Despite the chilly winds that would come through every now and then, the warmer temperatures of spring made it too good of a chance to pass up having the windows open. With the sun shining brightly in streams through the glass windows, giving the arena a soft glow about it, a simple cloak was well enough to keep one extra warm if they found the slightly chilled air troublesome. Nothing seems out of the ordinary as you enter the arena, almost boring in fact. The purple mats and short desks were lined up as usual on the floor, and Professor Romanos was seated upon the stands with a tiny (and maybe familiar to some) friend next to her boots, smiling and greeting the students as they walked in. The miniature animated spider sculpture may go up and tap against your foot as a hello, but would always swiftly return to the Professor afterward. Best take a seat quickly, for the lesson was going to start soon.

Alyssa quickly raised her hand since she had mentioned that spell in her homework assignment.
"Professor, Revertoscutum is another one. It changes magically created things or animals that hits the shield back into its previous form. Like for example if a bottle is thrown, the shield will change it back into sand."...and of course a bottle wasn't magically created but she was just giving an example.

Lex had an answer to the Professor's question. She obviously did but before she could offer it others did. Gee. Thanks guys. Way to leave a chance for the 12 year old...
Oh...
Her answer didn't sound anything like either of those. Well then...Maybe she didn't have the answer afterall--but it was the thought that counted and in her mind she had the answer! Nodnodnod. And look! She was sure she had an answer for the second question because what? SHE DID HER HOMEWORK! Her hand rose quickly...but then that puffer took her answer. She lowered it--OH OH! Her hand flew up again...and this time Ella took it...SIGH.
WAAAAIT, there was that one Reverto--
...
Gee, thanks Alyssa.
Her hand went down again. She thought for a minute then eyed the class to make sure no one would interrupt before raising her hand AGAIN. "You also have Protego too. I guess it creates a shield...doesn't it...?" She didn't do her homework on that one, OKAY?

The fourth year had indeed done her homework, so she raised her hand. "There's the Loricatus one, professor." Sophie had no read that full chapter for nothing! Besides, King Arthlin was still very alive in her mind. "It creates a temporary armour... an invisible one, that is, around you. She only read and wrote about it, but had never tried the actual spell.

"Quite nice, yes." The professor smiled.

"You guess, Miss Cambridge?" Medea continued her walk around the students, gaze settled on her face as a smile crept up on her lips. She hoped the young girl this was just due to the girl still waking up. "Yes, you are correct. It does indeed create a shield."

"Correct, Miss Campbell."
"Thank you, everyone, for those answers." Stopping back up at the front of the class, Medea turned and sat on the third row of the bleachers, glancing to see who was already taking notes and who wasn't. "While there are a good handful more of these shield spells, we will be learning only two today, to go along with your duels; the Impiriano and Loricatus shields."
"Let's start with Impiriano. Miss Bishop was kind enough to give us a short description on it's effects, though if you did not hear, this shield creates a one way barrier. You are able to cast through the shield, yet it will block things from 'getting in', for lack of better words. When I say 'things', I mean physical things. Ropes, rocks, dirt, animals... if you can physically touch and grasp it with your hands, it can more than likely be blocked by this particular shield. It is not, however, one you'd want to bet on using against strong barrages of magical energy. It will weaken to nothing only after a few blows, unlike Protego and Contego."
She waited a moment for those taking notes to do so before continuing. "Does anyone know the wand movement for this shield?"

Oh WEST knew. He did. He'd even written an awesome story about it. Mhmm. He stuck his hand up. "Impiriano's wand movement is A tight circular motion with a slight flick of the wrist to finish, though the flick sorta seems a bit stylistic to me from what I've seen."
Was he taking notes? Nope. All in the head.

Oichi had only heard of various forms of protego for a shielding charm. She had never heard of any others but it seemed her classmates had. She made a mental note to look up shielding charms in her textbook later. She was glad when the professor narrowed down to 2 charms to start. Impiriano and loricatus. Oichi had never heard of either one of them. As the professor said some info and her fellow classmates answered the current question on what they do Oichi took out her quil and parchment. This was definately a notes lesson.

