Despite the chilly winds that would come through every now and then, the warmer temperatures of spring made it too good of a chance to pass up having the windows open. With the sun shining brightly in streams through the glass windows, giving the arena a soft glow about it, a simple cloak was well enough to keep one extra warm if they found the slightly chilled air troublesome. Nothing seems out of the ordinary as you enter the arena, almost boring in fact. The purple mats and short desks were lined up as usual on the floor, and Professor Romanos was seated upon the stands with a tiny (and maybe familiar to some) friend next to her boots, smiling and greeting the students as they walked in. The miniature animated spider sculpture may go up and tap against your foot as a hello, but would always swiftly return to the Professor afterward. Best take a seat quickly, for the lesson was going to start soon.
"Right." Medea nodded to the three students. "Thank you for the demonstration, Mr. McEtton. A bit trickier of a wand movement. You twist, or roll in other words, the wand between your fingertips while you flick the wand upwards. For those who did not see Mr. McEtton's example, watch closely." Raising her wand, she slowly demonstrated the wand movement, rolling the wand between her fingertips while flicking up with her wrist. Though it was one of those ones where practice really was necessary.
"I suggest you all practice the wand movement the most until you are comfortable with it. Nothing vastly dangerous will happen if you misspeak the incantation." Another perk of the spell. "When you're ready, you may begin. We will be starting the duels shortly, so use your time wisely. If you have any questions, or need any help, please don't hesitate to ask."
OOC: There will be another 24 hours, give or take, before we start the duels to give you all a heads up.
Belle saw the wand movement and thought it was kind of easy at first, but then it was better said than done. Belle saw it and tried to copy it. She missed catching it a few times. It was quite a struggle.
Then she heard the incantation, Loricatus. Hmm Belle copied it down in her notebook. "Loricatus....Loricatus...Loricatus...Loricatus..." Belle smiled and got the incantation down.
She practiced the wand movement. She had to twist, or roll in other words, the wand between your fingertips while you flick the wand upwards. Belle rolled her wand between her fingertips and then she flicked upwards. She had it down pact now. Well some of it anyways.

She walked over to Laura, who seemed to be looking for a partner as well. "Hey Laura, I could partner with you if you want. It's just...you're older than me, so you'll probably know way more spells, so. Maybe we could take it slow?" She hoped that would be all right. She might need to crack open her notes every now and then to jog her memory.
Laura smiled at Eliza, "It's been awhile." Laura had been a bit worried about how the girl knew her name at first but then she remember they had meet before which was awesome. "Yeah we can take it slow, I'm not very good with spells so it will be for the best, why don't you go first." Laura thought it would be awesome if she did.

Laura smiled at Eliza, "It's been awhile." Laura had been a bit worried about how the girl knew her name at first but then she remember they had meet before which was awesome. "Yeah we can take it slow, I'm not very good with spells so it will be for the best, why don't you go first." Laura thought it would be awesome if she did.
She smiled back at Laura in agreement, "Yeah, it has! How've you been?" Then remembering they were supposed to be dueling and not having a get-together, she skewed her mouth and said, "Er, oops, well maybe later. For now, I think we're supposed to bow and then back up five steps, right?" She took her moment to bow low in a dramatic and exaggerated show of respect and also how silly she thought it was that they still had to bow before a pretend duel. She stood back up and let her nose and eyes crinkle up into a goofy smile, reflecting her mood. Now for the stepping part. "That's great to hear. Thanks, I really appreciate it. I wouldn't want you to totally wipe me out before I get a chance!" she said as she took her steps backward.
Once she was at her place for the duel, she shook her arms out to loosen up. "You ready?" she asked, taking a deep breath - anticipating when the girl would give her the go-ahead. She wasn't super confident about her mental list of spells, but she was fairly confident about her casting ability. Maybe she'd just stick to the few she did know and worry about learning other spells later.
Annnnd, then they were off! But she panicked and still couldn't think of a good spell at all, so the first thing to come to her mind was, "Aguamenti!!!" And a HUGE jet of water came rushing out of her wand and flew through the air like a fire hose of water towards Laura. Someone could help her with the drying spell for that later, right?

