Default Astronomy Lesson 1 :: in the Planetarium

The first thing you notice as you enter the dimly lit planetarium is that the dome-shaped projection screen above you shows the night sky with the occasional comet slowly making its way from one side to the other. Try not to get too caught up in looking at the display, however, this is a lesson after all. Professor Flamsteed can be seen standing in front of the planetarium projector wearing a dark khaki colored suit and burgundy tie with a knowing smirk on his face as he waits for students to come filing in. To the right of him on the floor is a box of small pickling jars lined up in neat rows. So come on in, take a seat in one of the comfy chairs, and get yourself situated. The lesson will begin shortly.
Lesson Progression
First question :: what songs do you know that have a connection to Astronomy?
Second question :: shooting stars/falling stars are really called what?
Time to SUIT UP! Erm...put on protective gear and get ready for the activity LAST CHANCE TO PLAY CATCH UP
Activity instructions :: catch a 'falling star'
spell practice :: Fingere Elementi, Dextrini Potitus, Cumugasalis, Deminugasalis, & Crescere Hydrogenenii
OOC: Please be sure you are familiar with Professor Flamsteed's rules BEFORE you post in this lesson. We will know if you haven't read them! All SnitchSeeker site rules apply. This lesson has officially begun! Please use the class progression to keep up and IF you wish to do a bit of catch up please do so under a spoiler.

She would've liked to drift around and just hit random people just for the sake of it, but seeing the time on her wristwatch, the Ravenclaw then had second thoughts. Less than ten minutes left and she still didn't have a blue meteor.

That meant she had to get to work.

And so as soon as she hit what seemed like the wall, she shifted before bending her legs as she kicked off for a slight boost, surging her way through her classmates who were bumping with each other.

And then....BLUE METEOR!

There it was, flying towards her.

Good. Come here, you little piece of awesomeness.

As it neared, Beezus readied her gloved hand and once it was within reach, she extended her arm..... THUMP! Unfortunately, somebody collided right unto her, hitting her shoulder with force and sending her floating off away from her meteor right towards another someone she didn't bother knowing identifying.

Drat. Her meteor. And her shoulder.

Aha! A not so fast meteor!

Ness was ready to zoom towards it. She propelled towards the yellow moving meteor and went as fast as she could. It wasn't easy. This gear was NOT helping one bit. It was heavy and only making her go slower. She tried to use her arms a little more and eventually she began to near the meteor she had her eye on.

If only she could go faster. She frowned at the gear she was wearing. She refused to let it stop her though. Come on. Almost there she could get it. A little further. The red head used every bit of her arms that she could and went off forward some more. This time she was in reach of the meteor and with the stretch of an arm caught it in her baseball gloved hand.

BINGO! One point for her!

Back to flailing a bit until he was able to knock himself into a wall and propel himself towards the young Ravenclaw and Slytherin, Airey tried to put on his most stern of faces as he drifted by the two of them. "Miss Castell, Miss Sparks. The gear is built in a certain way for a reason," he scolded as he pointed to their EXPOSED faces. "Masks on so you don't damange those pretty faces of yours, please. And minus 5 points each to help you remember."[/quiote]

Melody stared at the professor in disbelief. MINUS FIVE POINTS! What?! She didn't even notice the girl. She would get whoever back at this. She stared the Ravenclaw girl who cost her house five points. She would get her back.

SPOILER!!: the professor 'help'
Although Miss Sparks seemed to already be getting a bruise from the one that had smacked into her cheek already. SEE?! He HAD warned them...

Hopefully they had been able to hear the tail end of what he had been saying...because he had sort of kept floating away - Newton's laws and all, couldn't be helped - and smacked into the other wall. He quickly ducked and contorted his body several times to avoid some of the blue and yellow meteors that were coming towards him, bouncing off the wall behind him instead of hitting him and ruining his suit.

When he noticed Miss Sparks struggling a little bit and kicked off the wall again, zooming towards her as a result. "You alright there, Miss Sparks?" he asked. "Do you need a bit of a push in the right direction?"

OOOOOOOOOOF!

Something - or someone - collided with the astronomer and sent him shooting across the room towards a wall that he had not yet become acquainted with.
OOC: keep up the amazing work you all! You are all doing fantastic and these posts are so much fun for me to read <3 You still have at LEAST 12 hours from this post to get all your posts in, but changes are it will be a bit longer if baby ends up having a fussy night again.

