorry dear, I didn't know you weren't a fan of chocolate." Who didn't like chocolate? It was quite strange really. "Here..." she said going back to her desk and pulling out a licorice wand and giving it to the freaked Head Girl. "Have this instead." And now hopefully people who had been about to enter the room hadn't gotten scared and run off.

Still standing near Selina to ensure that she didn't have another blow-up and pass out or something over her little idea of welcoming them all back, Callie heard another Lion greet her. "Hello dear..." she said a tad distracted, giving her a small wave. She had joined her and Selina however and had taken the chocolate frog and seemed to have solved the problem. Oh thank Merlin. "Thanks." She said quietly as she went to take her spot back on top of the desl.

And there was little Miss Cambridge. "Hello Miss Cambridge good to see you again--" and she too was freaking out over the chocolate except this time it was a good freak out. A bit taken aback but still very excited that she liked it, Calista told her she was welcome and then awkwardly tried to ignore as she and the other Gryffinfor who had taken the frog from Selina fought over what to do with it.

She didn't have extras.

Another new student, or at least to Divination entered the classroom next. Callie hadn't seen her around the Castle but that didn't really mean much. But she was introducing herself...and had an apple for her? Aww.

"Thanks Miss Pillsbury and I'm glad, I've got a bunch of fun stuff planned." She had never been brought an apple before but she felt even more like a real teacher now. WOOT!

Aww another eager newbie to Divination.

Callie smiled and nodded as the little first year introduced herself and thanked her for the chocolate. "It's nice to meet you and you are more than welcome for the treat. I hope you enjoy it and the lesson."

"Welcome back Miss Bishop and my summer was wonderful thanks for asking." Professor Elwood greeted the returning Puff as she entered the class and took her seat. "And you're quite welcome." For the chocolate, she was happy she had given it to them apart for Selina who had freaked out.

"Jory, welcome back! Happy with your OWL mark?" She had been glad to see what he had received and her asking if he had been the same was just her way of saying good work. "Glad to see you taking Divination on for NEWT. Welcome back." She grinned and gave him a 'not a problem' wave at mention of the chocolate.

A young Lion entered next and like the others greeted her and thanked her for the chocolate frog. "Hello there and you're welcome." she said quickly. She looked at the clock on the wall. They were getting close to start time.

A new Puff it seemed.

"Welcome Susan, it's nice to meet you too." She had been told she was a nice person to meet, yep she had. Hopefully the girl would enjoy the lesson she had planned. "Oh, you're welcome, just a welcome treat for you all."

The next person to enter the tower classroom was male Greingoth twin, Alex. "Hello Alex." Callie waved to him at his seat. She wondered where his sister was and if she would be joining them today.

And then another Lion, this one wearing Selina's old Captian badge. "Good day Alice, congrats on the Captainship." She had some big shoes to fill and she had good faith in her. The blonde giggled as she watched Alice take the chocolate frogs from her friends and steal the cards. *snort*

"Hello there Eliza, welcome back." She waved at the Ravenclaw as she entered the class and took a seat. "You're welcome." She said in reply to the chocolate comment. The girl had always given great answers during class so hopefully today's lesson wouldn't be an exception.

Hmmm, no greeting?

Fine. Calista wasn't going to say anything either. Instead she just gave the Slyterin a quick little nod as she passed the desk.

"Good morning Anya." Professor Elwood said as she waved to the most recently arrived Gryffindor. She had attended her lessons for a while now and had shown some good work in the past. "And they are, you're more than welcome to start snacking on it now."

"Welcome, welcome Oakey." Callie eyed the Hufflepuff as he entered the room. He had a shiney new badge on his robes too but she didn't say anything just yet because he had taken a seat beside the new Ravenclaw girl who hadn't known what to do with her chocolate frog. Aww he was giving her his!? That Prefect badge was sooo right on him, it was!

"My summer was well and good day." Callie waved at the newest Ravenclaw to enter and take a seat.

"Welcome back Oichi." Elwood greeted the Lion as she entered the class and found a seat.