"Expelliarmus!" she said, wand aimed at her opponent. Might as well start off with something easy. And it was the first spell that came to mind.

The second shield charm was really a doozy, and Mo lingered over it for a while. It wasn't that the incantation was particularly challenging, but more that the motion took enough thought that he got distracted from even remembering to say the spell. His wand seemed to slip a bit in his grip, and then Mo would overcompensate and squeeze his fist shut around it.
Finally, he got the roll between his fingers right, and Mo did a little victory dance, right there on the purple mat. Now he could add the incantation and see what all the fuss was about. "Loricatus," he spoke clearly and rolled the wand. Although incomplete, Mo could feel the weight of the shield spell on his arms and torso like an extra thick sweater he couldn't even see. Awesome.
But... it seemed that his distraction meant that Mo had missed the part where people paired off, and he had missed the chance to find himself a partner. "Anyone... still need a partner?" He smiled gamely and rolled his wand between his fingers for show.

People had already started on their own duels and she found it fascinating to watch. It was really interesting until she suddenly heard Penelope say an incantation. Hold on, what??

"Protego!" She uttered without really thinking about it. That was literally the first thing that popped into her head when she realized she had lost focus was now being aimed at. It made sense though. This one was the first she had learned of all the shield charms and she'd gotten a bit more practice with it than the others.
See? Even when she wasn't thinking straight she still was!

Belle smiled and got up and then she took five steps back. Belle had her wand ready. "Alright Damon you ready?" Belle challenged him. She was going to do a basic spell first. The basic defense spell of all. Belle held her wand out and said..."Expelliarmus" She hoped Damon was ready.

Alyssa dived to the side to avoid it but she was a little too slow and the spell hit her.....and her legs began to dance uncontrollably.
"Stop it!! Stop it!! Stop it!" Alyssa said to her feet, but they wouldn't stop dancing. Knowing that she had no choice, Alyssa pointed her wand at her legs and ended the spell,"Finite"
"You got me there, Jory." Alyssa waved over to her friend before she waved she rolled her wand with her fingertips and with a flick said,"Loricatus"
She immediately felt something fall over her. She looked down at herself but saw nothing. 'Okay let's hope this armor thing works because I'm really unprotected if it doesn't.' Alyssa thought to herself.
She went back on the offensive again immediately. Waving her wand in a squiggly line she said, "Flipendo" and watched as the beam of light flew from her wand and headed towards Jory.

Dylan entered the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom with an extra spring in his step...Things were starting to work themselves out again in his personal life...and when that happened, the Slytherin couldn't help to let the changes reflect in his demeanor and personal attitude.
There were somethings he could mask successfully...but happiness was not one of them.
Spying Professor Romanos chilling with that spider...thing beside her foot, Dylan offered a head nod. While he was extremely happy and in better spirits than he'd previously been, he still wasn't in a talkative mood. There were things he still wanted to reflect upon...and it was because of these things that the Captain probably wouldn't talk too much this lesson.

Dylan eyed the Puffer Potter girl and snorted. Seriously...Was the showing off necessary? It was like this with every lesson, of course. She always had to appear better than everyone else. SNORT. The Slytherin didn't allowed his thoughts or attention to stray to her for too long, though...Professor Romanos was beginning and that was clearly more important.
Of course...he WAS ready to move. As a Quidditch player, he'd never NOT be ready...because players like to move...Ahem. That was redundant...but YES. Dylan was ready...
...and he felt confident that they'd be doing something with shield charms...since that's what their homework had been based on. He desperately wanted to perfect that Glass to Sand shield...Merlin, the theory part of it...from what he'd read...had been fantastic and slightly confusing.