Ella nodded her head in agreement when West spoke up. Yup, a neat tight circular motion. She even doodled a picture of said movement in her parchment just for artistic reasons. She liked to doodle, y'know. Besides, taking notes was much more fun when doodling was involved.

Way to get behind, Greingoth. Sierra scribbled down a few notes then raised her hand. She'd written about this spell for homework, so the answer was fresh on her mind. "It's a tight, circular motion, with your wrists flicking just a bit," she said. Then she looked at West. He'd said the same thing, and first at that. She should really be on top of her game better than this.

Her guess was right? Pffft, then people said her ideas were usually far-fetched. They needed to be in this class right now to be proven wrong. Yeah she liked being right, was that a problem? No? She didn't think so.
Lex looked around and noticed everyone taking notes so she got out her parchment and started doing the same. There was some stuff that she missed out so she leaned over and got a good look at the next kid's parchment. It was a good thing there were actually people who could take good notes in this class or she'd be lost.
As for the question. "Yeah. What West said." No need to repeat the answer but she still wanted to say something so....

So they were going to learn how to use the Impiriano and Loricatus shield. Alyssa couldn't wait to cast those spells. Then the Professor had asked her next question.
What was the wand movement for the Impiriano Shield. Having mentioned that in her homework assignment she knew that it was a tight circular motion, with a wrist flicking action at the end.
She quickly raised her hand and was eager to give the answer when West beat her to it....and then Anna said she agreed with him...and then Lex said the same thing too.
...and so she decided to give her answer too..."I have to agree with West, Anna and Lex."

"Right..." Medea nodded to the students who spoke up. "It is a tight circular motion and while the flick of the wrist may seem stylistic to you Mister Odessa, it is quite a crucial point in the movement. At least when you first start out with this." Standing up once more, the professor stepped to the ground, turning to the side with her wand raised so all could see.
"Impiriano." Making the tight circular with her wrist flicking just the slightest, a light blueish bubble appeared around her. Lowering her wand, she turned to face the students. "You can see even after losing concentration on the shield, it will still hold, but not for long. The more damage taken against it, the sooner it will weaken and fall and you should be prepared when that happens."
The shield flickered and disappeared after a moment. "Stand up when you're ready to practice. I'd recommend practicing the wand movement and incantation separately to begin with so you get the hang of it. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. We'll be moving onto the next shield shortly, and then...duels."

So it was time to practice? GRIN. Ella didn't mind the notes and such but being able to try out the spells was the best part, yeah? The blonde stood when it was time and shook out her legs a little. The mats were comfy and all but her limbs tended to fall asleep and the pins and needles feeling wasn't one she enjoyed. Shake. Shake. Shake.
Incantation first, yeah? Quietly she said, "Impiriano..." That was right, wasn't it? At least it sounded right to Ella. A little louder this time and with more feeling she said,"Impiriano...Impiriano...Impiriano." Sounded good to her.

Oh, time to practice already? That was quick.
Penelope just managed to jot down a few notes about the Impiriano spell before the professor told them to start practicing. She'd just get notes on the rest of those spells they mentioned later then. Hopefully. Assuming they would talk about the others as well. She didn't really want to have to look them up in a book.
But anyway.
The third year set her quill and parchment down and grabbed her wand. Wand movement first. Tight circle and a flick of the wrist. Tight circle then flick of the wrist. Tight circle. Wrist flick. Penelope repeated it over and over, slowly at first but then gradually speeding up, saying it in her head while she performed it, never taking her eyes off her hand and her wand. She WOULD get this. She was determined to get this spell right within her first few tries.

