Despite the chilly winds that would come through every now and then, the warmer temperatures of spring made it too good of a chance to pass up having the windows open. With the sun shining brightly in streams through the glass windows, giving the arena a soft glow about it, a simple cloak was well enough to keep one extra warm if they found the slightly chilled air troublesome. Nothing seems out of the ordinary as you enter the arena, almost boring in fact. The purple mats and short desks were lined up as usual on the floor, and Professor Romanos was seated upon the stands with a tiny (and maybe familiar to some) friend next to her boots, smiling and greeting the students as they walked in. The miniature animated spider sculpture may go up and tap against your foot as a hello, but would always swiftly return to the Professor afterward. Best take a seat quickly, for the lesson was going to start soon.

A quick glance at her watch and Medea wandered back towards the stands. The spider that was sitting upon her shoulder scurried down until the little 'taps' and 'clinks' of metal upon stone signaled it had reached the floor. She waited until most of the student's attention were up where she was before speaking. "If you feel comfortable with your shield charms, or just don't want to continue..." Mmhmm, she glanced around the room to a few people. "You may start partnering up for you duels. Someone from your own year or close to it please. Before you begin though, there's a few rules I want you to follow."
"When starting, remember to bow to your opponent before turning and taking five steps in the opposite direction. It's not hard. You won't kill your back doing so..." Just do it! "Also, I'll be giving you guys almost free range on what spells you can use or what you know, BUT, anything aimed to physically harm your opponent and you may find yourself in detention faster than you can blink. No jelly-brain or finger-removing jinxes, knee reversal hexes, conjunctivitis curses... I'm quite certain you all have the common sense to know which spells to avoid. IF you are feeling uncertain however, you may come up here, and I'll give you a list of spells only to use. Alright?"
Medea paused for a moment before continuing. "You may use either of the shield charms you've learned today as well as Protego. There will be no physical contact between opponents, spells only. You may not aid in another's duel, and with that in mind, do try to keep an eye on just where you are. You don't want to be in the crossfire of another duel. So, please, spread out as much you can. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask, or if you are having trouble finding a partner, come up to the front and I'll help you find one. Off you go."
OOC: Just for emphasis, do try to keep to your character's skill level; that goes for both spell knowledge and use, as well as dueling skills. Injuries may occur during duels, but please, nothing so serious where they have to be sent to St. Mungo's. A few bruises, maybe a cut, a rare broken bone perhaps, but do not go overboard. Remember, there could possibly be consequences due to particularly harmful spells being used. The lesson will end sometime in about 24-28 hours. Feel free to PM/VM me if there are any questions.

Alyssa stopped practicing when Professor Romanos began to speak. They were going to start dueling now. Alyssa was really excited when she heard that but she continued to listen to what the Professor had to say.
Bow and then turn around take 5 steps and then start. Keep an eye out for others. No dangerous spells.
Okay all she needed to do was find a partner. She looked around for her regular class partner this term. Jory.
Laura looked around the room, she was a bit scared that someone would want to be her partner just to see her injured since she had annoyed loads of people without meaning to, this was going to be a really scary lesson, she looked around and decided to let someone come to her and offer to be her partner, she was to scared to go and ask someone else.
Damon looked around the room, muttering under his breath, the only one he knew of these kids was Belle, and he sure wasn't keen on asking her but... He took a deep breath and walked over to his ex-girlfriend, "Belle... Don't suppose you'd want to partner up."Maybe her beating the crap out of me will make her feel better. He looked at her.

Dueling time! The part of the lesson Jory had been looking forward to the most. Trying to keep in his head what the Professor just said about the duel and the spells, he looked around.
Alyssa had been there a few minutes ago, right? Practicing right next to him? But she wasn't there now. Finally, he spotted her. She seemed to be looking for someone, too. He walked over and gave her a friendly poke. "Looking for me?'' the Puffer asked with a grin.

"Hey there you are. There you are partner. Let's get ready to duel."Alyssa grinned at him before walking over to a less populated area of the classroom.
She then bowed to him, waited for him to do the same, before she turned around and took 5 steps before turning back around. With wand at ready, she called out,"Ready?" before realizing what she had done.
In a real duel, no one would be calling out Ready. She didn't know whether it was the same with formal duels but she figured that she'd give Jory a chance...this one time...to get ready before she started casting spells at him.