Melody did put on that dreadful mask on by now and was still floating around when the professor came by. Sigh. Looks like she would have to admit to needing help. Fun.

"um.. I do..."She responded. Too late. Someone had smacked into the professor and sent him flying away from her. Oh well... time to go back to floating and stuff. AND thinking what to do to that Ravenclaw.

OOF! A meteor laded right on her tummy. She gasped and held on tight to the meteor as she floated downward till she slowed down. She looked at the one that landed on her. Blue! Great luck. She was done now. She kept them close to her and looked around the place. Excellent. She was next to that Ravengirl. All the sudden it didn't matter how more experienced the perfect was. Revenge time. She drew out her wand (the only thing she refused to leave behind) that was sitting snugly in a hidden pocket. She kept it hidden up her sleeve except for the tip and pointed it at the girl.

"Furnunculus." She muttered under her breath. Now she waited to see what the prefect would do.

She was going down. She wasn't sure how but she wanted to head down, closer to the ground.
Suddenly Dylan was pinging off another wall, the meteor having pushed him forward. Merlin, this was so bloody uncomfortable...Not to mention FRUSTRATING. All he wanted to do was go UP and catch his yellow meteor. The blue one was still grasped tightly in his glove...

Then it occurred to him...How was he supposed to grab ANOTHER one when the first was still occupying the glove? How? It didn't make much sense...Unless the Slytherin maneuvered and juggled them around...Perhaps he could catch the last with his chest...Maybe he could cup his hands and...when he seen one coming, whirl around and grasp it WITH the blue one...

Obviously the lack of gravity was effecting his brain, too...

One good thing...He was sailing upward, again. Yep, he'd be taking advantage of that...

...but in his upward spiral, his body turned in such a way that he was now facing the person he'd unknowingly assaulted. Dylan grimaced.

Beezus.

"I didn't mean to..."......but he was moving too far away for her to hear, probably....Or maybe she did. The Captain couldn't be sure. Everything was confusing and weird. HE DID NOT LIKE THIS...or maybe he just needed astronaut-walking lessons. He'd be inquiring about that after class, ALSO, Professor Flamsteed.

Mission. Yellow Meteor.

You. Are. Mine...

One meteor down, one to go, which could only mean one thing. She was TOTALLY going to be in the clear with the injuries thing. The redhead had already reached her quota of injuries for the lesson and she was going to be just fine. Plus, there was no Kurumi there to trip her up anymore. The more that she actually thought about it, the more she realized that MOST of her injuries in school besides Quidditch were Kurumi related, which was WEIRD. Although, Daphne Hughes was starting to catch up with Kurumi's numbers. Selina was STILL sore from that try out.

Actually, Selina was sore in general because of that bloody meteor that hit her. You know, Professor Flamstead, you are a nice guy and all, but BRUISES ARE NOT NICE. No they were not and she was not going to get hit again because that was not cool. So getting her bum in gear and swimming through the zero gravity she tried to dodge all of the meteors zooming around the room. GOSH DARNIT! Why couldn't she have just brought her bat? If she had that then the meteor thing wouldn't have been an issue.

Not only were meteors flying back and forth, but also, people were too. WATCH WHERE YOU ARE GOING! Ugh, ickles just had no regard for the other people in the atmosphere and that was not cool. They needed to get themselves under control or something.

Just as she was scheming horrible things to do to some ickles for their rude swimming nonsense, she spotted another meteor the exact color she needed to complete this little task. With a huge grin on her face she started to make her way over to the blue meteor across the room that seemed to be acting like a ball in a pinball machine. It was only staying concentrated in one area and hitting off of the same two walls. SO EASY TARGET.

She started to kick her feet to give her the motion that she needed to get across the room, but she did not think how it would affect her motion. Her kick was a tad too hard and she started to flip through the space in the room as her body was propelled toward the meteors. OH MERLIN, WHY HER?!

Okay, so, enough with flying around being silly and enjoying herself, it was time to get one of those fake falling stars!

Preferably the yelloooooow oneeeee!