That little spider of Professor Romanos was still such a delight to Eliza. She didn't really know why she liked it so much, seeing as it wasn't very cuddly, but it brought a smile to her face when she watched it scuttle around and up the professor's arm. Cute little spidey, she thought as it tinked and pinged its metal parts as it went along.
SPOILER!!: Eliza's DADA Shield Notes
Eliza Dawnsel
Defense Against the Dark Arts - Lesson 3
Shields
Contego- provides a shield around the object or person targeted though it can disappear after taking a few hits
Impiriano - creates a one way barrier. You can cast out, but objects can't come in. Magic can though, and it's weak against it. (tight circle, small flick - blue shield)
Revertoscutum - changes magically created things that hit the shield back into previous form. Ex. Glass bottles back into sand
Protego - shields the caster. Good for use against incoming magic.
Loricatus - creates a temporary invisible armor. You can feel its weight and restriction though.
Eliza copied down the examples of shields the best she could. The sunlight streaming into the room was awfully distracting though. I wish we could have class outside... she thought dreamily. But shields were definitely important things to learn, so she'd take them any way she could get them - indoors or out. I wonder how strong the Loricatus armor is. Could you use it for a real sword fight? I wonder if any knights ever cheated by using that spell...Well unless everyone said magic was allowed, then I guess it wouldn't be cheating, but I somehow doubt the average knight would've been used to seeing magic. Hmmm...
She practiced the incantation quietly to herself on her purple mat. "Imperiano...imperiano...im-peer-ee-ah-no. Imperiano."Sounds good to me, she thought. That one's not so hard to say. Loricatus might trip me up more though.

'Cool practice time.' Alyssa thought to herself as she got back on her feet and stood up. First she would practice the wand movements. A tight circulation with a flick of her wrist.
Taking out her wand, she moved her wand in a right circular motion with a flick at the end. She continued practicing it over and over again. Circular motion followed by flick...circle...flick.
Alyssa made sure that she practiced over and over again until her wand movement for the spell was fluid.

Belle payed close attention to the lesson. She missed doing the homework and was keen on listening and taking notes. So they were learning spells about shields....that was pretty cool.
Then Belle noticed Damon in the class. Her heart skipped a beat when she heard his voice. But she needed to get over him...sooner or later she will. She just won't talk to him for a while. She just was not ready.
All right back to the real world....practicing time. She heard the incantations for the spells..."Impiriano" that seemed easy enough. The wand movement was tight circular with a flick of the wrist. There will be a light blue bubble that appears if you have done it right.
Belle then decided to put into action. "Impriano??" No...that was not right. "Impiriano...Impiriano....Impiriano..." now that sounded better. Belle repeated it a few times. Then she practiced the wand movement. A tight circular motion was needed and she did it and a flick of the wrist.
Belle said..."Impiriano!" and did the circular motion with a flick of the wrist. Just then a pale blue bubble came up and was gone. AGH! she almost had it!
Damon sighed slightly bored already, his father had taught him that spell already, so very easily he muttered "Impiriano." And with the tight circular move of the wrist, the bubble appeared. That was simple enough.
There's some good in this world and it's worth fighting for| LOTR|Whovian|Sherlock Fan
So YAY! Now that she had familiarized herself with the wand movements to the Impiriano spell, it was time to get used to saying the incantation.
Holstering her wand, Alyssa practiced the incantation. "IMPERIO...no no.. " Alyssa quickly looked around hoping that no one had heard say the incantation to one of the Unforgiveables. It wasn't like she even knew how or had the intention to even do one.
"IMPIRI-ANO...IMPIRIANO"
'Whew that's better.' Alyssa thought to herself. 'Keep saying that, Alyssa.'
....and so she practiced. "IMPIRIANO....IMPIRIANO...IMPIRIANO" she said the words to incantation over and over again, making sure that she was saying the right words.
It was time to practice and Patrick always loved practice. It gave him a chance to impress the professors. Even if he rarely succeeded, he always did his best and this time was no exception. He stood, repeating the incantation quietly to himself, breaking it down into the syllables to help him remember. Pacing back and forth just a little on the mat, he practiced the wand movement as he repeated the incantation, assigning points of the motion to particular syllables of the incantation so he could sync them together and cast the spell quickly.
"Imperiano!" He exclaimed with the tight circular motion and the flick of the wrist, knowing that it helped to speak loudly when you first start out practicing a spell. A barely visible, bluish shock-wave rippled from the tip of his wand, and wrapped itself in a dome around him much like the bubble should have, only something wasn't quite right. Confused, Patrick scratched his head, wondering if the spell had even done anything at all. 'Maybe the bubble is there, it just isn't visible.' he thought to himself, and decided to test this hypothesis.
He remembered the professor had described the spell as a 'One-way barrier' for physical objects, and so he figured the best way to test it was to get a physical object to contact the bubble from the outside, if it was even there. From his pocket, Patrick produced a single Galleon. He flipped it into the air, keeping his eye on it. Maybe the bubble would deflect it on it's way back down. The coin passed through the space where the bubble should have been on it's way up without trouble, but as it came back down and passed through the bubble's supposed location, slow ripples appeared in the air, as if the coin had hit water, and the bluish bubble around Patrick became visible only for a short moment. The coin suddenly slowed down. It didn't stop, it didn't bounce off the bubble, it kept falling, but was now falling in slow motion. It turned and spun in the air slowly and gently, like what one would expect of a flipped coin on it's way down,
"I think I did it wrong." He said, confused, staring at the galleon as it slowly and gracefully sank past his face towards the floor.

