Hecate was sitting in the classroom, just thinking it seems. She was thinking of many things and many people... She was thinking of her husbands, and of her career... things settled down... She sighed. She looked at the seats and table... She saw kids grow up in those seats.

Maybe she didn't create another famous potion... but she helped mold the witches and wizards of tomorrow...

She cast on the door, and it unlocked. Time for the last class of the term.

  • Add the set of fairy wings
  • Heat until the potion turns turquoise.

  • Heat until the potion turns pink.
  • Add 20 of the toasted dragonfly thoraxes or until the potion turns red (sometimes it takes only 18 or 19, but never more than 20)
  • Heat until the potion turns blue.
  • Add 20 of the toasted dragonfly thoraxes until the potion turns silver (sometimes it takes only 18 or 19, but never more than 20)
  • Heat the potion until it turns red again.

Heating...heating...heating...Merlin, this potion didn't want to turn blue too quickly, did it? Maybe it liked being red. Could potions have favorite colors? Maybe red was this one's. Maybe-

Oh, look, blue! Finally. Penelope grinned and checked off that step. Now what...

...more of the toasted dragonfly thoraxes. Same as before. Except it was supposed to turn silver this time? Interesting. Why not red again like before? Though, glancing at the next step, it looked like it would turn red eventually. But only after heating, not simply putting these dragonfly things in there like before. Weird.

But she grabbed them, a few in her hands at a time, and dropped them in one at a time as before.

One, two, three...four, five, six, seven....eight, nine, ten...

Edita made a face and caught herself. Her mother would tell her off, for sure, and threaten that one day her face was going to stick like that. Happenstance tried to be more conscientious about her facial expressions but some moments really called for face pulling--like Ezra being grouchy over something that wasn't her fault.

That was new. Just like Carver's sudden whooping cough.

"I'm sorry, I didn't catch you over your apparent pneumonia!" Edita chuckled, hunching over to control her fire with a stab of her wand. She wasn't sure what pneumonia was but it had to do with coughing and lungs and sometimes people died of that. Her father had told her so once.

"Look it up in a book, Novemberrrr," drawled Edita, opening her eyes wide to keep herself from rolling them. She was exhibiting particularly Ravenclaw traits at the moment and Ed was finding it hard to deal with it. She already had a hard time concentrating on her potion brewing. Distractions were unwelcome especially in the form of 100 questions from November Franze.

"Well, I think..." she trailed off, catching the rest of November's babbling. Her hazel eyes found Carver, who was hard at work before they drifted back to November and finally, her own cauldron. "He sure doesn't look like a Knight." What was November up to now? Did she have a boyfriend named Richard? Richie, right? Did she like Ezra now too?

Eddie made a face. But Ezra was so short.

And her potion was so pink!

"Oooh!" she exclaimed, drawing closer to the mouth of her cauldron. "Not bad. What's the next step?" Eddie went back to her notes, and took what she thought were discreet looks at November and Ezra's notes to compare. It wouldn't do if her instructions were different. "The next step is a bit..."

She reached for the jar of toasted dragonfly thoraxes, holding it gingerly in her hand as she opened it. "We're supposed to keep adding these until the potion turns red." Edita let the jar lid rest on their shared desk and began dropping dragonfly body things one by one.

Turning to her cauldron, Peyton brandished out her wand and pointed it at the mouth of the cauldron. "Scourgify!" she said, bouncing on her toes to get a look inside. It was clean. Perfect. Next, she cast Aguamenti and a small jet of water flowed from her wand and into the cauldron. She estimated the right about of water, not too much and not too little.

When it came time to add the set of fairy wings, for a minute, Peyton imagined herself as on of the pretty fairies from the muggle world. The ones that dripped sparkles when they flew. That was cool. She quickly snapped out of her thoughts. Right. She needed to get working. Peyton dropped the fairy wings into the cauldron and watched them swirl in the liquid. Then she cast Incendio underneath the cauldron, lighting a small fire, and waited for her potion to turn turquoise.

How long would that take?