Oh...dueling already? Penelope hadn't even properly practiced all these shield spells...but she wanted to practice dueling. She needed to do that. So...she supposed she would just have to make do without shields for now, maybe. Oh well. Maybe this would help in the long run somehow.
First though...she needed a partner. Who though? Probably not anyone that was too much older than her. She didn't want anyone to go easy on her, but she also didn't want to fail miserably because of her miserable spell knowledge. So probably someone around her age, fourth year and below would be good...
Alexa, maybe?
"Oi, Alexa! Wanna be my partner?" she asked, walking over to the second year.

Patrick looked around at the class, searching for someone to partner up with. He wasn't the picky type of person when it came to dueling, but he had always had a problem with walking up to people and pretty much asking them to fight him. Of course he was aware of the difference between a fight and a duel, but still, it was a difficult situation for someone so introverted as Patrick.

Jory returned Alyssa's bow. Then he followed that up with the five steps in the opposite direction.
He thought Alyssa was just going to shoot a spell at him but she didn't. "Ready,'' he called back. Raising his wand, he watched his friend intently. "I will not be caught off guard,'' he thought.

Alyssa grinned. Now to unleash the fury...or rather...the controlled fury of one Alyssa Potter.
Alyssa immediately put up the Impiriano Shield. Moving her wand in a tight circular motion with her wrist flicking at the end, Alyssa said, "Impiriano" and even as the blue bubble shield formed around her, followed quickly with, "Stupefy" as she pointed her wand at Jory.
...and she waited to see whether she had been fast enough to catch Jory by surprise.

As soon as Alyssa shouted out the incantation for the Stunning Spell, Jory rolled his wand between his fingertips and flicked it upwards! "Loricatus!'' Thankfully, he hadn't lost his wand because of the complicated wand movement. Anyway, he felt the spell at work because his arms and shoulder and the rest of his body. It was lighter than the times before when he had cast it but he could still feel it.
The red beam from Alyssa's stunning spell raced towards the Puffer and for a moment he thought he was going to be hit despite the shield. But his shield was strong enough and it held up against the impact. "Awesome!'' he thought.
Without wasting a moment, Jory sent a spell back to Alyssa. With his wand he made a rectangle like shape. "Colloshoo!''

Alyssa heard the incantation that Jory had cast and hoped that her shield held up. She definitely didn't want to end up with goo sticking to her shoes. She watched as the yellow beam of light bounced off her shield and she breathed a sigh of relief. She hoped that her shield continued to hold up against the spells that were being sent at her.
Alyssa immediately went on the offensive again and with two short flicks of her wand she said, "Immobulus" and a blue light shot out from her wand and headed towards Jory.

Professor there was gonna be a problem!!!!
She looked around the room and saw her chances growing slimmer and slimmer. These people in the room were all older than her and all knew their spells better than she did. How in Merlin's beard was she supposed to duel any of them??? It just didn't seem fair and it was times like this that really made her miss her Mama Vivi. Granted the girl probably would have been snatched by some older kid and most likely wouldn't have wanted to duel her anyway for want of an actual challenge but just having her there would have made her feel safer because she knew she wouldn't stand by and let her get hurt by an idiot.
Sigh.
This wasn't looking good for her. Every time she thought to ask someone she just saw them aiming spells one after the other at her and that didn't seem as fun as it sounded in case anyone was wondering.
She was about to go to the Professor and asked to be allowed to sit on her mat and watch but then she heard Penelope. Lex looked over at her for a moment. Weighing her options...when Penelope beat her...it wouldn't look all that bad...slowly she grinned. "Sure I'd love to! Let's go over there!" She said, pointing to a somewhat emptier part of the class before heading there herself. Penelope was good and she wasn't an idiot so the chances of something going wrong were severely lessened.

SPOILER!!: Quoteless catching-up. YAY!
Nodding at everyone and not repeating their answers, Elise decided that she would try the wand movement on the Impiriano shield first as she always did. Wand movement followed by incantation.
Seeing as the wand movement was just a circle and a flick of the wrist, Elies really didn't have problems with it. Ciiiircle, flick. Circle, flick. See? It was EASY. Now for the usually harder part. Incantations. "Im-pee-ri-a-no," she said slowly. "Impiriano? ImPIriano." Right, the emphasis small and in the 'pi' part, like Professor Romanos had done. Time to practice, right? RIGHT.
"Impiriano," she said quietly, watching as a pale blue-violet bubble emerged from her wand and surrounded her. That was nothing short of fascinating. A bit in awe, she lowered her wand and watched as the bubble seemed to wobble a little before bursting. Like those soap bubbles.
Before Elise had the chance to take any notes, however, the class had moved on to the next charm. The next SHIELD charm, to be more precise. Loricatus, the armouring charm. Elise knew the wand movement, since she'd been trying out all the strange ones, but it did help to practice.
Rolling her wand and flicking it upwards, Elise grinned. Practice did make perfect, anyway. Roll, flick. "Lo-ree-cat-us?" she mumbled. "Loricatus." That was it. Loricatus, with a roll between the fingers and a FLICK. And she did just that, feeling the weight settle on almost her whole body, save for her head. Well, she had time.
"Loricatus." HEY, LOOK! It worked this time! Feeling a significantly lighter weight settle on her WHOLE body, Elise sort of just shook it off. It was time for the duels!
As soon as Professor Romanos decided that they were ready, she beamed as she put her quill and ink into her bag, levitated it over to a corner of the room where it wouldn't obstruct her or anyone else and turned around to beam at her best friend.
"I'm ready when you are!"
And no, Kat. Chris wouldn't freak out too much if she got hurt. She wouldn't let him.
Laura was looking around, all her friends seemed to be taken so there was no point in asking them to be her partner so she looked around for someone else to be her partner but she was still a bit nervous to go and ask someone so she just stayed where she was.