Even though she had come out and asked a question that required an answer, Dylan still wasn't talking. He'd done his homework...The Professor knew that he was familiar with a few of them.
Glass to Sand shield, though. So totally awesome...Dylan WOULD be breaking that one out if they were, in fact, dueling today. Also...was Gunter present right now? They could work out there little tiff in a formal setting...and Oak wouldn't have to worry about him cheating...or whatever it was that Oak thought Dylan was going to do. Snort.

Wait...Dylan had read about that particular shield spell...What had the wand motion been? He was drawing several blanks...Had it been just to point your wand? A jab?...NO...No, no, no. The Slytherin remembered.
A tight circular motion...with a flick? Right? Nod. Everyone seemed to know this already, though...So, Dylan didn't really feel the need to share. Instead, he withdrew his wand tried to practice what he thought that kind of motion would look like...Tight circular motion...Perhaps it'd be like drawing a small "O" in the air...but with tension.
Hmmmmmmmmmm.
Oh, and then that crucial flick of the wrist...So...A tiny "O" with a wing...

Or...they were practicing now? Going through the wand motions a few more times, he stood, shooting the Professor an inquisitive look. Hopefully he'd do this right...and not embarrass himself. That had been known to happen occasionally.

Clearing his throat and stuff, Dylan held his wand out in front of him, repeating for the millionth time in the past ten minutes the tight, circular wand motion, and then the flourish...or the WING, as he'd thought of it earlier. FOCUSING ALL THE SHIELD MOJO....
"Impiriano." It was said with a steady and even tone.
Had it worked? Was there supposed to be some shimmery light...or force-field action going on? Oh, wait. THERE IT WAS...It popped into place...lasted a few moments...and then vanished.
OH SNAP!...Outward appearance remained calm, cool, and collected, though...because he was a Slytherin...and that's just what they did.

"Loricatus is a temporary self armoring invisible shield, quite useful against exploding, severing or...puncturing spells. When I say self armoring, I do truly mean, you wear it like armor, close to your skin. You may not be able to see it, but you will be able to feel it. If you've done the spell correctly, you'll feel a weight against your skin. The weight is not so restricting where you can't move, but this will feel more as if you're wearing an extra layer of clothing."
She paused to let them process this for a second or so. "Practice can result in a lighter feeling shield, and so will the range of the spell. This is not an easy shield to cast over one's entire body, so you shouldn't feel frustrated if this doesn't happen right away. You should expect to achieve it over your hand or arm for now if you have not already practiced before." Had any of them? Medea would have been quite pleased to hear of any reading ahead in their school books.

The Captain continued to practice the Impiriano Shield, doing the tight circular motion and wing-thing...and true to the Professors words, with each uttered spell, the shield itself seemed to last longer...and the edges around it even appeared more visible...if that was at all possible.
...and then she was calling their attention...which meant NEW SHIELD, hopefully.
Dylan's guess had appeared right on as Professor Romanos introduced them to the Loricatus Shield...It was actually one he'd never heard of. Of course, if he'd never heard of it, how could he possibly know the wand motions...So, he waited in silence...as he had throughout the entire lesson. She'd tell them in a few moments...Although others seemed familiar.
Seriously...the Slytherin needed to get a hold of the textbooks they had...

Dylan gave the Professor his undivided attention as she turned her wand between her fingers and flicked it upwards. That was a new one, actually. He'd never seen a spell that required that kind of tedious motion...or actually, maybe he had. Ahem. Nevermind.
Forgetting about the first shield for a moment, he focused on this second armor-like shield. The way she'd described it...this one seemed more suited to his style of spellwork and personal taste. The armor thing...Almost like a ninja. An awesome, Snaky-SLYTHERIN ninja.
Amusing himself with his thoughts, Dylan cleared his mind and prepared to focus. Closing his eyes and picturing the invisible sheen of armor wrapping around his legs and torso, binding itself to him like a second skin...With that clear mental picture in mind, he was ready to try that wand-trick.
It had first seemed rather impossible. Everything Dylan had poised his wand to perform the action, the piece of wood had slipped free from his grip, falling to the floor in a clatter. In fact, he'd done this so many times that it was becoming embarrassing. Seriously...Was it because his fingers were sweating or something...Moving them down to wipe across his pants, he bent to snatch up his wand AGAIN.
Feeling a need to redeem himself for the constant slips, he fingered the wood a bit harder, leaving no looseness for the wood to slide out from. Rolling it's weight between hard fingertips, he flicked upwards, NOT losing the wand this time. BAM.
"Loricatus!" Like with the other, he waited to see some kind of indication that the spell had taken effect...but then remembered...it was supposed to be invisible and smirked to himself. He DID feel something hugging his body...but it was almost subliminal, since his clothing was also kinda tight...but something else was definitely there. It was most prominent when he took a step. He could literally feel it shifting against his skin.