Shield spells were pretty important, right? Mo supposed that even if they weren't going to be super active today, it was worth taking loads of notes and buckling down while he learned about a spell or three that might save his life.
Or at least keep him from losing his face, on account of he was rather attached to his face. Mo pulled out his wand and tried the wand movement as instructed. Circle and flick. Ci-i-i-i-ircle and FLICK. Circleandflick.
There. He was a master of the small circle and wand flick. He stuck his wand back in his pocket and mentally worked through the incantation. Impirano. No. Imp... Imp... "Impiriano," Mo spoke it slowly to ensure that all his syllables were stressed correctly. Know what? Mo Branxton was about to ace this spell. Boom.
Anyone want to volunteer to throw something at Alyssa's shield? Please VM me.

Did she have time to practice casting the spell? Alyssa looked around and noticed that both Belle and another Ravenclaw student had successfully cast it. So she decided that she would attempt at doing it.
Concentrating hard, she moved her wand in a tight circular motion followed by a flick at the end, and said,"Impiriano".
Alyssa watched as a blue bubble began to form around her. 'Cool. Now.' Alyssa thought to herself as she poked a finger into the shield in front of her and watched in amazement as her finger went through the shield like as if there wasn't anything in front of her.
'I guess all I need now is for someone to throw something at my shield and see whether it will bounce off.' Alyssa looked around to see who would volunteer to test out her shield for her.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Jory began his practice of the spell. He decided to start with the incantation. "Impiriano...Impiriano...Impiriano...Impiriano...' ' Well that part wasn't hard. After repeating the words a few more times he started on the wand movement.
"Circular motion followed by a flick, circular motion followed by a flick,'' the Puffer repeated as he made the movements. "Think I got it!'' Now to cast the spell. However, he was distracted by Alyssa as she was sitting right next to him. She had managed to cast it and there was now a blue bubble around her.
Jory couldn't resist. He grabbed one of his books. "Heads up, Lyssa!'' He threw it though not too hard just in case something was wrong with the bubble.

Welll sure but see? West watched her do it and her flick was tight and to the point, whereas he'd seen some pretty flourishing sorts of flicks. And this was one spell he had no problems with, having learned it already. So tight circle and flick and "Impiriano!" and BOOM he had a blueish-green shield around him.
Did everyone see that? Like a charm even.

Tight circular motion and a flick. Yup, Ells could totally handle that. She was quite the pro at this sort of thing. Circle and flick...Circle and flick... Circle anddddddd flick. Okay, she was ready to test this out for real now, yeah?
Yeah...
Holding her wand securely in her hand, the blonde closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She was just clearing her mind so nothing to worry about, people. She wasn't about to attempt the boat pose or anything dangerous like that. Once she was focused on what she wanted to happen, the blonde made the tight circular motion and the tiny flick of the wrist and, "Impiriano!"
Blink.
She was in a bubble! A blue bubble had formed and hey, this meant she'd done it correctly, yeah? BEAM! It only lasted a second or two but that was enough to motivate Ella to try it out again. She was totally going to become a pro at this spell.