The Impiriano didn't work. Kat grumbled a bit before plucking up the courage to try again. With a deep breath, Kat redid the spell. "Impiriano!" Kat said with the tight circular motion and that wrist flick. She watched as a bubble shielded her. GRIN. Good job, Kat, good job.

Raising her wand, she slowly demonstrated the wand movement, rolling the wand between her fingertips while flicking up with her wrist. Though it was one of those ones where practice really was necessary.
"I suggest you all practice the wand movement the most until you are comfortable with it. Nothing vastly dangerous will happen if you misspeak the incantation." Another perk of the spell. "When you're ready, you may begin. We will be starting the duels shortly, so use your time wisely. If you have any questions, or need any help, please don't hesitate to ask."
Now for the second spell. Loricatus, and the hand movement was a roll and a flick. Gaaaaaaah, they were much more complicating that Kat thought. It turns out the the tight circle-wrist flick wasn't the hardest one. Here comes Loricatus waddling from a corner to complicate things a bit more.
Kat practiced the hand movement a few times before attempting. "Loricatus!" Roll!flick. Kat watched... nothing happened. Deep sigh. Second try? "Loricatus!" Roll!flick. Still nothing. What? Was this thing a joke or something?!
HMPH.
She was gonna get this one right. "Loricatus!" And a proper roll!flick. Kat felt her weight being... odd. Was this the effect? Looking around to see who were successful, it was indeed correct. Merlin, Kat was proud of herself.

PARTNERS. And as always, it was Elise who came waddling to Kat. The Slytherin didn't even have to catch the Ravenclaw's attention just so they could partner up. It was like a permanent partnership-ish. Ready when she's ready. "Okay, watch out by the way." Yeah, that meant more like 'watch yourself or else Chris would be the death of me'. Anyway...
"Tarantallegra!" Kat sent the spell straight at Elise's way. Uhmmm... sorry Chris. In advance. If anything happened.

"Right." Medea nodded to the three students. "Thank you for the demonstration, Mr. McEtton. A bit trickier of a wand movement. "Impiriano" she said and made a tight circle then a flick of the wrist with her wand. A weak blue film of a shield twinged around part of her and flickered out. These wand movements aren't so easy, are they? She listened to Professor Romanos describe their next spell. Especially the next one. She practiced the tight circle and the small flick again before casting. I seem to keep flicking upwards, I hope that's okay... She decided to try it one more time before moving on. Impiriano!" Circle, flick, shield. Bada bing bada boom. But, is it working? She was on the inside of the shield so how could she be sure? We'll probably be using them later when we duel. Impiriano for physical attacks, and the other for magical.
Loricatus...lor-ih-kay-tuss."Loricatus," she said aloud before trying the movement. All right, now for this weird...rolling wand between fingers thing. I hope I don't drop it. She twisted and rolled her wand on her fingers like she was turning a tiny doorknob in them. Starting slowly, she twisted back and forth to get used to it, then added the flick. Just one flick up though, and simultaneously so... She twisted and let the flick happen as she did so. She ended up twisting while her wand moved upwards which made her whole hand curve up and to the left a little bit. Does it matter which direction you roll? Probably not or she would have said... But still, maybe I should ask.

Oh but it's time to start already. Shoot I hope I can think straight enough to remember some spells to use! She looked around the room, hoping to find someone who'd be semi-easy to practice with.

Oh, good, Alexa was okay with being her partner. Thank Merlin, because Penelope wasn't sure who else she would be able to duel so that they were somewhat evenly matched. Alice maybe. But that was about it probably.
"Great!" Drawing her wand, she followed Alexa over to the area she'd pointed out. Right so...now what? "Is now when we bow?" Or should they do something else to prepare for the duel? Like...what spells were they using aside from shield charms? Penelope's mind was suddenly coming up blank. Brilliant.