"Good morning." Calista wasn't so sure the girl really wanted to be there or cared who she was according to the way she had addressed her but no matter, she would have fun. Yep, she would.

"Hi there." The Divination professor was getting anxious to start the lesson already.

"Hello there dear. Welcome." The blonde watched the girl take her seat and admire the chocolate frog before setting up her notes. "You're welcome."

"Welcome, welcome." Callie greeted the girl with a bright smile and a wave. She placed a strand of her blonde hair behind her ear as she looked at the clock. She was brought back to looking at the girl when she thanked her for the chocolate. "Oh you're welcome, hope you like it."

The rungs on the ladder leading up to the classroom were making noise as another student made their way up through it. The girl who appeared was a Snake and more than out of breath. "Are you alright dear?" What had she run all the way up from the Dungeons?!

And she was just about to start her lesson. She pulled her wand out from a pocket in her flowwy skirt to conjure the trapdoor shut but one more head popped through, the one belonging to the Sytherin Quidditch Captain, one who had received an O on his Divination OWL. EEK!

"Ah, glad to see you could make it Mr. Montmorency." She grinned as he pulled the rest of himself in and took his seat. She shut the door behind him and returned to the desk. "You're welcome dear and Good morning." She returned his greeting. He seemed happy this morning.

So the classroom was rather full when the clock struck the time for the lesson to begin. Calista Elwood was very pleased with the amount of students in attendance and hoped that they would all stay on to tackle the subject throughout the term.

Continuing to sit right there cross-legged on the desk she addressed them all. "Welcome everyone to the first Divination Lesson of the term. I'm Professor Elwood for those of you who are new to Hogwarts or just Divination this term and I am excited to lead you all into the Beyond this year." She paused to allow that awesome and exciting journey prospect to sink in.

She wiggled after a second of quiet thinking after receiving an unexpected vibe but then spoke once more as if nothing had happened. "Right so I know we are all up here in the Divination Tower but I want today's lesson to be held outdoors since it is so nice on the Grounds." And she might get a glimpse of the Groundskeeper while out there The blonde had wanted them all to meet here for a few reasons, to get the role done correctly, make sure everyone knew where the classroom and her office were and to not give away the topic of the lesson before they even started. And no, torturing the kids by making them walk up all the stairs and then back down them to the Grounds was not one of the reasons she was starting here.

"So to begin, I would like you all to think of some forms of Divination we could be doing outside today and share them with the class. No answers are stupid answers." Elwood said cheerfully as she gestured fluidly to the windows. Taaaa-daaaa, OUTDOORS!

OOC: The lesson has officially begun, so no arriving late please. If you post now just pretend your character has been there all along. Thanks!

A type of divination they might be doing outdoors? Well...lots of her classmates had already suggested things she would have picked too. Oh! Like the cloud watching one, Ella liked that idea. She wouldn't mind laying in the grass watching the clouds all class. She tried her best to think of other options too...Hm

"Professor, what about anthomancy? That's erm...the one using flowers, yeah?" Ella liked flowers. ^____^

Harvey sat there as he listened to the professor as she introduced herself and then he smiled as she said they would be going out into the grounds today, at this point he coincedently looked at Ella... and.. was she blushing? He wondered what had brought that wonderful color to her face, well.. as long as something made her happy then he was too.. anyways what was the professor saying. Oh yes! the grounds.. he put up his hand "Professor we looked at bird formations once in a bowl of water.. it was called.. erm.. Orni.. Ornito.. Ornithomancy.. I think it was" he finally answered and put his hand down as he remembered that one particular lesson. It was a little tough to get a grasp of but he had done it in the end finally

"Thank you, Professor. That is very kind of you," Rowan replied and took a seat. She'd never had a chocolate frog before and wasn't quite sure what to make of it.

OOO! Outside! Rowan's favorite place in the world. With a big grin on her face and hoping this was indeed not a stupid answer, she raised her hand. "Looking for shapes in the clouds? Like reading tea leaves...sort of."

She joked and winked at Ethan before seeing the chocolate frogs, "Oh a chocolate frog, thanks Professor."
Ethan had watched Minerva as she walked into the classroom, giving her a smile as she approached. "Just saving it for a pretty Hufflepuff girl I know," he said with a little grin directed at her. "Glad she could join me."