Medea paused for a moment before continuing. "You may use either of the shield charms you've learned today as well as Protego. There will be no physical contact between opponents, spells only. You may not aid in another's duel, and with that in mind, do try to keep an eye on just where you are. You don't want to be in the crossfire of another duel. So, please, spread out as much you can. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask, or if you are having trouble finding a partner, come up to the front and I'll help you find one. Off you go."

They were dueling now...
Smirk. Was Oakey in the room? Seriously? Had Dylan missed him somehow? He'd been mostly focused on Professor Romanos and practicing the shields. The Slytherin hadn't given any of his time or attention to his classmates...who, as he looked around, were already partnering up.
Hmmmmm.
Yea. He was just going to stand there and practice his shields. If someone wanted to approach him, they'd take it from there...if not...Well, it was what it was.
Performing the first one...with the tight, circular motion and the wing in tow, he VISUALIZED the shield. VIZUALIZE and attack....FOCUS, focus, focus on the shield and stuff..."Impiriano."
The effect was instant this time! The was a flood of light and it shot out, forming a small wall between him and the others around him. Bam. The Captain had MASTERED it...kinda. Well, not mastered...but definitely did it with success...and it was STILL there. Lasting more than just a few moments. ..It did eventually fade, though.
Meh. He'd work on that later.

Taking some breaths in preparation for the anxiety that surrounded this particular maneuver...Dylan steadied himself. He even glared at his fingers some...just to warn them to cooperate with him. Rolling the wand with more precision than he had previously, he beamed. FINALLY. Ahem...and then he was doing his whole MENTAL FOCUS....Visualizing the armor hugging his body and all that...Visualizing the feel of the spell wrapping around him like spandex...molding to his skin...

That was more instantaneously, too. Almost at once, Dylan felt it fitting into place around the curvature of his muscles and limbs. Oh yea. HE WAS AWESOME. Mental affirmations and admiration...because the Slytherin needed those things. It was in the fabric of his being...

Having been keeping her ears open and eyes peeled for any unwanted spell work, it was only a matter of time before she glanced down to see just how close to the end of the lesson they were. Actually, it was right about now they should be packing up.
"Alright! Everyone! Stop your duels." She waited for them to do so before continuing, smile ever present on her face. "That is all the time we have for today. However, you do have access to the arena for any practice duels you wish to have, but, the rules on spells still apply. Refrain from using harmful spells." Medea eyed them for a moment. "Other than that, you are free to go. There will be no homework for today."

Alyssa was disappointed that lesson was over. She had thoroughly enjoyed dueling. Saying "Finite" she ended her shield spell. She bowed to Jory. "Thanks for parnering up with me, Jory." Alyssa said as she straightened up.
Then she walked over to her things, packed them into her backpack before walking up to Professor Romanos. "Thank you for the lesson Professor. I'll continue to keep practicing as often as I can until we come back next term." Alyssa smiled her thanks before leaving the room.