Ella needed a partner. She was a bit sad that Messy wasn't in class because this was their thing, the dueling. It shouldn't be too hard to find another one though, yeah? Surely someone would be up for casting spells at her...
Looking around, the blonde eyed the few who still didn't appear to have partners and bit her lip. She didn't know several of the people standing around but maybe that would make this easier? The not knowing thing? Oh and it also gave her the opportunity to meet someone new which was always nice. With this in mind the fifteen year old approached an older looking boy and gave him a small smile.
"Um hi, I'm Ella." Introductions first, yeah? "I was just wondering if you needed a partner." Because she did and yeah, she was asking.

Patrick looked a little surprised when he heard the voice of another student introducing herself. He looked around, assuming she must have been talking to someone else, but as he turned his head and saw an unfamiliar face eyeing him directly, he realized he the one being addressed.
"Oh! Hi, I'm Patrick." He said after a short pause, his brain needing a moment to process the fact that social interaction was now required of him. He smiled at his new acquaintance, having gotten over the shock of actually having to talk to people today. "Yeah, it just so happens, that I am missing a partner." He replied with a nod, happy he didn't have to go searching for people to spar with.

"It's nice to meet you, Patrick!" And he was missing a partner too? "Brilliant. We can be partners then?" She was just going to assume so since neither had one and others had already started dueling. "I um... well so I guess we just sort of need to bow and take five steps away from each other before getting started." And she smiled a little, the excitement building inside of her. This was going to be fun, dueling someone she didn't know. It meant she couldn't really read what he was going to do or how he was going to react in a duel and that made her curious and eager to begin.
Grabbing her wand a little more firmly, the blonde slowly began to bow and eyed the older boy to see if he would do the same. She was ready when he was.
Patrick released a sigh of relief. It was perhaps not logical to be relieved when you find someone to have a duel with, but in this case it was. He had honestly been worried he wouldn't find anyone and either have to not duel anyone at all, or have to duel the professor and get absolutely destroyed or something to that order. "Nice to meet you too." He smiled at Ella, nodding as she theorized on their next course of action. He wrapped his fingers tightly around the sturdy rosewood handle of his wand, and held it at the ready, bowing respectfully to his sparring partner, in a manner that suggest familiarity with the practice. Of course, just because he had dueling experience didn't mean it was any less tense at the beginning.
"Ready when you are." He said, turning his back to take the five mandatory steps in the opposite direction.

Of course, just because he had dueling experience didn't mean it was any less tense at the beginning.
"Ready when you are." He said, turning his back to take the five mandatory steps in the opposite direction.
So this Patrick guy, he seemed very professional about the whole bowing thing which made Ella wonder momentarily what she'd gotten herself into. Not that she minded a challenge or anything, it was actually more fun that way. Besides, maybe she could learn a thing or two from the older boy.
"Ready." She said, also turning and taking the five steps away from him. When she reached the fifth step, the blonde turned and without hesitation pointed her wand and called out, "Locomotor Wibbly!"
It was the first spell to come to her mind and she'd used it before so she hoped it made contact.
Patrick assumed his position after his fifth step, nodding at Ella's question. He was prepared when she cast her spell, quickly defending himself with a nonverbal Protego, flicking his wand upwards to block Ella's attack. He let out a yelp though, as the spell collided with his shield, and the force caused his wand to flip out of his hand. With a quick sidestep, he managed to catch it as it came down, but he was visibly shaken, and it would appear his foot had gone numb - a diminished effect of his opponents spell. It would appear he either overestimated his knowledge of nonverbal defensive charms, or underestimated his opponent.
Rather than dwelling on where he went wrong, he retaliated quickly, flicking his wand in Ella's direction and shouting "Rictusempra!". Say what you want about being old fashioned, but there's nothing wrong with going with one of the classics.

Ella watched, wand raised as her opponent yelped and she frowned a little. He was okay, yeah? Shaking her head, she tried to regain her focus. They were dueling so she'd need to concentrate and not get so easily distracted, especially when facing someone who clearly knew what he was doing.
She'd heard him call it out, the tickling charm, and she quickly cast the shield charm in defence, "Protego!" Unfortunately she wasn't quick enough and she did take part of his spell to the stomach, causing her to giggle and squirm. If she'd taken the full hit she'd surely be on the ground by now, yeah? "Finite!"
Now that the giggling had subsided and the shield was dropped, the blonde quickly and with precision called out, "Tarantallegra!"