Lottie stretched her gloved hand out to get one that was coming her way, but someone else made her zoom away in another direction. She was beginning to think this would be easier without a bunch of students joining her up here.

Though, the whole spell was awesome.

Either way, she kicked one of the wall and zoomed towards a yellow one that wasn't too far away. While, in the meantime, the second year was avoiding hitting her small frame against someone else, or another wall.

OUCH.

Those things were falling fast, Flamsteed!

She was pushed down to the floor as soon as she caught the first one of the falling stars. And yeah, it was yellow.

Let's catch theeem blueee!

One down...one to go.

But even with it half done, and she having been successful in her latest attempt to grab her target, it didn't mean it was any easier. For one thing, it seemed like her fellow students were also having just as much trouble as she was, even just in moving in the zero gravity. And so Ellura had to be on high alert to avoid flailing limbs and floating possessions. One girl who might have been in her house had mentioned loosing her glasses.

Yikes!

And then there was the fact that as she looked around for her next target, most of the falling stars appeared to be yellow which she had already gotten a hold of. Ellura tried to figure out the best approach to where more blue meteors seemed to be residing finally moving in that direction. A move she made too hasty as she wound up loosing control and moving crazily towards one of the walls. It was just by sheer luck that she caught herself before she hit head on. She did hit her hip along it though causing her close her eyes in pain.

"Oh...not good."

OKAY.

FOCUS.

Dylan could DO this...He was determined to get the yellow glowing ball. DETERMINED...and when the Slytherin Captain got determined about something, not much could stand in his way...Especially not this gravity problem. He WOULD figure this out...

Considering the momentum he'd just got from crashing into Beezus, the Slytherin continued to soar upwards. As long as he didn't flail around too much, he would probably be alright. He could continue to stay upright, facing the charmed open-space ceiling...At least he hoped it was just a charm. Yes...No thinking about how it could possibly be REAL space...

Merlin, Dylan was getting an anxiety headache just thinking about that possibility. Vastness...was bewildering...to him. He gurgled.

Yes, because throwing up would making everything so much more interesting...

Swallowing that down with extreme difficulty, he focused on the task at hand. Yellow meteor...Yes, that one. He needed to catch it. That was all the Slytherin needed and then he'd be DONE. Eyes were glued to the space, darting from side to side...Yellow, yellow, yellow.........He needed to see yellow...

He'd take his broom over this any day...Stray thought.

...And then he SEEN it! YES! YELLOW GLOWING BALL, YOU BELONG TO MEEEEEEE!

Instead of messing up and flailing more to get closer to it, Dylan waited for it to come to him. It was in his trajectory....So, it was inevitable. He waited, positioning his gloved hands, one grasping the already-caught blue meteor...and the other free. Yes, he was aiming for the yellow one to just nestling right there...All cooperative-like.

...He'd guessed right. The yellow meteor HAD soared right into place...but the momentum off it was something the Slytherin had NOT expected. It seemed worse than the first...settling in his hands and knocking him back all at once...Dylan clung to his two meteors, both warm and beaming in his gloves...but he, himself, was now ricocheting off things with force.

"ARGH!!!!" His back was bashing into things...but he STILL was not letting go of those two glowing balls. NOT. HAPPENING....

Just when she thought the blue ones would be getting easier to catch...more yellows started to come her way. Lottie managed to stay away from those, but they made catching the blue ones almost impossible.

ALMOST.

She knew it was possible.

And while this zero gravity thing was incredibly fun, she still wanted to get a hold of the color that suited her most. Because, really, blue was nice. It had nothing against magenta silver, but it was still nice. Better than yellow. So she thought.

Still. The yellows had pushed her down, anyway, so she pushed herself upwards after kicking one of the desks, and beamed all the way UP. She truly was trying to FOCUS as much as she could, but this was just too much fun to actually be paying attention to most of the things and people that surrounded her.

Silly girl.

THANKS to someone, though, she managed to catch a blue 'falling star' without much inconvenience. Whoever she hit, thanks for that. We have the blue and the yellow in our power. Mwahaha.

Er. Yeah. Cool.

She was flipping through the air out of control as Selina tried to get to the other side of the to to intercept the blue meteor. Okay, seriously, this was SO not cool! All she wanted to do was grab that bloody meteor and get points for her participation and all she had accomplished was getting smacked in the bum by a meteor and she was now plummeting toward a field of fake meteors as she flipped through the air. Merlin, this was so not fun!