"Avis," she muttered, making two smooth bumps with her wrist. One to the left and then bumping to the right before what was REALLY offensive. Because the flock of small yellow birds was really quite harmless. "OPPUGNO!"
Pointing her wand at Kat, she smirked as the flock zoomed at her best friend... and if she was't fast enough, Elise was doomed.
And that was it? Honestly, Elise was disappointed. She'd have preffered to have a waaay longer duel than that. Seriously. All they got was one offensive EACH. That was just too sad.
Accio-ing her bag from its corner, Elise waited for her bestie before moving towards the door. "Thanks for the lesson, Professor." It was still polite.
Ella watched, wand raised as her opponent yelped and she frowned a little. He was okay, yeah? Shaking her head, she tried to regain her focus. They were dueling so she'd need to concentrate and not get so easily distracted, especially when facing someone who clearly knew what he was doing.
She'd heard him call it out, the tickling charm, and she quickly cast the shield charm in defence, "Protego!" Unfortunately she wasn't quick enough and she did take part of his spell to the stomach, causing her to giggle and squirm. If she'd taken the full hit she'd surely be on the ground by now, yeah? "Finite!"
Now that the giggling had subsided and the shield was dropped, the blonde quickly and with precision called out, "Tarantallegra!"
The conveniently timed end of the lesson coincided with the exact moment that Ella's offensive had caught Patrick off-guard. It was difficult to cast spells while uncontrollably dancing, but Patrick did his best.
"Finite!" He managed to focus enough to end his hilariously embarrassing dance, almost tripping over his own feet in the process, but he realized that the lesson was over just as he was about to attempt to disarm his opponent. He shook his leg to remove the numb feeling, and looked over at Ella when the professor had ended the lesson. "I suppose we'll call it a draw. Unless you'd like to continue the duel." He smiled, noting that the professor had said they had access to the Arena.
Oichi did the shielding charms as instructed and with a little practice she got the hang of them. However out of the blue the professor decided it was time to have the class duel each other and she needed a partner seeing as everyone was pairing up fast.

She smiled back at Laura in agreement, "Yeah, it has! How've you been?" Then remembering they were supposed to be dueling and not having a get-together, she skewed her mouth and said, "Er, oops, well maybe later. For now, I think we're supposed to bow and then back up five steps, right?" She took her moment to bow low in a dramatic and exaggerated show of respect and also how silly she thought it was that they still had to bow before a pretend duel. She stood back up and let her nose and eyes crinkle up into a goofy smile, reflecting her mood. Now for the stepping part. "That's great to hear. Thanks, I really appreciate it. I wouldn't want you to totally wipe me out before I get a chance!" she said as she took her steps backward.
Once she was at her place for the duel, she shook her arms out to loosen up. "You ready?" she asked, taking a deep breath - anticipating when the girl would give her the go-ahead. She wasn't super confident about her mental list of spells, but she was fairly confident about her casting ability. Maybe she'd just stick to the few she did know and worry about learning other spells later.
Annnnd, then they were off! But she panicked and still couldn't think of a good spell at all, so the first thing to come to her mind was, "Aguamenti!!!" And a HUGE jet of water came rushing out of her wand and flew through the air like a fire hose of water towards Laura. Someone could help her with the drying spell for that later, right?
Laura smiled as was about to answer when she heard Eliza speaking it was right though they weren't at a get together if they were then they would have some sweets and drinks that is what they did at a get together, well she would love having one of them later just not now.
Laura bowed and was about to say yes when suddenly Eliza had shot water at her and it wasn't as if the jet of water was small it was massive. "Protego!" Laura was sure that would hold it out right?

How wrong she was it worked at first but then it started to wear off. "Eliza, this yet of water is massive!" Laura exclaimed as it finally broke through her shield. "Can you stop it please, I'm getting wet through here and I don't really like it, the water is freezing." Laura pouted, and then the Professor was speaking, it wasn't fair she hadn't got ago.
Just as Oichi was just about to most likely get a partner and duel the lesson suddenly ended. She frowned as she packed up her stuff. "Perhaps we can duel another time. Well I gotta go. With this lesson over I gotta head to the library to study more for my owls. See ya later.". And with that Oichi grabbed her stuff and was out the door and onward to the library.
No homework? Sarah was delighted. She picked up her thngs and brgan to leave. She had learnt so much this lesson. Pehaps a viist to the arena was in order. She would need to practice of course. Shielding spells were a must for any dueler. Imagine a knight going to battle without its armour? That was like a dueler in a duel without knowing any shielding spells.
"Thanks for the lesson Professor. Have a great day" she said as she left the room