The boy gave Eliza a little wave as she entered the classroom and greeted him. Then his eyes turned wide upon hearing a scream in the room. What.. was happening? Swiftly turning his head in the direction of the sound, he tried to understand what was going on. It was the candy?

Still trying to make sense of how a piece of chocolate could elicit that sort of response, Ethan turned his slightly confused gaze back to Professor Elwood as she started class, beaming at her OWL remark. Outdoors.. Well, yes it was a nice day.. but they had just gotten here. As in walked up flights of stairs to be here. And now they would have to turn around and walk down the many flights of stairs to the grounds? He supposed that was where the chocolate frog came in. Definite bribery so no one would complain too much about that part. Well.. it would work for him..

And now it was time to guess the lesson. Ethan really hated when professors asked the students what they would be learning. Wasn't it part of their job to be telling them? The sixth year had half a mind to raise his hand and answer Legilimency, since it seemed the professors wanted them to read their minds.. but it seemed to him that it would be something of a smart-alecky response and he wasn't about to disrespect the lovely Ms. Elwood.

Instead, the boy half-heartedly listened to the other guesses and thought for a moment about another form of Divination that someone hadn't already said and would most likely be done outside. "Maybe a form of Capnomancy, Professor?" Ethan offered after raising his hand. Because if they burned anything, it probably wouldn't be done in the classroom. It would definitely be too smoky in here to read anything.

Mom says I have no sense of direction, so I packed my bags and right.

Nope Oakey no clue what type of Fortune Telling they would be doing outdoors, he like Divinations, and Professor Elwood made the classes very interesting. He'd venture a guess at least, and from what he was hearing there was a lot of mancy's being thrown out there. maybe he'll get lucky just once and call out a correct one. "Nimbus...mancy." Oakey guessed putting the two words together. "It's Fortune telling by looking at cloud shapes, like if a cloud were shaped like a bunny, then you'd have a good day."

Genius Oakey! Genius! If that wasn't a real form of Outdoor Fortune Telling, you may have just created a new one. He smiled at himself.

Thanks!

Dylan looked around as a few more people freaked out over the chocolate frogs on their desks, sheesh it was just chocolate! Not that it was a bad thing Selina, cause moving frogs that you meant to eat could be a bit freaky he understood that. But was it really that bad that there were others apart from Selina that didnt like those yummy treats? Well maybe they should give him the frogs then, oh wait others were STEALING them! He knew he should have sat nearer to one of those that were scared of the frogs, now he had only one not counting the whole heap of frogs in his trunk that he stocked up on over summer and on the train ride here and some had two.. that was not fair!

He was about to comment on this unfairness when the professor started talking and told them that they would be going outside, this made him perk up. They would whatnow?!! COOL!! He loved the outdoors.. maybe he could have one of his little fun times outside.. mm what could he do? His thought process was interrupted by the professor asking them a form of divination, he only knew a few and those had already been said. Star stuff cant be done now cause it was broad daylight so that was out.. mmm "Maybe you throw a rock and see how many times it bounces.. and the number of bounces tells you ..something" what! he didnt know anymore so he made one up.. so what! He looked around the room in case anyone was looking at him, dont you look at me like that now. At least I answered the question.. she said no wrong answers!, he then looked outside as he couldnt wait to get outside!

"Glad you had a good summer Professor!" Belle smiled. She was glad she heard her politeness and was glad to give away free chocolate frogs. They were Belle's favorite treat.

Belle's eyes widened when she heard they were going outside. She loved the prospect of exploring the grounds than being in a classroom. Then the professor asked a question, What type of divination would they be learning outside? Belle had no idea...but she could guess. Belle raised her hand, "Professor will be learning about the nature elements like the sun, earth, fire and water and they helps us determine our future such as Tarot Cards?"

Outside? But we just got UP here! She grunted silently at the thought of taking the stairs again so soon. Hopefully we can just take our stuff and leave from downstairs once class is finished. She wasn't feeling particularly peppy today. Most days the stairs really didn't bother her.