Her eyes bugged out of her head as she flew straight toward the meteors and each time she flipped her eyes would readjust with to the glow of all of the meteors. A blue one! That was all she wanted. That wasn't exactly true- she also wanted to keep flipping, it was making her dizzy.

As she flipped again, she put her hands out and started to spin them around like a pin wheel to try and stop herself from spinning. Merlin, slow down, SLOW DOWN! And by some miraculous miracle she did stop spinning. She was still kind of dizzy, but at least she wasn't flipping anymore. For a minute, she thought she was going to hurl or pass out or both.

Regaining her sense calmness or at least whatever calm she could muster she kept her eyes out for the blue meteor that was clinking around in that one area. It didn't take her too long until she spotted it. Slapping on a grin she started to swim closer to it until it was just arms length. She dodged all of the meteors that she could as she came close to the blue meteor. And then, once she thought she had an opening, she reached for the meteor.

Yeah, that was not smart. Because when she reached for the meteor it was moving so fast that it pushed her hand back with such force that it spun her around and she did not even catch the meteor. It just kept going by...

BUT as she tried to get a hold on herself, the meteor hit the wall and came back around to Selina....

SMACK!

...SERIOUSLY? KURUMI WASN'T EVEN HERE THIS TIME!

Was class over...could they be going now? That was how Ellura was beginning to feel right now. Certainly a decent amount of time had passed since they had all climbed up the many stairs and entered the very classroom they were in now. And they had been floating for a while now. And she could really use a moment to recover since as her eyes opened once more she felt every inch of her leg as the discomfort zoomed through her limb and incompassing nerves.

She was glad at least she hadn't lost her first meteor in the process of loosing control. Small favors...eh? Another small favor...Ellura had managed to be propelled in the right direction...TOWARDS blue orbs of light. One such orb bumped into the back of her glove before she could think of trying to grab for it almost as if taunting her. Moving herself and reaching again figuring to catch it before it got too far away again , she frowned as it proceeded to zoom past her and the edge of her glove.

So much for that one.

There's some good in this world and it's worth fighting for| LOTR|Whovian|Sherlock Fan

Alyssa floated towards the wall managing to avoid bumping into any of the other students. She did get grazed by a few meteors as they flew by her but the protective gear kept her from getting hurt badly.

Then she saw it coming!! Another cluster of meteors headed towards her.

'What? I thought being near to the wall was the safest place to be!!' Alyssa thought to herself. She slowly maneuvered herself until she was floating with her back against the side of the wall. She turned her head to look at the meteors coming near her from her right hand side. There were blue and yellow ones in the cluster.

Sucking in her breath she straightened out as much as possible as the meteors flew by her. Something hit the back of her gloved hand. It was a blue meteor. Alyssa lifted up her gloved hand and let the meteor float into her gloved hand. She smiled looking down at it before slowly releasing it back into the air. She already had her 2. This one was free to go on its way.

She watched as it floated up and then got hit by another meteor which sent it streaking past her and off to her left. She was clear of the meteors...for now.

Laura really needed to catch another flying saucer or whatever she was catching, she couldn't remember all she knew was it was cool to be in space, though a bit scary, she suddenly saw another object coming towards her, she could do this, same as last time, she steadied herself and then she caught it in her outstretched glove, seriously she was going to try-out as a goalkeeper for a football team when she was older, that would be safer than flying.

One blue meteor down, one yellowish goldish one to go. He tried to find any that were in the nearest vicinity, but the closest one to him was directly above his head. Alright, that one wouldn't be too hard to grab, he just had to paddle straight and kick upwards and BAM! The meteor would be his!

As he started to fly upwards, he realized that the meteor was flying away from him, and he tried to paddle faster through the air, when suddenly...

BAM!

The meteor collided right in to a blue one, causing a mini explosion and tiny pieces of blue and yellow rock to rain down upon him before disintegrating completely.

Well, it made sense. Real asteroids did that. Why not these? Sigh. Time to find another one...