Kat was on the right track baby I was born this way with her potion. The next thing had to do was add doxy eggs, three of them. Though there were like 12 of them, they had to add them by threes. Even more time to consume. Merlin's beard. No choice though. Taking them, she add the eggs one by one. 1... 2... 3...

Okay that was set. "Incendio!" she cast again on the cauldron to heat it and waited to see if it turned into the hue of pink. Heh, a potion that's pink? Must be weird. It didn't take too long for her potion to acquire a pink tone. Kat stopped the flame to survey her potion. All good. Next.

It would be much better if the potion was blue. It was supposed to be blue, and blue was a much more calming color than red anyway. And prettier in a cauldron. A cauldron of blue was like a big pot of happy, while a cauldron of red was... bloody, mostly. No thanks.

As if on cue, the cauldron turned a very pleasing blue. And again with the extra crispy thoraxes. Mo tossed the first few thoraxes into the cauldron as he mentally recounted how this had gone last round. It hadn't taken the entire 20 thoraxes, but he hadn't needed to add them so slowly. Maybe he could just add the first fifteen outright and see what happened?

All in one go, Mo popped the rest of the fifteen into the cauldron, pausing only to be sure that the potion hadn't changed color again. Maybe it was lightening a bit, but that was definitely not silver.

Sixteen... still blue.

Seventeen... blue blue blue.

Eighteen... BLUE.

Nineteen... ah, there it was. Silver.

Oh, tragedy. He needed the potion red again.

Peyton's eyebrows rose when the solution began to turn turquoise. She grinned at the cauldron. This was her first time making a potion where the professor didn't guide them the entire way until it was finished. It both made her a tiny bit nervous and excited. She was all for independence nowadays.

Crossing off the first two instruction points, Peyton glance at the next one. It was time to add one measure of doxy egg. She picked up the first egg and gently added it, then a second and then a third. So far, so good. This was a piece of cake, really. For now at least. The third year waited for the potion to turn pink, her eyes not leaving the cauldron. She wanted to see when the color transformation happened.

After a little while, the liquid began to rosy up a bit until it was right one pink. Peyton beamed. Could her potion stay pink forever? Pink was a pretty color. ^__^

Dylan thought he had a general understanding of what she was talking about...It wasn't just for endurance...but for things like endurance of the mind, body, health, and...Well, whatever else you wanted, he guessed.

Quickly breaking out his Potions notebook, he started jotting down the ingredients and steps, making sure to make adjustments in the procedure as he did so. Dylan would be scourgifying his cauldron beforehand...and also would be scourgifying his utensils...Force of habit and cleanliness. Dust did collect in things and there was no telling was crazy effect that would have on the concoction.

Potion Lesson Three: The Girdling Potion

Ingredients
  • Water to fill the cauldron
  • 50 Dragonfly thoraxes (40 toasted/10 unheated)
  • One set of Fairy wings (2)

  • 12 Doxy eggs (Divided in 4 measures of 3)
  • Lobalug venom (personal ingredient)
    Notes: The venom of the Lobalug is a defensive mechanism employed by the creature to deter attackers. Wizards use the venom as a potion ingredient, although the practise is strictly controlled.

Steps / Procedure
  • Cleaned cauldon. (Scourgify!)
  • Filled to the neck with water. (Aguamenti!)
  • Add the set of fairy wings
  • Heat until the potion turns turquoise.
  • Add one measure of doxy eggs. (That's 3)
  • Heat until the potion turns pink.
  • Add 20 of the toasted dragonfly thoraxes or until the potion turns red (sometimes it takes only 18 or 19, but never more than 20)
  • Heat until the potion turns blue.
  • Add 20 of the toasted dragonfly thoraxes until the potion turns silver (sometimes it takes only 18 or 19, but never more than 20)

After that was all taken care of and noted, the Captain went to collect ingredients. This took several trips due to all the dragon thoraxes...and the doxy eggs. Merlin, the amounts. Was this necessary?

FIFTY thoraxes?!

Once everything had been successfully carted to his workstation, Dylan went about setting up his cauldron, scourgifying the inside of it with an unspoken 'Scourgify!'. The Slytherin literally performed the spell so many times that it was that easy. 'Aguamenti!' was next (and also silent) as he allowed the cauldron to fill with water up to the neck.