There had been so many answers given already, Eliza wasn't sure what to say. Most of what she'd thought of had been said as well as others she had never even heard of. I should really review my textbook... she thought as she scribbled down some of the things mentioned.

She raised her hand a bit timidly and added to the bunch, "What about a type of divination having to do with water - like reading the ripples and waves in a lake or a puddle?" She put her hand down and waited for a response. That could be a type right?

Oh no! They had to back down the ladder, Susan thought she really should get started on doing push-ups if she wanted to be able to get to and from class easier. Susan slowly followed the professor and the rest of the down the ladder. Susan figured she would be last so she wouldn't slow anyone up.

Then Susan remembered they were suppose to be thinking about what they could study outside. Well you studies stars in Divination right? Well it was light outside so no stars. Wait wasn't the sun a star? "Could we be studying the position of the sun?" Wait wasn't that to determine the time of day? Well the professor said no stupid answers...hopefully she was speaking the truth.

Right. There were OWLs this term which meant she needed to focus. Focus. Focus.

She picked up her quill and played with it as she listened to the professor speak. The lesson was going to be outdoors? She hoped it didn't get chilly outside or anything because she didn't bring an extra sweater. The Gryffindor blinked her eyes a few times at the question. Divination that they could do... outside?

"Aeromancy?" Melanie offered, raising her hand. "That's divination using clouds right?" Because she had heard of something like that from her cousin complaining about classes all the time.

"Or we can nap outside." And yes. She really was going to suggest that every term until they did.

And yeah... it totally had something to do with divination. ... probably.

"Floromancy." He offered. They'd tackled the subject on OWLs...So, it seemed legit.

...Except... they were going to the grounds? Jake walked up all the stairs for nothing? He looked down at his desk, frowning slightly for a second before looking back up. Raising his hand, he answered. "Xylomancy?" Was that what it was called? He remembered learning something back at Durmstrang... "It's using twigs."

OH. OH NO WAIT. It was xylomancy. Darn it.

Oh, well. She'd let that one go. There were still other ideas out there, right? "And there's some form consisting of reading bird's actions.. something like.." Alice rubbed her temples, wracking her brain for an answer. "Or.. Ornittamolancy.. NO. NO. It's.. um.. Ornithomancy?!" Well? Was that one right? Her fingers were crossed. She remembered making the wagons as well, but she didn't know any professor that had done the same lesson yet since she had been at Hogwarts, so she assumed they wouldn't be doing that either.

Thinking Minerva put her hand up, "Professor could be be looking at cloud formation or bird formation." She knew they both meant something with Divinations, because she remembered learning about them with other professors, so it seemed like a good guess since it was an outside activity.

"Professor, what about anthomancy? That's erm...the one using flowers, yeah?" Ella liked flowers. ^____^

Forms of Divination that they could do outdoors? There's the cloud watching thingy but some of his classmate already mentioned that. What else? Hmm. "What about the one that using trees, Professor?" What's they called it again? "Dendromancy?" Or was it Treemancy? No he's pretty sure its dendromancy.

WHY did it have to be all complicated? Why couldn't it just be chocolate? No, chocolate frogs had to get all fancy and terrifying.

But she was breathing and reciting her little calming technique poem that Kurumi had written them to breath. Chocolate frogs can not hurt you... not a bit... they only attack you if you throw a fit... so take a breath and remember this... THROW THEM IN THE SUN SO THOSE LITTLE BUTTHEADS MELT!

...See? Nice and calming. With her breath under control, she opened her eyes and smiled at Elwood, "I'm okay now... OH LICORICE WAND!" Yum. Yeah, she could totally rock that candy. It was so yummy. With her mouth full of licorice, she said, "Thanks Professor."

With everyone around her eating chocolate frogs, Selina kept reminding herself that she was safe in her bubble. She would just throw them all out in the sun to die if the chocolate frogs came anywhere near her. Terrifying little buggers. But she reigned herself back in to pay attention to Elwood. When the woman said that they would be going outdoors Selina beamed, THAT MEANT THAT THE CHOCOLATE WOULD MELT. Awesome.