Oh man, Elise had blocked it. Kat beamed at her best friend which meant she just sent her a "you're lucky to have blocked that" message. Although Elise was Kat's best friend, you could never avoid laughing when someone just had crazed feet or stuck-together feet right? It was kind of entertaining to watch... so yeah. Now Kat had to block herself from spell.
Avis. Oppugno. Oh goodness, not birds.

Sighing, Kat smiled at Elise. "Nice birdies, by the way," she said, complimenting about the flock of birds that tried to kill the Slytherin. "And thanks for the really short but cool duel." Mhm, no lie.
Kat went to her old seat to grab her bag before she left the classroom. TOO SHORT, I tell you. "Great lesson, professor," Kat bid her goodbye to Professor Romanos before leaving. Although she wanted a longer duel between her and Elise for fun, I guess that one sufficed for her standards.

Damon smiled at the simple spell, "Imperiano." He said simply deflecting the spell, "Flipendo!" He dropped his arm back to his side as the professor called the end of class, "We might have to try to make it to the dueling room sometime, Ms. Lecium. Finish this little feud." He bowed again.

Amazed at the amount of water that was flowing from her wand, she stood mouth agape as it crashed into Laura's shield. When she realized her partner was uttering some sort of muffled plea for mercy on the other side of the shield, she regained control of herself. "Finite!!" she rang out, causing the water to go limp and dribble off onto the floor. "Sorry, Laura! I didn't realize it would be so much! I just sort of, reacted you know?" Then she heard the class was over already. Really? Laura didn't get a chance though!
She walked over to her partner to check on her. She really hadn't wanted to get her soaking wet, but that's what had happened. "Are you okay, Laura?" Maybe Laura could ask the professor or an older student to dry her off. Really though, if we learned the water spell, shouldn't we learn the hot air spell at the same time? Another thing to look up after class I guess. After she waited for Laura's response, seeing that she was mostly all right, she said, "Well your shield held for a little bit, so that's good, right? Maybe someone can dry you."
She looked over at her teacher and gave a little wave to the tiny spider that was still with her. "Thanks for the lesson, Professor. Byebye little spidey!"
Damon smiled at the simple spell, "Imperiano." He said simply deflecting the spell, "Flipendo!" He dropped his arm back to his side as the professor called the end of class, "We might have to try to make it to the dueling room sometime, Ms. Lecium. Finish this little feud." He bowed again.
Belle eyes widened and she was impressed when he deflected the spell. As Damon casted Flipendo and Belle was pushed backwards. Then she heard the professor end the lesson right before she was going to fight back.
When Damon mentioned going to the dueling room, Belle smiled. "I think we need to finish this little feud. I bet i will win though." she winked at him and chuckled.
Then Belle saw the professor, "Thanks for the lesson professor! I learned a lot this term!" Belle was quite sad this was her last lesson. It all seemed bittersweet. Then Belle turned to Damon, "I guess i will be seeing your around." she grinned and packed up her books and left him.

She was still a little shocked that she'd been able to dodge and send back a spell without having her wand decide it was on break. It was one of those things that were like...a major accomplishment on both her part and the part of her wand. Took them some time but they were finally starting to understand each other. Yuuuuuup.
Lex gripped her wand and got set for Penelope to fire at her again when she heard the Professor say that that was the end of class.
Already...?
But she was actually enjoying it. How many classes did one attend that they actually liked? Not many so why end the good ones? It just didn't make sense. With a heavy sigh she lowered her wand. "Great job Penelope." Then she went back to her class to collect her things. "And great lesson Professor!" She got another beam just because.