"Finite." Yea, he was still working on that one...as a nonverbal...

Hearing his name, Dylan looked up to the front, settling his eyes on Professor Lafay. He wasn't going to comment, of course...because anything he said might have been deemed inappropriate. Maybe? People seemed to be easily offended these days...

Truth of the matter, though....there was nothing wrong with his endurance or stamina. Nope. Nothing at all.

Scratch out what Kat said earlier. The potion wasn't that complicating. Not yet at least. Sooner or later she'd be having a heart attack with all of the complexity of the potion. Deep breaths. As for now, she could still handle with all of it. Won't be that long until she would be able to do everything with ease.

Dragonfly thoraxes were next. Okay good. Kat took the first of half of thoraxes, 20, of them in her hand and added the thoraxes one by one, keeping an eye at her potion in case she placed too much of the thoraxes inside. Cause Lafay did state on the board that it might only need 18 or 19 of them. So yeah, she was doing that.

"Incendio!" the fifth year heated her cauldron until the potion turned blue. Colour shift for red to blue. She waited and then... BINGO! It was blue. Rock n' roll.

Wowza!

Ezra gave up, which he realized was a little lazy of him, but he gave up. He gave up trying to help Edita because, apparently, she couldn't realize when he was trying to be discreet. No one had every said anything against helping classmates, but he was pretty sure he wasn't supposed to be the one telling others what to do. Edita's potion would explode and lit them all on fire, or it wouldn't. It was all up to her, now.

That was a very disquieting thought.

He shook his head, shutting his eyes, and attempted to tune out both girls. November was talking about knights and Edita said he didn't look like one. Ezra quite agreed. He didn't say anything, though, because it'd probably make November launch into a long speech about how exactly the title of 'knight' befitted him. Ezra supposed she meant it as a compliment, but it sounded like the sort of responsibility he'd never agreed to sign up for. Really, holding such high standards for him to meet without even asking him was quite rude.

Since his potion was already a pale shade of pink and likely as pink as it'd ever get, Ezra went back to ignoring his friends, and looked over the instructions, again. Using body parts of a dragonfly - or of any living thing, really - sound a little barbaric to the boy, but not enough to take away from his enjoyment. He didn't care for bugs, anyway and a few hundreds of dead dragonflies used for a Girding Potions would hurt no one. He poked at the flame, and carefully began to add the thoraxes, one by one, standing on his tip toes to check on his brew.

When he reached the number eighteen, Ezra stopped, and allowed the potion to simmer, for a moment. He expected it to turn a bright shade of red in any second. He waited. And waited.

He lost his patience, and clicked his tongue. Hastily, he added the last two.

There. "There." It sounded more like finally. And now to wait for it to turn blue.

Ezra poked at the flames, again.

Anya took a look at her clean cauldron that was currently filled with water. Perfect.

She looked at her notes to find the next step. Adding the fairy wings. She carefully placed them into the cauldron. While doing so, she tried not to think about how sad that was. Hopefully the fairies had already been dead before their wings were removed.

Right. Now. What was next? Okay. Heating the potion. "Incendio." she muttered point her wand under her cauldron. And once the fire started she carefully watched her cauldron. And watched. And waited.

And then it turned turquoise. She grinned happily. She turned off the fire with a "Finite."

And now that the fire was off, she turned her attention back to her parchment to read the next instructions.

Three flying seahorses? Aww. Ella had seen these in the black lake before and felt a little bad as she handled them. Poor little guys. The blonde carefully added each to her potion, counting as she did. "One...two...three." They wouldn't be flying any more but they would live on, yeah? In that they were helping to make a really cool potion that made people stronger and faster and just all around better. That was kind of a nice thing to think about. Bright side?

Now the potion needed to turn green. GREEN! Heh. Green was Ella's favorite color and she smiled as she eyed the potion curiously. Go green or go home, potion. Seriously.

GREEN! BEAM! She'd done it, well for the most part! "Now I just need to add the last ingredient." She said quietly to herself, eyeing the one she'd picked for her potion. One more thing and hopefully it wouldn't ruin the potion completely.