Oh and she also had to answer a form of divination that was commonly associated with the outdoors. Well, Selina could think of a ton of them off of the top of her head, but Elwood was usually really creative and did stuff outside of the box. Not that she needed to... AHEM. Because of reasons.

Raising her hand, she answered, "Are we going to be studying austromancy?" It was the use of winds in Divination... it was kind of cool form of a Divination. She had read about it over the summer in her, well, outside studies... yeah.

"As nephomancy is a form of Aeromancy - where you use cloud formations in nephomancy to detect patterns and possible outcomes." She smiled. "I know that Aeromancy studies both the wind patterns and cloud shapes and what not...its super super fun." She smiled. Of course it was fun because thats what she had been told about when her mum healed fwoopers that summer.

One thing the red head couldn't get over was all those stairs she had to climb to get here. Especially from ALL the way from the dungeons. Waaaah! Dear Merlin, how was she going to survive this whole year? Why couldn't they install elevators or those cool moving stair she likes playing on in muggle malls? It'd make this Baltazar's life waaaay easier.

Peyton was flicking at the corners of the chocolate frog pack, making it spin on her desk. Then something Professor Elwood said caught her attention and she slowly raised her head.

O___O

They were going back down those HORRIBLE stairs right after her legs were resting. Was this a a joke?... And would someone give her and piggy-back ride, pleeeease? ^__^

Hmm. She'd keep this chocolate frog and give it to someone else in exchange of a piggy-back ride. Hehe.

Ooooh! Question tiiiime! Peyton listened to a few of her classmates before answering. Divination was not this third year's area. Goooosh. Everything ended with 'ancy'. You'd think that'd make it easier for Peyton to remember the titles of Divination forms, but unfortunately, one thing went through one ear and came out the other.

Positive side to this. She managed to remember one...sort of. Peyton raised her hand and said, "Erm, there's...Alec...mancy... No, wait. It's Alectryomancy..." Yeah. That was it, riiiight???

At the professor's question. James took a minute to think of an answer before raising his hand "Professor, can Astronmancy be counted? Its like Astrology but it only focuses on the movement of the stars - unlike Astrology which also looks at planets and stuff."

Yup. And stuff.

Divination outside? Hmmm....The red head pouted for a short well. "Professor, maybe something with birds, or the clouds, or the water in the lake?" Yeah no she wasn't going to use all those long worded terminology. Simple wording was easier.

A wink and a smile to go with the greeting back. See this is why this little girl just loved women Professors other than the fact that they were the only kinds she had her whole life. Just when she was pulling out a corner of the box there was this SHRIEKING coming from the red-badged-cookie-person, which startled the young Claw so much so that she dropped the box momentarily back on the table...

The red-badged-cookie-shrieking-person apparently didnt like the little boxes.

Aquila picked it up again, now even more curious what was inside them. She has discovered nothing but good things when she got to Hogwarts-- what could possibly be about these boxes that got the red-head be so upset about? It was then that she looked up and realized that a yellow robed person joined her at her table--and ohh look! He had a shiny badge too!

Soulful brown eyes widens when he gave his little box to her. "Oh Thank you!" she replied gratefully, even if she still had no clue what was in them. And it was rather clear on her face too, as she kept turning the boxes over between her hands.

*****

Oh, they were going outside for a lesson. Wonderful! Just like it was back home. But now a question what are they going to learn outside? Others have mentioned the divination of the clouds, but there was something she knew that the Priestesses practiced with regularity. Raising her hand she replied "Professor Elwood.... there is something we do back home where we would study the winds-- we would listen to it and observe the direction and strength of where its blowing, and throw dust or seeds to study wind patterns. My teacher said its called Anemoscopy."

Divination they could do outside? Wait! Did that mean they had to go DOWNSTAIRS again?! But the Slytherin's AND Hufflepuff's just came from that direction! He would have just shrugged, and eaten it anyway, but his Ravenclaw co-Prefect had caught his attention by scooting away from her desk. With a knowing look, Spike pulled a paper bag from his pocket, and deftly swapped it with the frog. "Swapsies?" he said to Beezus with a wink. She'd probably guess before looking that the bag contained sugar quills. Spike's pockets always contained some sort of candy (he needed it to get through the dull classes), and it'd become a bit of a joke that he was one of her main sources of sugar quills.