Oichi was too late, she hit the wall but thankfully only lightly. She rubbed her head, "Oouuch, errrr". She felt a little dizzy for a moment but that subsided. She then shook her head and looked around. She found another yellow ball. She swam toward it. She stretched out her arm and caught it with ease. She smiled as she put the yellow ball in her bin. She was done and felt so happy. Now she could swim freely in the antigravity classroom, AWESOMENESS!!!

After a few minutes of searching--seriously had everyone gotten all the gold ones already?--Alex spotted one a few feet away. And within his reach! Just a few paddles through the air, and he could already feel the meteor in his glove. Is this what Seekers felt like during a game? Man, Alex could NOT deal with that pressure.

He paddled forward, using his long limbs to try and outrace the meteor and catch it before it crashed in to another one like the last one. He held out his glove, positioned himself in the path of the meteor, and felt a small thump as the meteor landed safely in his glove. YAY! SUCCESS!

He nodded at her words. This was hard.. a lot harder than it looked. "Yeah, I haven't been able to catch any.. I can hardly get coordinated enough to move around purposefully," he said with a chuckle. More like hapless air-swimming.. luckily he hadn't had bumped into anyone else yet. Oh and she got hurt? "Are you alright?" he asked, starting to put his hand on her arm and realizing he still had someone's glasses in his grasp. He looked down at the glasses in his hand the looked Minerva over. She seemed to be alright and he couldn't tell if she was favoring one shoulder over the other anyway.

The sixth year took a glance around in search of the owner as well as any close-by falling stars. Might be nice if he actually caught one as he was sure he was the only one in class by now who hadn't. Holding his glove out and trying to maneuver with the other hand, he started to head for some meteor paths when he felt something bump his leg. Turning, he saw it was Minerva again. "It's ok," he chuckled. "I'm having a hard time getting around myself." It was just luck that he hadn't done that himself yet. Glancing down at his hand, he looked back up at her. "Did you hear someone say they lost their glasses?" Ethan looked at the crowd of people and said a little louder, "ANYONE LOSE A PAIR OF GLASSES?"

He started to maneuver himself towards the others when he felt something hit his glove. He looked down and saw one the blue meteors inside and he closed the glove around it. "I got one!" he grinned back at Minerva. Total luck there.. but it counted, right?

Minerva frowned not wanting to have kicked him, "Well I'm glad your alright, but still I shouldn't have kicked you." No she was not happy about that, but with this no gravity she couldn't figure it out well. Then Ethan asked about glasses. No.. she hadn't, looking around she noticed a girl come over. Well at least the missing person for the glasses was found.

Looking back around Minerva decided to try one last time at this catching star thing. Reaching up she tried to fly/swim through the air towards it. She thought she was actually going to catch it, but was to slow and the star was past before she got to it.

Focus Ellura...focus.

It can't be that hard to catch another round orb, even in zero gravity. Ellura could see that a few of her classmates already appeared to have accomplished the task. Was it just her? Glancing around once more, the third year shook her head as others struggled as well.

Ellura took a deep breath vowing that she couldn't give up. She had made the quidditch team and that was a MAJOR accomplishment given the fact that she had never flown before this very term. If she could do that without severe injury surely she could manage this class...right? She didn't have much time to think though as she had spotted an elusive blue meteor.

Showtime!

The Gryffindor did her best to guide herself closer, her movements slow to avoid overshooting or making crazy spins and such. No need to get dizzy in the process. She finally took the chance and reached for the orb, feeling the pressure once more filling her borrowed glove and joining it sibling there.

YESS!! Take that falling star!

WHOOOOOOAAAA!!!

One minute she was asking to be thrown across the class and the next she was tumbling--spiraling really until she landed against a ...a wall...

Merlin! Who taught Mika how to aim?! She was meant to throw her at a star, not leave her helplessly careening through fake space! What if there were fake rockets that fake crashed into her?...Though that might have been epic...depending on the kind of rocket and how much it hurt...just saying...

When she finally stopped spinning she looked looked immediately to her hand that was clutching tightly to the star. PHEW! She didn't even want to think of what she would have done if the throw had made her drop it! After taking a moment to shake off the little dizziness that remained, she thrust herself off the wall and back into the busy planetarium space.

Almost immediately she was being pelted by stars. Eeeeekkk!!

She held her hand out--the free one of course and waited for another one to fall in there.