Reading the next step carefully, Peyton rubbed the back of her neck. So she was supposed to add twenty dragonfly thoraxes or less, what if her potion needed more? Was there such thing? Could it happen? Would her potion explode if she added more than the required amount? Meeeeh. She was starting to sound like one of her sisters. Always over analyzing.

With a shrug, Peyton added two toasted dragonfly thoraxes. Her potion didn't change color, so she kept on adding.

Three...

Six....

Ten....

Fourteen....

She peeked into the cauldron. Nothing. No red.

Sixteen...

Twenty..?

Peyton peeked in again, biting the inside of her cheek. It had to be red. It just HAD to. To her relief, the solution was gleaming up red. She let out a breath. How her mother enjoyed potions and stuff related to it, she would never understand. After that was done, she waited for the potion to heat up and turn blue. She liked potions. She didn't like waiting.

It didn't take long for her potion to turn blue, though, and that made this Baltazar a happy camper.

Alright. Now that those fairy wings were done, Anya read down the instructions further. Add one measure of Doxy Eggs. That sounded easy enough. She counted out three doxy eggs. She then scanned the directions again to see if there was anything special that needed to be done with the eggs. Nope.

She dropped the measure of eggs into the cauldron. She then re-lit the fire under the cauldron. She waited patiently until the potion turned pink. After which, she cut off the heat.

She marked off those two steps on her instruction list and began reading what to do next.

Once her ingredients were spread out in front of her, Alice cleaned the cauldron with a hasty "Scourgify". And then bubbles appeared, which meant the spell was working, yeah? Now that her cauldron was clean, she angled her wand into the cauldron and began to fill it with water, as instructed. "Aguamenti." That was enough, wasn't it? It seemed to be, so she broke her concentration and tipped her wand away from it.

They were nice, and it was a shame to have to get them all wet, but that was what the instructions had wanted. She sprinkled the wings inside the cauldron and then lit the flame beneath it. When was it going to turn turquoise? Now? Now? Now?

Peyton glanced at her notes then at her cauldron. She blinked, then did a double-back. Huh? The next step was the same as the last one, with the exception of colors. Daaaang. That was a lot of toasted dragonfly thoraxes in this one potion. Poor dragonflies.

Dropping in more toasted dragonfly thoraxes, Peyton kept count in her head. She began to worry once more when she reached seventeen. What if this time her potion needed more, but she could add more because Lafay said no more than twenty? Eeeek!

As she added the nineteenth dragonfly thorax, Peyton paused. The potion began to clear up a bit, gaining a sort of gradient, then turned silver. Ha! She was SO happy her potion had not needed more. Phew.

Once more, she waited for the solution to heat up, her fingertips tapping lightly on the table. Waiting was not her thing. She was naturally impatient. This was why she preferred to be up in the sky. No waiting there, her. When she glanced into her cauldron, again, she saw as the liquid turned red. Pity that it couldn't be pink again.

Unless there was a special dragonfly toaster out there that was only used for them and not bread. Which was kinda weird, but this was the wizarding world after all.

Or maybe there was simply a spell for it. Incendio? Eh. Probably not.

Next step?

Heat until it was red again. So Penelope focused on that next.

19... Still none. Huh. So 19 wasn't the charm. Strange. There was only one thing left to do, so Kat added the 20th toasted fly thorax. And WALAAAA! The potion was silver. She was still on the right track. Wiw. Not so complicating. Oh yeah.

"Incendio!" Again, she heated her cauldron. The potion likes fire apparently. Just like Lafay. Then her potion turned red. It was supposed to turn red, so Kat was relieved. "Finite," she stopped the fire.

Uhm. Almost done? Kind of.

Humor was, admittedly, not one of November's strong suits. In fact, it was pretty far down the list she was sure, surgeons the response of her friends - or lack thereof, seeing how Eddie took November literally. The Ravenclaw frowned and cast a lingering curious glance at Edits, her brows knit together. It was hardly worth it to note, and yet, "Never mind it, Edits. It was a joke. A bad joke."

Note to self: you are awful at humor, November. Leave it to Eddie, and her dart jokes and butt jokes.