And with that sorted, he turned back to the Professor. All guesses were being accepted? Well, in that case Spike could be hopefully inventive, right? With a grin, Spike raised his hand. "Arachnimancy, Professor? The art of using the walking patterns of spiders to understand the future?"

...or was that only relevant if there was a Basilisk nearby?

See, students always had this idea that Divination was hard and yet they were all doing pretty well at a slight form of predicting their future. You just need to try!

The blonde pointed at each student as they raised their hand and gave an answer nodding as they spoke but shaking her head with a small smile each time. She had giggled when Anya mentioned taking naps--that poor girl always was tired. And she informed those who asked about Xylomancy (Twigs) and Belomancy (arrows) that they had already learned those methods last term and the one before that, her Ogham Staves lesson. "Those are all great answers of things we could do outside, just not what I have planned for this morning."

"Cloud, water, insect, wind, tree and wood Divinations are all wonderful guesses." Yes, good kids, perhaps they could do some of those next term.

SPOILER!!: Things you TECHNICALLY could do outside hehe

You could use them outside. All you needed was a pack of cards you could carry or fit in a coat pocket.

Ummm...perhaps Elwood should have phrased her question a tad differently but surely the kids would have realized if she was going to have them all trek all the way out to the Grounds they would be doing something that she couldn't just pull supplies for out of her closet.

"Good try guys but tarot card, crystal ball, and tea leaf readings could all be done right here." Even though it would be nice outdoors, sometimes you needed a quiet, closed space like her classroom to do those--especially Crystallomancy where you usually needed darkness (but her set of crystal balls had been smashed last term so that one was completely out of the question).

Oh? And nothing is a stupid answer? WELL THEN.

West put his hand up.

"Westomancy." Paaause. "The one where you do whatever West tells you to do." That was him, fyi. "You can do that anywhere. Inside or outside."

Just saying.
Wesomancy?

Calista tried to think of what that would be but she couldn't remember anything in her studies. Was it possible that a student, one of this boy's age and without her ever seeing him in one of her lesson's before, would know about a form of Divination she didn't know herself?

Not likely. But this 'West' would be telling them what to do? By the look on the boy's face and the chuckles from his classmates she had a feeling what he was doing. And different.

Now, forms of divination? Her mouth opened and closed a few times. She had no idea... She slowly raised her hand, "Er Professor could you perhaps be able to use the elements outdoors, say soil, flowers, air... that sort of stuff, for Divination?" She knew it wasn't a FORM but it was all she had. She didn't want to give NO answer.

So Divination that can be done outside. "Ambulomancy, Professor?" Kat said. It could be. "It's a kind of divination that involves walking and we are going to go outside right?" They'll be walking... but running was better. And FLYING was the best. Quidditch, FTW.

And chocolate was a major NO NO if she didn't want to grow antlers. Ugh, she was allergic to it!

And so, eyeing it as though it was the most terrifying thing in the world right now, she subconsciously lent her ears when the woman spoke up and welcome them.

She was going to lead them to the Beyond? Meh. If there were chocolate frogs to there, then the Ravenclaw won't go. No, thank you.

Outdoors, she said? Beezus flailed inwardly. It was the bestest idea right now, anything to be away from the chocolate frogs which apparently were all over the classroom, in each desks....she saw their number when she took a glance about the room. SHUUUUDDER. Hopefully...see Mr. Groundskeeper too.

Then came the guessing game again.

Meh. She'd been noticing this lately. Their Professors seem to like the prospect of letting them guess over what the lesson for the day would be. Unfortunately, she wasn't fond of those....not really. It didn't stop her, however, from raising her hand. "Ambulomancy, Professor? The divination by taking a walk?" WELL...she did say they were heading out. And no answers were stupid as well. Although Beezus couldn't help but snort at West's guess. Slytherins can be really conceited.