Star whisperer.

Her nose ached. HOW DID THE METEOR EVEN MANAGE TO BREAK HER NOSE WHEN SHE WAS WEARING A BLOODY MASK? Okay, you know what? Ugh, that was so not cool. Was she forever doomed to break her nose every time that she was in a classroom setting? Merlin, she thought that her bad luck with her nose was because of Kurumi. IT SEEMED that she was wrong. It was HER! Well, that made her sad.

Taking off her mask to attend to the damage she saw that a meteor stuck into the front of her mask... huh... well, she supposed that if the broken nose got her the other meteor it was worth it?

....Or maybe not... HER NOSE HURT!

Pulling out the meteor, she held both meteors in her gloved hand. SUCCESS!

Alright, this had certainly been enough floating and flailing for THIS astronomer so surely the students were growing a bit tired as well. Yes? He needed to check his sundial to be sure though. First though, he needed to wait to collide with the wall so he could orientate himself and perhaps finnaly cast that Gripping Cha---

*SMACK*

"Oh, hello wall. We finally meet," the Astronomy professor said with a little twinkle in his blue eyes. Alright, so now that he was on the wall... Airey quickly performed the Gripping Charm on his hands and feet and began to crawl his way down the wall and over the floor like a space monkey until he reached the projector. "Well done all of you," he grinned to those hanging on there. "You can let go now."

Turning his head slightly, and with his wand out again, Airey gave a knowing smirk. "Everyone! Prepare yourselves! I'm restoring gravity!" Which meant that everyone was going to come crashing down! Or so he was going to let them think. He wasn't cruel or insane like that - even if students were all wearing protective gear. With a flick of his wand, gravity returned to the room and the space-age floor returned to the planetarium's usual grey carpet lined with rows and rows of chairs. Waiting just a moment to let the weight, hehe get it?!, of the situation sink in, he gave another wave of his wand. "Aresto Momentum!"

There. Now no one was going to face plant into the floor or chair or anywhere.

Standing upright - and wheeling the wheelchair over to Mr. Clark - Airey turned his attention back to the class. "Well done all of you! If you will please take your two meteors and return to your seats there is just one more miiiiiiiiiinor detail we need to discuss before I dismiss you all." He gave the box beside him a quick kick to open it up. "Those of you who put your things in this box can please come and retrieve them and you can return your protective gear and gloves as well."

He paused a moment to allow students to do just that before continuing.

"By now you all have two meteors in your hand, so they look just like colored rocks. One yellow and one blue. With your wands please give them a small tap like so," he said while demonstrating on his own. Instanding the rocky cover vanished in a poof of yellow smoke (on the yellow meteor of course) and revealed a star shaped box labeled hydrogen. He did the same on the blue meteor, only this time a star shaped boxed labeled helium appeared. Grinning from ear to ear, he looked to the class. "You are going to need to keep and utilize these two boxes safe for your long term project. Do NOT open these boxes until I have instructed you to do so." Seriously. Don't. "Now, I know what some of you are probably thinking, how can gases be kept in boxes like this? Well, with some snazzy spell work these two gases have been turned into powder form."

Could any of them guess what this long term project was? Yes? No? If they had been paying attention to what he had said to Miss Potter earlier in the lesson perhaps they could put two and two together and make four.

"You will all be making and caring for your own stars this term," he BEAMED. "Today you have learned the difference between a meteoroid, meteor, and meteorite - along with some other things - and how a meteor is different from a star despite it being labeled as a shooting or falling star by those not in the know." Which they all were now, so they could say 'Oh! Look at that dazzling meteor!' instead of 'Oh! Look at that shooting star! "I will be opening up the astrophysics laboratory for you to accomplish this assignment, but before I do that there are several spells I would like you to practice before you leave. Just the incantations and wand movements for now. I will provide you with more details on these spells and what they do when I post your long term assignment on the Astronomy announcement board. You can practice the real thing in the laboratory." Because there was no way they could perform the spells now without the pickling jars that were beside him.