Her gaze returned to her cauldron, and the pink liquid within. At least it'd finally gotten to an acceptable shade of pink. While she was fairly decent at potions, November found it required great patience, and rather lacked it in great quantities. Plus, these instructions made her second guess everything she did. Sometimes a girl just required a lot of details.

Holding the jar of the dragonfly thoraxes (and what exactly, was a thorax?) November noted the amount of animals used in potions. Sure, dragonflies were bugs and Noe held little compassion or concern for bugs, but there were seahorses involved, involved as well!

"Er, sorry little guys," November apologized half-heartedly, with an unconcerned shrug. One, two, two-thirds, four, five, a shift in colors. The pink began to deepen, headed to a pretty shade of magenta she'd like to wear on her nails. Ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, opinion, couldn't she just leave it st this pretty color?

Finally, the eighteenth dragonfly whatever bit breached what November assumed was red enough. Right? Could it go another shade? The instructions said not to exceed twenty - that left two. What happened after twenty, though? She'd rather not mess up this potion!

"Does this look red enough?" she questioned her friends, catching her lower lip between her teeth and nibbling gently as she contemplated the shade in her cauldron. Precision made her anxious. Bad marks and melted cauldrons rather ruined her mood.

Scanning her notes, Peyton tapped the next step with the tip of her finger. Doxy eggs were next. She counted the eggs to make sure she had gotten the correct about. She didn't to add them just to find out she still needed more. Peyton counted the remaining eggs, nine. She added them to her potion, making sure she didn't drop them in too hard that it'll splash unfinished potion everywhere. Lafay wouldn't like that. Peyton wondered if she was a neat freak like her mother? Hmm.

When she was done with that, she peered at her notes once more. Nodding to herself, Peyton added the ten not toaster dragonfly thoraxes. She made a face. The smell wasn't very nice. Granted it wasn't as bad as the first smelly potion they had done, but still...a little ew.

Anya's eyes widen at the instructions on the parchment. Seriously. Adding toasted dragonfly thoraxes until it turned red. That meant... she had to add them one at a time, didn't it.

Grummmmble.

Why couldn't it be something easy like... just dump all 20 of those in there and call it good?

And so, Anya rested her head in her hand with her elbow on the table. And one by one she began dropping them in the cauldron. Then waiting for a color change. Dropping them. Wait.

Drop. Wait. That was five down.

DropWaitDropWait...

And so forth for several seconds, her pile of thoraxes gradually decreasing.

Salamander blood.

That's the special ingredient Ella had picked to add to her potion and she eyed it curiously, biting her lip as she did. This wasn't going to like... totally destroy her potion or anything, was it? Not that it should...because Salamander blood was used in strengthening potions and that was a good thing and it could only be a positive addition to this potion, yeah? ...Totally.

Pulling it towards her, the fifteen year old eyed the now green potion and took a deep breath. It was now or never, right? And everything was going to be fine and go smoothly so there was nothing to worry about. Nope.

Drip. Drip. Drip.

Ella added in several drops of the blood and sat back a little, waiting for something to happen. Everything seemed just fine, though. No explosions or major color changes or anything so...maybe it was fine?

...Or maybe she hadn't added enough?

Hmm.

Oh well, what was done was done. She'd given it her best shot so...yeah.

Eyeing her notes for the last time, the blonde crossed off the final step and waited and watched her potion.

The Ravenclaw brunette didn't bother repeating the answers her peers has shared to the rest of the class for she was too busy making up her mind if she should approach Professor Lafay and ask her why there wasn't a baby with them today. But so far, the declining side was winning for she knew that she'd probably be whipped out of that classroom faster than she could say ice cream if she did ask a question as such which was totally unrelated to what the lesson was typically all about.

So she stayed silent and jotted down on her parchment the ingredients and procedure for the Girding Potion once it was on the board.

Before going over to browse the cupboards for the necessary ingredients, Beezus listened to what Professor Lafay added in first. She said they were to choose another single ingredient of their choice in addition. Beezus rubbed her chin and rummaged her head for any specific ingredient that somehow had a spark in her and then....DING! That ingredient came to mind. She grinned and shrugged at herself then and went to get the ingredients.