Oh, and....can they please go NOW? Away from the chocolate frog on her desk? Yes? Yes?

Then the professor asked a question, What type of divination would they be learning outside? Belle had no idea...but she could guess. Belle raised her hand, "Professor will be learning about the nature elements like the sun, earth, fire and water and they helps us determine our future such as Tarot Cards?"

AHH! There were a few kids who were right on the precipice of discovery!

Calista sat up a little bit at each of their answers until she was standing in front of her desk instead of sitting on it. "Come on, you're sooo close!" she said excitedly. But there was no more illumination on that line of thinking.

------------------

Since no one had guessed the form of Divination they would be learning today the blonde decided to tell them, she would have to anyways. Since she was standing already she decided to actually walk to the board and write the word on the board rather than use magic.

Ichnomancy - Divination by prints/footprints

Once she had written the definition, Calista stepped towards the trapdoor and lifted it open. "Alright, grab your things and follow me to the edge of the Lake." And they were off!! MUSH! The way that they were all panting on the way up here just proved that they needed the exercise, she had to walk up them all the time, she lived up here.

OOC: I would prefer you post your character leaving the room before posting at the thread I've opened here at the Lake. When you arrive there just kindly wait for me to post the next set of instructions.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Gosh, there were loads of ways to study Divination. Jory had never even heard of most of them. He made a mental note to read up on them. He looked at the board as Professor Elwood wrote. Footprints. "Sounds interesting,'' he thought.

The Puff broke into a smile. The Lake! One of his favourite places. He stuffed his things into his bag and followed the Professor.

Alyssa quickly jumped up from her seat and grabbed her bag. She had of course been ready the moment Professor Elwood had mentioned that they would be having their class outdoors.

She followed the Professor and the rest of the students out of the class.

Violet couldn't help but clap to herself when the Professor had accepted her answers. And because of that it made her feel rather relieved! Yay for class participation! She then watched as the Professor went to write what they'd actually be learning on the board. Violet said softly,"Ohh..Ichnomancy" She then took a moment to write that down on her parchment so that she could remember that for later. Then she wrote down that it was Divination by prints/footprints right below it.

Her head then whipped up when she heard the Professor tell them to gather their things, which she did immediately and began going along with everyone towards the edge of the Lake as she had instructed. Which meant..the stairs again..

Well, at least they were going down instead, which is what Violet would prefer do anyways! Nonetheless, to the Lake she went! Of course, making sure not to trip down the stairs in the process, for that, would cause to be a rather embarrassing fate..

So... it was Elwood. Okay. He could remember that.

Alec grinned at the woman, secretly wondering whether he should tell her his name. Because... they had never met properly before, yeah? So introductions were in order? ... Or... he could just say it afterwards if she struggled to call him anything? ... That sounded like a plan as well. He sat back in his seat and waited...

... Hair!ruffle.

Alec grinned back at the blonde haired girl in response, started to feel really very happy. Because... well... she had chosen to sit next to him. And that was awesome, yeah? GRIN. Even... if it did mean that he was bound to get extra confused during the lesson.

OH. QUESTION.

BLINK. STARE. ... That was hard. Sure, there had to be different types of Divination but... why did all of these names sound so... hard? Were they expected to remember ALL of them? Alec sat back in his seat and just blinked at each person as they gave an answer. Okay... he was going to have to put more effort in this subject, wasn't he?

Shaking his head, Alec looked back up at the Professor as she started writing something on the board. Ich... no... man... see. Ichnomancy! Nodnod. Except... he didn't know how they could Divinate from footprints but... well... as long as Elwood was going to explain.... Shrug. ... OH! OUTSIDE. LAKE. The fourth year grinned slightly and picked up his bag. He stuffed his belongings inside and started to follow the Professor and the others students. Ells was following, right?

Giiiiiiiiiggle.

"Westomancy is COOL." Theo said, slightly out of turn, before actually listening to what the professor actually had to say. Oh, so his answer wasn't exactly right. He hadn't really listened to the question, that's why...

Prints and hand prints, hmmmm...