With another wave of his wand, Airey made several diagrams appear on the domed screen overhead. "The first spell you see is Fingere Elementi, and the wand movement is just a simple jab movement. This spell will convert your powdered hydrogen and helium into gases in your pickling jars, which I will give to you as you leave the planetarium. The helium & hydrogen will compress on their own inside the jar to make your star," he explained. "The second is Dextrini Potitus, is a spell which will control the temperature of the core of your star once it is in the jar. The wand movement is also a jab followed by an upward flick to increase the temperature and a downwards flick to decrease it." And another little demonstration for them all to look at. "The following two spells require two flicks of your wand and the incantations are Cumugasalis and Deminugasalis. Cumugasalis will increase the helium content of your star while Deminugasalis will decrease it. You may NOT simply add more of your powdered helium to the jar and expect it to work." Nope. Once it was in the jar there was no adding anything. Opening the jar would just ruin their project. "Finally, Crescere Hydrogenenii will increase the hydrogen content of your star. The wand movement is a tight circle drawn in the air followed by a jab. Circle movement on the Crescere and jab on Hydrogenenii."

Sorry kids, it was a lot to process at once but the sundial didn't lie - they were almost out of time.

"Practice these as much or as little as you wish here now and then come get yourself a pickling jar," he said with a nod towards the box. "Once you have your jar you are dismissed to enjoy the rest of your afternoon! Homework and more details on your long term assignment will be posted on the Sky News board later. Oh, and prefects, I will not be posting homework on your house boards, so make sure you do so, yes?"
OOC: once again, sorry for the delay and for SO much being in one post wasn't my intention to jam so much in, but the show must go on! There is no required post count for practice, so just do whatever your character feels like doing. Any questions can be directed IC to Airey or OOC to me via PM.

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR COMING AND PARTICIPATING! <3

Pretty Little Blue, stop running from me!

Lana was not having too much luck on her quest to catch meteors. She might have underestimated just how difficult it was going to be to catch them. One would think that she would be able to catch something that was flying toward her. She was a chaser, so the whole part about chasing after small flying objects; she was kind of used to.

Frowning a bit, she looked back to those around her. She was completely slacking and there were less and less meteors to catch. This was just getting more and more difficult as the moments passed.

Flailing in more of a focused swimming manner, she worked her way toward an area with more meteors. Maybe she would have more luck over there. She was was hoping at least.

Seriously, she was going to catch a blue one if it was the last thing she did.

As she went careening into the wall, she managed to turn a little and push herself off of it with her arms, sending herself drifting towards the meteors. Now what? How exactly was she supposed to catch another one of these in one glove?!

Without bruising her hands, of course. Because she needed those, on acount of she was a Beater. Did Flamsteed really expect her to use a bat if her hand was all purple? No. No, thank you. Alice was just resourceful enough to think up a way to catch it in the same one.

After flaling around the circle of meteors for a little while, the only thing the fourth year had accomplished was successfully breaking them up and sending one of the stars shooting off into someplace else. Obviously, she needed a new approach. Choosing one of the last two blues, she herded it into the wall, using her body to block it's means of escape. It hit her a couple of times-- and it HURT-- but it was nothing that gear couldn't handle, yeah? A few bruises weren't too bad.

The meteor had lost. HA. It was cornered now, and it was hers. Alice, hanging on to a protruding bit of the wall to keep herself from drifting away, carefully pressed her arm, the one laden with gear, against it. She managed to hold it there, even if she could tell it was bruising her a little. PSHHT. Bruises. She was tougher than that. Even more slowly than before, she slipped her gloved hand between the star and her arm. Now.. just to get it to fit with the yellow one..

YES! SUCCESS! Now.. had Cactus caught his, too?

She didn't know.. but SHE had.

And.. WHY WAS THERE A FOOT IN HER FACE? "Oakey Richard Gunter.. I swear.. if you don't get your foot out of my facemask in the next three seconds.." He would be returning to his common room missing a limb. Because he had almostvmade her drop her STAR. Not cool.
It was kinda lucky that Alice had gotten all combative with the blue meteors, knocking one of them in entirely the wrong direction. But it was the right direction for Mo, and he handily reached out and grabbed the blue stone as it meandered past.

What? Like it was hard?

The timing was good, too, because it saved him having to get belligerent with the boy who was harassing Her Royal Highness, and it meant that Mo had two colored stones in his hands as the professor brought them back to the floor with the restoration of gravity. Mo gave the bossy boy a very grave look before turning his attention to his two stones.