When all were in, she went over the procedures and bit her bottom lip. The steps didn't seem too complex but she knew she still had to be careful or else she might face Professor Lafay's wrath at the Dungeons and she did't need that right now. Not when she needed more time to study more for OWLs.

So she kept telling herself that every move she makes should precise and without fault.

Deep breaths.

After scougifying her cauldron to ensure that it was clean, the Ravenclaw filled it with water then added her secret ingredient followed by the set of fairy wings. She was about to heat the potion when there were explosions from all over directions.

O__O EH.

She would not be making explosions this time. She'd brew this potion successfully, that was the goal. And with that thought, she took out her wand and began to heat the potion. And after a short while, its color turned into turquoise.

Ugh, red again. Mo nudged at the flame with his wand and made growly faces as he observed his potion go from the sparkling silver to that blood red again. Major. Downer.

It didn't have to stay that way for long, though, because Mo had a whole mess of doxy eggs to add to his potion. And then some thoraxes AGAIN, and the potion would turn blue. AS IT SHOULD BE. Mo separated the nine remaining doxy eggs into three piles of three each and then lined up the last ten thoraxes (original recipe) behind the doxy eggs.

Each tidy pile of eggs went into the cauldron, and Mo checked the potion before adding the next. No color change with this one, but he wasn't really expecting there to be one. Color change now would mean he'd ruined it, and Mo didn't feel like starting over.

Once his eggs were added, Mo drip-dropped those last ten dragonfly thoraxes into the liquid with satisfying little splashes. NOW... was it blue yet?

Ethan jotted down the list of the ingredients as well as the instructions for the Girding Potion into his journal. He thought he might like this way of brewing potions.. almost like less supervision and working at your own pace. He wasn't completely sure about the final, choose-your-own ingredient though. He'd have to give that some thought while he was working.

The Ravenclaw went to the cupboard and collected the required ingredients as written on the board, bringing them back to his workstation. He cleaned his cauldron with a quick Scourgify, then set it on the burner. Aguamenti to fill the cauldron with water from his wand, Finite to stop the water flow when it was an acceptable level for him, then Incendio at the base of the cauldron to set the flame.

He glanced down at his notes to see what was next. Fairy wings. Ethan dropped the pair of wings into the cauldron and peered in. No change yet.. How long was it supposed to take till it turned turquoise?

They were nice, and it was a shame to have to get them all wet, but that was what the instructions had wanted. She sprinkled the wings inside the cauldron and then lit the flame beneath it. When was it going to turn turquoise? Now? Now? Now?

He was back together with Beezus...and he didn't want or need complications....And the girls all over him all the time...DEFINITELY caused those. "I've thought about cutting my hair off....since it seems to be where my power comes from..."

Seriously...Girls loved the hair.

Focusing back on his cauldon, he took a deep breath before eyeballing his notes. First up seemed to be the fair wings. Two individual ones that were ONE pair. Extra information but it was what it was...Also, was it lit? Yes.

Yes, it was...

Having organized the ingredients in such a way that would be easy for him to navigate, Dylan plucked up the two fairy wings with careful, GLOVED fingers...(because he kept a pair in his back pocket and never DIDN'T wear them for brewing-time). Adding them in, also carefully because the notes hadn't specified, he watched them sink down into the water...almost transfixed. There was just something about fairies in general that made one unable to look away...

Ahem.

Now, he waited...and allowed the burner to do it's job. He surveyed Alice again, watching her work...and then slid his eyes over others in the room. This was what was so great about Potions class. Not a whole lot of talking. As a typically chill, quiet person, Dylan appreciated that...

After several moments, he checked his potion and seen that it had turned turquoise. It was time to move on.

Oh, and updating his notes. That was important, too.

  • Lobalug venom (personal ingredient)
    Notes: The venom of the Lobalug is a defensive mechanism employed by the creature to deter attackers. Wizards use the venom as a potion ingredient, although the practise is strictly controlled.

Steps / Procedure
  • Cleaned cauldon. (Scourgify!)
  • Filled to the neck with water. (Aguamenti!)
  • Add the set of fairy wings
  • Heat until the potion turns turquoise .