Sounded okay. He was NOT happy about having to go back down the stairs. What was the point in coming all the way up here for a meaningless few minutes of a class introduction? Baaaaaaaah, oh well. Theodore pulled himself up and went to leave.

Ready for the mini field trip trip outside? OH YES! Bliss excitedly got all of her belongings together and followed Professor Elwood outside. The third year girl just LOVED nature and all of that good stuff, so this should be a really great lesson, yo. COUGH. Awkward. Grabbing the chocolate frog that she'd left on the corner of her desk and putting it in her pocket for later, she decided that she was ready to GO. But wait...they'd all left. Bliss ran like the wind to catch up with them. PSSSSHHH. Wasn't hard at all.

Bring it ON.

YES! The lake! After jotting down an few notes about Ichnomancy, Rowan quickly grabbed up her things and carefully placed them in her bag, including the chocolate frog. Slinging her bag over her shoulder, she followed the Professor out of the classroom, barely able to contain her excitement.

Clueless to any and all types of divination, Ellura had stayed quiet as the professor started the class by asking about they thought might be the topic of class. The mention of doing stuff outdoors had perked some interest but her thoughts were pulled away indirectly as more and more areas of the art of divination were mentioned.

Wow...she had no idea there were so many.

She had started to try and take notes but it had soon got a bit overwhelming and not all of them had been given descriptions. So the third gave up and simply listened and wondered herself on what it might be. Ellura didn't have to wait long before Professor Elwood wrote or rather magicked the name and description of the topic at hand.

Quote:

With that, the woman instructed them to get ready and move outside on the grounds with her. So Ellura quickly wrote down the mention as well as a few other notes before slipping her sachel over her shoulder and carefully picking up parchment and quill to head out.

Lake here we come.

Footprints? That's what they were going to be looking at? Hmmm...well she honestly never would have guessed that. She stared at the bottom of her shoe for a few moments, wondering if her prints would say something good or bad about her. Hmmmm....probably that she was a big old worrier.

Oh! They were going to the lake? BEAM! ...Even if she had walked up ALL those stairs and nearly died.

#Dramatic.

The blonde packed up her things and followed behind the adorable Hair Whipper the rest of her classmates.

Ah, well, she'd been pretty close anyway. There were lots of options after all- OOOOOOH. Outside. Taryn liked outside. That was where the hottie groundskeeper was. Heh. The blonde GLADLY gathered up her things and followed the Professor out of the classroom. Hopefully she'd be able to pay attention and not get too distracted.... hehe.

Dylan was being a good boy and listening carefully to everything the Professor had to say. So, they wouldn't be analyzing flowers...Not that it mattered too much, he'd obviously done well with it on the OWL...

...And he was eyeballing West. The Captain palmed his face listening to the younger boy's answer, trying extremely hard not to laugh outright. This was partially his fault. Egos ran deep in Slytherin...and among the team. Something he encouraged.

Hmph.

Glad he hadn't unpacked anything, Dylan slung his bag over his shoulder, getting up to follow the others down to the grounds.

Off to the lake with them...

A mini field trip to the lake? Well that would make for an interesting first class.

McCall finished jotting a few notes down on her parchment before packing up her belongings, including her chocolate frog, and following her classmates out of the room and down towards the lake.

curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog

"Ummmm..." Darn, Alex was going to say the cloud one! That was a cool one, he'd never known that sitting outside, staring at the sky, he'd been doing divination! How interesting.

"What about that one where you look at water? For symbols? We could be doing that in the lake," he said with a shrug. That seemed plausible, although the lake was prettyyyy deep and dark, it might not be the best for seeing symbols...

That was close. They were going tomtake up footprints, and not really walking. But she was close to it, so Kat was a bit happy for herself. Or smug cos she was one of the few to guess it. Hundred precent Slytherin. Kat weote the definition of the divination on her parchment.

SPOILER!!: parchment
Ichnomancy - prints or footprints

Kat fixed her things and placed everything in her slingbag. Yeah they could totally fit. Once packed, Kat was ready to leave. Anyway she liked the Lake. Everything was cool.