Just tap them on top and they turned into boxes, right? But boxes he wasn't allowed to open, which was... a LOT of pressure for this particularly curious little Ravenclaw. He tapped the boxes and then immediately shoved them both deep into his pockets, giving him an oddly bulgy look.

Now he could go and enjoy the day and try NOT to think about opening those boxes. Except... not really. Now he could go and take a beating from the grumpy Astronomy professor. Too bad the guy hadn't had a run in with the wall a bit harder. It was hard to get yelled at by someone when they were unconscious.

Ah so NOW they were done with the activity.

And Ellura had finished it just in time. The third year listened as Professor Flamsteed warned them to anticipate what came next...the return to normal gravity. No longer near a wall or anything else for that matter that she could grab hold of, she was left to simple wait and brace herself for whatever was beneath her. She gasped and closed her eyes as the spell was broken, the girl falling until another spell was given.

Aresto momentum....Arest momentum...Arest movement...stop or slow movement.

Certainly made sense seeing as it appeared as that was exactly what happened technically. her descent was slowed until she could properly move her legs and feet and finally touch the ground. Ellura couldn't help it as she winched slightly when she put weight on them, reminded of the hit she took to her hip earlier in the class.
Now back on the ground she almost thought they were just going to be dismissed, but the professor had other ideas, introducing them to more information that was apparently pivotal to their assignment for all of term. Ellura watched as the meteors were changed into star-shaped boxes with a tap of the man's wand and repeated the gesture as directed on her own catches. To her amazement it happened just as expected despite not familiar with the magic that was involved in the transformation.

"How coo--"

Wait...

They Would Be Making STARS!?

She couldn't dwell on that fact too long though since Professor Flamsteed went on to explain spells they would need. Heading back to the box, Ellura quickly dropped off her protective gears and retrieved her satchel. She definitely needed to take notes on the subject for future reference so she hurried back to the desk she had been using. The third year quickly writing down everything deemed important.

Alyssa was more than happy to be back on the ground. Walking back to her backpack, she took out her wand and said, "Finite" ending the spell that kept her backpack glued to the ground. Then she dug inside for her writing materials and journal. She listened and blinked and listened...and blinked as the Professor rambled on gave his instructions on what he wanted them to do next. She was totally confused but decided to give it a try. Pointing her wand at the yellow meteor, she tapped it and it turned into a yellow star shaped box labelled Hydrogen. She then tapped her blue meteor and it transformed into a blue star shaped box labelled Helium.

'Okay what next.' Alyssa thought to herself trying to follow along with the Professor. 'Okay this isn't going to work.' Alyssa shook her head after losing track of what the Professor was trying to say. Picking up her quill, she first copied down the spells that the Professor had written down on the board.

Text Cut: Alyssa's Astronomy Journal

Spells to be used for term homework
1. Spell to cause phase shift (solid, liquid, gas)
incantation: Fingere Elementi
wand movement: jab

2. Spell to control temperature
incantation: Dextrini Potitus
wand movement: jab with a flick upwards to increase and flick downward to decrease

3. Spell to increase helium
incantation: Cumugasalis
wand movement: two flicks

4. Spell to decrease helium
incantation: Deminugasalis
wand movement: two flicks

5. Spell to increase hydrogen
incantation: Crescere Hydrogenenii
wand movement: tight circle drawn in the air followed by a jab. Circle movement on the Crescere and jab on Hydrogenenii

'Okay now I have that written down, it's time to practice these spells. Honestly, they are tongue twisters.' Alyssa thought to herself as she placed aside her two star shaped boxes and practiced first pronouncing the spells.

"Fingere Elementi....Fingere Elementi....Fingere Elementi"

"Dextrini Potitus...Dextrini Potitus...Dextrini Potitus"

Alyssa took a breath...before trying out the remaining spells.

"Cumugasalis...Cumugasalis....Cumugasalis"

"Deminugasalis....Deminugasalis....Deminugasalis"

'Now THAT was a tongue twister!!' Alyssa thought to herself before attempting the last spell.

" Crescere Hydrogenenii... Crescere Hydrogenenii... Crescere Hydrogenenii"

Once she was done....she started back to the beginning again. Practicing the incantations for each spell until she was sure that she had them right.
